Julian se 10 onderskeidings is in Afrikaans huistaal (85%), Engels eerste addisionele taal (89%), wiskunde (85%), wiskunde 3 (92%), fisiese wetenskap pe (94%), lewenswetenskappe (93%), rekeningkunde (92%), inligtingstegnologie(92%), besigheidstudies (88%) en lewensoriëntering (90%).

Willem wil gaan organe kweek

Reddingswerkers staan by die verfrommelde wrak van mnr. Frans Nortjé se Isuzu bakkie verlede Woensdag. Nortjé is opslag dood nadat hy in ´n tromp-op botsing met ´n ligte vragmotor betrokke was. Deur Isabel Venter

Man sterf in tromp-op botsing met vragmotor Meer as ‘n week ná die gru-ongeluk waarin ‘n inwoner van Louis Trichardt dood is, heers daar steeds grootskaalse verwarring oor die oorsaak van die ongeluk. Mnr.

Town now boasts own SBV cash centre

Competition

Winners announced Steyn Staal made two of their customers very happy by giving them an early Christmas gift last year. The two customers received the Christmas promotion to the value of R5 000 each. In our photo, the customer of the Louis Trichardt branch, Mr NJ Luvhimvi(left), is congratulated by Mr David Nepsimbada of Steyn Staal. Photo supplied.

Timbercity in Louis Trichardt hosted a competition from 23 November until 24 December last year. Clients could enter their purchase receipt (of any value) into a lucky draw and stand the chance to win a Ryobi cordless screwdriver. One lucky customer was Nditsheni Makhado (left) who received his prize from Mazhar Goolam. Other lucky winners included Tsakani, William and Johannah Nemafhohoni. Customers can still enter for the grand prize until the end of January. Photo supplied.

SBV services has introduced a new cash centre branch in the Louis Trichardt area, enabling SBV to reach one of their on-going growth strategies, which entails introducing new and upgrading existing cash centres in high-cashdemand areas. The cash centre has been introduced in the region with the aim of increasing and managing cash operations in the province. The region was identified as a high-cash-demand area, booming with both retail and ATM centres. The area previously relied on using the Polokwane

SBV cash centre to collect and deliver cash and cheques to and from retail premises. As the demand increased, the supply channel efficiency was affected, leading to the establishment of the new centre. SBV currently manages more than 20 cash centres and streamlines the cash management process by saving costs and eliminating the risk of transferring cash. The company also provides a total cash centre solution for wholesale cash, note sorting and Notes Held to Order, as well as retail cash processing on behalf of banks. Grant Dunnington, SBV

Group CEO, commented: “We are very excited with deploying our cash centre services in Louis Trichardt. This will allow cash orders placed by retailers to be processed and delivered securely and efficiently, saving them time and, most importantly, eliminating the existing risk factors.” As South African consumers enter the New Year, retailers are advised to continue being highly cautious for the safety of their businesses and customers. The centre was opened on 19 December last year. (Article: Dineo Molaba on behalf of SBV)

Lurina Visser spog met ses A’s in

Zim police arrest illegal immigrants Zimbabwean police in Beit Bridge impounded 22 vehicles that were being used to facilitate irregular migration and arrested more than 150 suspected illegal immigrants who intended to cross the border into South Africa during the festive period. The arrests were made during a joint border operation with other security agencies between 20 December and 2 January. Fifty of the suspects appeared in court on Friday and were charged with contravening a section of the Immigration Act. They were fined between US$ 150 and US$ 300 each for the offence. The local police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Lawrence Chinhengo, said among those arrested were 30 suspects who were known for facilitating irregular migration and border-jumping activities. He said some of the cars were impounded while parked at homes in villages on the periphery of the border town along the borderline. The homes were being used as safe havens for illegal immigrants intending to cross into South Africa via undesignated entry points along the Limpopo River. Chinhengo said the ongoing operation would continue until there was sanity at the border. Some of the villages used by the border jumpers include Makakavhule, Dite and Panda Mine.

Students bring home trophy Emmanuel Christian School in Louis Trichardt is very proud of two of its Grade 11 students. The two students, Phophi Silinda and Andy Thovhakale, represented the country at the Student/Teacher International Conference hosted by the Global Travel and Tourism Partnership (GTTP) in November last year and managed to bring home the GTTP trophy. GTTP is a multi-country educational program to introduce students to career opportunities in

travel and tourism. Schools from Brazil, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Russia and the United Kingdom attended the conference. During the conference, Phophi and Andy’s presentation was nominated as one of the top four presentations. Last year was also the first time ever that a Limpopo school had won a GTTP competition. As prize, Phophi and Andy, as well as their tourism teacher, Mrs Muralda van der Nest, won a trip to Europe.

Klofies trying to raise R6 million through world record attempt Hof staan borg toe Hockey players from Hoërskool Waterkloof in us per kilometre.” The newspaper caught up with the players on Pretoria hope to set a Guinness World Record by dribbling hockey balls for 500km from Musina to Pretoria. The team departed from Musina on Monday, 9 January, at 06:30. They will dribble the balls for 50km per day for 10 days until they arrive in Pretoria. They plan to arrive in Pretoria on Wednesday, 18 January. They hope to use the unusual marathon to raise R6 million for the construction of a stateof-the-art hockey field at their school. One of the organisers of the event, Ms Emelia Janse van Rensburg, says the group consists of 40 players, who are eager to be part of history in the making. “We are fully prepared for this event and we are definitely going to set up a Guinness World Record. Our escort team, which includes traffic officers and a medical team, is also ready for the challenge. The idea is to get companies to sponsor

Janse van Rensburg says people can also support the initiative financially by SMSing the word HOCKEY to 48822. “The SMS costs R10 and our initiative gets R9 from each message. We therefore request people to send SMSes in large numbers.” Janse van Rensburg says they are also working with Kits4Kids, an organisation which collects old sporting equipment for underprivileged children and she requests people to donate their sporting equipment that is not being used. On behalf of the Musina Municipality, Cllr James Kaunda wished the players a safe journey. “As the starting point of the historic marathon, Musina Municipality is proud to be part of this occasion. We have no doubt that the players will arrive safely in Pretoria and set up a world record that will also put Musina on the map. We also hope that they will also raise enough funds for their intended project.”

Tuesday morning when they dribbled into Louis Trichardt, an hour ahead of schedule. Janse van Rensburg said the children’s enthusiasm was the reason why they were making such good time. “The mountain was nothing for them. By the time they reached the summit, the children looked even fresher than before they started,” Janse van Rensburg said. The heat, however, took some getting used to. By the time of going to press, the team was pushing to reach Polokwane by Wednesday. They are scheduled to reach Mokopane by Friday (13th) and Mookgophong by Saturday (14th) and pass through Bela-Bela on Monday (16th). People interested in getting to know more about the record attempt or who would like to make a contribution can phone Janse van Rensburg at Tel 082 850 2271.

Four claim they were tortured by Musina police Four men from Musina are seriously injured and claimed that they were brutally tortured and assaulted by members if the Musina police. The men said they were kicked, hit with fists, sjambokked and sprayed with chemicals in their eyes and private parts by gun-wielding police officers, who wrongfully accused them of having unlicensed firearms. Arnold Tshifhiwa Murema (25), Tshimangadzo Mbedzi (42), Enos Matsema and Phillemon Nelushi (21) said they had opened assault cases against the police officers who had allegedly assaulted them, but they had not been supplied with case numbers after two weeks. “We know these officers very well and we don’t understand why action is not taken against them,” says Murema. He suffered a broken leg, sore hips and arms and said he hoped that justice would one day prevail. Murema’s injuries are so severe that he could not even walk. He said he was asleep when police officers arrived at his home at night and broke down the doors to gain entry. “They first had a quarrel with my mother and when I went to investigate, they started beating me up, telling me to surrender my gun. a case on his own, but they were so kind to drive with me home and he opened the case while lying on his bed. We have been waiting for the case number since then and we have not heard anything from the police.” Mr Tshimangadzo Mbedzi said police also came to his house and demanded guns. “I told them I did not know what they were talking about. They started assaulting me and took me to a police car that was waiting at the gate of my house. They took me to a dense bush near the border and commanded me to sit next to a big baobab tree. They pulled off my shoes and hit me with a cane several times under my feet. They sprayed my private parts and face with a substance and continued beating me until I could not walk. They then dumped me at my house and left. Although I have a valid doctor’s report and the names of the officers who attacked me, I have not received any case number. I think some people are trying to cover up

for their colleagues for the wrongs they did.” Mr Enos Matsema says he will not rest until his attackers are brought to book. “We know it is against the law for police officers to assault us. They searched my house and car and found nothing. They took me to a farm where they continued beating me with fists and a cane. I have also reported the case and I have a valid doctor’s certificate, but they are not providing me with any case number. Their cover-up will never work.” In response, Lt Peter Mudau of the Musina SAPS said he would investigate the claims and urged the men to contact the head of the detectives at the police station immediately. He said it was standard procedure that anyone who reported a case should get the case number on the same day. “We will surely investigate the claims, and if there is any wrongdoing, the law will take its course.”

13 Januarie 2012 13 Crime prevention

Police target counterfeiters The police in Limpopo have confiscated counterfeit goods and illegal fireworks worth more than R1 million during operations all over the province during the last week of December.

Attiya Moosa, who graduated from Louis Trichardt High School in 2006, will receive her Bachelor of Law degree in April this year. This after she successfully completed her LLB studies with distinction in November last year. Attiya started her studies in 2008 at the University of Pretoria.

This was announced during the official launch of the anti-piracy campaign which took place in Polokwane on December 30. During the launch, the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Priority Investigations in Limpopo, Maj Gen Dibero Molatjana, said that Operation Anti-Piracy was implemented in direct support of the national initiative against contraventions of the Copyright Act (Act 98 of 1978 sec 27). The operation was a multi-disciplinary approach that included role players from the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, Home Affairs and the South African Federation against Copyright Theft. Even a few artists such as Winnie Mashaba and Malatji took part in the

operation. Molatjana explained the impact of the operation was aimed to reduce the levels of loss of sale income experienced by artists when their CDs and DVDs are being copied and sold on the streets as well as to reduce the incidents of tax evasion by counterfeiters. The operations took place in Polo kwane, Thohoyandou, Musina, Mokopane and Tzaneen. According to Molatjana, this would roll out to the rest of the province, with regular operations being planned to take place throughout 2012. During the operations, police confiscated counterfeit CDs, DVDs, scanners, printers and computers used in the manufacturing process of the counterfeit goods. In the same operations, police also cracked down on dealers who sold fireworks without the necessary licenses and documentation and confiscated thousands of fireworks.

Beit Bridge records sharp increase in movement

Vacancies

Beit Bridge Border Post recorded a sharp increase in the number of travellers last year during the festive season, with statistics indicating that 51 601 people passed through the port of entry between Christmas Day and 31 December, compared to 18 222 during the same periodthe previous year. The local regional immigration manager in charge of Beit Bridge Border Post, Mr Charles Gwede, said they handled the highest number of travellers on the entry side on Christmas Day, when 12 594 people entered the country. “This year we handled an increase in the volume of both human and vehicle traffic during the festive season, compared to last year. Most of the travellers that we handled were Zimbabweans working in South Africa who were coming home for the Christmas holiday. Statistics show that we received 35 077 people on the entry side alone, a sharp increase compared to 9 725 during the same period last year,” he said. On the departure side, immigration authorities handled 16 524 travellers, compared to 8 497 during the same period last year. Gwede attributed the increase of travellers to the South African documentation exercise, which saw many Zimbabweans working in the country acquiring permits. “Many of our people staying and working in South Africa are now documented after they acquired permits during the regularisation exercise in that country. They could now travel freely, which is why this year they came in large numbers compared to the previous years,” he said. The South African government embarked on the process of documenting Zimbabweans illegally staying in that country between 5 May 2009 and 31 July 2011, during which more than 275 000

applications from Zimbabweans were processed, while several others were turned down and some are pending. Beit Bridge is reported to be the busiest inland port of entry in sub-Saharan Africa, which handles a huge volume of traffic. This is mostly commercial vehicles, including those destined for neighbouring countries such as Zambia, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo, passing through daily. On average, the border handles about 10 000 travellers daily, with the figures going up during the peak periods. “When we are not busy, the

normal traffic flow of buses is 60, but during the peak period we get about 300 buses passing through on a daily basis. The infrastructure at the border on our side has a capacity to handle 4 000 travellers at a given time, which is why during the peak period like now, travellers encounter delays due to congestion coupled with a shortage of staff,” Gwede said. As a decongestion strategy, the Department of Immigration had created additional counters where travellers would also utilize the cubicles situated outside the immigration hall.

Die Weg, die Waarheid en die Lewe Brandhout beklee met Geesklere - Sagaria 3:1-10

J

Dit doen hy regverdig sowel as onregverdig. Daar is steeds vuil klere. Jes. 61:10: “Ek is baie bly oor die Here, ek juig oor my God, want Hy het my gered, vir my oorwinnaarsklere aangetrek.” Wanneer dit gebeur kan ons weet. God is altyd by. Jy sal toegang tot My hê, net soos hierdie engele.” - 079 5168303

Motorist arrested after offering bribe Two motorists were arrested on the spot when they allegedly tried to bribe traffic officials who were on duty during a road safety campaign that was held recently on the N1 at Musina. This happened on separate occasions when the officers were allegedly offered cash while they were enquiring about the roadworthiness of vehicles during the campaign. The officers immediately alerted the police officers, who arrested the culprits. Mayor Carol Phiri, who was also part of the road safety campaign, praised the dedicated traf-

fic officials for their faithfulness. “We need public servants who will blow the whistle on corruption and bribery. We are very proud of them and we have no doubt that they have set a good example for everyone who fights for good governance. I’m highly impressed by their good actions.” During her official address just before the campaign, Phiri said the Musina Municipality was happy to join forces with stakeholders to set in motion the common element of providing safety for the people, which marks the beginning of a concerted road safety effort throughout the year.

“Many of us travel to different destinations on our roads on a daily basis. Let’s remember that one life lost is one too many. Road accidents can be avoided and many lives can be saved. This can only be achieved though initiatives of this nature. The urgency to deal with issues of road safety effectively and efficiently cannot be overemphasised. We cannot allow the status quo to remain when statistics continue to show us a disturbing trend on our roads. The carnage on our roads is beyond comprehension,” she added.

SA records increase in tourist arrivals South Africa recorded 3.7 million tourists who passed through the country’s airports and border posts last month, a 2% increase compared to December 2010. Of these tourists, 2.5 million were foreigners while 1.2 million South Africans passed through the airports and border posts. In a statement, Home Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said most tourists who visited the country during the festive season were from Britain, America and Germany, as well as neighbouring countries such as Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia. Dlamini-Zuma said her department’s advanced passenger processing system (APP) and movement control system (MCS) recorded these figures at airports

and border posts. According to early estimates by SA Tourism, each foreign tourist spends an average of R1 000 a day in South Africa. Dlamini-Zuma said she was convinced that every visitor to South Africa enjoyed this country’s warmth, hospitality and diversity of fauna and flora. She said the Department of Home Affairs had placed 350 newly trained immigration officials at the OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg to render advanced services. Other border posts, including Beit Bridge Border Post, the busiest inland port of entry in sub-Saharan Africa, also received a deployment of extra staff during the festive period. Meanwhile, Beit Bridge border post was extremely busy between Friday and Sunday as scores of travellers, mostly Zimbabweans

working in South Africa, were trooping back into the country. On average, the border handles about 10 000 travellers daily with the figures doubling up during the peak period, such as the festive season. Traditionally during the festive A police officer arrests a Zimbabwean motorist who allegedly tried to bribe a traffic official during season, the border gets busier as the road safety campaign at Musina. Zimbabweans visit their country to spend Christmas with their families back home. The assistant regional immigration manager in charge of Beit Bridge Border Post, Mr Charles Gwede, said on Sunday that they had recorded a total of 15 208 travellers on their departure side. “We are starting to witness an increase in the number of travellers on the departure side, unlike in the days preceding the Christmas holidays, when we handled more people on the entry side than the exit side,” he said.

Warning

Your vehicle can become a death trap Amid the extremely high daytime temperatures currently being experienced in the region, paramedics from ER24 expressed their concern over parents leaving their children and pets in the car while they go shopping. Statistics show that between 2006 and 2010, 24% of all child fatalities occurred when a child was left alone in a hot vehicle. Small children and infants are affected differently from adults when presented with severe heat conditions. When a child or an infant is presented with these heat factors, their bodies sweat excessively and they become severely dehydrated and lose life-sustaining electrolytes. “If this condition is not corrected immediately, the child can go into heat stroke and will

be unable to sweat, thus increasing the body core temperature to a dangerously high condition. Extreme temperatures can lead to seizures, brain damage, liver or kidney failure and even death,” states ER24 in a press release. A motor vehicle is a metal box that can act as an oven when parked in direct sunlight or high temperatures. With outside temperatures of approximately 33°C, the inside of the vehicle can easily reach more than 50°C in 20 minutes. Even with a window left open, the inside of the vehicle can reach well more than 60°C in just 40 minutes. Extreme temperature can change a child’s life in a matter of minutes. ER24 paramedics advise the following: * Under no circumstances should you leave your child (or pet) in a vehicle, even if a win-

dow is left open and you know you will only be away for a few minutes; * Always make sure that your children have left the car with you when you arrive at your destination to avoid accidently locking them inside the vehicle; * If you notice a child in a vehicle, immediately try to locate the parents or owner of the vehicle and contact the Police (10111) or Emergency Medical Services (084124). Taking immediate action could save the life of the child; and * Children who were successfully removed from a vehicle after being left unattended in the heat should undergo a medical examination in order to determine if they have any signs or symptoms of heat exhaustion or stroke.

Black Leopards make Limpopo’s capital city their new home It’s now official: Black Leo pards are now based in Polo kwane. They finally moved to Limpopo Province’s capital city on Monday. The club’s brand manager, Mr Tshifhiwa Thidiela, confirmed this early this week. Thidiela stated that the decision to relocate the team to Polokwane was influenced by a number of factors. According to him it was expensive for the club to travel about 100 kilometers from Louis Trichardt to honour their home

matches at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. He stated that it was important for the team to train at their home ground on a day-to-day basis in order for the players to acclimatise with the environment. Thidiela appealed to the residents of Vhembe District not to despair, saying they will bring the team back to Thohoyandou if and when there is a venue that meets the Premier Soccer League standards within Vhembe District. He revealed that they will

maintain their offices at Louis Trichardt. Thidiela said that their Polo kwane offices are at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. He further stated that the team resumed training this week after breaking for the festive holidays. According to him, the team will go for a training camp in Mozambique on Sunday, January 22. They will play a number of friendly matches as part of their preparations for the secondround matches which kick off on Wednesday, February 15. Wynanda Pretorius has started a Run/Walk For Life programme in Louis Trichardt. Fitness

Programme promotes healthier lifestyle Those with New Year’s resolutions to live a healthier lifestyle and lose weight this year, and all those who have been trying without success, will be elated to hear that a Run/ Walk For Life Programme is set to open on 9 January. “There is such a need and demand for this programme. This is a programme for the whole family; children are also welcome. All members will be supervised and monitored,” says Wynanda Pretorius, who has the local agency for Run/ Walk For Life and has undergone all the necessary training. Members will walk on the town rugby field, while advanced walkers will go out on the road under the supervision of road leaders. Sessions will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 17:15 onwards. “The main purpose of the programme is weight loss and fitness. People often walk on

their own and never really lose weight. Our fitness and weight-loss programme is scientifically and medically formulated and has shown positive results,” says Wynanda. The programme accommodates people of all ages and fitness levels and has proven health advantages, such as the lowering of cholesterol, high blood pressure and reduced levels of stress and anxiety. During the first month, and depending on the fitness level of the member, the duration of the exercise can be from 5 minutes to 25 minutes per session. It gradually increases according to a scientific formula, so that the progress is neither too fast nor too slow. The maximum exercise time on the highest level is 70 minutes. For more information, phone Wynanda at 015 516 1284 or 082 499 5881.
