Toe sê ek: ‘Mooi so!’ Baie keer, selfs in die kar, dan vra ek vir hom of hy weet waaraan dink ek. Dan sê hy vir my of ek vir hom,” het Yvonne gesê.

“Never a dull moment...” So beskryf Yvonne hul lewe saam. “Weet jy, ons het 55 jaar saam gehad en ons het drie lewens in een leeftyd ingedruk. Advokaat Thomas Langley, politieke strydros uit die vorige bedeling, is op Vrydag, 12 Oktober, in die ouderdom van 84 jaar oorlede. Dieselfde dag het Suid-Afrikaners afskeid geneem van oud-minister Pik Botha, een van Langley se groot politieke teenstanders in die apartheidsjare, wat in die ouderdom van 86 oorlede is.

Die Soutpansberg was vir dekades huis gewees vir die Langley-familie waar hulle op die plaas Ringer in die Waterpoort-omgewing gebly het. Dit was ook waar Langley oorlede is. “Hy het ‘n geruime tyd gesukkel met sy gesondheid.

Die afgelope paar maande het dit maar sleg gegaan,” het sy vrou Yvonne Dinsdag aan die Zoutpansberger gesê.

Alhoewel Langley ‘n gekwalifiseerde advokaat was en ook as advokaat gepraktiseer het, was sy groot passie die politiek.

Sy politieke loopbaan het oor meer as drie dekades gestrek, beginnend in die jare van die Natte en Sappe, deur die stormagtige stryd tussen die Nasionale Party (NP) en Konserwatiewe Party (KP), tot in die nuwe bedeling post-1994. Op plaaslike vlak het hy destyds die Soutpansberg-setel vir die KP opgeraap deur vir NP-kandidaat Heine Kruger van Tzaneen uit te stof.

Hy is ook ereburger van Louis Trichardt gemaak deur voormalige burgemeester Johan Moolman.

Langley het in 1966 die politiek betree as lid van die NP. “Hy was een van die jongste LV’s [Lid van die Volksraad] ooit om die Volksraad te betree,” vertel Yvonne. Die romanse met die NP sou egter nie hou nie. Hy was een van die

Volksraadslede wat destyds saam met minister Andries Treurnicht weggebreek het om die KP in 1982 te stig. “Toe die KP begin het, het ons ons goed gevat en geloop,” het Yvonne gesê.

Langley was ‘n formidabele politikus.

“Hy was verskriklik beginselvas en hy het nie van sy beginsels afgewyk nie. As ‘n ding vir hom skeef begin lyk het, dan het hy gesê: ‘Ek is klaar hiermee’ … die ding is, niemand kon hom koop nie,” het Yvonne gesê.

Burglaries continue to be a problem despite long sentences

While a couple of burglars were granted free accommodation in the country’s correctional facilities by the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court last week, others were trying their best to qualify for free accommodation as well.

On Sunday, 14 October at 23:05, two burglars broke into the Perfect Water shop at 33 Songozwi Street, Louis Trichardt.

The shop is owned by Johan and Leana van Rooyen. Johan said that the burglars knew exactly what they were looking for and where to get it. While the alarm apparently did not register at the security company, it did go off at the shop, and the thieves, including one with a very distinctive tattoo, were caught on the shop’s closed-circuit television cameras. One of the thieves waited outside “on guard”, said Johan, with a weapon in hand, which he was clearly prepared to use.

The thieves forced the rear windows of the shop open and gained access that way.

They then immediately made their way straight to where a cash sum of R17 000 had been locked up, bypassing a cellphone and a smaller amount of cash left on the shop counter.

Johan said that he had been away on Friday and that the cash had only been kept in the shop for that reason. Standard procedure was not to leave money there overnight, he continued. Investigations are currently being carried out by the security company responsible for the security and alarm system at the Perfect Water shop.

On a more positive note, two repeat offenders have finally been put behind bars.

The first, Nobert Mhlanga, was first

charged in Louis Trichardt with breaking into the home of Chris Ferreira and his family on 31 December 2015. A scuffle ensued when the family walked in on Mhlanga. He failed to get away with the goods he tried to steal after being overpowered and restrained by Ferreira and his son.

Shortly afterwards, the police arrived on the scene. While the police were questioning Mhlanga, he jumped up and managed to run away while still handcuffed.

Mhlanga was arrested once more on 17 March 2016 in Tshikota and also charged with breaking into the home of Magado Vincent Mulalo in Mampakuil on 7 February 2016. He allegedly stole a shotgun, ammunition, and a large sum of cash, among other items.

After a long process, judgment was passed against him, and he was found guilty on all charges, except the one of escaping arrest, of which he was acquitted.

He was sentenced to a total of nine years in prison in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on 9 October.

The second offender off the streets for now is Ncube Langton Mandoza Khosa, firstly charged with breaking into the house of George de Beer in Ruh Street in the late evening of 4 May 2017 and stealing a plasma television and a cellphone.

Directly after that, in the early hours of 5 May, he broke into Chantelle van Heerden’s home at Kennington Lodge and made off with another plasma television, a laptop, a tablet, a cellphone, a hard drive and cash. Khosa then finished off his thieving spree by breaking into Delmarie Marais’s house in Mampakuil and stealing two butcher’s knives, a laptop, a bottle each of wine and vodka, and finally, some

washing powder.

Khosa was subsequently arrested and, with judgements handed down in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court against him on 10 October, he received sentences of three, four, and two years respectively on each count of housebreaking, not to run concurrently. He will therefore serve a total of nine years in prison for his crimes.

She soon found out that this was easier said than done as, at that time,no specialised products were for sale in Louis Trichardt.

She had to make regular trips to Polokwane or Pretoria to stock up on suitable pantry basics, and that worked out to be expensive and time-consuming.

Yolanda sticks to healthy eating even though she is not intolerant to any food. She likes to keep intakes of grain, sugar and gluten to a minimum in her household, and so for her, living gluten-free is a lifestyle choice. Both Hestie’s family and Yolanda’s were thriving on gluten-free living, and so they decided to make this lifestyle easier for everyone in town.

The De Beers Group was also asked for comment on their involvement with the MMG’s proposed mine. From the above it is clear that something is happening but definitely not on the grand scale that Mr Mammba is marketing his mine launch as. To find out what the real story behind the mine is, the newspaper tried to contact Mr Mammba through several channels. An Internet search pointed to the MMG’s Facebook page. The last entry, asking people to ‘like’ another page, was made on 12 August.

On the page, the MMG’s postal address is listed as Private Bag X0000, Louis Trichardt, with a Johannesburg phone number. It would, however,

seem that this number either does not exist or is not in use anymore as it does not even ring when dialled. The Facebook page also lists an e-mail address for Mr Mammba, as well as a link to the MMG’s website. When one clicks on the website link, an image appears of mining equipment with a message “Coming soon. Few days left”. No other information is supplied, which is strange, considering that another website, also boasting an impressive two-page CV of Mr Mammba, describes the MMG as a company serving most of the world’s largest steel-and-mining companies.

On 9 October last week, the Zoutpansberger sent a media enquiry to Mr Mammba (to the e-mail address listed on his Facebook page) asking him to comment on his proposed mine, the fact that the DMR says he was only granted a prospecting licence and De Beers’ response that they did not know anything about his mine. At the time of our going to press on Wednesday, the newspaper had received neither an acknowledgement of receipt nor a reply.

The only cellphone number the newspaper managed to obtain for Mr Mammba also did not yield any results as this number does not exist or is not in use anymore.

Bus and trailer go up in flames on N1

Two local farm owners, Melony Coetzee and Johan Rootman, were among the first to arrive at the scene of a burning bus on the N1 close to the turn-off to AFB Makhado on Sunday morning.

It began in the early hours of the morning at around 04:00, said Rootman. Onlookers could only look on helplessly as first the bus and then the trailer attached to it burned out com-

pletely.

While some witnesses felt that the non-arrival of any help in the form of firefighting equipment at the very least was frightening, it was noted that all the bus occupants had managed to exit it without injury, even though they lost all of their possessions, both in the trailer and in the bus.

Several powerful explosions took place on board as the fire progressed, and it would not have been safe for anyone to

try and retrieve any of their valuables.

Rootman said that the actions of the Bandolierkop SAPS had been much appreciated when they arranged for a bus to take the stranded passengers, who had been on their way from Zimbabwe to Cape Town, back to Musina as many passports had also gone up in the blaze.

Rootman said that the scene had been secured and that all debris from the fire had been cleared quickly by the authorities.

‘n Plaaslike argivaris, Pétria de Vaal-Senekal, is vir die derde agtereenvolgende jaar genooi om deel te wees van die “International Archival Day” in Trieste in Noord-Italië.

Die jaarlikse byeenkoms in Noord-Italië word gereël deur die International Institute of Archival Science of Trieste and Maribor. Dit is ‘n gesamentlike projek van die onderskeie institute in Italië en Slowenië en strek oor twee dae. Hierna volg ‘n Archival School, waar studente in die argiefwese opgelei word.

“Sover ek weet betaal hierdie studente nie vir die opleiding nie,” het Pétria die afgelope week gesê.

Die organiseerders van die byeenkoms maak dan staat op vrywilligers van die verskillende lande om te help met die opleiding. “Ek is gevra om hierdie jaar daarmee ook te help, meer spesifiek ten opsigte van die projek waarmee ek (vrywillig) besig is: Die vertaling van argief- en rekordbestuursterme in Afrikaans,” sê Petria.

Die oogmerk van die vertalingsprojek waarmee Pétria help is om ‘n internasionale aanlyn woordeboek te vestig. Pétria is een van die internasionale medewerkers wat verlede jaar genooi is om te help om die argiefterme te vertaal.

In haar studieveld is Pétria ‘n bekende outeur en spreker. Twee van haar artikels het reeds in die gesaghebbende Atlanti joernaal verskyn. Dié tydskrif bestaan sedert 1991 en jaarliks word die beste argivale navorsingsartikels gepubliseer.

Die tema wat Pétria vanjaar wil uitlig, is die uitdagings wat ervaar is met die organisering van die argiewe by die taalmonument in die Paarl.

Pétria is nou betrokke by dié projek en help steeds met opleiding.

Een van die grootste struikelblokke vir Pétria is tans om borge te vind wat die besoek aan Italië moontlik kan maak. Die organisasies wat dit reël maak staat op skenkings van individue en besighede. Die organiseerders betaal vir die verblyf en etes, maar daar is nie genoeg borgskappe om vir die vervoerkostes te betaal nie.

Indien daar plaaslike persone is wat ‘n bydrae wil lewer tot die projek, is hulle welkom om haar direk te skakel by 082 555 1672. Die beoogde besoek aan Italië vind plaas vanaf 18 tot 25 November.

nota maak van die Hervormde-gemeente Louis Trichardt se basaar op Vrydag en Saterdag, 26 en 27 Oktober.

By die koek- en poedingtafel gaan daar iets lekker vir almal wees, en vir diegene wat hou van meer sout as soet, kerrie-en-rys, hamburgers, worsbroodjies en vele meer. Die tradisionele pannekoek sal ook verkoop word.

Member of local Indian community passes away In Memoriam

As part of the celebrations of 2018 as the centenary of the year of Nelson Mandela’s birth, the Department of Education held a poetry competition for Grade 8 and 9 learners. They had to write a poem based on the theme “Peace”. Grade 9’s Motheo Moruwe (right) and Abigail van Benecke (left) of Louis Trichardt High School won the competition for English first language and Afrikaans first language respectively. They received certificates, trophies and prizes at a function in Mokopane on 28 September. They also had the honour of having their winning entries included in an anthology.

Mrs Renuka Devendra Patel, who passed away peacefully on the evening of 24 September at the Limpopo Mediclinic in Polokwane, will be greatly missed by her family and the community of Louis Trichardt.

Fondly known as Baboo, she generously shared her love not only with her family but with the entire community, serving and helping all who needed it.

A pillar of the community, she was always involved in several events such as weddings, prayer ceremonies and festival celebrations. Always present, she would play leading roles in these as well as the festive celebrations of the Hindu community.

Baboo’s brother Nitin shared memories of his charming sister’s life. He told the Zoutpansberger that she was born at Elim Hospital in 1944 to Mr Kishorlal and Mrs Hansaben Mehta. The Mehta family were early pioneers and settlers in Louis Trichardt. They operated a thriving merchant and trading company in Kruger Street until the late 1960s, when the business started winding down and most of the Mehta family began leaving South Africa for other parts of the world.

Renuka moved to Mumbai in India with her parents and baby brother, Mr Nitin Mehta. It was always their father’s dream to

return to Louis Trichardt once his children were grown up and settled, but unfortunately he passed away prematurely in 1976 before his dream could be realised.

“On numerous subsequent trips to South Africa, the family was welcomed openly by the love, generosity and affection of Mr B D Patel (Babookaka), a doyen of the community,” says Nitin. “That began to draw the family closer to the Patel (MACS) family.” Travelling back and forth between India and South Africa continued for many years, and it was during multiple visits with the Patels that the love story of Renuka and Devendra bloomed. Renuka was reluctant to move back to this country as she did not want to leave her mother and brother alone in Mumbai, but, says Nitin, love conquers all. After their wedding in Mumbai in May 1980, Renuka finally moved back to Louis Trichardt and the Patel and Mehta families united into one big family.

Renuka is survived by her husband, Mr Devendra Baboobhai Patel, daughter Ms Minalli Patel, and her extended family.

Nitin says his sister took it upon herself to look after all of them, mothering them, and showering them with unflinching love and care. “Baboo, even though you are not with us physically today, we know you are somewhere

Book a table for SPCA’s annual auction now Animal Welfare

The Louis Trichardt SPCA wants to remind everyone of its auction coming up on Friday, 2 November, at the Northgate Lodge.

The price is R2 000 per table, seating 10 people, or R200 per person, and arrival time will be 18:00 for 18:30. This price includes the most exciting part of the event, namely the auctioning of unique and special items. “There will be a great show by Jak de Priester and a DJ dance after the auction,” said the SPCA’s Alicia Thomas, “and as well as platters of snacks for everyone, extra food will be on sale too, with a cash bar available.”

Residents can help these friendly faces at the local SPCA by supporting their annual auction on 2 November.

Some of the very special items up for auction include 200 macadamia trees. Exciting about this, Alicia says, is that they are immediately available without the usual four-year waiting period and have been grafted by PE Thomas Boerdery of La Montagne Farm. Renostermaan is the name of another very special item, according to Alicia. People get to take part in the fight against rhino poaching with Rhino Connect, who have identified the need for regular patrols on private game reserves during periods of the full moon; a time associated with a high likelihood of poaching. This auction item includes accommodation from 7 to 9 December 2018 in Vivo, and all activities during the weekend, such as a tracking course, observation skills, full-moon patrols and rhino monitoring.

A great opportunity for a family holiday by the ocean is another auction item that Alicia says is not to be missed out on. The winner of this auction item will get a seven-night stay in one of the three eight-bed houses at Makisure Lodge at Barra, Inhambane, Mozambique, unless otherwise arranged, and valid for any time for one year from the date of the auction.

She says one might take advantage of learning to dive before heading out to Mozambique with the next auction item from Scubaversity at their facility in Roodepoort for two people. Scubaversity is an accredited PADI 5-Star-Certified Dive School and Career Development centre offering courses from Bubblemaker through to instructor and staff instruction.

“We have to keep some surprises for the evening,” says Alicia, “but there are other very exciting items and speciality hampers, including something for the ladies. Three mystery prizes are up for grabs too, and the list goes on and on. This is an evening not to be missed. Book now!”

The story about Capy the miracle dog

Anne Jacobs remembers clearly the day a year ago, while driving to Venda University, when she saw a tiny puppy wandering down the road.

“It was the middle of nowhere,” says Anne, “and that little dog was just walking down the road in the most appallingly sad state. I couldn’t just drive past and leave him.”

Anne stopped and picked up that very sick puppy, and so

began his miraculous journey to the strong and loving dog that he has become only one year later. He now goes by the name of Capy.

Anne tells of how Louis Trichardt vet Nada de Villiers made a huge effort to save Capy. The little dog did not have much of a chance to begin with. He had biliary and glandular fever, as well as terrible mange with a tertiary skin infection. In the hands of a determined vet, over the course of four days of care, which in-

cluded shock treatment, Capy slowly healed and went to his new home with Anne, where he now remains happily.

Anne and Capy shared many heart-warming quotes and thoughts with the Zoutpansberger, including these words of wisdom from Albert Einstein: “The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.”

Anne and Capy encourage everyone to try to never look on and do nothing.

Terwyl baie inwoners ‘n lekker blaaskans geniet het tydens die kort Oktober-skoolvakansie, al was dit met Jan Tuisbly se Karretjie, was daar ‘n paar inwoners wat moeite gedoen het om die lot van ander beter te maak.

Danksy goeie ondersteuning ten opsigte van skenkings aan die #JyKanHelp uitreik na blanke plakkerskampe het 35 voertuie met kos en klere die naweek van 6 Oktober na Gauteng vertrek.

Onder die voertuie was ‘n bakkie en sleepwa met bykans twee ton se kos, klere, skoene, beddegoed, bababenodighede en speelgoed wat bymekaar gemaak is vanuit die Polokwane, Louis Trichardt en Musina omgewing.

Die ander kamp wat besoek is, was Sonskyn Heuwel naby die Bon Accord Dam waar 240 mense woon. “Die kamp is baie meer georganiseerd in vergelyking met Sonskyn Hoekie. Dié met krag betaal R700 per maand. Dit is die geval by al die blanke plakkerskampe,” het Annette gesê.

Volgens Annette het meeste van die blankes wat daar beland hul werk verloor. “Sommige mense kom wel weer daar uit en kom weer op hul voete, maar ander verloor hul selfvertroue en moed. Wat my die meeste gevang het, was die aantal kinders wat daar grootword,” het Annette gesê.

Annette het gesê dat alhoewel die kampe haglik voorkom, is dit skoon en relatief netjies. “Party van die hout pondokkies is versier met optel-ornamente en plantjies. Daar was ook baie honde wat in relatiewe goeie kondisie was. Baie van die mense het nie kom gesig wys nie, wat te verstane is as mens dink hulle trots is geskend,” het Annette gesê. Annette is van mening dat daar na projekte gekyk moet word om hierdie mense te bemagtig. “Dalk iets soos om die dames te leer om lappieskomberse te maak met toepaslike skenkings vir dit,” het Annette gesê.

Intussen, het Annette gesê, het hulle verneem dat daar twee soortgelyke kampe aan die ontstaan is in Polokwane. “Ons het dus besluit dat wanneer ons dit weer doen, ons eerder ons eie gebied gaan bystaan,” het Annette gesê.

School’s water shortages a thing of the past School News

The new reservoir at Louis Trichardt High School was given an official mini-opening last Thursday.

Attending the opening were members of the parent-teacher association (PTA) Brian du Plooy and Quinton Thompson, together with Wynand Louw. Wynand was representing the newly opened division of his fencing and thatching business, CWL Flexi Dams and Linings.

“We wanted to emphasise the school’s appreciation to Wynand for his very generous donations and help in the building of this project,” said Du Plooy, “and also many, many thanks for the lining of the new reservoir.”

The new dam holds 140 000 litres of water, and will supply the entire school complex from now on. “The lack of proper water supply here has caused a lot of suffering over the past eight years,” said Du Plooy. “The hostels needed a solution to the water outages, as did the flats on the premises here for teachers.”

The PTA also wants to say a huge thank you to Bekmar Louis Trichardt for their much-appreciated commitment to this important project and for all their help and support in opening their shop to the school so many times after hours to help.

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.” - John 18:31. n unsaved man was one of the disciples, a man who, doubtless, believed the words of Jesus and thought Him to be the Messiah. I mean Judas, who, with a traitor’s hand, sold his Master. His intellect had been convinced, but his heart had never been renewed.

Another notable believer of this sort was Simon the sorcerer (Acts 9:9), who believed because he saw the signs and wonders done by the apostles, but as he also sought to make gain from godliness, he remained ‘in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity’ (Acts 8: 23), and never became ‘a disciple indeed’ (Acts 8:21).

There is a greater one than these, even the devil. We read that ‘the devils also believe, and tremble’ (James 2:19). They hold the faith and feel something of the power of it, for they tremble, which is more than modern critics do. Devils know that Jesus is the Christ of God, for they had on occasion confessed it and have borne witness to the gospel in the open streets, shouting after the preachers of the Word, and yet, with all their knowledge and a sort of faith and with an apprehension which leads to trembling, they remain devils and make no advance towards God. Beware of that faith that is a mere intellectual movement, that does not control the heart and life. To come to faith through a cold argument and to feel no spiritual life is a poor business. You want a faith that leads you to an entire reliance upon the person of Jesus, to the giving up of everything to Him, to the reception of Him as your Saviour and King, your all in all.

Laerskool Messina het op Vrydag, 12 Oktober, hulle jaarlikse interhuis swemgala aangebied.

Tydens die geleentheid is ‘n 18-jaar-oue rugslagrekord verbeter deur swemmer Ethan Smidt.

Hy het ook geskiedenis gemaak deur die skool se eerste o.8 seun te word wat die gesogte junior Victor ludorum trofee kon inpalm. Die junior Victrix ludorum is ingepalm deur Kylie Groenewald, terwyl Mi-né Verster die senior Victrix ludorum was en Marco van der Merwe die senior Victor ludorum. Die Piranahs is ná afloop van Laerskool Messina se interhuis swemgala op 12 Oktober gekroon as wenspan. Die waarnemende skoolhoof, me. Lucinda Vorster, het ná afloop van die byeenkoms haar dank uitgespreek teenoor almal wat die dag moontlik gemaak het, asook me. Natasha Verster, die organiseerder. Die borge van die wegspringblokke die dag was Messina Toyota, Limpopo Bonded Warehouse, Gateway Truckstop, Martie Swarts en Eric en Marina Liebert.

Die borgskappe van die blokke is gereël deur Carinne Nel, terwyl dit deur past. Jimmy Venter geïnstalleer is. Messina Toyota Knights het die medaljes geborg en Ronel Pieterse van Talisman die vlaggies, ysies, water en gazebos. Dank is ook uitgespreek teenoor die personeel en ouers van die skool. Die winkel is oop op Maandae en Donderdae van 11:00 tot 16:00, Dinsdae van 09:30 tot 13:00, Woensdae van 13:00 tot 16:00 en Vrydae van 08:30 tot 14:30.

Die Louis Trichardt 4x4-klub het op Saterdag, 13 Oktober, weer hulle gewilde jaarlikse Gruisgat 4x4-kompetisie buite Louis Trichardt aangebied. Alhoewel dit koud was, was die weer nie genoeg om deelnemers weg te hou nie. Afgeneem is die dag se wenners in die onderskeie klasse. Van links na regs staan Sandra en Eddy Leeson (vroueklas), Morné en Altie van den Heever (gemodifiseerde voertuie), CW Burger en Christa Otto (baanbeamptes), Kobus Otto en Ruanda Erasmus (super gemodifiseerde voertuie) en Jareth Otto en Henry Coetzee (standaard voertuie).

Regs: Deelnemers aan die Louis Trichardt 4x4-klub se jaarlikse Gruisgat 4x4-kompetisie moes hard werk vir ‘n podiumplek. ‘n Paar deelnemers het egter tong-in-die-kies opgemerk dat daar gelukkig weer ‘n paar Toyotas was om die “ander manne” uit die moeilikheid te sleep.

Dank is uitgespreek teenoor die volgende borge wat die dag moontlik gemaak het: Premjee, Louis Trichardt Bolt & Nut, Talisman, Voltex, PD Otto Elektries, Light World, Tradepost, Vleispot, Vleismark, Burco, Bearing Man, Altenique, RPM Motors, die Zoutpansberger, Northgate Lodge, Autozone, Blush en Ocean Basket Louis Trichardt.

Inwoners moet beslis nie vir die jong Lente Schutte, ‘n Graad 7-leerling van Laerskool Louis Trichardt, vlak kyk nie. Sy en haar perd Wiejandie Lance het op 29 September deelgeneem aan die Sandveld Uithourit oor 80 km in Noordwes. Nie net het sy deelgeneem nie, sy het ook as algehele wenner van die uithourit uit die stryd getree.

Sowat 100 ruiters het in die kinder-, junior-, liggewig-, standaard- en swaargewig-klasse deelgeneem. Lente en haar perd het die uithourit in drie ure en 37 minute voltooi, sowat 30 minute vinniger as die amptelike Springbok tyd.
