Philani Nkwalase, in ‘n verklaring gesê.

We need to make a change now. I firmly believe in the education of our children and our communities to create a cleaner and greener environment.” Ambassador Matjila said this past Friday, at the UN Security Council’s open debate on addressing the impact of climate-related disasters on international peace and security, that “South Africa has with very great concern noted the erratic nature and veracity of natural disasters. It is clear to us that climate change is a global sustainable-development challenge that can only be addressed realistically if we do so collectively, and through a rules-based multilateral regime that is based on science, equity as well as differentiation of action and support between countries with very different national circumstances. Climate action needs to be scaled up dramatically, while protecting and furthering the development gains of developing countries and eradicating poverty.” Matjila went on to say that “Africa, therefore, stands in full solidarity with other regions similarly affected by natural disasters, such as those Astrid Fourie leads the Eco Gecko Club. We look to the UNFCCC [United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change], its Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement for policy direction and leadership on climate change and also refer to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.” Many people say that climate change is a myth. Astrid explained that this is not true. “Let me first differentiate between global warming and climate change. Global warming is the increase of the Earth’s temperature due to greenhouse gases. This leads to climate change, which is a long-term change in the Earth’s weather patterns. It is not a myth. It is getting hotter. We feel it every day. The weather patterns have changed. You just have to watch the news to hear of the various weather disasters to hit - from Tsunamis to droughts to wildfires. South Africa is experiencing long-term droughts, erratic rains, severe heatwaves and dry spells. The impacts of climate change will affect every aspect of our economy and will affect the vulnerable most severely, leading to an increase in diseases, starvation, poverty and a lack of energy and water. Agriculture and fisheries will also be affected by drought and an increase in acidity levels in the waters. Tourism will be affected as ecosystems begin to die out because of increases in temperature or lack of food supplies. The list goes on. Each area will impact on the next.” If any local businesses want to join this global movement, of which Louis Trichardt is very much a part, contact Astrid Fourie at Ridgeway Independent School at 015 151 0111.

might as well be adventurer Dave van Graan’s motto in life. Dave’s boots are currently kicking up dust on Namibia’s northern border with Angola, where he is attempting to walk all the way from Ruacana to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, a distance of about 1 600km. No, he is not mad. This Louis Trichardt resident has struggled with a very painful back injury for many years. In 2013, Dave received specialist treatment and, for the first time in many, many years, Dave could enjoy a pain-free life. To celebrate a pain-free life, Dave took to walking long distances. In 2014, the now 62-year-old undertook his first challenge by walking from Musina to Louis Trichardt. He then upsized his next challenge by walking from Louis Trichardt to Church Square in Pretoria, and then he finished it off by walking all the way to Cape Town. This was during 2014 en 2015. At the end of November 2017, he embarked on his next epic venture, walking all the way from the Orange River to the Kunene River on the Angolan border over a distance of 1 870km. Celebrating a pain-free life is not the only reason why Dave walks. He also does it to create awareness regarding the conservation of southern Africa’s rhino population. This is an issue very dear to Dave’s heart. This time around he is creating awareness around the extraordinary work African Anti-Poaching Services (AAPS) is doing. Dave’s epic journey over the hot, dry, dusty plains of northern Namibia started on 15 January when he set of from the town of Ruacana. The Zoutpansberger caught up with Dave on Wednesday morning via WhatsApp. By that time, Dave had already completed just over 420km or one quarter of his trek to Victoria Falls. He overnighted at Mpungu and by 09:40 had
a freedom that you do not experience in normal life,” said Dave. Since starting his walk 15 days ago, Dave said he had experienced little to no drama. He has especially high regard for the people of Namibia for their friendliness. “Even the truckers have now started stopping to find out why I am walking and offering me something to drink. So yes, the message is getting out about anti-poaching,” said Dave. He added that he was especially touched when a farm worker donated R20 to the anti-poaching cause. “I took a video of this and will later talk about making a donation on my Facebook page,” said Dave. Being on the road for so long does, however, become lonely. “I miss my people, but I also miss Boerekos a lot. Rice, stew, with sweet pumpkin and Boer beans! My mouth is watering as I am typing this message to you,” said Dave. The weather
After a massive rainstorm on Monday evening, Dave said that the normally hot, dry and dusty plains of northern Namibia had, almost overnight, turned into a sea of green. He took this picture of a herd of goats that came to say “Hi” in search of some grass. Photo supplied.

The current Malaria Risk Map for South Africa as in 2018 shows that at-risk-for-malaria areas now include the whole of Vhembe as well as areas such as Alldays and Lephalale. Map: National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).
Louis Trichardt now part of low risk malaria area By Jo Robinson
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) announced in December that some changes had been made to the risk areas for contracting malaria since the last map had been released in 2013. On the latest map (2018), Louis Trichardt now falls within the low risk area, from which it had previously been excluded. The entire malaria risk area has spread further towards the centre of Limpopo. Large swathes that were previously no risk areas are now at low risk, and some areas previously in low risk sections are now at moderate risk. The entire Vhembe District currently falls in a risk area. The NICD states that the borders of risk areas should be regarded as approximate and that sporadic transmission may occur outside designated areas because infected malaria mosquitoes are sometimes transported outside the usual risk areas. This can cause what is known as “taxi or suitcase malaria”, which is infection outside of areas listed as at risk, especially at this time of year when people have recently returned from their holidays in high risk areas. For a period of four to six weeks after returning home after possible exposure, people are encouraged to take note of the onset of flu-like symptoms. These include fever, headache, chills or aches in muscles and the body. If these or similar symptoms arise, immediately see a medical practitioner to be tested for malaria. As at the end of October 2018, more than 16 000 cases of malaria were reported across South Africa

and 110 deaths reported for the season. Cases of malaria spiked in 2017 after an annual average of 7 600 reported cases for the decade preceding. Malaria is endemic to Limpopo and the season for it runs from September to May. The NICD recommends using non-drug measures in low risk areas at this time, such as mosquito nets and repellents. If people are travelling through moderate risk areas, they recommend the use of prophylactic medication; however, this must only be done on the advice of a medical practitioner. Local pharmacist Hanlie Nagel told the Zoutpansberger that they were well prepared for the malaria season and were well stocked with the relevant medications. The drugs doxycycline and atovaquone-proguanil have now been labelled as Schedule 2, which means that they can be purchased at pharmacies without prescription. Nagel said, however, that consulting a doctor for advice on when and how to take preventative medication was important, and that these two drugs were not necessarily what your doctor would prescribe for you, depending on your own medical history. Dr Casper Venter told the Zoutpansberger that taking these drugs without medical advice was a very bad idea. They can have extremely dangerous side-effects for certain people as well as interact with other medications. While emphasising the importance of seeking proper medical advice before taking any drugs, Dr Venter said that even though no need existed to panic about the new risk areas, increased vigilance was important to catch malaria as early as possible. He said that the sooner treatment started the better. “If you are worried about malaria here, or planning to travel anywhere where diseases are endemic, consult your doctor first, rather than attempting to self-medicate.” In a media statement last year, the spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Health (LDH), Neil Shikwambana, said that “the LDH is encouraging communities and health-care providers to be aware of malaria and not to delay seeking treatment and testing for malaria. Limpopo reported an increased transmission of malaria during 2017, with 17 765 cases reported between January and December 2017. This increase was part of a general upsurge of malaria in the area. In order to reduce the transmission of malaria, the LDH has 42 malaria teams operational to conduct the spraying of houses. Since August 2017, a total of 964138 houses have been sprayed. As there were higher levels of transmission towards the end of the summer in 2017 (May 2017), steps were taken to continue with spraying later into the malaria season”. Currently, malaria spray teams are still actively spraying in high risk communities in Mopani and Vhembe. “Since the beginning of 2018, a total of 5 482 malaria cases were reported in Limpopo, down from the 6 079 cases reported over the same period in 2017. All health facilities in Limpopo are prepared to deal with malaria cases. All hospitals also have access to the latest malaria treatment regime available. If malaria is not diagnosed and treated in time, it can be fatal,” said Shikwambana.

Minister gives Triegies technological boost By Kaizer Nengovhela
The Department of Communications, headed by Deputy Minister Pinky Kekana, partnered with the private sector to donate four laptops, 130 tablets, a television set and free Wi-Fi connectivity via fibre optic cable to Louis Trichardt High School last Thursday. Kekana said the connectivity to the Internet would give teachers and learners in rural areas opportunities to stay abreast of the latest teaching trends, guide learners about career choices and facilitate entrepreneurship and social development. Kekana said that her department aimed to give The Deputy Minister of Communications, Ms Pinky Kekana (left), and other guests present the schools access to information and communication laptops and tablets to the pupils and principal of the school. technology (ICT) in order to strengthen and expand the learning and teaching processes and to enable the sharing of educational resources and improve administration. She said that her department was working closely
with the Department of Basic Education to roll out this access to ICT to all schools as part of fulfilling the mandate of the department to provide universal access to technology. “We obviously cannot complete this massive task on our own, so partnerships with private companies are vital to our success.” She said that their partners had already commenced with the installation of the wider network infrastructure and good progress had so far been made. According to her, 1 210 schools and clinics in Vhembe will benefit from this broadband provision. The principal of Louis Trichardt High school, Mr Louis Cilliers, applauded the donors and government for their donation and said the laptops, tablets and Wi-Fi would help the school and learners a lot. He appealed to other companies to follow the giant step taken by the donors to plough something significant back into the community.

A 16-year-old Grade 11 learner at Eric Louw High School in Musina, Henko Erwee, said the presentation of six new laptops, high-definition television, free internet and WiFi connections to his school would enhance learning, while at the same time transforming traditional learning methods into e-classrooms. The handing over is part of South Africa Connect, an ambitious national broadband policy by the government that was adopted in 2013 and aims to deliver widespread broadband access to the people of South Africa. The national project was launched in Musina by the Deputy Minister of Communications, Pinky Kekana, last week. Partners in the project include the Department of Communications, Broadband Infraco (BBI), MTN, the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), the Africa Society for Cyber Security Awareness (ASCSA), SENTECH and the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa (USAASA). When handing over the equipment, Kekana said the launch came at the right time, when the government was rolling out the Special Economic Zone initiative in Musina. “Local political leadership, community stakeholders and the education fraternity should
embrace this initiative because it will assist this place to become a smart city. You must take advantage of this initiative because, as a border town, it will assist you to cope well with innovative changes in this fourth-industrial-revolution world. The fact that we are launching it here in Musina should make you proud as other provinces will follow suit after you have experienced the many benefits of connectivity.” Kekana said the initiative would prepare local learners to become future innovators. “We are proud of this school, which has been producing a 100% pass rate for many years in succession. Our visit today is part of saying thank you to the educators, learners, parents, school-governing body and all stakeholders who contributed towards your success. However, we urge you to protect the equipment against theft and
vandalism.” The principal of Eric Louw High School, Mr Johan Minnie, said the school was grateful to have been chosen as the launching pad for the massive national connectivity project. He said the presentation would encourage them to work hard and he promised they would take good care of the donated equipment. Mr Andrew Matseke, the chief executive officer of Broadband Infraco (BBI), a state-owned company that is a major stakeholder in the project, said that 1 210 sites existed in the Vhembe District that needed to be connected, the majority of which were schools and health facilities. “We have so far connected 60 sites and are currently working on an additional 50. This means that, at the end of March this year, we will have connected a total of 110 here in Vhembe,” he concluded.
MTN’s regional marketing manager, Ms Lungelo Jama (right), and the Deputy Minister of Communications, Ms Pinky Kekana, hand over some of the six laptops to the principal of Eric Louw High School, Mr Johan Minnie.

Round Table Zoutpansberg 66 held their annual induction dinner over the December holiday season. During the event, a new committee was elected for the Louis Trichardt team for 2019. In front, from left to right, are Shannon Venter (vice chairman), Rudi Meissenheimer (treasurer) and Hendré Labuschagne (clubhouse convener). At the back are Dirk Meissenheimer (chairman) and Frans Vermaak (secretary). Photo supplied.
Once a man turns 40, he is no longer allowed to be part of Round Table. Many of these men, however, still want to support Round Table and thus they join the “prestigious” 41ners club. Two of Round Table Zoutpansberg 66’s members, outgoing 2018 chairman Riaan Smit and Tabler Graig Leeson, became 41ners during the Table’s annual induction dinner in December. During the same event, existing 41ner Andrew Pienaar received the award for 41ner of the Year for 2018. Pictured are in front, from left to right, Riaan, Andrew and Craig. At the back is incoming chairman Dirk Meissenheimer. Photo supplied.
It was a proud moment for Round Table Zoutpansberg 66 member Frans Vermaak (right) when he received the trophy for Tabler of the Year from outgoing club chairman Riaan Smit (left). During Round Table Zoutpansberg 66’s annual induction dinner in December last year, the Table’s Photo supplied. award for Project of the Year went to Hendré Labuschagne (right) for hosting the Table’s golf day. The money collected through this initiative goes towards supporting local charity and service initiatives. Handing Hendré his trophy is outgoing chairman for 2018 Riaan Smit. Photo supplied.

Farmer’s Market this weekend at local SPCA Charity
The well-known Farmers Market that always used to be held outside of Louis Trichardt will now be held closer to the town centre at the SPCA premises on the Vondeling Road once a month. The first one will be this Saturday from 9:00 to 12:00. Alicia Thomas of the SPCA said that there was “plenty of room for stalls galore under our trees!” People are welcome to book their spots now.

The proposed settlement is subject to certain conditions and must be approved by the High Court before it comes into force. ZOUTPANSBERGER, 1 FEBRUARY 2019
25 Years ago this week
Above: In this week’s trip down memory lane it would seem that criminals were just as busy back then as they are now, and that possibly sometimes statistics should not be taken at face value. In a period of just under three weeks in 1994 six housebreakings were reported by businesses in town. Statistics for Makhado for the much longer period of 2017 to 2018 are 24 robberies at non-residential premises were reported, which, when you compare the time frames are not more than those in 1994. While it would appear that break-ins are decreasing, it is more likely that Louis Trichardt residents often do not report housebreakings these days because they happen so often, so the true figures are not known. Residents are also more concerned about the violence of crimes committed locally now than by how many bicycles have been stolen.
Above: On the sporting front, 25 years ago Faizal Ayob and Istiyak Ahmed beat Chris and Kassie Mattheus in the final of that year’s double wicket competition walking off with well-earned trophies and lots of pizza.

He settled of finding a trading route to the east coast probably resonated with Potgieter and he partly explored the Portuguese routes in the direction of what is today known as Inhambane. (Just as a side note – When Potgieter visited the Soutpansberg in the period between May and June 1836, he travelled with JGS Bronkhorst and nine others. They travelled on horseback with two light carriages and some oxen. They completed the journey in 21 shifts. The total distance was some 450 miles, or almost 725 kilometres. They travelled on average just over 23 kilometres per day.) By Anton van Zyl

Fast-tracking to 1846
The complete photo shows Hendrik Potgieter next to what is described as his (last) wife, Susanna Maria Duvenage (widow Van Emmenes), apparently taken in Delagoabay around 1851. really a photo of the commandant-general. The comment quickly drew a response from another reader, pointing out that it was quite possible for such a photo to exist, seeing that the first reference to a photographic studio in South Africa was already made in a newspaper advert in the Eastern Province Herald in October 1846. Potgieter died in December 1852, some six years later. To find an answer to the question is, however, not that simple. One must consider various factors, such as the type of photographic processes available before 1852, the movements of Potgieter (was he close to a photographic studio?) and the movement of traders during the time. It becomes a detective story, where one must search for clues to prove or disprove a theory.
here with his extended family early in 1849. He had missed the initial trek to the far north, because he first had to deal with internal struggles in the then Boer Republic, which he had helped establish. Jan Valentyn Botha acted as temporary leader and led the 48 families to the area just south of the mountain, where they arrived on 2 May 1848. Potgieter and the rest of the families joined them a few months later. Potgieter is probably the best known of the early Voortrekkers in the far north of the country but was also highly controversial. He was born in the Graaff Reinett district in the Cape Colony on 19 December 1792. In his early years he was involved in two of the frontier wars in the Eastern Cape. He was very outspoken about his contempt for British rule and in 1835 he led a group of Voortrekkers to
For the purpose of this article, we will have to skip a decade, ignoring several wars that Potgieter was involved in and also not going into the details of the conflict between him and other Voortrekker leaders such as Piet Retief and Andries Pretorius. Potgieter and his companions went further north, to what was later to become the Transvaal, while Retief and Piet Uys trekked to the then Natal. We will also skip the 1838 incident where Voortrekker groups were attacked in Natal and Potgieter was asked to come to their aid. Potgieter and his men were led into an ambush and had to flee. In certain circles, Potgieter was blamed for this failure and some even referred to him and his men as the Vlugkommando (fleeing commando). This did not do much to improve relationships between Potgieter and some of the other Voortrekker leaders, and he moved to the north where, at the end of 1838, he established a town, later known as Potchefstroom. When the British took control of Natal in the 1840s, Potgieter was determined to live above the 25th parallel south, away from English rule. He decided to establish the new Boer Republic of Transvaal in April 1844, with him as leader. The year before that he visited the then Delagoa Bay to foster good relationships with the Portuguese and establish trading routes.
ZOUTPANSBERGER, 1 FEBRUARIE 2019
In an effort to have a strategic location closer to the coastal route, Potgieter helped establish the town of Andries Ohrigstad in 1845 near the western Drakensberg and made this the capital. Throughout this period, however, he was plagued by internal power struggles and had to deal with resentment from certain groups of people not impressed with his style of leadership.
Another look at the photo At this point we need to return to the main subject of the article – the photo. The Internet may very well be a maze where one can quickly become lost among the billions of sites, but it has many “road maps” and tools that are useful when trying to search for facts. The photo of AH Potgieter is used by many websites focusing on history, including Wikipedia, Geni.com and even Maroela Media. A very useful trick is to do a reverse-image search to see who else has used the photo and to check whether this does not provide a higher-resolution picture with additional information. This worked quite well, and a few other sites provided additional information and a more complete photo, showing a man and a woman sitting next to each other. One had a description saying that the woman next to Potgieter was his second wife, the widow Van Emmenes. On the Wikitree site, further information can be found relating to the photo. Here the statement is made that the woman in the photo is probably not Elizabeth Helena Botha (who died in 1841). The date that the photo was taken is estimated as 1851 and the origin of the photo is mentioned to be the Boer War Museum in Bloemfontein. The photo was apparently taken in Delagoa Bay. Pinpointing which of Potgieter’s wives is the one in the photo is no simple matter. One source indicates that he was married four times and had 17 children (two of whom died at birth). The genealogical sites,
The photo that is commonly used on sites such as Wikipedia as that of the commandant-general Andries Hendrik Potgieter. however, differ as far as the names of the wives are concerned. In such cases, reverting to the biography of Potgieter, written by his great-grandson, Carel Potgieter, and NH Theunissen, which was published in 1938, is useful. They reckoned that he was married five times; first in 1821, but the name of the woman is not known. She died with the birth of their second son. In 1824, he married Helena Elizabeth Botha, a widow. She died on 7 March 1841, only a few hours after the birth of their sixth child (some sources say the 13th child, but this is debatable). Later that same year, he married the widow Bronkhorst. She died either at the end of 1842 or at the beginning of 1843, after the birth of their daughter. (The sources contradict each other here.) In mid-1843, Potgieter married for the fourth time. On this occasion he pledged his devotion to the widow Catherina Elizabeth Jacobs (born Erasmus). Their first child was born on 5 January 1844. According to Potgieter’s biography, she died around 1849, but another source states that she died on 25 May 1852. A few months later, on 7 July 1852, he married the widow Susanna Maria Duvenage in Zoutpansberg Dorp (Schoemansdal). Some sources, including the biography, state that she was the widow of Gert Lourens van Emmenes and the marriage took place in 1850. If the year 1846 is used as a starting point for photography
in South Africa, the woman in the photo can be either Catherina Elizabeth Jacobs or Susanna Maria Duvenage. If the photo was taken in Delagoa Bay, Duvenage (Van Emmenes) may be excluded, because at that stage Potgieter was already very ill and would not have been able to travel that far. The photo itself is also worth a closer look. At first glance it appears to be what is referred to as a carte de visite, a format that became very popular in the mid- to late 1860s. The only problem is that this format was not available when the commandant died in December 1852. In next week’s edition we shall try and unravel more clues, hoping that this will bring us closer to an answer. We shall look at the history of photography in South Africa and specifically the processes used by the photographers of the day. We also need to find out whether Potgieter visited areas where photographers would have been active during the time. Lastly, we need to look at the possibility that a roaming photographer visited the Soutpansberg in the early 1850s.

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 1 FEBRUARY 2019
- 079 516 8303

adly, it is not true or altogether honest of the authorities to create the impression that it is very difficult to take action against the real people responsible for the large-scale damaging and even destruction of public property by the plastering of abortion poster all over town. Most of these posters are in any case also illegal. The real culprits are not the ignorant youngsters desperate for the few cents paid to them to do the dirty work. (Some of them cannot even read the posters they paste). Those who are responsible have the audacity to print their phone numbers (but not their legal status) on the papers. The authorities have the ability to trace such criminals and to have them sued in court in a way that will make it difficult to carry on with this totally unacceptable action. By the way, your newspaper published a picture some years ago about a police and municipal spokesperson making a statement about how they were going to act against this scourge...)

regular intervals. Irvin Moropo showed that he is not only good with the ball in hand, but also knows how to handle the willow. He scored a patient 27 runs from 54 balls before he was caught off the bowling of AJ Fourie. Unfortunately for Irvin, he had little support from his fellow batsmen. None of them could achieve double figures and the last wicket fell with the total on 77. For Louis Trichardt, Wouter Smit did most of the damage with the ball, demolishing the top order in the process. He took 3/9 in seven overs. Leon Olwage took 2/10 in three overs and Vimal Shah took 2/6 in 3.1 overs.

very bright. Dewald Joubert (34), Leon Furstenburg (13) and Warno Smit (16) then put up a bit of a fight. Irvin Moropo, Giyani’s star bowler, claimed three more scalps and at 78/8 Louis Trichardt were in serious trouble. Jandré Hancke (14) stood his ground, but it was left to Riaan Gerber (16 not out) and Vimal Shah (20) to add substance and take the score to 128. The last wicket fell in the 23rd over. Irvin Moropo was the pick of the bowlers, taking 5/52 in seven overs. Wayne Alexis Weller-Blaber also made a useful contribution, taking 3/29 in 5.2 overs. Giyani’s batting innings started on an uncertain note, with wickets tumbling at
