Wie kan nou ‘n bedrag van R77 000 – en dit net vir die elektrisiteitsgedeelte - aan die Makhado Munisipaliteit betaal? Een senior burger, wat al 67 jaar in Louis Trichardt woon, het so ‘n buitensporige rekening in Januarie ontvang. “Dit is onmoontlik dat die elektrisiteit R77 000 kan wees. Ek is ook R7 000 vir water aangeslaan en dit terwyl ek ‘n boorgat het. Hulle maak net wat hulle wil en daar is niemand om mee te praat nie,” sê die inwoner, wat anoniem wil bly. Hy het sy “onmoontlike” rekening aan die Soutpansberg Belastingbetalersvereniging (SBBV), waarvan hy ‘n lid is, oorhandig. Die SBBV sê by monde van hulle bestuurder, me. Aretha Smith, dat hulle vele klagtes in hierdie verband ontvang het. Munisipale woordvoerder mnr. Louis Bobodi het bevestig dat die munisipaliteit talle klagtes oor buitensporige hoë meterlesings ontvang het. Volgens hom lê die fout by die diensverskaffer wat die tender gekry het om die kraglesings te neem, nie by die munisipaliteit nie. “Die diensverskaffer het die verkeerde informasie of lesings aan ons verskaf,” sê Bobodi.
Mnr. Corné Fourie, hoof uitvoerende beampte van ETL Geographical Information Services wat as Bires handel dryf, het gesê dat Telkom in ‘n groot mate te blameer is. Die plaaslike kantoor het verskuif van Burgerstraat 115 na Burgerstraat 145. “Telkom het ons belowe dat ons net een dag sonder telefoonlyne sou wees, maar dit het ‘n maand geneem. Ons gebruik ‘n gesofistikeerde, gerekenariseerde stelsel waar die inligting direk by die Pretoria kantoor ontvang word. Weens die gebrek aan telefoonlyne moes die gegewens met die hand in ‘n Excel-program opgeneem word en daar het die fout ingesluip,” sê Fourie. Fourie het gesê dat sowat 2 600 rekenings geaffekteer is. Me. Hester Schoeman is een van dié wat raadop is met die hoë meterlesings op die rekening wat sy aan die begin van Februarie ontvang het. Die rekening is gedateer 18 Januarie en die meterlesings is op 14 Desember geneem. Daarvolgens dui die drie-fase elektrisiteitsmeter aan dat sy en die huurders op haar perseel 3885 eenhede krag gebruik het. Elke huurder, asook die hoofhuis, het ‘n eie elektrisiteitsmeter wat nie voorafbetaalde meters is nie. (Vervolg op p.2)

Chauke could face further ten charges Brighton Chauke (30) is still behind bars and will remain there. Chauke, who until his eventual capture was one of the Soutpansberg’s most wanted criminals, appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court on Monday. For almost a year, Chauke evaded arrest after he managed to escape from the police’s holding cells in Musina in October 2010. At the time of his escape he, along with his brother Shorty, was awaiting trial for a murder case in Musina, as well as a spate of armed robberies in Louis Trichardt. Shorty (41) has
since been sentenced to 45 years imprisonment on the armed robbery charges. Since his arrest, Chauke has been positively connected to a spate of violent armed robberies, housebreakings and attempted murders. The near-fatal attack on Messrs Jan Louw (49) and Ferdie Landman (19) on 28 May of last year is included among these attacks. It has also come to light that Chauke has indeed been positively connected to the murder of the 51-year-old Mr Eric Neshunzhi on the farm Goedehoop on July 1. During Monday’s appear-
ance, Chauke appeared on the three charges of armed robbery on which his brother had been convicted. These charges relate to three robberies in April 2009 at three different businesses in Louis Trichardt. Of these, one was caught on security cameras. The State asked for a provisional trial date on Monday, in order to finalise all the charges against Brighton. An additional ten charges could be added to the current charges. Brighton will appear in court again on 6 March.

rekening het ook sommer uit die bloute verdubbel. Bobodi het op die navraag oor Schoeman se meterlesings gereageer.“Ons is besig om haar rekening reg te maak. Daar is geen stappe wat sy hoef te neem nie. Alles sal regkom,” het Bobodi gesê. Hy het ook gesê dat die munisipaliteit nie meters toets nie. Die vraag oor die waterlesings is teen druktyd steeds onbeantwoord gelaat.
Fourie het op sy beurt aan die Zoutpansberger gesê dat hy Schoeman aanraai om mnr. Manny Netto by die Burgerstraatkantoor te gaan sien oor die elektrisiteitsmeters en die saak te laat ondersoek. Beide Fourie en Bobodi het die versekering gegee dat die nodige stappe geneem word om die regstellings aan alle foutiewe kraglesings vir Desember te doen.

There seems to be a competition about who can make a better sex video in the small town. Since the beginning of this year, more than six sex videos have been circulating in Musina. All of the sex videos have been made by the participants themselves. Most of the videos involve grown-up, married men and underage girls. An unconfirmed report states that one of the men who had “acted” in one of the videos was arrested and released on bail when a girl’s parents opened a case of statutory rape after they had seen the video.
W/O Peter Mudau, spokesperson of the police station, said he could not confirm or deny any arrest “as I was on sick leave.” He confirmed, however, that the management of Musina police station was aware of and concerned about the high number of sex videos circulating in the area. “As management of the station, we recently had a meeting where we decided that we should warn the community that the recording of sex videos is illegal.” “Any such videos that we find in the public domain will be used tol arrest the culprits and prosecute them,” said Mudau. He could not confirm whether it was true that there were sex videos involving a Home Af-
fairs woman, attached to the Beit Bridge border post, having a five-some with four SANDF members. Unconfirmed reports say the woman has since taken leave as a result of stress after being mocked by colleagues who had seen the video. “We believe technology is playing a big role in this thing. Children now have access to technological things like What’s up and Internet though cellphones and computers. These things gives them access to unauthorized things like pornographic material. We believe some of the children are getting involved in sex video after seeing them in their cellphones and computers,” Mudau said.

Still time to register for ballet classes Registration for ballet classes is still open at the new Northern Ballet Academy which officially started with classes in Louis Trichardt on 23 January. Classes are being conducted by Marlie Barnard, an instructor affilliated with the Dancing Academy of South Africa (DASA). The classes will be conducted in the classrooms next to the Ferdie Beyers Hall on the corner of Burger and Erasmus Street. Classes will include pre-grade examinations syllabi for tiny tots, pre-primary and primary grades, focussing on development of creativity and expression through movement and music; Grades 1 to 5, which develop technical excellence by introducing steps in a care-
ful progression of achievable measurable goals; and major examination syllabi, which include intermediate foundation, intermediate, advanced and advanced performance. SAMWU gee burgemeester sewe dae Die munisipale werkersunie, SAMWU, het die burgemeester van Makhado sewe dae gegee om aan hul eise ten opsigte van beter munisipale bestuur te voldoen. SAMWU het hul griewe gelug tydens ‘n wettige optog deur die strate van Louis Trichardt verlede Vrydag. ‘n Dag voor die optog het plaaslike SAMWUvoorsitter mnr. Elvis Tlou ook die Soutpansberg Belastingbetalers (SBBV) genader om deel te neem aan die optog. Die SBBV het ingestem, maar minute voor die beplande optog het SAMWU se provinsiale voorsitter, mnr. Timson Tshililo, ‘n stokkie voor die SBBV se deelname gesteek. “Mnr. Tlou het aan ons verduidelik hoe die werkers sonder gereedskap moet probeer werk. As hulle ‘n pyp moet regmaak, is daar nie pype of klampe in die stoor beskikbaar nie. Dit neem hulle baie lank om gereedskap en middele te bekom. In die lig van daardie verduideliking was ons bereid om hulle te ondersteun. Ons is dit nie noodwendig eens met hulle totale optrede nie, maar in terme van dienslewering sou ons saamwerk,” het die SBBVvoorsitter, me. Inga Gilfillan, gesê. Die optog na die munisipale terrein is gekenmerk deur onderonsies tussen SAMWU-leiers en die plaaslike polisie. Tshililo het aan die polisie gesê dat hulle nie die optog moet kaap deur voor hulle uit te stap nie. By die munisipale gronde
aangekom, het Tshililo verduidelik waarom hy nie die SBBV wou toelaat om aan die optog deel te neem nie. “Ons het nie ‘n verhouding met hulle nie, ons het ‘n verhouding met die ANC. Ons het nie ‘n verhouding met individue nie,” het Tshililo gesê. Tshililo het in ‘n uurlange toespraak op die Samwu memorandum uitgebrei, waarna hy dit aan die burgemeester, rdl. Mavhungu Luruli, oorhandig het vir ondertekening. Luruli het in haar repliek gesê dat sy nie enige probleme voorsien om binne die sewe dae op te tree nie, aangesien dit “interne munisipale sake is wat maklik is om te prosesseer,” het sy gesê. Die memorandum het ‘n sterkbewoorde uiteensetting bevat van die frustrasies van werkers. Hulle beskuldig Luruli daarvan dat haar kantoor die nood van die werkers ignoreer, “terwyl korrupsie in die munisipaliteit hoogty vier”. Die memorandum lui dat die booshede van korrupsie, nepotisme en swak werksomstandighede van die werkers uitgeroei moet word. “Alle raadslede en direkteure wat by hierdie wanbestuur betrokke is, moet voor die gereg gebring word en die gevolge dra van hulle vermorsing van openbare bronne vir hul eie selfsugtige voordele,” lees die memorandum ondermeer. Daar is te velde getrek teen “die skokkende wyse waarop tenders uitgedeel word aan familie en vriende.” Die volgende eise is gestel:
*Werkers wat afgedank is omdat hulle korrupsie openbaar gemaak het, moet heraangestel word. *Beamptes met belange in die proses moet verwyder word van die tenderkomitee. *In-diepte ondersoeke moet geloods word na tenders toegeken aan die maatskappye Jodaushota Construction, Timo Constructiom, Makasana Construction, Paxair Projects, Muravha Building Construction, Thiko Consulting, Immoral Building Construction, Teddy Pigrims, Vhaluvhu Construction, Masase, Siebathavha, Muspat Trading12cc, Zwivhuya zwia todea Trading and Projects, Vhakoma Trading Enterprise en Dandimu Construction. * Werkers moet voorsien word van die nodige gereedskap, asook beskermende klere wat op standaard is. ‘n Ondersoek moet geloods word na die dubbele aankoop van beskermende klere vir die elektrisiteitsafdeling *Basiese munisipale dienste moet nie aan privaat maatskappye toegeken word nie. * Aanstellings moet in vakante poste gemaak word en beweerde gevalle van nepotisme moet onmiddellik hersien word. * Elke direkteur of bestuurder wat by vrugtelose uitgawes betrokke was, moet aangekla word en die geld moet van hulle verhaal word. Samwu sê dat hulle hulle aksie sal verskerp indien daar nie aan hulle eise gehoor gegee word nie.

Beweerde molesteerder weer vasgetrek Die lang arm van die gereg het weer ‘n man wat daarvan verdink word dat hy ‘n meisie gemolesteer het, ingehaal. Die 42-jarige man, wat nie geïdentifiseer kan word nie aangesien hy nog nie gepleit het nie, is in Upington vir ‘n tweede keer vasgetrek. Die man het Maandag in die Streekhof in Louis Trichardt verskyn op ‘n klag van verkragting en seksuele aanranding. Hy is in Mei 2010 gearresteer, nadat sy stiefdogter, nou 15 jaar oud, die klagte teen hom gebring het. Die man is getroud met die kind se ma.
Dié klagte teen die man het betrekking op ‘n voorval waar hy die meisie na bewering onsedelik aangerand het en daarna by meer as een geleentheid probeer het om haar weer te molesteer. Na sy inhegtenisname is die man op R2 000 borg vrygelaat. ‘n Lasbrief vir sy arrestasie is egter in Februarie 2011 uitgereik. Dit het gevolg nadat sy prokureur op die 18de van daardie maand van die saak onttrek het, omdat hy geen instruksies van die man ontvang het nie en ook nie geweet het waar die man hom bevind nie. Tydens die man se hofversky-
ning Maandag het hy aangevoer dat hy ekstra werk in Upington gaan doen het om geld te kry om sy prokureur te kan betaal. Hy het verder gesê dat hy ook in Vereeniging gearresteer is weens ‘n “ander misdryf.” Die man is glo later onskuldig bevind aan hierdie misdryf. Die man is borg geweier en moet weer op 28 Februarie in die hof verskyn. ‘n Prokureur van die Regshulpraad sal vir hom aangestel word. “Intussen bly jy in aanhouding, sodat jy nie weer in Upington kan verdwaal nie,” het die landdros gesê.

Legendariese oom Piet Wessels oorlede
Oom Piet Wessels, een van die laaste oorblywende groot geeste in die Soutpansberg, is verlede Woensdag oorlede in die ouderdom van 81 in die Tzaneen Medi-Clinic. Pieter Wouter de Wet Wessels is gebore op 3 April 1930. Hy het aan die Grey College in Bloemfontein gematrikuleer. Dit was in Bloemfontein waar hy vir Athri Henning, wat sy eggenote van 54 jaar sou word, ontmoet het terwyl sy in Oranje Meisieskool was. Hulle is getroud in 1957 en het kort daarna verhuis na die plaas Piesanghoek buite Louis Trichardt, wat aan sy skoonouers behoort het. Oom Piet het die boerdery oorgeneem na sy skoonpa se dood en begin om plantasies en avokadobome aan te plant. Hy was een van die eerste boere wat met avokados begin boer het en van die oudste bome in die omgewing staan op die plaas. Oom Piet het nie net met avokados geboer nie, maar ook ‘n saagmeule opgesit om die dennebome in sy plantasies te verwerk na kissies vir tamaties. Daarby het hy ook ‘n uitvoerbesigheid gevestig, wat avokados uitgevoer het, onder andere na Nederland in die tyd toe sanksies weens die politiek uitvoere na die buiteland geknou het. Dit het hy vermag deur ‘n vennoot in Nederland te hê in sy besigheid. Daardeur kon hy ook later baie ander boere help om van hulle produkte, soos neute, uit te voer. Deur sy leierskap en betrokkenheid by georganiseerde landbou was hy wyd bekend in die streek en ook in die land. Hy het nie net ‘n kwekery vir avokadobome begin nie, maar was ook een van die eerste lede van ‘n studiegroep wat dié vrugte en die kweek daarvan nagevors het. Hierdie dors na kennis het gemaak dat mens hom bykans nooit sonder ‘n boek in die hand gesien het nie. Hy het nie net baie gelees nie, maar ook graag gereis. Verder het hy dikwels geskryf, veral versies en liedjies vir sy kinders en kleinkinders. As mens sy vriende en familie vra oor Oom Piet, Die CVO Skool Zoutpansberg buite Louis Trichardt het drie nuwe personeellede in hul midde dan word woorde soos liefdevol, streng, integriteit, verwelkom. Van links is mej. Melanie Lee (Graad 5 en 6), mev. Antoinette Pretorius (Graad 8) en lojaliteit en ‘n hele rits ander, positiewe kwaliteite mej. Anne-Marie Fick (Graad 5 en 6). Die skool spog tans met ´n personeel van 16 onderwysers, dikwels genoem. Een ding wat egter uitstaan, is wat beteken dat daar een onderwyser vir elke vyf leerlinge is. tasbaar uitgeleef het. Sy vriendskap met prof. Koos van Rooy was vir hom kosbaar en die wedersydse respek tussen die twee was duidelik sigbaar. Hy was ook baie betrokke by die kategese van die NG Kerk Soutpansberg-gemeente, waar hy vir meer as 25 jaar ononderbroke op die kerkraad gedien het. Oom Piet is Saterdagoggend vroeg op Piesanghoek begrawe, langs sy seun Mattewis, wat ‘n aantal jare gelede oorlede is. Die plegtigheid is waargeneem deur prof. Koos van Rooy, waarna ‘n roudiens vir hom gehou is in die kerk deur dr. Phillip Venter. Sy gesin het hulle dank en waardering uitgespreek teenoor almal wat hulle ondersteun het in die afgelope tyd met Oom Piet se siekte en afsterwe.

Die onverwagte dood van oom Pieter Roux (72) op die dag van sy huweliksherdenking het familie en vriende geskok. Oom Pieter het die oggend sy kleinkinders, Dawie en Tertius, by die skool afgelaai en daarna nog lekker met die familie gesels, wat almal op dieselfde perseel in Louis Trichardt woon. Dit was 8 Februarie, die huweliksherdenking van oom Pieter en tannie Drika, wat 48 jaar gelede op Standerton getroud is. Oom Pieter het van rugpyn gekla. Later die oggend het die dokter nierstene vemoed en hom Polokwane toe gestuur, vergesel deur sy eggenote en seun en skoondogter, Dawie en Chantel. “Ons het die kinders by maats afgelaai en gedink ons is gou terug. Was ons skok groot toe ons in Polokwane uitvind dat my pa ‘n aneurisme in die aorta in die buikgedeelte het en dat daar geen vaskulêre spesialis in Limpopo is nie. Ons het begin om te reël vir ‘n ambulans na Pretoria,” vertel Dawie, wat sy ouers se enigste kind is. Oom Pieter is egter om 17:15 oorlede.

Pieter Roux is op 2 Julie 1939 in Vrede in die Vrystaat gebore. Interessant genoeg was hy vir ‘n rukkie op Vivo in die laerskool. Hy het by die Middelburg Tegniese Skool gematrikuleer. Op skool was hy ‘n uitstaande atleet, wie se 400m rekord nog tot in die tagtigerjare bly staan het. Van 1959 tot 1964 was hy in Vanderbijlpark in die polisie, waar hy die Sharpeville onluste belewe het. Hy het as fabrieksvoorman by Vaal Potteries gewerk tot en met sy aftrede in 2001. Daar op Meyerton was hy altyd betrokke by klubrugby en het op die bestuur gedien. In 2002 het die egpaar na Louis Trichardt verhuis. “Cost incurred amounts to wasteful expenditure” The Democratic Alliance is concerned about the wasteful expenditure regarding costs incurred in the case between the Makhado Municipality and the Soutpansberg Ratepayers Association. An agreement was reached outside of court, followed by a High Court order on 3 February to reconnect the electricity supply of members of the association. “It is unfortunate to have to say that the lawyers of the municipality had to settle as a result of not being properly prepared.
The Makhado Municipality’s paper work was not in order to state their case,” said DA councillor Brian du Plooy on Monday. The legal costs already incurred, as well as possible future costs if a cost order should be obtained against the municipality, amounts to wasteful expenditure, says the DA. The DA demands that the municipal manager, Mr Shadrack Tshikalange, and the CFO, Mr Hitler Maluleke, be held personally accountable for the loss of
taxpayers’ money. “Both these officials are incapable of fulfilling their daily job descriptions and need to be removed. The finance department is in chaos and this reflects directly on the poor management of service delivery within the Makhado Municipality,” Du Plooy said. He added that officials appointed or deployed in the Council needed to be held accountable and needed to listen to the problems and demands of voters.

Ons is ook geregtig om te weet watter maatreëls ingestel word om boere te beskerm, en om moordenaars aan te keer en te vervolg. “Ons kan al die gesteelde vee terugvind, en ons kan alle renosters beskerm, maar as die boere wat met hulle werk, vermoor word, is daardie aksies absoluut futiel. Die regering moet sy prioriteite vir ’n slag regkry, want ons kan nie voortgaan om boere teen hierdie tempo te verloor nie. Sover ons weet is sewe landbouers sedert die begin van die jaar vermoor. Dinge kan nie so aangaan nie,” sê mnr. Meintjes. Gedurende Januarie het TLU SA gevra vir ’n dringende gesprek hieroor met die Kommissaris van Polisie. “Sedertdien is nog niks van hulle verneem nie. Ons gaan die saak nou opvolg met die polisie, want ons kan die saak beslis nie net daar laat nie,” sê mnr. Meintjes.

Base under new command AFB Makhado came under new command with the appointment of Brig-Gen Schalk van Heerden as the new officer commanding. Gen Van Heerden officially took over the reigns at South Africa’s “Fortress of the North” during a change-of-command parade held at the base last Friday. He took over command from outgoing commander Brig-Gen Chris Delport, who was appointed Director of Communication Systems in
Pretoria. The new commander will take control of a base that houses state-of-the-art military training and fighter planes and all the sophisticated equipment that makes them South Africa’s first line of defence. During Friday’s parade, the base’s 3 Air Servicing Unit also appointed a new commander in the form of Col Moses Njomo. He was appointed by Brig Gen M A Phala, the director of the SAAF’s servicing units.

Mthembi too “ill” to appear in court

Stolen municipal computers recovered A male suspect was arrested in connection with the theft of two computers at the offices of Musina Municipality’s finance section. The computers were later recovered at a house where the suspect stays, about 500 meters away from the municipal building. Acting Municipal Manager Pedron Nndwa said the suspect tampered with the alarm system of the municipality and allegedly broke the window to gain access to the office. “Workers were surprised when they came in on Monday morning and realised that two computers were missing. The window was also broken and the alarm system had been
tampered with.” Nndwa said he immediately called the police to report the matter. “We did not just leave it in the hands of the police. We also conducted our own investigations to make sure that the computers were recovered. We are talking about taxpayers’ money and we cannot allow criminals to do as they wish in a public institution like a municipality.” Nndwa says he received information that the suspect was trying to sell the computers to a community member. “The community member already got information that some computers had been stolen from the municipality. He then came to us and we
called for backup from the police and went to the suspect’s house.” He says one of the computers was found hidden in a mielie bag behind the house. “The suspect then pointed to another one that was hidden under the mattress in one of the rooms. It was quite a big breakthrough and we want to warn criminals not to take chances with municipal property, because we will end up nabbing them.” He thanked all involved in the recovery of the computers.
The perjury case against Doris Mthembi, well known for her constant court appearances, was delayed this week because of her ill health. She was due to appear in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on Monday to stand trial in one of the numerous cases that keep on piling up against her. The case relates to an incident in September last year when she tried to open a case of rape against her estranged husband, Goddard Tendani Mugwena. During the trial, which commenced in October 2011, Mthembi claimed that the police had refused to help her. Mthembi’s lawyer accused the investigating officer in the case, W/O Fanie Mynhardt of the police’s Family Violence Unit, of not listening to Mthembi’s account of what had
happened. He accused Mynhardt of only listening to Mugwena’s side. It was during this trial that the case was postponed to Monday this week. On Monday, Mthembi’s case had to be postponed yet again when she failed to appear in court. Because she did not make arrangements with the State, a bench warrant for her arrest was issued by the court. Shortly after the court adjourned, Mthembi’s live-in lover, well-known TV star Joe Ragwala, came to court with a medical certificate. According to him, Mthembi is gravely ill and in hospital, “awaiting an operation.” The medical certificate that he presented to the court said that Mthembi had been admitted to the Tshilidzini Hospital on
13 February due to a “medical illness.” She was also booked off sick until 15 February. The court, however, rejected the certificate, due to its vague description of Mthembi’s alleged illness. On Tuesday, Mthembi herself brought another medical certificate to court, stating that she was in hospital from 12 until 13 February because “she was vomiting.” It also came to light during this visit to the court that her attorney has since withdrawn from the case. Before postponing the matter and cancelling the warrant against Mthembi, the court once again warned Mthembi to get her affairs in order. Mthembi will appear in court again on 28 February, before which time she will have to appoint a new lawyer.

Een van die maniere waarop hulle dié werk bekendstel, is deur spesiale geleenthede soos konserte en eredienste waarin hulle van bekende kunstenaars gebruik maak soos Rina Hugo Toegang vir die optrede is gratis, maar daar sal wel ’n kollekte na die tyd gehou word om ’n gedeelte van die uitgawes te dek. MARCH • EBENEZER MILE & 3000M SWIM The beautiful Ebenezer Dam will once
again be the venue for the very popular Ebenezer Mile & 3 000m swim on 18 March. Men and women of all ages may enter this open-water mile (1 609m) swim. The age categories are under 13 years, 14 to 30 years, and 31 years and older. There is also a 3 000m course for SA national “B” championship qualification. The first race is at 08:00 (3000m), followed by the mile event at 10:00 for all female swimmers, with the three age categories swimming together. The main event starts at 11:30 for males - again the three age categories will swim the course together. A short-course development and introduction swim will take place 12:30. Race timing will be will be handled with electronic timing chips worn by competitors. Mile and 3000m entries on www.entrytime. com are R100 and the 500m swim costs R75. Entries on the day will be charged at R125. As always, there are medals, cash and product prizes. Commemoration T-shirts will be on sale on the day, with the prize giving at 13:30. The event will be hosted at the Mountain Yacht Club.

The Munnik Farmers’ Association, in collaboration with the P&L Cycle Club, will once again host their popular Munnik Meerkat Mountain Bike Race on 24 March. Three race options are available, namely a 70km (R140 entry fee), 35km (R80 entry fee) and 10km fun ride (R30 entry fee). Can the old flame be enkindled? I received a phone call from a gorgeous ex-girlfriend who this morning called ‘out-of-the-blue’ to see if I was still around. We lost track of time, chatting about the wild, romantic times we used to enjoy together. I couldn’t believe it when she asked if I’d be interested in meeting up and rekindling a little of that “old magic”. “Wow!” I was flabbergasted. “I don’t know if I could keep pace with you now”, I said, “I’m a bit older and a bit greyer and balder than when you last saw me. Plus I don’t really have the energy I used to have.” She just giggled and said she was sure I would “rise to the challenge”. “Yeah.” I said. “Just so long as you don’t mind a waistline that’s a few inches wider these days! Not to mention my total lack of muscle tone ... everything is sagging, my teeth are a bit yellowed and I am developing jowls like a Great Dane!” She laughed and told me to stop being so silly. She teased me saying that tubby, gray haired, older men were cute, and she was sure I would still be a great lover. Anyway, she giggled and said, “I’ve put on a few pounds myself!” That’s just about when I told her not to bother phoning me again and put the phone down.

Our world today would have us to think that we are at the mercy of whims of fate or harm (the sum of a previous life’s actions determining one’s destiny in the next life), and that God has no interest in or any power over devastating catastrophes or natural disasters. Secular singers have reinforced this belief by telling us, “Que Sera, Sera; what will be, will be!” When deep waters rise or sudden reversals in health or prosperity occur, the Bible assures us that we may find consolation in Christ knowing that with God in control of the universe, there is never a hint of anything being incidental in our life. Someone has said: “God is too loving to be cruel and too wise to make a mistake!” Scripture affirms that as the object of His eternal love and purpose, believers are not left to the whims of fate. In Romans 8:28 we find a timeless balm of Gilead that has enabled God’s people to endure when mysterious and bewildering events transpire in their lives. One might rightly ask: “So, what is the value of knowing that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him”? God’s timeless Word is what enables believers today to understand the place for trials and suffering in their lives by providing them with a meaningful framework to evaluating what is happening to them. When looking to Christ in the Scriptures, believers are assured that life is not a cruel joke, but rather a revelation of God on display at all times. Organisation promotes female fellowship Occasions for fellowship among women are always welcomed. If the fellowship is combined with deep inner values, learning skills and impacting the community, it is a meaningful, winning recipe. Beautiful Feet in Louis Trichardt offers just that. “The concept of Beautiful Feet was impressed on me by the Lord,” says the founder of the organisation Pastor Dalene van Niekerk. In the short time since its launch at Agape Christian Centre in November last year,
Beautiful Feet has expanded to be cross-denominational and cross-cultural. “The Beautiful Feet women nurture their friendships and bring the gospel of good news to all. Their hearts and lifestyles are established strongly in the Word of God. We believe God to multiply the Beautiful Feet groups to touch our towns, cities and nation,” says Van Niekerk. The co-founders of the organisation are Ms Susan Caruto and Ms Madelyn Stoltz. Beautiful Feet has 12 groups so far. Each group meets for
friendly, informal fellowship once a month under the guidance of two or three co-ordinators. Each group selects its own area of focus concerning skills and projects to reach the hearts of others in the community. Currently, the involvement is with the aged, with pre-primary schools, with a secondary school, rural churches and reaching out to various institutions. Scores left homeless after storm hits
A house at Maphophe village, its roof blown off, in the aftermath of the disaster.
Scores of villagers from Vhembe and other parts of Limpopo were left homeless and stranded after a heavy storm left a trail of destruction over the weekend. By Monday, in Vhembe alone, about 320 households were confirmed as having been affected. At the time of our going to press, disaster teams from Vhembe and Thulamela and a team from the Red Cross were still busy assessing the situation and the possibility was high that the number of those affected could rise. In Vhembe, the villages of Botsoleni, Maphophe and Makahlule were the hardest hit. Churches, schools and houses had their roofs blown away during the storms. One of the affected family is the Sithole family of Maphophe in Malamulele. Mr Meshack Sithole, who is still nursing injuries in hospital after being hit by corrugated iron, said life would never be the same for
him. “I saved for years to build my dream house, but I saw my dream crumbling down in the wink of an eye,” said Sithole. He is a married father of three children and said they were outside the house when the storm and heavy wind started. They went into the house, thinking that it would subside, but it became worse and the wind “started to pull the roofing out”. He said they took the children to a neigbour for safety and he and his wife returned to the house. “While inside the house, we could sense danger and we decided to go outside, but I was struck by corrugated iron,” said Sithole. Another family that was hard hit is the Chauke family of Botsoleni. Ms Nomia Chauke (43) was killed after being struck by lightning and her
children are now facing an uncertain future. She was struck by lightning while coming from fetching firewood. In another lightning tragedy the same day, the 24-year-old Constance Novela of Mphambo also died after being struck by lightning, while sitting with her husband and her one-year-old baby. The head of the disaster committee in the Thulamela Municipality, Mr Elias Chavalala, who accompanied the acting executive mayor, Cllr Lucas Manyuwa, on a tour to the affected area, said several people were injured, seven churches were damaged while 307 houses were damaged during the storm. Manyuha said they would approach the province and request that the area be declared a disaster area. He said they had already handed over tents and food parcels to the affected and would continue to assist the affected families.

Vanjaar se Makhulu 5 bergfietsuitdaging buite Polokwane op 11 Februarie was buitengewoon uitdagend ná swaar reën die roetes bykans onbegaanbaar gemaak het. Deelnemers het na die tyd gespot dat hulle eerder die bergfiets-afdeling moet herdoop na die modderfiets-afdeling. In die 45km-bergfietsren was daar heelparty ryers van Louis Trichardt wat onder die top 10 klaargemaak het. CP van Wyk (foto) het die beste presteer deur algeheel tweede te eindig in ‘n tyd van 02:10:01. Hardus Joubert was 4de in 02:22:09 en Ayerton du Rand 7de in 02:24:50. Foto verskaf.
