Serial killer at Itsani?

By Elmon Tshikhudo Residents of Itsani and the surrounding villages believe that a serial killer could be on the loose in the area. This follows the discovery of the body of a woman, aged 22, who was found floating in a dam last Monday. The circumstances leading to her death and subsequent discovery at the dam are still sketchy. At least five bodies have so far been found dumped at different locations around the village. This led residents of the village to believe that a serial killer targeting young women could be on the loose in the area. Those targeted are alleged to have been raped before they were killed and dumped. A fortnight ago, the semi-naked body of a young woman was found in an irrigation ditch next to the Matieni irrigation scheme. She seemed

to have been raped before she was thrown in the furrow as her lower body was naked and she had serious head injuries. She was identified as Thilivhali Mandiwana (26), who had a history of disappearing from home with friends and spending days away. Last Monday, the community of Itsani was once again in shock, when the body of another young woman was found in a disused dam in the middle of the village. She is believed to have been killed somewhere else and dumped in the dam. She was also semi-naked as she was left wearing only her panties, red shoes and a brown top. There were no signs of injuries and she was later identified as Thalukanyo Lambani (22) of Thohoyandou P East. According to information at our disposal, she was last seen drinking with friends at some local taverns. It is alleged that, at the close of business, she got a lift and that was the last time
she was seen alive. Many voiced concerns that the killing of women in the area might be a clear signal that a serial killer is at work in the area. Some say that a wealthy businessman could be behind the luring of the women for sexual favours and that he ends up killing them and dumping them in the village. “We are having a big problem here. Day in and day out, bodies are found in this area and it seems that women are being targeted. We are becoming very suspicious that a serial killer could be on the loose here. The modus operandi used looks the same here and mostly our sisters are victims. Why should people lose their lives this way while we fold our arms and look on? We should all stand up and hunt the killers until they are exposed and do not have any place to hide in this village,� said an angry community member, who preferred anonymity. - Continues on p2

Singer stabbed to death at spaza shop The life of 22-year-old singer Mpho Gift Sithole was brought to an abrupt end after an Ethiopian spaza shop owner allegedly stabbed him in the heart with a knife last Friday. “A man yanked my nephew's arms behind him and another one rushed over with a knife and stabbed him in the heart,” the deceased's uncle, Mr James Sithole, said during Limpopo Mirror’s visit. happened at Rivoni, outside Elim. Sithole said Mpho went to collect the outstanding balance from an Ethiopian businessman, after he had sold him a laptop computer some two months ago. It is alleged that he found the spaza shop owner with another Ethiopian man. “He refused to hand over the money he owed and an argument started,” Sithole said. “They fought for some time.” Sithole explained that things turned awry when the other man grabbed Mpho's arms and yanked them behind his back. “The shop owner took a knife and stabbed Mpho in the heart.” People alerted Mpho's family about the incident. When Sithole got to the scene, he found his nephew lying on the ground, fighting for his life. “I picked him up in my arms, so we could rush him to Elim Hospital,” he said. “Unfortunately, he passed away in my arms. It's very painful to lose a child in this brutal, senseless fashion.” Residents got so angry that they chased the suspect who stabbed the victim in an effort to avenge the death of a fellow resident. “He came all the way from Ethiopia to kill this young man!” cried Tintswalo Makhuvela of Mbhokota village, who happened to be at Rivoni at the time. “This is not good.” Mpho's mother, Khensani Sithole, said: “I was still expecting my son to realise his full potential as a singer and a young man in the community. Oh, my heartache is so unbearable!” However, the supect managed to evade the community's wrath and went into hiding for nearly three days. His relatives and people from Ethiopia cooperated with the local community and the police, so they promised to find the fugitive and hand him to the police. The spokesperson for the Waterval police, W/O Kedibone Mabatha, confirmed that the police had opened a case of murder. “The suspect's friends found him in Thohoyandou and handed him to the Waterval police on Monday afternoon,” he said. “He appeared in court on Tuesday and his case was postponed to 21 October for further investigation. He remains in custody.” It is said that the suspect, Mr Wome Eduako (23), has neither permanent place nor property in the village. He is only renting a space, where he runs the spaza shop. The police said that, so far, they only knew about one suspect (Eduako) involved in the case, and not two. The spokesperson for the Njhakanjhaka Traditional Authority, Mr Vicky Muvhali, said the council requested the community to refrain from viewing the incident in a light that could lead them to chasing all Ethopian residents from the village. “An individual allegedly committed a crime and not all Ethiopians,” he said. “The friends and relatives of the suspect have already offered to assist with funeral and burial costs, a gesture which the family and the council welcomed.” Mpho will be buried on Saturday at Rivoni.

Double murder shocks town’s residents Several gunshots shattered the tranquillity of a local residential area that was just about to settle in for a quiet Monday evening. An assailant had forced his way into the Makhado (Louis Trichardt) home of Ms M D Madiba (34) in Duiker Street, gunning her and a male friend down in cold blood. The friend was later identified as Mr Victor Mthokozisi Radebe (36), well-known as the assistant manager of Louis Trichardt Spar. The incident happened around 18:30. Neighbours recall hearing seven shots and seeing the suspect flee the scene in a vehicle at high speed. The Makhado Police confirmed that Radebe and Madiba were seated in the lounge, watching television, when they were attacked. “The suspect went straight to where the victims were relaxing, watching TV, after which an argument ensued and the suspect took out a 9mm pistol and fired shots at them,” said police spokesperson Const Irene Radzilane. A bullet reportedly hit Radebe in the chest and he was already dead when neighbours rushed to the scene. He was slumped on the coach. Five bullets pierced Madiba’s body. She was lying in
Protests as “fong kong cops” appear in court In one of the most sensational robbery cases ever to have occurred in Thohoyandou, five men, accompanied by the Thohoyandou police, allegedly robbed an Indian businessman in Thohoyandou. It is alleged the five men, masquerading as police, conned the Thohoyandou police into believing they were members of the Hawks investigating a crime in Block F. Unawares, the Thohoyandou police accompanied them to their victim, who had allegedly been robbed in Thohoyandou Block F. At the house, women who were inside refused to open up and the robbers allegedly broke the burglar door before entering the house. The owner of the house was not present and he was called from his work place, whereupon the robbers ransacked his house, taking cash and other valuables from the house before getting back to the police station. That is where they allegedly disappeared with their loot. The men were arrested in Gauteng last week after a complaint by the business-
man. Ironically, the Thohoyandou police allegedly refused to open a case in Thohoyandou, but the case was subsequently opened in Polokwane. The five appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court last Wednesday. The court was packed to capacity, with Indian businesspeople who had been victims of armed robberies in attendance. A group of angry local businesspeople from Sibasa, Makhado and Malamulele protested outside the court with placards bearing messages. They demanded that the suspects not be granted bail. They later handed over a memorandum detailing their grievances to Senior Magistrate Lackson Ramavhale, who promised to take it to the senior prosecutor. At least three robberies by people impersonating police have taken place in the Thohoyandou area and thousands of rands and jewellery were taken during the heists. The suspects are Thabo Obed Mathapo, Morris Khathutshelo Rafumbidamu, Thendo Gregory Motha, Thabiso Saul Molapo and Ivan Mogane. They appeared
in the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Courts last week, where they applied for bail. They were charged with inpersonating a police officer. Due to time constraints, their bail application could not be completed and was postponed to 16 and 17 October. The Thohoyandou police spokesperson confirmed that the suspects had produced documentation to prove that they were from the Hawks. "We were convinced that they were real police and did not hesitate to help them, but this is a wake-up call that we should scrutinize members and their movements," said Malelo. Community leader Ayub Madina said they were tired of crime in Block F. “In September alone, we had 10 armed robberies in Thohoyandou. We are no longer safe in this community and we do not know who will be next. We are at the mercy of criminals, and we feel that if these fong kong cops are given bail, they will continue with their reign of terror. We are worried that the police will arrest criminals and the courts grant them bail or let them walk free,” added Madina.

The man was arrested and had yet to appear in court by the time of our going to press. The suspect was allegedly known to Madiba. According to friends and neighbours, the shooter was her ex-boyfriend and she was in the process of obtaining a protection order against him. This after the man had allegedly assaulted Madiba, tying her up and beating her. In the meantime, friends, family and work colleagues of Radebe were devastated to hear about his death. He had been working at the local Spar for more than 12 years. Funeral arrangements had yet to be finalized for him and Madiba at the time of our going to press as most of their families are either from Gauteng or Polokwane.

"We cannot say that there is a serial killer at this stage, but this might become apparent as investigations continue." On Friday, rumours started doing the rounds that the suspect in the cases had been arrested. This raised the hopes of bereaved families of the victims, who had hoped for closure in the murders of their loved ones. On Tuesday, however, word spread that the case had not even gone to court and the suspect had been freed. This did not go down well with members of the community, who vowed at one stage “to sort out” whoever was responsible for the murders at Itsani. Ms Thihangwi Lambani, the moth-
er of Thalukanyo, said her daughter used to disappear and come back after some time, but she did not want to see her die the way she did. “We were happy to hear that a suspect had been arrested, but now that he had been let free, we do not feel safe and we feel the law is not just at all. We are putting everything in the hands of God, who will take care of the situation," she said. Police spokesperson Major Mashudu said there had been some technicalities that had led to the freeing of the suspect. "This does not mean that the case is over. We have forensic experts who are dealing with evidence that could be linked to him or any other suspect, and people should just be patient for investigations to run smoothly," he said.

12-Year old the new traditional leader of Makonde A 12-year-old boy, Tshinetise Ravhura, was publicly declared the traditional leader of Makonde, a fast-developing village north of Thohoyandou at the weekend. This follows the tragic death of his father, Chief Azwianewi David Mutshinyalo Ravhura, in September 2012. A man of few words, who was loved and respected by his community, Chief Azwianewi David Mutshinyalo Ravhura committed suicide by hanging himself in the storeroom of his palace without leaving a note. He was 49 years old. Tshinetise’s new traditional leadership name is Vhamusanda Vho-Tshedza Ravhura. His ndumi is seven-year-old Anwani Ravhura, whereas the khadzi is Fulufhelo Ravhura (13). The Ravhura chieftainship came into the limelight when they entered the Venda kingship fray as one of the claimants in 2004. They wanted to be recognized by the Nhlapo Commission as the most senior traditional leaders in Venda. Their claim was, however, dismissed by the commission. “Because Tshinetise is still a minor, I have the pleasure to announce that Tshilidzi Edward Ravhu-
ra (49) has been nominated by the Ravhura Royal House as regent (khosi-pfareli) until Tshinetise grows up and takes over the chieftainship. The khosi-pfareli will be assisted by Rudzani Ravhura. Tshinetise must be given an opportunity to concentrate on his studies, so that he can acquire education to enable him to lead this village with wisdom,” said Thovhele Midiyavhathu Kennedy Tshivhase when conducting the installation rituals. Tshivhase indicated that the Ravhura Royal House had approached the Tshivhase Traditional Council, complaining that they needed someone to lead the village after the passing on of the late chief. “It was legally, constitutionally and unanimously agreed by all the concerned parties that Tshilidzi Edward Ravhura will act as khosi-pfareli of this village. His first major task in this village is to make sure that all illegal mining of building sand is stopped with immediate effect. We have no doubt that, through his visionary leadership, Tshilidzi Edward Ravhura will be able to steer this village to its former glory.” He urged the khosi-pfareli to work closely with
developmental structures to steer development in the village. “As a senior traditional leader, I’m very happy that we now have someone who will be able to lead this village with distinction and dedication. The khosi-pfareli should be able to prioritise education and community development projects. If he does not perform as expected, we will remove him and get someone who will put the interests of the community first.” Ravhura royal house family representative Vhavenda Vho-Avhafarei Ravhura said the clan was excited that the dignity of the traditional leadership in the village had been restored. “There were many challenges because the throne was vacant. Musina residents fed-up with crime and corruption Residents of Musina handed memorandums of demand to the Musina police station and the CEO of the Musina Hospital on Friday. The community held a peaceful march from Matswale Phase 9 to the vicinity of the Musina police station, where they handed memorandums to the CEO of the Messina Hospital, Mr George Makuya, and the Musina police’s Col Aifheli Mbedzi. The residents had initially planned
to hand memorandums to the Musina police, Musina Hospital, Musina Local Municipality and local businessman Mr Jayson Rana. The municipality and Rana, however, didn’t pitch up at the designated spot to accept their memorandums. The spokesperson of the Musina Tax Payers Association, Mr Freedom Boikanyo, read the contents of the memorandum directed at the hospital. It appears that a new hospital is going to be built in Musina, and the community felt that they must be informed about the project and all developments. The husband is further enjoined to love his wife even as he loves himself (Ephesians 5:28, 33). These verses give us a better picture of the husband’s relationship with his wife. It is normal for every man to love himself. He spends time working hard in order to take good care of himself. His needs, his desires, his aspirations, his hopes, his body, and his comfort are very important to him (Mack, 1979:31). Scripture says that a man should love and take care of his wife in the same way that he loves and takes good care of himself. He should love her as he loves himself. This is embedded in the Biblical fact that when the two get married, they are joined to each other to become one. She is in actual fact his body – which he should love and cherish.

Pupil pays tribute “to a great teacher” the Limpopo Mirror. My phone rang and the voice on the other side said: “It’s Mr Nedambale here, your former school principal. Please, come and cover the story of our student, Mpho Ratshilumela, who will represent Limpopo in the OR Tambo games in Port Elizabeth.” The following morning, I went to the school and covered the story. Apart from the story, we spent some time discussing the good moments we had had in class. Shortly after attending his funeral at Matangari graveyard on Saturday, I went home and went through my archived documents. Fortunately, I found my Grade 11 school report, which has his neatly scribed signature with encouraging remarks on it: “Good work Dzebu, keep it up.” As an adamant traditionalist, I will always remember him for his love of musangwe, malende, tshikona and tshigombela. I am tempted to agree fully with the late French poet, journalist, and novelist Anatole France, who said: “Good teachers impart good education. Great teachers groom their students to become leaders. Ordinary teachers direct us along the right path, but great teachers inspire us to seek our own path. They encourage us to discover our talents.” I am convinced that Mr Nedambale was a great teacher indeed. Before I sign off, let me remind you of the book of Ecclesiastes, chapter 7 verse 1. It says: “A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death
than the day of one’s birth.” It is true, Mr Nedambale was a great man. His name will appear in a special chapter when the history of Vhembe education is written. I have no doubt that he has peacefully joined the eternal academic school of the late Prof MER Mathivha, Prof Victor Ralushai, E.S. Madima, WMD Phophi, Bob Marwala and Ailwei Rakhumba. The community of Muledzhi outside Thohoyandou, one of the most impoverished communities in the Thulamela municipality, is angry. In the centre of their anger is the local chief, Khangale Phaswana, whom they accuse of bad governance. Recently, angry community members marched to the chief’s dwelling and destroyed a house belonging to him. According to reports, the villagers claim that the house was built with their money. A visit by this paper to the area found residents busy gathering bricks, which they have shared among themselves. The residents have also taken away a communal tent that was kept at the chief’s house. “We have the right to take what rightfully belongs to us. We contributed money towards the building. We no longer have a chief here and are taking back our belongings,” community members said. When we asked about the state of affairs in the village, community leader Peter Mathobo said the village had experienced the worst leadership since Phaswana took over as chief in the area. “We lack all the basic services in this area, because of the leadership here. We do not even have a road, because the chief and the ward representative connive with each other to make us suffer,” he said. He added that her leadership style was “that of greed, where poor community members are made to pay fines for anything. She lacks respect for the community and she is very
greedy.” Mathobo added that another of the worrying factors in the village was the sale of sites in the area. “We no longer have playing grounds for our youth. All the available spaces have been sold, and even the sports ground is about to be sold; our kids will no longer have a place to play,” he added. He said they would approach the higher traditional authority at Tshivhase to intervene as they no longer want to be ruled by Phaswana. “We have decided that we no longer regard her as our chief and the Tshivhase royal family will have to put someone else here because, as far as we are concerned, we no longer have a chief here,” he said. When asked to comment, Chief Phaswana refered all queries to the head of the Tshivhase clan, Thovhele Midiyavhathu Tshivhase. “I have been installed here by Tshivhase to look after his people and I cannot comment much as I have not notified him about the problems here. Please phone him, as he is the right person to speak to,” she said. Attempts to draw comment from Thovhele Tshivhase drew a blank. His voicemail could not take any more messages as the mailbx is full. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Const Avhafarei Tshiovhe confirmed that there had been arrests in connection with the incident. “We arrested people for public violence and malicious damage to property. Investigations are continuing,” she said.

Prestigious award for environmental official An environmental health practitioner of the Vhembe District municipality became the toast of his municipality after winning a national award. Mr David Nemakonde (42) of Lwamondo recently received the coveted Alfred Nzo Environmental Health Achievement Award in Rustenburg.

ner in the category for most outstanding community project. “When we started the project last year, the people of Tshaanda-Tshitandani were drinking impure water from a well. We focussed on how we could purify this natural water and make it fit for human consumption and now people are able to access clean water. It is only a pilot project and, if viable, we are going to implement it throughout the district,” he said. He said the award would motivate him to work even harder and think of other ways of improving the livelihood of people. Mayor Matibe stated that they were very excited “that one of our own has come out with an innovative project that will ease the water problem.”
Truck driver accused of rape A 48-year-old cross-border truck driver appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court last Monday, on a charge of rape. It is alleged that the suspect gave a 21-year-old woman lift at Harare, Zimbabwe, and drove into South Africa with her on Friday. He parked his truck at one of the truck stops in Musina, where he allegedly demanded sexual favours from her. According to information supplied by the police’s spokesperson in Musina, Const Dakalo Ramagwede, the suspect used force to tie the woman onto the inside wall of the truck. He allegedly undressed her, put on a condom and raped her. “She cried out for help, but the suspect had allegedly set the volume of his radio loud and shut all the doors,” Ramagwede said. Ramagwede stated that they had spent the night in the truck. It is alleged that the suspect
got some pornographic DVDs and forced her to watch them with him before he raped her again. The suspect reportedly told the woman to go with him to a local tavern, where he bought some liquor for himself. The woman saw people whom she knew and told them about her ordeal. The police were called and the suspect was arrested, charged with rape and placed in police custody. His case was postponed to 21 October for a possible bail application and further investigation.

A Vhembe mother of four, who recently received an accolade in a beauty contest, has now received a masters degree in education. Ms Israel Mulaudzi of Shayandima was one of 79 people to received masters degrees at the recent Univen graduation ceremony. This is hardly three months after she won the Mrs Commonwealth Congeniality Media and Public Choice award at the Commonwealth beauty pageant in South Africa. She will take part as one of South Africa’s representatives in England in December. She is a teacher at Lurenzheni Junior Primary School at Shayandima. At present, she is busy with a doctorate in education management. The theme of her study is: Challenges facing female managers at their workplaces. Apart from her continuous studies, she is also very active in her church. She is an interpreter at Christian Worship Centre at Maniini, headed by Bishop Courage Madzinge. To the joy of hordes of his fans, Mashudu Nematoka has finally released his highly anticipated album, Lufuno a si Thendara. Limpopo Mirror caught up with the Gauteng-based Nematoka of A Huna Damu Li si na Ngwena fame in Makhado. He had come to Limpopo last week to perform at a wedding. Lufuno a si Thendara is a song which slaps your mind with its poetic lyrics and disco-like sound. He tells his listeners to understand that love is not a tender: “Many people think that love is like a tender and forget that any tender expires when the work has been done. A tender is also based on a contract, which is also limited to a certain duration or scope, and has conditions which the contractor must abide by. That contract can also get terminated.” Nematoka sings that love “vibrates” like a mobile phone inside the pocket. Only the holder of that phone will hear or feel the vibration of the gadget. “You must allow love to vibrate in your heart,” he echoes his lyrics. Nematoka doesn’t leave his listeners behind by changing his style. “My style is unique and I won’t alienate my fans with something else,” he said. “I remain Mashudu Nematoka whom they have known all these years. On this album, he also urges wives to respect their husbands because it is the only muti to keep marriages stronger and healthy. Nematoka is known in Limpopo as the ‘king of weddings’. “If you invite me to perform at your wedding, your marriage will last forever,” he said. “I don’t think a marriage ceremony will be complete without Mashudu Nematoka.” In the song Vho Nakesa, he pays tribute to African women for their beauty. He hints that they must feel comfortable to be in their skin and stop listening to words of discouragement. Artists in the music industry have found a saviour in the person of young and ambitious woman who has sworn to promote performing and recording artists at all costs. Denga Pearl Nephawe, popularly known as ‘Rita Dee’ to thousands of fans, has created a popular brand in Limpopo, Rita Dee Entertainment (RDE). She explained to Limpopo Mirror that artists had the same problem every weekend, where organisers would book them and not pay them or do false advertisement. “I felt I was the only one who could assist my friends and other upcoming artists who had fallen victim to promoters who abused them,” she said. “I wanted all these artists to actually live their dream and make something out of their talent.” So, around 2012, she registered a marketing and promotions company with the vision of putting local artists on the African map.
“It all started with passion for music inspired by my lifestyle,” she said. “I was always hanging out with most of my friends who are musicians. Every weekend, we attended different events, so I used to tag along.” Rita Dee is one woman who formalised the successful talent of Makhadzi, as she worked with her on her fourth album, Muhwalo uya Nndemela. This album went viral in a week. “We will be releasing Makhadzi’s first professional DVD on 28 November,” she said. She recalled that she was always the standout child in her family, always made a lot of noise and played like a boy. “I studied fashion design with Vhembe FET College, but I felt that was not my industry, so I switched to music,” she said. Rita Dee was also a columnist with the now-defunct Makoya youth magazine, where she wrote gossip. “That column created a lot of hype in the Venrap industry,”
she said. “I even had it on Radio Univen fm’s Breakfast show on weekends and it was all that rappers would sing about.” She explained that some people hated her because of the job tag of a gossip journalist. “But others loved me for giving Venrap a twist; as you know, there is no such thing as bad publicity,” she said. “It’s better than no publicity at all as long as every fact written is nothing but the truth.” She singled out Cornerstone’s Vhahangwele ‘Ngereza’ Netshifhefhe as one of her mentors. “I believe we don’t stop learning in life,” she said. When asked to describe herself, she said: “I am entertainment. Bursaries for disadvantaged pupils The Vhembe District Municipality is awaiting applications from disadvantaged students in the Vhembe region who want to further their studies after matric next year. Executive Mayor Tshitereke Matibe’s office has set aside R3 million in bursaries to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds. “This is in response to the needs of the community we serve. We want to assist students to further their studies at institutions of higher education in South Africa,” Matibe said. The bursaries cater for tuition fees, books and accommodation. He said they were aware of the fact that there were many needy children in the district. “Eligible learners should be residents of the Vhembe District Municipality and should show consistency in good academic performance. Their parents should be
unemployed or classified as indigent and learners must be either in Grade 12 during this current financial year or have passed their Grade 12,” he added. The bursary covers the field of studies focusing on qualifications in administration, hydrology and water management, environmental, disaster and waste management, as well as regional and town planning. It also covers several qualifications in engineering, finance, tourism, agriculture and information technology. Application forms are available at the help desk of the Vhembe District Municipality and at the local municipalities of Musina, Makhado, Mutale and Thulamela. Children of councillors or municipal officials are not eligible to apply for this bursary fund. The closing date is 28 November.

Arson attack damages Chief’s house Part of a house belonging to the traditional leader of Ha-Misevhe in the Masia area was damaged extensively in an arson attack over the weekend. Unknown people broke his burglar door and entered his sitting room, where they burnt chairs, sofas and books. Chief Misevhe Mulaudzi (72) of Ha-Misevhe, an area which is highly disputed by the Vhangona and the Masia people, said he and his family were attending the funeral of a relative when unknown people broke into and burnt his house. Only the housekeeper, Mr Morris Khanyi, was at home at the time of the attack. Khanyi, who witnessed the incident, said he heard noises and when he looked through the window, he saw four people going to the other side of the house and later saw that the house was on fire. “It was around two in the morning and I could not figure out who they were, as it was dark. I was peeping through the window and I was dead scared, thinking that they would come for me,” said Khanyi.
Chief Mulaudzi said he was not cowed by the burning as he knew why they had decided to burn his house. “I am a traditional leader here, put by the Masia royal house to look after the people, and I won’t shy away from the responsiblity entrusted to me by Thovhele Nthumeni Masia. I am in charge of my people here and have to serve their interests,” said Mulaudzi. Recounting the events leading to the burning of his propperty, Mulaudzi said they had woken up the previous morning to find that all the streets had been barricaded by stones “put by faceless people”. He added that there was a serious land dispute. “This area belongs to Thovhele Nthumeni Masia, but there are members of the Vhangona tribe who have a big interest in this area and are disputing this fact,” said Mulaudzi. Mulaudzi said a march had been planned for last week by his people to confirm that the land belongs to the Masia people, but it could not take place as the MEC who was to receive a
memorandum was not available. “We have postponed this to the 17th of this month and we are not surprised this is happening. We are a peaceful people and we will not attack them but do our things the legal way, and we know the law will declare who the rightful owners of this land are, “ said Mulaudzi. The senior traditional leader of the whole area, Thovhele Nthumeni Masia, said it was true that there were people who were trying to undermine his authority. He added that there was a serious invasion of his land by “faceless leaders”. He also mentioned the march that will take place today (Friday). “It will be a peaceful march against this land invasion and we are going to hand over a memorandum to the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs at Cogsta’s regional offices in Vuwani.” Vuwani police spokesperson warrant officer Elijah Malatji said they had no record of the arson incident as it had not been reported to them.
Career exhibition for schools at Madabani Pupils from different secondary schools in the Sinthumule and Kutama area attended the Science Tube event held at Madabani last Friday and Saturday and were guided in their efforts to choose a career path. Mr Livhuwani Masevhe of Science Tube told learners that “the high failure rate is caused by a lack of proper career guidance. I want the learners to get information and advice on a spectrum of opportunities for higher learning and skills development to help them make their career choices,” he said. During the event, learners were provided with information on universities, colleges, course programmes,
financial aid, bursary schemes and training opportunities. “We found that many pupils do not have access to information on careers. That is why many of them do not know which career they should follow after completing matric,” he said. Science Tube advises pupils and also tries to help raise the academic standards in schools. “It is very important to take regular breaks from studying and use that time to go for a walk or play a sport or just sit outside,” Masevhe said. He further advised pupils to have a study timetable that states when and what they will be studying. “It can help you
feel more organised and more at ease. Also make sure not to try and memorise and parrot-learn everything, but instead strive to actually understand subjects. Healthy eating habits are a priority during the exams,” he said. Charmie Lishivha, a Grade 12 pupil at Sinthumule High, said pupils should not choose careers because of peer pressure. “I think choosing a career must be an individual’s own decision. Pupils must also consider their hobbies and other things when they choose careers. They must remember that choosing a career is a decision they have to live with for the rest of their lives,” she said.

had to face charges of malicious damage to property. Last Wednesday, he was released on R5000 bail. He will return to court on the 21st of this month. Ramulongo, a resident from Mauluma village, apparently clashed with traffic officials on Sunday after being caught speeding. He was allegedly driving 80 km/h on a road with a 60 km/h speed limit. When the traffic cops pulled him over, he was invited to check the reading on the camera. Ramulongo allegedly became furious and started swearing at the traffic cops. The traffic officials tried to calm him down and explain to him why he was stopped, but their advice was ineffective. Ramulongo apparently got so angry that he smashed the speed camera. “We have opened a case of malicious damage to property,” said Siloam police spokesperson W/O Edward Tharaga.

The Makhado Municipality has made good on their promise to replace vandalised and stolen traffic signs in town and for this they need to be complimented. The past year, vandals have targeted traffic signs, especially stop signs, on numerous occasions. The hardest hit streets were Eland and Munnik Street. That week, almost all stop signs at intersections in Eland Street were replaced by new signs. Residents near the Acasia and Eland Street intersection (photo) were especially relieved, since the absence of stop signs there have caused several accidents over the last couple of months. Noticeably, the metal sign posts were replaced with wooden posts. Earlier this year, municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi indicated that this would be done as criminals started removing the metal posts to sell as scrap metal. In addition to traffic signs’ being replaced, pothole repair activity can also be seen all around town.

A young attorney from Makhado (Louis Trichardt), 26-year-old Mr Peter Muthevhuli, is fast making a name for himself in law circles. Muthevhuli, who achieved a milestone in his life when he was admitted by the Pretoria High Court as an attorney on 1 February 2012, has embarked on motivating the youth to take up the law as a career. He is enjoying the rare opportunity of being of service to the University of Pretoria, who utilises his expertise in the Schools Moot Court project. Muthevhuli believes in empowering the youth and contributing to society. “I call upon all local schools to expose their learners who aspire to be lawyers to participate in the Schools Moot Court,” said Muthevhuli, who obtained an LLB degree from the University of Venda. “The Department of Education, in collaboration with the University of Pretoria, invites all schools to participate every year. It is an extraordinary experience that learners can acquire.” Muthevhuli explained that he was first involved with moot courts since his first year as a law student. “In my final year, I managed to participate in the 18th Human Rights moot court, which was held at the University of Lagos in Nigeria,” he said. “My team partner and I won all four rounds.” He explained that the Human Rights moot court is the largest gathering of law lecturers and students in Africa. Muthevhuli had just returned from the University of Pretoria, where he was a guest of the Centre for Human Rights. He was required to judge the fourth annual Human Rights Schools moot court competition. “Here, high school learners argued an interesting hypothetical human rights case in a simulated Constitutional Court of South Africa,” he said. “I enjoyed spending time with those learners and hearing their interesting arguments.” Muthevhuli is an attorney attached to Kern and Dekker Inc in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). The Tshixwadza community in the Mutale area recently realised that one of their elderly had no stable shelter to call home and decided to help him build a two-roomed house. The mayor of the Mutale Municipality, Cllr Sarah Rambuda, learnt about the project during her recent visit to the community and, together with other community stakeholders, paid Vho-Matodzi Johannes Nemukula (66) a surprise visit at his home. “It warms my heart to see that the community can come together and decide to do a good act of this nature to one of their own,” she said. Nemukula had lived in an unsteady timber shack for many
years. His three children lived with a neighbour, who also happened to be a relative, since there was not enough room for them at home. The visitors, among them Chief Namadzavho Nwedamutsu, were thrilled by the cleanliness which welcomed them into Nemukula’s yard. “This is a hardworking man,” he said. “It shows that if he had a job, he would have worked hard and saved some money to build himself a house. A lack of jobs remains a challenge to most of our people, particularly in rural areas.” The community chairperson, Vho-Mushathama Musweswe, said that
the community’s duty was to restore dignity to each individual to make sure that all people were living in respectable conditions. “We made a call to our people to donate whatever piece or part of building material as far as they were able to do so,” he said. “And the response was great. We have just got some doors and window panes and we will be putting them in place.” Vho-Nemukula thanked the community for showing him the kind of love which affirmed his social belonging in the village. “I couldn’t have done this kind of job on my own,” he said. “Thank you, dear people.”

“Participate in sport and unify the village” - Tshiololi Former school principal and a member of the Tshisahulu Royal Council Mr Zacharia Tshiololi urged the community of Itsani-Tshisahulu to take sport seriously as it brings communities together and
also enhances their health. Tshiololi, Cllr Ntakadzeni Mandiwana and civic member Angeline Mulaudzi handed over medals, trophies and certificates to the participants of the recent day-long sporting
blocks in the village participated. Mulaudzi, one of the organisers of the fun-filled day, said the idea was to unify the community and fight lifestyle diseases. Tshiololi urged the community to participate fully in sport as it is a catalyst to unify the village and also help people look after their health. “This should not be a once-off, and people forget about their health. We need healthy people who can contribute positively in the development of this village. We are also excited that many youths took part, which means that they did not have time to involve themselves in crime and other bad behaviour,” he said. One of the sponsors, Mr Thivhengwi Negukhula of the Township Bottle Store and End Restaurant in Shayandima, said they would continue supporting worthy community initiatives. “We are what we are because of these people. Tshakhuma Na Ndilani FC, proved that they really mean it when they say they are aiming for promotion. They signed the former Kaizer Chiefs and Jomo Cosmos defender, Tshifhiwa Mmbooi (photo). According to the team’s head coach, Mr Mashudu “Coolio” Ndou, it was not easy for them to convince Mmbooi to enter into a contract with them, since the player is still highly in demand. Mmbooi played for Kaizer Chiefs and Jomo Cosmos five years ago before coming back home to join the now-defunct Basel FC. He moved to Rospa United at the beginning of last season. In an interview Mmbooi stated that nothing would please him more than seeing his team gain promotion to the higher division.

More accolades for Benny’s Care? The evergreen Benny’s Care football team has promised to leave no stone unturned to win the national Copa Coca Cola U/15 championship that will take place at the King Zwelithini Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal from today (Friday) to Sunday. Benny’s team manager, Mr Richardt Sidebi, remains positive that his charges will win the tournament. This is the sixth successive time for the school to participate
in the Copa Coca-Cola competition. Under the watchful eye of coach Justice Matloga, they have won the provincial title for four consecutive years. Sidebi said the tournament had become one of the most important events on the sports calendar. "We expect tough matches and want to maintain our winning momentum. We want to make history by being the first Limpopo team to win the national championship." According to him, the team’s
performance in all the matches they had played was excellent, but they must use their opportunities to score goals better. The other schools that will participate in the tournament are Robinvale Secondary (Western Cape), SA van Wyk High (Northern Cape), Slindokuhle Secondary (KwaZulu-Natal), Sikhulile Secondary (Eastern Cape), Clapham High School (Gauteng) and Thlavekisa Secondary School (Mpumalanga).

Themba Sunrise Riders refuse to die Themba Sunrise Riders, who were reduced to 10 men in the first half, braved all the odds and held the pace setters, United Artists, to a goalless draw in the MMK Funeral Services League match at the Lufule grounds on Sunday. The game was characterized by yellow cards. The referee, Mr Kenneth Makondo, flashed seven yellow cards and a red card during the game. Aluwani Masala of Sunrise Riders was the first player to be reprimanded with a card. His infringement was a late tackle on Thomas Makhubele in the 11th minute. Although Masala was warned in the opening minutes of the game, he continued to demonstrate his rough skills. In the 24th minute, Masala did it again. This time around he obstructed Robert Baloyi and the referee gave him his marching orders. Realizing that their scoring chances were slim, Sunrise Riders started to play defensive football and relied mostly on counter attacks. The pattern worked for them as they managed to frustrate the home side. Sunrise Riders threatened to score in the 29th minute, despite all the odds. Given Tshifulani went loose from the left corner and unleashed a volley from just outside the penalty box. The ball missed Stanley Mbedzi of United Artists controls the the goal mouth by inches. Ndaedzo Mutavhatsindi ball. and Robert Baloyi both of United Artists were booked for dangerous play and obstruction in the 37th and 40th minute respectively. The keeper of Riders, Tshifhiwa Rasivhaga, denied Artists numerous sure goals. Vuwani Masakona, the Artists demon midfielder, tried his luck from the 25-meter area. Rasivhaga braved the shot and palmed the ball away for a corner kick. Lucky Siobo was also unlucky in the 69th minute. His close-range ground cutter accidentally hit the keeper’s legs and bounced back into the field of play. Another humiliation for Baroka FC James Maseko was on target with a header after a corner kick by Freddy Sepeng. The goal was a morale booster to the team from the mother city. They continued to create more dangerous moves from behind. Their moves paid dividends when Lawrence Gwangwa snatched the winner in the dying minutes of the game. Things are moving from bad to worse in the camp of Baroka FC. The Polokwane NFD side suffered their second defeat in a row last a fortnight ago, when they lost 1-2 to Milano United at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. Although they were the first to find the net, Baroka could not maintain their lead as their stamina faded with time. Their solitary goal came in the 18th minute via Walter Kutumela. Things turned against them when the visitors from Cape Town started to dictate terms in the last half. United found the equalizer in the 64th minute.

Black Leopards to host New leadership for LFA’s the struggling students Black Leopards will host the struggling Maluti FET College tomorrow afternoon in an important NFD match at the Thohoyandou Stadium. Leopards recently found their rhythm with two consecutive victories, and another win will stabilise their position on the log. They have eight league points from six matches. The students from the Malutis are at present last on the log, with only four points from their seven matches. All last week’s NFD matches were postponed
at the eleventh hour to this week, due to the Bafana Bafana match against the Congo last Saturday. Leopards will pin their hopes on Leonard Ntshangase and Sanele Mkhise for goals, while Rodney Thato and Freddy Dlamini are geared to keep the students’ danger area clean. Leopards’ new signee, Mumuni Abubakar, is likely to be in the starting team tomorrow. Abubakar entered into a two-year contract with Black Leopards last Thursday. The match will start at 15:30 and, according to the spokesperson for Black Leopards, Mr Berry Ramunenyiwa, tickets are only available at Computicket and no tickets will be sold at the stadium. New leaders for the four Vhembe’s local football associations were elected during the past week. Mr Ntodeni Mulovhedzi was re-elected chairman of Mutale LFA. He will be assisted by Mr Derreck Mothibi. Mr Hosea Ntsieni is the secretary and his assistant is Mr Norman Ndou. Mrs Norah Mudzielwana retained her post as the LFA’s treasurer. The other members of the executive committee are: Messrs Joe Malala, Norman Mudau, Peter Nemulodi and Rudzani Manenzhe. Musina LFA is now headed by Mr Theodore Maoka. The other members of the Musina LFA executive committee are: Messrs Donald Sebola (deputy chairperson), Sinkie Matabele (secretary), Levy Sibanda (deputy secretary) and Tuwani Dzhangi (treasurer). There were no surprises in the Makhado LFA elections as Mr Joseph Maphaha retained his
position of chairman. Mr SJ Maluleke will assist him, while the post of the secretary is now held by Mr TP Thaba. Mr Thaba will be assisted by Mr MF Phathela. The other members of the association’s executive committee are: Messrs SJ Tshikosi (treasurer), and MP Rambau and NA Malisha (members). Thulamela Local Football Association’s elections were held at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday. Mr AA Tshisikule was unanimously re-elected the LFA’s chairman. The first deputy chairperson of the association is Mr N Ligege, while Mr AG Mabasa is the second deputy chairperson. The other members of the LFA’s executive committee are: Messrs LA Ramukumba (secretary), Elvis Booi (deputy secretary), Marcus Mukumela (treasurer) and AE Singo, TR Tshipepele, M Tshitake and CV Ramaliba (members).
