So, ‘n ou wat vandag begin goeie bulle gebruik gaan my nooit vang nie, want ek gaan hom altyd voorbly.

Foto verskaf. in hierdie moeilike tyd.

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 16 OCTOBER 2020

As ‘n waarde-gedrewe skool het me. Irene
After hulle staan Charlotte, Tony en Jade Burchell.

The draw for the winner in the CheckU WinaTV competition took place on Monday and the 50” LED television was won by Ms Patience Simali. Here she is being congratulated by a staff member of CheckU in Louis Trichardt, Mr Makoma Matodzi.
Help om hul jaar spesiaal te maak A new fastfood franchise, Mochachos, opened in the Makhado Grove centre in Songozwi Street, next to Checkers. The Mochachos brand first appeared in South Africa in 1994. This store was one of the first outlets in South Africa to offer Mexican dishes. The food outlets quickly became popular and today, Mochachos franchises can also be found in Botswana, Zambia, Mauritius and Australia. The Mochachos Chicken Villages concept is based on “MexicanFlavoured, FlameGrilled Chicken”, combined with a specialised Mexican Foods menu. The brand’s core product is flamegrilled Mexican Spiced Chicken, but the flavoursome chicken burgers are quite a hit in South Africa. The menu also involves a range of delicious and nutritious burgers, schwarmas and various Mexican meals, including the Buritto, Fajita and Chimichangas. According to the local store manager, Thendo Magadani, they were pleasantly surprised by the response of the local market. Local businesses quickly responded and ordered food for staff and for functions. On Monday, the friendly staff of the local outlet posed for a quick photo. Left: Ms Mavis Mbuvha from Makwarela is the lucky winner in the CTM WinaBakkie competi tion. The names of customers who bought goods worth more than R5 000 (which included a PRO GRIP product) from CTM were entered into the draw. Ms Mbuvha won a new Ford Ranger to the value of R356 000. In the photo are, from left to right, Chris Ralufhe (store manager at Thohoyandou CTM), Ms Mavis Mbuvha (win ner), Mashudu Nemagavhani (inhouse auditor from CTM’s head office) and Pastor Livingstone Simango (director of CTM). The official handing over was held last Saturday at Thohoyandou. Photo supplied.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN JC Krogh - The maker of peace?
S
By Anton van Zyl
ooner or later we had to get to Krogh Street, which is, after all, the “main” street in town. It used to be the route to the north, leading through Louis Trichardt and passing the important shops, the banks and the post office. Whether Johannes Christoffel Krogh ever visited the town is not certain, but it is very likely. At one stage in his career (in 1904) he was the magistrate for the Waterberg district and he also had several family ties with local Boer families. JC Krogh’s most notable achievement, as far as historians are concerned, is that he was one of the signatories to the Vereeniging Peace Treaty that marked the end of the Anglo Boer War in 1902. Along with Louis Botha, FW Reitz, JH de la Rey, SW Burger and LJ Meyer, he represented the ZAR during the negotiations. The Krogh family is of Danish origin and first arrived on local shores in 1794 when a young surgeon, Johannes Christoffel Krogh, accompanied his uncle, Dr Zoomers, on a trip to southern
Africa. He seemed to have liked the new country and in 1803 married Hester, the daughter of Petrus Ignatius Maré. This was also a quick introduction to the Voortrekker leaders, as his wife’s uncle was married to Johanna Magdalena Pretorius, sister of the well-known Commandant-General Andries Pretorius. The subject of our story, Johannes Christoffel (jr), was born on 6 September 1846 in Somerset East. He went to school in Uitenhage and later studied at the South African College in Cape Town. When he was only 23 years old he moved to the newly established town of Pretoria to start his career in the government services as a clerk. Four years later, in 1873, he married Maria Meintjies. In March 1877, the then president of the ZAR, TF Burgers, appointed him as public prosecutor for the Pretoria district. In the same year, T Shepstone marched into Pretoria to annex it for the British government. In August 1877, the “Secretary to the Government”, Mr M Osborn, writes a letter to Krogh to “appoint you, without

In this week’s story we go for the “main artery” of the town: Krogh Street. As has become customary, we deviate and we also look at the role the street itself played in the past hundred years. A special word of thanks to the Hugh Exton Photographic Museum in Polokwane. This museum, managed by the Polokwane Municipality, houses over 23 000 negatives and original photographs. Many of the photos were taken by the legendary photographer, Hugh Exton, who lived to be 91 years old. The collection also includes photos taken in the Soutpansberg district between 1892 and 1945. When we asked the museum staff for some photos they responded very quickly and sent us a couple of absolutely amazing prints. A history series such as this one relies on the goodwill and assistance of private collectors and museums. The various municipalities also play an important role in this regard. Some of the municipalities are terrible when it comes to preserving history and also at making it accessible to residents. It is thus such a delight dealing with the Polokwane Municipality and their very competent staff. If you have some old photos of the region, please tell us about these. These are all memories that were once captured by an individual. Dozens of years later we can all still enjoy and appreciate these memories (if you make them available). Please send contributions, Krogh Street questions and even criticism (if you must) to anton@ zoutnet.co.za.
salary, to act as Registrar of the HIGH Court of Pretoria during the absence of Mr. Haggard on Circuit.” Krogh became magistrate in the Pretoria court in May 1878, following the resignation of William Skinner. He served in this position for more than three years, before being appointed magistrate of Wakkerstroom in August 1881. He stayed in this district for almost 14 years, after which he was appointed as the “Special Commissaris” (Special Commissioner) of Swaziland. One of his first tasks was to help demarcate the border between the ZAR and Swaziland. The beacon north of the Mbuluzi River is still called “Krogh’s Beacon”. When the Anglo Boer War broke out in 1899, his knowledge of the country, especially Swaziland and the adjacent areas, became very useful. On 23 August 1901, while still in the field, JC Krogh was elected to the executive council of the ZAR. It was also in this capacity that he participated in the negotiations to end the threeyear-long war. Interestingly enough his signature on the peace treaty had the title “Vrederegter der ZAR” (Peace Officer of the ZAR) below it.
After the war, Krogh was appointed as magistrate in Lichtenburg and in 1904 he became magistrate in the Waterberg district. When the Union of South Africa was formed in 1910, Krogh became a senator and moved to Cape Town. He died on May 5, 1921. The story of Krogh may have ended here, but that’s not the way life works. People often “live on” through the legacy of their children, and in this case perhaps the grandchildren. JC Krogh had a very interesting grandson, who helped shaped the future of a young democracy some decades later. JC Krogh’s daughter, Elizabeth, married an attorney, James Louis Steyn Berrangé, and they had a son, Vernon Celliers Berrangé, who was born during the Anglo Boer War, on 25 November 1900. This son of theirs was later described as the “defender of the

Apart from the hotels, bars, grocery stores, banks, hardware stores and motor dealers, the street also attracted the religious fraternities. Even the Jewish residents favoured the street, but had to wait until after World War II for a synagogue to be built. In 1957, the local Nederduitsche Hervormde congregation acquired a piece of land in Krogh Street to build a church. At that stage the congregation had roughly 500 members. He also became more and more involved in high-profile political cases, such as the Alexandra bus boycott, the African mine workers’ strike and the Alexander Libel Trial. The Treason Trial of the late 1950s caused Berrangé to become a household name among certain sectors of the community. The Nationalist Party government arrested 156 people and charged them with high treason. The names of the accused included those of Oliver Tambo, Nelson Mandela, Chief Albert Luthuli and Helen Joseph. In March 1961, more than four years after the trial had started, the court found all the accused not guilty. Vernon Celliers Berrangé, grandson of JC Berrangé was carried aloft Krogh. He was always against authority, loved a challenge and revelled in danger.” After a short stint in the Royal Air Force, he returned to South Africa and studied law. He graduated in 1924 from the University of Cape Town with a BA LLB degree. He was admitted to the South African Bar in 1924, but in 1926 he left the Bar and went into partnership with his father. Berrangé built up a reputation as an outstanding criminal defence and human rights lawyer with a reputation for devastating cross-examination. Towards the end of each year, the University of Pretoria requests the name of Ridgeway College’s top student. This student is awarded a R10 000 bursary to study at that university. This year, Ridgeway College in Louis Trich ardt is proud to announce that their head girl, Ayesha Chhaya, is the recipient of this bursary. “Ayesha has consistently been our top achiever, proving that hard work and diligence pay off,” said executive head Ms Dionne Redfern. In what has been an incredibly disrupted year, many matriculants have struggled to remain motivated and focused. “This has not been the case with Ayesha,” said Redfern. “In a time of crisis, true character is revealed, and what we have seen in her is an unwavering commitment to her dreams. She has not faltered in her work and has, in fact, been all the more determined. With an aggregate of 93% in the Preliminary Examination, this bursary is so well deserved. We are hugely proud of her,” added Redfern. Ayesha is planning to study either medicine or engineering.

Local classification to take part in para-athletics Para-athletics On Saturday, 24 October, local para-athletes (athletes with physical impairments or challenges) will have the op portunity to be evaluated and provisionally classified for para-athletics sport in Louis Trichardt. The day’s proceedings will be restricted to limited numbers because of Covid-19, and all the requirements of the International Paralympic Committee’s guideline document regarding hygiene and infection control in times of Covid-19 will be adhered to. Classification of para-athletes is essential for any disabled athlete who wishes to participate at provincial, national, or international level. This also provides a stepping stone for those who do not necessarily want to participate in sport at a competitive level but who wish to make contact with other disabled people who
want to participate in various sporting codes for fun and for the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle. This is a Limpopo provincial classification event where Louisa Kirsten, one of South Africa’s international para-athletics classifiers, will provisionally classify prospective adult athletes with a provincial classification. These athletes would then be able to attend a national event where a panel of classifiers would evaluate the athlete and give him or her a national classification, thereby enabling the athlete to participate at internationally sanctioned events for international classification. A similar classification event for children will be held later this year. On the same day, Kotie Pienaar, a Gauteng wheelchair athlete who is a medallist at previous International Wheelchair Association games in Dubai, will be available to give athletes some guidelines
with regard to disciplines such as javelin, shotput and discus throwing. The day’s activities will be run from 08:00 until 15:30 and the venue is still to be confirmed. The local IsAbility Limpopo Sports Club is facilitating the classification and coaching by bringing the different stakeholders together. Anyone who is perhaps not interested in athletics but would like to learn how to become involved in other sports such as wheelchair tennis etc, can contact the club to be linked up with relevant structures and contacts. The club has invited anyone with any form of disability, wishing to be classified or to learn more about the opportunities for participation in sports and the classification requirements, to feel free to contact Sandy James (084 506 3333 / 015 516 9856) or Louisa Kirsten (083 561 5983) or e-mail is.ability.limpopo@ gmail.com.

DISTRIBUTION / VERSPREIDING:
