Murder accused Freddy Tshikhudo (36) during his court appearance in the Louis Trichardt District Court on Wednesday.

Stop killing us like dogs! By Staff Reporters “We want the missing parts” and “Stop killing us like dogs” are two of the slogans on the placards demonstrators displayed on Wednesday when suspected ritual murderer Freddy Azwitamisi Tshikhudo (38) appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court The local Zimbabwean community showed their utter disgust with the happenings the past month. News broke the past week that the woman, who had been killed and mutilated, was the 36-yearold Rumbidzai Mayere from Zimbabwe. Limpopo Mirror previously reported on the disappearance of this Zimbabwean lady who had stayed in Tshikota. When reporting on the killing and mutilation of an unknown woman last week, the police were asked whether there was any link between the two cases. The family of the missing woman were also contacted to ask them to investigate such a possibility. It eventually turned out that it was the same person.

Freddy Tshikhudo, the suspect in the case, appeared in court on Wednesday for a bail application, but the matter was placed on hold until 29 May. The court and the defence for the accused agreed that the case be postponed after the State prosecutor pointed out that they were still awaiting the post-mortem results. “The State suspects that there might be more parts missing from the deceased’s body, and not only the arm,” said the prosecutor. As was reported in the Limpopo Mirror last week, Tshikhudo apparently entered Elti Café in Eltivillas with the intension of robbing the Indian couple, Hasina Muska Patel (60) and Musha Isap Ali Patel (62) on 5 April. The couple were interviewed on Tuesday by a reporter from the Zoutpansberger, sister paper of the Limpopo Mirror. The still traumatized couple told the reporter more of what had happened that day. Only Mrs Patel was in the small shop when Tshikhudo arrived. He pulled out the arm and tried to scare the old lady when she didn’t want to hand over the money immediately. It appears that the

MURDERED

language barrier caused more confusion, because the old lady was scared and couldn’t understand what the attacker wanted. At the same time a watchful security guard from across the road realised that something was wrong at the shop. He went to help the old lady and overpowered the attacker. Mr Patel, who at that stage was attending mosque, was called and he ran back to the shop. It appears, however, that things went awry after the police were alerted and arrived on the scene. Tshikhudo told the police that the Patel couple had requested him to supply them with a human hand and agreed to pay him R70 000 and give him a motor vehicle. The hand was, allegedly, to be used for muti purposes. The police arrested both Tshikhudo and the Patel couple. On 6 April (Saturday) Tshikhudo led the police to the dense bushes at the mountain at the upper side of Songozwi Street, where a decomposing female body was discovered without the arm, private parts and both eyes. Brutaly killed: The 36-year-old Ms Rumbidzai (Contd on P2) Mayere from Zimbabwe. Photo supplied.

Zim community outraged over killing the case was postponed to a further date. The fol(Contd from p1) Tshikhudo and the Patel couple appeared in the lowing day, however, Tshikhudo had made startling Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on 15 April and confessions to the police, which absolved Hasina Muska Patel and Musha Isap Ali Patel of having taken part in the killing of the woman. Charges against Mr and Mrs Patel were dropped when they appeared in court on 10 April (Wednesday). The Patel couple’s shop was still closed earlier this week and they say that they are too afraid to do business again. They are also still recovering from the ordeal. According to a family spokesperson, Mr Nasir Driver, they spent six days behind bars. During this time they were held in separate cells and did not eat. Hasina just drank black tea while Ali survived by drinking only tap water. Tshikhudo had initially misinformed the police that the decomposing body which was found in the bushes was that of an Asian woman whom he had killed for muti, after the woman’s boyfriend had hired him to do so. The family of Ms Mayere this week said that the police had informed them that they had found a decomposing body in the bushes. “They said there was a bowl of peanuts with some peanuts scattered around her corpse and, as we listened to them, everything related to our child Rumbidzai who went missing while going to town to sell peanuts,” said Mayere’s aunt Ms Evelyn Munyanyiwa. “What happened is not good at all. We are putting all our hope in the hands of the police and God.” Accused: Freddy Azwitamisi Tshikhudo.

The Zimbabwean community in Makhado demonstrated outside the court against the accused´s bail application on Wednesday.

The late Kenneth Mudau who allegedly forced his child to drink glue before committing suicide. The grieving mother, Ndidzulafhi Mathada. By Kaizer Nengovhela

Father forces child to swallow glue A cloud of sadness is hanging around Dopeni village in the Nzhelele area, after a 35-year-old man, Kenneth Mudau allegedly forced his three-year-old daughter, Anza Mathada, to drink glue and die before committing suicide himself last Friday. According to the police, the incidents follow a dispute with his wife over the child’s paternity. It was during the heated argument that wife allegedly told Mudau that the child was not his. “It appears that Mudau, who was apparently incensed by his wife’s revelations, could not contain his anger. He forced his daughter to drink glue and later committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree when he realised the child was dead,” a police spokesperson said. The police have stated that when the mother arrived at the house, she knocked on the door, but there was no response. She discovered the dead child lying in a bedroom. The mother of the

child, Ms Ndidzulafhi Mathada said that the incident has really traumatised the whole family. “We were stunned by the tragic incident,” she said. She added that the family could not afford to bury two people at the same time, because she doesn’t work. The spokesperson for the Siloam police, W/O Edward Tharaga, confirmed the incident. “We are continuing with investigations to try and found out what might have been the cause of the incident. We are appealing to members of the community to continue working with us in the fight against crime,” said Tharaga. The deputy chairperson of the South African Civic Organization (Sanco) in the village, Mr Mathew Masipala, said that the incident came as a shock to the entire community. “We are very concerned about the spate of killings in the area,” he said. Masipala said that young people should always consult social workers, church organisations, Sanco and other structures

when they have problems. Vhakoma Vho-Livhuwani Mavhungu said that he was shocked by the incident. “This is very rare and strange in our community and we condemn it in the strongest terms. It happened in broad daylight and there were people out there who could have stopped the whole incident,” he added. He said that this was the first cruel incident of its kind in Dopeni village. He added that the family should know that the community shared their grief. “We know it is painful to lose loved ones, but we would like the family to accept it as it is. This is not the time to point fingers, but for the family to be more united than ever. We will be with you and give you the necessary support wherever possible,” he said. The family had planned to bury their loved ones tomorrow (Saturday), and they are now appealing to anyone who can help to contact them at 0723183320.

Businessman Yahya Shoeb Jiwa of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) believes that he doesn’t deserve a fine or even a jail sentence. That came to light in a report that a State social worker submitted to the Louis Trichardt Regional Court on Monday when Jiwa (45) stood in the dock yet again. He had already pleaded guilty in July last year to charges relating to restricted activities on a special protected species without the necessary permits. The social worker’s report was for mitigation purposes to lessen the magistrate’s sentence. Jiwa was arrested in February 2011 when he tried to buy two rhino horns from an undercover police agent. Since he pleaded guilty, Jiwa’s defence team has asked for numerous postponements to afford them the time to submit a pre-sentencing report to prove to the court that correctional supervision would be a more suitable sentence. This report was submitted as evidence to Regional Court Magistrate Pat Cloete on Monday. While the social worker read the report aloud to the court, Jiwa sat

in the accused bench, praying under his breath. His wife and two sons were there to support him. According to the social worker’s report, a suspended jail sentence would be just the thing for Jiwa because he is the only breadwinner for his family and a good citizen and community builder. According to the social worker, Jiwa confessed that he had acted out of stupidity and on the spur of the moment when he bought the rhino horns. Jiwa explained that he wanted to sell the horns for a big profit to help his seven-year-old son, who is suffering from a cerebral disease, as well as his wife. After the state prosecutor had taken the social worker’s report under cross-examination, the worker conceded that he had only taken Jiwa’s personal circumstances into consideration and not the law. The State further argued that Jiwa had not pleaded guilty out of remorse but rather because he had been caught red-handed. Under cross-examination, the social worker also admitted that he had omitted the fact that Jiwa was the one who had first made contact with the police agent and

that he hadn’t been illegally enticed into buying the rhino horns. “He [Jiwa] contacted the police agent two weeks before meeting the agent to pay for the horns,” said the state prosecutor. Regarding medical bills, the State reminded the court that Jiwa had offered to pay R100 000 for the rhino horns. After the report was handed in, Jiwa’s attorney asked the court for a postponement, so that he might call two additional witnesses. According to information supplied, Jiwa’s family doctor and the principal of a local school, where Jiwa coaches cricket, will be called to testify.

Students entering the University of Venda. As many as 50 students have been found to have used fraudulent certificates to gain access to the university and the national education student financial aid fund. By Elmon Tshikhudo

Matric certificate fraud exposed at the University of Venda More than 50 students at the University of Venda were left in the cold after it was discovered that they had used fraudulent matric certificates to gain admission to the university and to access study loans at the university. Rumours of a fraudulent matric certificate syndicate at Univen started doing the rounds in 2012. The rumour, which was spoken in soft tones, finally surfaced last week when more than 50 students were identified as having used fraudulent certificates to gain entry to the university. The latest revelation has shattered the dreams of the students, some of whom have already been expelled. Others are awaiting their time to face

the disciplinary committee. The fraud also helped students to access National Student Financial Aid loans, which amounts to hundreds of thousands of rands in losses. Each successful student gets a loan of up to R100 000 a year. Univen spokesperson Mr Takalani Dzaga said they heard about the activities of a crime syndicate on campus last year and immediately launched an investigation, which has now yielded some good results. "We can now confirm that 50 students from different levels of their studies were identified as having used forged matric certificates to gain admission in different schools. Twenty students have already appeared before a disci-

plinary hearing and were dismissed," he said. He said the number could rise as they were busy conducting further investigations which might even go back to before 2010, which means some might have already completed their degrees. He said information gathered suggests that a member of the SRC was the ringleader of the syndicate who had also helped students with their registration. "After identifying the ringleader, we hauled him before the disciplinary committee where he was found guilty and subsequently dismissed. We also opened a criminal case against the student," said Dzaga. He

indicated that the issue of fraudulent certificates is not confined to Univen. "We have tightened our screws and all certificates will be carefully scrutinized. We are also going to double check those who are graduating this year, and if we find that they used fraudulent certificates, we will be left with no option but to withdraw their qualifications." He urged parents to check their children's results and assist them in registration, so that they do not fall into the trap of such syndicates. "Such acts will only damage the students' future as they will never be trusted anywhere, whether it is at work or academic institutions," added Dzaga.

Father gets life for raping daughters A 66-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Dzanani Regional Court last Thursday for raping his two biological daughters. The court heard that the father started raping the eldest daughter at their home in Siloam in 2005, when she was still only 12 years old. He impregnated his firstborn daughter in 2006 and 2008 and two children were born. The sexcrazy father would accompany the daughters to fetch firewood in the nearby mountain, where he would rape them. Police Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi of the Limpopo Police said police investigations revealed that he would also send the mother away, so that he could rape the children. He said

after school he would wait for them at the gate to ensure that they did not have friends. “The rape ordeal was discovered by a local sangoma whom the victim consulted after experiencing vaginal pains. The sangoma, after realising that the girl had been sexually abused, recommended that the matter be reported to the police.” “The father did his best to threaten the daughters that he would kill both of them if they reported the matter to the police, but on May 2012, seven years after the ordeal started, the matter was brought to the attention of the police by concerned residents and the father was subsequently arrested,” said Mulaudzi. Limpopo Provincial Commis-

sioner Lieutenant General Simon Mpembe, who visited the family in June 2012, expressed his happiness after hearing about the stiff sentence. He said justice was served, but he also expressed the wish that those who knew about the rape ordeal would have reported the matter earlier. “When we went there last year, I promised the family and the victims that we would do everything in our power to ensure that the father does not come back to haunt the girls again. I am happy he will rot in jail for his sins and this sentence must serve as a warning to other wannabe rapists that we mean business and we are geared up to root this stigma out of our province,” Mpembe said.

This Emergency Medical Services (EMS) vehicle was involved in an accident with a bakkie on the corner of Krogh and Rissik Street in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) on Monday morning. At the time of the crash, the ambulance was allegedly on its way to a premises in Kort Street, where a person had been hit with a brick. The cause of the accident is being investigated.

Elderly women pay their last respects to the late Fhulufhelo Mphephu. By Kaizer Nengovhela

Late King Dimbanyika’s wife buried Controversy surrounded the burial of the wife of the late King Dimbanyika last Friday when members of the Mphephu royal family boycotted the event. Fhulufhelo Mphephu, wife of the late Tshimangadzo Mphephu (who ruled under the name Dimbanyika) died last Saturday after a long illness. She is the mother of Masindi Clementine Mphephu, who is currently in the midst of a legal battle to determine who the real king or queen of the Vhavenda should be. Thousands of people gathered for the funeral service, which was held at Sendedza. A family representative, Mr Mbulaheni Charles Mphephu, told the mourners that the family had accepted the loss, although it was difficult to cope with. “We understand and accept that Fhulufhelo is gone, but it will be very difficult for us to live without her. It is also

important to acknowledge the community’s support since we received the bad news. God has done his will and there is nothing we can do because the situation is irreversible,” he said. “God took her very soon. We needed her seriously, but we accept her death humbly.” Mphephu said that although they accepted what had happened, it would be difficult to forget that this death had robbed the community of an energetic community member who was full of zeal and courage. “She was one of those women who fought for development in the prime of her life and excelled at everything she did. She will be remembered for her dedication and commitment to the community.” The young Masindi Mphephu described her mother as an angel who brought up her children with love and affection. “It is sad that my mother was buried on my birthday. We

strongly wipe our tears by the fact that she served the Lord every minute of her life. God has done his will and ours is to accept,” she said. She was sad about the fact that her mother was chased out of the Mphephu kraal many years ago and her house was locked without reason. Another family member, Mr Nyelisani Mudau, said that they had made every effort to contact the Mphephu royal family through Vho-Makhadzi Mphephu Ramabulana to engage them in burying Fhulufhelo as the proper customs require, but they didn’t respond. The funeral arrangements were only finalised last Wednesday. “We are so disappointed by the way we were treated by the royal family of Mphephu,” said Mudau. He said that the kingship battle should not prevent the royal family from burying a family member.

Zimbabwean hawker identified as victim The Makhado Police have confirmed the identity of the woman who was killed in a muti murder and whose decomposed body was found last week in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). According to local police spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike, the woman was the 36-year-old Rumbidzai Manyere from Zimbabwe, who was staying in Thsikota at the time of her death. She was reported missing on 15 March.

“The 38-year-old suspect [Freddy Azwitamisi Tshikhudo] who was found with a human arm and is currently facing a charge of murder is believed to be the one responsible for her murder,” said Sadike. Tshikhudo appeared in the Louis Trichardt District Court on Monday and again on Wednesday for a bail application. His case was, however, postponed once more after the State prosecutor informed the court that a detailed post-mortem report was

needed because it would seem that more body parts were missing from the victim than initially thought. Tshikhudo’s attorney agreed to this and his case was postponed to 29 May. During Tshikudo’s court appearance, friends and family of Manyere protested outside the court building. They demanded that Tshikhudo not be released on bail. He will remain in custody until his next court appearance.

Word Riders bring a message of hope Hundreds of Grade 7 pupils from rural schools in Limpopo stood in absolute awe this week as they were handed their own Bibles as part of the Bible Society of South Africa’s third annual Word Riders motorcycle tour. One of these schools was Muthuhadini Combined School in Elim. There was much excitement at the school on Monday morning as the group of motorcyclists roared into the school premises. With them, the Word Riders brought a message of hope and, upon being handed their own Bible, many Grade 7 pupils

stood in absolute disbelief as they would not be able to afford a Bible under normal circumstances. The need for Bibles became even more evident when some of the teachers at the school also asked if they could be given a Bible. The week-long Word Riders tour began on Saturday (13th) when 31 motorcyclists left Bible House in Kempton Park, with stopovers at towns and villages not only in Limpopo but also in Mpumalanga. In total, 1 700km will be travelled with 2 000 Bibles, as well as booklets explaining how the Bible should be read, being distributed to the

Grade 7 pupils at 31 schools. On Monday, six rural schools were visited. According to the Bible Society’s communications officer, Mr Leon Steenkamp, who accompanied the Word Riders during the visit to Muthuhadini, the donation of the Bibles was made possible by the Bible Society’s Bibles for Grade 7 Learners Project, as well as funds that were raised by the bikers themselves. Steenkamp invited people who would like to learn more about this tour or who would like to become involved with the Bibles for Grade 7 Learners Project to contact the Bible Society. For more information, Mims Turley can be contacted at 083 255 5765, or email her at biblia@biblesociety. co.za. Every R35 the Bible Society receives helps towards giving a child in need an Outreach Bible. (For dayto-day feedback on the A member of the Word Riders in conversation with some of the children tour, readers can visit at the Muthuhadini Combined School. Staff at Vondwe Primary School bid Daswa farewell during a function in his honour. By Elmon Tshikhudo

“Hard work has never killed anyone” Well-known educator, pastor and motivational speaker Pastor Nkhangweleni Nemukula used his own life experiences to motivate others to work harder. Nemukula, who is also managing two Vhembe education circuits in Mudaswali and Sambandou, was speaking during a farewell function at Vondwe Primary School in honour of school principal Maxwell Daswa. Daswa (65), who worked for 42 years under the Department of Education, was bidden farewell during a function held at Vondwe Primary School where he worked for 14 years. Pastor Nemukula urged all to emulate the good work done by the retiring principal and used his personal examples to indicate that hard work never killed a person. "I have been a hard worker all my life. When I was still working at Tshivhase Secondary, I used to be always at school, working. I have congrega-

tions in Limpopo and Gauteng which I have to look after besides the two circuits that I am managing. I am a living example that hard work never kills,” he said. He urged those gathered to look after the interests of the children, saying that God entrusted them that they should assist and empower them. "We are again encouraging you to work as a team, as a family and to help create an environment that is conducive to learning. A bad learning environment does not only affect results and our health, but the days of our lives," said Nemukula. Mutshindudi circuit manager

Takalani Makakavhula hailed Daswa as a stalwart in education. "We are bidding farewell to a veteran and stalwart in the department. He served the department with dedication for 42 years and his good work is worth emulating,” said Makakavhula. In response, Daswa said it was through the grace of God that he had worked for so many years. "I will never forget the team I worked with. They were dedicated and always strived for the best. I am leaving you with these words: be faithful in whatever you do, work hard and perseverance will help you prosper in life," he said.

Body of border jumper found The body of a suspected border jumper was found floating in the Limpopo River without lips and cheeks by two fishermen on Saturday. “We suspect the man was probably attacked by crocodiles or he drowned and his body was thereafter attacked by crocodiles while he was trying to swim across into South Africa. We are, however, still investigating,” local police spokesperson assistant inspector Chris Ngwenya said. The body was taken to Beit Bridge District Hospital mortuary, pending a post mortem. “As police we continue to warn people against using illegal crossing points as they risk being attacked by crocodiles in the Limpopo River,” Ngwenya said.

Meanwhile, a 44-year-old Musina man was found lying dead in a pool of blood in Matswale Ext 9, in a suspected case of murder. Musina police spokesperson Lieutenant Peter Mudau confirmed the incident, which is suspected to have occurred on Friday night at Matswale Extension 9 suburb in Musina. The body was, however, discovered on Saturday at around 06:00 by local community members, who then alerted the police. Lt Mudau said they had since opened an inquest. He identified the victim as Cephas Mulaudzi, who was employed at a Game Reserve outside Musina. “Mulaudzi’s body had several visible head and chest injuries; an indication that he could have been murdered, “said Mudau.

Family suffer while father waits in jail Life has always been tough for the 16 family members of the Madzive family at Mutonga village near Elim. The family has been the victim of poverty and has had no one to look after it since the head of the family, their father, was arrested for allegedly murdering the 52-year-old Mr Philip Chambeti Bendzani in a suspected ritual attack last year. The incident occurred at Mununzwu Farm (Sweetwaters). It is alleged that some body parts were missing when the body of the late Mr Bendzani was recovered in the nearby bushes. The accused are a local traditional healer (sangoma), Mr Frans Madzive (54) and Messrs Rudzani Shadrack Malange (21), Meshack Mkhwanadzi (20), Lesley Meshack Malange (21), Reynie Abraal (31) and David Mnisi (27). Their case was postponed to 25 April for a bail application. The murderers allegedly re-

moved the victim’s pubic hair and testicles and afterwards burnt his body on the farm grounds. Angry community members allegedly set alight and burnt down the houses of the sangoma, who had been arrested in connection with the murder. All five the houses of Mr Frans Madzivhe were destroyed and most of his belongings perished in the attack. Apart from burning Madzive’s houses, the angry residents allegedly went as far as burning the accused’s goats alive and also removing the eyes of some of them. Family members had to run for their lives during the attack and had to be rescued by the police. They were later accommodated at Waterval in a dilapidated house. Going to bed on empty stomachs is a usual thing for the family as the mothers cannot raise enough funds to feed them. The children go to school barefoot, without any uniforms. When the rain started falling a few weeks

ago, the lives of the children were turned into torment as water got through the roof of their dilapidated house. “We were forced to move into the dilapidated house, because there was no choice. I have seven children of my own and my husband’s second wife has seven children. We do not have any source of income to feed them. All of us are forced to sleep on the floor, because we do not have a proper house and warm blankets,” said Salphina Madzive. “Life is tough in our family and sometimes we depend on sweet potatoes to keep our stomachs full,” she said. The local councillor, Ms Lindiwe Mogale, said she was aware of the plight of the Madzive family. “I am prepared to assist them, because I know they are living below the poverty line. I appeal to Mirror readers to assist this poverty-stricken family because their living conditions are devastating,” she said.

Life has always been tough for the 16 family members of the Madzive family.

There was great excitement at Movhe Secondary School in Piet Booi (Mulenzhe) on Monday, 15 April. The management of Khoroni visited the school to hand over a newly built toilet facility. This project originated in 2012 when Mr Mabannda visited Khoroni, asking them to get involved in community projects. After a visit to the school, it was decided to assist with more than R30 000’s worth of toilets to be built, as the children used pit toilets and also shared toilets with teachers. Khoroni built three female and two male toilets with a basin and running water on each side. There are 190 children and 10 teachers at the school and it was with joy that the children and teachers celebrated their new facilities. Stepfather accused of raping young girl A 46-year-old man appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court in connection with charges of rape on Monday. The crimes allegedly took place between 20 June 2009 and 28 March 2013, where the stepfather allegedly forced himself onto

his 13-year-old stepdaughter. According to the spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Const Munyadziwa Marindi, the suspect had threatened the victim with violence if she told anyone about the sexual abuse. “It seemed that the girl had got to the stage where she felt that

enough was enough and decided to tell her mother about the stepfather who slept with her,”. He said that the victim maintained that the sexual abuse had started when she was only nine. The case against the suspect was postponed to 16 April. He remains in custody.

Thirty young people from poor backgrounds will benefit from the free learnerships offered by Masana Skills Development and Training which started at the beginning of the month at Tshikuwi. The young people will receive intensive training in different fields, such as building and road construction, for periods ranging between 12 months and three years. Mr Nico Muladi, manager of Masana Skills Development and Training, said it had been his company’s vision to empower the less advantaged through the acquisition of skills. “It is better to train them in skills they can use to fend for themselves forever,” he said. He appealed to government departments and companies to make use of the students and give them a chance to use their newly acquired skills. He also thanked the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) for allowing them to train the young people.

Four Zimbabweans robbed Five Zimbabweans on a visit to Musina were robbed of R6 000 and their cell phones at gunpoint by three unknown men who descended on their taxi, which was parked near a local shop. Musina SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Peter Mudau said the incident occurred on Thursday last week at around 05:00 near a local shop. “The victims had parked their car near a local shop while waiting for the outlet to open for business when three men armed with pistols confronted

The humble young man, who stays with his unemployed mother and siblings, said they were in the process of forming an organisation that would promote their interest and working conditions. "We are always having a brush with the authorities, who do not want us to operate here in town. They confiscate the trolleys that we use to transport groceries to the different ranks and pick-up points in this town from time to time. We need to be organised, so that we can speak out in one voice on matters that affect us at the end of the day," he said. According to Jerry, they are a labour force and they need to be united in order to create a healthy working environment and assist each other in times of need. "Business is picking up and we are now able to make R350 on a good day, which puts us on par with other workers, and our families never go to bed on empty stomachs. I used to work under another guy, doing some piece jobs, but there was no money. Now I am my own boss and I sign my own pay cheque," he said. Musina’s pride project now a white elephant Musina’s dysfunctional multimillion-rand monument to incompetence and greed ... This is an expert’s description of the Musina Spirulina Plant - once hailed as an impressive first for Africa. The installation was developed and erected with a government sponsorship of R6 million, for what was hailed as the world’s best commercially produced spirulina. The product, described as superior and unique in various respects, experienced several high-profile professional marketing launches before disappearing from the market. It left a sprawling, elaborate plant with expensive, sophisticated equipment idle and in complete dereliction. The equipment once included a specially imported turbo-rotor drier of more than R1 million which also ground the material into a fine powder, for increased and faster absorption of this health-food supplement made from algae. Enquiries about the present status of the project were initially met with total silence by the Musina Municipality. In the year 2000, the Musina Municipality was among the ben-

eficiaries of government funding for the creation of local economic projects. The municipality received a donation of R6 million and decided on the production of spirulina. The spirulina project was wholly owned by the municipality, through an entity called Zelpy 1903 (Pty) Ltd., controlled by a board of directors, with the then municipal manager, Mr Abram Luruli, as CEO. Luruli said at the time that the idea was to generate income and channel the profits back to the municipality to facilitate other economic development projects to benefit the community at large. During one of several launches of the product, which started with a launch in Sandton in 2007, the then premier of Limpopo described the project as a publicprivate partnership which could become a good role model for the entire country to emulate. In the absence of any response from the municipality to questions about the present status of the project, the international expert who assisted the municipality in the design and development of the production plant during a period of several years, Prof Johan Grobbelaar of

the University of the Free State, was approached. He confirmed that he was informed in 2007 by the municipal manager that his expertise and services were no longer required. This happened after Grobbelaar had also completed the training of an assistant at the plant. The trained assistant afterwards left for alternative employment elsewhere. “I later received reports of increasing neglect and deterioration at the plant. It seems as if the end result is that a multimillion-rand investment which was unique in Africa and had all the potential of an inspiring success story for South Africa, had become yet another statistic of bad management and avarice,” Grobbelaar said. Last week, in a belated response to repeated enquiries, municipal spokesperson Mr Wilson Dzebu confirmed that the Musina Municipality had decided to discontinue the project because it was not sustainable. “It did not bring in anything for the municipality, so it was decided not to continue with the project. At present, the future usage of the site and the equipment is under deliberation,” Dzebu said.

Murder trial of Waterpoort worker resumes The murder trial against a 33-year-old Waterpoort farm labourer resumed in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court last week. It was testified in court that Livhuwani Gilbert Mabada had stabbed a fellow farm worker, Maxwell Mathuthu, and that the victim had died in hospital a few days later. Last Monday, a medical doctor who had treated the deceased testified that Mathuthu had a stab wound on the left side of his chest. The doctor pointed out that the probability was that Mathuthu had been stabbed with a knife and not with a bottle. “I could conclude that the deceased died as a result of stab which caused massive haemorrhage as the post-mortem results indicate,” he said. The defence attorney, Mr Donald Tshimbiluni, wanted to know why the J88 medical report was dated 4 April 2013, while the doctor claimed to have consulted with the client, namely the deceased, on 2 April 2011. “The first, original report went missing and the court requested me to do another one, based on my files (records),” said the doctor. However, on Tuesday, the court read out a statement which had purportedly been written or submitted by the deceased. Mr Tshimbiluni questioned the document’s authenticity and argued that the statement might have been written by the investi-

No more C-sections at Beit Beit Bridge District Hospital has temporarily stopped offering caesarean section operations, following the breakdown of its medical autoclave machine, forcing scores of local pregnant women to travel to Musina and other local towns for the operation. The machine, which is an essential laboratory device that is used to sterilise medical equipment to avoid infections during surgical operations, broke down in January. The local chief medical director, Dr William Busumani, said although they had managed to acquire a new device, the contracted supplier was now delaying in sourcing some of the required components. “The autoclave machine at Beit Bridge District Hospital is not functioning because we are still waiting for our supplier to source some parts from South Africa, which are needed for it to work. The problem is that we have hard water in Beit Bridge, which needs to be purified first. Therefore, if we operate our autoclave machine under such conditions, it would easily get damaged and that would be costly for us to repair,” Busumani said. He said delays in addressing the problem continued to impact negatively on the hospital’s daily operations. “The hospital foots the ambulance

bill to transfer those admitted pregnant women seeking the operation in other towns. That in itself is a strain to us and we urge the supplier to speed up the procurement of the required components,” Busumani said. However, local pregnant women seeking a caesarean section who have not been admitted at the hospital, are forced to use their own funds to be ferried to other towns while others resort to crossing the border to neighbouring Musina. Meanwhile, Busumani said they had also finished refurbishing the hospital mortuary. “It can now accommodate 26 bodies at a given time,” he said. Prior to the latest development, the mortuary had a capacity of accommodating six bodies. However, due to the ever increasing number of unclaimed bodies, mostly unidentified border jumpers, about 60 bodies would pile up, resulting in a constant breakdown of machinery due to the strain on its cooling system. Last year, the hospital received US$2 million for the refurbishment of medical equipment and the procurement of drugs and other medical supplies. The funds were allocated to the hospital by the Ministry of Finance under the Targeted Approach Programme.

Now where can this Makhado be found? When the Makhado Municipality officially refers to “Makhado” it does not really mean “Makhado”. It may refer to Makhado which is now not Makhado anymore but to Makhado which has become Dzanani. Well, not necessarily the Dzanani which you might have in mind, but that Dzanani which became Dzanani when Makhado stopped being Makhado and Dzanani became, well, something else. To clearly distinguish between that Makhado and this Makhado, that Makhado on the other (northern) side of the mountain is now being refered to as Makhado-A, most probably meaning that there is also a Makhado-B, which might be this Makhado or maybe the Makhado on the other side of the Limpopo Border in Zimbabwe, which, of course, might also be referred to as Makhado-C, or the other way round. This delightful alphabetic confusion ( caused by a series of compulsary name changes),

came to light when residents of this Makhado (previously Louis Trichardt) were perturbed to read an advertisement by the Makhado Municipality in last week’s newspaper announcing the proposed permanent closure of a park, described as “Erf 1982, in Makhado-A township Extension 1” for development purposes. Because no street names were mentioned, the big guess was: Which park is going to be developed into what? This advertisement by the Makhado Municipality states that particulars of the application will lie for inspection during normal office hours at office number C001 on the first floor of the civic centre in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), which has at least two parks in Extension 1 but none numbered as Erf 1982. The closest any town map of this (southern) Makhado will bring you to such a number is Erf 1983, situated in Extension 2, adjoining a totally differently numbered erf already fully developed.

Office number C001 (the office of the director: development planning) at the local civic centre can only be accessed through a door announcing that entry is exclusively for staff members. If you as a member of the public do enter on invitation of the advertisement and reach office C001, you will find it thoroughly locked, with no chance whatsoever of inspecting whatever particulars of the application might be lying there. Why? Because the office referred to in the advertisement is not at all in the civic centre in Krogh Street anymore. It is now accommodated in the Noor Centre in Songozwi Street, next to Choppies - where Checkers used to be. Here a friendly young town planner will clarify the secret of Erf 1982, on a neat map of Makhado-A Township Extension 1, being part of an existing park in Dzanani, previously Makhado (on the northern side of the mountain, but still south of the Limpopo).

Sanlam encourages EFT registrations The Sanlam Group has embarked on a campaign to encourage those individual shareholders who still receive their dividend payments by cheque to opt for their dividends to be paid directly into their bank accounts via the electronic funds transfer system (EFT). Says Sanlam Group Chief Executive, Dr Johan van Zyl: “The EFT system is more efficient and secure as well as in line with current banking trends. Cheque fraud is still prevalent and Sanlam’s decision to limit its future dividend payments to EFT only is aimed at ensuring that its shareholders are not exposed to

such criminal activities. Over 243 000 of our 505 000 shareholders are already being paid via EFT and enjoy secure and more efficient banking. “They do not have to wait for the cheque to arrive by post, visit their bank to make the deposit, which may attract service fees, and wait for the cheque to be cleared. We encourage those who have not yet accepted this option to do so,” says Van Zyl. In the meantime, the police will send Ndou’s rifle for ballistic tests to determine if it was in fact the rifle used to kill the buffalo. The police will also investigate whether Ndou could be linked to the killing of a rhino in the KNP. According to information supplied, park rangers found the carcass of a rhino not far from where the buffalo’s carcass was discovered. Ndou’s case was postponed to 4 June. The AFU was created to enable the NPA to execute legal seizure of criminal assets. Recently, they seized the assets of accused Dawie Groenewald, Jacques Els and the former leader of the ANC Youth League, Julius Malema.

Thief with “expensive taste” gets 75 years The police in Thohoyandou have complimented the justice department after a 23-yearold Zimbabwean national was sentenced to 75 years in prison. The man was recently convicted in the Sibasa regional court on eight counts of housebreaking. Midus Masavangeni allegedly terrorized communities around Thohoyandou Unit D, Thohoyandou block G as well as Miluwani

Unit C. The man had expensive taste in household appliances and he specifically stole plasma television sets, laptops, money and cell phones. His thieving trail started around November 2010 until his arrest in 2012. The court heard that the convict and his other accomplices targeted houses with poor security facilities, where they would steal the goods which were

later transported to their home country, Zimbabwe. Through information from community members as well as scientific investigation expertise, police worked tirelessly and finally located the convict; he was cornered and arrested at Maniini just outside Thohoyandou. The Thohoyandou police station management also applauded the house-breaking task team, which worked around the clock to crack the cases. "We are proud of what our police have done in arresting this most wanted criminal and we further encourage others to do the same in their line of responsibility," said Major Mashudu Malelo, Thohoyandou police spokesperson. Mirror briefly spoke to the convict before he was whisked away to prison. During the brief interview, he made a plea to those who might be tempted to be criminals to refrain from doing it, saying that crime doesn't pay. He also made a plea to his colleagues who are still on the run to come forward and hand themselves over to the police as they are wasting their time, because they will W/O Pfuluwani Mudzunga leads the convicted Midus Masavangeni out not be able to evade the police forever. of the holding cells after he was sentenced to 75 years' imprisonment.

Musina’s shelter for the destitute in desperate need of food supplies The shelter of Musina Ministry of Compassion (MMC), where hundreds of dislocated people from neighbouring states find temporary shelter when entering South Africa at Beit Bridge, is suffering a severe shortage of food to assist the people who shelter there at present. The shelter, located in Nancefield in Musina, consists of several large tents served by a kitchen and ablution facilities in permanent structures.

The tents and the permanent buildings were donated by several international organizations with a presence in Musina. The co-ordinator at the shelter, Mr Gilbert Rukamba, says the shelter serves a daily average of 150 people. They are mostly from Zimbabwe, but also from Somalia and Malawi. Rukamba says the shelter is totally dependant on donations. Anybody who can assist with maize meal and/or ingredients for sheba can contact him at 082

043 7004. The tents which must provide shelter are not very effective against cold and rainy weather. The well-organized feeding scheme for destitute people at the AFM El-Shaddai’s Hands of Mercy centre near the central business district in Musina is situated several kilometres to the east of the MMC shelter in Nancefield. Shelter is also provided at the Roman Catholic Church in Nancefield.

Driver fined for helping border jumpers A Zimbabwean bus operator, Bravo Tours, was recently fined R190 000 after the crew was caught with 19 passengers attempting to enter South Africa illegally. This follows a crackdown by the South African government on errant Zimbabwean bus companies who carry travellers without proper travelling documents and smuggling them into the country through Beit Bridge Border Post. The South African government is imposing a R10 000 fine per passenger, according to a section of the Immigration Act that punishes bus operators if they are caught carrying foreigners without travelling documents by imposing heavy penalties on those who fail to comply with the law. Several Zimbabwean bus operators have incurred heavy losses in the last few weeks after being caught on the wrong side of the law. Court news

Bravo Tours is known for operating on the Harare-Johannesburg route. The Zimbabwe Coach and Bus Operators Association has since written to its members, warning them to desist from carrying people with no valid travel documentation. “Kindly be advised that the South African Department of Home Affairs has been issuing notices of fines to all operators whose buses bound from Zimbabwe were found with passengers without passports,” said the association’s chief executive officer, Mr Alex Kautsiro. “We are therefore calling on all operators who have been issued with notices to pay these fines and to bring these to our attention, so that we may lodge a formal appeal with the South African embassy in Zimbabwe and, hopefully, we might have these reversed or reduced,” he said.

“In the interim, kindly advise all managers and bus crews both in South Africa and Zimbabwe to stop issuing tickets to persons not holding legitimate travel documents. Affidavits highlighting that a travel document has been stolen are not going to suffice — be warned,” he said. Mr Kautsiro told Limpopo Mirror that their members had, in the past, been carrying passengers with affidavits from the that they had lost their travelling documents. “The South African authorities want a supporting letter from the Zimbabwean embassy in Pretoria, confirming that the passenger was a holder of a passport. So, possession of an affidavit from the police is not enough as the feeling is that one can secure that affidavit when one has never possessed a passport at all,” said Mr Kautsiro.

Abortion assistant charged with murder The 27-year-old Ugandan man who has been charged with murder after assisting a woman in the termination of her fivemonth pregnancy appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court again on Monday. Juko Moses was arrested in July 2011 after a 29-year-old woman, who had terminated her pregnancy, put the police on his trail. At that stage he was operating an illegal abortion clinic in

one of the back alleys of Makhado (Louis Trichardt). At first he was charged with the illegal termination of a pregnancy, but in January this year the charge was changed to murder. This after the State indicated that they had enough evidence to proceed with a murder charge. The woman, who cannot be identified without her informed consent, responded to one of the many illegal abortion advertise-

ments that are plastered all over town. She allegedly paid R1 000 for five Cytotex tablets, which are used to terminate pregnancies. Her baby died as a result of major complications caused by her taking the tablets. Moses has been in custody since September last year and will remain behind bars until his next court appearance on 18 June, when the case against him is expected to continue.

Tough road ahead of Lidoda duvha if they want to avoid the axe With only five matches remaining before the activities for the current Absa Premiership soccer season come to an end, the future of Black Leopards as a member of the country’s elite league is still hanging in the balance. Lidoda duvha are lying in the second-last position on the log. A quick glance at Leopards’ five remaining fixtures shows that their chances of escaping the chop come

the end of the season are slim. They were supposed to be playing against Orlando Pirates this weekend, but the match has been postponed to a later date because Pirates will be engaged in their CAF Champions encounter against TP Mazembe FC from the DR Congo tomorrow. Orlando Pirates are one of the close contenders for the league title, and for that simple reason Leopards will be lucky if they manage to hold them to a draw. It will be an

away fixture for Leopards. Their last four fixtures will be against University of Pretoria (home), Amazulu (away), Mamelodi Sundowns (home) and Free State Stars (away). Chippa United, who are languishing at the bottom of the log, have a mountain to climb. They still have to play against the second-placed Platinum Stars (away), Ajax Cape Town (home), Orlando Pirates (away), University of Pretoria (home) and Amazulu (away)

before the league activities come to an end. Ajax Cape Town and Amazulu are also fighting for survival. The general manager of Black Leopards, Mr Samuel Khaphathe, is still adamant that his side will not be relegated at the end of the season. He indicated that their target is to win at least three and play to a draw in one of their remaining five matches, so that they can finish their league programme with more than 30 points.

Limpopo Tourism CEO impressed with tourism numbers over Easter The CEO of the Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA), Nocks Seabi, expressed his satisfaction on behalf of the agency, following the great turnout of tourists in the province over the Easter holidays. Seabi said that the tourism industry in Limpopo received its fair share of the pie during the Easter Weekend, with the tourism establishments in the province recording a high occupancy rate. Day visits to recreational facilities proved to be a favourite amongst locals and visiting friends and relatives. On behalf of the agency, Seabi thanked all the people involved,

including the service and hospitality sectors of Limpopo. He urged them to continue spreading their warmth as they welcomed visitors into the province. “We are of the view that this made us good hosts and will result in repeated visits, thereby increasing the economy of the province,” he said. Spokesperson for the agency Kgatla Ntlhekeng said that there had been a decline in terms of visitors to Limpopo Wildlife Resorts (LWR). These LWR resorts include the Doorndraai Dam in Mookgophong, Dinyala in Lephalale, Nylsvley in Modimolle and Rust de Winter Dam

World Book Day celebrated One of the international events on the literary calendar is World Book Day, which will be celebrated next Tuesday (23rd). In Makhado, the activities will be held at the Makhado public library on 23 April, at 14:00. The project is coordinated and hosted by Guyo Book Services. “We invite learners and parents to attend,” said Guyo manager Vho-Maano Tuwani. “World Book Day also forms a very good platform for interaction among learners from different schools, and we discuss and read excerpts from books.” One of the speakers is Mozam-

bican-South African writer Nadja Manghezi, who will speak about and read from her newly published book, The Maputo Connection. At least the first 10 people to pitch up will be given a novel, The Rich Man of Pietermaritzburg, by Sibusiso Nyembezi. This classic was originally authored in Zulu, and was translated into English by Sandile Ngidi. The South African theme for 2013 is “In books I find ...” For more information, those interested in attending World Book Day can contact Guyo Book Services at 015 516 0897.

in Rust de Winter. Ntlhekeng said that resorts had recorded 5 538 visitors this year, compared to the 10 403 visitors last year during the same period. He said that this was largely due to the flood damage that the resorts had experienced this year, which led to the closure of some of the biggest “cash cows” in the province. Seabi said that the LTA was working around the clock to ensure that

these resorts were brought back to full functionality, so that visitors and tourists could enjoy their favourite holiday destinations. He concluded by expressing his heartfelt condolences, on behalf of the agency, to the families and colleagues of the five SANDF members killed in a helicopter crash in the Kruger National Park recently. Dynamos and Cosmos in dull draw Even though Dynamos had acquired the services of the former Black Leopards and Mpumalanga Black Aces striker Walter “West” Ramulondi early last week, they still could not collect the maximum points from their National First Division League match last weekend. All they could do was hold Jomo Cosmos to a goalless draw at the Giyani Stadium last Saturday. Ramulondi came on as a substitute 19 minutes towards the end of the game, but his presence did not make any impact. Instead, he caused an upset by missing a fortune in the 84th minute. He received a pre-cooked pass inside the box and hesitated for far too long to unleash until he lost possession. FC AK are still in mourning after losing 0-2 to Blackburn Rovers in XITIVISO XA NHLENGELETANO YA XIBOHO XA VAAKA TIKO SIKU: 04 Mudyaxihi 2013 NKARHI: 10H00 NDHAWU: Homu 14C (eNdhuneni) MASUNGULO: GETHSEMANE MEMORIAL (PTY) LTD va lava ku hluvukisa ndzhawu leyi ringanaka tihekitara ta 20 eka xiphemu xa purasi ra Greater Giyani 891 LT, hi xikongomelo xo endla ndzhawu swa masirha ya xihundla na leswi fambisanaka na swona,e tikweni ra ka Homu e hansi ka Masipala wa xikaya wa Greater Giyani lowu nga hansi ka Masipalankulu wa Mopani exifundzheni xa Limpopo XIKONGOMELO: Ku endla xiboho xa vaaka tiko ku ya hi ku landzelela

front of their home crowd. The score was not a true reflection of the game as FC AK squandered more than half a dozen scoring chances in the first half. Polokwane City have reason to believe that they are on the right track. They unexpectedly held the title chasers, Mpumalanga Black Aces, to a 1-1 draw at the Themba Senamela Stadium in Witbank. FC Cape Town and Roses United shared the glory. They scored one goal apiece at the NNK Rugby Stadium in Cape Town. Although they were playing on their home soil, Thanda Royal Zulu did lose 0-1 to Milano United at the Richards Bay Stadium. Sivutsa Stars were too good for Witbank Spurs. They crushed them 3-1 at the Kabokweni Stadium in Nelspuit.

R2 million RDP housing project “wasted” A government department is accused of wasting R2 million when building 130 RDP houses in Tshikota which were never occupied by beneficiaries. The houses were completed 12 years ago at Tshikota, the residential area adjacent to Makhado town. They were built next to the filthy Tshikota hostels and stranded passers-by turned them into toilets, while foreigners used some as their hiding places. Now thugs are stealing the window frames, corrugated iron and door frames. Sam Galane is one of the beneficiaries who tried to occupy one of the houses but was later kicked out by the Makhado Municipality. Galane said he registered for an RDP house in 2001 and stayed in one of these houses for 10

He said one of the municipal officers told the occupants that the municipality wanted to demolish them in 2008, but nothing happened. “I wonder who paid the contractor, because the Makhado Municipality is distancing itself from the project. We need the Limpopo Department of Housing to come and see how millions of rands are being wasted by the Makhado Municipality," said Galane. Thohoyandou Stadium gets a new coat The Thohoyandou Stadium's closure in 2007 left many sore hearts, especially among taxi drivers, vendors and other businesses which thrived on match days. Good news is that the stadium is undergoing massive refurbishment and may soon reclaim its former glory. Mirror recently visited the stadium and found contractors busy with the renovation work. “We have started with the refurbishment at the stadium, and we are hopeful that it will be ready for use in the next Premier Soccer League season,” said Mr Nndwamato Tshiila, the municipality’s spokesperson.

The closure of the stadium because of its bad condition dealt a hammer blow to hawkers and food vendors and also contributed adversely to the local economic development in the area. This has caused the local PSL side Black Leopards to lead a nomadic existence and they played either in Giyani or Polokwane. Tshiila said the renovation would take place in phases and that work had already commenced with the drainage system around the stadium. He said the first phase would also include the re-electrification of the change rooms and toilets. “We are well aware that the facility has not

been in use for a long time and that some of the facilities are now rundown and need attention. After completion, the stadium will be one of the best, “said Tshiila. He said the main grandstand had been inspected and found to be unsafe for use. “While other stands will be utilized during the renovation stages, we will fence off the main grandstand to avoid injury to spectators. We can assure our communities that the other grandstands were also inspected by qualified engineers and found to be suitable. When money is available, we will fix the main grandstand and continue to refurbish the rest of the stands. This is a massive project and our communities must just be patient as it will take time to complete," added Tshiila. Tshiila said that the municipality had other smaller stadiums like Saselamani, Mdabula, Tshifudi, Tshikombani and the recently constructed MakhuvhaTshilivho Stadium. “The Makhuvha-Tshilivho Stadium is almost complete and is one of the best in Limpopo which can house 15 000 to 20 An official from the Thulamela municipality doing some inspections at 000 spectators,” said the stadium. Professor Khuba honoured by community A retired and well-known academic, Professor Asnath Elelwani Khuba, was finally honoured by her community. The organisation Mudzi Wa Vhurereli Ha Vhavenda recognised her contributions and honoured her at a function held at the Thohoyandou Town Hall. Professor Khuba was the first Muvenda woman to obtain a BA degree and was a first in many spheres of life. She was born

in 1937 and throughout her life worked tirelessly for development in the then Venda region. The recent function at Thohoyandou hall attracted at least 15 professors as well as the mayor of Thulamela, Cllr Grace Mahosi. The coordinator of the function, Mr Humbelani Thanyani Nemakonde, who is also the executive secretary of Mudzi, said Khuba had played an immense role in the development of the Tshivenda language and

culture and that the honour was long overdue. “She has done our nation proud by being the first woman in our region to obtain a degree and also become the first woman professor,” said Nemakonde. Mudzi Wa Vhurereli Ha Vhavenda started honouring exceptional and outstanding individuals in 2011, with renowned author Dr Maumela, who had written more than 50 books, being the first recipient. “We are still going to identify individuals in the community, regardless of their religious beliefs, and give them awards as a way of encouraging them to work even harder and also to motivate others to emulate them,” he said. Khuba, who is widely travelled, has done a lot of research in the Tshivenda language and written many publications, said she was humbled. “I have done my part; this is my humble contribution to nation building. I urge others to have thirst and not to stop thinking of ways to make this world a better place for all. This could only be done through education. I am happy that after years of labour, my community has finally recognized me,” said Khuba. Pupils carry Rofhiwa´s coffin during her funeral on Saturday. By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho

Young victim of fire dies in hospital A Grade 9 pupil at Mushaathoni Secondary School died at the Mankweng Hospital after she had sustained severe burns when the oneroom house in which the girl and her father were sleeping burned down on 24 March. Rofhiwa Thivheli-Ratshitshi (16) and her father, Mr Josias Thivheli (48), were fast asleep when Thivheli’s spouse, Ms Livhuwani Priscilla Phaswana, allegedly poured petrol into the house at Tshirolwe Extension 2 in Nzhelele, at about

03:20. The petrol was ignited by a candle flame, which instantly caused an inferno. Mr Thivheli died in hospital shortly after the incident in which Rofhiwa was left with critical burns. Rofhiwa was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) where she had reportedly been responding well to treatment. On 3 April, however, Rofhiwa passed away. Her death, particularly the fact that she died as a result of the fire, shocked the entire Tshirolwe area, her family and school. “We are wounded as a school,” said a teacher, Mr Prince Manenzhe. “This young girl died a painful death. Rofhiwa was admitted to our school early this year and she proved to be a lovely girl who enjoyed laughing and interacting with fellow pupils and teachers alike.” Manenzhe added that the pupils were traumatised, following the horrible death of the pupil and that the school was considering seeking psychological counselling for the pupils. The deceased’s mother, Ms Joyce Ratshitshi, was still struggling to come to terms with her death this week. “I am hurting after all that has happened,” she said. “My daughter died a painful, brutal death...” she sobbed. Rofhiwa was laid to rest at Sane on Saturday morning. The spokesperson for the Mphephu police, W/O Lazarus Netshidzati, indicated that the charge against Phaswana had been changed from attempted murder to murder. Phaswana, who remains in custody, will appear in the Dzanani The young victim of the fire, Rofhiwa (16), Magistrate’s Court on 8 May on two counts of murder and one charge of arson. died in hospital.

Benny’s Care in provincial Danone final Benny’s Sports Development Academy, the current Vhembe champions, will play in the Danone Nations Cup Under 12 provincial finals at the Seshego Stadium on Saturday. Five primary school teams will be competing for a place in the next step up the ladder which leads to London and the Danone Nations World Cup finals in September. The teams competing in the Limpopo Provincial Under 12 finals are: Bantwane primary school (Sekhukhune region), Thapola-A-Nkona primary school (Mopani region) and Benny’s Sports Development Academy (Vhembe region). They will

be joined by the winners from the Capricorn and Waterberg regions, who have yet to be determined. Benny’s Sports Development Academy, which was formed in 2004 and is based at Tshiozwi, has been playing in the competition since 2010 and this is the third time they have made it through to the provincial finals. Team manager Richard Sidebi says their training is going very well. “We have an athletics coach, helping with speed and fitness, and in the afternoon we have our practise sessions. “We are fortunate in that all the kids stay at the school’s boarding house,

which makes it easier for us as we don’t have to worry about players arriving late in the morning,” he says. Sedebi mentions that his defenders, Oscar Nemavhulaha and Chris Mukwevho (who is also the team captain), have formed a solid defensive combination. “They have both played in the competition before and the young captain has been doing a very good job since we started preparing for the tournament.” “The players are very committed and in the past few games they have shown courage and hunger. Going to London will help put our school on the map. For these kids, it would be a trip of a lifetime,” he said.

Basel FC let All Stars off the hook The struggle for promotion and to escape relegation at the end of the season was on among the teams affiliated to the Limpopo Stream of the SAFA Second Division League last weekend. Basel FC had nobody but themselves to blame for sharing the spoils with Mosesetjane All Stars at the Mahwelereng Stadium in Mokopane last Saturday. Basel were leading 2-0 until the last five minutes of the game. As if victory was already certain, Basel abandoned their original playing pattern and started to play short passes within their own danger area. They were severely punished for that.

In farcical manner the home side pulled one back four minutes before the referee, Mr Thabelo Tshienda, blew the final whistle. They scored the equalizer two minutes later, to bring the final score to 2-2. Basel are now lying in the fifth place on the log, following the poor result. Phungo All Stars have reason to celebrate. They fought hard to earn the three significant league points at the expense of Baobab Zero Fake, whom they narrowly beat 1-0 at the Makhado Eltivillas grounds. In their tit-for-tat encounter at the Seshego Stadium, The Dolphins scored four goals and conceded three against Mighty FC.

Nobela All Stars were brutally overpowered 0-4 by Winners Park at the Mahwelereng Stadium in Mokopane. The result has pushed Nobela All Stars to the bottom of the log. Blue Rocks and Modimolle Aces drew 1-1 at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen. Ray Pillars gave away league points to Giyani Hotspurs, despite the fact that they were playing at home. They lost 1-3 at the Seshego Stadium. Magezi FC beat Rospa United 1-0 at the Peter Mokaba Athletics Stadium, while Lephalale Young Killers lost 0-4 to Baroka at the Mogol Stadium in Lephalale.

Madombidzha Arsenal grab a victory the rock-solid defence of Arsenal. No goals were seen during the first half. This was influenced mainly by the fact that Benny’s were cooling the ball down in the middle of the park, thus giving their opponents no chance to do as they pleased. Arsenal’s strength was in their solid defence and their strikers, but they lacked cohesion in the middle of the park. The balls that threatened the defence of Arsenal were ballooned from behind. Benny’s had a scoring opportunity early in the second half, but their striker, Andani Nemalili, shot wide with only the keeper, Rendani Maduwa, left. The centre forward of Benny’s, Rendani Galdzane, went into the referee’s book, following a dangerous attack on Mbengeni Rambuwani. The home team had an opportunity in the 78th minute and Matodzi Mutangwa scored easily. Their opponents should have equalised two minutes later, but Lesedi Kapinga shot into the keeper’s hands. The boys from the academy soon realised that it was not their day when they missed three beautiful chances in the 84th, 86th and 88th minute Modiha Mashego of Benny´s (right) controls the respectively. The players who made the supporters ball, while Daklo Nwanamidwa tries to block jump up from their seats in disbelief were Khuliso Mudau, Loyd Davhana and Marubini Manyane. the attack.

their starting lineups in the last half. There was drama inside the pitch in the 69th minute. Lufuno Mudau of Stone Breakers kicked Fhulufhelo Mugeri intentionally and although the referee warned Mudau with a card, that was not good enough for Mugeri. Mugeri retaliated by kicking Mudau and the referee took no time ingiving him his marching orders. Hulisani Netshivhazwaulu completed his brace in the 78th minute. The players and officials for Stone Breakers confronted the referee, Mr Nkhangweni Tshienda, after the game. They accused him of favouritism.

The underdogs, Madombidzha Arsenal, played their hearts out to silence their much-feared enemies, Benny’s Care. They managed to beat them 1-0 in the Safa Vhembe SAB match played at Madombidzha on Sunday. Benny’s enjoyed more ball possession, but their promising moves were turned into a nightmare by

defence of Stone Breakers. Netshivhazwaulu scored a brace in the match. As if they were going to bury their opponents alive, Stone Breakers were the first to find the net. Their only goal came in the 19th minute. Elijah Khaukanani caught the Stars’ keeper off guard and beat him with a volley. Shooting Stars did not stop fighting, despite conceding the early goal. They continued to play like an organized team until the wheel of fortune turned in their favour. Their equalizing goal came in the 37th minute. Hulisani Netshivhazwaulu was on target, following a neat pass from Lindelani Mugeri. Both sides effected two changes to

Phungo All Stars too strong for Baobab Zero Fake The relegation candidates in the Safa Limpopo Second Division league, Phungo All Stars, were too strong for Baobab Zero Fake when they beat them1-0 in their match played at Eltivillas on Saturday. Zero Fake's goal scorer, Bongani Machimane, could not live up to his reputation as he was contained by Tondani Nkhumeleni. Machimane and Wesley Mukhari should have scored more than twice each, had it not been for the fact that it was not their day. Zero Fake were matching their opponents pound for pound in the first half, but their original stamina faded as the going became tough. The supporters of the visiting team started to boo their own Bongani Machimane. Stars' striker, Mpho Sekgobela, should have scored when the match was 38 minutes old, but his shot was saved by the keeper, Colbert Mohale. Both sides frustrated their fans a great deal by wasting obvious chances. Seven minute later, Mohale collided with Ipfani Siphuma and was replaced by Themba Nkhanzi. The half-time score was still nil-nil. In the second half, Stars immediately took command of the game in search of a goal. The pressure increased on their opponents' defenders, who continuously made mistakes. The guys who were giving the defence a terrible headache were Prince

Ndwamato and Hulisani Mathugane. Mathugane picked up a long-range shot from the centre line and beat the keeper, Themba Nkhanzi. After the goal, the match stopped for five minutes while the players of Zero Fake accused the referee of favouritism. Stars' defender, Nhlanhla Mkhize, was warned by the referee for

rough play on his opponent, Nyiko Sibanda. After the match, the team officials went onto pitch and accused the referee, Martin Sivhada, of being biased. The managing director of Stars, David Thidiela, and his son Tshifhiwa protected the referee from the angry officials of Zero Fake.

Mbahe United Brothers scrape through to next round Mbahe United Brothers managed to book a place in the next stage of the prestigious PIB MTG and Black Leopards KO competition when they beat Tshilonwe Young Bombers 5-4 at the Tshifudi Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The match was played under protest. Young Bombers lodged a protest with the referee, Mr Mmboniseni Makhado, before the game started. In their protest, Bombers allege that a player of United Brothers, Thitevhelwi Nembilwi, was not properly registered with the team. The teams’ captains, Tshimangadzo Magoba (United Brothers) and Tsumbedzo Mukhuba, were reprimanded with yellow cards when the game was 14 minutes old. Their sin was exchanging some bitter words in front of the referee. The other player who went into the referee’s book before the end of the first half was Afunano Tshamano of United Brothers. He tackled Nnyimiseni Masikhwa illegally and the referee was lenient enough to let him go with yellow. Ntevhedzeni Nembilwi of United Brothers was also booked for faking an injury early in the last half. The score board was still blank when the referee blew the final whistle and the winner had to be determined through a penalty shootout. United Brothers scored five through Ntungufhadzeni Makhado, Fhatuwani Tshikuvhe, Ntevhedzeni Nembilwi, Tendani Ramphedeli and Takalani Rammbuda, while the four goals for Young Bombers came via Tsumbedzo Mukhuba, The players and fans for United Brothers congratulate their keeper, Fhumulani Mphanama, Nnyimiseni Masikhwa and Nkhuliseni Tshamano, by holding him up after the game.
