Suid-Afrikaners

graad in meganiese ingenieurswese.

084 548 5896, Oosthuizen by 083 216 2063 of Pretorius by 082 498 1484.

Hierdie week, 25 jaar

Hulle is so amper R14 000.

Motorists traveling on the N1 north or turning towards Thohoyandou on the R524 have been met with a confusing sight for the past couple of weeks. A huge “no entry” sign was placed at this extremely busy intersection between the N1 and R524 in Louis Trichardt, causing some motorists to wonder where entry was not allowed - the N1 or the R524? In response to a media enquiry, SANRAL stated that the sign had been erected when the R524 was being repaired. “These repairs have been completed and the sign will be removed. The instruction has been issued to the Routine Road Maintenance team to attend to this matter,” SANRAL stated. The sign was removed over the weekend. Deur Pétria de Vaal

Former Thohoyandou prosecutor gets six years in jail for corruption Seven in court for daring armed robbery along N1

Former Thohoyandou prosecutor Leonard Ratshilumela Makhado (50) was convicted and sentenced to six years in prison by the Giyani Specialised Commercial Crime Court on Wednesday, 7 December, after he pleaded guilty to charges of corruption.

Makhado was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team in Limpopo during an undercover operation in May of 2020, after he was accused of receiving a bribe of R6 000 to squash a case of reckless and negligent driving against a minor. He and his co-accused, Mbofholowo Freedom Tshikovhele, then allegedly tried to burn down the house of a key witness in another case in which Makhado is accused of corruption and defeating the ends of justice. In aggravation of the sentence, the state advocate, Evans Lebese, submitted that the country’s economy was bleeding from corrupt activities, and that corruption damaged employees’ morale and organisational reputation and undermined the rule of law. He said the accused had been expected to uphold the rule of the law, but instead acted to the contrary. Lebese argued that Makhado and others who practice this misconduct should be deterred from committing similar offences. The state recommended eight years of direct imprisonment in terms of section 26 (1) a (i) of the prevention and combating of Corruption Activities Act 12 of 2004.

Makhado also faces four counts of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. He and Tshikovhele will appear again together in the Sibasa Regional court on 24 January 2023.

The father of the minor accused of reckless and negligent driving in 2020, Mr Nicholas Netshiomvani, who is also a member of the provincial South African Civic Association (SANCO), said he accepted Makhado’s six-year sentence, but that he was still worried about the corruption in Thohoyandou’s Magistrate’s Court by senior management members.

Court News

The seven suspects arrested in connection with the daring night-time armed robbery at the Total filling station at the Capricorn Toll Plaza on 5 December, which included a senior member of the police’s Crime Intelligence Unit in Louis Trichardt, all made their first court appearance in Louis Trichardt this week.

A group of suspects entered the Bonjour shop on the premises at about 03:00 on that day and held the staff at gunpoint. They fled the scene thereafter with a drop safe containing an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes in a white Toyota bakkie and a Toyota Corolla Quest.

“The police were quick to respond to the incident and a well-coordinated and intelligence-driven operation was conducted, which led to the arrest of the seven suspects at different locations [on Tuesday],” said provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo in a press release after the incident.

The first to be arrested was a female employee of the filling station at her workplace, the 39-year-old Nkhanedzeni Mungomeni.

Further investigation implicated more suspects and a 52-year-old police warrant-officer attached to the police’s Crime Intelligence Unit in Louis Trichardt, Isaac Nemutshenzheni, was apprehended at his work place. The rest of the suspects were arrested at their homes in Shayandima in the Mphephu policing area. They were the 45-year-old Tshifhiwa Mushweu, 49-year-old Tshinanne Netshitakani, 32-yearold Rabelani Makushini, 40-year-old Nqabuko Moyo and 38-year-old Vhahangwele Manyoro.

During the arrest, the police recovered several items that were positively linked to the robbery, including a drop safe containing an undisclosed amount of money, packets of cigarettes of various brands, the Toyota Corolla, and the Toyota Hilux bakkie.

The seven suspects, who have been in custody since their arrest, all made their first court appearance on Monday this week in the court in Louis Trichardt on charges of business robbery and the possession of suspected stolen goods. The case was postponed until Tuesday, 13 December, and again to Thursday, 15 December, when the seven accused are expected to bring a bail application.

Man in hof ná ernstige aanranding tydens jaareindfunksie by hotel

Hofnuus

Sussa was selfs ‘n keurder by optredes op nasionale vlak. Destydse trompoppieleidster Juanette Barnard onthou hoe aansteeklik juf. Ehlers se toewyding was. Haar woorde: ‘Nog net een keer’ sal my altyd bybly. Ek stof gereeld my trompoppiestok af en leer my kinders,” sê Juanette.

Op kultuurvlak was Sussa veral nou betrokke by redenaars en het dit as organiseerder tot ongekende hoogtes geneem. Sy was die organiseerder van Limpopo Provinsie se ATKV-kompetisies vir hoër- en laerskole en was bekend vir haar afrigting en rol as beoordelaar.

Sussa se harde werk is dikwels beloon. Presisie is haar kenmerk.

Environment

On Saturday, 10 December, on World Human Rights Day, Earthlife Africa Johannesburg, together with partner organisations, launched the Mulambwane Eco-Mapping Report. The report raises awareness about the importance of conserving and protecting our natural resources and nature, including heritage and sacred sites in response to the proposed Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone (MMSEZ). The event also highlighted the threats to those who defend the environment, especially remembering those who have lost their lives, in the fight for environmental justice.

“We love our own environment and everything in it, which includes water, wild animals, land for settlement and the places where our forefathers used to live. We do not want money. The MMSEZ is supported by those who want money, even though it will destroy our environment. We have been promised employment, but in the end, community members will fight against each other,” says Khathutshelo Raluare, a member of the Mulambwane community and an eco-mapping participant.

The MMSEZ – which many view as a major ecocide threat – has been anticipated

since the early 2000s, when the local council announced plans to develop Musina from a village into a city. However, opposition to these plans has arisen because this area holds huge cultural significance for the local Venda people, and the affected section of the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve is home to diverse fauna and flora that can only be found in the Baobab Belt.

In the report, representative of the Mulambwane Community Tshiwela Tshihuwa explains the land-claim process of the Mulambwane Community, along with the impact the proposed development has already had. She says: “In 1998, we started the process of a land claim. In 2008 we got the land back and farms that were on our land were given back to us since the land claim became successful that the land belongs to us. Now a SEZ (Special Economic Zone) is planned to happen on our land. The land has been given to MMSEZ and other people, without transparency and consultation with us, even though traditional leaders and their structures do not

have the authority to make decisions on land-use on behalf of the entire affected community.”

According to Tshihuwa, who is also a member of the Mulambwane Women’s Organisation, “Eco-mapping is very important because it helps educate people about all the diverse flora and fauna – like the trees we use for our traditional medicine in Mulambwane – and the role it plays in our cultural traditions. If the MMSEZ comes here, it will pollute our dams and put our people at risk. We will be the ones who suffer.”

The report was written by the Mulambwane community, with the assistance of Dzomo La Mupo and material support from Earthlife Africa. Key to the opposition of the MMSEZ is the poor public-participation process, in addition to the threats to the environment, the land and water sources, including the threat to the culture and heritage of the Mulambwane Community.

She says: “We have many natural resources that should be protected in Mulambwane, like our rivers and mopane trees. MMSEZ coming here will destroy all of them. Our heritage, including the grave sites of our ancestors, our land and dams must be protected. We do not want MMSEZ because it will ruin things for us.” (Issued by Maria Welcome on behalf of Earthlife Africa Johannesburg)

Nandoni will soon provide water to 24 more villages

The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, said that the Nandoni Dam’s pump station would be tested within the next three weeks to determine whether the water pipelines leading to the Nsami Dam in Giyani had been connected correctly to enable the supply of water to the 24 affected villages in the area.

Mchunu was briefing President Cyril Ramaphosa and the media on the progress on the Giyani Bulk Water Supply project on Sunday, 11 December. The president conducted a site visit to the Nandoni Dam to assesses progress made on the project, which is aimed at alleviating water scarcity and ensuring a consistent and reliable water supply in the area.

Ramaphosa was accompanied by Mchunu, Limpopo Premier Chupu Mathabatha and Executive Mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality Dowelani Nenguda. “We cannot, however, provide you with an exact date when these affected areas will be supplied with running water from their taps because there might be unforeseen circumstances that arise, such as strikes by workers, which could delay the water project,” said Mchunu.

The Giyani Bulk Water project was initiated in 2014 to address the severe water challenges in the Greater Giyani Local Municipality by transferring water from the Nandoni Dam to Nsami Dam and the Middle Letaba water system.

Ramaphosa first engaged with traditional leaders and communities living around the Nandoni Dam area to hear from them why they have been without clean running water for so long, while the dam was at full capacity. Afterwards, he proceeded to the community engagement

held at the Giyani Stadium.

Ramaphosa said that the lack of skills by some of the service providers, corruption and wasteful state funds were behind the delays in providing clean water to the affected areas.

“Over R1 billion of the R4 billion set aside for the Giyani Bulk Water Supply project was misused and disappeared, but we are pleased that the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is currently busy with its investigations into the matter. Those found guilty of misusing funds will be held accountable and the consequences shall be imposed. We can promise the affected communities around the Nandoni Dam and Greater Giyani Municipality that, come end of March 2023, they will have clean running water from their taps,” Ramaphosa said.

Mathabatha said he was pleased with the outcome of the engagement between President Ramaphosa and the affected communities regarding the Giyani Bulk Water project. He was also satisfied that the challenges around the project were receiving attention directly from the President’s office and that greater progress has been made.

Thousands of people will once again flock to the Kruger National Park this December. Park authorities have, however, stressed the importance of booking in advance, even for day visitors, to avoid disappointment. Photo supplied.

Even day visitors to KNP can pre-book to avoid delays

To ensure a safe and pleasant stay in the Kruger National Park, South African National Parks (SANParks) is urging visitors to book in advance and to observe the rules of the park over the coming festive season, starting from Thursday, 15 December until Tuesday, 10 January 2023.

Day visitors are reminded that daily quotas will once again apply at the entrance gates and three time slots for pre-bookings are available, which are time slot 1 (05:30 to 07:30), time slot 2 (07:30 to 09:30) and time slot 3 (from 09:30 onwards).

“For busy periods such as the festive season, we aim to better manage the volumes that we expect, as well as our visitors’ expectations. The three different time slots are aimed at improving the spread of vehicles and to prevent unnecessary waiting periods at gates. The day visitor quota (DVQ) for the park is a management tool to prevent overcrowding of the roads and facilities; it is applied throughout the year although we mostly reach carrying capacity during long weekends and school holidays, resulting in our having to turn visitors away,” said the KNP’s spokesperson, Mr Ike Phaahla.

Pre-booked day visitors will get preference over non-booked day visitors at the gate but must ensure that they arrive within their booked time slots. Arriving outside the booked time slot will be regarded as non-booked and therefore will not receive preference and could be turned away. These bookings can be changed as well through SANParks’ reservations offices if need be.

“The park has made plans for increased visibility of both traffic officials and visitor-management personnel to watch speeding, after-hours travelling and general behaviour on the roads. Day visitors are also reminded not to bring liquor with them as the alcohol ban on public areas in the park is a permanent rule which is always enforced. Management is urging visitors to cooperate with officials who will be on duty and to report unbecoming behaviour to the gate officials or call the emergency call centre number on the entry permits,” advised Phaahla.

Visitors are also urged to help keep the park clean by disposing of

their litter at designated areas, not alighting from vehicles in undesignated areas, not speed, and adhere to all rules and regulations as stipulated on the gate permit. Visitors are urged to be courteous and cooperative at sightings to avoid inconveniencing other road users. Please plan your trip carefully, allowing sufficient time to enjoy the bush and to get to your destination. Entrance gate operating hours will be from 05:30 to 18:30 during December and January.

Visitors should also take note of the following important information:

* Visitors will be able to book up to 80% of the DVQ per gate via SANParks’ reservations offices on 012 428 9111 and online at www. sanparks.org.

* Day visitor pre-bookings are subject to a non-refundable booking fee of R50 per adult and R25 per child, which must be paid in advance and is meant to ensure their space because they would have been counted in the number that made the daily quota.

* Day visitors who have prebooked will still be required to pay conservation fees or use a valid Wild Card to enter the Park. The conservation fee for SA residents, as well as Zimbabwean and Mozambiquan nationals (passport required to prove this), is R115 per adult and R57 per child (between ages 2 – 11). For nationals of Eswatini and other SADC countries, the conservation fees are R230 per adult and R115 per child. For all other guests, the standard conservation fees of R460 for adults and R230 for children apply.

* Guests planning to use Wild Cards are requested to ensure membership is valid before arrival and this can best be done online at www.sanparks.org/wild.

* The number and profile of persons (adults and children) on the reservation and actual persons arriving should correspond.

* All guests (drivers and passengers) will be required to identify themselves upon admission (by producing a South African driver’s license, identity document or passport); please ensure you are in possession of one of these documents and have them ready.

* Gate quotas will be applied strictly and guests without pre-bookings could be denied entry if quotas are full.
