Toe ek so om
die hoek hardloop, toe steek hy my. Binne minute was lede van die dorpswag by Jimmy se huis.
“Jy kon hoor daar was ‘n groot rumoer by daardie huis. Answers few as road project starts “washing” away By Andries van Zyl
These two photos above of two open stormwater drainage pits in Alwyn Street were taken and sent to the Makhado Municipality. One can clearly see how rocks and mud are washing into the drainage system while the process of resurfacing this street (as well as Kameel Street) has all but come to a complete standstill. Below is the contractors’ haphazard response to the open drainage pits - precariously balancing concrete slabs on loose bricks to cover the pits.

Zoutpansberger
The Makhado Municipality have yet to answer follow-up questions regarding the rehabilitation of Kameel and Alwyn Street in Louis Trichardt. From the start of the project, awarded under Tender 49/2021 to Tshedza Consulting Engineers CC, with Luzuko Trading Enterprise CC appointed as contractor, raised some eyebrows. Workers wasted no time in stripping away the original surfaces of these streets, but construction activities have seemingly come to a complete standstill. The Zoutpansberger reported on the project at the beginning of November this year, voicing the concern of local environmentalists, who questioned the way in which the project was being implemented and the impact it would have on the local environment. This included problems regarding the placement of the project’s industrial site office in a park earmarked for recreational purposes in Tshirululuni Street; whether a water-use license had been obtained for using the municipal borehole located in the same park for construction purposes; and, most importantly, the dumping of building rubble in protected watercourse areas and natural tributaries. In reaction to these questions, the Makhado Municipality’s answers were fairly vague, merely stating that they did not foresee any negative
impact from the project and that the contractor was dumping the building rubble in an area designated to them. The questions the municipality did not answer were about the contract value and why undertaking such a major project at the start of the rainy season was necessary. After weeks of trying to get a response from the municipality, these questions remain unanswered. The recent good rains are exactly the reason why the project seems to be standing still now, again begging the afore-mentioned question. Another concern by residents was the fact that the untarred streets would cause major blockages to the existing stormwater drainage systems in these street, as mud and rock now freely washes into the system. This has also started to happen now. Again, no response was received from the municipality. What did happen was, and this might be in response to the newspaper’s enquiries about the open stormwater drainage pits, that a contract worker started to haphazardly “cover” the open stormwater drainage pits with slabs of concrete precariously balanced on loose bricks (see accompanying photos). At the time of our going to press, the newspaper was still waiting for a response regarding the state and progress of the project from municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi. Chances are very good that construction work will not resume soon, especially if the rain keeps coming down.

Ek was nogal kwaad vir hom daaroor gewees. Alles gebeur so vinnig.

Christmas Message
SIU urges citizens to play active role in preventing and exposing corruption Corruption
My name is Ntavhanyeni Samuel Munyai, the mayor of Makhado Local Municipality. The festive season is upon us. Families and friends are going to gather and club together to celebrate this eventful year and the year ahead. We must do so responsibly. We would like to appeal to motorists and pedestrians to take extra care on the roads. Let us all obey the traffic rules to enable us to arrive alive, and importantly let us not drink and drive. The scourge of Covid pandemic is still rife. This virus does not take a holiday. Let us continue to adhere to the prescribed health protocols by wearing mask, washing our hands regularly , sanitising and keeping a social distance of 1.5m. We are also urging those who have not yet vaccinated to do so. During this festive season, we must promote peace and safety within our living environments, and work in partnership with law enforcement agencies in our societies in combating gender-based violence and femicide. We will continue with our quest to bring and deliver quality servicies to our communities. On behalf of Makhado Municipality, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.

MR KM NEMANAME, ACTING MUNICIPAL MANAGER Vision: A Dynamic Hub For Socio-Economic Development By 2050. Mission: To ensure effective utilization of economic resources to address socio-economic Imperatives through mining , tourism and agriculture.
As the international community celebrated International Anti-Corruption Day last Thursday, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) urged South Africans to play an active role in preventing and exposing corruption by reporting it to law enforcement agencies. “Corruption and maladministration in the affairs of government departments, municipalities and State-Owned Entities are depriving the public of valuable resources. Preventing and exposing corruption makes it possible for the government to invest public resources in building and maintaining public infrastructure, and increasing access to basic services like water and sanitation, healthcare and education,” said SIU national spokesperson Mr Kaizer Kganyago in a press release. Between April 2020 and March 2021, the SIU recovered financial losses suffered by the State to the value of R1.8 billion, prevented losses to the tune of R2.7 billion, and set aside administrative decisions and contracts amounting to R7.1 billion. “The money could have been lost to corruption, had no one bothered to blow the whistle,” said Kganyago. During the 2020/21 financial year, the SIU received a total of 1 276 allegations of corruption and maladministration in the affairs of government institutions. A total of 410 allegations were concerning the affairs of the national government, followed by the Gauteng and Limpopo provinces with 258 and 128 respectively. The SIU received 114 corruption allegations from KwaZulu Natal and 104 from the Eastern Cape.
Seventy allegations came from the NorthWest, 65 from the Western Cape, 57 from Free State and 52 from Mpumalanga. People of the Northern Cape only reported 18 allegations of corruption to the SIU. “It was through the work of brave and caring South Africans that the SIU managed to motivate for President Cyril Ramaphosa to sign Proclamation R23 of 2020, authorising it to investigate allegations of corruption, maladministration and payments made in relations to the procurement of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by State institutions. As a result, the SIU managed to investigate a scooter ambulances tender in the Eastern Cape and have the tender declared invalid and unlawful, awarding of irregular tender for the construction of Talana shacks in Limpopo, costly disinfection of Gauteng schools, the Digital Vibes communication tender and irregular PPE procurement in the Gauteng Department of Health,” said Kganyago. South Africans can report corruption and maladministration allegations in the affairs of government institutions to the SIU via its national Hotline at 0800 037 774, by email at siu@hotline.co.za, per SMS at Tel 30916, by fax2email at 086 726 1681 and on their website, www.thehotline.co.za.

Musina Municipality clean up their act After many complaints reached the newspaper last week about the stench coming from piled-up rubbish and rotten food that had been strewn along the N1 at the Beitbridge Border Post (on South Africa’s side) for months, Musina Municipality sent a team out to tidy and clean up. The picture looks a whole lot better now and vendors who sell food near the entrance/exit gate at the border, as well as people travelling to and from SA and Zimbab we, say they can breathe again. A bell ceremony is an honour and privilege that is granted to the grade 1’s that first comes into the school and the grade 7’s that graduate from the school. “We have the bell ceremony to pay tribute to the grade 7’s because they have completed their primary school years. We also have the bell ceremony in order to welcome the grade 1’s into the ‘big school’.” said one of our teachers in charge of this special ceremony.
Our school’s bell ceremony began about seven years ago and has been an important tradition in our school ever since. Usually, the grade 1’s, grade 7’s and their parents participate in Laerskool Louis Trichardt’s bell ceremony. The ceremony is performed when the principal calls your name to ring the bell. - By Nommy Dafuleya

Prefect Project
This year was very wonderful for us leaders. It was really fun to have gotten to work together and know each other. We had various projects this year, namely: The goodwill project where we gather nonperishable foods for the less fortunate. The SPCA-project where we gathered animal food for the animals at the SPCA. We had two trips to the Hanglip-
plantation to pick up waste products. We also planted trees al over our school. These were all very awesome projects and we enjoyed every minute
of it. Although my most favourite one was when we visited the health care workers at the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital and brought along with us letters from the school children and something to thank them for their hard work. It had been a very difficult and devastating time for them, but after we had left, we were very glad that we could put smiles on their faces. – Rolivhuwa Murashiwa

Amongst the larger projects that were completed this year, were the upgrading the netball courts and the excellent WI-FI and Internet access to all classrooms. Our school is equipped for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and our teachers have all received training in digital education. ‘n Suksesvolle akademiese toer is gehou. There were also highlights is sport and culture. No less than thirteen learners received their provincial colours in netball, cycling and hockey respectively. A Gr.4-learner received a first place in the same competition for the English Entertainment Section. We are very proud of all our learners. I would like to wish all our learners, staff and parents a wonderful holiday and a blessed Christmas.
So mond kort jam!

Grade 7 Tour
Wild, food and adventure – those are the 3 words I’d use to describe the grade 7-tour of 2021. On the 30th of August we headed out on our wild adventure. Our first stop was at Schoemansdal Educational Centre where we spend two nights, got to bond, struggled a bit and had fun at the same time. We ziplined, made race cars and worked together to finish challenges that laid before. On Wednesday morning we headed out again and our next stop was at school where we got a nice box of pizza and refreshing cooldrink. During that stop we

were allowed to change suitcase and say hello to mommy and daddy before we headed out again. After a nice lunch we got on our busses and headed to the ATKV Eiland Spa resort for a nice relaxing time. Our time there was fun and relaxing, nothing challenging. We spend two nights there, on the 3rd of September we went back, we were sad and happy at the same time. To our teacher and the organisers we would like to thank you for putting a highlight on our final year at Laerskool Louis Trichardt. - Mukutsuri Khosa
Pretdae
netbal. Daar was ‘n glybaan en springkasteel indien jy wou afkoel.

Eduan Dreyer vra: “Dit is mos ‘n ander naam vir loadshedding nè? Ek stem saam Muneiwa, ek voel jou frustrasie. “It’s dark and we have to play outside, because the WI-FI is not working!” is klein Gabriella Rooi se antwoord. Ek is seker dat daar ‘n hele paar ouers is wat haar mening sekondeer. Naledi Sikhwari noem dit: “A shade to be dry.” Droog? Baie!” Alhoewel die meerderheid van ons Mini-Triegies heel duidelik weet wat beurtkrag is, was daar ook ‘n paar ander menings soos: “When you are only a little strong”, sê Osedza – as die krag afgaan, is almal se spoed gebreek! So sluit ons dus ons ondersoek af. Wat is beurtkrag? “As die krag afgaan.” sê Johan Breytenbach
Goodwill projects The goodwill projects during the year were successful. There was a goodwill project each term. During the first term, the learners had to bring tin food containers that were non-perishable. The prefects packed plenty of boxes and gave the food to elderly and less fortunate people. Second term we had a value-related project. The school contributed by buying badges that reminded the school of morals such as: Peace, Hope, Love and Faith. A huge amount of money, approximately R28 000 was generated and donated to Makhado Care Group for cancer patients. During the third term, food and accessories such as blankets, toys and cushions were
collected from the school community to provide to the SPCA. We also had a fun project called “Pet Character Day” where we donated a further R8000. At the end of term 4 we had a “Walk for Bibles”. All Gr.1 to 7 learners, their parents and people in the community participated in the voluntary walk around the school, as it is for a good cause. Al money raised were donated to the Bible Society of South Africa. Our school loves doing goodwill projects. - Ameera Manjra

What is loadshedding?
- By Nommy Dafuleya
Loadshedding has become a very big problem in South-Africa and it is very important that the upcoming generation know and understand what it is. The famous phrase “Knowledge is power” is so true. If the Mini-Triegies know more about what loadshedding is, they will know more ways to overcome it. Here are some of the answers we received when we asked them what loadshedding is: “Electricity.” “It is when electricity goes off and we must turn on the generator.” “When electricity is off.” “Something that makes you strong.” “Lightning.” “When electricity is gone and doesn’t come.” Some of the Mini-Triegies did not know what loadshedding is.

– Zaurich Jordaan
Academic Tour
The academic tour this year was like no other. Ms. Adendorff (our principal) sent us off with a lovely message. The bus ride went by in a flash for some of us, while for others it felt like an eternity. We arrived at Moholoholo as exited as ever and ready to take on the tasks. The journey to our rooms was no easy task but the activities that followed made it worthwhile. From touring the Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre to the evening campfire, it was all an amazing experience. The second day was even better for the learners, from the thrill of paintballing and river rafting to the relaxing trip to Swadini Forever Resort and ending it with a fascinating night drive after dissecting a warthog. The learners loved every second of it. The last day was filled with gratitude for all the amazing experiences. The surprise trip to Jabulani and the other elephants brought smiles to everyone’s faces and everyone was in awe of Maira the baby cheetah. Goodbyes were said when we got back home but those memories will never be forgotten. – By Ori Musekene

TRIEGIEFLITSE 2021
Netbal
Sports has been compared to war. Two sides, both with the same goal – to win and they are ready to do anything to do so. To win a war, full commitment, dedication and hard work is required from every single warrior. In 2021, Laerskool Louis Trichardt send for an indestructible army in the Triegie Netball teams. Everyone of the 17 talented teams faced intense battles with Ridgeway Preparatory School and Laerskool Musina and all performed amazingly, but the true
heroines were the school’s first team. They qualified for the Limpopo Championship games where they ended third and are now the bronze medallists of Limpopo. We would like to thank the Head of Sport, the Netball Organiser for your support. To every Netball Coach thank you for your love, guidance, memories and achievements (not the burpees, though) and finally to our parents for allowing us to play netball, we couldn’t have done it without you. - By Mukutsuri Khosa
Mnr. Du Toit en Me.
The sensation of cycling This year the competition was fierce but our learners were not afraid of new challenges. This year our team was surely the one to beat and continue to prove themselves constantly. This all started with their love for cycling and with the help of Mr. Ehlers our team came out victorious. They were triumphant and became the first team
in our school’s history to go to the SA’s. The school has been rooting for them and are proud of them for their great success. The season has been tough but we are grateful and proud that our cycling team did not give up and continued to push until they came up victorious, we give recognition to each member on the team
and continue to support each individual cyclist. They did not only do this for winning but for the love they have for the sport they hold so dear to them. We not only want them to be successful but to enjoy it each and every chance they get to cycle. - By Ori Musekene

KNP to again impose quotas on number of day visitors To ensure a safe and pleasant stay in the Kruger National Park (KNP), South African National Parks (SANParks) HAS urged visitors to the park to book in advance and to observe the rules of the park over the festive season from 15 December until 11 January next year. They also reminded day visitors that daily quotas will once again apply at the entrance gates. Three time slots are available for pre-bookings made by day visitors prior to arrival. They are:

ties; it is applied throughout the year, although we mostly reach carrying capacity during long weekends and school holidays resulting in our having to turn visitors away,” says KNP spokesperson Ike Phaahla in a press release. Pre-booked day visitors will get preference over non-booked day visitors at the gate but must ensure that they arrive within their booked time slots. People arriving outside the booked time slot will be regarded as non-booked and therefore will not receive preference and could be turned away. These bookings can be changed as well through SANParks Reservations offices if need be. “It is also important to continue to obey the current COVID-19 protocols of wearing of masks in public, social distancing adherence and sanitising our hands as screening will continue to be done at entrance gates. The park has made plans for increased visibility of both traffic officials and visitor-management personnel to monitor speeding, after-hours travelling and general behaviour on the roads. Alcohol consumption by day visitors is strictly prohibited at all leisure sites such as swimming pools and picnic spots. Proper searches will be conducted by security at all main gates to ensure that no contents of any toxic substance are taken into the park. “Management is urging visitors to cooperate with officials who will be on duty and to report unbecoming behaviour to the gate officials or call the emergency call-centre number on the entry permits,” advised Phaahla. Visitors are also urged to help keep the park clean by disposing of their litter at designated areas, not alighting from vehicles at undesignated areas, not speeding, and adhering to all rules
and regulations as stipulated on the gate permit. Visitors are urged to be courteous and cooperative at sightings to avoid inconveniencing other road users. Please plan your trip carefully, allowing sufficient time to enjoy the bush and to get to your destination. Gate operating hours will be from 05:30 to 18:30 around December and January. Visitors should also take note of the following important information: * Visitors will be able to book up to 80% of Day Visitor Quota per gate via SANParks Reservations offices on 012 428 9111 and online at www.sanparks.org. * Day-visitor pre-bookings are subject to a non-refundable booking fee of R48 per adult and R24 per child. * Day visitors who have pre-booked will still be required to pay Conservation Fees or use a valid Wild Card to enter the Park. The Conservation Fee for SA residents as well as Zimbabwean and Mozambican nationals (passport required to prove this) is R110 per adult and R55 per child (between ages 2 – 11). For nationals of Eswatini and other SADC countries, the conservation fees are R220 per adult and R110 per child. For all other guests, the standard conservation fees of R440 for adults and R220 for children apply. * Guests planning to use Wild Cards are requested to ensure membership is valid before arrival and this can best be done online at www. sanparks.org/wild. Guests using Wild Cards also need to produce their ID and valid Wild Card Membership Confirmation Letter. * The number and profile of persons (adults and children) on the reservation and actual persons arriving should correspond.

na from Johannesburg via Polokwane on 23 December 2021 at 19:00 and depart back to Johannesburg (from Musina via Polokwane) on Sunday, 26 December 2021 at 15:25. On 30 December it will leave Johannesburg again at 19:00 for Musina, travelling back from the border town to Johannesburg on 2 January 2022 at 15:25. Special focus will be given to several areas when services resume, including an improved customer experience, customer and employee health and safety; screening of staff and customers before and during travel; social distancing at waiting areas/sales offices/platforms and onboard the train; and the sanitising of trains before departure, en-route, and at destination stations. “Customers are reminded that the serving of food on the trains is still prohibited, and customers should bring enough food/drinks for the duration of their journey. Limited accommodation is available, and it is recommended that customers make a booking and finalise their travel arrangements well in advance by phoning our National Call Centre on 086 000 8888,” said PRASA.
PRASA resumes service from Musina To take advantage of the holiday season and the festive rush, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) is preparing to resume its Shosholoza Meyl long-distance rail services. This is especially good news for persons wishing to travel between Musina and Johannesburg via Polokwane. The preparatory work follows the termination of services at the end of March 2021 because of Covid-19, which contributed to operational and logistical challenges. “Long-distance rail service cancellation had a negative impact on long-distance rail transportation, and our loyal customers were greatly inconvenienced. Given the high peak traffic volumes during the festive period and road fatalities, Shosholoza Meyl offers the public an alternative, safe and affordable mode of long-distance travel that will also help ease the congestion on our roads,” said PRASA in a press release. PRASA resumed its Shosholoza Meyl services this week. It will make its first trip to Musi-
