“Dead man” found alive after being missing for eight days
Community builder Lufuno Maseule, who went missing for eight days. By Elmon Tshikhudo The sangoma who managed to locate a man who was believed dead after he had been missing for eight days, says no problem is too complex for the ancestors. Mamaila Makondo allegedly successfully performed rituals that helped the community to find the man, community builder Lufuno Maseule (36). The disappearance of people in Vhembe has become a common feature. In numerous cases, those who go missing are never found or, if ever found, they are bones or in a state of decay. In only a few cases are those who disappear, found alive. Communities ascribe the disappearance of people to ritual murders, which are rife in the region. A fortnight ago, the Maseule family in Malavuwe village outside Thohoyandou and the community found themselves in the same predicament when a member of the family went missing without a trace. Lufuno Maseule, who is known for numerous efforts to develop the youth in the field of sport and who is also a reggae musician with several albums under his belt, was reported missing

for eight days. The community looked everywhere in the local bushes and neighbouring villages of Tshikonelo and Shikundu. Police with sniffer dogs and a helicopter also joined the search but in vain. After all efforts had failed, members of the community met to discuss the way forward. Several options were put forward, but the community decided to use a traditional healer. The traditional healer, Mamaila Makondo (77) of Mphego village, gave the family some medicine with instructions to follow and, as per the instructions, the missing man was found alive in a neighbouring village. Where he had been is still a mystery as he cannot talk at the moment. The re-appearance of Maseule has made the traditional healer a hero in the village. The village also paid her a consultation fee of R10 per household and they are still prepared to pay her handsomely for her to reveal what had led to his disappearance. The missing man’s father, Mr Orlick Maseule, said his son had started behaving strangely before he had vanished without trace. - Continues on p2

Elderly sangoma brings back “dead man” (From page 1) “All we know is that he had not been feeling well for some time now and on the day of his disappearance he left the house through a window and was not wearing shoes, but socks. He went to a nearby bus stop where, holding a stone, he started shouting at the top of his voice that there were people who wanted to murder him for ritual purposes. After being restrained by the local leadership, he vanished without a trace,” said Mr Masuele. He said they had had sleep-
less nights and they had even started mourning him, thinking that he would not come back alive. “The sangoma did an exceptional job. She even gave us a time frame, and what she told us happened the way she told us. Had it not been for her, we would not have succeeded,” he said. Local civic leader Mr Thomas Makhanthisa said it took them some effort to convince the community not to cause violence. “We searched everywhere, including hospitals and mortuaries, but in vain. That was
when we decided to enlist the services of a traditional healer. We are just happy that it is all over and that he was found alive,” he said. Makondo, the traditional healer, said when the family approached her, she took time and communicated with the ancestors, who told her what to do. “I am a well-trained traditional healer who spent a long time under the waters of the Luvuvhu River, until a famous sangoma came and performed rituals before taking me back to the community. No problem is too big for me. I knew that he was going to be found alive.”
An hour was all it took for a blazing hot fire to reduce a wholesale business to rubble. The raging fire that destroyed the CheckOut store in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) on Sunday, broke out at around 12:00, causing mayhem not only for local firefighters, but also for business owners. By the time the firefighters arrived on the scene, masses of dark smoke could be seen churning from beneath the roof of the building, located in Kruger Street. The fire seemingly spread from the back to the front of the building. At the time of going to press, the cause of the fire was still being investigated by both the police and at least two other private fire-investigation companies. At 12:37, the smoke cloud could be seen as far as Mountain Inn on the N1 north as it steadily spread over town. At the store, firefighters battled alongside the local police and members of the Soutpansberg Town Watch to contain not only the rampant fire, but also the growing crowd of spectators who gathered right in front of the burning building. At that stage, the curious crowd were taking cellphone pictures of the building, which sounded like a war was in progress on the inside as merchandise caught fire and exploded. The fire suddenly took a turn
for the worse at around 12:45 when the roof of the building exploded, sending burning pieces of flaming corrugated iron tumbling to the ground. The firefighters had to remove their firetruck quickly to avoid getting crushed by the burning rubble. During this time, a struggle was going on to open a petrol container to ensure that it did not catch fire. Fortunately, this tank was empty and did not pose any further risk. The crowd, however, made it difficult for rescue personnel to manoeuver on the scene. At one stage, shortly after the first surge by the fire, the police had to drive back the crowd, who tried to plunder open businesses bordering the burning CheckOut. Business owners had opened their shops at around 12:45 to salvage their stock, loading whatever they could on anything that had space and wheels. The prospective looters were, however, quickly driven back by the local police. At 12:50, a second explosion from the burning building ensured that all looting was reserved for later. It took a huge effort from the Makhado Fire Station, the Phoenix Flying Squad and the Makhado Air Force Base’s fire brigade to bring the fire under control eventually. Their efforts were hampered by low water pressure in the municipal fire hydrants.
Fire trucks had to suffice and had to keep replenishing their water supply to subdue the fire. Building owner Mr Satar Aboo said on Monday that it was difficult to determine the exact value of the damage caused by the fire. “We will have to wait for the investigation to be completed, and only then will a strategy be determined for a way forward,” he said. In the meantime, CheckOut, which has been the tenant of the building for almost 12 years, is currently underway with arrangements to ensure that its 50 odd employees will have a livelihood after the fire. In addition, Sunday’s low water pressure at CheckOut will not be subjected to an investigation. The spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Ralushai Matodzi, confirmed on Wednesday that the water supply to Makhado (Louis Trichardt) had been functioning on Sunday. He was unwilling to comment on the apparent low pressure of the water supply. “The Makhado Fire Brigade, when they realized that the pressure was low, called for back-up; this is in line with the training that they received,” said Matodzi on Wednesday. “Everybody knows the water issue in town [Makhado/Louis Trichardt] is improving by the day,” he added.
Budget
Thulamela to implement new property rates The Thulamela Municipality approved a record budget of R883,6 million two weeks ago, but the extra money to pay for the expenses will have to come from the taxpayers as well as the selling of assets, such as land. Thulamela Mayor Grace Mahosi presented the budget to members of the public, the executive committee, senior traditional leaders, ward councillors, and other relevant stakeholders on 30 May at the municipal council chamber. A large amount of the additional income meant to finance Council’s expenses will come from the implementation of the new property valuation roll. “The assessment rates for the 2014/15 financial year is R103,8 million, while in the previous financial year it was R35 million,” she said. Whether Council will be able to collect the money is debatable. In her address, Cllr Mahosi referred to the problems of collecting debt. “Our financial firm ground lies in our will and strategies which can remove us from our stagnant revenue collection,” she said. In the past year, the municipality managed to collect about 40% of their outstanding debt, but the mayor believes this can improve dramatically. Council budgeted for a 50% collection rate in the new year. Another source of revenue
that Council is about to explore, is the issuing of fines. Traffic offenders will seemingly have to be extremely careful, as the Thulamela Municipality plans on writing three times as many tickets as in the previous year. The budgeted income from traffic fines is R3 million, compared to the R1 million the previous year. Land owners who use their property illegally have to be extremely worried, as Council has budgeted for R6,2 million income via these type of fines. In the previous year, Council did not budget for any income from this source. By far the biggest additional revenue earner is the selling of sites. Council hopes to earn R92 million through the selling of such land. “We have more than 187 hectares (available) for business development in Malamulele, Thohoyandou J and K area and other residential sites in various areas,” Cllr Mahosi said. As far as tariff increases are concerned, these will seemingly be very moderate and based on the inflation rate. “The tariff increment has been provided for as per guideline received on the predicted trends in the inflation forecast (CPIX),” she said. In her budget speech, Mayor Mahosi mentioned the successes of the past year. These include the electrification of several areas, the job creation projects and the various housing projects.
The municipality, through its Environment and Waste Management Plan, managed to create in excess of 500 job opportunities. “We successfully commissioned a youth job in a Waste EPWP Programme worth R6 million with grant funding from the Department of Environmental Affairs,” she said. As far as expenses are concerned, the municipality expects the salary bill to rise by R16,8 million, totalling R227 million. A further R45 million is budgeted for electricity projects, but this expense will be funded by a long-term loan. Council also plans on spending R8,5 million in the new financial year on the re-gravelling of streets. As far as capital projects are concerned, a total of R333 million was set aside for new projects. The bulk of the money, R248 million, will go towards building roads and storm-water drainage networks. The Building Department was also allocated a budget of R37 million, compared to the R15 million received last year. Cllr Mahosi emphasized that the municipality will support small enterprises, cooperatives, the informal sector and rural small farmers. “We will establish community and village markets by non-financial means, as a way of ensuring food security while improving household and community income,” she added.

Pensioner’s family home burns down Community members from Madombidzha are still in shock, following an incident where the Malange family’s 13-roomed house burnt down on Sunday morning. The house, belonging to a senior citizen, was severely damaged by fire. According to eyewitnesses, they only saw a house burning but did not know
where the fire was coming from. There was no one in the house during the incident. Although the neighbours tried to assist, they could not save the contents inside the house. The owner, a pensioner, Mr Eric Malange, did not believe his eyes when he saw his house burning. “I felt like I was dreaming when I watched helplessly,” he said. “I am now appealing to any good Samaritan out there to come and assist me. What I want is to have a roof over my head. What have I done to deserve this?” he asked. Malange said that the incident happened around 07:00. “I was alerted by my neighbours that the house was burning. I rushed to the house and, on my arrival, the neighbours told me that they had already called the fire brigade of the Makhado Municipality. It responded very quickly, but the fire had unfortunately already caused severe The owner of the house, Eric damage,” he said. Malange said that he suspected Malange.
that the cause of the fire was an electrical fault. He estimates the damage at approximately R350 000. “The neighbours told us that they heard an explosion, followed by a fire,” he said. He added that the fridge, kitchen unit, beds, TV, money, clothes, ID, food and furniture had been destroyed by the fire. For the time being, the homeless family is staying over with neighbours. A plea was made to community members and the business sector to assist the family with food, clothes, school uniforms and books. “The senior citizen wants to repair the house, but it seems as if it will be difficult. He does not have any source of income,” said Cllr David Davhana. In the meantime, it was also reported that the house of a disabled pensioner, Mr David Mashige, burnt down on Monday afternoon. Anyone who wants to help the pensioners can phone Davhana at 079 368 7816.

The Tshivenda Music Awards (Tshima) is embroiled in a debilitating controversy, after failing to pay at least 12 artists who won the R10 000 cash prizes each. All these concerned artists were given awards during the second edition of the Tshivenda Music Awards (Tshima), shortly before Christmas last year. The Limpopo Mirror’s offices were inundated with calls from angry artists who claimed that the organisers of the Tshimas failed to make payments on January 2014 as this was what they were initially promised. “We need our money. We were told that we would get our money in January, but that didn’t happen,” said the artists, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation. The artists said that they phoned the project director, Mr Augustine Nethononda, about the payment immediately after payments were not done in January. Nethononda allegedly informed them that he had released all the monies to Ms Lutendo Nekhwevha to pay the artists. According to the disgruntled artists, Ms Nekhwevha even contacted all of them telephonically, promising that all winners would get paid on 31 May. “She even apologised to me,” said an artist. “I called [another winner], who also told me the same story, that Lutendo [Nekhwevha] apologised and promised to pay [that artist] on 31 May.” When no payments were made by that date, the artists became more frustrated. “When we inquire from her, she gets rude towards us and tells us to go wherever we want,” said one artist. “She said promoters didn’t give them (the Tshima organisers) even a cent.” The newspaper contacted Nekhwevha on Tuesday. “I won’t be commenting anything – not even now,” said Nekhwevha. “I am not alone in this Tshima business. “Somebody wants me dead”- pensioner Award for Vhembe’s best female farmers Pensioner Vuledzani Mphego of Muledane, whose 11-roomed house was completely destroyed by a fire at the weekend, said he believed that a close relative in the family wanted him dead. Mphego (56), a former mechanic at the University of Venda who retired due to ill health, said the fire at his house was started deliberately and was meant to kill him. Narrating the incident, Mphego said he was confronted by the family member on that fateful night, who accused him of having stolen R50. “This person came home drunk at around 20:00 and accused me of having stolen his money. I denied any knowledge of it, but he insisted that I took it,” he said. He said the argument became heated and, fearing that
he would be attacked, he left home for his brother’s house, elsewhere in the village. “On my way to my brother’s place, I saw a group of men from a distance and I feared that they would attack me. I was left with no option but to go back to the house and decided to use an outside room. At around midnight, I heard neighbours calling and, upon investigation, found that the whole house was on fire. By the time the fire services arrived, everything in the house was destroyed,” he said. He said the relative continued assaulting and insulting him in full view of the community while they were trying to extinguish the fire. He had to be restrained by members of the community. “Two years ago, I obtained a protection order against the
man, but it seems he will only be happy to see me dead,” he said. He said he had no money to repair the house and he would accept any form of help from anywhere. “Since the incident happened, our local councillor, Ms Nkhume Nemaranzhe, has been by my side. She made sure that everyone in the community knew about my plight and some have already responded. Bishop Tshabuse of Hope for all nations donated a bed. The local traditional leader has also been very helpful and gave us R1 000. This makes me feel comforted and that I am not alone,” he said. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo said they had no record of the incident but advised Mphego to open an arson case at the police station.
Outstanding female farmers falling under the jurisdiction of the Makhado Municipality received certificates and agricultural tools from the mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, during an event at the local show grounds last Friday. They were competing for the municipal Farmer of the Year award and participated in categories that ranged from household produce and natural markets to informal produce and exporters. During the event, Mayor David Mutavhatsindi said that emerging farmers were playing an impor-
tant role in food production. He encouraged women to become involved by starting gardens at the back of their houses. "We appreciate and value the contribution of women in economic activities of the province," said Mutavhatsindi. Mr Nthambeleni Tshipuliso from the Department of Agriculture said that the purpose of the competition was to empower and encourage women to take part in farming. “We want to assist women, particularly those from previously disadvantaged rural areas.
They must use their hands to curb the scarcity of food and the food price hike in the country,” he said. The winner of the section for household food production, Ms Agnes Muthavhini, farms with spinach and tomatoes and sells them to a big supermarket. She currently employs two people. The commercial category was won by Marubini Multipurpose of Maila, while the best producer is Ms Florence Masithi. The winners will represent Makhado Municipality in the district competition later this month.
Photographed during the event are, from left to right, Cllr Tebogo Mamorobela, Ms Agnes Muthavhini, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi and Cllr Percy Mashimbi.

Full military honours for local soldier Thousands of mourners braved the chilly weather on Sunday to bury one of the outstanding members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Maj Livhuwani James Tanzwani (50), at Khubvi village, near Thohoyandou. During his heydays, Tanzwani was a brilliant soccer player, writer of radio dramas and a community leader. He collapsed and died at Musina last week and was buried with full military honours. Commonly known as Bonndo, Tanzwani was a dribbling wizard who scored many goals for Khubvi Feedas All Stars in the eighties. He got the name after he scored a memorable goal which left SANDF members unwrap the South African flag from the coffin of Maj Livhuwani James the goal keeper fainting and his father, Rauvhona Tanzwani, before it is lowered to his final resting place. Tanzwani, a school principal, was so proud of his son that he gave him R2 (Bonndo). Those who preferred not to call him Bonndo also called him Muzekezeke while he was doing wonders on the soccer field. His bosom childhood friend, Tshati Munyai, who served with him in the defence force, said they were together in Pretoria two weeks before his death. He added that he was a very kind man “who could not even hurt a fly. I will really miss him.” As a renowned writer, Bonndo wrote two radio dramas which were highly regarded by the listeners of the then Radio Venda and Radio Thohoyandou. His first radio drama was called Ngavhe and the second Ni do vhuya na mmbudza. He also wrote published poetry under the title Ndala, ngoho, lufuno mulamuleli. Those close to him will know that he loved reggae music until his last day on earth, especially the song Six and Seven Books by Toots and the Mytals. Representing the children of the deceased, Nzumbululo Tanzwani said: “We are greatly saddened by the departure of our beloved father. He was so kind, caring and responsible. We will always remember the good things he did for us while he was still alive. We will really miss him.” Chief Thinawanga Randima of Khubvi said his A member of the army hands over the South African flag and the army beret to the Bella Tanzwani, village had been robbed of a celebrity and a prominent figure. “I am very proud of this man who is wife of the deceased Major Livhuwani James Tanzwani.
sleeping here. Whenever our village is mentioned anywhere, his name was always there. I regard him as a hero, who has also taught me many things in life. May his soul rest in peace.” Tanzwani was born on 2 August 1963 at Khubvi village. He was the third-born of Martina (his late mother) and Rauvhona Tanzwani. He started his primary school education in Khubvi and attended high school at Silemale and Lwamondo until he passed matric in 1982. He then joined the Venda Defence Force in 1984. He was later integrated into the SANDF and worked in different parts of the country and spent most of his time working in Musina. He resigned from the military in 2006, but due to his distinguished leadership skills, he was later called back by the army in July 2013. He was busy establishing a new base which he was going to lead at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Bella, five sisters, his father Rauvhona, seven children and seven grandchildren. Chaplain William Ledwaba of SANDF conducted the funeral sermon.

Factory shop wants to “empower Musina” EFF aims for clean sweep in municipalities Hundreds of businesspeople gathered on Friday to mark the official opening of the new-state-of-the-art premises of Messina Factory Shop in Musina. Messina Factory Shop is part of the 90 Unitrade Management Services (UMS) wholesalers in South Africa. Unitrade Management Services (UMS) is a progressive, innovative and excellence-driven, voluntary trading organization that was started in September 2001, with the aim of providing a unique and comprehensive business solution to independent wholesalers and retailers.
When addressing guests during the event, UMS chief executive officer Jad Pereira said their business model provided all the benefits of a total franchise offer, including a comprehensive range of products and services, but without the associated costs. He says Messina Factory Shop was one of the best subsidiaries of UMS in the country. “This is one of our best retailers that we can be proud of. We have no doubt that the opening of this wholesaler will contribute immensely to the already booming business of Musina. It is our obligation to make sure
that everyone enjoys the good shopping experience that our group offers.” A jubilant director of the factory shop, Mr Abdul Omar, thanked his family, his management team, staff members and all the stakeholders who supported him throughout his successful business career. “My sincere gratitude also goes to Musina Local Municipality for their continuous support. This initiative is here to empower all the people of Musina to make sure that they enjoy a good shopping experience without travelling for long distances.”

“Soil is the source of wealth,” says top farmer When she was growing up, Ntsundeni Margareth Magodi’s parents told her the source of wealth was the soil (Lupfumo Lu Mavuni in Tshivenda). These words kept ringing in her and she is today using the words of wisdom to sustain herself and her family. When her husband, Alson, passed away in 2005, Margareth was faced with the mammoth task of raising her six children singlehandedly. Magodi (58 ) of Manamani-Sedzazwau remembered the wise words and she used her husband’s pension money to buy agricultural equipment. She owns a small plot where she does her farming in the village’s new extension. She farms cabbages, tomatoes, spinach and other vegetables, which are in high demand by the local community, local supermarkets and feeding schemes. “Farming became the only available option for me to fend for myself and my family. My husband, who provided everything for the family, died and I was left on my own with no one to help me. I thought of the children, who were all still of school-going age, and of food for the family. At my age, I was no longer employable,” she said. She said that was when the words her parents had told her came back and she started by buying water storage tanks and other agricultural utensils. “I started by planting cabbages, but I did not have any experience. The first harvest was a disaster as pests were all over the field. I could not recover even my costs, but this did not deter me,” she said. She said the following year she sought assistance
from agricultural officers, who taught her the ropes, and that paid off handsomely and she was able to make a profit on her second attempt. “I have never looked back and, as you can see here, I have just harvested more than 10 000 cabbages. With the proceeds I get from here, I have taken my children to school and we never go to sleep without food on the table. There are challenges in farming, but
I can safely advise other women who are waiting for handouts to stand up and do things for themselves. Soil is the source of wealth. This is what I have come to realize,” she said. Magodi employs one permanent helper and has many seasonal workers. Those seeking advice or wanting to place an order can phone her on 072 269 9512/ 073 311 6928.

“Virginity is the power,” Mayor Matibe “Virginity is the power,” said the executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, when he launched provincial child protection week at the Christian Worshipers Centre Church last Tuesday. Matibe addressed pupils and pleaded with the girls not to engage in sexual intercourse. He appealed to parents to encourage their children “to remain untouched. What is worrying is that, at a very young age, parents talk to their children about how to prevent pregnancy. They talk to them about condoms and injections, but they are not
telling them about the importance of remaining virgins,” he said. Matibe also lambasted “these animals” who use children as sex objects, warning that, if caught, they would be dealt with harshly.”Every week we hear about how our children are being abused.” He also urged early childhood development practitioners to familiarise themselves with the most important elements of the Children’s Act, which are care, support and development. He announced that there would be awareness campaigns to highlight the importance of the child protection register and to encourage all organisations working with children to check their employees against the register for persons who had previously committed offences against children. The head of the Department of Social Development, Ms Daisy Mafubelu, announced that during this week the department would focus mainly on creChildren listen to a police officer during the launch of Child Protection ating more awareness Week. about the care and protection services offered to children. One of the elderly people who participated, Mr Samuel Rambani, said he was worried that these days younger people were the ones who were buried in larger numbers and not the elderly people. Reggae legend joined by sons in sensational live project Each time a new project of Harley’s hits the shelves, the music fraternity shakes from its basement, with fellow artists in the reggae genre and fans celebrating the birth of yet another child by the local, living musical legend. Harley, who was born Colbert Rudzani Mukwevho, needs no introduction in the African music industry. On his latest live DVD, Harley did the project with his two sons, P Postman and Junior Mukwevho, as well as the family band. The project is titled Lion & Son O’ Lion. The DVD boasts 23 songs and an introduction by a programme director. P Postman, a mature artist in his own right, opens up the musical journey with the track You Gonna Know (Who We Are), promising the audience that the performers are not on stage for nothing but to give them the music. His second rendition is Lilly, the very song which made him popular across the country some 10 years ago. “The project was basically about unity between me and my father as father and son – and then as artists,” said P Postman, whose real name is Percy Mukwevho. “He’s the one who mentored me from a very young age. Again, I can only say that this work is also a symbol of many great things to come.” The featured singer, Junior, is a new voice worth following as there are in his youthful voice and performance indications of good things to come. Meanwhile, Harley sings classical songs such as Ro Digeḓa, Nda mu Fara, Vhutshilo ndi Linga and Shut Up your Mouth with the stamina of one who has been
in the industry for decades. In Shut Up your Mouth,, he refutes the scientific viewpoint that humans started as apes and evolved to the stage or condition which humans of today are. He sings that whoever started this evolution theory is disrespecting God since human creation started in God and not what human evolution suggests. Harley believes in peace and it’s the reason why he calls for the justice system to punish all killers. This is articulated aptly in the song Punish All Killers. He seems to hold the view that, without dealing with evildoers who wreak havoc, there would be no restoration of peace in the land. All that Harley could say was: “We didn’t plan the project in terms of lyrics and sound. We just knew we were going to perform and record a live DVD and CD for the fans, whom we also respect. Our performance on this DVD is art at its best as every thing flowed naturally – we still receive calls from people telling us exactly that.” Harley became popular with earlier albums such as Lion in the Sheepskin, I ḓo Nela Roṱhe, Phanḓa and Tshigotshanama. When the last song on the DVD, Ndo Takala Hani, comes to an end, viewers are left with a feeling that they still need more. That’s the problem with good, well-cooked products of art. This is a must have DVD for fans and those who need a good introduction to the reggae genre.

Shayandima “death stretch” claims a life One person died and two others were injured, one of them seriously, when a taxi hit a fully laden crushed-stone truck from the back. The accident happened on the notorious "death road" between the Muledane traffic lights and the Shayandima industrial site on Friday morning. The stretch is notorious because many accidents have happened here. The accident happened just at the entrance to Thabelo Funeral Services, when the heavy truck was hit from behind by a Duthuni-bound taxi. Within a
short space of time, the whole area was swarming with curious onlookers, who wanted to have a glimpse of the shocking and gruesome accident. The truck driver, Mr Robert Nembidzane of A and D Transport, said that around 08:30 while he was delivering crushed stones to one of the brickyards at Shayandima industrial site, he heard a big bang. “I had switched on my indicator and was waiting for oncoming traffic to subside when I heard a loud bang. I looked in my mirrors, and I could see that a taxi had hit me from
behind. I was so shocked and scared but gathered courage and alighted to have a look at what had happened,” he said. He said it was traumatic to know that a person’s life had been lost and others injured in the accident. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo confirmed the accident and said they had opened a culpable homicide docket. "The taxi had four passengers. The driver died on impact and two were injured and taken to the local hospital," he said.
Onlookers who gathered at the scene look in shock at the badly damaged taxi.

Summit to address important land issues Land reform remains critical to agricultural transformation and rural development in South Africa and Africa at large. In Limpopo, the land claims commission managed to settle over 4 000 land claims in the past five years. The Vhembe District Municipality is at present holding a land summit at the Karibu Lodge near Tzaneen in the Mopani District. According to the
municipality's media liaison officer, Mr Moss Shibambu, the summit is discussing the theme “Sustainable land development in the 21st century.” He added that the aim of the summit was to review resolutions taken during the July 2008 land summit, which included the state of readiness by district and local municipalities regarding the implementation of a spatial development framework and the landuse management scheme. He added that the summit also intended to develop strategies "to re-engineer agricultural production through land reform." Different stakeholders in agriculture, such as traditional leaders, Sanco, several NGOs, farm workers, sector departments, institutions for higher learning, organised labour, business forums, land claimants and various communities are attending the summit.

Wheelchair-ridden Huge interest in the beautiful game among region’s Old Crocks elderly of communities in several rural Mugwena and Richard Magavha. our advantage as we have little time to frequent woman calls for help The villages have found a way of taking away boreOne of the coordinators, Mr Louis Mathavha, bottle stores over weekends, while at the same Vho-Veronica Ratshibvumo (57), a resident of Tshavhalovhedzi village in the Nzhelele area, shed tears and threw her hands in the air in desperation, when she told Limpopo Mirror about her tribulation. A wheelchair user, Ratshibvumo is without legs. She said that the road she used on a daily basis was very bad, riddled with stones and had some holes in places. The stones and holes in the ground make it difficult for her to wheel herself around the village and to the main road. “I reported my case to my ward councillor at least three times in the past two years,” she explained. “Each time I went to her, she said the grader was not available and promised that I would get assisted soon.” During the previous rain season, Ratshibvumo had no one to help her to the road. She had to put a bucket of water on her lap and forced her way to the main road. “Once I was on the main road, I would wash my mud streaked arms and other parts of my wheelchair before I could get into a taxi,” she said. “Or else no taxi driver would let me in into their vehicle.” She indicated that all she needed was for the municipality to open up a proper road for her. She said her wheelchair was always broken and she had to take it to Siloam for fixing. “The gentlemen at the hospital know me and they always ask why my wheelchair needs to be fixed all the time,” she said. “And I tell them the truth about my situation. My suffering is too much!” She said government was always speaking about ‘nothing about us without us’ – meaning that the disabled must voice their concerns and get involved in governance. “They say we don’t voice our concerns or represent ourselves, but how can we represent ourselves when we are not given that chance? Councillors do not visit us at our homes. What kind of reports about the village do they take to the municipality? At one time I fell off the wheelchair, face down on the rocks,” she shared her experiences. “I am not making up stories here, I am an elderly person. I accept my disability, and I enjoy life as I am and it’s the reason why I am still alive even today. But it’s high time that our municipalities start considering us and catering for our social needs. A person who is not disabled knows nothing about the disabled person’s suffering.” She said that people should stop seeing differences between disabled and able-bodied persons. “We have the same blood and feelings – which means that we all feel pain,” she said. During Limpopo Mirror’s visit to Ratshibvumo last Sunday, the young Mpho Nemurangoni (18) was pushing her to the main road, where she wanted to take a taxi to church. “I help her when I happen to meet her on the road,” Mpho said. “But I also worry and ask myself if anyone helps her when I am not around?” When contacted for comment, Cllr Margaret Mathalise (Ward 33), said: “There was no need for her to go to the newspapers. She should have approached the local ward committee with her problems. She said I ignored her for two years? That’s not the true reflection of the matter. I will contact the municipality again to find out if the grader has been fixed. Then she will be helped.”

The players, who are commonly known as “Old Crocs”, engage themselves in soccer games during weekends and they are playing in front of capacity crowds most of the times. said most of the players were working and they had little time to exercise or even socialise with others. “This is an opportune time for us to kick away diseases like diabetes, which are lifestyle diseases. Besides its being a health remedy, we are also able to build friendships with people from our neighbouring villages. Youths who come to watch our games are also spared the temptation to engage themselves in crime as they have something to while away their time. This is working to
time improving our health,” he said. He said all games took place on Sundays and they rotated from village to village. The coach of Tshilungoma Masters coach, “Wagga” Magau, was not bitter about the outcome of the match. “This is a game to foster unity among our communities. There is no bad blood between us and we urge members of the community to come in big numbers to our games,” he said.

Indian business family robbed by fake policemen he would be very disappointed if the people seen on CCTV were real policemen. “We rely on the police for protection, but if these robbers are real policemen, I would be very disappointed. There have been many cases of robberies in this community, and we now start suspecting that some of them could have been involved in them,” he said. He added that he hoped the police would do their job and catch whoever was responsible. The Thohoyandou station commissioner, Brig Mbhazima Marungane, said he had ordered investigators to leave no stone unturned and would make sure the perpetrators were
brought to book urgently. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Const Avhafarei Tshiovhe confirmed the incident but could not confirm whether the suspects were real policemen or not. “We are still investigating a charge of house robbery and we hope the investigation will reveal whether they are police members or not. If indeed they are policemen, we will not hesitate to take the necessary steps,” she said. She said no one had been arrested so far and that investigations were continuing. “Anyone with information can contact the nearest police station,” she said.

A robbery at Thohoyandou Block F, where five men masquerading as police officers robbed an Indian business family, has earned widespread condemnation. The robbery, the second of its kind during the past two years, happened a fortnight ago at Mr Dilawar Patel’s home in Block F. Information at Limpopo Mirror’s disposal is that the men, driving a Mercedes Benz with blue police light and siren and armed with rifles, arrived at the family’s home at around 20:00, allegedly looking for a Zimbabwean man who used to work for them. Patel said the security gate was closed but the men produced identification cards and “we did not doubt them and opened the gate. They wanted a certain man from Zimbabwe who had worked for us but left last December. We told them that he was no longer with us, but they insisted on searching his room and found nothing,” said Patel. He said while all that was happening, he decided to call one of his relatives who lived next door. The relative called the police and that was when the robbers panicked and grabbed him from behind and forced all the occupants into the house. They also fired a shot, which grazed the relative slightly. “They demanded money and they took more Mr Dilawar Patel narrates his nasty experience. than R30 000 in cash and a 9mm pistol. They also took three car keys and a passport from one of our assistants before speeding away,” he said. The robbery has sparked an outcry from the Indian community, who have vowed not to open their gates to anybody at dusk. Patel said the incident has left him with no more trust in the police. “I will never trust the police again. Who will trust people who end up robbing you? I regarded the police as keepers of the peace and relied on them for our safety, but I have lost all trust in them,” he said. The whole incident was filmed on CCTV The head of the Thohoyandou police cluster, Gen Nyiketani Baloyi (left), and Thohoyandou’s and a community leader, station commissioner, Brig Marungane, listen to members of the family. High flying Rockers FC give Thula M2 a free soccer lesson Rockers FC secured a place in the regional final of the MMK Funeral Services promotional play-off matches by crushing Thula M2 5-2 in their last round-robin match at the Makwarela Stadium on Sunday. Thula displayed entertaining football, despite the fact that they were already out of the race to the regional final. Rockers did not panic although they knew that a draw in that match would do them more harm than good. Had Rockers drawn in the
match, Muziafera Blue Eagles would have been through to the final. Rockers broke the deadlock in the 11th minute. Mulalo Kudzingana forced his way through the defence of Thula and scored an easy goal from close range. Hulisani Thanyani was on target in the 18th minute to make it 2-0. Thula pulled one back three minutes before the break. Lioyd Ndhuma tried his luck from outside the penalty box with a volley. Ndivhuwo Musie, the Rockers’ keeper, could only watch the ball hit the Vhuthuhawe Munyai of back of the net to bring Thula controls the ball after the half-time score to winning it from Ntsieni 2-1. Mulalo Kudzingana completed his brace by beating the keeper with a ground cutter, following a neat pass by Ntsieni Nengovhela. Both sides effected two changes to their starting lineups in the last half. The keeper of Thula, Mashudu Nemakhavhani, mishandled the ball while trying to palm it away. Mashudu Siobo capitalized to score his team’s fourth goal. Thula did not give in without a fight, though. They con-

Two uphill battles for Western Stars The champion of Group A of the MMK Funeral Services promotional play-offs will be known tomorrow afternoon (Saturday). The last two matches to determine the winner will be staged at the Makwarela Stadium. All three teams playing tomorrow still stand a chance of winning the group championship. Western Stars will play two crucial matches within the space of four hours. They will test their strength against United Artists at 09:00. Should United Artists fail to collect maximum points against Western Stars, it will be over for them. If Artists manage to win the match, their wish will be for Mukula Young Santos to lose their match against Western
Stars. On the other hand, Western Stars will still stand an outside chance of making it to the regional final, provided they manage to beat Mukula Young Santos by a wider margin, when they meet later in the afternoon. Western Stars’ strikers in the form of Eugene Mafukata and Percy Munonoka will give the Santos defence a headache if they are not properly marked. United Artists will pin their hopes on Maanda Mulaudzi and Kutelani Mulaudzi for goals, while their defenders, Witness Mudologi and Ronewa Gidi, will be expected to keep their danger area clean. United Artists will be fighting it without their overlapping midfielder, Robert Baloyi. Baloyi
was given his marching orders in the game against Mukula Young Santos at the Tshifulanani Stadium last Sunday. Western Stars will rest for four hours before going back to the field of play to honour their fixture against Mukula Young Santos, which is scheduled to kick off at 15:00. A draw will be good enough to secure Young Santos a place in the regional final that will be staged at the Makwarela Stadium on Sunday. The second-best teams from each group will meet in the losers’ final on Sunday, starting at 13:00. The group B champions, Rockers FC, will meet the group A winner in the final, which is scheduled to start at 15:00.

Points for Stars Madombidzha Western Stars played their hearts out when they beat Tshibvumo Young Stars 3-0 in a Safa Vhembe MMK Insurance Brokers play-off match played at the Makwarela FNB Stadium on Saturday. Tshibvumo was only good at the far back and their midfielders hesitated for too long and did not release the ball on time for the goal poachers. This sloppy performance put the defence under tremendous pressure. The boys from Madombodzha initiated some promising moves from the centre of the pitch but were denied a number of scoring opportunities by the rock-solid defence of their opponents. Although one of their key midfielders, Phumudzo Mafukate, was reprimanded with a card in the 14th minute, Stars did not lose their fighting spirit. They continued to pressure their opponents by creating promising moves from the centre of the pitch. Things turned against Tshibvumo in the 30th minute, when their defence made a blunder and Percy Munonoka scored his team’s first goal. After the goal, Tshibvumo fought like a wounded tiger. Tshibvumo were the first to introduce a new face to their starting line-up. They replaced Sipho Kekena with Khamusi Netsianda three minutes into the last half. Stars added another goal in their account in the 64th minute. Percy Munonoka went loose from the right corner and blasted in a rocket to complete his brace. Stars later replaced Silas Rammbona with Molatelo Moholwa in a bid to strengthen their midfield. Rammbona formed a deadly combination with Munonoka. Rammbona scored his team’s third goal in 78th minute after a rebound.

Lucky winner Ennie Munyadziwa Mmbara, was one of the lucky 100 South Africans who went away with a brand new Polo Vivo Limited Edition specifically manufactured for Spar customers. The 35 year old Mmbara received her brand new car keys from Sibasa Superspar manager, Mr Captain Mutangwa. She became the first person from the store to be drawn in the Spar Win a Limited Edition Polo Vivo competition 2014. The car was handed over in full view of other customers at the entrance to the store premises in Sibasa on Saturday morning. During the handing over ceremony, products on promotion from some of the suppliers were also handed over to lucky customers. In handing over the car, Sibasa Superspar manager, Mr Captain Mutangwa said that his company will not tire in ploughing back to the community that is their lifeline. He said that it is the second car won at the store with one, a Polo Vivo won by a Khubvi resident during the store’s 50th birthday celebrations. “We are very proud to have produced another winner in this national competition and this goes to show that our customers have confidence in us, and do not just take our competitions for granted,” said Mutangwa. We are also giving her a half tank of petrol so that
she should not get stuck on her way back home. An ecstatic Mmbara who is a police woman in Sibasa could not hide her happiness. “I always was of the perception that no local people could win competitions run nationally until I received a call that I had won a car. I am so humbled, a car is not a small gift and if God let you have it, that is something that you should always be grateful of. The first thing I am going to do is to have this car blessed and prayed for, God will be the driver,” she said. “We are very happy to have a family member chosen as a winner in this big competition, and we will always have a good word about Sibasa Superspar,” the winner’s aunt, Ms Annah Ragimana, said.

MMK Play-offs
Mukula Young Santos nearly in final Mukula Young Santos are almost through to the regional final of the MMK Funeral Services promotional playoffs, after beating United Artists 2-1 at the Tshifulanani Stadium on Sunday. Santos managed to display entertaining football, despite the fact that it was their second match within a space of four hours. They beat Tshibvumo Young Stars 4-1 at the same venue earlier that day. The referee, Mr Jelly Chabani, flashed the first yellow card nine minutes into the game. Sharlen Munyamela of Santos was booked for a late tackle on Takalani Mulaudzi. United Artists were the first to effect change to their starting lineup. Moses Luvhimbi replaced Witness Khuzwayo when the
game was only 18 minutes old. Santos took the lead in the 28th minute. Humphrey Takalani connected with Thuso Ramukumba’s square pass and hit the back of the net. Thomas Makhubele, Artists’ dribbling wizard, was brought down within the box in the 37th minute. That was reason enough for the referee to award Artists a penalty. Artists’ veteran defender, Witness Mudologi, caused an upset by shooting wide from the penalty spot. Young Santos were still leading 1-0 at the end of the first half. Artists were reduced to 10 men early in the last half. Robert Baloyi was given his marching orders, following a second bookable infringement. Young Santos introduced
Maanda Munyai and Rudzani Munyai for Vusani Nendauni and Thuso Ramukumba respectively in the 64th minute. Santos increased the margin five minutes afterwards. Joshua Netshilindi’s volley hit the crossbar and bounced across the goal line. The players, fans and officials of Artists were not happy with the referee’s decision. They argued that the ball had not crossed the goal line. The game came to a halt for about ten minutes as a result of the incident. Artists, however, did not stop fighting, despite all the odds. They continued to press hard in search of goals. Their solitary goal came in the 79th minute. Maanda Mulaudzi finished off a rebound after the keeper mishandled the ball.
Maanda Mulaudzi of United Artists controls the ball, with Sharlen Munyamela of Santos behind him.

Western Stars blast Pull Together away Western Stars enhanced their chances of reaching the regional final of the MMK Funeral Services promotional play-offs
by beating Rabali Pull Together 2-1 at the Tshifulanani Stadium on Sunday. The victory was the second for Western
Stars after beating Tshibvumo Young Stars 3-0 in their opening match at Makwarela on Saturday. Sunday’s game was a war in the true sense of the word. At first it was Pull Toget her who were threatening to find the net, but things changed as the game approached the halfway mark of the first stanza. Rabelani Muofhe, the Pull Together right flank, had his chance in the ninth minute after receiving a brilliant pass from Thabelo Mandiwana. He shot aimlessly from close range and the ball went wide. Western Stars regrouped and took the game to their opponents. No goal was seen during the first half, despite numerous attempts Silas Ramboma of Stars (right) and Rudzani Ralushai of Pull Together by both sides. chase the ball. The game came to a standstill for about 14 minutes in the 54th minute. This after the referee, Mr Avhasei Simba, awarded Western Stars a controversial penalty. The officials and fans of Pull Together invaded the pitch, baying for the referee’s blood. The situation came back to normal after the intervention by the security guards and league officials. Percy Munonoka scored from the white spot. Rabali Pull Together were also awarded a penalty that was surrounded by controversy in the 69th minute. The keeper of Western Stars obstructed a player of Pull Together while saving a square pass, but the referee did not notice that. It was after consulting with his assistant that Simba awarded a penalty to Pull Together. Thabelo Mandiwana scored the equalizer from the penalty spot. Western Stars reclaimed the lead through Lucky Masutha. He scored with a Rudzani Ralushai of Pull Together (left) and Eugene Mafukata of volley in the 84th minute. Stars chase the ball.
Angry players of United Artists confront the referee, Mr Jelly Chabani, accusing him of favouritism.

Good start for Rockers in play-offs The first three matches of the MMK Funeral Services League Promotional play-offs were played over the past weekend. Tshibvumo Young Stars failed to collect even one point. Their opening match was against United Artists, who beat them 2-1 at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday. They also lost 0-3 to Rabali Pull Together at the same venue that afternoon. As if that was not enough to upset the fans, Young Stars donated points to Mukula Young Stars when they lost 1-4 at the Tshifulanani Stadium on Sunday. Their last defeat was against Rabali Pull Together, who beat them 2-1. Mukula Young Santos commenced their programme by beating Rabali Pull Together 1-0. They went on to collect vital points by crushing Tshibvumo Young Stars 4-1 at the Tshifulanani Stadium on Sunday. Young Stars raised the fans’ expectations by beating the other title contenders, United Artists, 2-1.
Western Stars are still in with a chance after winning both matches they have played to date. Their first match was against Tshibvumo Young Stars (3-1) and they fought hard to earn a 2-1 victory over Rabali Pull Together at the Tshifulanani Stadium on Sunday. Rockers are through to the regional final after collecting seven points in the play-off matches. They beat Igwe FC 2-1 in the opening match, drew 1-1 with Muziafera Blue Eagles and crushed Thula M2 5-2 in their final match. Muziafera Blue Eagles opened their programme with a bang. They thrashed Thula M2 5-1 and drew 2-2 with Igwe FC. Thula M2, who also failed to grab a point in the play-offs, lost 1-4 to Igwe FC in their second match and lost 2-5 to Rockers FC. Rockers will meet the winner in Stream A in the regional final at the Makwarela Stadium on Sunday. The overall champion will represent the region in the provincial play-offs later this month.

Who will replace Papic? After parting ways with head coach Kostadin Papic last Wednesday, Black Leopards are going all out searching for the right man for the job. According to the chairman of the club, Mr David Thidiela, applications for the job started to pile up in his office shortly after news about the abrupt ending of the club’s relationship with Papic began to spread. According to Thidiela, most of the job seekers are overseas mentors. When asked whether preference would be given to the local coaches, Thidiela said they would look for the best person, irrespective of his nationality. He refused to be drawn into divulging some of the names of the big time coaches

Happier times ... Coach Kostadin Papic and the boss of Black Leopards, Mr David Thidiela.
who are interested in the job. All he could say was “we will make an announcement soon”. Although Thidiela could not confirm it, Limpopo Mirror was reliably informed that the former Black Leopards and Chippa United head coach, Mr Vladislav Heric, is one of the foreign coaches who has shown interest in the job. Asked to comment about his possible return to the Thohoyandou side, Heric said that he was available for the job if given a chance. When asked how Mr Papic was let go while he was still contracted to the club for 12 months, Thidiela said that there was a provision in the contract which made it possible for him to leave the club after a season if he so desired. Papic entered into a two year contract with Lidoda Duvha at the beginning of last season. Although Thidiela stated that parting ways with Papic was a bitter pill to swallow, Thidiela insisted that keeping a person on the job against his will was as good as a “forced marriage”. He stated that he had done everything in his power to persuade Papic to stay, but in vain. He further indicated that he had finally come to terms with the Serbian’s departure, saying it was time for the club to move on. Papic was announced as the new head coach for the newly promoted Cape Town side, Chippa United, last Thursday. Speaking from the Cape Town International Airport before flying to Serbia last Saturday morning, Papic said that Chippa United had come up with an offer which he couldn’t decline. According to Mr Thidiela, the appointment process for the new coach will be concluded before the team resumes with their training sessions on Monday, 30 June.
