Mr Mashudu Ligunuba (63), a well-known businessman from Ha-Luvhimbi village, whose car was hijacked at gunpoint at Makonde village last Wednesday night (10 May), says the fact that businesses cannot even operate safely in this country anymore because of criminals is a crying shame.

Ligunuba’s Toyota Fortuner, driven by one of his staff members, was hijacked at Mudaswali River at about 18:00. According to the driver (22), he was washing the car at the river when he was ambushed by two gun-wield-

ing young men. Pointing to a big gash on his head, the still-traumatised young man said they had hit him with the butt of a gun and demanded money and bank cards. “I told them I did not have a cent with me, and I had only R200 in the bank. They put me into the boot of [the Fortuner] and drove into a bushy area and demanded my bank pin. They said if I gave them the wrong pin, they would shoot me and throw my body in the bush. They drove to the garage and bought petrol for R70 before driving towards Tshilamba.”

“I’m not buying a status”

... But rumours have it that a new deal is on the cards for Black Leopards

Black Leopards’ owner, Mr David “Tshifhe” Thidiela, strongly denied rumours earlier this week that he was about to buy the status of another first-division or premier-league team. He said that if his team were relegated, they would have to work their way to the top again, without taking shortcuts.

But his words are being taken with more than a pinch of salt by soccer pundits. Many experts believe that negotiations to acquire another status are at an advanced stage, and that for the announcement to be made is just a matter of time.

The Thohoyandou-based Black Leopards team have had a horrendous season, ending last on the log in the National First Division (Motsepe Foun-

dation Championship). This once prestigious team are about to join their Limpopo counterparts, TTM, in being relegated to the third-tier ABC Motsepe League. This will also mean that Lidoda Duvha, as the club is affectionately known, are moving to the ranks of the amateur sides.

Last week, rumours started spreading that Mr Thidiela had concluded an agreement to buy another status. Initially the name of TS Galaxy, a premier-league side was mentioned. This was followed by rumours that he was about to buy Cape Town All Stars’ status. All Stars ended fourth on the Motsepe Foundation Championship log, narrowly missing out on a chance to move to the higher division.

During an interview on Tuesday, how-

ever, Thidiela was adamant that these were all just rumours. “I’m not going to buy someone else’s status,” he said. “I don’t have a problem with people who are always speculating. Do that, but I’m not going to do it. If I’m relegated, I’m going to play in the ABC Motsepe League.”

Thidiela said that Lidoda duvha would simply have to work their way up again, instead of taking shortcuts. “In football, you must be patient,” he said.

Scores of mourners were overcome with grief as they said their final goodbyes to 15-year-old Rotondwa Ramaloko, who tragically lost her life during an armed robbery at Elim Mall last week. The funeral service was held at Ha-Mashamba on 13 May, and she was laid to rest at Ha-Maila Cemetery. Rotondwa, a Grade 9 learner at Michael Denga Ramabulana Secondary School, was fatally shot during a shoot-out between security guards and robbers who took off with money they had stolen from a cash-in-transit company. Molokgadi Sarah Ramalata, the security officer who was shot and killed at Muduluni Community Hall, was given a dignified funeral at Madabani on Saturday, 13 May. Molokgadi and her sister, Luanda Faith Ramalata, who worked for different security firms but were stationed together on the night of the incident, were attacked on the night of 6 May. While load shedding was implemented, two unknown suspects suddenly appeared from the back of the building and started shooting directly at the women. Molokgadi was shot in the head, chest and other parts of her body, while Luanda was shot in both legs. Mr RC Maphaha, the manager of CS Security, where Molokgadi was employed, described her as a dedicated security officer who had contributed a lot to the fight against crime. A befitting farewell for Vho-Nyadzanga Tanzwani (94)

Obituary

Vho-Nyadzanga Tanzwani (94), a well-known and much-loved local subsistence farmer, was laid to rest at her home village of Khubvi, north of Thohoyandou, on Saturday, 13 May. Vho-Nyadzanga drew her last breath on 3 May, just two months after she had buried her husband, Vho-Rauvhona Philemon Tanzwani. He was a retired school principal and 95 when he passed away.

With hundreds of mourners attending the funeral, Vho-Nyadzanga’s send-off was a celebration of a life well lived, being a highly respected Christian until her last day on earth, and a staunch member of the Salvation Army.

Captain Siyabonga Mcineka of the Salvation Army told the mourners that someone as valuable to society as Vho-Nyadzanga had been, did not die normally but multiplied. “We can all concur

Vho-Nyadzanga was born into a royal family at Khubvi village on 3 April 1929. Her late parents, Tshikutu Andries Randima and Nyaluvhimba Mutangwa Randima had five children, of which Vho-Nyadzanga was the third born. Although she never went to school herself, she strongly believed in the importance of a good education and supported all six of her children in their educational journeys.

Vho-Nyadzanga is survived by her younger sister, Vho-Luvhengo Mauvhelwana, brother Vho-Avhapfani Thomson Randima, six children (Thivhilaeli, Thinandavha, Tshilidzi, Aluwani, Annah and Priscilla), 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

There he sought help from the villagers, who managed to phone his boss and his parents. “My father and my boss arrived after a while and, as I was still bleeding, they rushed me to a local clinic, but unfortunately it was closed. They took me to the Donald Fraser Hospital, which is about 30 kilometres away from Ngalavhani village,” he said.

On Sunday, the police spotted two young men who were struggling to start a white Toyota Fortuner next to Thavhani Mall. When

they approached them, one ran away, but they managed to arrest the other suspect and recover the stolen car.

Ligunuba said that when he had arrived at the scene, he had been told that the arrested suspect was an undocumented Zimbabwean national. “Our borders are so porous that illegal foreigners come to our country every day to commit crime, then leave again without a trace. It is obvious that my car was going to be sold in Zimbabwe. How are we going to operate in such situations

as businesspeople? When your drivers are out there working, you don’t even know whether they will come back alive or in a plastic bag,” he fumed.

According to Ligunuba, the village is becoming a hotspot for car hijackings in the Vhembe District. Over the past few years, many cars have been hijacked at Makonde and the nearby Khubvi villages, without ever being recovered. “This area must be prioritised as a hijacking hotspot and monitored regularly by the police,” he said.

Two more ATMs blown up by robbers at Bungeni

Bungeni residents and the surrounding communities have been dealt a second vicious blow in the space of a month, after robbers destroyed all of their ATMs.

Three weeks ago, they lost one of their three ATMs when armed robbers blew up a Capitec ATM at the Saseki shopping complex. In the early hours of Sunday, 14 May, the

same shopping complex was hit by criminals again, who blew up the remaining two ATMs, leaving the community with no banking facilities.

Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the incident. “Five unknown armed male suspects accosted security guards at the Njhakanjhaka Saseki shopping complex in Bungeni and held them hostage while they bombed the ATMs. It is

not clear at this stage whether any money was taken from the ATMs or not, but the suspects fled the scene on foot, without firing any shots,” he said.

The bombing has left these rural communities somewhat handicapped. The ATMs saved many of the residents the costs of taking taxis to nearby towns for their banking needs.

Mr Makhayisani Mabunda, chairperson of the Bungeni royal council, said the second bombing had come as a big shock to the community. “We have not even had time to get over the first bombing three weeks ago, now this. We are a very rural community with no facilities except the ATMs. Poverty is at its worst here, and residents depend on grants and can hardly afford taxi fares to town. This is very sad for us, and we just hope the police will do their work and stop this carnage,” he said.

Ledwaba said a manhunt had been launched to track down the suspects, who are still at large. “As police, we request anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact Captain Mabunda on 082 565 7901. Alternatively, they can contact the nearest police station, Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or go to the MySAPSApp. Investigations are underway,” he said.

Don’t let the fight for top positions divide the ANC, warns ANC’s Ludere

by the regional secretary of the ANC, Mr Rudzani Ludere. His group is backing VDM’s mayor, Dowelani Nenguda, as deputy chairperson, with the mayor of Collins Chabane Municipality, Shadrack Maluleke, as deputy secretary.

Ludere warned members not to use the congress to divide the party in the region. He said that the special REC should focus on the task at hand as they were gearing for the 2024 general election.

Water arrive at last for “desperate” villagers of Tshivhangani village

The Tshivhangani community received some relief from the severe lack of water they have been experiencing for the past few years when the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) at long last arrived to drill a new borehole at the village last week.

Taps at this village have been without a drop of water for the past two years since their borehole broke down. The residents were at the point of losing all hope that the VDM would ever come to fix the borehole, so that they could have clean drinking water again, when the municipality finally came to their aid.

The borehole was drilled last Monday (8 May). Although the residents still do not have running water from their own taps in their homes, the new borehole provides them with

two communal water stations, which were set up and ready for use by Wednesday (10 May).

The VDM’s spokesperson, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, urged the community to look after the borehole and prevent vandalisation or tampering with in any way. “I am appealing to everybody in the community to safeguard the borehole, because there might be people who will be targeting the borehole. We will be erecting

more boreholes in due time,” he said.

One of the residents, Ms Promise Rasoesoe, was excited and happy that the community finally had clean water again. “Our people have been thirsty for a long time, even when we tried many times to engage the municipality. We know many other communities have the same challenges as we have here, so we are thankful for this clean water,” she said.

Hlanganani FM’s offices get destroyed by arsonists

The residents of Bungeni Xitachi village woke up to the sad news on Sunday (14 May) that the building that hosted their local radio station, Hlanganani FM, had been burnt down by unknown individuals.

The community radio station ceased operations five years ago because of non-compliance with ICASA legislation, causing them to lose their license.

The latest incident took place just as the community members were eagerly anticipating the reopening of the radio station. The community had previously dismissed the board members of the station and appointed two leaders from the local traditional council to handle the license-renewal process in 2020.

Grade 9 learner of Manaledzi dies after being knocked over by car

A Grade 9 learner from Manaledzi High died on his way to school last Wednesday (10 May), after being hit by a speeding car.

According to an eyewitness,

the deceased boy, identified as Dakalo Phaladi (14) from Ravele, was walking next to the road with a group of other learners from different schools when the vehicle approached at high speed. The driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle and ploughed into the group of children, hitting only Dakalo. He died at the scene.

Limpopo police spokesperson Lt Col Malesela Ledwaba urged motorists again to be extra cautious when driving. He condemned any form of reckless driving, especially speeding by drivers along the roads. “The cause of this accident is still not clear at this stage. A case of culpable homicide was opened, and investigations are continuing,” said Ledwaba.

Dakalo’s mother, Ms Mpho Tshaduli, said the family members were still trying to recover from the shock. “God only knows why this happened.

It is very painful to lose a child like this,” she said.

The principal of Manaledzi High, Dr Samuel Tshigomana, said the school was deeply saddened by the incident. He expressed his sincere condolences to the bereaved family.

“Dakalo was a bright learner who was serious about his education. We will, as a matter of urgency, dispatch a team of professionals to the school to give counselling to the kids who are traumatised,” he said.

The chairperson of the Sinthumule Traditional Council, Mr Makhado Sinthumule, described the incident as a tragedy. He said he had been complaining about speeding vehicles in the area for some time now. “We are greatly saddened that another innocent life has been lost in this way,” he said.

Dakalo will be buried at Ravele on Saturday, 20 May, with the service starting at 06:00.

According to a reliable source interviewed by Limpopo Mirror, the attack on the radio station’s offices has left the community feeling hopeless. “The incident was preceded by two gunshots [by the perpetrators, before they set the station on fire]. As community members, we deeply feel the loss of the radio station, as it was our only local station and we had been eagerly awaiting its return,” she said.

The chairperson of the Bungeni royal council, Mr Makhayisani Mabunda,

expressed his disappointment, highlighting the radio station’s importance as a vital source of information and communication for the community. “We received a call from the local headman and discovered that the fire was uncontrollable, resulting in nothing being left.

Prior to the fire, the station had already been vandalised, prompting us to salvage some of the remaining equipment,” Mabunda said.

Mr Vicky Muvhali, the chairperson of the Njhakanjhaka traditional council, referred to their efforts to renew the license in 2020 and the subsequent request to reapply. “We reapplied last in 2021, and our application was acknowledged. We were awaiting the gazetting

of the license, as our application had been recognised,” Muvhali said. He said that they had no idea as to why the building was set alight and what the motive behind it might be.

The Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the arson attack. “The officers attended to the scene and the fire fighters were summoned and arrived and extinguished the fire. Several items, including furniture, were gutted. No arrests were made so far,” Ledwaba said.

Payouts start for military veterans

The secretary of the South African National Military Veterans Association (SANMVA) in Limpopo, retired Major-General Lyborn Muthaphuli, confirmed earlier this week that former soldiers had started receiving pension benefits as from 27 April.

Bophuthatswana and Ciskei (TBVC) homelands, Azanian Liberation Army (Apla) and Umkhonto We Sizwe MK to fight for their pensions, as they were promised during their integration to form the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in 1994, was now over.

Shock at sudden death of Cllr Selina Phiri

The community of Musina learned with shock and disbelief about the sudden death of well-known local politician Cllr Tebogo Selina Phiri. Phiri (43) was admitted to Messina Hospital, where she died from an undisclosed illness on Wednesday evening, 10 May.

Phiri served as a member of Musina Local Municipality’s executive committee (EXCO) since November 2021. She was a proportional representative (PR) councillor, representing the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Before she took up the position of councillor at the municipality, she served as station manager for Musina FM.

Her husband, Mr Aubrey Maluleke, was very emotional when he broke the news. “Although it is painful and sounds like a dream, I can confirm that it is true that my

wife has passed on. Our loved one was sick, and we had hoped that she would recover and come back home to continue serving the community. However, the dark cloud has hanged over our heads, and we have to face this reality head on. This is a very difficult time for the family, but we are very thankful for the support from family members, Musina Municipality, friends and the entire Musina community,” he said.

During an urgent commemorative special council meeting on Monday, 15 May, Musina Mayor Nkhanedzeni Mawela conveyed his sincere condolences to the Phiri family, her political party and everyone who had had the pleasure of knowing and working with her.

Thama crowned as Miss Levubu SAPS 2023

Eighteen-year-old Thama Ndou from Lwamondo became the very first Miss SAPS Levubu when she was crowned at Mirunzini Lodge and Entertainment Centre in Tshifulanani on Saturday, 6 May.

The Levubu SAPS, in partnership with the Matodzi Mukwevho Modelling Agency, initiated the beauty pageant to encourage the youth to get more involved in uplifting pastimes and to concentrate more on positive things.

Thama and her two princesses,

17-year-old Thuso Nethononda (first princess) and 17-year-old Makhadzi Mulaudzi (second princess), further get to participate in the Youth Against Crime Movement, under the Levubu SAPS’s jurisdiction.

Thama, who started modelling at the age of 10, joined the Matodzi Mukwevho Modelling Agency last year to help build her self-confidence and to learn more about the modelling industry. She was very excited about winning this title and could not stop singing the praises of her parents and the modelling agency.

“It was a great competition and my first experience on a big stage like that. I

have only joined local competitions in this area, so it was very unfamiliar territory. I want to become an ambassador for other aspiring models,” she said. Her hobbies include modelling, swimming, gymnastics, and singing. “I believe that it is possible to achieve anything you want through prayer and hard work. Whenever you feel helpless, never lose hope. You can still achieve more, just like me!”

Levubu SAPS’s station commissioner, Lt Col Hangwani Mahafha, said they had come to the realisation that to reduce crime they had to engage the youth in positive activities.

Young citizen scientists confirm that Buysdorp’s water is top class

A group of children from Mara Primary School in Buysdorp turned into budding young environmental scientists last week, when they visited the nearby stream to take water samples and have these analysed. Much to their delight, it turned out that they have a “healthy” water source, with very little contamination.

The outing last Tuesday (9 May) formed part of the “Diamonds on the Soles of Our Feet” project, funded by the National Research Foundation and managed by a team from the University of the Western Cape and the Department of Water and Sanitation. This is an award-winning citizen science project, through which not only local water sources get monitored, but local communities are taught about the importance of protecting clean water resources.

“The project is transforming volunteers in these remote rural areas from being passive and not engaging with science, to becoming scientists themselves,” said Prof Jacqueline Goldin, an associate professor extra-ordinary in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Centre for UNESCO Chair in Groundwater, at the University of the Western Cape. Prof Goldin is the spokesperson for the project.

of the project was thoroughly enjoyed by 42 of Mara Primary School’s learners. The children, from Grade 5 to 7, visited the stream flowing from the mountains at Buysdorp where they helped collect samples, using special water-health testing kits.

According to Mr Murendeni Mavhungu, the science field manager of the project, the goal of the project is not only to gather reliable data on water health, but also to encourage a sense of pride, belonging, dedication and empowerment through their actions. The local teachers are also involved and are taught how to use a scoring system to check the health of rivers and wells.

The citizen scientists use Mini SASS, a uniquely South African scoring system, where they calculate the number of aquatic invertebrates to determine the river health. The freshwater-quality monitoring kit supplied by a non-profit organisation, Earthwatch Europe, is a special kit that determines the level of phosphate and

nitrates in the water as well as the turbidity of the water.

Once the results are available, these are transmitted via cellphone straight to official data-collection centres, which compile data required for the formulation of water policy as part of SDG 6.3.2. The data platform has been designed and is managed by Earthwatch.

Learners are also encouraged to raise awareness in their municipalities, schools, businesses and tribal authorities about the water conditions in the rivers and wells in their area.

Rosina Kgadima, the principal of Mara Primary School, reckoned that the project was not only beneficial to the school but to the whole community. “Learners were very happy participating in this project,” said Kgadima.

The tests conducted at Buysdorp last week showed no presence of nitrates and phosphates in the water. The scoring system showed that the river had a score of greater than 6.9, meaning the river water is still in its original condition.

Dismissed workers turn to the CCMA to get jobs back

According to the workers, some of the cases are waiting for conciliation processes, while others are now waiting for arbitration. The cases were heard on different dates in Thohoyandou since the CCMA has no permanent offices around Thohoyandou.

Though the workers are affiliated to the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU), they have decided to take the matter upon themselves, saying that they had no faith left in SACCAWU, whom they accuse of failing the workers in previous similar cases.

One of SACCAWU’s shop stewards confirmed the dismissal, but said that the union would no longer come to the workers’ rescue. The dismissed workers are all till operators (cashiers) who have been working for Shoprite for more than six years. Various reasons were given for these workers’ dismissal, with some workers apparently being accused of having a shortfall in cash tills, according to sales, while

Thembi Moloto, the regional human resources manager for Shoprite, had previously said the workers were free to approach the CCMA if they felt they had been unfairly dismissed.

Austine calls on youth to create jobs for themselves and others

Austine Ndamulelo Netshiongolwe, or MC Austine as he is also known, can be described as a jack of all trades who masters them all. The 26-year-old lad from Maniini outside Thohoyandou is a living example that, with determination, nothing is impossible. In a very short space of time, he has achieved so much that he has become a source of inspiration to many.

Also called ‘Mr Lovely Voice’, he was first appointed as a presenter for Kingdom FM in 2017. Between 2019 and 2020, he worked for Vhembe FM, where he hosted one of their shows.

But MC Austine’s skills do not end with radio work. He is also a marketing guru, presently working for three different companies. In 2022, he founded Chillas Car Wash in Phiphidi, and in April this year, the Austine Hair Salon in Maniini opened its doors to clients.

Despite his already full

schedule, MC Austine still finds time to direct programmes at ceremonies and functions, and compèring as MC at festivals, where he has called popular musicians such as Master KG, the evergreen Makhadzi and veteran reggae icon Colbert Mukwevho, to mention but a few, to the stage.

Asked how he managed all these different roles, MC Austine was quick to point out that one’s heart must be right. “You tell yourself what you want to achieve in life. You work hard for it, and, with determination, there is no way you can fail. I do not limit myself; hustling is all about trying whatever comes your way. I do not have matric, so the odds are always high for me, but this

is something I don’t allow to stand in my way,” he said.

“My wife, Andani Carol Muditambi, is my partner in business and my biggest inspiration. Our call to the youth of South Africa is ‘don’t wait to be employed by someone else. Get up and create jobs for yourselves and for others,’” he said.

The Venrap artist grew up listening to famous musicians such as 50 Cent and the late Tu Pac, who greatly inspired his work. He started his music career as a backing vocalist for several artists and groups around Vhembe. To enhance his music skills, he took piano lessons. His first album, The Coming, was released in 2018.

Envisage is already in great demand and has also started receiving airplay on community, regional and national radio stations. “I

am very happy and

proud that my album is so well received by my fans out there. It tells me that my music has matured and appeals to all age groups,” he said.

Getting the album released, however, was not easy for him as he had to fund the project himself. “But even though it is self-marketed, many copies have already been sold since its release. I am so in love with the album. Maybe it has to do with the fact that it has taken me many years to work on and complete. It might be long in terms of tracks, but I know every lyric on it by heart. I can sing each song in my sleep,” he laughed.

According to the music critics, his fanbase is steadily growing larger because of his unique style, which consists of heavy bass sounds.

In Venda culture, the tshikona is performed at nearly all important occasions, such as the installation of a new ruler, the commemoration of a ruler’s death, the sacrificial rites at the graves of a ruler’s ancestors and other celebrations. This dance is known as the national dance of the Venda people, who have been performing it for generations. But no one else can perform the tshikona with the same flair as one particular group of women at Muswodi-Tshisimani village, near Folovhodwe, known as Tshikona tsha Muswodi-Tshisimani tsha Vhafumakadzi (female tshikona dancers).

The leader of this group of 43 women, Ms Elisa Phaswana, said the group was established way back in 1982, in the

era of late Venda President Patrick Ramaano Mphephu, who used to encourage the communities to promote and preserve their culture.

Phaswana said that although the tshikona had originally been performed by men - dancing and playing on different instruments - for this group of women it had become one of the most interesting and enjoyable dances they had ever performed in their lives. “We get hired around the Vhembe region to perform when new traditional leaders are being installed or during their burials, and at traditional and cultural dance competitions. It also serves as a job-creation project for unemployed rural women as we get paid most of the time for performing the tshikona, which helps us to put food on the table for our families.”

Phaswana said that one of

the most remarkable ceremonies they had ever attended in all their years of playing and dancing the tshikona had been when they had been invited to the inauguration of former Venda ruler Frank Ndwakhulu Ravele, when he had become the second President of Venda, late in 1988, shortly after the death of Patrick Ramaano Mphephu.

Thovhele Ratshibvumo II Rammbuda, who recently witnessed Tshikona tsha Muswodi-Tshisimani tsha Vhafumakadzi doing the tshikona, was excited that the women from his rural communities have mastered a dance traditionally performed by men. “We are proud to be associated with these women. Tshikona tsha Muswodi-Tshisimani tsha Vhafumakadzi will remain the centre of entertainment for communities around,” he said.

This talented author is big on enlightening people about life. He believes that young people must voice their challenges. He practises this view whenever he visits local schools to encourage matriculants to maintain the momentum and stay focused.

“It is important to use our skills to teach young people, because that is the foundation for our future. Mine is an inborn talent, but my success is coupled with hard work, determination, and a positive attitude. I also want to prove the fact that success does not depend on whether one comes from a disadvantaged rural area, like mine, but on one’s ability to use what available resources one has,” he said.

His first book, Mahovhohovho A Vhutshilo, was published in 2001, followed by Love, Marriage & Blunders, published in 2021. He said he always tried to make his work as accessible as possible. “Writing is the language of the heart shared with the world. It fulfils me to be able to share my thoughts with so many people at once,” he said.

Community radio stations are the best grooming ground, says Rammbuda

Takalani Rammbuda, who joined Musina FM as a radio presenter last year, says she sees herself presenting radio programmes for bigger broadcasting outlets such as Capricorn FM, Phalaphala FM or the SABC within the next five years.

Rammbuda (31) is a mother of two who balances a career as presenter and nurtures her children. She fell in love with radio journalism when she was in the sixth grade at Makushu Primary School in Musina. “I still remember very well that Phalaphala FM’s presenters visited our school that time. They called out any learner who wished to speak behind the mic, and I was one of them. I learnt then that I had the confidence to speak to the public.

From that point on, I kept on searching for an opportunity to become a radio presenter,” says Rammbuda.

In October last year, she finally got to join Musina FM, where she started out as a Venda news reader. After some time, she was transferred to the Early Morning Rush show from 06:00 to 09:00 on weekdays for about four months. Now she has been assigned to present the Overdrive show from 15:00 to 18:00, Monday to Friday.

Rammbuda has a diploma in information technology from False Bay TVET College in the Western Cape, but says she wants to take her studies further. “I would like to further my studies to align myself with the broadcasting industry, but I am still limited financially,” she says.

Rammbuda’s advice to those who would like to see themselves in the broadcasting industry is to start by joining community radio

stations. “This is the best grooming ground for this industry. You will really learn the ropes,” she says.

Deejay Kim. Kulture is quickly establishing herself as a formidable presence on the music scene, captivating audiences with her unique sound and infectious energy.

Kulture’s passion for music was ignited during her school days when she found solace and inspiration in the arts. But her uncle, DJ Browncat, was the one who truly sparked her love of this art. “He always played music at our family Christmas parties, and I used to stand with him behind the decks, pretending to be a deejay myself,” she remembered.

She completed her Grade 12 at Dimani Agricultural High School in 2018, and she is currently a fourthyear student at the University of Venda (Univen), where she is doing her bachelor of arts in youth development. Her journey as a deejay began in 2021 after she had taught herself the basics from YouTube tutorials and started performing in front of live audiences. Last year, she started doing shows, called Pro-Bono, at prominent venues and events around Limpopo to promote and showcase her talent to a wider audience.

The workshop aims to refine Limpopo-based actors’ skills and establish connections with other actors, acting coaches, and directors.

The multi-talented actor from Makwarela has acted in popular television dramas such as Muvhango (SABC 2), The Estate (SABC 3), and Giyani Land of Blood (SABC 2), and he is currently portraying a sheriff on etv’s telenovela, The Black Door. Furthermore, he is a well-known musician and has gained experience in various other fields as well, such as journalism and graphic design. He is a founder of MAC97 Media. His ultimate goal with the workshop is to see young talent well trained for the industry. “Acting is a glamorous profession that many aspire to break into. However,

having a successful career in film and television requires more than just being a good actor. You need to develop other essential skills, such as scriptwriting.”

Phalaphala FM introduced a new programme, called Mufaro, which replaces the Nne navhone show that used to be broadcast Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 12:00. The new show, presented by Rofhiwa Nethengwe and produced by Tshimangadzo Lizzy Murovhi, is now aired at these times.

The station’s programme manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, said that the show would be presented by a guest host at the beginning of each month. Thereafter, Rofhiwa will present relevant motivational programmes in accordance with the monthly and weekly themes. This feature helps set a good tone for the week.

On Mondays, Vhaundi na vhana focuses on parenting, co-parenting and guardians, as well as children speaking out in general.

On Tuesdays, Side by Side focuses on educational content for 20 minutes, as well as fashion, grooming and a healthy lifestyle.

One Thursday a month, the Vhaaluwa feature broadcasts sermons by Dr TS Muligwe and Mme Violet Liremi. This, Ravele says, is one of their unique selling points (USP) and highly in demand for podcasts.

On Fridays, Manwalwa encourages writing and reading to the listeners, while Ngavhe, which features three times a month, introduces real life stories. Here, listeners get to share their positive and negative life stories on how certain situations changed their lives for better or worse.

On Thursday, 11 May, a memorial service was held for the late Tinyiko Venus Baloyi (44), the security guard from Waterval whose body was found in the Hillside area on Saturday, 22 April, after she had gone missing earlier the same month. Baloyi was attached to the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM)’s Water Services office in Waterval. The memorial service was held at the VDM’s Council Chambers in Thohoyandou, where hundreds of people from all corners of the Vhembe region, including members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU), gathered to pay their last respects. VDM buys two more water trucks to help address the water challenges

The Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) has purchased two more water trucks to supply water to the communities without clean running water.

The VDM said that some

communities were currently experiencing water shortages because of main lines that had burst, while others were due to maintenance work being done at the plants.

Executive Mayor of the VDM Dowelani Nenguda handed the

two water tankers, to the value of more than R5 million, over to the municipality’s technical services department on Thursday, 4 May. Nenguda said that the tankers would be sent out to move around the affected communities to supply them with water, and that they were also in the process of revitalising some of the boreholes.

“We understand that the VDM has a backlog in terms of delivering water to communities, but this intervention will hopefully relieve some of the water shortages. We warn the water truck drivers that, if they are caught selling water to the communities, they will be reported to the police as water is not for sale but a free service to the communities.”

Nenguda added that the district had completed some of the water projects, which are due to be handed over to communities without water.

Free Wi-Fi for residents of Matangari to help them learn and stay informed

While most people from deep rural villages only hear about the fourth industrial revolution, hundreds of villagers at Matangari happily move with the times, thanks to their visionary traditional leader, Vhamusanda Vho-Mutulagole Nyamande. Two weeks ago, he launched a community-advancement initiative that gives free Internet access to anyone in the village, 24/7.

In an interview with Limpopo Mirror on Friday, 12 May, Nyamande explained how

the initiative was conceived.

“Earlier this year, I was doing my routine patrol around my village when I came across an elderly pensioner. When I asked her where she was going, since it was late and becoming dark, she said she was going to the local shop to buy data for her grandson, who needed Internet access to do his homework. It was very painful to see, because the old lady was using her meagre social grant to buy the data. That night, I told myself I needed to do something about it.”

Nyamande said that, for the next three days, he had personally driven to Thohoyandou and

Louis Trichardt with members of his Khoro, approaching several service providers to ask if one of them would sponsor his village with free Internet services. “Although it was tough to convince most of them to plough back into the community, we were happy when Letaba Networks received us with a warm heart. This is a historic initiative that will help our people to get the latest information, while helping our kids to research schoolwork without burdening their parents with the cost of data.”

He said Letaba Networks had immediately gone to work to install three Wi-Fi receiver facilities in different locations in the village. “With the three Wi-Fi facilities now in operation, we will add another two to make sure that my people do not have to walk long distances to access this free Internet service.”

One of the local residents, Emmanuel Manyuwa, thanked Vhamusanda Vho-Nyamande, his Khoro and the sponsors for coming to their rescue. “We can now access any app free of charge, and there is no need to worry about the high cost of data,” he said.

Landbank takes hands with Dept of Agriculture to assist rural farmers

On Friday, 5 May, scores of farmers from around the Vhembe District converged at the Department of Agriculture in Louis Trichardt to learn more about the Blended Finance Scheme (BFS) – a programme established in October last year by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, in partnership with Landbank. The scheme offers financial relief to farmers in primary agriculture and agroprocessing.

Pastor Solomon Lithole from the Pastors Community Concern facilitated the meeting, while Mr Desmond Ramonedi from Landbank explained how the programme works. “BFS is a combination of a loans

and grants offered to farmers. When one applies for a loan, we also offer a grant. The main objective of the programme is to help create employment and accelerate land redistribution in South Africa. Small-scale producers may even be assisted to acquire farms,” he said.

BFS categorises its clients into small-scale producers (with an annual turnover of between R50 000 and R1 million), medium-scale producers (with an annual turnover of between R1 million and R10 million), and large-scale producers (whose annual turnover is between R10 million and R40 million).

However, some conditions are attached for a farmer to qualify for this scheme. Firstly, the applicant must be a South African citizen with a valid South African ID, and/or be

a registered business entity; it must be black-owned and -managed farming enterprise that is commercially viable; in the case of joint ventures, the non-black partner should have 40%, but not less than 26%, ownership in the enterprise; and the farmer should be prepared to share 10% of his profit with workers.

The program is specifically meant for full-time farmers. Government employees, therefore, cannot apply for a BFS loan/grant. They will only be eligible to apply two years after they have resigned from a government institution. The same applies to politicians, who can only apply a year after they have resigned from politics.

Ma-Aerobics organises a fun walk for elderly women to improve health

Elderly and retired women from Thohoyandou Block F and the surrounding area enjoyed a health and fitness day, on Monday, 15 May. The event, which formed part of Mother’s Day this past Sunday, was organised by Ma-Aerobics, a non-governmental organisation, with Ms Adelaide Mashila as the coach and instructor.

The participants were taken on a fun walk, did some aerobics and received valuable tips on a healthy lifestyle by local doctors and specialists.

The 5km fun walk started and ended at Block F’s CTM Sports Centre, on to Block G, and all the way back to the sports centre. More than 50 women took part in this health exercise.

Granny Judith Mphephu (74) from Thohoyandou Block F, who also attended the

event, said that, after joining Ma-Aerobics at the CTM Sports Centre in the beginning of April this year, her health had been improving every day. “Before joining Ma-Aerobics, my right leg was swollen, but after just one month I am able to walk from one point to another,” she said proudly.

3-2 Victory for Magau Mighty Green

Magau Mighty Green registered a 3-2 victory over Gogobole Bucs in their Mathoho Tournament match that was played at the Tshiozwi Grounds on Sunday.

Mighty Green was clearly going to get a goal early on as good communication existed

between their defenders and their strikers. Their opening goal came via Amphaho Negota. He dribbled past a defender of Bucs after receiving a neat pass from Vusani Malima and beat the stranded keeper with a half volley.

Mighty Green scored their second goal via Mpho Mulaudzi, whose volley was too hot

for the Bucs keeper, Thabelo Siavhe, to handle. The score was still 2-0 when the referee, Vhutshilo Mafunisa, blew the half-time whistle.

As if victory was already certain, Mighty Green relaxed on the ball and started to display their individual skills, instead of playing as a team. They were severely punished for this. Bucs reduced the margin through Lutendo Thathaisa, following a defensive error by Sedzani Mulaudzi. Instead of using that as a wakeup call, the players of Bucs continued to play short passes within their danger area. The third goal of the match for Mighty Green came in the 64th minute. Rendani Luvhimbi received a pre-cooked pass from his teammate, Unarine Mamphaga, and caught Bucs’ keeper off guard.

Bucs increased the margin from the penalty spot after Rinae Munyai was pulled from behind inside the penalty area and the referee responded appropriately - Munyai converted to make the score 3-2.

Things are fast moving from bad to worse in the camp of Maindis Ladies FC. The team suffered another humiliating defeat in front of their home crowd when they lost 0-4 to TS Galaxy Queens in their Hollywoodbets Super League match that was played at the Giyani Stadium last Saturday. The defeat was the 11th for the Bungeni side in 13 matches this season.

Whether they will resurrect from the grave and manage to collect full points this weekend is something that remains to be seen. Maindis Ladies will travel to Pretoria on Sunday afternoon. Their match against the University of Pretoria FC will take place at the Absa Tuks Stadium in Pretoria.

Gogobole Home Defenders were far too strong for Mabaleng Hollywood when they overpowered them 4-1 in their Mathoho Tournament match that was played at the Tshiozwi Grounds on Sunday.

The game was one-way traffic from the onset to the bitter end, with Defenders dictating the terms. No-one was surprised when Defenders took the lead in the ninth minute. Their diminutive striker, Phungela Ndadza, was on target after receiving a neat pass from Unarine Ramavhuya.

Referee gets suspended by MLFA

The deputy secretary of the Makhado Local Football Association (MLFA), Mr Tshifhiwa Maphaha, confirmed that the association had suspended a local referee from participating in league activities, following allegations of misconduct. The misconduct includes, among other things, match-fixing, unethical conduct and soliciting a bribe before and during games.

The suspension follows a match between Mudimeli Pharma FC and Mutiti United Stars that was played on 4 April at the Mudimeli Grounds. Representatives from both teams reported that the referee

had stopped the match 14 minutes early, alleging that he had felt threatened. The referee complained that fans of the two clubs had threatened him and accused him of being biased.

The managing director of Pharma FC, Mr Matodzi Mahani, said that the referee had approached them later that evening. Mahani further alleged that the referee had said that he had been assaulted by one of Pharma FC’s players. He had then allegedly demanded a R400 bribe, for him to not report the matter.

Mahani said that he had recorded the conversation, which he had then sent to the league administrators.

Some of the club owners, who did not want to speak on record, said that the issue of

bribery had been reported to the MLFA on several occasions. They said that they were happy now, because one of the referees had been suspended and this would send a message to others that bribery in sport was not acceptable.

Mr Tshifhiwa Maphaha said that the MLFA stood for integrity in football. “Our football matches should not be decided on the gambling market, but on the football field. It is for this reason that MLFA has decided to tackle match fixing, unethical conduct and/or any corrupt activity head on, by implementing a zero-tolerance policy,” he said.

He said that the association had appealed to all teams to report any signs of attempted match-fixing or unethical conduct by referees immediately.

Rodadau FC beat Tshandama Young Stars to keep their title hopes alive

Although they were playing in front of their home crowd, Tshandama Young Stars could not absorb the pressure from Rodadau FC, who beat them 1-0 in their Sasol Women’s League match played at the Tshandama Grounds on Saturday.

The game resembled a typical derby, with both sides initiating promising moves from the middle of the park. Although Young Stars had difficulty coping with the tempo of the game, their playmaker, Mashudu “Mudagasi” Davhana, remained a shining star. Davhana was everywhere, dishing out some telling passes from the centre of the pitch, while at the same time playing as a full striker.

The fight for promotion to the Hollywoodbets Super League and to escape the relegation axe at the end of the season will continue this weekend among the teams campaigning under the banner of the Sasol Women’s League in the Limpopo Stream. Most of the matches will be played on Saturday. while only three are scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

After giving away vital points to Rodadau FC, to whom they lost 0-1 at the Tshandama Grounds last Saturday, Tshandama Young Stars are poised to bury Phomolong Ladies alive when they meet at the Lulekani Stadium in Phalaborwa on Sunday afternoon. Phomolong Ladies are still to win a league match to date. Their performance is deteriorating with time; Phomolong Ladies have conceded 35 goals in their last three matches.

A win for Young Stars on Sunday will revive the team’s hopes for promotion. The

Stars from Tshandama are currently lying in the fifth spot on the log standings with 10 points. Young Stars will pin their hopes on Mashudu “Mudagasi” Davhana and Oriswikela Mudavhi for goals.

Lacoste Morning Stars will host Masakona Liberty Experience at the Shayandima School Grounds. Morning Stars are still fresh from a 5-0 victory over Merwe United Ladies.

The pace setters, Rodadau FC, will have a date with Sealene Ladies at the Tshitungulwane Grounds outside Vuwani. Two for Joy Ladies will travel to Merwe village in the Malamulele area. Their match against Merwe United Ladies will be played at the Merwe Grounds. Real Mighty Ladies will entertain Sisters FC at the Shikukwani Stadium outside Giyani.

Fines for Safa Vhembe clubs that don’t protect referees

The disciplinary committee of the Safa Vhembe Regional League imposed heavy fines on several clubs during its sittings that were held at the league’s offices over the past weekend.

Ngwenani Young Chiefs were the hardest hit. They were found guilty on three charges, namely the assault on a match official, invasion of the pitch by supporters and threatening and intimidating match officials.

The case relates to an incident that took place during their league game against SMSA FC, which was played at the Tshedza School Grounds last month. The committee heard that Young Chiefs had assaulted the match official, Mr Mpho Mphigalale, during the game. Young Chiefs were ordered to pay a fine of R8 000 within 30 days, apart from the fact that they will forfeit the points for the match to their opponents.

SMSA FC were found guilty of failing to provide security for the match officials. They were ordered to pay a fine of R2 000 within 30 days.

Phylimak FC were found guilty of refusing to play their league match against Ghandlanani Golden Arrows and the failure to appoint alternative accredited match officials in the same match. A fine of R8 000 was imposed on them.

Ngovhela XI Experience were fined a total of R7 000 after they were found guilty on three charges, namely intimidating the match officials, causing the abandonment of their game against SMSA FC and failure to provide

adequate security for the match officials. The points for the match were awarded to SMSA FC.

Seven United Brothers were found guilty of causing the abandonment of their game against Maelula United Brothers and failure to provide adequate security for the match officials. The committee ordered them to pay a fine of R4 000 within 30 days. The points for the match were awarded to the opponents.

Khalavha Napoli had caused the abandonment of their game against Maelula United Brothers. A fine of R5 000 was imposed on them. They forfeit the points for the match as well.

Raliphaswa Black Panthers were found guilty of causing the abandonment of their league game against Mudimeli Western Bombers. They were ordered to pay a fine of R3 000. The points for the match were awarded to Western Bombers.

Mudimeli Western Bombers were found guilty of causing the abandonment of their game against Matanda Rockers. A fine of R3 000 was imposed on them, apart from the fact that the points for the match were awarded to Matanda Rockers.

Mandiwana Western Gunners were found guilty of assaulting the match official and causing the abandonment of their game against Mapakophele Fire Makers. A player of Western Gunners, Khathutshelo Ramalivhana, was singled out as the one who had assaulted the match official during the game. They were ordered to pay a fine of R8 000, while the points for the match were awarded to Fire Makers.

The players nearly spoiled the game when they started to demonstrate their dangerous skills towards the end of the first half. The situation returned to normal when the referee reprimanded Mosibudi Ngobeni of Rodadau with a yellow card.

Realising that their scoring chances were slim, Rodadau solidified their striking force by introducing Mmanoko Molele and sacrificing Mamie Rebombo.

The goal that earned Rodadau three significant points came in the 59th minute. Mohlao Rampya showed the keeper the wrong way after beating the offside trap.

Rodadau are still shining on top of the log with 18 points from seven matches.

Bare-knuckle fighters to honour “The Time Bomb”

The Musangwe organisers in the Vhumbedzi areas have arranged a Musangwe boxing tournament in honour one of the best boxers ever produced in South Africa to date - Phillip “The Time Bomb” Ndou. The tournament will be held at Tshifudi on Saturday, 20 May.

One of the organisers of the tournament, Mr Mafhungo Mphathele, who is also a bare-knuckle fighter of note, said they were proud of the fact that, before Ndou had become a professional boxer, he had been a bare-knuckle fighter. “We will also be honouring him for being the only African boxer to have fought the American boxing icon Floyd Mayweather,” he said.

Ndou, who grew up in Makwarela township, made international headlines in boxing when he represented South Africa at the 1996 Olympics Games in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States. Immediately after the Olympics, he was snatched up by the late training guru, Nick Durant. He won the South African Featherweight Championship when he stopped Jackie Gunguluza in the third round on 21 March 1999.

In a career spanning 18 years and five months, Ndou fought 42 times, with 37 wins and five losses. His boxing record stood at 37-5 (34 KO wins, 3 KO losses).

Mphathele is calling on all the bare-knuckle fighters and fans to attend the tournament on Saturday. It starts at 08:00.

VFA wrap up season with a victory

The head coach of Venda Football Academy (VFA), Mr Joel Masutha, is an ecstatic man. Not only did his team manage to escape the relegation axe, but VFA wrapped up their league programme with a bang. They beat Black Leopards 1-0 in their Motsepe Foundation Championship League match that was played at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Sunday.

During an interview with him shortly after the game, Mr Masutha said that taking the team from the relegation zone to the 11th position had not been

an easy task. VFA were fighting for survival when Masutha took over as the head coach of the team about three months ago. The team managed to win most of the games they played under his guidance.

Coming back to their game against Black Leopards, the former Chippa United head coach said that the game had been a typical derby. He said that for the strikers to penetrate Leopards’ defence had been difficult, although Lidoda duvha were reduced to 10 men in the early stages of the game.

“It was a tough road for the team, but we learnt a lot”

The teams affiliated with the Motsepe Foundation Championship League played their last league matches for the 2022/23 soccer season on Sunday. For many of the teams the season was a long and difficult one.

The chairman of Venda Football Academy (VFA), Mr Itani Munzhelele, said the season had been the most difficult one to date for his club. VFA finished their league programme in the 11th position on

the log standings with 38 points.

The team started the season with Mr Michael Loftman as head coach. The team’s performance in their first six matches was below par. That prompted the management of the team to terminate Mr Loftman’s contract. The former head coach of Uthongathi FC, Mr Simo Dladla, then took over as the new mentor of the team. Mr Dladla’s presence seemingly did not add any value to the team as the Thohoyandou side continued to donate significant league points to their opponents at home and away.

Realising that the future of the team was looking bleak under the guidance of Mr Dladla, the management then decided to terminate his contract, citing professional misconduct as their reason for parting ways with him.

As one of many ways to try and turn the team’s fortunes around, VFA appointed the former head coach of Black Leopards, Mr Joel Masutha, to the position of the head coach of the team about three months ago. Mr Macbeth Sibaya was his assistant. At that stage, the team was lying in the second-last

position on the log standings. The team’s performance improved dramatically under the guidance of Mr Masutha.

Mr Munzhelele said that they had done everything within their power to get the team promoted to the DStv Premiership Division this season, but that was not to be. Instead, the team was battling to move out of the danger zone for the better part of the season.
