MC Mining gets green light for Vele colliery By Isabel Venter
Good news for Limpopo residents is that, after an absence of about five years, a passenger train service will soon be introduced between Johannesburg and Musina. Under the theme To Bring People Together, Shosholoza Meyl announced that they would re-introduced the Johannesburg-Musina-Johannesburg train. The official launch will take place at the end of February at the historic railway station in Louis Trichardt. As part of the re-introduction of the service, commuters can look forward to special introductory offers, starting from R100 per person travelling one-way between Musina and Johannesburg. PRASA was to issue a full press release in this regard this week, but at the time of our going to press, they had yet to officially issue the release. Pictured during a visit by Shosholoza Meyls’ communications and marketing department to Louis Trichardt last week are, in front from left to right, Leonard Potgieter, Nokuzola Mancoba, Daisy Daniel and Ben Makinita. At the back is Ronel Vermaak, customer interface manager Limpopo.
Public resist proposed amendments (Contd from P1) The evaporation from such a dam could be estimated at about 20% per annum. It can, of course rain, but the Nzhelele area is prone to long spells of drought. The population growth in the area has also put a further strain on the limited water resources. Baobab expressed the hope to make up for their water shortfall by means of a deal that CoAL had struck (at the time) with a collective of nine farmers during 2012 to purchase 8% of the water rights that they hold within the
Nzhelele irrigation scheme. One of these farmers who had initially shared in this deal, Mr Peter Nicholson, indicated that this deal had been struck with CoAL and that it has since lapsed as no new contract or deal was made with either MC or Baobab. “South Africa has changed for ever. The laws of this country have changed … you can bring all the licences you want, but if this community does not want you here, you will not mine here … look what happened at Marikana … you will not push this through,” said Nicholson when
MC Mining, previously known as CoaL of Africa Limited, has received all the necessary approvals to restart the Vele colliery. Vele’s original integrated-water-use licence (IWUL) was granted in March 2011 for a period of five years. Later, the company decided to apply for an amendment as a result of planned modifications to Vele’s coal-processing plant. Amendments were required to obtain approval relating to a diversion of a non-perennial stream and associated infrastructural activities. The Department of Water and Sanitation granted the licence on Tuesday. “We welcome this decision and the securing of all the regulatory authorisations for the colliery, said MC Mining CEO David Brown on Tuesday. He is confident that the department’s decision is a
confirmation of the government’s support of MC Mining’s co-existence model. Brown explained that the co-existence model facilitates the co-existence of mining, agriculture and heritage land uses in line with the historic biodiversity offset agreement between the Department of Environmental Affairs, South African National Parks and MC Mining. Mining at Vele is not expected to start immediately. According to MC Mining, the final decision on whether to proceed with the plant modifications at Vele will first be placed before the company’s board for consideration. This will include a re-evaluation of all options available to the company, including an assessment of long-term coal pricing, as well as logistic consideration. “The board will evaluate all options available, which will be communicated at the appropriate time,” said Brown.

CoAL of Africa Limited (now MC Mining) visited the site of their Makhado mine in 2013, shortly after signing a contract with farmers to buy their surplus water from the Nzhelele Dam scheme. During the visit, they flew over the area by helicopter to investigate the course of the different rivers. In the photo, one of the prospecting cuts can be seen, which was dug not far from the Mudemeli community.

Nuwe woef vir tannie Nelia ná slang Goofy eet Deur Isabel Venter
Friends and family were saddened by the sudden passing away of the 19-year-old Noel Rodrigues Culverwell of Louis Trichardt. He passed away on Friday, 2 February, after falling sick earlier in the week. The cause of Noel’s death has yet to be determined. Noel was born on 5 June 1998 in Louis Trichardt. He completed his school career as a student of the Louis Trichardt Primary and High School. After he matriculated, Noel relocated to Pretoria where he managed his own business for a time. Noel moved back to Louis Trichardt at the beginning of the year. “Noel, our beloved son, brother, nephew and friend - thank you for your love and unselfishness … we will miss you forever. Your departure left a big gap in our lives. We will miss your smile, and hugs…” said his family.
Die Zoutpansberger wou by munisipale woordvoerder mnr.

Quranic Verse Does man think that We cannot assemble his bones? Rather, we are able to put together in perfect order his fingertips. Quran: 75: 3-4 Explanation of the verse The Qur’an often reminds us of God’s miraculous power by using simple but relevant examples. Of all the limbs of our body God chose to use the fingertip as an example of how perfectly in order he would bring us back to life, showing that there is something very significant about the fingertip. Today we know that every human being has his own unique fingerprint to such an extent that no two fingerprints are alike. While the Quran is lending credence to its divine authorship, it also reminds us that no one can escape god and our refuge is only in him and not by turning away from him. It is therefore useless to reject his clear signs when we would inevitably return to him. Therefore, we should look forward to the day we meet him and be happy to live in awe and belief in him rather than in anger and rejection of him.” Free Copy of the Translation of Quran available on request. New Venetia Mine GM meets the local media Mining News
The newly appointed general manager of De Beers Venetia Mine, Mr Gerrie Nortjé, said he was committed to the continued development of the mine and the communities in which they operate. Nortjé was addressing members of the media during a breakfast session held at the Venetia Guesthouse in Musina on Monday. The session was meant to introduce Nortjé to members of the media. He replaces Mr Benford Mokoatle, who The newly appointed general manager of De Beers Venetia Mine, Mr Gerrie Nortjé (left) left the mine for greener pastures after serving for photographed with the editor of the Limpopo Mirror, Mr Wikus Lee, during the media breakfast 11 months. session at Musina on Monday. Nortjé is not a novice to the mining industry. He worked as assistant general manager responsible for production for a year at the same mine before his new appointment. He also boasts several years of experience in senior management positions at both the Anglo and Xstrata mining houses. Nortjé said it was important for the mine to develop a good working relationship with members of the media to accelerate community engagement. “The media play a very critical role in community development and as such, we should embrace them as part of our big family at Venetia Mine. We are looking forward to a continued engagement with the media to share information that will improve the lives of our people.” He added that open conversations such as these
assists them to communicate the successes of their social labour plans to their communities easily. “It is through the media that community members should know that we have spent millions of rands to improve services in our labour-sending areas.” He added that he would continue with the mine’s commitment to ‘safety first’ and ‘zero harm’ while, at the same time, consolidating the employer’s obligation of encouraging a good-health lifestyle among all employees. “We care much about our employees because they are the driving force behind our success. These are the people who will help us to achieve our objective of converting our operations from open-pit to underground mining. Let me take this opportunity to inform members of the media that our open-pit mining is expected to continue until 2021 and production in the underground mine is scheduled to commence in 2022 and continue to 2043.” The Zoutpansberger’s sister publication’s editor, Mr Wikus Lee of the Limpopo Mirror, was one of the representatives of the various media houses who attended the media breakfast session. “We take the invitation very seriously, because we regard Venetia Mine as an important content provider in our news room. We will continue to build our already blossoming relationship with various stakeholders, including De Beers Venetia Mine, to improve the lives of our people through development journalism,” Lee said.

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 16 FEBRUARY 2018
Reasons why it’s important to support
L CAL BUSINESSES very selfish statement, saying that the consumer has no rights. Buying and selling is a dynamic process, with various market forces at play. Studies done in the USA and in Canada have A local business that cares about its consumshown that, for every R100 spent at a local ers, will listen to what they have to say. If you business, between R46 and R68 get re-circucan find the product much cheaper online, tell lated in the local economy. 4. KEEP YOUR COMMUNITY SPECIAL Local businesses give a community its unique flavour. Towns across South Africa have similar chain restaurants, grocery and department stores, but that coffee shop down the street where you have breakfast every Saturday morning is one-of-a-kind. The combined presence of your town’s many local businesses makes it different from every other town in the world. By supporting those businesses instead of chains, you ensure that uniqueness is preserved as a part of your community.
Business relationships get built on trust. If you know the people you buy from, you can call on that relationship to ensure that you get a good deal and after-sale service. It’s not just about the price. Consider that when you order a product via the internet and it breaks, you have to wait weeks for it to be returned. You also have to send it back to the supplier and deal with strangers who don’t necessarily trust you. The trust relationship also spills back to the community. Small businesses started their 5. LAB-stelsel gee jong Triegies ‘n voorsprong Deur Isabel Venter

Local farmers urged to report all incidents of Fall Army Worm (FAW) By Silas Nduvheni
The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is thanking the farmers and other stakeholders in the province who are reporting incidents of Fall Army Worm (FAW). The spokesperson for the department, Mr Selby Mokgotho, said FAW was first detected in the province in early 2017 and caused damage primarily in maize, sorghum and about 70 other host species. FAW is an
exotic pest that had its origin in central America and its moths can fly thousands of kilometres in a short period of time and mostly fly according to the direction of the wind. “In this current maize-planting season, farmers and other stakeholders from affected areas started reporting FAW incidences, which were confirmed by local agricultural technicians and monitoring trap catches placed in some of these areas,” said Mokgotho. The areas where the pest occur are Mutale, Matangari,
Thohoyandou, Mashamba, Niani in the Vhembe district, Lulekani, Nwamitwa and Hoedspruit in the Mopani district, Thabazimbi, Bela Bela, Mookgopong, Mokgalakwena in the Waterberg district, Polokwane in the Capricorn district and Groblersdal in the Sekhukhune district He said affected farmers were therefore advised to report FAW incidences to their local agricultural offices immediately for assistance with identification, confirmation and management of the pest.
A local manufacturer of plastic water tanks, Pennells, is currently working hard to help supply in the need for such tanks in the Western Cape. The Western Cape is experiencing one of the worst water crises ever. The demand for tanks to be used as reservoirs has soared. According to Mr Howard Pennells, the local factory will be sending 48 tanks per week to the Western Cape for the next two months.

H
ierdie is ‘n mooi gedeelte oor God se genade.
- 079 516 8303

nother mining company seeing only dollar signs, and when confronted with the real questions that matter, they have no answers! Not any one of the mining companies that have mining plans in the Limpopo Valley has been able to answer one crucial question: Where is the water going to come from? Farmers are battling to survive due to a lack of water and rain in the area. Now mining companies want to take the little we have for their short-term and unsustainable mining ventures! Furthermore, mining licences, water licences and environmental authorization are handed out left, right and centre without anyone considering the cumulative impact of all of these developments on the resources, people, food production and other economic activities in the area. Each application is evaluated in isolation without any consideration for other economic activities or developments in the area. Where are the resource audit and resource-use plan for the region? Where is an integrated development plan for the total development of the

region (not IDPs for individual municipal areas, since they look at the development of a town in isolation)? Have we got any idea how much water is available, how many existing economic activities rely on the limited water resources, and how many communities and people must survive on the little water there is? Is the infrastructure available to service all these developments? The Department of Trade and Industry talks about large-scale industrial development and even a coal-fired power plant for the area. Where are the EIAs? What impact will it have on existing economic activities (tourism and agriculture, food production) and the water resources of the area, not to even talk about the pollution that will result from this?! It is high time that the right questions are being asked and satisfactory answers provided to all these questions and to the future development of the region! The water scarcity in Cape Town will look like a “baby” in comparison to what will happen if the Limpopo Valley runs out of water! With four consecutive years of drought and predictions that matters will get worse in the future, we are a lot closer to a water disaster than what we think! It is time this is taken into consideration by the government and mining companies when they sit
in their air-conditioned, luxury offices and work on plans for the development of the region! You cannot plan from your office desk, you do it at ground level, with the people and with up-to-date and adequate information at your disposal!

Fresh from successful participation at the 2018 Investing in African Mining Indaba that ended last week in Cape Town, the Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) will host a stakeholder engagement and fundraising session with the mining industry in the Sekhukhune District Municipality of Limpopo Province. According to a press release issued by RAL, the event is scheduled for 16 February 2018 at Lapeng Guest Lodge in Burgersfort. “The session is an opportunity which will not only benefit RAL, but mines and communities. It is therefore important that we join hands in ensuring that this and other future relationship-building sessions or events become a success,” said RAL CEO Maselaganye Matji. According to RAL, they are reaping the benefits of its resourceful association with the mining
industry. In 2015, the then new RAL board and executive management of the agency, led by the board’s chairperson, Matome Ralebipi, and CEO Maselaganye Matji, adopted a strategic-partnership approach as part of the successful turnaround strategy for the agency that had just returned from being under administration. “Through this approach, RAL is targeting to create partnerships with the private sector relevant or benefiting from the Limpopo provincial road infrastructure network to help augment its constrained budgetary and financial resources for the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of Limpopo’s roads. This partnership includes both RAL and the private sector co-funding key economically strategic road infrastructure projects in the Limpopo Province,” said RAL. The mining sector, particularly, has been the flagship of this approach. Since adopting this strategic partnership approach, RAL has raised more
than R380 million and continues to secure more partnerships. R100 million is the amount targeted for the current financial year. According to Matji, more than attracting new partners, RAL wants to strengthen its relations with the existing ones, hence their recent participation at the Mining Indaba and these stakeholder-engagement events. At the recent Mining Indaba, the agency engaged and strengthened its relationships with current strategic partners in various projects, among others De Beers, Exarro, Ledjadja Coal and PPC Cement. “RAL has been mandated to manage, control, plan, develop, and maintain the provincial road network on behalf of the Limpopo provincial government. The road asset portfolio of RAL measures in the extent of 20 260 kilometres (km), of which only 5 974 km is tarred and the balance of 14 286km is gravel or dirt roads,” said RAL.

News with an independent soul
rolspelers onderteken is.

Helen takes over reins at KidZart By Isabel Venter
The KidZart School in Louis Trichardt has come under new ownership, that of Mrs Helen van Heerden. Helen, an artist in her own right, recently took over the studio from the previous owner, Mrs Mariza Joubert. Mariza decided to hand over the reins to pursue a teaching career at Louis Trichardt High School. Helen will continue to provide qualitative art education to children aged five to 10 years. KidZart will also continue, like in the past, to work closely with the La Mia Nuvoletta Art Studio. Henceforth the older students (11 years and older)
will be accommodated at La Mia Nuvoletta. “I’m very excited about this new venture. I love to see how children experience pure bliss when they create,” said Helen. She is no stranger to the art world and has some experience in teaching art. Her vision for KidZart is to offer a balance between creativity and educational exchange, and to stimulate children through art processes to discover the world that they live in. She explained the difference between “arts and crafts” and art education. Art education includes the transference of the principles and formal elements of art, such
as line, form, colour, shape and the use of space. During the course of the year, Helen will transfer these skills to students by allowing them to experiment with different media (pencil, charcoal, sculpture work, painting, etc). All this will equip the children with the basis for creative problem solving, develop their perceptual skills, improve their concentration and equip them with career skills for a wide variety of occupations. Art classes will take place from Mondays to Wednesdays. To book a space for your child or for more information, Helen can be contacted at Tel 072 844 6007.

in Pretoria.
Louis Trichardt XI secure win over determined Nkowankowa cricket team Cricket News
Louis Trichardt Cricket Club’s premier league side scored a 31-run victory against the team from Nkowankowa on Sunday. The match was played in Louis Trichardt and the home side batted first. They were off to a good start, thanks to contributions by Nimesh Watekar (19), Leon Olwage (45) and Salauddin Patel (25). Leon Furstenburg added 16 runs, but it was left to Warno Smit to do the damage. He scored a brilliant 56 from just 32 balls. Christo Gerber (21 not out) helped him to take the score to 204/10 after 35 overs. Nkowankowa’s most successful bowler was Chris Mathebula, who took 4/43 in 10 overs. Artwell Mokgoloboto took 2/53 and Thomas Ngwenya took 2/8. Nkowankowa’s batsmen were determined to chase down the score and were off to a good start, thanks to opener Nhlanhla Shikwambana, who scored 51 from 82 balls. He found some support in Lethabo Phakula (12) and Lungi Mhlongo (16),
but the pressure of seeing wickets fall around him seemed to be too much. Thomas Ngwenya (25) and Lordwick Mhlongo (13) put up a good fight, but Louis Trichardt’s bowlers kept applying pressure. The last wicket fell in the 44th over with the score on 173. Gerhardus Fourie was by far the home side’s best bowler. This young speedster took 4/30 in his eight overs. Wouter Smit was not only effective by taking three wickets, but in his six overs he only conceded 11 runs. On Sunday, Louis Trichardt play on their home ground against Hornbill Cricket Club. Nkowankowa will travel to Polokwane to play against Aces.
Life Cycle se hardloopspan, Team Life Runners.
