The Limpopo Department of Health continued with its Covid-19 mass-screening programme in the Vhembe area with a visit to Eltivillas on Wednesday. Apart from mobile clinics, door-to-door screening did take place unlike in Louis Trichardt the previous day were little if any door-to-door screening took place. Pictured is the executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda (right), at the home of Eltivillas resident Mr Bashid Cassim. Nenguda visited the 69-year-old Cassim to explain what the Health Department is doing.
Effectiveness of Limpopo Health Department’s response questioned (Contd from P1) He added that the media also assisted them in informing people when screening would take place in their area and assured residents that the screening process is non-invasive and merely consists of a questionnaire. The Zoutpansberger asked residents on its Facebook page to share with the newspaper their experiences of being screened at their homes. What soon became clear, however, was that little to no door-todoor screening was taking place in Louis Trichardt. When asked whether doorto-door screening had taken place in Louis Trichardt on Monday, Sirwali wanted to know if the newspaper was referring to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital or a local clinic? This prompted the question: What happened to the door-to-door screening then? “Hospitals … were doing that. Mass screening will be done on sites. We can’t refer all clients to hospitals. There is no contradiction here,” said Sirwali. The question, however, remains. Did door-to-door screening in Louis Trichardt
take place? To this, Sirwali responded: “From the 14 to 24 [April] households will be visited for screening by CHWs [community health workers]. Upon signs and symptoms, CHWs will activate and arrange for testing … at home.” He added that he was awaiting an update from the mass-screening coordinators and that they would adapt their plans to make sure that all areas were covered with regard to screening. The above highlighted once more the concerns about the Limpopo Health Department’s lack of transparency and effectiveness in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic and, for the same reason, the accuracy of their Covid-19 statistics. Regarding the above, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo issued a press statement on Wednesday wherein they call upon Limpopo Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba and her department to urgently inform the Limpopo Legislature’s health portfolio committee on developments and progress with regard to the province’s response to Covid-19. “While we acknowledge and welcome
the response to the virus by the Limpopo Department of Health, there has been very little information forthcoming to the health portfolio committee members to assist them in carrying out their duties. “We have written to the Health MEC, Phophi Ramathuba, and Health Portfolio chairperson Joshua Matlou on the 6th of April, calling on the Limpopo Health Department to communicate their progress, plans and their challenges in tackling the spread of Coronavirus in the province to the Health portfolio committee members, but to no avail,” reads the statement. With this severe lack of information in mind, the DA proposed a virtual meeting between the portfolio committee and the Provincial Department of Health to receive a verbal or written report on, among others, the number of tests conducted, the results published, the methodology of compiling the report and the associated backlog of tests and figures. In the meantime, door-todoor screening did apparently take place in Eltivillas on Wednesday.

Video of partying councillor a dilemma for local ANC By Staff Reporter A video that started circulating on social media early this week may turn out to be a major embarrassment for local ANC structures. One of Vhembe’s foremost political leaders allegedly defied the Covid-19 lockdown rules to have a birthday party at a friend’s house. To make matters worse, the video shows the partygoers singing songs mocking the minister of police, Bheki Cele. The video that started circulating on Monday shows a birthday party at a house in Louis Trichardt where a member of the executive committee of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr Tebogo Mamorobela, is present. Cllr Mamorobela can be seen dancing in the video, next to a table filled with liquor bottles. She celebrated her 39th birthday on Sunday. “Hey ... 39 has never looked this good -- beautiful!” Mamorobela can be heard saying. Others then shout “birthday girl! [laughter] ‘Khou vhona Bheki Cele o da hafha (Bheki Cele might soon come here)’.” Amidst more laughter, the partygoers say: “Ce! (short for Cele) Bheki Cele!” [then laugh] “It’s a big problem, Bheki Cele, come see the problem!”. While dancing, Cllr Mamorobela then shouts: “... uthini uCele!?” This means “What is it that Cele is saying” but in context can mean “What will Cele do to us?” The people present at the festivities include a prominent local businessman. Mamorobela holds a very senior position in the council and, on occasion, performed duties as acting mayor of the Makhado Municipality. She is part of the executive committee where she is Head of Corporate Services. She is also a Brand SA ambassador, and on Brand SA’s website her achievements are listed. Her political career started at the South African Youth Council (SAYC) and the South African Students Congress (SASCO). She served in the ANCYL Provincial Executive Committee of Limpopo as an executive member from 2012 to 2014. She has served as the deputy chairperson of the ANC Makhado sub-region since 2018 and is the convener of the ANCWL Young Woman Desk of Limpopo. Once the Zoutpansberger became aware of the video, the Makhado Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, was contacted for comment. He suggested at first that Cllr
Mamorobela be contacted for comment. When the paper pointed out to him that she is a senior office bearer of the municipality and, as such, represents the council, Bobodi requested that the questions be sent to him. This was done early on Tuesday. By Wednesday, when Bobodi still had not responded, he was contacted again. He then said that he did not check emails and requested that the questions be sent again via WhatsApp. This was done, upon which he only responded that the council would conduct an own investigation and only respond at a later stage. He also confirmed that the councillor had not been suspended. What became clear was that the matter had become a red herring for local ANC structures as the day progressed. When the ANC’s media liaison officer for the Vhembe region, Mr David Mukobi, was contacted, he referred the inquiry to the regional spokesperson for the ANC, Mr Tshifhiwa Dali. He was not available and could only be traced the next morning. He then referred the Zoutpansberger to the ANC regional secretary, Adv Anderson Mudunungu. Adv Mudunungu responded by saying that they were busy investigating the matter and that they would take action, should that be necessary. Several calls were made to try and contact Cllr Mamorobela on Tuesday. She did not answer, and questions were sent to her via WhatsApp. These were not answered either. Late on Tuesday afternoon, the Democratic Alliance’s provincial leader, Mr Jacques Smalle, laid charges at the Makhado police station against Mamorobela for violating the lockdown regulations. A copy of the video was also handed to the SAPS. “We decided to lay the charges after Minister Ndabeni-Abrahams’s sanction clearly showed that the ANC will not discipline their own members in accordance with the seriousness of the offence committed. Furthermore, no one is above the law and the lockdown regulations are there to save lives and must be taken seriously,” said Smalle. The DA also called upon the councillor to apologise publicly for her behaviour. On Wednesday, the ANC’s regional spokesperson, Mr Tshifhiwa Dali, said that a press conference would be held on Thursday at 10:00 in Thohoyandou, during which the issue would be discussed.

During an elephant-research project in Tanzania that tracked elephant routes by plane, the bush pilot involved had his Australian sister, Dale, visiting. A widow of the same age as Ian, they immediately connected and a year later were married. The next two years they lived in the Blue Mountain forests of Queensland in Australia before Dale also passed away. Once again, cancer had found him. After the death of his second wife, Ian returned to Lajuma although his solitude this time would be shorter. He met his last partner through mutual friends - Claire Bless, a French lady who grew up in Egypt. She was with him for the remainder of his life. Together, they toured the world, spending a lot of time in the Dominican Republic, where Claire has family. In the latter part of 2017, cancer would find Ian again and for the final time. He was diagnosed with untreatable prostate cancer. Even after the diagnosis he would, however, still live life to the fullest; never negative and always ready for adventure, he lived life to the end. Eventually, even Ian’s indomitable spirit could not escape the dark grasp of this scourge of a disease and he died with his family and Claire by his side. “My father had always been an impressive figure in my eyes. However, I never realised the extent of the respect for him until word of his death circulated and celebrations of his life would stream in from all over the world. He went much too early for the life that was still in him, but if we all strive to live but a shadow of the life he had, we will be able to call our existence worthwhile...” said Stephan. Ian is survived by his two sons Emil and Stephan and their families, his only grandchild Kayla as well as his two brothers, George and Gerald, their wives and children. A date for a memorial service to celebrate his life will be announced after the lockdown period.
Zoutpansberger
The Great North, Baobab, Capricorn of Limpopo.
One of Ian’s passions was fishing. “He taught me to fish before I could walk,” remarked his son Stephan with a smile. Photo supplied.
Ian Gaigher was both a renowned conservationist and scientist. Photo supplied.

To ensure the effectiveness of the lockdown in containing the spread of COVID-19, all stores that are currently permitted to remain open for the sale of other essential goods, including supermarkets, may therefore sell these products. We have been in contact with the CEOs of the large retailers, who have undertaken to sell these products at prices that simply cover their basic costs of production and distribution for the period of the lockdown,” said the department in a press release. The past week also saw a change to the monthly South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant payment dates. “Lessons learnt from the last payment cycle during the National Lockdown have compelled SASSA to review the payment dates going forward. As from the month of May 2020, disability and Older Persons Grants will be paid from the 4th day of the month. All other grants will be paid from the 6th of every month,” stated SASSA in a press release. Explaining the reason for changing the payment dates, SASSA explained that the grant payment for April was brought forward to 30 March and the first two days were dedicated to people with disabilities and older persons to ensure compliance with the State of Disaster requirements. “Impatient child support grant beneficiaries could not wait for the 1st of April and descended upon payment channels as early as 30 March. This posed all sorts of health challenges and it became difficult at some stores and ATMs to maintain social distancing,” said SASSA. What came out of this unpleasantness was that people with disabilities and the aged needed to be protected from the month-end rush at payment Thanks to political cartoonist Brad Skiff who draws for the Omak-Okanogan County Chronicle who gave permission for the cartoon to be used outlets and therefore payment needed to be by members of the International Society for Weekly Newspaper Editors. staggered in such a way that these categories of National news

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 17 APRIL 2020
Net so is dit vandag.

I am ... the Way, the Truth and the Life Jesus answered and said to him: “Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” John 1:50.
T
he way of salvation is by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, that is by trusting Him. There are two things I have to say to you. First, God commands you to believe in Jesus Christ. Secondly, nothing you can do will please God so much as for you to believe in His only begotten Son, whom He has set forth to be the propitiation for sin. These are two strong things to say and I will give you God’s Word for them. 1 John 3:23. “And this is his commandment: that we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ”. If you are commanded to do it, do it. If you have salvation promised you when you believe in the Name of Jesus, then believe and have salvation. “Believe in the name of his Son”. That is the first point. God commands you; will you disobey? The second thing I said was that nothing you can do will please God so much as for you now to believe in Jesus Christ. Look at John 6:28,29. “Then they said to Him: What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” They meant, what are the best works, the works most pleasing to God. “Jesus answered and said to them: This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” If you could build a row of houses for homeless people, or build a church, or pay the salaries of a hundred missionaries, it would not half so well please God as for you to believe in his Son, Jesus Christ. Trust Christ. Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”. - Rev Johan Marais (Louis Trichardt Baptist Church)

The refuse collection in the Makhado municipal area continues, albeit at different intervals. In the central business district, workers collect rubbish every week, whereas the interval at residential areas is every two weeks. On Friday, these two workers were spotted cleaning up in Burger Street, Louis Trichardt.

Donations bring relief for dozens of local families Covid-19 relief
The Limpopo Health MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, and Transport and Community Safety MEC Ms Mavhungu Lerule Ramakhanya visited several shops and taxi ranks in the Soutpansberg area on Monday to monitor people’s compliance with the Covid-19 lockdown regulations. This included a visit to the mall and taxi rank at Elim, as well as the taxi rank in Louis Trichardt. Pictured is Ramathuba (left) demonstrating the correct way to wash your hands during her visit to the Elim Mall. Photo: Limpopo Department of Health.
Food parcels were distributed to dozens of needy families in the region the past week by representatives of the Department of Social Development. The bulk of these food parcels were donated by residents of Louis Trichardt. On Friday morning, Makhado Mayor Samuel Munyai received the first batch of 40 food hampers from residents. The residents formed a group, called Makhado CV’19 Assist, to collect funds. The group collected close to R47 000, which paid for 185 food hampers. Each hamper contains necessities such as maize meal, soup, pilchards and cooking oil. The food hampers were bought from Spar, who also donated additional items such as extra baked beans and soap. The items were packed in bags by Bergcare, a local NPC that also serves as a depot from where the parcels are being distributed.
The families in need are from various areas in the Vhembe District. Apart from Louis Trichardt and Tshikota, needy families were identified in Mpheni, Vleyfontein, Madombidzha, Tshilwavhusiku and Matsa (Nzhelele). “The families and individuals whom we identified are in distress, they don’t have any source of income and they rely mostly on our Social Relief of Distress (SRD) programme,” said the social worker involved with the project, Ms Pearl Manana. She explained that some of the recipients have chronic illnesses, but they do not qualify for a disability grant, because they do not meet certain criteria. On Wednesday morning, a further 60 food hampers were collected from Bergcare. The remainder of the food parcels will be distributed later in the week. The Makhado CV’19 group has also embarked on a further campaign to try and collect more funds to buy food hampers for destitute families.
Homeless get temporary shelter at show grounds Covid-19 relief
During the mayor’s visit on Friday, he thanked the volunteers who assist with cooking food for the homeless. Photographed (with everyone adhering to social distancing guidelines) are, at the back, from left to right, Ms Tshilidzi Randima (social worker), the acting director of corporate services, Mr Nndweleni Dagada, Cllr Kanukani Maphubu, Social Development District Executive Manager Ms Nkhumeleni Lalumbe and the mayor, Cllr Samuel Munyai. In the front the volunteers are Ms Mavis Khosa, Ms Gundo Ramakhanya, Ms Tinyiko Mahlaule, Ms Frengelina Makhubele and Ms Eunice Seshoka.
A temporary shelter for homeless people was established at the Makhado Show Grounds last week. The more than a dozen people who still roamed the streets in the central business district were taken to the shelter. Last Tuesday (7 April), officials from the Department of
Social Development started to assess the cases. At that stage, 15 people, mostly boys and young men, were being accommodated at the shelter. A call was made to residents and the business community to assist with basic necessities such as food and toiletries as well as mattresses and blankets. The community immediately responded and supplied
almost all that was needed. The municipality also arranged that food be prepared for the people staying there. The shelter was visited by the mayor and a delegation from the municipality on Friday. The people staying there seemed to be quite content, for now at least, to have decent protection from the elements.
