Family loses it all By Jo Robinson
Amanda and Jaco Steenekamp lost everything they owned in less than an hour. Their haunted eyes clearly show the heartbreak of the still-fresh memories of the cries of their beloved lost dogs and birds, after the fire that began in the blink of an eye razed everything that they possessed to ashes. The family were still getting ready for the day that was just beginning at their home on a smallholding in the Southdown farming area outside Louis Trichardt. At around 06:00 on Sunday, 9 December, the couple’s son Raldo (24) heard a loud hissing and banging sound coming from what appeared to be upper part of the back of their large, five-bedroom home. He immediately let his parents know, who then both ran out into the
passage. When they reached the hallway, they saw orange flames high up at the back of the house and a pitch-black wall of smoke. In the instant chaos that ensued, with the shock realisation that the house was burning, they ran out of the kitchen door. Then they realised that their three little dogs had run back in to the master bedroom, which was where they always went when they felt that they needed safety. They called and tried to get back into the home to save their pets, but to no avail. Amanda badly bruised herself in the process of trying to climb through a small window, but the flames made it impossible to enter. The ceilings in the home were all made of knotty pine and quick to ignite, and blazing flames prevented them from getting through to the back of the home. They tried to fight the fire

with their garden hoses, but this made no impact on the fire, and their two African Grey parrots and their daughter’s cockatiel succumbed quickly to the smoke. Even though it was impossible to go through the flames that engulfed their home within minutes, the guilt of being unable to save their helpless pets is clearly
more painful to this family than the fact that they had lost every single one of their possessions. Valuable heirlooms, decades of collections, important documents, electrical equipment, and the things accrued over a lifetime are all gone forever. Even though the fire brigade was called straight away, they arrived only after the

house had already burnt to the ground, and the only flames remaining were a few small, tenacious ones smouldering in a thick beam, which they did extinguish.
Bietjie verder noord is beter neerslae gerapporteer. Oom Barend Jordaan het diep spore in so baie mense se lewens getrap In Memoriam

Traffic officials are going to be on full alert this holiday season Road Safety
Overloading, speeding, drunken driving and unroadworthy vehicles will be at the top of the agenda during this festive season. This is the warning from Musina Traffic Manager Mr Ailwei Mutele. He was speaking during the launch of the Musina road safety festive season campaign last week. Mutele said his traffic officers would have no mercy for any driver or pedestrian who did not observe the rules of the road. “Our wish is to have zero accidents this festive season. No person deserves to lose a life on our roads. We can only achieve this if we have the support from the community structures, the public and our partners. We therefore plead for cooperation, so that we can save more lives during this festive season.” Mutele said it was painful to recall that seven lives had already been lost during a fatal accident at Musina. “Our hearts are still bleeding about the taxi that hit the bus and killed seven people last month on the N1 next to the China Mall here in Musina. That was a horrific accident that we hope will never happen again in this area.” He said that, despite a lack of resources and manpower, his team Mr Ailwei Mutele. would do its best
to bring the perpetrators to book. “Many people are injured due to accidents that can be avoided. Some even lose their lives because of minor mistakes that drivers can avoid. We understand that we have few traffic officers and a shortage of working tools. This will never stand in our way to execute the law.” He advised road users to observe the rules of the road at all times. “We don’t enjoy issuing fines or arresting people. We will be forced to do it if we are not receiving cooperation from road users. Don’t be scared - it’s just the Christmas comet By Jo Robinson
DON’T GO OVERBOARD WHEN LOADING. Our country’s roads are used by almost everyone on a daily basis. Overloading your trailer, taxi or truck and exceeding the maximum height of goods on any vehicle not only causes damage to our road network and bridges, but it also contributes to the serious problem of maintaining road safety in our country. At SANRAL, we believe it is important for you, as a motorist, to know the capacity of your vehicle. It goes a long way in getting the best from it and more importantly, out of South Africa’s road network. In the interests of other roads users, your business and our road network, please do not overload. SANRAL. Beyond roads.

This December, an extra light will be visible in the sky, even to the naked eye, when Comet 46P/Wirtanen (46P) makes its closest ever pass by the earth. Already fondly referred to, by those who take the time to look up, as the Christmas Comet, it is attracting a lot of attention from more than only stargazers. The Zoutpansberger asked Kos Coronaios, whom residents might remember from the Soutpansberg Astronomy Club and who recently moved to Pearly Beach, to tell readers more about this fast-approaching comet. He obliged. “Comet 46P/Wirtanen is a small, short-period comet with an orbital period of 5.4 years. Wirtanen makes a very close (for a comet) approach to earth on 16 December, just a few days after perihelion on 12 December. At around 30 lunar distances (11.5 million km) from earth, it’s the 10th closest approach of a comet in modern times. Predictions are that it could reach naked-eye visibility at close approach, with excellent observing conditions.” Discovered by the astronomer Carl Wirtanen in 1948, 46P is one of what are known as members of the “Jupiter family” of comets, with short orbital periods of 20 years or fewer, with their farthest point from the sun being near to the orbit of Jupiter. These comets can occasionally have their own orbits significantly changed when they approach Jupiter’s powerful gravitational field. Jupiter nudged 46P’s orbit approximately 50 million miles closer to the sun and much closer to earth’s orbit in 1972 and 1984 when it did its Jupiter flypasts. Because of that, the comet will be very visible when it goes by this time. 46P is in fact going to make the 20th closest approach to earth of any known comet since the ninth century and one of the 10 closest since 1950. On 16 December, at around 15:06, which will be four days after it makes its closest ever approach to the sun, 46P will fly by earth at a mere 11 586 350 kilometres away, at a speed of around 33 790.6 kilometres per hour. At this point the comet will become very bright and will certainly be visible to the naked eye. While 46P is fairly small, as comets go, and unlikely to have much of a tail, its head is expected to appear extremely large and much more impressive to see with the use of binoculars or a telescope. “It already has a dust tail, but I’m not sure about an ion one,” said Kos. “The coma is already bigger than 30 arc minutes. That’s the size of the moon as seen from earth. It consists mainly of dust and gas.” This is not going to be a spotlight beam, but rather a soft light in the sky, and for once load shedding might be useful if occurring in the hours of darkness, because darkness is exactly what is needed to get a good view of a passing comet. Experts say that this will not happen again as far as 46P is concerned. When the newspaper asked Kos if it posed any danger to earth, he said: “No danger, and no meteor showers either this time around.” He continued: “At magnitude +5, the comet is easily visible in binoculars, as well as with the naked eye from a reasonably dark sky site [not a light polluted one]. Not quite a Christmas comet in the Terry Lovejoy style, but still a naked-eye one.” According to estimates, the comet is 1.1 kilometres in diameter.
ZOUTPANSBERGER, 14 DESEMBER 2018
Avoiding more than just the usual excesses of the holiday season The end-of-year holiday season is a time of celebration for most people, with excess being the order of the day as far as eating, drinking, and spending are concerned. For people with genuine addiction problems, this season with all its parties and get-togethers can be a difficult time. The Zoutpansberger heard from more than one alcoholic who, although they have not ingested any alcohol for many years, still do not want anyone who does not already know what they suffer from to find out. They have, however, agreed to share a few words and tips for holiday survival, on condition of anonymity. The gentle respect with which members of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) treat everyone was a common thread with both the interviewees here. In an open letter to the media on the AA website, they “respectfully request that you continue to cooperate with us in maintaining the anonymity of AA members. The principle of anonymity is a basic tenet of our fellowship. Those who are reluctant to seek our help may overcome their fear if they are confident that their anonymity will be respected. In addition, and perhaps less understood, our tradition of anonymity acts as a restraint on A.A. members, reminding us that we are a programme of principles, not personalities, and that no individual A.A. member may presume to act as a spokesman or leader of our fellowship. If an A.A member is identified in the media, we ask that you please use first names only…” The Zoutpansberger will use noms de plume in the forms of simply A and B in this instance. “I have not had a drink in over 15 years,” said A. “I doubt that anyone who knows me now would believe you if you told them what I am, and I do not attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in Louis Trichardt, because I would like it to remain that way.” There is a stigma attached to alcoholism that makes most of those who suffer from this illness try their very best to hide it away, even though, according to B, medical aid schemes pay for rehab for both alcohol and drug addictions all the time. “Medical aids are not going to pay for anything frivolous, so the fact that they do pay for these things, just as they happily pay for diabetes and other diseases, should make people more aware of the fact that these addictions are real and serious sicknesses.” “I still get cravings,” said A. “Not often these days, and I have no problem socialising with alcohol drinkers. If I have a craving that gets large enough, I have a friend I phone. So far, so good.” B, on the other hand said that it was a daily struggle. “Stay away from the first drink and remember that your body as an alcoholic reacts differently. Take it one day at a time.” Both A and B say that admitting that they are alcoholics, regardless of how many years it has been since they have actually had a drink, almost always elicits disgust. A said that it had been a long time since a craving managed to get the better of him. “Levels of difficulty vary and so, even though I do not have any alcoholic friends locally,
I do make sure that I have others only a quick phone call away. All that I need now is a cure for my pizza habit.” B also emphasises that the support of others who will understand and empathise is a must. A told the Zoutpansberger that, over the past few years, the work he had done to stay sober had helped him with other, more commonly dangerous behaviour over the Christmas season. “I am not as likely to spend money that I do not have with the impulsivity of my past, and apart from the pizza, I do not spend huge amounts on special food. Expensive gifts are in my past. I focus on caring for people more than I do on spending money on people now.” On the subject of money, B said that “AA do not
accept donations and are completely self-supporting in every way. We give and accept our time and care.” On their website, AA suggest only celebrating with other non-drinkers during the festive season if you feel that you cannot cope with being exposed to alcohol at this point. That way, you do not have to be left out. More tips for celebrating the holidays alcohol-free can be found on the AA South Africa website at www.aasouthafrica. org.za. Wreedaard los boks vol katjies in stormwatersloot langs pad Deur Jo Robinson
“My kleutertjies was in ekstase oor die nuwe maatjies,” het Lita gesê.
“Die kleuters was baie ontsteld omdat
082 965 5151.

Police arrest more than 700 suspects in 24 hours Crime Prevention
With criminals generally being more active over the festive season, Limpopo police have announced that they arrested more than 700 suspects in several joint operations across the province. “These simultaneous operations were running for twenty-four hours in all the clusters, especially in the crime-infested areas, including all Ports of Entry,” said provincial police spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe in a press release on Wednesday. The intelligence-driven operations resulted in the arrest of 722 suspects between the ages of 18 and 69 for various offences, including the contravention of the Immigration Act, the Road Traffic Act, theft, TRIO crimes, assault, armed robbery, possession of suspected stolen property, dealing in drugs and more. Various police units at all stations, including the Public Order Police Unit and the Tactical Response Team (TRT), took part, with the operations being conducted through, among others, road blocks, stop-and-search operations, patrols and the tracing of wanted suspects. In the Mankweng policing area, two suspects
aged 35 and 45 were arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. An R5-rifle and 97 rounds of live ammunition were recovered. Meanwhile, in the Hoedspruit policing area, a 69-year-old man was arrested at Molalane village, also for the illegal possession of ammunition. During the arrest, 519 rounds of live ammunition and eight home-made silencers were recovered. In the Makhado policing area, a 42-year-old man was arrested for house robbery, with the police recovering a Toyota Quantum, two couches and a table. According to Ngoepe, various items were recovered during the operations, with an estimated value of over R2 million. This included 17 motor vehicles, 25 firearms (including rifles, magazines and ammunition), 17 cellphones, six laptops and four televisions. Following the operations, the provincial commissioner of the SAPS, Lieutenant-General Nneke Ledwaba, praised the men and women in blue for their dedication and commitment displayed during these operations. “The arrested suspects have already started appearing before different Magistrate Courts throughout the province. The police investigations in all these cases are still continuing,” said Ngoepe.

082 058 7601.

Load shedding calls for some planning Louis Trichardt residents were breathing a sigh of relief at the prospect of no load shedding over the past weekend. Unfortunately, after a stressful week of several outages, many realised that it was going to be a weekend without water instead. While not in actual darkness anymore, people were in the dark as to what was happening with the water supply and so contacted the newspaper for help. One resident said that she understood that having no power for long periods of time could affect the water supply, but wanted to know: “How is it that a few hours out on Thursday could end up with no water at all for days?” The Zoutpansberger spoke to several residents concerning this latest in a long and regular history of water crises in Louis Trichardt, power outages notwithstanding. At the time of our going to press, many parts of Louis Trichardt remained without water. The spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, once again failed to respond to the questions in the email sent to him and did not reply when the newspaper tried to phone him either. Local Democratic Alliance (DA) representative Mr Brian du Plooy stated that the water stoppage was due to a “power outage at the Albasini Water Treatment plant” last week. On Tuesday, he stated

that supply had been restored, although residents in higher-lying areas would have to wait longer to see water coming out of their taps. Residents of Louis Trichardt, while getting angrier at these regular periods without water, are as resilient as always and shared a few of the ways that they cope with the challenges of the times. Not everyone has a borehole, and not everyone can afford to purchase the large outside water tanks or the pumps that go with them that many people now consider standard. One forward-planning local stores lots of smaller plastic containers full of tap water along the walls of her garage. This is a cheap way to ensure that you always have some back-up water in case of an unexpected stoppage. Another resident, who lives in a flat and so does not have the space to have a large water tank, has bought a smaller one that fits nicely in a corner of her bathroom. These tanks are available in very manageable sizes at reasonable prices at hardware outlets. All the residents that the Zoutpansberger spoke to have their own tips for surviving load shedding as well as water shortages. These included more than simply stocking up on candles, matches, and tins of baked beans. Yolanda Cronje, co-owner of Free Living in Louis Trichardt, who supplies food for the health conscious as well as the gluten- or sugar-intolerant, suggested that when you know that load shedding is a possibility, a little forward planning can go a long way. Buy what you will need to make cold meat and salad platters. If the weather is cold, use a slow cooker to prepare a warm meal while you are at work, or freeze prepared food that can be quickly reheated after thawing on a gas stove or small braai fire. Louis Trichardt residents have made many changes to make their lives easier, and with the probability of more load shedding, as well as more water outages, everyone agrees that there are always ways to make life a little easier for when that happens. Some local eateries use gas stoves and serve meals by candlelight. Many local shops stock large varieties of solar- or battery-powered lighting and cellphone chargers. Keeping plastic containers of frozen water in your freezer is useful, both for helping your fridge stay cold on hot days when the power is off and for having extra to drink if the water goes off afterwards. All residents that we spoke to agreed that being prepared is better than being caught off guard, and some said that sometimes not having a choice about getting back to nature a little without all the noise of modern life was not always a bad thing.

Jingle Bell Toy Ride 2018
Local cyclists spread some Christmas cheer last Friday when they took to the streets as part of the Soutpansberg Cycling Club’s annual Jingle Bell Toy Ride in Louis Trichardt. The “entry fee” for this popular event is a soft toy, which will later be donated to less fortunate children to be handed out over Christmas. Another condition for participation was that cyclist decorate their bikes with Christmas lights, hence the show of colour residents saw riding through the streets.
