Radical Golfer breaks radical Guinness record By Jo Robinson

Heinrich du Preez is also known as The Radical Golfer, which is not an unusual moniker for a man of so many talents and the holder of so many world records - Guinness and otherwise. Recently, Heinrich and his friend Gunter Engels passed Louis Trichardt in the dark of the night as part of their recent Guinness World Record-breaking attempt. Heinrich is a philanthropist who dedicates much of his time and prodigious talent to helping those who are less fortunate. In this instance, his aim was to collect as many teddy bears as possible for the Golfing for Teddy project. These bears are then given to children spending their Christmas in hospital. Heinrich set out to beat the current Guinness World Record set by M Venkata K Reddy, M Vanaja, and M V Krishna Reddy in India when they completed the longest journey in a golf cart between 14 and 22 January 2017. The distance that they covered and which Heinrich had to beat was 1665.138km.

With 18 Guinness Book records already under his belt, he rose to the challenge. In order to beat the current record soundly, the aim was to achieve more than 2000km over a period of eight days, using a standard golf cart that was sponsored by Golf Car SA. To make the challenge even more interesting, the two travellers decided that, before setting off every day in the cart, they would play a round of golf at every club where they stayed over. Heinrich and Gunter begun their trip on Sunday, 4 November, at the Serengeti Estates Golf Club in Kempton Park. The clubs for each day, from that day to the end of their challenge on 11 November, when they ended back at the Serengeti Club, were Mbombela Golf Club in Mpumalanga, Hans Merensky Country Club Gold Course in Phalaborwa, Messina Golf Club in Musina, Mogol Club in Lephalale, Lost City Golf Course at Sun City and Goldfields West Golf Club in Carletonville. They beat their aim of 2000km by finishing at 2007km in seven days.

Louis Trichardt residents are fortunate to live closely surrounded by nature. A new business has opened a few minutes’ drive out of town that will interest all lovers of the outdoors, as well as anyone interested in horses and horse-riding, according to owner-operators Sandy and Sheryl James. GG-Horse Riding is based on the farm Vreemdeling, situated on the Witvlag Road some 15km north of Louis Trichardt. Sandy says that they provide horse-riding and other fun outdoor activities in and around the Soutpansberg. She and Sheryl emphasize the therapeutic benefits of horse riding, which is why GG offers much more than their weekly afternoon riding lessons. Sandy says that riding enhances muscle tone and strengthens a person’s core, which makes it physically beneficial. “In addition,” she says, “interaction with horses has a therapeutic effect on children with learn-

ing difficulties, and those who sometimes battle to concentrate for extended periods.” GG also run safaris on horseback in the Soutpansberg, as well as on a game farm near Waterpoort. Sandy says that these safaris can be customized to suit any group or individual client, and can be as simple as an outing, a picnic, or a mountain hike. “Those who are not interested in horse-riding activities are not left out,” she says. “They are able to make a reservation for something like mountain hiking, or an environmentally educational walk through the indigenous vegetation. A great idea for a birthday treat, which is not limited to children only, is to book an outing that includes an outdoor picnic in a scenic spot in the Soutpansberg mountains, for which catering can also be provided.” Many parents struggle to find activities for their children to do during the school holidays, says Sandy. As a solution to this problem, GG Horse-riding also offers specially de-

signed daily programmes for youngsters during school holidays, where transport to and from the venue can also be arranged. The aim of these programmes is to enable the children to have healthy fun, enjoy and appreciate nature and the outdoors, and to get away from technological ties for a while. Sandy was involved in education for about 30 years and is a former school principal. In her studies, one of her major fields was the ecology of botany and zoology. Sheryl has a BA degree in health and social sciences, specializing in psychology. Munisipale “Kersgeskenk” eerder ‘n Kersfeesskok Deur Andries van Zyl

Heelwat oplettende belastingbetalers in die Makhado munisipale area het agtergekom dat hulle vir etlike maande blykbaar nie meer erfbelasting hoef te betaal nie. Hierdie “Kersgeskenk” sal egter vir baie in ‘n Kersfeesskok ontaard, aangesien die munisipaliteit van voorneme is om alle agterstallige belastings terugwerkend oor die feesseisoen te vereffen. Die Zoutpansberger het die afgelope paar weke verskeie klagte ontvang van inwoners wat gesê het hulle kan nie verstaan waarom die Makhado Munisipaliteit opgehou het om erfbelasting te hef op hulle maandelikse munisipale rekening nie? Die koerant het by verdere ondersoek gevind dat dit wel die geval was – sekere inwoners blyk onthef te wees van erf belasting, terwyl andere steeds verplig is om erfbelasting te betaal. Die groot vraag was waarom? Een inwoner, mnr. Nic Hoffmann, het gesê dat hy uit radeloosheid die Makhado Munisipaliteit gekonfronteer het. “’n Beampte het my meegedeel dat

hulle bewus is van die probleem. Op my vraag wat die probleem is, het hy gesê dit het iets te doen met die nuwe waardasie rol wat in Julie geïmplementeer is,” het Hoffmann gesê. Nog ‘n inwoner, mnr. George Janse van Rensburg, het ook gesien hy hoef blykbaar nie meer erfbelasting te betaal nie. “Wat gaan ek doen as hulle dit eendag weer begin hef? Gaan ek die agterstallige erfbelasting alles op een slag moet betaal?” wou Janse van Rensburg weet. Hoffmann het gesê hy dat voorsorg getref het vir so ‘n moontlikheid deur steeds elke maand ‘n geskatte bedrag erfbelasting by te betaal. Die Zoutpansberger het vir die afgelope drie weke probeer om ‘n verduideliking vanuit die Makhado Munisipaliteit te verkry. Die verduideliking sou egter eers hierdie week kom. Munisipale woordvoerder mnr. Louis Bobodi het in antwoord Dinsdag per e-pos erken dat die munisipaliteit tans probleme ondervind met die hef van erfbelasting. “Op sommige rekeninge word erfbelasting gehef en op andere nie,” het Bobodi gesê. Volgens hom is die probleem te danke aan

“tegniese probleme” wat ontstaan het met die invoer van die nuwe waardasierol se inligting op hul rekenaarsisteem. “Nie alle rekeninge is geaffekteer nie, net sekeres,” het Bobodi gesê. Die ooglopende vraag was egter hoe veel rekeninge deur die tegniese fout geraak word? Die Makhado Munisipaliteit kan beslis nie bekostig om enige verdere verlies aan inkomste te ly nie, veral nie gesien in die lig daarvan dat hulle bykans R62 miljoen “verloor” het deur dit by die omstrede VBS Mutual Bank te belê nie. Die Noord Gauteng Hooggeregshof het Dinsdag gelas dat die bank gelikwideer word. In antwoord op die vraag oor die hoe veelheid rekeninge wat geraak word, het Bobodi gesê dat ‘n totaal van 9 472 belastingbetalers tans nie vir erfbelasting aangeslaan word nie. Konserwatief bereken, op ‘n bedrag van R300 erfbelasting per maand, beteken dus dat die Makhado Munisipaliteit tans net meer as R2,8 miljoen per maand aan inkomste verloor. Die finansiële prentjie lyk nog meer beroerd as daar in ag geneem word dat, volgens Bobodi, erfbelasting reeds sedert 30 Junie

vanjaar nie meer op hierdie 9 472 rekeninge gehef word nie. Konserwatief gesproke kyk mens dan na meer as R14 miljoen in verlies aan inkomste. So, wanneer gaan die munisipaliteit die “tegniese fout” regstel en hoe gaan hulle die agterstallige erfbelasting weer verhaal? Die vraag bly steeds: Gaan inwoners kan afbetaal of gaan die agterstallige belasting in een bedrag betaalbaar wees? Volgens Bobodi sal die agterstallige belastings op die November en Desember munisipale rekenings verhaal word. Hy het inwoners daarop gewys dat, aangesien die eiendomme waarop daar tans nie erfbelasting gehef word nie deel is van die algemene

waardasierol, die eiendomme volgens die nuwe erfbelastingskaal belas sal word, terugwerkend vanaf die datum wat die implementering van die nuwe waardasierol op 1 Julie vanjaar. Op ‘n positiewe noot het Bobodi darem gesê dat inwoners toegelaat sal word om reëlings te tref vir die afbetaling van die agterstallige erfbelasting. Bobodi het ook raad gehad aan inwoners, sou die probleem dalk langer vat om uit te sorteer. “My raad aan inwoners is om voorlopig aan te hou betaal aan die bedrag erfbelasting wat op hulle munisipale rekenings verskyn het tot op 30 Junie vanjaar,” het Bobodi gesê.

Ek is ... die Weg, die Waarheid en die lewe Ware geregtigheid is heiligheid “Die nuwe mens … wat na God geskape is in ware geregtigheid en heiligheid” Efesiërs 4:24. aulus beveel die “nuwe mens” om, volgens God se wil, heilig te lewe. Vir die nuwe mens wat in Christus nuut geword het en die Heilige Gees ontvang het, is daar geen hoër ideaal as dit nie. Dit verbind hom met alles wat edel, eg, mooi, waar en soos Jesus is. Die beste bewys dat hy waarlik nuut gemaak is, is sy dors na geregtigheid en waarheid as die bron van versadiging. Dit bevestig wat Jesus gesê het: “Salig is dié wat honger en dors na geregtigheid, want hulle sal versadig word” (Mattheus 5:6). Is jy werklik honger en dors na geregtigheid? As daar geen sterk geestelike aptyt na heelheid en geestelike gesondheid by jou is nie, want dit is die grondbetekenis van die woord “heilig”, kan dit wees dat jy nooit gered is nie. Die versadiging wat Jesus waarborg en aan diegene gee wat honger en dors is na geregtigheid, maak hulle uiters gelukkig en geseënd. Dit het mense verras dat Jesus heiligheid en geluk met mekaar verbind. Almal was gewoond aan dié soort ‘heiligheid’ van die Fariseërs wat niemand gelukkig laat lyk, of gemaak, het nie. Die klem van hulle ‘moenies’ en ‘moets’ en hul baie wette was gerig op die uiterlike. Hulle sou nooit wou erken dat hulle eintlike probleem innerlik was nie, daarom het hulle ook nooit, soos Dawid of Jesaja of soos die tollenaar en baie ander, hulle sonde in die lig van God se heiligheid erken en bely nie. Die Here Jesus het sondaars met baie teerheid ontvang en hulle in heiliges verander, maar die valsheid en voordoen van die Fariseërs het Hy ‘skynheiligheid’ genoem en skerp veroordeel. Is jy waarlik gered? Is jy seker van jou saligheid? Getuig die Heilige Gees saam met jou gees dat jy ‘n kind van God is? (Rom.8:16). - 079 516 8303

n Friday, 2 November, we had our fourth annual SPCA auction, and it truly was a night to be remembered. We were absolutely blown away by our community’s support and generosity once again. It was an evening packed with delicious food, good fun, lots of laughs, fantastic prizes, great people and an unforgettable show by one of the best Afrikaans artists. Thank you to Jak de Priester and his whole team, it was such a pleasure working with you all. Then a huge thank you to Anri Fourie from 139 on Munnik who sponsored their accommodation free of charge! There are so many that we need to thank, especially everyone who sponsored either their time, expertise or product as a prize for our auction list this year. It was quite an exciting line-up and it would not have been possible without our generous businesses and kind community. “Motorfiets-Wessie” (55) in Schweizer Reneke oorlede In Memoriam

Die nuus van die dood van die 55-jarige Wessie van der Westhuizen het vir baie in Louis Trichardt en omstreke die afgelope week as groot skok gekom. Wessie, wat veral bekend was in plaaslike motorfietsgeledere, is Maandag, 5 November, in Schweizer Reneke oorlede. Volgens sy dogter, Ilse, het haar pa se gesondheid die afgelope twee jaar geweldig agteruit gegaan en was hy basies gehospitaliseer. Dit was juis as gevolg van sy gesondheid dat sy broer, Seun, van Schweizer Reneke sedert Junie vanjaar vir hom begin sorg het met die hulp van sy skoonsus Mientjie en suster Annetjie. Wessie was ‘n bekende gesig in Louis Trichardt en het ‘n passie gehad vir motorfietse en derhalwe ook vir jare sy eie motorfietswinkel bedryf. In Januarie 1991 het die noodlot hom getref toe hy, op 28-jarige ouderdom, in ‘n ernstige motorfietsongeluk betrokke was wat hom vir die res van sy lewe in ‘n rolstoel sou laat. Die ongeluk het net buite Louis Trichardt op die Thohoyandou-pad plaasgevind. Wessie het egter gou vir inwoners gewys dat die rolstoel hom geensins sou terughou nie. BO: Die volwasse boomslangmannetjie is duidelik uitkenbaar aan sy heldergroen kleur, groot swart oë en groot growwe skubbe. Links: Vroulike boomslange is bruin van kleur, ook met ‘n groot swart oog, en word dikwels verwar en aangesien vir ‘n swart mamba. Foto’s verskaf.

Hulle is aktiewe jagters en hulle prooi sluit verkleurmannetjies, voëls en voëleiers in. “Wanneer ‘n boomslang vasgekeer word of bedreig voel, sal hy sy keel opblaas om hom groter te laat lyk. Hierdie slang het ook uitstekende sig, onder meer binokulêre visie. My raad is dat wanneer hierdie slang dus aangetref word, kan hy maar net met rus gelaat word. Hy sal self wegbeweeg,” het Jan gesê. Jan het inwoners uitgenooi om hom te skakel by tel. 081 217 9213 vir meer inligting oor die boomslang. Indien iemand ‘n probleem ondervind met ‘n slang op hul erf of in hul huis, kan Jan ook geskakel word, so ook Frikkie Venter by tel. 082 058 7601. “Ons kan ook gekontak word ten opsigte van slangbyte,” het Jan gesê.

Inwoners sal sekerlik bly wees om te hoor dat alhoewel boomslange redelik algemeen in die Soutpansberg voorkom, hulle nie gereeld gesien word nie aangesien hulle arboriale (boom-lewende) slange is. Daar is tog gevalle wanneer hulle op die grond aangetref word wanneer hulle van boom verander. Wêreldwyd het boomslange (Dispholiclus Typus) ‘n reputasie as een van die giftigste slange wat daar is. Ten spyte van hulle reputasie is hulle egter baie interessante slange. “Alhoewel hulle druppel vir druppel die giftigste slang in Afrika is, is byte van hierdie slang baie skaars en gebeur slegs wanneer hierdie slang hanteer word,” het Louis Trichardt slangkenner en -vanger Jan “Slang” van Rooyen gesê. Boomslange is agtertand-slange, wat beteken hul giftande sit ver agter in die bek - gewoonlik onder die oog. “Boomslange het sterk hemotoksiese gif wat veroorsaak dat die bloed nie kan stol nie en in geval van byte kan mens uit alle oop wonde en openinge bloei, soos uit die mond, neus, oë, ore, ensovoorts,” het Jan gesê. Gelukkig, het van Rooyen bygevoeg, vat die gif redelik lank om te werk. “So, daar is genoeg tyd om by ‘n dokter of hospitaal te kom,” het Jan gesê. A local journalist’s name features among the regional winners of the coveted Vodacom Journalist of the Year competition. Ironically enough, it does so among the Western Cape winners and in the Data Journalism category. The Zoutpansberger’s Anton van Zyl formed part of a team of journalists who probed the payouts made by the National Lotteries Commission (NLC). The project has its roots in data aggregation, where large volumes of data get collected and then interpreted. In this case, 16 years of NLC pay-outs to charitable organisations were collected and made available in searchable format. The project allowed journalists in small communities to identify the local projects and investigate these. The original idea was that it would allow the journalists to identify some “good news” stories and write about the projects aimed at uplifting communities. What the project did uncover, though, was large-scale corruption and misuse of funds. It also revealed a culture of secrecy and lack of accountability at the NLC.

In the judges’ citation, they had a lot of praise for the project. “The judges looked to reward journalists who approach data journalism with innovation and energy, but also those who use this form of journalism to help shed light on serious and complicated issues in society. The winning entry combined skilful storytelling, in-depth analysis, deep insight and enterprising journalism to uncover a story with both local and global implications, in the process setting a benchmark for media coverage of allocation of funding of any kind,” said the judges. The entry, entitled ‘Gaming the Lottery’, was described as a stand-out regional winner. The team comprised Roxanne Joseph, Adi Eyal, Siphe Macanda, Anton van Zyl, Raymond Joseph, Jeff Lowenstein, Damien Schlechter, Daniela Lepiz and Khadija Sharife. The team members are from Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, East London, Burkina Faso and from the United States. Anton is the only one from a “rural” area. The regional winners will compete in the national event for the coveted national Vodacom Journalist of the Year awards. The names of the winners will be announced on 29 November in Sandton.

First win for LTT cricket side in Impala league Cricket News

Tovhowani Nefale’s quick-fire 47 runs from 25 balls and Jandré Hancke’s 46 runs from only 26 balls helped the LTT cricket side to beat the Phalaborwa Elephants by 48 runs on Sunday. Louis Trichardt’s team travelled to Phalaborwa for the second series of clashes in the Limpopo Impala Cricket League. The visitors batted first and were off to a reasonable start, thanks to AJ Fourie (13), Nimesh Watekar (33) and Dewald Joubert (37). Leon Olwage (16) and Dirk van der Berg (16) also made useful contributions, but when five wickets were down, the home team believed they were in with a good chance of collecting the points. Louis Trichardt’s “tail” was devastating, and the onslaught started with Tovhowani, who hit five sixes and three fours in his innings. Stoffel du Toit joined him for a while, scoring 27 off 30 balls. Jandré Hancke came in at number ten and, for good measure, added a rapid 46 runs to the total. Vimal Shah (10 not out) was still at the crease when the final wicket fell with the total on 277. Eltivillas played against Nirvana the past weekend and won by four wickets. Nirvana batted first and scored 220 runs. The top scorer for the visitors was Abdul, with 69 runs. Eltivillas then went past the score with six wickets down. Minhaz top-scored with 52 runs.

The Soutpansberg Cycling Club’s annual Jingle Bell Toy Ride on 7 December is less than a month away and this year, even non-cyclists can join in the fun. According to the club’s Stanley Thompson, residents who have decorated their homes with Christmas lights could expect a visit from the cyclists. “All they need to do is tell us their address. We will then divert our cycling route past their homes. The main aim of the ride is to both spread

some Christmas cheer, as well as collect soft toys for less fortunate children,” said Stanley. To take part in the ride, all cyclists have to do is bring along a soft toy as entry fee. “They must also remember to decorate their bikes to bring out the Christmas spirit. The use of Christmas lights is preferable and remember, no helmet, no ride,” said Stanley. With the help of modern technology and volunteers, disabled people can now compete in athletics and other events that they would never have dreamed of a few years ago. Local disabled athletes gathered at Louis Trichardt Primary School on Saturday, 10 November, to be tested and classified to become para-athletes. Para-athletics comprises many more categories than running. The classification of these athletes is very precise, and only a few people are qualified to do this. Louisa Kirsten works as a physiotherapist at Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital and is one of only a few international assessors for the classification of para-athletes. Louisa told the newspaper that making sure that competitors were physically perfectly matched was important to ensure fairness. Once classified, these athletes might be more closely matched than “normal” athletes, who compete on the basis of gender, age or weight. Many things can go wrong with the human body and result in congenital disability, or accidents and injuries can happen after birth, also resulting in loss of limbs or function of some kind. Louisa and Sandy James (local organiser of the day) are ardent supporters of para-athletics and are well along in the process of helping local disabled athletes plan to take part in the many provincial and national events that are available

to them. “Many of us are unaware of the opportunities that exist for the development and promotion of various sporting disciplines for physically challenged or disabled people. Being physically active and involved in a healthy recreational or competitive sport or outdoor activity not only enhances our physical health but also helps to alleviate the stress levels associated with work and other pressures. While many able-bodied citizens find it relatively easy to become involved in a sport at various levels, those who are disabled do not always know where to slot in and become actively involved in sport,” said Sandy. Sandy explained that structures exist in every province in South Africa to make sport accessible to disabled athletes. This was demonstrated at an event held at Louis Trichardt High School in September to create awareness. Spectators came over a little starstruck when visiting blade-runners showed them what they could do. South African Paralympic blade-running superstar Ntando Mahlangu, as well as Daniel du Plessis and Tebogo Mofokeng, ﬂew around the track, proving to amazed and admiring onlookers that having no lower legs can no longer stop anyone from running like the wind. One of the highlights of that day was when little Vhutuhawe Nemutandani (9) was fitted with two prosthetic limbs, thanks to The Jumping Kids programme and sponsorship from the Harcourts Foundation. The change

was remarkable as this little boy suddenly realised that he could not only walk but run and jump. On Saturday, he began his journey of classification and participation towards his end goal of one day competing at the Para-Olympics. Louisa and a co-classifier, Charmaine de Bruyn (who is the chairperson of Disabled Sport in Gauteng), classified athletes from around the entire Vhembe District. Classifiers cannot work alone, and they have to be teams of two or three, all of whom are qualified in physiotherapy or have medical qualifications that enable them to assess impairments correctly. The chairperson of Disabled Sport in Limpopo,

Mr Ernest Netshitanini, was also present to support this drive to get local athletes not only interacting, but also competing. Sandy told the newspaper that a group of local enthusiasts was in the process of launching a satellite IsAbility Club in Louis Trichardt. “IsAbility is an inclusive club, not only for people with disabilities, but for able-bodied athletes as well,” she said. “The aim is to be a contact point where athletes and people with disabilities can become involved and be able to network with the structures that will help them to participate in a sporting code – whether it be for fun or for competition.” The official launch of

the club will take place early in 2019.
