Mutilated body found Another gruesome murder has shocked the Vhembe district this time in the village of Mbilwi outside Sibasa. Last Friday, the visibly mutilated body of Ms Elinah Mphaphuli (60) was found in a banana plantation. It is believed that she met her tragic end after enjoying some liquor with locals at a nearby spaza shop. Her body was found just behind the spaza shop.
After news of the gruesome find had spread though the village, angry villagers barricaded the streets, protesting against what they said was the senseless murder of an innocent granny. The local Sanco leader, Mr Alson Nndanganeni, said the community was angry about the killing of people by suspected ritual murderers. “We are sick and tired of these killings. There have been four mysterious deaths in

this village and this has left the community gripped by fear, not knowing who will be next. I saw Mphaphuli’s body and it was really shocking. It seemed as if they had used an angle grinder to kill her. Her eyes were gouged out, she did not have lips and her scalp had also been severed. I have never seen such cruelty,” he said. The deceased’s younger sister, Ms Aluwani Mphaphuli, said she had visited her sister last Friday. “We spent some time together. She even cooked food for us and she accompanied me to my home at around 15: 00. At the nearby spaza shop, we met an old man who said he had some liquor at his place. They left together with my sister and, after a while, they came back with a can of beer,” she said. She said another local woman who was there gave her R10 to buy homemade brew, not far from the spaza shop. She said the sister came back with the brew and they indulged in it at the spaza shop. “Around 17: 30, I left with the other people, and that was the last time I saw my sister alive. I later heard she was found dead in the banana plantation just behind the spaza shop. After hearing of the sad news, I rushed to the scene and found that the police and members of the community were already there,” she said. “The police allowed us to identify the body and I could not look straight at it as I was in a state of shock. I later learned, however, that her scalp was bare, she did not have her nose and lips. This makes me believe that she was ritually murdered and I do not have doubts about that. I strongly believe that the people who were with her know what happened to her or had a part in her murder.” The deceased’s daughter-in-law, Ms Takalani Makhwathana, said the murder had been pre-planned. “They waited for me to go to Mpumalanga, where my husband works, and then attacked her. Her death has left a big void in the family as she was the parent figure. I just hope the police will do their job and apprehend the perpetrators and put them behind bars. They have robbed us of a very good person,’ she said. Jail sentence for attempting to steal municipal water pump “Don’t steal our water infrastructure. You won’t get away with it any longer!” was the court’s message upon the conviction of a man who had attempted to steal a municipal water pump. Johnson Zikhale (19) was sentenced to 18 months’ direct imprisonment without the option of a fine by magistrate Marcel Roos in the Louis Trichardt District Court on 9 May. Zikhale was arrested by the police when attempting to steal a water pump on 29 March at a municipal pumping station behind the municipal cemetery. Authorities were alerted to his presence in the pump station by a newly installed alarm system at the pump house. The court took the need of the community for water into consideration. “Week after week, every week in the newspaper there are articles about people complaining … no water, no electricity, no water… The municipality can’t
keep up fixing all the stuff and it is done [theft] by people who are not even contributing towards this community, like yourself … But the community has now suffered. The municipality has now suffered... “So your need for money does not come first in the eyes of the court. This court is here to protect the community ... The court did not even consider a suspended sentence although you are a first offender. This crime is too serious,” magistrate Roos said. Zikhale’s case was postponed several times. At one stage, rumour had it that Zikhale had escaped. The Vhembe District Municipality, as the responsible water authority, and civil rights association AfriForum were pleased to seen him appear in court in person. “Working with AfriForum as a team has resulted in the suspect’s being arrested. This is good work which will cause other thieves out there to

Local AfriForum chairperson Mr Wally Schultz said that the community had suffered enough with water stoppages and shortages that were largely due to the consistent theft and vandalism of water infrastructure. “To date, some R5 million worth of infrastructure, including pumps and cables, has been lost. Before AfriForum got involved, not one single case had been opened … But now that we are so close to solving the water supply problem for good, we needed to ensure that all the good work we and Vhembe have done in restoring water is not destroyed by thugs who steal…,” said Schultz. He praised Lt Col Nemavholo, branch commander of the SAPS Makhado, for her exceptional determination in this case. The euphoria and excitement of the 2014 general election have come and gone. For residents, the national ballot held few surprises. The ANC (African National Congress) is still firmly in the driving seat with 62.15% of the national vote, and the DA (Democratic Alliance) is still the country’s official opposition party with 22.23% of the vote. As for third place on the national ballot, new kid on the block the EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) ruffled a couple of feathers, drawing 6.35% of national voter support and cementing their position as one of the top three political players in the country. The EFF also made a strong showing on the provincial ballot, with the party securing 10.74% of the vote in Limpopo, home of party leader Julius Malema. They finished as runners-up to the ANC, who drew 78.60% of voter support in Limpopo with the DA (6.48%) in third place. The voter turnout for Limpopo was 60.72%. With the results of the national and provincial ballot old news by now, we decided to take a closer look at local voter trends and party support at voting stations in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and Musina during the 2014 general elections. The statistics are for the towns only and do not include voting stations in outside areas. To sum up the elections at a local level, the ANC is still well in control, although the party showed a 1% to 10% decrease in voter support at almost all voting stations. The EFF made the strongest showing, ousting Cope (Congress of the People) as a player at almost all voting stations (the EFF also ousted Cope as the official opposition party in Limpopo). The DA is still in the running, recording a slight increase in voter support at almost all voting stations. Here is a breakdown of the election results at the voting stations in the two towns (in brackets are the voting district numbers):
Makhado (Louis Trichardt)
Makhado Show Hall (76060010) DA 51.12% of the vote, ANC 32.87%, Freedom Front Plus 6.19% and EFF with 5.3%. Both the DA and ANC showed a slight increase. Makhado Comprehensive Secondary School (76060582) ANC 55.08%, EFF 26.35%, DA 13.63%, almost 10% down in voter support from 2009. De-Montfort Catholic School (76060638) The ANC regained its lead at this voting station which it lost in the 2009 election to the DA. The ANC drew 44.23% of the vote. It was, however, still a close race with the DA in second place with 40.46% of the vote. The EFF was third with 9.11%. Masedi Combined School / Tshikota (76060234) Down from their 86.17% in 2009, the ANC still secured 77.25% of the vote. The DA showed good growth with 13.39% voter support (up from their 2.24% in 2009), while the EFF secured 7.26%. Cope, who took second place in 2009 with 7.88%, is now out of the mix at this voting station. Emmanuel Christian Church (76060010) The DA secured a healthy lead, growing their voter support from 49.35% in 2009 to 60.79% in the recent election. The ANC was in second place, about 5% down from 2009 with 25.19%. In third place was the Freedom Front Plus with 6.08% of the votes, just ahead of the EFF with 4.96%. Here also, Cope lost a top spot. Makhado Town Library (76060021) Once again the DA showed a huge growth in voter support, taking the lead with 54.92% of the vote (way up from their 42.98% in 2009). The ANC came in second, down once more from their 39.33% in 2009, with 27.74% voter support. The Freedom

Musina High School (76070033) The ANC secured 81.68% of the vote, down almost 8% from their 89.18% in 2009. The EEF once again succeeded in knocking Cope out of the running for second place, with 9.32% of the vote. The DA took third place with 4.5%, slightly better than their 3.14% in 2009. Lerato Crèche (76070066) The ANC renewed its lead by securing 85.21% of the vote, about 6% down in support from 2009. The EEF came in second with 9.1%, with the DA securing 3.16% of votes. Although they finished third, support from the DA is up from the 1.57% they secured at this voting station in 2009. Musina Show Hall (76070011) It was good news for the DA at this voting station, snatching away victory from the ANC with 50.97% (42.88% in 2009). Support for the ANC at this voting station declined from 57.91% in 2004, to 43.82% in 2009 to 35.49% in 2014. At this voting station, the EFF secured 7.62% for a third place. Renaissance Secondary School (76070088) Here the ANC was still the party of choice, securing 88.07%, albeit down from their 90.97% in 2009. Again the EFF took the 2009 runner-up position away from Cope, rallying 5.93% of the vote. The DA was third-best party with 4.57%, with another slight increase of about 2,5% from 2009. Shanduka Crèche (76070123) The ANC is still in the driving seat after securing 85.55% of the vote (down almost 6% from their 90.97% in 2009). Cope is once again knocked out of the running and replaced by the EFF in second place, with 8.32%. The DA secured 4.05% in third place, up from their 2.61% in 2009. St Martin de Porres Primary School (76070055) Here the biggest loser was the DA. After being the runner-up in 2004 and 2009, and despite a slight increase in support from 2009, they dropped to third place with 4.57% of the vote, having to make way for the EFF (5.26%). Here the ANC is still firmly in control with 88.46%, virtually the same voter percentage as in 2009. Beitbridge Primary (76070022) Here support for the ANC is down from 90.97% in 2009 to 84.11% in 2014, but it was still a comfortable win for the party. The EFF took second place once more with 8.15% at the expense of 2009 runner-up Cope. The DA had to be content with third place with 5.8%, a slight increase of 3% in support from 2009. El-Shadai (76070077) The DA hung on to its lead at this voting station, securing 56.89% of the vote (more than 10% better than in 2009). Support for the ANC dropped from 42.94% in 2009 to 28.51%, making them the runners-up, with the EFF taking third place with 5.14% . Makushu Primary School (76070112) The voters at this voting station gave the ANC a 10% knock from 88.77% in 2009 to 78.8% in 2014. The EFF made a strong showing, securing 10.6%, at the expense of the previous runners-up, Cope. The DA was in third place with 6.45% of the vote – a healthy increase of just more than 4% from 2009. Nancefield Community Hall (76070044) The ANC retained the lead with 82.41% of votes, slightly down from 88.77% in 2009. The EFF made a strong showing with 9.19%, ousting COPE as the runners-up in 2009. The DA got 5.41% of the vote, but this is nearly double their 2.25% in 2009. Rixile Primary School (76070101) Here the ANC took a 10% knock from 2009. Their 78.88%, however, still put them in the lead. The EFF also made its mark at this voting station, securing 10.79% of the vote to take second place. Despite coming third, the DA’s support grew from 3.14% in 2009 to 7.19% in 2014 - more than double what it had before.

As a way of solidifying its communication system, Musina Local Municipality announced the appointment of a new communications officer, Mr Mpho Rathando. The communications manager of the municipality, Mr Wilson Dzebu, says Rathando is a well-suited candidate for the job as he comes with much-needed experience in communications acquired from various mainstream institutions in South Africa. Rathando holds a BA (honours) degree in media studies from the University of the Witwatersrand and is also in possession of a B Tech degree in journalism from Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He is almost done with his master’s degree in journalism with Stellenbosch University. Mpho worked for Univen Radio as a freelance programmes producer during June and December vacations in 2004 and was part of the team of writers for Wits campus newspaper Vuvuzela. He worked as a content development officer at the University of the Witwatersrand’s department of anthropology between 2005 and 2006 and later joined the Wits campus radio station - Voice of Wits FM - as a freelance programmes presenter and producer. Between 2006 and 2007, he was involved in tutoring media studies and African languages at Wits and in January 2008 he joined Government Communication and Information System, where he was responsible for content development. In October 2008, he joined the SABC News in Polokwane as a news reporter. Radio listeners will remember him for presenting Ndevhetsini on Phalaphala FM by then. In November 2010, he joined Parliament as a Hansard reporter, responsible for the production of the official Hansard. Rathando says that he is keen to impart his knowledge to help the municipality achieve its objectives, particularly in relation to its communication system.
A new dawn has settled on the community of Tshikota in Makhado, after a group of strong-willed parents decided to initiate a non-profit organisation (NPO) which caters for the recreational, educational and sporting needs of the local youth. Charlotte’s Tshikota Young Stars focuses on the empowerment and development of previously disadvantaged individuals and assistance of the disadvantaged. “The recognition of abandoned skills among the youth and training and development of the ‘have-nots’ is the main focus to achieve the vision and mission of this organisation,” said the organisation’s managing director, Vho-Shalati Chabalala. According to Chabalala, the organisation was formed to look
into social and educational matters of the youth. She said that the lack of extra-mural activities after school and not having school uniforms contributed to the drop-out rate at school. “As we know, for society to be groomed we need to start developing the children while they are still at a young age,” she said. “The structure is also aimed at safeguarding children from different kinds of abuse.” Charlotte’s was founded by Chabalala, Vho-Aifheli Mamphaga and Vho-Lufuno Rasivhetshele. So far, the founders are using money from their own pockets to fund the projects. “Tshikota is an area full of poverty and lots of criminal activities,” Chabalala said. "Honest citizens are living in fear for their lives and properties. Sadly, that's what has become
of many communities in our country. Some of these crimes are committed by idle youths.” Chabalala also highlighted the problematic issue of teenage pregnancies, HIV and Aids, and unemployment. “All these social ills, if we want our children to live and grow in a sober society, need to be tackled head-on,” she stated. “So we also need to teach our children to accept the little which their parents are able to provide for them.” The organisation ensures that there are enough sporting codes available for the youth. “It’s nice to be a member of the team because we now have a place to go and hang out instead of going and doing crime and smoking,” said Tebogo Msiza, a soccer captain. “We get taught to be responsible kids and go to school every day.”

The career exhibition, the brainchild of The Science Tube, an organization that is motivating pupils to follow careers in the natural sciences, gave the pupils a platform to get information about the different career paths in the field of science. The exhibition targeted pupils from Grade 10 to Grade 12. The pupils were addressed by
the acting Vhembe executive mayor, Cllr Lucy Mulaudzi, who urged them to seriously consider taking careers in the sciences, saying there was a serious skills shortage in the country in those fields. The coordinator of the event, Mr Ronald Ragadza of a Midrand-based organization, The Science Tube, said they had decided on the initiative after realizing that many pupils in the rural areas did not have access to information on careers. “We are here to motivate them. As you can see, most of those involved in the project are
local people who have succeeded, despite their background. It gives the pupils hope that nothing is impossible, no matter what their background might be. We brought in experts who will help these children with all their problems,” he said. He said they hoped that all who attended would benefit. Rofhiwa Marwala (18), a Grade 11 pupil at Bababa Secondary School at Ha Luvhimbi, said she would like study chemical engineering at the University of Cape Town. The executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, urged motorists to keep the rules of the road to avoid more accidents. R3,2m tribal office for Kutama The Department of Public Works launched the construction of a new R3,2 million tribal office building at Kutama on Monday. During a recent previous visit to the area, the Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Thulasi Nxesi, promised the communities within the Kutama area that they would soon receive a new, functional tribal office. During that visit, he was shocked to see the dilapidated office. Members of the community expressed their joy when the Makhado mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, performed the sod-turning ceremony to kickstart the construction of the project officially. "We are overjoyed about the fact
that our problem of travelling long distances to access government services will no longer be necessary,” several remarked. Mutavhatsindi said that the reconfiguration of the Department of Provincial and Local Government into the Department of Cooperative Government and Traditional Affairs signified the importance and the role of traditional leaders in the lives of the people, especially in rural areas. "Government regards traditional leaders as partners in the implementation of its programmes," he said. He also mentioned that about 30 community members will be employed during the building of the new modern office.

One Way Change makes a difference Winter will not be a torment for at least 900 pupils who will benefit from a shoe programme held under the auspices of One Way Change in Vhembe. One Way Change is a Vhembe community development initiative formed by some entertainment practitioners, fashion designers and others to help unfortunate and disadvantaged children. The project is driven by personalities such as Miss Vhembe, Rotondwa Musitha, Phophi Bambelani (PDesigns SA), Uniswa and Mizo Phyll.
“So far, we have visited three primary schools, namely Nndwakhulu in Madombidzha, Matanda and Makungwi in Nzhelele,” said Bambelani. “We believe change can be made by ourselves. We don’t need to always look up to the government to provide for us. The smallest gesture, such as giving a pair of shoes, can change a child’s life as we know education is the key to unlocking doors.” According to Bambelani, the project had so far distributed 350 shoes to three schools and
children on the streets. “We met barefoot children in the streets and we stopped to give them shoes,” she said. One Way Change relies heavily on donations, and raising money through fundraising events (gigs, fashion shows, car-washing events). “Our winter project is where we will be collecting blankets for hospitals and health care facilities and home-based care centres,” Bambelani said. “We are planning many more projects. We are also inviting others to join in this initiative.”

Kutama supports “crime free community” The youth leader and chairperson of Tshikwarani local Khoro, Mr Thomas Madzhie, said that the community supported a crime-free environment and they would do their best to make Kutama a better place to stay, invest and visit. He addressed the youth during a meeting at Kutama on Sunday and discussed the ongoing spate of violent crime in the area. Since the beginning of the year, several people were killed and several cases of public violence and arson were also reported. “Our crime-prevention strategy was constructed around the vision of the police, and we will always be part of the army that strives to eradicate crime," he added. A fitting tribute to Madiba The prolific reggae artist BlackJahman released an album last monh, to massive response from his fans across the country. Mandela Lived, Left and Lives on is a fitting tribute to the late former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, who passed away on 5 December 2013. This album boasts 11 tracks, which are fused with elements of dub. “When I started the musical journey, the first album was titled Freeman, referring to Mandela on his way out of jail to meet his people,” says BlackJahman, the stage name for Witness Ntshangase. “It is therefore great for a South African artist like me to honour this great hero.” BlackJahman adds that it remains indisputable fact that South Africans own the name Madiba (Mandela) before other Africans do. “Africans own this name before the international community does,” he explains. He says it is his hope that this album will help unite all diverse races, cultures, religions, ages, genders and political parties. “The song Mandela said never again, is a unifier as massive audiences proved in Mukula village a fortnight ago, and now here in Makha-

do,” he says. Another track, Madiba’s Ghost, calls for a judgement day for those deviating from the values of humanity such as a better life for all. In relation to this song, the respected musician inquires: “How far are you with the children’s hospitals in all nine provinces? Depriving children education is killing the future.” BlackJahman gets controversial when he asks Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Graca Machel, in the song Tell me more about Mandela, to tell the people more about what the people may not know about Mandela. “The song is a plea to Winnie and Graca to tell us what we do not know,” he tells. “Most people assume to know but the real truth may be farfetched hence Graca and Winnie may know better.” BlackJahman believes that he has a duty to teach the nation in his songs. “I will not keep quiet and pretend not to see the poverty of our people,” he says. “Freedom must be for all; a better life for all as well. I call for equal rights and justice for all. If leaders and all citizens can understand this message, we can be a winning country and continent. One love.”
Cultural group empowers women What started as women meeting at the Mulenzhe Clinic for voluntary work has given birth to a very formidable cultural group. Mulenzhe Clinic Cultural Group, which was started in 2013, is the brainchild of a very traditional nurse at the clinic, Ms Margareth Nangammbi (38). The group has 12 members, drawn from the ranks of unemployed women who did voluntary work at the local clinic. They can do almost all the Venda traditional dances but specialise in the Malende dance. Nangammbi, who is from Lambani, where traditional dancing is one of the most prevalent forms of entertainment, said it started when the women would come to the clinic to help with the cleaning and tending of the vegetable garden at the clinic. “We developed a very close relationship and during break, they would use buckets as drums and would just break into song and start dancing. As someone who understands traditional dancing, after having grown up in such an environment, I could hear that they had talent. That was when I organised a group and we started practising during our spare time. The rest is history,” she said. She said theirs was now more than just a cultural dance group as they supported each other in developing themselves because most of the members were not working. “We perform at most functions in the village and we also perform per invitation at other villages. We also find time to discuss challenges that we come across on a daily basis; those with problems feel free to voice them and
we assist each other. One thing that we have realised is that most of our womenfolk lack financial muscle, which makes them vulnerable to abuse,” she said. She said they were now planning to have their own vegetable garden plot where they would plough and plant vegetables which they could use at their homes and also to sell to generate money for members. “We are going to approach the local traditional leader, Thovhele Jeffrey Ramovha. We know he is keen on development and he will support us. We would like to see women having economic freedom and not having to beg at all times,” added Nangammbi. Eunice Tshiredo (34), a mother of three from Mulenzhe, said being a member of the group had changed her life completely. “I am not working and every day I would just sit down with nothing to do but ever since I joined the group, I am no longer lonely. When I am with other women, we share experiences and now my life is back on track again,” she said. The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, has urged communities to acquire more skills through the Vhembe Skills Development Projects. “Education and skills development are the most powerful tools for tackling the challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality. The government will continue to provide the necessary support in partnerships of this nature to ensure that our people are freed from economic bondage,” he said. He officiated during a recent event at the Makhuvha Stadium during the launch of the Vhembe Skills Development Project and career exhibition. Ndzimande added that his department is particularly concerned about the 3.5 million youths between the ages of 15 and 24 who are not employed, in education or in training. “Those youths are obviously disillusioned and deprived of a purpose in life,” he said. He stated that through the National Skills Fund (NSF), his department had invested R 26.7 million in the Vhembe District Municipality Skills Development Project. Training in several skills had already commenced and beneficiaries are being trained in skills such as plant production, animal production, bricklaying and plastering, financial
management, road construction, welding, pipe fitting, plumbing, mentorship, conflict resolution, communication and negotiations. This project is implemented by the University of Venda, in partnership with the Vhembe District Municipality. “To date, the department has disbursed R10 million to this project of the R 26.6 million committed by the NSF,” he added.

New acting principal for Soutpansberg Primary
During the elections last Wednesday, voters came out in numbers to cast their votes at their local IEC polling stations. Leading by example, the mayor of Makhado municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, cast his vote at his home area in Vuwani.
Soutpansberg Primary School bade their principal of more than two decades farewell and welcomed new acting principal Ms Stienie Fourie. Fourie says that she is building on the foundation that Mr John Whiteley had laid and that she is enjoying her leadership role together with her strong team of educators. Fourie has been acting principal since 1 April this year when Whiteley took an early retirement after 22 years of excellent service to the school and the community. “I believe in participating management, equipping potential leaders and building strong structures for the educators and management,” Fourie said. The educators are currently being equipped with leadership material. The team consists of about 20 educators and three administrative staff members. Concerning the children, Fourie will continue with the good academic standard that the school is known for. Besides the all-important academic aspect, children benefit from active participation in sport, cultural and other extra-mural activities and community projects. Soutpansberg Primary has been declared the best participating school in this year’s CANSA relay and recently enjoyed a visit of the mobile planetarium. Parents can rest assured that the changeover went smoothly and that their
children are well cared for in all respects. Fourie has more than 40 years of experience in education and joined the Souties staff in February last year as deputy principal. She had been deputy principal both at Louis Trichardt Primary (from 2010 to beginning of 2013) and at Tshikwarani Senior Primary School (from 2003 till 2009) and had also lectured at Makhado College of Education for five years.

The chancellor of the University of Venda, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, will confer degrees, diplomas and certificates on more than 1 600 students during a ceremony at the University this week. Yesterday (Thursday) two sessions took place and today two more sessions will be held at the Univen Auditorium.
The rector, Prof Peter Mbati, said that the academic core project as measured in terms of the pass rates, graduation rates and research output had grown dramatically in the past five years. “In the latest research output report from the Department of Higher Education and Training, our publication output per staff member has dramatically grown
from 0.21 to 0.61 units in one year.” He added that the developments were testimony to the rigour that “we as an institution have continued to invest in both our staff and students, ensuring that critical enablers to the academic project, such as infrastructure and appropriate policies, are in place.”

Retired businessman encourages youth to work hard When the history books of names of people who contributed towards the development of the community in Vhembe are opened, the name of Muzondwa Matthews Tshithavhane will feature prominently. Tshithavhane (76), a retired businessman who owned a string of businesses at Muraga village outside Thohoyandou, made history in 1996 when he built a clinic for his community at Muledane. He then surprised his community when he was offered patient fees by his community,
but refused and offered it to the clinic. To show that he is serious about development and education in his community, he singlehandedly built a classroom at Malavuwe, a village where he had lived before. He has also assisted with many community-driven initiatives and at schools. About a month ago, he sponsored an event for the community to celebrate the academic success of his children. They all obtained degrees. Shonisani Tshithavhane (22) has a BCom degree, Mashudu (27)
has a degree in environmental sciences, Lufuno (22) also has a BCom and Tshililo (24) has a BCom honours degree. Two of his children could not attend the function as they are working far from home. Tshithavhane said he would continue to be an inspiration to his community, so that there could be development in the community. Mr Tshililo Tshithavhane, one of the children, who holds degrees from Univen and University of Johannesburg, said his father would remain an inspiration and motivation to them. “It was not smooth sailing. My father is a strict person who taught us to respect all people, irrespective of status. We are very thankful as his children for all the sacrifices he made for us. They were not in vain as we can now go out and fend for ourselves with the education we have,” he said.

On-site inspection of waste disposal site Civil rights organization AfriForum, concerned about the waste management situation in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), conducted an on-site inspection or a landfill audit at the Vondeling Louis Trichardt waste disposal site on 30 April. The scores on the scorecard of the audit will only be revealed once they have been disclosed to the Makhado Municipality, but these would include pressing issues like daily compaction and soil coverage, adequate drainage on site, proper catchment of leachate (polluted water flowing from site) and fires on site. Three licenses pertain: the orig-
inal Vondeling permit, the Vondeling closure and rehabilitation license (2012) and the licence of the new landfill site for which permission had been granted in 2011. “We obtained one of the documents from the municipality and used other forums to obtain the others. We used the license conditions and national regulations to compile an inspection checklist containing important statutory requirements for the landfill site. It is a civil right for every citizen to have a properly managed landfill site that is not harming the environment,” said Mr Morné Mostert, attorney and AfriForum Limpopo organizer. During the site visit conducted by Mostert and the local AfriForum branch chairperson, Mr Wally Schultz, water was seen. “This pool of water is in the very centre of the site, near cracked dry ground, which indicates that it hadn’t rained for days and yet the water had not drained away,”
Schultz said. According to the Vondeling waste disposal site permit conditions, works shall be constructed and maintained on a continuous basis by the permit holder to divert and drain all run-off water. The question may arise whether it is worthwhile to bother with the old landfill site, since a new landfill site is under construction. The Makhado Municipality has said that the planning is for the new site just west of town to be completed by the end of the year. “Just as the current landfill site, as well as its closure and rehabilitation, has to be monitored, the construction and management of the new site will also have to be monitored. The Makhado Municipality has to operate the Vondeling site in accordance with its permit conditions while closure and rehabilitation have not yet commenced,” said Mr Julius Kleynhans, AfriForum’s head of environmental affairs.

Thembisa last Sunday to finish their league programme in the second position on the log. The teams that finished in the second and third position in the National First Division, together with the second-last team in the Absa Premiership Division, will battle it out for a place in the Absa Premiership. Black Leopards finished in second position, with Milano United in third. Milano, Leopards and Baroka FC finished their programme with 50 points each, but Baroka failed to make the grade on goal difference. The opening match between Milano United and the second-last side in the Absa Premiership, Polokwane City, was played at the NNK Rugby Stadium in Cape Town on Wednesday. The result was not yet available at the time of our going to press. Black Leopards will play their first match on Sunday. They will host Milano United at the Giyani Stadium. Their second outing will be against Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium next Wednesday, 21 May. Wednesday, May 28, will see Lidoda Duvha fly to Cape Town, where they will lock horns with Milano United at the NNK Rugby Stadium. Their last fixture will be against Polokwane City at the Giyani Stadium on 1 June. The good news in the Leopards camp is that one of their killer strikers, Rendani Ndou, will be available for selection on Sunday. Ndou and David Zulu missed their team’s previous two matches due to injuries. According to the team’s assistant coach, Mr Joel Masutha, Zulu is likely to be out of action for two months. Apart from the injured David Zulu, their Malawian international, Harry Nyirenda, will also watch the Sunday game from the grandstand. Nyirenda is still serving suspension after seeing red in their match against FC Cape Town three weeks ago.

Referee Chabani excels in national U/19 tournament A local referee, Jelly Alfred Chabani, made his mark at recent the national U/19 tournament in Bloemfontein. He was nominated the best referee of the tournament. Chabani (18) officiated in six matches, including the final. Supersport United beat Ajax Cape Town 4-1 in the final. The diminutive referee was presented with a trophy and gold medal after the tournament in honor of his achievement. The Grade 12 pupil at Shunguwa High School became a referee in 2011. At that stage, he was officiating at matches in the Makhado LFA. It was hard work and dedication that made it possible for him to gain promotion to officiate in the SAB League in the very same year. 2012 saw him gain promotion to officiate in the then Vodacom Promotional League or Safa second division. When asked as to which game was the most difficult one in his refereeing career, Chabani smiled before saying that no game was difficult for him to handle. He singled out the recent final match of the national U/19 tournament between Ajax Cape Town and Superpsort United in
Bloemfontein as the game where he enjoyed officiating the most. When asked about the allegations that referees solicit bribes from club officials, Chabani said that he was aware of the allegations. He reiterated the fact that he has not and will never ask for a bribe from a club official. He revealed that he has declined many offers from club officials who wanted him to fix the results of their matches. “I don’t want to ruin my refereeing career by taking bribes,” he said. He indicated that his aim was to see himself officiating in international matches in three years’ time.
