Hierdie aanbeveling sal dan weer na die DOV verwys

Lots of hopefuls vie for voters’ crosses on 1 November The DA may hope to improve their position at the Makhado Municipality, but this will be no easy task. In 2016, the ANC secured 75% of the votes, the DA collected 11% and the EFF 9%. By Anton van Zyl and Maanda Bele The average age of candidates in the Vhembe District hoping to be elected during the coming municipal elections is surprisingly high, coming in at 43. Quite a few “70-plussers” are also on the list of hopefuls. The lists of candidates in the four Vhembe municipalities as well as the district municipality make for interesting reading. Voters clearly cannot complain about not having options. Whether all the candidates are worthy of a vote is obviously another question. Based on a scan through the lists, 1 555 candidates will vie for positions in the four local municipalities as well as for the Vhembe District Municipality. The major political parties all have a presence, and in the most hotly contested municipality, Collins Chabane, no fewer than 22 parties have submitted names of candidates for proportional representation. The age diversity, however, is interesting. No fewer than six 21-year-olds can be found, with 12 candidates being 70 years or older. The oldest candidate is the 79-year-old Tshinyadzo David Manyatshe, who stands as candidate for the International Revelation Congress (IRC) in Makhado’s Ward 29. Manyatshe is very confident that he will bring about change if he wins this ward, which covers the Tshakhuma area. “My age serves as an advantage. I have been around for long; I know what the people need. I have seen them suffer under the apartheid government and I have also

seen them suffer under the ANC,” he said. He is confident that his age will count in his favour in securing the votes of other senior citizens. “Senior citizens have voted for the ANC because they want grants. That grant does not belong to the ANC, it belongs to the State. Even if we remove the ANC, the grant will remain,” he said. The IRC also has a 21-year-old candidate on its Makhado list. Emmanuel Mahata is hoping to secure the Ward-31 seat, an area that includes Mashau, Thondoni, Valdezia, Mambedi and Mahamu. To him, the biggest challenge is unemployment. “As a youth, I want to help other young people like me. I want to bring service to the people, and people must not look at my age and judge me. I am capable of doing more, as young as I am,” he said. In general, voters have a wide variety of candidates and political parties to choose from. No fewer than 49 independent candidates will also try and secure crosses from voters. The IEC lists unfortunately do not distinguish in terms of gender, which makes judging the number of male and female candidates difficult. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have only submitted the name of one candidate on the proportional representation (PR) list in each of the municipalities. The PR candidates are allocated according to a formula that calculates the total support a political party obtains during the election in each municipality. When the EFF’s Makhado councillor, Anthony Mathumba, was asked about this, he explained that the IEC allowed them to submit only one name for now. After the election results are made available, the EFF will submit more names. The reason for this is to ensure a gender balance, Mathumba said. If, for instance three men were selected as ward councillors, the names of three women would be submitted to serve as PR councillors.

Fierce competition at Collins Chabane Municipality The Collins Chabane municipality, which covers the often-volatile Vuwani District, may turn out to be the place where the ANC will battle most to hold on to their 84% majority obtained during the 2016 elections. No fewer than 489 candidates are vying for votes, which include 15 independent candidates. Starting in alphabetical order, the political parties include the Able Leadership, who submitted names of 56 candidates. Their number one PR candidate is Tinyiko Khosa. The ACDP also believes it will do very well in the Vhembe region. This party has submitted 26 names in Collins Chabane, with Khombo Mabasa being first on the PR list. The ANC has forwarded 87 names, with Miyelani Gladstone Chauke leading the pack. Koto Robert Muthubi is first on the African People’s Convention’s list, while Cope places its hope on Thato Ndobe. The Decent Political Party has selected Hasani Simon Sithole as the number one PR candidate, while the DA backs Samson Muavha. The EFF’s solitary name on the PR list is Dunisani Lyborn Baloyi, while the Gaza Movement for Change backs Vusiwana Mtileni. The Gazankulu Liberation Congress pins its hopes

on Justice Maluleke. Very interesting is that the Inkatha Freedom Party is also contesting this election, with their number one candidate being Ronald Baloyi. The other parties contesting here (with their top PR candidate in brackets) are: International Revelation Congress (Tintswalo Chauke), Katekani Economic Power (Mafemani Hlungwani), Kingdom Covenant Democratic Party (Tintswalo Nkondo), Know Your Neighbour (Nndavheleseni Mudau), Malamulele Community Association (Hermon Sithole), Pan African Congress of Azania (Zodwa Miyambo), Patriotic Alliance (Rodgers Chauke), Rise Up Africa/Tsoga Africa (Mohanoa Rabosiwana) and the Ximoko Party (Mbazima Jackson Manganye).

The Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) does not have wards and is a “catch-all” for the whole region. In 2016, this region had 607 100 registered voters, of which 46,7% cast their votes. The ANC collected 79% of the votes, with the EFF (with 9%) its closest rival. Many analysts believe that the situation will change dramatically this year. The names of 134 candidates appear on the VDM’s list for the municipal elections on 1 November this year.

No landslide victory for one party expected In the other municipalities, the competition promises to be a lot fiercer than in previous elections. In Thulamela, the ANC enjoyed 79% of the support in 2016, with the EFF claiming 10% of the votes. This time around, 425 candidates from 15 parties are standing. A total of 16 independent candidates also hope to secure some of the 41 ward seats. The DA may hope to improve their position at the Makhado Municipality, but this will be no easy task. A further 10 independents hope to secure some of the 38 wards. Musina is one of the smaller municipalities, but even here 137 candidates have thrown their hats into the ring. Van der Merwe, wat aangekla is vir die besit van ‘n onwettige vuurwapen, se saak is van die ander geskei, omdat sy nie met die ander oortredings verbind kon word nie. Haar saak is egter tydelik van die hofrol geskrap om die polisie kans te gee om hulle ondersoek af te handel en omdat die uitslag van die ballistiese toetse wat gedoen is op die vuurwapen wat in haar besit gevind is nog nie ontvang is nie. Indien genoegsame bewyse in haar saak na vore kom, kan dit weer teruggeplaas word op die hofrol. Die twee Duvenhages, Vermeulen, Hibbert, Labuschagne, en Jere se saak het op 4 Oktober weer voorgekom. Tydens hulle hofverskyning is alle klagte teen hulle voorlopig teruggetrek, nadat die hof geweier het om verdere uitstel te gee vir die polisie om hulle ondersoek af te handel. Wanneer die polisieondersoek afgehandel is, sal die saak weer na ‘n Staatsaan klaer verwys word. Al die beskuldigdes in die saak se borg is aan hulle terugbetaal.

Hierdie week, 25 jaar gelede in die

Zoutpansberger

‘n Besluit deur die destydse Groter Louis Trichardt Oorgangsraad om boere te forseer om ‘n heffing op hulle grondwaarde te betaal het hierdie week, 25 jaar gelede, vir baie onmin gesorg. Op die Zoutpansberger van 11 Oktober 1996 se voorblad word berig van ‘n aksiekomitee wat gestig is om die besluit te beveg. Tot in daardie stadium was heffings beperk tot slegs grondeienaars en kleinhoewes binne die dorpsgebied. Die plase wat vroeër daardie jaar by die dorpsgebied ingelyf is, het ingesluit Vondeling, Vygeboomspruit, Rondebosch, Ledig, Nooitgedacht Melkhoutkopjes en Boschkopjes. Die raad se voormalige voorsitter van die uitvoerende komitee, rdl. Solly Noor, het aangevoer dat die heffings deur die nasionale regering voorgeskryf is. ‘n Woordvoerder van die aksiekomitee, mnr. Koeks Terblanche, het egter gesê dat grondeienaars ongelukkig was omdat ekstra heffings gevra is terwyl geen ekstra dienste gelewer is nie. Ander voorbladnuus daardie week was die bootongeluk op die Nzeheleledam waarin bekende plaaslike sakeman en raadslid mnr. Dries “Buffel” du Preez ernstig beseer is. Die boot waarop Du Preez en drie van sy vriende gery het, het buite beheer geraak en in die oewer vasgejaag. Du Preez het sy bewussyn verloor en is inderhaas na die Pietersburg Hospitaal oorgeplaas, waar hy eers ‘n dag later sy bewussyn herwin het. Hy het diep snywonde aan sy bene opgedoen, wat vermoedelik deur die boot se skroef veroorsaak is. Hy was gelukkig om die ongeluk te oorleef. Op ‘n positiewe noot het Laerskool Soutpansberg se skoolkoerantjie, die Soutie Indaba, ‘n derde plek in ‘n nasionale kompetisie vir skoolkoerante behaal. Die koerantjie het ingeskryf vir die landswye Nasionale Pers Junior Rapportryers-kompetisie en teen topskole meegeding. In die afdeling “Beste Laerskoolkoerant” het die Heuwellander Primêre Skool

van Empangeni die eerste plek behaal. Die Roostak, Laerskool Stefanus Roos van Pretoria se skoolkoerant, was tweede, met die Soutie Indaba in die derde plek. ‘n Ander interessante brokkie nuus daardie week was ‘n kort beriggie oor die Wêreld Gesondheidsorganisasie (WGO) wat voorspel het dat kieme hul titel as hoofoorsaak van sterftes wêreldwyd sou afstaan teen die jaar 2020 aan hartsiektes, depressie en motorongelukke. ‘n Nuwe studie het destyds bevind dat tabak binne die volgende 25 jaar 8,4 miljoen mense wêreldwyd sou doodmaak. Wie sou toe kon dink dat almal van ons 25 jaar later met maskers sou rondloop as beskerming teen ‘n virus wat teen hierdie week meer as 4,5 miljoen lewens wêreldwys geëis het? Die voorspelling blyk wel waar te wees oor tabak-verwante sterftes. Volgens die WGO maak direkte tabakgebruik tans net meer as 7 miljoen mense jaarliks dood, terwyl ‘n verdere 1,2 miljoen weens die sekondêre gevolge van tabakgebruik sterf.

Oud-Louis Trichardt inwoners Pieter en Theresa Jooste het ‘n trotse oomblik beleef toe hulle dogter Eileen verlede week haar meestersgraad (MSc) in natuurbewaring aan die Nelson Mandela Universiteit (NMU) se George-kampus met lof verwerf het. Alhoewel Pieter en Theresa deesdae in Upington woon, is Eileen ook welbekend met die Soutpansberg, waar sy in 2013 by Hoërskool Louis Trichardt gematrikuleer het. Ouma Lilian Meintjies, wat steeds op Louis Trichardt bly, is eweneens trots. Eileen het vertel dat sy ná skool ingeskryf het vir ‘n nasionale diploma in natuurbewaring – dit nogal vir iemand wat die minimum tyd buite in die natuur spandeer her. Jy sou haar eerder voor die televisie kry, besig om die National Geographic-kanaal te kyk. Haar besluit om natuurbewaring te studeer was ‘n uitvloeisel van haar liefde vir diere. Nadat sy die nasionale diploma in natuurbewaring by NMU verwerf het, het sy haar voorgraadse studies in 2016 afgesluit met ‘n praktiese jaar. Haar diploma het haar in staat gestel om in te skryf vir ‘n BTech-honneursgraad in haar vakgebied, wat sy in 2017 gedoen het. Ná voltooiing van haar honneursgraad het sy in 2018 begin met haar meestersgraad (MSc) in natuurbewaring. Drie en ‘n half jaar later het Eileen haar meesterstesis ingehandig. Die titel was: A critical exploration of attitudes and knowledge of first-year natural resource management students at Nelson Mandela University,

George Campus. Dit bestaan uit 61 155 woorde, 198 bladsye, 47 bladsye bylaes, 12 bladsye verwysings en nege hoofstukke. It was a big undertaking, and took a lot of time and dedication, but it was definitely worth it, as I wanted to prioritise my marriage,” Donna mentions. Donna and her husband Juan-Ray decided to move to Polokwane earlier this year. “I have continued to grow to love paediatrics over the years and am excited to live out my calling to help the underprivileged,” Donna says.

“I am still busy completing my MMed research, focusing on malnutrition in infants, which I hope to complete next year. It seemed like an impossible task a little over three years ago, but with the support of my family, friends and colleagues cheering me on, and the confidence that this was what I was meant to do, it has ended in success. I am so grateful to God for the grace to bring this journey to completion,” Donna shares.

Well-known Donna Greyling (until recently from Levubu) attended the virtual graduation ceremony last week Thursday for all those specialising in various fields of medicine. She graduated in paediatrics and child health after writing her final paediatrics exam through the College of Medicine of South Africa this year, and now has a Fellowship in the College of Paediatricians (FcPaed (SA)). Donna shared with the Zoutpansberger that she did her MB ChB at the University of Pretoria from 2007-2012. She then worked at Tshilidzini Hospital for her internship and community service. “It was in my community service year that I started to work in paediatrics and fell in love with it. The department was very small at the time, and I was privileged to be a part of expanding and improving the department. I was inspired by the amazing dedication of the paediatricians at Tshilidzini - led by Dr Ravuluvulu,” she says. Donna mentions that she worked in paediatrics at Tshilidzini until 2018, and obtained a master’s degree in public health from the University of Venda, and a diploma in child health while working there. “I then began my training as a paediatrician at Polokwane and Mankweng Hospital, through the University of Limpopo. Limpopo Melkery direk deur na finaal na Vikings-beurt in duie stort Deur Andries van Zyl Die span van Limpopo Melkery het Saterdag, 9 Oktober, vir hulself ‘n plek in die finaal van die Louis Trichardt Krieketklub se 20-beurt liga verseker deur die NTT Toyota Vikings met 42 lopies te klop. Limpopo het ingegaan om eerste te kolf in ‘n kolfbeurt wat ietwat stadig begin het. Openingskolwers Chris-Jan Hendriks en Nimesh Watekar het onderskeidelik 25 lopies van 22 balle en 11 lopies van 8 balle aangeteken voordat hulle paaltjies geval het. AJ Fourie, in op nommer drie, het egter die lopietelling ‘n dramatiese hupstoot gegee met ‘n blitsige 61 lopies van slegs 37 balle af. Dit het ingesluit vyf viere en vier sesse. Ná sy paaltjie geval het vanaf die boulwerk van Waldo van Deemter, het Dewald Joubert (29) en Amir Bux (18) nog bykans 50 lopies op die telbord geplaas, met Limpopo wat hul kolfbeurt

afgesluit het op ‘n telling van 161 lopies vir die verlies van slegs drie paaltjies. Buiten vir Waldo se paaltjie, is die ander twee paaltjies gevat deur die Vikings se Craig Viljoen en Bielie van den Berg. Die NTT Toyota Vikings het vanaf die eerste bal die telling probeer jaag, met openingskolwer Gysbert Guillaume wat 38 lopies van 41 balle aangeteken het, voordat hy uitgevang is vanaf die boulwerk van Salman Patel. Ná sy vertrek het die Vikings se kolfbeurt egter ‘n insinking beleef, met slegs Bielie van den Berg - in op nommer agt - wat daarin kon slaag om dubbelsyfers van 16 lopies aan te teken. Die hele span is in 18,5 beurte uitgeboul met die telling op 119 lopies. Van hierdie 119 lopies was 28 ekstras, danksy die boulwerk van Limpopo. Vir Limpopo het Salman Patel geskitter met die bal. Ronewa brings back bronze medal from Italy By Kaizer Nengovhela Ronewa Mudzanani (24), who joined the South African wheelchair-tennis team at the 2021 BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Alghero, Sardinia, Italy on 27 September, returned with a broad smile and a bronze medal to go with it. Mudzanani, a resident at Vhurivhuri, was born with a disability that deprived him of the use of his legs. This, however, does not stop him from setting goals for himself. He is a workaholic and an indispensable stalwart on the sporting field. Mudzanani is living proof that people with disabilities are also capable of setting dreams and realising them, just like any other person. He started playing wheelchair-tennis in Thohoyandou Technical High School. When the school was introduced to wheelchair-ten-

Na ‘n aanvanklik dringendheid om slaggate in Louis Trichardt se strate te herstel, wil dit lyk of die kontrakteurs wat aangestel is nou bietjie spoed verloor het – of die geld is op. Van die strate wat die meeste “aandag” gekry het was Andersonstraat noord en suid van Songozwistraat. Daar is egter tans baie vra oor waarom die herstelwerk skielik gestop het, veral wat betref die kruising tussen Songozwi- en Andersonstraat. Daar is feitlik geen teerlaag in die kruising oor nie en die slaggate wat motoriste by hierdie besige kruising moet vermy raak net al dieper.

Ná drie dae se spel was dit weereens ‘n besoeker, Johan van Wyk van Harrismith, wat die gesogte trofee bo sy kop gelig het met ‘n telling van 111 individuele Stableford punte. Johan is darem nie ‘n vreemdeling in die omgewing en het in 1992 aan Hoërskool Louis Trichardt gematrikuleer. Die tweede en derde plekke van die toernooi is deur Louis Trichardt spelers Chris Gerber (109) en Roelof Burger (107) opgeraap.
