The bones were kept in the ceiling of the Malale Community Centre for the past 12 years, after the family refused to bury her until the people who had allegedly murdered her were apprehended. The ceremony was attended by community members, Cllr Fistos Mafela, family members and Vhamusanda Vho-Nemalale. The girl’s mother, Ms Josephine Ndou, said her little girl was sent by a relative to buy bread when she disappeared. “We became worried when my little girl did not return and it was becoming late. We reported the matter to the local headman, who immediately summoned the police. We searched all over, but she was nowhere to be found. The search continued for two weeks, but it was fruitless.” She said community members saw an old lady with a young girl on her back heading towards the bush on the same day her little girl disappeared. “People said the child was crying uncontrollably, but the old woman kept on walking to the bush. I believe it was my child who was being delivered to muti killers,” she added. MM wants to restore former glory Mr Johnson Matshivha is the new municipal manager of the Musina Municipal Council. He was appointed during a special council meeting on Monday afternoon. The position became vacant after the resignation of Mr Abram Luruli, who had served the municipality for 14 years, on 4 September this year. Mr Pedron Nndwa, the community services manager, then acted as municipal manager until Mr Shumani Razwiedani was seconded from Vhembe District Municipality to act as the accounting officer of the border town municipality. Matshivha is not a novice in administration and government management. He worked as corporate services manager for Musina Municipality four years ago. He rejoined the municipality in the same position four months ago, before accepting the hottest seat in the municipality. Before he rejoined Musina
Municipality, he worked as project manager for the Development Bank of South Africa. In 2008, he was the senior manager for infrastructure management and PPP in the Limpopo Provincial Treasury. He also worked as a coordinator for education and advocacy for the Competition Commission in 2006. In 2004, he was the deputy manager for secretariat services in the Limpopo Provincial Department of Health. Between 2002 and 2003, he has also served as labour practioner and labour relations officer for the Department of Public Works and the Office of the Premier respectively. Matshivha is armed with various academic qualifications, which include a law degree from the University of the Western Cape, a Certificate in Legal Writing from the University of Cape Town, an Executive Leadership Municipal Development Programme (ELMDP) from the
University of Pretoria, a Project Appraisal and Risk Management (PARM) Certificate from the Duke University in the USA and a Programme in Project Management (PPM) from the University of Pretoria. On behalf of the council, Mayor Carol Phiri says there was no doubt that Matshivha would take the Musina Municipality to a higher level. “Matshivha is a well-experienced manager and we are pleased that he has accepted to take responsibility for the running of this municipality. We will give him our full support to make sure that he executes his duties with ease.” She also passed her gratitude to Mr Shumani Razwiedani “for steering the municipality in the right direction over the past six months.” Mr Matshivha says he is ready for the hot seat. “I believe in team work and I’m ready to take Musina Municipality back to its former glory days.”

Deceased’s family want some answers The family of Mr Raymond Machete (31), who was allegedly shot by the police at Tshidzengani-Mpheni a fortnight ago, need answers from the police. According to a friend of the deceased, Mr Thomas Raluswinga, the incident leading to Machete’s death took place on 2 December. He said several people were sitting at the Tshidzengani complex when the police arrived. The police then started frisking them. According to him, an officer was frisking him and told him that he was under arrest for public drinking. “I told the policeman that I was not using alcohol, but that other people were drinking next to the spare-parts shop. The policeman then tried to force me into the police van, but I refused to get in. I overpowered him and the officer pulled out his firearm. Realising that he was going to shoot me, I fell down when he pulled the trigger. An innocent man, who was coming from the opposite direction, was hit,” said Raluswinga. What upsets the community and family the most is the fact that the police officer allegedly produced a firearm during the incident. Raluswina said it was not necessary to use a firearm, as the situation was relatively calm. Mr Albert Machete, uncle of the deceased, said that his family and the community were still shocked about the incident. He said Mr Raymond Machete was rushed to the nearby Elim Hospital. He was later transferred to the provincial hospital in Polokwane and died on the way. According to Albert, the police had promised to take action against the officer who had fired the shot, but nothing had happened. “They did not even visit my family after the incident.” He said
that when the family visited the police station on the day of the incident, they were promised that the officer would be arrested, but he was still on duty. The late Mr Machete was buried at the Mpheni cemetery last Sunday. He is survived by his mother, wife and two children. The spokesperson for the Makhado cluster, Captain Maano Sadiki, confirmed the incident. He said that the police had opened a murder docket, following the incident. He added that Mr Machete had been shot in the head. Sadiki added that, pending the outcome of the investigation, they would take internal action against the officer. On Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Waterval police, W/O Kedibone Mabatha, confirmed that the suspect was still on duty and that he had not yet been charged.
The deceased, Mr Raymond Machete.

Seven officers of Salvation Army ordained
Parents call for sacking of principal
Hundreds of Salvation Army members from all over South Africa and the neighbouring countries gathered at the Thohoyandou Town Hall last weekend, for their 2012 commissioning event. The event was a blessing for the locals, who had had to travel to Johannesburg in previous years. It was the first commissioning event ever in Limpopo. The gathering was blessed by the church’s leader, Gen Linda
The situation at Siambe Primary School outside Sibasa was tense last Friday, when angry parents called for the sacking of a principal, accused of having stolen food meant for poor pupils. The ugly situation developed during a yearend function held at the school premises. The event, which was supposed to be a joyful year-end function for the principal, Ms Doreen Shimange, her staff and their guests turned nasty when the principal of the school was shamed in front of the community, teachers and pupils. The principal stands accused of being behind the mysterious disappearance of foodstuffs meant for poor pupils at the school. It is alleged the principal had, on 20 November, with the assistance of a cook and a teacher, loaded a bag full of groceries from the school in her car. Allegations are that one of those who assisted her blew the whistle on her and the staff at the school knew about the incident. Briefing the parents, Mr Emmanuel Mushome, SGB chairperson, said that he received a call from the circuit manager who informed him of the allegations of theft. “I did not know anything about it. What I did was to call a meeting where we discussed the issue with the circuit. We also called in witnesses who were present when the food was taken. The principal, however, said she did not know anything about the theft,” said Mushome. He added that committee members had already taken a decision on the matter and the fate of the principal but did not want to impose it on the people. “We felt we should not take a decision on your behalf. That is the reason we called you here to deal with this matter collectively,” he said. Witnesses to the alleged theft were called during the meeting and they gave evidence to the
effect that they helped the principal in loading the foodstuffs in her car. One witness, a cook at the school, said she was asked by the principal to load a bag full of foodstuffs. “I did not question as to where the food was going. As an ordinary employee, I have no rights to question the principal; I just did as ordered,” she said. She said that after being confronted by other staff members, she went back to the principal and told her that what she had done would land her in trouble and that she should return the stuff, which she did not do. A teacher also corroborated the evidence, saying that she was also requested to help load the bag in the principal’s car. The principal was also afforded the opportunity to address the community, but she pleaded innocent and said that there were people at the school who were just against her and who would do anything to see that she vacate her seat as the principal of the school. “I know nothing about this. I am being targeted because of my stance against those who are abusing the school feeding scheme food. I rebuked those who have testified against me as they are stealing, and this is how they get to me by starting a smear campaign against me,” she said. The principal could not even finish giving her own side of the story as community members began jeering at her. The community members then unanimously agreed that the principal was no longer wanted at the school, with immediate effect. She was also threatened not to set foot at the school in the new year. An emotional Shimange left the meeting in a huff and when this paper wanted comment from her, she slammed her office door and packed her stuff in a hurry. After some minutes, she had packed her own things, but this time she gave the reporter her phone number. In an interview, Mushome confirmed that tensions have been simmering for some time between the school governing body and the principal. He said the principal had told the school governing body that she was no longer interested in serving the school. He also mentioned that door frames and bricks had gone missing from the school, but this was not reported to the police. “We have many issues here and are very suspicious about the rampant theft at our school. Why are the thefts not reported to the police? We are also worried that we are working with someone who is no longer interested in working with us. Principal Doreen Shimange, welcoming the We have lost interest in her and we feel that it parents and other stakeholders before she would be better that she left us in peace,” added was shamed. Mushome.
Bond, who flew all the way from London to officiate. The gathering started on Friday and the highlight was on Sunday, when seven officers of the church were ordained. Clad in their army-like uniforms, members took Thohoyandou town by storm when they marched, led by a brass band, along the streets of Thohoyandou. The procession started from the local town hall. There was another procession on Sunday,
which started at the local police station and continued to the town hall, where the function was held. In her message, Gen Bond urged the newly ordained Proclaimers of the Resurrection to lead exemplary lives and “to continue proclaiming His resurrection through service and daily witness. People will need to see that Jesus Christ is alive in you, that you live in him and for him and that you find in Jesus the fullness of life that nothing else or no one else can offer,” she said.
The march through Thohoyandou was a spectacle to watch and the streets were lined with curious onlookers. By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho

SAPS fire teargas at rowdy travellers
The executive mayor of Vhembe, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, is photographed with Ms Florence Radzilani, MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison, during a recent party staged to celebrate the successful political career of Matibe. The photo was taken at Mufulwi, outside Tshilamba. Photo: Ndivhuwo Musetha.
The South African police had to fire tear gas last Friday in a bid to control rowdy travellers at the Beit Bridge Border Post. Indications are that an excess of 2 000 travellers, mostly Zimbabweans, are now crossing the border into South Africa every day. The border has been congested for the past few days, with travellers spending several hours in the queues. According to witnesses, the chaos, which started at around 09:00, saw hordes of people fleeing in different directions as the tear gas filled the air. “We were queuing outside the immigration tent when some people started jumping queues, causing disorder as everyone jostled each other. Police then came in and fired tear gas. Everyone fled in different directions as the smoke filled the entire space,” said Mr Jacob Nyathi, a local resident. Another traveller, Ms Nomsa Dube, said she had to cancel her trip to Musina when she heard
the news. “My friend, who was also in the queue awaiting immigration clearance on the South African side, phoned me, telling me about the chaos and I had to cancel my trip. She said people were sprayed with tear gas as police were trying to control the queues, which had become uncontrollable,” she said. The situation later returned to normal as police and Home Affairs officials jointly controlled the queues. A South African Home Affairs official at the border post, who declined to be named, confirmed the incident.“We have been handling an increased volume of travellers over the last two weeks, especially on the entry side, resulting in a lot of pressure on inadequate immigration staff,” said the official. The peak period normally begins around midDecember as scores of Zimbabweans working in South Africa start flocking home to spend Christmas with their families.

15 Years in jail for killing his girlfriend
The mayor of Thulamela, Cllr Grace Mahosi, was recently spotted doing shopping in the Mutsindo Mall. The down-to-earth mayor was simply dressed and she merged unnoticed into the crowd. Photo: Ndivhuwo Musetha.
A 25-year-old taxi driver, who had killed his girlfriend, was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment by the Regional Court at Makhado (Louis Trichardt) a fortnight ago. The court found that Khathutshelo Israel Maano had hit his girlfriend and the mother of his twoyear-old daughter with a brick on the head, after a heated argument on 14 August about the issue of the money he normally sent to the victim for sending their young daughter to a local crèche. The accused had pleaded guilty and admitted that he had struck the deceased, Jane Rambevha (25), at least three times on the head and face. He admitted that Rambevha had died because of the skull fracture she had sustained when he assaulted her. According to the forensic doctor who testified in court, the deceased had sustained a 9cm fracture at the base of the skull, severe bruises on her face and, consequently, excessive bleeding. He said that “excessive force was used to cause the deceased’s death”. “I’ve committed the offence and I deserve to be punished,” said Maano through his attorney, Mr Desmond Mphaphuli. “I am very remorseful. The crime was committed out of grief.” Mphaphuli pleaded with the court not to impose a harsh prison term on the accused. He said the accused was a
first-time offender and direct imprisonment of 10 years might do, since Maano had shown remorse from the beginning of the case. The court indicated that violence towards women and children was rife in the district and that such a behaviour would not be tolerated in society. “Despite campaigns such as 16 Days of Activism, crimes of extreme brutality against women are committed,” said the court. “Awareness campaigns like this one indicate that the nation has had enough of crimes against women.” The accused was sentenced to an effective 15 years’ imprisonment and was further declared unfit to possess a firearm. The deceased’s relatives expressed their relief that the case has come to an end. They said coming to court through the trial period was stressful because it reminded them that their child had died a violent death. By Mashudu Netsianda
Man arrested for smuggling children Unregistered cross-border transporters, commonly known locally as omalayitsha, keep on smuggling undocumented Zimbabwean children into South Africa through the Beit Bridge Border Post. Last Sunday, South African immigration officials at the border intercepted a Gauteng-registered Toyota Quantum with 19 undocumented minors aged between two and 17 years on board and arrested the 33-year-old driver, Never Tshuma (33) of Emakhandeni in Bulawayo, who was transporting them. Soon after the interception, the children were deported and taken to the Save the Children UK centre in Beit Bridge. Police spokesperson Chief Supt Lawrence Chinhengo said Tshuma would appear in court on charges of contravening a section of the Immigration Act (assisting border jumpers). “Our preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the vehicle brought the children from Bulawayo. On arrival in Beit Bridge, he helped them cross the border into South Africa illegally,” he said. Eleven of those children have since been identified by their parents. “The police continue to urge people to desist from crossing the border into South Africa illegally, as they risk prosecution. “We believe omalayitsha are part of human trafficking syndicates targeting vulnerable young children specifically as there is a demand for labour and sexual exploitation in South Africa,” he said. Chinhengo warned parents against entrusting their children to unregistered cross-border transport operators. Zimbabwean parents living in South Africa often pay omalayitsha to facilitate the smuggling of their children across the border during holidays. Lately, the number of Zimbabwean children being smuggled into South Africa by omalayitsha, for fees ranging between R600 and R1 000, has increased. This has largely been attributed to stringent South African immigration law. According to the new regulations, which were effected in May, a parent or guardian intending to travel to South Africa in the company of minor children are required to produce an affidavit signed by the other parent or both parents, in the case of those travelling with a guardian, before the child’s passport is stamped. The document is reportedly required for children below the age of 17. The move is mainly aimed at curbing child trafficking. South Africa has adopted the United Nations Protocols on Convention against Transnational Organised Crime, one of them being child and women trafficking. Notice
Observation evening The Soutpansberg Astronomy Club in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) will have a stargazing evening on Saturday, 15 December, from sunset onwards. Everyone is welcome and for more information and directions, contact Kos on 079 148 4934.

Malawian gets four years for vehicle theft
"Reach for the power. Transcend!" These were the words of Mrs Angie´tjie Phaswana (Principal of Paradise Maname Combined School) during their annual “graduation” and open day a fortnight ago. Today´s pupils are to transcend and go beyond barriers of learning, barriers of poverty, of ignorance, of the prevailing dependency syndrome, she added. The event was an opportunity to motivate the pupils and teachers to do more. In our photograph are Mrs Phaswana with some of the 2012 Grade R pupils.
One of the eight Malawians who were recently arrested by police at Beit Bridge for being involved in a well-organised car-theft and smuggling syndicate was sentenced to an effective four years in jail. The Malawians were arrested in Beit Bridge after stealing seven top-of-the-range vehicles to the value of about R4 million from South Africa before smuggling them into Zimbabwe through undesignated entry points along the Limpopo River. The eight suspects were arrested during a routine police exercise along the borderline. Abou Benello Jussabi (30) of Mbelunge village in Malawi was convicted on his own plea of guilty to car theft charges by Regional Magistrate Joseph Mabeza. He was sentenced to six years in jail, of which two years were conditionally suspended for five years. The prosecutor, Mr Johannes Tlou,
said that on 8 August, the complainant had parked his car, a Toyota Fortuner, at his home in Hilton, Johannesburg, Gauteng, before locking the doors. It was testified that on the same day, Jussabi went to the complainant’s house where he managed to unlock the doors of the car before using duplicate keys and stealing it. The court was told that on 13 August, Jussabi then drove the car to Musina before proceeding to an illegal crossing point along the Limpopo River and smuggling the car into Zimbabwe. Acting of a tip-off, police were deployed to various sites along the river and sealed off the major highways. Jussabi was arrested, following his interception at a toll gate in Lutumba outside Beit Bridge along the Beit Bridge-Masvingo road. He was asked to produce the vehicle's documents, and he failed to do so, leading to his arrest and recovery of the stolen vehicle, valued at R300 000. He was also found in possession of fake vehicle registration documents, counterfeit temporary import permits of the stolen car and duplicate keys. The tracking and locking system of the car had also been tampered with. Further investigations by police indicate that Jussabi was linked to a syndicate involving employees of some vehicle tracking companies in South Africa. Soon after stealing the cars, Jussabi together with his colleagues would then smuggle the vehicles to Malawi using Zimbabwe as transit point. They would then sell the stolen cars in Malawi to a ready market.

We are very proud of the success of our present and former members of staff.” The founder and advisor of the Vhembe Media Association, Mr Wilson Dzebu, was equally jubilant about Mushiana’s achievement. “He is one of our own and we are delighted by his good
work. Beating all his counterparts from all the provinces of South Africa is a great achievement. Great photographers like Mushiana don’t do different things, they just do things differently. He is a unique photographer who conveys what a thousand words cannot. We hope other young journalists will learn that even people from disadvantaged backgrounds can succeed, based on their attitude and zeal to work hard.” Mushiana says it takes more than just a nice camera and a desire to take pretty pictures in order to be successful in this creative yet technical, professional field. “A good photographer is one who notices things others are oblivious to. Most of my photos are of ordinary subjects, but are taken in an extraordinary manner; be it lighting, angle, contrast, background, foreground and focal length. Keeping on learning new things every day makes my photographic skills grow every
day.” He added that he was not surprised when he was announced the 2012 Sowetan Photographer of the Year. “I deserve it. This is the culmination of my efforts over the past 20 years in the journalism industry. I would like to thank everyone who supported me throughout. Special thanks to the Limpopo Mirror for giving me the opportunity to realise my potential.” The editor of Sowetan, Mr Mpumelelo Mkhabela, said that the editorial team had selected Mushiana for this prestigious award because he displayed hard work, dedication, creativity and extraordinary photographic skills. Mkhabela said Musiaina was employed as a photographer, but he went the extra mile by also writing good stories. “The company is proud to have a good person like him and we are still expecting more from him,” Mkhabela said.

Ten years for stealing truck at border post A 23-year-old Beit Bridge resident, who was arrested at a road block after stealing a South African haulage truck at a local service station, was sentenced to 10 years in jail. Respect Chauke of House Number 1532 Dulibadzimu Township in Beit Bridge pleaded not guilty to a charge of motor theft but was convicted by Magistrate Joseph Mabeza on Friday. He will serve an effective eight years in jail after two years of the sentence were conditionally
suspended for five years. Prosecutor Johannes Tlou said that on 23 October at around 19:00, the complainant was cleaning his employer’s truck, a Scania, at the Caltex Service Station in Beit Bridge. After he had finished cleaning the vehicle, he left the engine running with the keys in the ignition as he returned the bucket to the garage storeroom. Chauke, who was observing proceedings from a distance, then took advantage of the complain-
ant’s absence, got into the truck and drove it away. On coming back, the complainant discovered that the truck was missing and he was alerted by his assistant, who had spotted the truck being driven away. They then gave chase with another vehicle, a Nissan Navara, and caught up with Chauke at a road block, about 10km out of the border town, where he had been stopped by police. Tight relationship between two councils The relationship between Musina Municipality and their counterparts in Zimbabwe, the Beit Bridge District Rural Council, continues to blossom as the two councils continue to work together in community development initiatives. This became evident when representatives from the Zimbab we Tourism Authority visited Musina to showcase their tourist attractions on the other side of the border. The two councils signed a twinning agreement of friendly relations and cooperation on 29 October 2004. The relationship is also aimed at strengthening relations and co-operation in areas around service delivery, economic development, tourism and corporate governance. Musina Mayor Carol Phiri said the twinning agreement aimed to help South Africa and Zimbabwe in the development of modern
and efficient administrations and organisations at central, regional and local level, with the structures, human resources and management skills needed to implement the same standards as friendly states. “Our twinning agreement provides the framework for administrative and political networking to understand each other better. The other main distinct feature of our twinning agreement is the direct exchange of specific-experience legislation implementation.” She said since the twinning agreement had been signed in 2004, there had been many benefits for both parties. “This includes exchange of experiences and knowledge based on equal-level communication between the two councils. We also share the best practices in public administration, knowledge of political administrative systems, training and improving profes-
sional capacity, sharing ideas in organisational practices and culture, improvements in managerial styles, better communication and co-ordination between and within the two councils.” The Beit Bridge area manager of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, Ms Bertha Mutowemba, said the working relationship between the Musina Municipality and the Beit Bridge Rural District Council was very important because it promoted cooperative governance. “We are here today to promote our tourist attractions because we want people to know what we have on the other side of the border. The twinning agreement also specifies that we will work together to promote tourism, and this is exactly what we are doing. Many people are impressed with what we have and we have no doubt that the number of tourists will increase this festive season,” she added.

Ten years for raping neighbour A 33-year-old man from Nemakonde village outside Beit Bridge was sentenced to an effective 10 years in jail last Friday, for raping a 25-year-old mentally ill neighbour. Allen Munyengeri pleaded not guilty to rape but was convicted by Regional Magistrate Mrs Esther Muremba. He was sentenced to 14 years, of which four years were conditionally suspended for five years. It was testified that on an unknown date, but sometime in August last year, Munyengeri went to the woman’s homestead and photographed her. He is a freelance photographer, plying his trade in the area, and was
invited by the victim to come and take her photo. The court heard that on the next day, Munyengeri returned to the woman’s home and found her alone and raped her once. After the incident, the victim did not tell anyone, but the issue came to light when the woman fell sick and was taken to a local clinic. The nurse who attended her suspected that she was pregnant and asked her who could be responsible. The court heard that the woman revealed that she had been raped by Munyengeri and a report was then made to the police, leading to his arrest.

So, try to show love for your community and that love will dispel all your fears and frustration.” Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Centre’s chaplain, Khathutshelo Raphalalani, told the three men to start showing the world that the rehabilitation therapy which the centre offered them was sound. “You do good works and make us proud,” Raphalalani said. In a move to support ex-prisoners to stand on their feet after serving lengthy prison terms, the New Life after Prison organisation gave three ex-offenders equipment to start their own businesses. The event was held at the Ferdie Beyers Hall in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) last Friday. David Tsamaka (51), Steven Mukhudi (35) and Albert Ramakulukusha (52) received a sewing machine, car-wash machine and welding machine respectively. Tsamaka travelled from Tzaneen for the event, while Mukhudi and Ramakulukusha are from the Vhembe district. All three ex-offenders expressed sincere appreciation towards the New Life after Prison project, saying that they felt blessed and efficiently supported. Adv Azwihangwisi Makulana from the University of Venda said his institution held the exoffenders' vision of reintegration into society in high esteem as they went to work in open society. He added that there were many people who were still in prison because of their refusal to understand the importance of rehabilitation. “We respect you because you did not undermine the programmes which are offered to offenders in prison,” he said. “We are now making a call for you to start interacting with us through your work in different communities.” Ramakulukusha, who spent 16 years in prison for robbery and car hi-jacking, was released on parole in June this year. “Prison has allowed me to become a very positive man in my thinking and conduct,” he said confidently. “I understand that what I was doing before going to prison was bad. Now I try to focus on rebuilding my life through good deeds.” the former correctional services area commissioner for North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo, Vhamusanda Vho-Watson Tshivhase, encouraged the three beneficiaries to utilize the equipment and start being productive in their communities. “Most of those in prison are recidivists,” he said. “We need to find more avenues of helping offenders look after themselves upon their release. We are also making a national call for businesspeople to support New Life after Prison, for the project to cover a large number of ex-offenders across the country.” Vitus Manwadu is one of the ex-offenders who has benefited from New Life after Prison, when

Headman Tsetsana finally installed at Madaulo Mr Tito Mbedzi (37) was officially installed last week as the village headman of Tsetsana under Chief Matibe in the Beit Bridge District. The installation ceremony was held at Headman Tsetsana’s homestead in Madaulo village outside Beit Bridge on Friday, after three years of a local
traditional-leadership vacuum in the area. “I am happy I have been appointed headman in this part of the district, three years aftern the death of my father in 2009,” he said. According to him, traditional leaders played a critical role in the implementation of government programmes and spearheading development

in rural communities. “As traditional leaders, we have a role to safeguard our traditional cultures and values as the custodians,” he said. Beit Bridge District has a complement of 10 headmen and two paramount chiefs, responsible for the western and eastern sides of the border town. Out of the 10 headmen, three areas, namely Siyoka, Makhado and Tshinoni, are still vacant. Chief Matibe of Beit Bridge East was installed last year, following the death of his father, Chief Chichewo Matibe, in 2010. His counterpart on the western side, Mr Cleopatra Sitauze, is yet to be installed as Chief Sitauze. Beit Bridge West has been without a substantive paramount chief, following the death of Chief Pariti Sitauze in 2005. Since that time, there has been an acrimonious chieftainship wrangle that has rocked the family, dividing it into two rival camps.

New ARV’s a relief for patients The Department of Health has awarded an ARV tender to three companies to supply a new form of HIV therapy, the fixed-dose combination (FDC), which will be made available in April 2013. In his announcement the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, said that the government had awarded a new tender for the triple-fixed-dose combination of tenofovir, emtricitabine and efavirenz. All three medicines will be combined into a single tablet. A patient will no longer have to take three tablets a day and can now take one tablet once a day. “This new tender was initially expected to cost R8.1 billion, based on prices of the current tender,” said Motsoaledi. “However, in pursuit of affordability and using innovative methods, we have been able to reduce the cost of the tender by 38%. That means a massive saving of R2.2 billion.” He added that, for the sake of clarity, the new tender had moved from an original cost of R8.1 billion to R5.9 billion for two years. The saving means that the department can treat more patients with the same budget. “I want to emphasise that our understanding of cheapest and simplest treatment for the largest number of patients means affor-
dable and not low quality,” he said. The current ARV programme is an expanding one, where 1.7 million patients are receiving treatment. The department hopes to expand this to 2.5million by the end of 2014. The good news about the FDC is that it has major benefits for patients in terms of compliance. “It also means that logistics and storage are reduced,” Motsoaledi said. “Additionally, there are fewer side effects with this combination.” He further stated that, as from April 2013 onwards, all pregnant women will be given the fixed-dose combination during pregnancy and breastfeeding and thereafter, if their CD4 count is less than 350. “We will also be keeping a register of these patients, so we can monitor their progress and check for side effects,” he added. According to the department, the fixed-dose combination is more effective than dual therapy and has fewer side effects for the pregnant mother, in addition to its convenient dosage regimen. The majority of patients on the 3 ARV drugs will be able to switch to the fixed-dose combination. “For those who cannot be switched to FDC, we are still going to keep the individual ARV drugs as well,” he announced.

Cornerstone release a brand new hit album The much-anticipated album from one of the area’s finest pop bands is finally out. Cornerstone’s new offer is titled Tshanduko/Changes. This group from the heartland of Venda has been mesmerizing music lovers since 2008, after the release of their first full-length album. “Thanduko is our third studio album,” said lead vocalist Ngerezah. The sleeve is simple, with very effective designs and a record-setting feel which makes the listening of the songs enjoyable and refreshing. “Tshanduko/ Changes is a new genre breed which we call stone music,” continued Ngerezah. “It is a run between western pop and a soul reggae sound, yet very unique.” For this album, Cornerstone worked with well-known artists
like Hani Mutele, Khakhathi “Muhuweleli” Tshisikule, Khathu Nemapate, Charlie Sinyosi, Rudzani and Archie. “The whole project was like a survival camp,” said the group. “At times we worked under pressure and even argued and cracked lots of jokes. All was for the best quality we can possibly deliver.” Cornerstone maintains that working with many artists has a positive benefit for host artists, when every artist gives their best for the achievement of quality material. “It wasn’t eas. The camp was full of musical vipers and venomous young ones who pushed everyone to the edge,” said Ngerezah. “I so love this chapter”. The musicians have received praise and acknowledgement from across the country. One

Former pupil ploughs back into old school As a rural boy, Maanda Makungo knows of the hardship that is experienced in rural schools. Some of the pupils he attended school with at Makhuvha Primary School came to school barefoot and without uniforms and books. When he left the school some years ago, he told himself that he would one day come back and make a difference to the children at his former school. Today, Makungo can afford many of the things he wished for as he is a successful businessman and senior specialist at Data Support at Vodacom, based in Polokwane. He also owns a company that specialises in cleaning.Last weekend, he went back to his former school to fulfil his wish. He handed over uniforms and certificates to deserving but disadvantaged pupils at the school. He also motivated the pupils to work hard in order to realise their dreams. “I am a product of this school, and during our time things were not as they are today. Massive improvements have taken place here, but the striking similarity with our time is that there are still poor pupils who cannot afford uniforms,” said Makungo. He said the community should not shy away from the reality and pretend they did not notice the web of poverty that entangled pupils in their immediate locality. The principal of the school, Mr Pfuluwani Matsheketsheke, said what Makungo had done was good news for the school. “This shows that our former pupils have not forgotten us and they are willing to do whatever they can to see the situation improved here.” Tshinane Circuit Manager Mr Calvin Neswiswi commended Makungo, saying what he had done was what the government expected from the private sector.

Year-end celebration for Worship Centre It was a moment of joy and happiness when children and caregivers gathered for the year-end celebration at the Praise and Worship Centre for Children at Mpheni Block B2, Elim, last Thursday (6 December). Praise and Worship is an afterschool centre for school-going children from needy families in the village. The centre started on 18 January 2012, and continues to provide lunch for children on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays throughout the school terms. It caters for at least 300 children from Mpheni.
“We decided to relieve hunger for all these children, help them with their homework and encourage them to take their school work seriously,” said caregiver Ms Melta Mudavhi. She added that her love of caring for children developed when she started cooking for pupils at a local school some ten years ago. Humbulani Mutakusi (20) started coming to the centre in May and he says that his time in the centre has been really fruitful. "They encourage us to read and study school books effectively,” said Humbulani. “It is good for youngsters like us to
come together in a place like this. We share ideas about a good life, like staying away from acts of violence and refraining from using alcohol.” Like most centres in the area, Praise and Worship Centre for Children struggles to serve and cater for children with a very limited budget. Main donors are the chairperson, Ms Josephina Thavhiwa, and Mr Phineas Mufamadi, who regularly use money out of their pockets to sustain the project. The centre welcomes help of any nature from the community.

Excellence awards for correctional services The Department of Correctional Services in Thohoyandou held its first management area excellence awards ceremony at the Muofhe Graceland Hotel in Thohoyandou three weeks ago. Among the guests who attended the event were representatives from the Vha-Musanda traditional authority from Tshitereke, Vhufuli and Vondwe, as well as officials of the Department of Health, SAPS and the Traffic College. Ms Lydia Tshivhase from Thohoyandou Correctional Service said that the department acknowledged the solid relationship and the unwavering
support that it was receiving from its stakeholders. The acting area commissioner, Director Mthombeni, outlined the purpose of the day and said they were reflecting “on what we have achieved for the past year”. The traditional authority’s role was recognised in the reconciling of offenders and victims. “Our department has a role to play, especially in the agricultural section for poverty alleviation. Three in court for housebreaking and theft A 31-year-old woman and two men, aged 33 and 27, appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court last week, in connection with a case of housebreaking and theft which allegedly took place at Ravele village, in the Sinthumule area, in August. Mavis Ramapala, Tshifhiwa Tshiovhe and Mpho Melton Madume stand accused of breaking into a residential house, and stealing furniture, utensils, linen and other related items to the value of R50 000. According to the police, Tsh-
iovhe, who is also the complainant’s neighbour, was the first suspect to be linked to the crime. The police report stated that Tshiovhe had since confessed to the police about the theft. Further investigations linked Madume and Ramapala to the case. Madume is from Nzhelele while Ramapala lives in Tshikota. The police’s preliminary investigation revealed that the crime had taken place when Madume came to visit Tshiovhe at Ravele. The two men allegedly planned and committed the crime. After that, they are said to
have called Ramapala who hired a truck to come to ferry all the stolen property to her connections at Ha-Matidza in Nzhelele. Most of the stolen property was later recovered by the Tshilwavhusiku investigating team, who drove all the way to Nzhelele and returned with two bakkies full of furniture and other related household goods. The case was postponed to 24 January next year for trial in the regional court. Ramapala is out on warning, while Madume posted bail of R2 000. Tshiovhe remains in custody.

Shocking results for Grade 9 maths pupils Limpopo’s Grade 9 learners scored a shocking 8.5% average for maths in the 2012 Annual National Assessment (ANA). Subsequently, the DA leader of Limpopo once again called for the provincial MEC for Education to be fired. Education Minister Angie Motshekga released the ANA results on 3 December and said that in Grade 9 mathematics, the average was 13%. In Grade 6 mathematics, the average performance was 27%, three percent lower than in 2011. Provincial performances ranged between 21% and 33%. Tshakhuma derby ends in goalless draw Local pupil receives mayoral recognition The much-talked about SAB League Tshakhuma derby between Tshakhuma FC KK and Maweja Takers FC at the Tshisimani grounds ended in a goalless draw. The game was a balanced affair in the first 20 minutes, but Takers created more scoring opportunities. KK started to demonstrate their rough skills in the middle
of the first half. The Zimbabwean referee, Mr Mbonisi Ndlovu, calmed the situation by reprimanding Tshiwela Ndou with a card. This after Ndou had brutally tackled Khumbudzo Muvhango from behind. The keeper of KK, Thabelo Mmbooi, made his presence felt in the 34th minute. Takers were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Khumbudzo
Muvhango unleashed from the set piece. Mmbooi impressed even the opponents when he braved the hot shot and executed a brilliant save. The captain of KK, Unarine Mukhavhuli, was lucky to go away with a yellow card. He handled the ball intentionally but the referee felt for him as he only flashed a yellow card when everyone thought he would be taking an early shower. Both sides effected some changes to their starting lineup in the last half. Takers enjoyed ball possession throughout the last half, but they were unfortunate. The players and officials of KK confronted the match officials shortly after the final whistle, saying they wanted to lodge a protest. They alleged that Takers had fielded seven over-aged players, two more than the required number. Dynamos still waiting for a victory Dynamos failed to end their winning drought last weekend when they shared the spoils with FC AK. The two teams played to a goalless draw at the Giyani Stadium on Sunday. Sunday’s result leaves the pride of Giyani with only three points accumulated from nine matches. They are languishing at the bottom of the 16-team log. Things are not going according to plan in the camp of Jomo Cos-
mos. They lost another league match last weekend when they were beaten 1-3 by African Warriors at the Johannesburg Stadium. The supporters of Milano United left the Grassy Park Stadium with sore hearts. This after their team caused an upset by losing 1-2 to Blackburn Rovers. Thanda Royal Zulu continued to collect points, when they beat FC Cape Town 2-1 at the Richards Bay Stadium.
In the Mpumalanga derby at the Themba Senamela Stadium in Witbank, Mpumalanga Black Aces emerged victorious at the expense of the home boys, Sivutsa Stars, beating them 1-0. It was a feast of goals when Witbank Spurs crushed Roses United 5-2 at the Ackerville Stadium in Witbank. In the final match of the weekend, Vasco da Gama drew 0-0 with Santos at the Philipi Stadium in Cape Town.

Free State Stars will be in for a big surprise if they underestimate Black Leopards, with whom they will fight for points in their Absa Premiership League match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium tomorrow afternoon. Stars are in a good mood after beating Bloemfontein Celtic, 1-0 last weekend. At the same time, Black Leopards donated points to Mamelodi Sundowns. Leopards’ captain, Mongezi Bobe, has sent a chilling warning to Free State Stars, saying they
would be lucky if they managed to hold the injured Leopards to a draw. The coach of Free Stars, Mr Steve Komphela, said that although Leopards were playing entertaining football these days, they would not allow them to dent their good image. The other Absa Premiership League of the weekend are: Kaizer Chiefs vs the University of Pretoria, Bloemfontein Celtic vs Moroka Swallows, Golden Arrows vs Ajax Cape Town, Supersport United vs Platinum Stars, Chippa United vs Ama-
zulu and Maritzburg United vs Orlando Pirates. The fixtures for next Tuesday (18 December) are: Kaizer Chiefs vs Amazulu and Maritzburg United vs the University of Pretoria. Six matches will be played next Wednesday, 19 December. The fixtures are: Golden Arrows vs Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows vs Platinum Stars, Supersport United vs Ajax Cape Town, Bidvest Wits vs Free State Stars, Bloemfontein Celtic vs Black Leopards and Chippa United vs Mamelodi Sundowns.

3-2 for United
Real Hearts donate points to Defenders
Rospa United, who were trailing 1-2 at one stage, beat Magezi FC 3-2 at the University of Venda Stadium on Saturday. Rospa threatened to score in the ninth minute, but Collins Mandlalati shot wide from close range after a beautiful pass from his captain, Mashudu “Tlolo” Mashapha. The visitors from Polokwane were the first to find the net. In the 26th minute, Mpho Morakalala, unleashed a volley from the left corner. Tthe keeper of United, Tembe Maweni, watched helplessly as the ball hit the back of the net. Rospa United did not lose their original fighting spirit, despite conceding an early goal. They continued to play like a united team, initiating promising moves from behind. They found the Elias Hlabanelo of Rospa United in action after equaliser in the 37th minute. Marks Munyai forced kicking the ball. his way through the defence and blasted in a rocket from inside the penalty box to bring the half-time score to 1-1. Magezi were the first effect change to their starting line-up. They replaced Ezra Mahwai with Edwin Molapo early in the second half. They again took the lead in the 58th minute. They were awarded a penalty after Johannes Manamela was brought down within the box. Mpho Morakalala made no mistake. Collins Mandalati dribbled past three defenders in a row beating the keeper to make it 2-2 in the 74th minute. The home side found the winner in the 84th minute. Their captain, Mashudu Mashapha, beat the keeper Marks Munyai of Rospa (closest to camera) and Moses Karabo of with a ground cutter. Magezi chase the ball.
Gogobole Home Defenders played their hearts out when they beat Midoroni Real Hearts 2-0 in their Limpopo Dairy match at Gogobole on Saturday. Real Hearts was weakened when their diminutive striker, Teddy Thavhiwa, left the pitch with a knee injury in the 27th minute. He was replaced with Lavhelesani Mabudu. The home team played entertaining football throughout the first half, but Eugene Ramusheu, on whom they had pinned their hopes, was unlucky. Ramusheu caused an upset when he miskicked the ball, with the Real Hearts keeper, Zwanga Pharuli, well beaten. Defenders fought back gallantly, even though their midfielder, Fhedzisani Tsakhopa, was cautioned for rough

Local Ramantsha derby ends in an exciting draw The local derby in the Limpopo Dairy League match between Ramantsha FC and Ramantsha Lotavha FC ended in a 3-all draw. The match was played at the Ramantsha grounds on Sunday. Ramantsha would have scored
at least three goals, had it not been for Ricardo Mafhumulele's acrobatic goalkeeping. The new signee of Lotavha, Vusani Mamburu, was a difficult man to mark. He eluded the Ramantsha defence as he kept running from the start of the match.
Ramantsha's keeper, Mangi Mufamadi, played superbly. He denied the opposition several sure chances. Shortly before the break, Merwe Masipa of Ramantsha was red-cared for a second bookable offence. The half-time score was nil-nil. Shumani Ramantswana broke the ice in the 56th minute. Against the run of play, he caught Mafhulele off-guard. The goal acted as a catalyst for Lotavha. It was therefore not surprising that Zwanga Nestianda equalised from Sinky Machaba's pass seven minutes later. Ramantsha tried to use offside traps and nearly paid dearly, as Ramson Magobo and Musundwa Maiwashe took advantage of the situation. The home team scored their second gaol via Mashudu Dikgari in the 60th minute. Mahlatse Sengakana increased the tally moments later, with a blistering shot that beat the Lotavha keeper. Lotavha reduced the margin in the 78th minute via Nwaku Magobo, but Wilson Muedi's goal equalised for Lotavha in the 84th minute.

Unlucky defeat for Leopards Black Leopards could not absorb the pressure and gave away league points to Mamelodi Sundows at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday afternoon. The Brazilians beat Lidoda Duvha 1-0. It was the The Brazillians’ first victory in five matches. Sundowns’ killer striker, Katlego Mphela, who has just recuperated from a long-time injury, was the thorn in the flesh of the defence of Lidoda Duvha. The keeper of Leopards, Ayanda Mtshali, denied the home side numerous sure goals in the first 20 minutes. In the first instance, it was their Zimbawean Nyasha Mushekwi of Mamelodi Sundowns (left) and Siphamandla Sithole international, Nyasha Mshekwi, who of Black Leopards in a tussle for possession of the ball. ©Chris Ricco/ could not believe his eyes after Mtshali BackpagePix. stretched to the limit to execute a brilliant save. Katlego Mphela missed a fortune a little later. He received a beautiful pass from Mshekwi outside the box. Instead of the pass back to Mphela, who Tel: (015) 516 5175/6/7 Fax: (015) 516 1012 returning was in a perfect scoring position, Mshewww.ayobmotors.co.za kwi chose to try his luck by unleashing a volley that made the Leopards keeper, 2009 Jeep Cherokee 3.7L 2010 VW Polo Vivo 1.4 Ayanda Mtshali, perform overtime du38 944km Sport A/T ties. Mtshali palmed the ball out for a 65 608km corner kick. It was in the 34th minute when The Brazillians took the lead. Leopards did not sit back and relax after the Sundowns goal.
