Woede oor donkies se lot Deur Isabel Venter Die lot van 37 donkies wat in haglike omstandighede in die munisipale skut in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) aangehou word, het die afgelope week hewige reaksie vanuit die gemeenskap ontlok. ‘n Sakevrou van die dorp, me. Helena van den Heever, het die haglike toestande waarin die trop donkies moet leef verlede Dinsdag onder die koerant se aandag gebring. Sy het by die skut, wat in Industriastraat geleë is, gestop om ondersoek in te stel nadat sy ‘n dooie donkie in een van die kampies opgemerk het. “Die donkie het van die ellende gevrek; daar is nie kos of water vir hulle nie,” het Van den Heever gesê. ‘n Sekuriteitswag het glo, volgens Van den Heever, net

skouers opgetrek en vir haar gesê dit is nie hulle probleem waar die donkies kos of water kry nie. Daar kon vasgestel word dat die donkies op 24 September deur die Musina polisie vanaf Beitbrug gebring is. Almal was rondloperdiere wat ‘n gevaar veroorsaak het op die pad en almal was reeds in ‘n erg verwaarloosde toestand. Dit het eers later, met die ingryping van die plaaslike Dierebeskermingsvereniging (DBV), aan die lig gekom dat die dooie donkie gevrek het weens geboortekomplikasies. Dié verslag, waarvan die koerant ‘n afskrif gesien het, het nie die moontlikheid in ag geneem dat die donkie geaborteer het weens wanvoeding nie. (Vervolg op p.2)

Dié donkie is Dinsdag dood in die munisipale skut aangetref. Dit sou later aan die lig kom dat die donkie gevrek het weens geboortekomplikasies.

Khodobo is al vir meer as ‘n jaar in gesprek met die bestuur van die Makhado Munisipaliteit om hierdie regulasies tot uitvoer te bring. Verlede Woensdag het hy weereens die regulasies aan die skutmeester, ene mnr. Ma thonsi, en sy kollegas voorgelees en verduidelik. Dit was egter duidelik dat niemand by die mu nisipaliteit gretig is om die blaam of verantwoordelikheid te vat vir die skut nie.Mathonsi het werk ers wat opdragte nie uitvoer nie, blameer vir die toestande by die skut. “Almal doen net wat hulle wil en nie wat ek vir hulle sê om te doen nie,” het Mathonsi gesê. Munisipale woordvoerder mnr. Louis Bobodi het Dinsdag in antwoord op ‘n navraag ontken dat diere by die skut mishandel

Tydens die vergadering is die DBV ook die onderneming gegee dat ekstra waterbakke by die skut voorsien sal word. “Daar is beeste ook by die skut, maar ek kan nie na hulle én die donkies kyk nie,” het Helena gesê.

Vhembe manages to meet first deadline The Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) met its first deadline as required by AfriForum’s High Court order. The court order enforces certain measurable steps signalling a beginning, albeit small, in the mammoth task of restoring the water supply to Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and surrounds. VDM’s first deadline was 12 October, when they had to come up with an implementation plan for the clearing of vegetation along the route of the pipeline between the Albasini water works

Schultz, accompanied by Messrs Herman Smith and Lampie Schoeman, drove to Thohoyandou on 10 October to meet with Vhembe officials. “Following our initial disappointment that they had not yet read the court order, they corrected that and their subsequent response was such that they have taken all our calls,” Schultz said. AfriForum proposed some modifications to the implementation plan to speed up the process of clearing the vegetation along the Albasini line. “We would like to see the clearing after each phase, not with the purpose of ‘inspecting’ but to encourage and congratulate them on each completed phase,” AfriForum’s vice-chairperson, Mr Herman Smith, said. The court order states that the sixth borehole, in addition to the five newly drilled boreholes, has to be redrilled, due to its caving in. A drilling machine was spotted in the area near Rivier Street. The test results regarding the feasibility and qual ity of the five boreholes must be ready this week on 17 October. The designs of the infrastructure and pumps to link the first five boreholes to the reticula tion network have to be submitted by 31 October. In the meantime, the water situation worsens daily. “I have had water for only one day in Oc tober so far,” said Ms Anne-marie Kuhne, who is the first applicant in the high court order, with AfriForum as the second applicant. AfriForum urged the VDM to maintain effective, accurate communication. On Sunday, 14 October, it was communicated that the water should be back by 14:00, which did not happen, arousing the anger of residents. On 4 October, VDM spokesperson Mr Matodzi Ralushai was requested to comment in writing on their views and plans with regard to the court order, but no comment has been received to date.

Groep help Mutale-rivier skoon maak ‘n Groep vrywilligers het oor ‘n tydperk van vier dae naastenby 40 kilometer afgelê en 55 sakke vullis verwyder langs die Mutalerivier. Mapungubwe Heritage Route launched The premier, Mr Cassel Ma thale, said the provincial go vernment would inject more than R2 million into completing the Mapungubwe Museum and Interpretation Centre in the next financial year, so that research students could be accommodated . Besides preserving culture and artefacts, the move is also aimed at promoting tourism in the prov ince, Mathale said. “We want re searchers and scholars to do their archaeological research projects at Mapungubwe under one roof. In the past, some archaeological artefacts of Mapungubwe were kept at Wits University and the University of Pretoria, and our research students were forced to travel long distances,” said Premier Mathale.

Mathale was speaking over the weekend during the launch of the Greater Mapungubwe Heritage Route in Mapungubwe National Park. He was joined by the acting chief executive officer of the Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA), Mr Fixon Hlongwani, the MEC for Economic Develop ment, Environment and Tourism, Ms Pinkie Kekana, the Chief Whip of the National Parliament, Dr Mathole Motshekga, Vhembe District Executive Tshitereke Matibe and various mayors and traditional leaders. Mathale said tourism was one of the economic backbones in the province and urged the communi ties to promote the Mapungubwe Heritage Site. The opening of the Greater Mapungubwe Heritage route was

part of the 2012 Vhembe Carni val, where the district welcomed visitors from Zimbabwe and Botswana to the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site, the sacred Lake Fundudzi and the Dzata Museum. Mr Fixon Hlungwani urged residents of Limpopo to ex plore the cultural landscape and heritage hub of the Mapungubwe Heritage Site, as this will help to increase tourism along the route. “This is billed to be a major tour ism draw card to the province and will boost Limpopo’s domestic tourism. The major boost to us is our strategic location as we are a gateway to other parts of the con tinent. The success of the initia tive will be for the benefit of the entire country,” said Hlungwani.

Time is running out to enter photo competition It is once again time for the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror’s very popular calendar photo competition. The region’s photographers will have until 31 October to submit their entries. Prize money totalling R6 000 is up for grabs, with 12 winning pictures to be chosen for each of the year’s months. Winning entries will be published in an A2-format 2013 calendar, which will be used by the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror for marketing purposes. The calendars will also be sold to the public at a minimal fee.

Only high-resolution photos of sub jects unique to the Soutpansberg and surrounding areas will be considered for the competition. Wildlife photos are welcome, although the newspaper group would like to see more entries depicting the region’s cultural heritage, its people and landscape. The competition is limited to five entries per photographer, which should preferably be submitted in digital format. Cellphone or postcard-size photos will not be considered for the competition. All entries must clearly indicate who

he letter of Mr Timmy Khetani, as published in your newspaper, dated 12 October, refers. It is confirmed that Mr Naudé is not acting alone in the challenge in respect of the name change from Louis Trichardt to Makhado. The Chairpersons Association consists of an executive committee as well as 45 very prominent and influential chairpersons represent ing 45 organisations and all cultural groups in this area. Mr Naudé is acting as per mandate of the above organisations and cultural groups. The Chairper sons Association stands for good corporate governance in terms of the King’s Report 3, preserva tion of cultural heritage as well as reconciliation. We wish to assure Mr Khetani that the Chairpersons Association is also fighting for his right as individual citizen to be properly consulted as well as for his rights to have a transparent and hon est government with integrity. The Chairpersons Association also fights for his right to enjoy the cultural heritage of South Africa and not the destruction thereof. The name Louis Trichardt is part of our cultural heritage and had been used for more than 108 years. No election had been called in respect of the name change from Louis Trichardt to Makhado and the statement made by Mr Khetani that the majority wishes for the name change is there fore unscientific and, unfortunately, not correct. Our Shangaan members and friends, as well as all the other cultural groups such as the Indian people, Buysdorp people, the Afri kaans and English people, seriously differ from Mr Khetani that Louis Trichardt is part of Vendaland. The Shangaan people believe to the contrary that they had been living in the area before the Vendas did, which they say could be historically proven. No costs would have been involved if the name of Louis Trich ardt had not been changed unneces sarily. No reasons have been given yet as to why the name changed. Reasons that were mentioned were that Louis Trichardt was an apartheid activist (who lived 150 years before apartheid), that he was an imperialist and now that this is Vendaland and therefore it should

Therefore, the Chairpersons As sociation is not only fighting against the name change, but also for all the rights and implications associated therewith concerning your rights and duties as a good citizen. We cannot allow the selfish politicians of this country, who are not of a high standard, to rule just to their advantage and to the detriment of you as a citizen. The purpose of politicians is supposed to be to rule this country in the best interests of its citizens and not the opposite. Currently, the citizens of this coun try are being abused at the mercy of politicians with fancy promises in order to secure the wealth and excellent positions of power of these politicians. Maybe we as citizens should start to consider our positions in the Republic of South Africa intellectually, on an informed basis, and not only emotionally without any correct, factual basis. I find it HIGHLY UNFAIR to all the other Matric girls who ONLY have a FEW MONTHS left of school, who went through SO MUCH EF FORT with everything, just for this ONE SPECIAL NIGHT that they won’t ever be able to get back again! he matric farewell dress compe tition started off as a fun project just to give readers (and especially our online readers) an opportunity to view some of the dresses and show their appreciation. It was not meant to be a seri ous competition with an official panel of judges. (Maybe we should consider a more formal compe tition next year.) My personal opinion is that the girls all looked gorgeous and all of them deserved to be finalists. Whether you wore a R300 dress or a R30 000 dress, you looked stunning and thanks for going through the effort to make your night special. That said, we had to chose 40 semi-finalists and we’re very sad that some beautiful girls (with beautiful dresses) had to fall out. The comment about the girls not being in matric who were in the final selection has a lot of merit, but this is not prohibited by the (very few) rules of the competition. The competition is not limited to one school and thus can not make provision for the practices of a specific school. Louis Trichardt High School has a policy where only matric students are allowed at the farewell function. One must appreciate that there are a variety of reasons why the school decided to implement such a rule, but it is not standard practice. For us to make this rule applicable to all other entrants would have been near impossible to enforce. Let’s appreciate the beauty that the girls brought along and not get too serious about the finalists. There are no ugly flowers. - Editor

Klouter Kabouters hou Olimpiese Spele Klouter Kabouter Kleuterskool in Levubu het op 13 Oktober ‘n uiters suksesvolle mini-Olim piese Spele aangebied. Die beheerliggaam van die skool het dit goedgedink om die dag aan te bied, aangesien die Olimpiese en Paralimpiese Spele hierdie jaar plaasgevind het. Die doel van die dag was om

die kleuters van kleins af oor toewyding te leer, net soos atlete leer om altyd hul beste te gee. Klem is ook gelê op deurset tingsvermoë om vir die jongspan te wys dat harde werk nodig is om iets te bereik en dat hulle nie moet moed opgee nie. Die belangrikste was egter dat die kinders, ouers en oumas en oupas

Soutpansberg Gholfklub Die CVO Skool Vivo het op 16 Augustus deelgeneem aan die landswye Bybelkennis-kompetisie wat by Radio Pretoria se ateljees in Pretoria beslis is. Die skool het in die finale rondte teen CVO Gromar te staan gekom en met groot welslae die eersteplek in die kompetisie behaal. Dit is die eerste keer in die skool se geskiedenis dat kandidate van die skool na die eindrondte van die kompetisie deurgedring het en boonop met die louere weggestap het.
