Sinnelose slagting van renosters duur voort Sekuur en sonder om tyd te mors ... ‘n enkele doodskoot elk. Só is ‘n bees- en wildboer van die omgewing se enigste twee renosters die afgelope week afgemaai in die voortslepende sinnelose slagting van renosters in Suid-Afrika. Die boer, mnr. Muller Vermaas, se onthoringde witrenosterkoei en –bul is doodgemaak deur stropers vir die kort stompies wat weer op hul neuse begin uitgroei het. Eintlik het Vermaas drie renosters verloor, want die koei was dragtig en sou in Augustus haar eerste kalf lewer. “Ek wil in my hande huil as ek na hulle karkasse kyk,” het Vermaas Dinsdag gesê. Vermaas boer by Bandelierkop. Die twee renosters het op sy plaas Joppa, wat grens aan die Soekmekaarpad en N1-suid, geloop en was ‘n bekende gesig vir motoriste wat ge reeld dié paaie ry. Talle mense het selfs gestop om foto’s van hierdie statige diere te neem. Vermaas het juis vir die renosters se veiligheid in September 2011 beide onthoring. Oor ‘n maand sou die renosters ook na ‘n ander plaas geskuif word. “Dit maak ‘n mens bitter. Ek sal nie weer renosters koop tot die wetgewing verander nie,” het Vermaas gesê. ‘n Beampte van die Departement Omgewingsake en Natuurbewaring wat op die plaas werk, het Maandag op die renosters se karkasse afgekom. Hy het eerste op die koei afgekom en toe 100 meter verder op die karkas van die bul. Die horings kan hy nie eens by sy eie huis aan hou nie. Om veiligheidsredes word dit by ‘n bank toegesluit. “Ek het R1 miljoen se horings in ‘n bankkluis waarmee ek niks kan doen nie. Die stropers kan egter dit verkoop en maak soos hulle wil, maar ek mag nie. Ons almal wil hê hulle moet die oes van renosterho rings wettig. Dan kan ons die mark oorstroom,” het Vermaas gesê. Volgens hom sal dit die sinnelose slagting onder dié diere verhoed, aangesien die aanvraag na horings dan sal afneem omdat dit nie meer so ‘n lonende bedryf sal wees nie. Intussen het die polisie se forensiese span begin om die twee karkasse te ontleed. Daar word gehoop dat hulle moontlik die koeëls sal vind vir ballistiese toetse. Volgens die Departement van Omgewingsake se jongste syfers is daar sedert die begin van die jaar tot Dinsdag hierdie week reeds 82 renosters in die land doodgemaak vir hulle horings. Dié statistieke was nog nie aangepas om Vermaas se renosters in te sluit nie.

Chantel Lamprecht, is deur die man in die been gewond. Dit blyk dat roof moontlik die man se motief was. Volgens Lamprecht het sy en haar kêrel, mnr. Bennie Landman, omstreeks 23:00 vanaf die Rugbylapa huis toe gestap. Naby die Sparbesigheidskompleks in Songozwistraat het die onbekende skieter skielik uit die donker verskyn en met ‘n vuurwapen op hulle losgebrand. “Ek het ‘n geskreeu ‘n entjie agter ons gehoor en toe ek omdraai, toe word daar op ons geskiet,” het Landman Maandag gesê. ‘n Koeël het Lamprecht in haar regterbeen getref. Lamprecht sterk tans tuis aan, nadat sy Maandag uit die hospitaal ontslaan is. Die koeël is nog steeds in haar been. Sy sê dokters wil eers kyk of dit nodig sal wees om die koeël te verwyder as haar wond gesond is. Intussen het die woordvoerder van die Makhado SAPD, kapt. Maano Sadike, bevestig dat die verdagte nog op vrye voet is. Daar word twee sake van gewapende roof en een saak van poging tot moord ondersoek. In the midst of the national rhino-poaching crisis, police have managed to arrest three suspected rhino poachers on the Nwanedi Game Reserve in the Tshipise area. According to provincial police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto, Nwanedi rangers spotted the suspects carrying a hunting

Parliamentary Committee only now learns of crisis at AFB Makhado The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Defence has been informed about the ongoing power supply crisis at Air Force Base (AFB) Makhado. Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works (DPW) indicated this week that it will take a further three months and some R9 million to fix the problem. A delegation of the Portfolio Committee on Defence visited AFB Makhado on 30 January as part of a routine programme. The purpose of the visit was to investigate the extent of transformation, with specific focus on the training of black combat pilots and associated challenges. The committee then apparently learned for the first time that the base has been without a normal power supply for more than four months now. For the 13 standby generators, which have been in use since October last year, the average expenditure on diesel alone now runs into more than R1,2 million per month. More than 1 000 Braambos residents then had to be assisted by means of a charity project and other means to provide them with fresh food and rations, before mobile generators could be deployed by the air force as an interim measure. The operational area was initially also affected by a complete power failure. Van Heerden confirmed that the DPW in Polokwane was informed immediately. The support measures via SAAF standby generators have been in force ever since, pending further action by the DPW. A media enquiry last year to the Polokwane office of the DPW was referred to the national office. The national department’s communications officer, Thami Mchunu, then acknowledged the enquiry

and replied: “You will be informed if a response is available.” After a reminder this week, the DPW issued a statement on Tuesday, stating that: “Consultants are on site, working on fixing the problem after the preliminary design report, scope of work and cost estimates were received in January.” The statement further reads: “...we envisage the work to take more or less three months at an estimated cost of R9million.” On Tuesday, however, Brig-Genl Van Heerden said he had no knowledge of the presence and activities of such consultants at the base. In the meantime, the continued electricity crisis, together with the reported pending retrenchment of AMG staff and the budget problems in the SANDF, is exacerbating concerns about the overall combat readiness of AFB Makhado.

Doors Le Roux, voorsitter van die Soutpansberg Distrikslandbou-unie (SDLU), het die afgelope week heftig gereageer ten opsigte van die nuut-aangekondigde minimum loon vir plaaswerkers en gesê dat talle boere reeds begin het met afleggings. Die nuwe minimum loon van R105 per dag is op 4 Februarie deur die Minister van Arbeid, me. Mildred Oliphant, aangekondig en sal vanaf 1 Maart in werking tree. Die loonrekening vir groot boerdery met 100 arbeiders styg eweneens dramaties. Volgens Le Roux is hierdie boere se maandelikse rekening ongeveer R147 360. Dit sal egter styg na R223 000 per maand, met ‘n toename van meer as R900 000 per jaar. “Geen onderneming is Vader Kersfees nie. Die vergelyking wat nie deur die agbare kabinetministers verstaan word nie is dat arbeid ‘n kommoditeit is. Dit beteken om jou arbeid vir geld te verkoop moet jy so produktief wees dat jou werkgewer jou arbeid wil gebruik. Die landbou is die plek waar die realiteit tot werkers in die land sal deurdring,” het Le Roux gesê. Vir die verbruiker, meen Le Roux, is die skrif aan die muur. “Die effek sal waarskynlik eerste op die pryse van wintergroente waargeneem word. Dis kontantgewasse met ‘n kort siklus en die effek van voorsieningstekorte as gevolg van die besluit om sekere gewasse nie aan te plant nie word vinnig deur die verbruiker gevoel,” het Le Roux gesê. Hy het bygevoeg dat die aanbod mettertyd behoort te stabiliseer namate produkpryse verhoog. The women´s category of the annual Sout pansberg Mountain Race, a half-marathon, was won by the well-known Jane Mudau of the Nedbank Athletics Club. She completed the grueling race in a time of 1:37.08.

The route was beautiful but the weather was scorchingly hot during this year´s annual Soutpansberg Mountain Race. This halfmarathon, sponsored by the Makhado Municipality and Werda Toyota, was held over the past weekend. In the front is race winner Ludwick Mamabolo. He completed the race in a time of 1:19.20. Behind him are second- and third-place winners Rufus Photo (1:19.23) and Takalani Nkuhumeleni (1:20.17).

‘n Gekombineerde muurbalspan van Makhado (Louis Trichardt) en Mookgopong het die afgelope naweek aan die Bosveld Toernooi in Lephalale deelgeneem en wen te midde van strawwe kompetisie die toernooi. Van links na regs is spanlede Ronel Welman (Makhado/LTT), Gordon Daniels (Mookgopong), Johny Osmond (Mookgopong) en Erik Welman (Makhado/LTT). Byeenkoms sorg vir opwinding

Hierdie groepie is ‘n paar van die topatlete van die Prestige Uit nodigingsbyeenkoms wat Laerskool Louis Trichardt op 9 Februarie aangebied het. Voor, van links na regs, is die vier Triegie aflosatlete wat die SO/8-aflosrekord aan skerwe gehardloop het, Surprise Phasha, Tinashi Ralapela, Ian du Plessis en Lorenzo Nagel. Agter is Nsuku Baloyi (beste baanatleet), Minelise Reynders, wat rekords in die skyfwerp en spiesgooi verbeter het, FC Phillipson (beste veldatleet) en Dembe Ramuhuyu (beste meisiesveldatleet).

Die atletiekbyeenkoms by Laerskool Louis Trichardt op 9 Februarie het opwindende atletiek opgelewer. Die deelnemende skole was Laerskole Louis Trichardt, Soutpansberg, Levubu, Tshikondeni, Drakensig en Ridgeway Independent School. Een van die nommers wat omstanders die asem laat ophou het, was die gewigstoot vir SO/11. Twee seuns het aanvanklik die rekord met 14 cm verbeter, deur albei presies 9.89m te stoot. Dié kranige atlete is FC Phillipson en LJ Fick, albei van Laerskool Louis Trichardt. Nog ‘n Triegie, Franco Knoetze, en Justin hugo van Ridgeway Independent School, het ook aandag getrek. FC het daarop verras deur 10.38m te stoot. Die organiseerders was verheug, maar het nie besef wat nog sou kom nie. FC het met sy heel laaste gooi gewys dat hy eintlik nog net opgewarm het. Met sy sesde poging stoot hy ‘n allemintige 10.71m. Sy prestasie verdien hom 764 punte op die ASAtabel en FC word aangewys as die beste seunsveldatleet van die dag. Die ander drie beste atlete van die dag is ook Triegies. Die beste seunsbaanatleet is Nsuku Baloyi, wat 715 ASA-punte verdien met die 75m hekkies vir SO/12. Nsuku het altesaam vier eersteplekke en een tweedeplek behaal. Dembe Ramuhuyu is die beste meisiesveldatleet, met 817 ASApunte vir die O/11 gewigstootnommer en Matlou Ngwanatladi (O/13) die beste meisiesbaanatleet vir haar 731 ASA-punte in die 200mH. Sewe rekords is opgestel, saam met FC se gewigstootrekord. Minelise Reynders, O/12 Triegie-atleet, het beide die skyfwerp- en spiesgooirekords verbeter.

Haar rekordafstande was 21.6m vir die skyfwerp en 25.7m vir die spiesgooi. Nog ‘n atleet met twee rekords agter haar naam is klein Mixo Nxumalo van Drakensig, wat die DO/9 60m rekord na 9.5s en die 80m na 12.4s verbeter het. Triegie Surprise Phasha verbeter die 60m rekord vir SO/7 na 10.3s. Die vier atlete van Triegies wat die SO/8-aflosrekord aan skerwe gehardloop

het, is Ian du Plessis, Surprise Phasha, Lorenzo Nagel en Tinashi Ralapela. Drakensig se ster-atleet was Mixo Nxumalo, en vir Souties het Phillip Bessang presteer met twee eersteplekke, een tweedeplek en een derdeplek. Die borge van die byeenkoms was die Zoutpansberg Privaathospitaal, Erwee Prokureurs, A2Z Deliveries and Services, Santam, PSG Konsult en Specsavers.

Een van die nommers wat omstanders die asem laat ophou het tydens Laerskool Louis Trichardt se Prestige Uitnodigingsbyeenkoms op 9 Februarie, was die gewigstoot vir seuns onder elf. FC Phillipson (links) verbeter die rekord met .96m na 10.71m, terwyl LJ Fick (regs) ook die rekord verbeter met sy afstand van 9.89m. FC se prestasie verdien 764 punte op die ASA-tabel en hy is aangewys as die beste seunsveldatleet van die dag.
