Heat wave leads to tragedy By Kaizer Nengovhela Two young boys from Munzhedzi village, aged 15 and 10, drowned in a stream about 5km from Vleifontein on Thursday. Mbuelo Thovhakale (15) was a Grade 10 pupil at Tshiawelo Secondary School, and Dembe Maliboho (10) was in Grade 4 at Nthabalala Primary. The two and another friend went into the water as it was extremely hot. The two boys then ventured deeper into the water, while their friend was still on the bank of the stream. According to him, he suddenly realised that they were in trouble. He couldn’t rescue them as the water was too deep and very murky. The boy then ran to inform his parents and other

community members and they immediately called the police. When the police and members of the community arrived at the scene, it was already dark and they couln’t locate the bodies of the two boys. Community members and the family slept at the stream until the police divers arrived the following day. When the divers arrived at the scene, they could do little more than retrieve the bodies. Ms Alvinah Thovhakale, mother of Mbuelo, told Limpopo Mirror that she her son was a hard worker and wanted to become a lawyer. “We are grieving for the death of our children, but we were saddened by the fact that their bodies could not be found immediately.” The local traditional leader of Munzhedzi, Mr Simon Rambau,

expressed his condolences to the two families and warned children to avoid playing next to rivers and dams. He called upon all parents to watch out when their children are playing, especially when it is near water. The spokesperson of the Makhado Police, Const Irene Radzilani, said that the police had opened an inquest docket. She also appealed to parents to take care of their children and for children to avoid playing in rivers and dams or to swim without the supervision of older people. She said the police were investigating the drowning incident. The two boys will be buried during a combined funeral at the Nthabalala cemetery tomorrow (Saturday). The funeral will take place at 06:00.

Derrick Mudau (19) drowns in Luvuvhu The Luvuvhu River in the Vuwani area is notoriously known for vicious killer crocodiles and many lives have been lost at the river. In recent years, however, this changed and the river has become a drowning area for swimmers. As the hot summer heat takes its toll, parents and families at Hanesengani in Vuwani who live along the banks of the river are in a state of fear and panic. At one of the spots at the river as many as four people have drowned in recent times. In the most recent incident, a 19-year-old Grade 9 pupil at Tshipakoni Secondary School at Tshino village drowned while swimming and cooling off from the scorching heat. - Continues on p2 Derrick Mudau, who drowned while swimming.

Successful youth conference at Nancefield The bi-annual conference for the youth of the Venda-speaking Reformed Churches in the Vhembe region took place over the weekend of 2 to 5 October in Musina. It was attended by more than 100 young church members from different churches. The venue was the newly built church building of the Reformed Church Musina Nancefield. Members of the congregations of Trans-Letaba, De Hoop, Middle Letaba, Soutpansberg, Musina and Songozwi participated in the event. According to observers, the

conference was hot in more than one way. The region was hit by a heat wave, but the enthusiasm of the young believers attending the conference may have even surpassed the extreme climate conditions. The purpose of the event was to equip young people with Scripture to call other young people to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and become members of his church. A new organising committee was elected, with Br. Samuel Chuene from Musina as chairperson. Musina Nancefield was also

the venue for a conference of sisters of these churches over the weekend of 8 to 10 May. At this occasion, the theme was God’s 10 principles for raising children as given in the first 10 chapters of Proverbs. It was also announced that on 25 October, the new church building of the Reformed Church Musina Nancefield will be officially inaugurated during a combined service with the Afrikaans-speaking congregation in town. During the event, a cornerstone will be unveiled at the new building.

19-year-old drowns in Luvuvhu River From page 1 Derrick Mudau of Tshivhazwaulu was in the company of friends when the incident happened. It took place last Thursday, around midday, when the friends who were swimming noticed that Mudau had disappeared. The spot where he drowned is frequented by pupils during school holidays. News of Mudau’s drowning spread like wildfire, with curious onlookers from Tshivhazwaulu and all the neighbouring villages coming in their numbers. Within a very short space of time, the river bank was swarming with people who arrived at the scene. Divers who were called to search for the body did not take long to locate the body. Mudau’s mother, who was also at the scene, cried uncontrollably after identifying the body as her son. Community leader Alex Ndou, a ward committee member responsible for safety and security and also a member of the Tshivhazwaulu traditional council, said the spot had claimed four lives in recent times. “We are

trying whatever we can to stop children from swimming in that river, but we cannot always be there to guard them. We always talk about water safety in our meetings, but all our efforts seem to be in vain. We are appealing to parents to monitor their children’s movements all the time to avoid such tragedies,” he said. Vuwani police spokesperson W/O Elijah Malatjie, who was also at the scene, said drowning at this time of the year had become a source for concern. “We experience many incidents of drowning at this time of the year and are appealing to parents and the community to guard against children’s going to rivers when it is hot. Students who completed their courses at P&L Hardware’s Further Education and Training College received their certificates during a ceremony held two weeks ago at Mountain Inn hotel. The training was done in partnership with the Wholesale & Retail SETA (W&R SETA). The students were recruited from various communities and received free training after being employed by the company. Eighty students received certificates after completing Level 2 to Level 5 courses. Mr Aubrey Rambau, regional manager of P&L Hardware, said that since 2003 the college had already trained more than 2 000 young people from various communities and offered them jobs. Muofhe’s book, Waiting On Tomorrow, boldly explores difﬁcult themes

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Thousands of fans and followers of the esteemed musician Muofhe Lavine Mulovhedzi would be amazed if any art reviewer made a claim that her singing talent was nothing compared to her writing. This does not suggest that her music is not good, as everyone who has listened to her sounds will attest that, stylistically, she is in a league of her own. Muofhe recently launched her debut novel, Waiting On Tomorrow, at the Thulamela library. Here is a brave young writer who has not only written a good story but also a controversial tale of rape, ruthlessness, confusion, justification, victimisation, hatred, vengeance, repentance and forgiveness. Waiting on Tomorrow is not to be judged by the extent of the coverage it received

in the media and on social networks. People should rather procure a copy of the book from their nearest bookshop and see if they can remain untouched by this woman’s prose, plot and the story as a whole. The book tells the story of a 17-year-old girl, Selomo, who is left pregnant as the result of a rape. “Everyone around her feels the pregnancy must be aborted to wipe away the shame of the rape,” Muofhe says. At some stage, even Selomo thinks it’s a good decision to abort the child. However, her hopes of terminating the pregnancy are dashed when Zeka, the young man who raped, her finds out and demands to be part of the pregnancy. “He seems in love with the idea of having the child,” says Muofhe. “Zeka goes out of his way to convince her that he wants the child and to protect both of them. He tries to show her his

other side. She begins to lose her fear and finds comfort around him. She has to justify keeping her child to her family, who wants it aborted or adopted. No one wants the child to survive, not even the pastor at her church.” The warpath between Selomo’s father and Zeka’s gang begins. On the other side, Zeka’s family has the audacity to visit Selomo’s family. “We are here regarding the matter of our son, Muzikababa. He tells us he plucked a flower in this household,” said one of the men. “In my house?” my father asked, turning red from anger. “Yes,” the man answered. “He says she is with child, a son from the Khuzwayo clan.” “Please, Bagolobaka,” my father pleaded calmly with rage. “Don’t come and insult me in my house. Your son didn’t pluck any flower here. He savagely

assaulted my daughter and now her whole future is ruined. You have some nerve coming to my house and trying to claim a son from us.” From the above text, however painful and dark the tone seems, Muofhe’s strength of a writer is clearly seen in how she puts the words together to render her prose. As a prose writer, she is a force that many writers who came before her would just sit back and look at her with total envy. This novel interrogates societal norms and values which parents instill into children and shed light on the consequences of failure to embrace those values. In this novel, the entire community is in turmoil because of the act of one child – Zeka. Muofhe hopes that, by February next year, her book will have reached all major stores nationwide.

Nyumisa releases debut album

After assisting several groups as backing vocalist, Joseph Bvuma of Nwaxinyamane and his group recently recorded their debut album, Nyumisa na Majika Volume 1. He decided to start a solo career, and while desperately searching for people to assist him to have his music recorded, Bvuma met well-known musician Obed Ngobeni and three little sisters. They then decided to form the group Nyumisa na Majika Sisters. The album comprises eight songs, including Murhi asinwini, Pitori,

Mapuluhweni and ngarili ngarili. Bvuma said he started as a dancer and backing vocalist for several artists and groups around Vhembe. “My music doors were opened when I collaborated with Obed Ngobeni and the group.” Because they have many things in common, it became very easy for them to rehearse and finally release their debut album. Bvuma says the group members come from different villages around the Hlanganani area. “Before recording our album, we performed at funerals, weddings and at com-

munity events to make sure that people were getting used to our music. The bookings were overflowing and it proved that people love our music. Our music is purely vocal, but we also add musical instruments in a few songs.” “I am a full-time musician, but I know that I will have something to depend on whenever I decide to take a break from my music. I therefore encourage young people who want to venture into the music industry to seek an education first. They will also have something to fall back on if their music careers are not doing well.”

Bishop Samuel Tshabuse of Hope of Nations Ministries in Thohoyandou said the recent donation of Bibles to local churches by Reri’s Insurance Brokers was a symbol of great love for the people. “We received the gift of life, which cannot be compared to any other gift,” said Tshabuse. The MD of Reri’s, Mr David Mureri, said that they had invited various churches around the Vhembe region who were in dire need of Bibles in their churches to register with his company. “After some selection, we called them to come and collect the Bibles. We also donate for the education of our children, like we pledge more money for the annual Vhembe district’s Grade 12 excellence awards,” said Mureri. “Department ready for exams” The Department of Education is ready for the final National Certificate Examinations, which will start on 26 October. A spokesperson for the department, Dr Naledzani Rasila, said in discussions with the department’s top management last Monday, it was confirmed that there are 102 633 registered full-time pupils and 16 104 part-time repeat candidates who will be writing the examinations in a total of 1 693 centres across the province.

“On registration of Grade R to 12 learners for 2016, it was reported that the process is still progressing smoothly in all the districts.” According to him, there will be no admission of learners to be administered in schools in the beginning of next year. The department has also started with the procurement of learner/teacher support material for next year. The intention is to start delivering these materials in the coming two months. The Thohoyandou police are appealing to members of the community who might know the whereabouts of Aluwani Mphaphuli (14) of Ha Mphego. She went missing in the morning of 26 September 2015. She was born at Luvhalani in Nzhelele. She started her schooling years at Malema Primary School in Nzhelele. She matriculated at George Mbulaheni Secondary and then studied journalism at a private college in the Tswane Metropole. Being a introvert, she was naturally drawn to creative writing to express her thoughts and perspectives, rather than expressing them openly. Radio represented a wider platform for Ramantswana to express her ideas and she increasingly dreams of asserting herself as a key player in the media industry.

Makhubele clan celebrates its heritage Hundreds of members of the Makhubele clan recently gathered and celebrated culture, heritage and unity at Nwaxinyamani village. This was during the fourth Makhubele Annual Day, which was celebrated under the theme “Never get tired to do good things to others”. Hosi Maria Duvula spoke about the importance of preserving culture and heritage for bringing back the spirit of ubuntu, humility, respect and integrity. Hosi Gezani Ernest Makhubele from Makhubele Traditional Authority, representing all Makhubele traditional leaders and clans, said that it was important that they tell good stories during the event “to change the communities from pre-modernity into post-modernity. We need to tell actionable stories of empowering our communities by giving school uniforms and doing other good works to ensure that we have an educated nation. No one under the Makhubele clan should rest until we change the lives of our people.” The spokesperson for the Makhubele clan, Mr Trinity Makhubele, urged all clans within South Africa to unite and celebrate their origins, culture and heritage because it is important for all people

to know where they come from and where they are going. “It is not difficult to unite a clan as long as there’s commitment, dedication, transparency and accountability in everything people do,” he said. “The secret behind the sustenance of these events are in the loyalty to the Makhubele as a brand and the love of people and willingness to change other people’s lives. We need to play a game of making other people feel very special.” In each annual event, the clan donates school uniforms to needy pupils, plants trees and influences communities in a positive way to love and support needy people and projects. The event was supported by businesses such as Gijas Home Improvement Centre, Rixaka Funerals, Maeteko Funerals, and Mgwena Business Forum. “This is our fourth year of celebration after having started at Makhubele village in Malamulele in 2012, where school uniforms were donated to 30 learners. In 2013, we went to Duvula village, where 35 learners received uniforms, and in 2014 to Mhuntani village in Mokopane, where 35 learners received uniforms,” said Makhubele. Ordinary community members and representatives of community stakeholders from Ward 3 had an opportunity to interact with government leaders during the mayoral imbizo of the Musina Municipality that was recently held at Nancefield Extension 2 open field. The imbizo is a two-way communication system, aimed at improving service delivery and community involvement in the decision-making processes of the municipality. The event was led by Mayor Mihloti Ramoyada, her councillors and senior officials from sector departments and the private sector. Ramoyada presented a service delivery report and future plans of the municipality. She added that the event was testimony that the government of the day was serious about its electorate. According to her, the municipality is doing everything possible to improve the lives of local people. “We are building a gymnasium here in ward 3 at a cost of R2,3 million. For the first time in history, Nancefield community members will have a gymnasium right at their doorstep.” She mentioned that they had spent R2,5 million to rebuild the community hall that was blown away by

More than four hundred stokvel members from different groups from various Spar stores attended a stokvel party at Elim on Saturday. Members were from three Spar stores, namely Elim, Vuwani and Tshakhuma. A number of supplier companies displayed their products at the event, and all the members who attended went home with prizes in the form of groceries and cosmetics. Stokvel members decided to start their own clubs, which would focus on savings, amongst others to buy groceries in December, and to help them to pay tuition fees. Ms Sharon Makhasa from Elim Superpar said that stokvel members are laying a solid foundation which would allow them to achieve success. Stokvels have aspirations to grow their ventures into businesses, and thereby to leave a legacy for their children. “Through the event, we share information on how to achieve these goals. People share their ideas and the lessons they have learnt over the years, with each other,” Makhasa added. She further said that stokvel members need new skills to help them run their stokvels more efficiently. One of the stokvel members from Mpheni, Ms Mulalo Siavhe said that the stokvel is not only about making profit, but also about doing something for disadvantaged communities. ”Our main aim is to build wealth slowly and not to rely on monthly contributions. Saving for groceries is important, but what is essential is building lasting wealth that will sustain our families when we are no longer alive.” Siavhe concluded by saying; “we cannot build this wealth only through monthly contributions. South Africa is full of opportunities and I would like to encourage other stokvels to start doing something, and they do not have to start big, just a small thing will encourage them to try and push forward.” Today the club has 16 members, and they all care about empowerment and growth.

Elderly to participate in Golden Games The MEC for Social Development, Ms Joyce Mashamba, urged communities to support elderly people from Limpopo when they represent the province in the National Golden Games that will take place in the Northern Cape later this month. addressed the athletes during the provincial games at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Wednesday. “Our older persons who are taking part in the various sporting activities improve their health and longevity and use the opportunity to interact with older people of all cultural groups. We call upon young people to follow in their footsteps and emulate our older people in making sure we stay healthy and drug-free,” said MEC Mashamba. Young people urged to participate in all forms of sport Cllr Frank Tshililo of Ward 37 of the Makhado Municipality encouraged young people to participate in sporting codes. He addressed young people during the prize-giving ceremony of a soccer tournament at Makushu a fortnight ago. Tshililo sponsored the tournament. He said he was a proud supporter of local football development and said that Vhembe was rich in talent. He added that he would like to continue to develop a relationship with development teams and provide something tangible that the people would value. He stated that the government could not curb the high rate of unemployment alone. According to the organiser, Mr Tovhowani Mbengwa, the main purpose of the tournament was to unify the young people of Ward 37 and the surrounding areas. The issue of health among the young people also formed part of the programme. “It is in these events where people learn how to organize themselves,” added Mbengwa . Mudimeli Bomo United were crowned as the champions. They went home with R1 500, a trophy and a soccer ball. The runners-up, Chipolopolo, received R900 and a soccer ball. Peace Makers win Matange final Tshakhuma Peace Makers beat Tshakhuma Young Tigers 4-2 in the final of the Matange Brick and Tile U/13 Soccer Tournament at the Tshakhuma Malaria grounds on Saturday. Peace Makers deserved to win from the onset, but they failed to convert their scoring chances. Young Tigers committed suicide by trying to play carpet football, instead of playing aerial balls from behind and making

use of their height advantage. Realizing that his strikers seemed to have left their scoring boots at home, the Peace Makers’ defender, Adivhaho Mulaudzi, abandoned his position on countless occasions to beef up his fumbling forwards. Mpfunzeni Mahafha of Peace Makers was lucky not to see red in the 17th minute. He handled the ball intentionally. Instead of giving him his marching orders, the referee chose to let him go with a mere

verbal warning, much to the surprise of the soccer fans. Peace Makers came close to scoring in the 27th minute. Hulisani Raluswinga received a neat pass from his captain, Adivhaho Mulaudzi, but shot wide from close range. Peace Makers broke the deadlock in the 39th minute. All Blacks emerged the champions after beating their opponents 2-1. For their efforts, All Blacks took home a trophy, R750 cash, gold medals and two soccer balls. Block F FC were consoled by a soccer ball, R450 cash and silver medals. In addition, all teams received R200 for refreshments. Speaking during the tournament, Cllr Ramanala said besides being good for one’s health, sport had the potential to unite the community. “There is no better way of coming together for a good cause than sport. We are meeting today as a community and while here we can think

of something good to improve the living conditions in our areas. We are also happy that many youths participated in the tournament and we have seen that there are many with talent here.” Patson Ramuntshi, who coordinated the tournament, said they were happy with the way things went. “We did achieve our objective of bringing people together and taking the youth off the streets at least for a day. We aim to make this an annual event, but this will depend on businesspeople coming on board and assisting in the logistics of the day,” Ramuntshi added.

Pet owners who wish to board their pets (cats and dogs) at the SPCA’s Louis Trichardt kennels during the December holidays must do so in advance. Bookings can only be made with Mr Lawrence Khodobo between 08:00 and 16:00 and no other bookings will be accepted. “Please do not leave a voice message on any phone and presume your booking has been accepted. It will not be accepted. We also ask that you do not leave a message with one of the kennel staff,” said Mrs Bea Reimer of the local SPCA. All pets, cats and dogs, must be inoculated, de-wormed and bathed or dipped before coming into the kennels. “We will need proof of yearly inoculations, as well as rabies inoculation when

you bring your pet in,” said Reimer. Inoculation must take place 10 days before the pet is brought to the kennels. Reimer and Khodobo must also be made aware of pets on medication while these are at the kennels. “If you intend leaving your pets at home during the holiday, please make adequate arrangements with a reliable person for them. Remember, there will be fireworks while you are away, so be prepared,” Reimer warned. The boarding fees are R40 per dog per day and R30 per cat per day. Office hours at the kennels are Monday to Friday from 08:00 until 17:00 and Saturdays from 08:00 until 13:00. The kennels are closed on Sundays and public holidays. People bringing their pets

must do so within business hours. Pets left at the kennels over the weekend must be picked up on Monday, unless arrangements are made before the time. The SPCA remain reliant on donations to keep their doors open. R100 000 to develop chess at schools Prize money amounting to R100 000 was distributed to primary and secondary schools during the prize-giving ceremony of the Munei Foundation Chess competition, which was held at the Tshiozwi Sivhada Guest House last Friday night. The guest speaker, the chairperson for housing development enterprise of Namibia, Mr Sam Chivute, emphasised the importance of education during the ceremony and said that sport without education meant nothing. “You can be a star today and be written off the following day. Education will never forsake you, and you can bank on it,” he added. Tshakhuma Peace Makers the Matange champions Tshakhuma Peace Makers U/13 Football Club were crowned the champions of the Matange Brick and Tile Soccer Tournament at the Tshakhuma Malaria grounds last Saturday. This after they beat Tshakhuma Young Tigers 4-2 in the final. Peace Makers were presented with a brand new soccer kit during a ceremony that was held at the grounds shortly after the final. During the ceremony, the managing director of the company, Mr RR Matshepete, revealed that this year’s sponsorship was the starting point of the relationship that will last for years to come. He stated that the sponsorship would increase every year, saying next season’s champions would take home a floating trophy, soccer kit and 11 pairs of soccer boots. Matshepete further stated that, as a parent himself, it was his wish to see all children having a bright future. He appealed to the children to strike a balance between education and sports. Matshepete also indicated that he was impressed by the performance of one of the players for the teams that took part in the losers’ final, Shooting Stars. The 10-year old Livhuwani Ndou, who was wearing the captain’s arm band, was a thorn in the flesh of the opponents, TNN Academy. Matshepete stated that he would adopt the young player for the rest of his football career. The runners-up, Young Tigers, were presented with a cash prize of R500. Shooting Stars took home R350 while TNN Academy went home with a consolation prize of R150. During the ceremony, a local ward councilor, Cllr TA Mmbadi, appealed to other businessmen to start sponsoring development teams. Leopards to face NFD rookies Black Leopards and Mbombela United will face each other at the Thohoyandou Stadium in a National First Division League match. A quick glance at Leopards’ track record shows that United will be lucky if they manage to hold Lidoda Duvha to a draw. United have won only two of the six league matches they have played to date. They lost two and shared the spoils on two occasions. On the other hand, the Thohoyandou outfit are sharpened to kill of late. They collected four points in their last two matches, beating FC Cape Town at home and sharing the glory with Baroka FC away from home.
