Clubs in the dark By Isabel Venter
The Makhado Municipality has yet to clarify what the future holds for Louis Trichardt based sport clubs. Several weeks have passed without the municipality responding to questions put to them regarding the relocation of the clubs’ facilities to make way for developing Makhado Crossing into a regional shopping mall. As construction of the new mall progresses day by day, so too is confusion increasing on the relocation of the town’s sport clubs. It was first reported that all the sport clubs east of Makhado Crossing would have to be relocated to make way for the new mall. The facilities to be moved included the jukskei, rugby, soccer and netball fields, as well as the squash club and the adjacent hall that houses the gymnastics, badminton and wrestling clubs. When the development of the mall finally kicked off in January this year, it was made clear that only the rugby, soccer and netball fields would be affected by the current phase of construction and demolition works. The squash club and gymnastics hall would not count among those clubs that needed to be relocated, it was stated. Ever since the development of the mall was announced, it has been an onoff affair for the gymnastics and squash clubs. Initially both clubs would have been relocated to an area next to the show grounds. The clubs then made a proposal to rather be relocated to an area adjacent to the municipal swimming pool in Anderson Street. When ground clearing started in Janu-
ary this year it was made clear at stakeholders’ meetings that the relocation of both facilities will not be necessary. In recent weeks, however, rumours would suggest that it is already a done deal and that both facilities will have to relocate. It has, however, been extremely difficult to get to the bottom of these rumours. The representatives of the gymnastics clubs said, when speaking to the newspaper, that as far as they are concerned it has always been a done deal that they would have to relocate. They were, however, not sure exactly by when they would have to relocate. Their neighbours, over at the squash course, however, were shocked to learn that their relocation was on the discussion table again. As far as their representatives were concerned, there were talks of relocating but that it was dismissed when it was revealed that the mall’s development would not include their property. So who is right? This remains to be seen as the Makhado Municipality remains mute on the situation. Not only were they repeatedly asked to clarify the matter, but they were also mute as to questions regarding the current state of the rugby club. The rugby club representatives have also indicated that they are in the dark about what is going on with their relocation. The only information they have, stems from what was discussed during the meetings that were held in January and February. During these meetings, the rugby club was informed that there were temporary plans in place to facilitate their relocation. As soon as the ground clearing is finished, it was indicated to the club, their club house will be demolished up to
the pavilion. This means that the club will still have grass to play on, but no spectator stands. For this, Masingita (the developer) proposed temporary stands and a mobile container-based bar and clubhouse. Ground clearing was scheduled to be completed by the end of April, with Masingita expressing the hope that by then they will have started to lay down the new rugby fields east of the show grounds. The rugby club told the newspaper last week that they sincerely hope that this would still be the case. Ever since then, their enquiries and concerns have fallen on deaf ears, both at the municipality and with Masingita. The club has indicated that they have consulted with their legal representative to assist them dealing with the Makhado Municipality in so far as it concerns the club’s existing lease agreement. The club has not been asked to sign a new agreement. This, coupled with the uncertainty of their relocation, said the club, could force them to take legal action in the form of a court interdict to halt Masingita’s works so that the paperwork can first be finalised. In the meantime, the newspaper still awaits clarification from the Makhado Municipality. Apart from all the follow-up questions, municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi was also asked to arrange a meeting with the relevant people working on the project at the municipality. The meeting request was forward to him on Thursday, 12 April. He this week stated that he was out of the office on Monday and Tuesday. One of the burning questions remains how Council can allow the sports facilities to be demolished, even though the clubs still have legal lease agreements in place with the municipality?

Robot Elektries was vir dekades lank bekend in Louis

Now is the time to get vaccinated Health Warning
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Wednesday issued a warning that the influenza season is approaching. The influenza season in South Africa occurs in the winter months and is expected to start in the coming weeks. On average the season begins in the first week of June. The NICD, however, stated that in past years, the season has started as early as the last week of April and as late as the first week of July. A severe influenza season was experienced in the United States of America and Europe in the winter of 2017 to 2018. “A severe season elsewhere in the world does not mean that South Africa will necessarily experience a severe season in 2018. The severity of a season is due to a combination of factors including the circulating influenza strains, previous immunity in the population and spectrum of underlying illnesses and age distribution of the population. The NICD monitors the progression and severity of the influenza season through its surveillance sites throughout the country to provide real time information on season progression,” said the NICD in a press release.

It is clear that influenza should not be taken lightly. “Annual influenza epidemics result in an estimated three to five million cases of severe illness, and about 290 000 to 650 000 deaths globally. In South Africa, influenza (commonly known as flu) kills between 6 000 and 11 000 people every year,” said the NICD. According to the NICD about half of those deaths are in the elderly, and about 30% in HIV-infected people. The highest rates of hospitalization are in the elderly (65 years and older), HIV-infected people and children less than 5 years old. Pregnant women are also at increased risk of hospitalization and death from flu infections. “People with chronic illnesses like diabetes, lung disease, tuberculosis and heart disease are also at increased risk of being hospitalized from the flu. During the flu season in South Africa about 8 to 10% of patients hospitalized for pneumonia and 25% of patients with flu-like illness (fever and cough) will test positive for influenza,” said the NICD. The NICD said that vaccination is the most effective strategy to prevent influenza. “Getting the flu vaccine can reduce flu illnesses, visits to the clinics or to doctors rooms, missed work and school due to flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations. Vaccinating people with higher risk of severe flu directly protects them from flu infections,” said the NICD. They added that vaccinating pregnant women has been shown to provide protection to both mother and baby during the flu season. HIV-infected adults without severely weakened immune systems respond well to the vaccine too. Vaccination, said the NICD, is also recommended for individuals aged 65 years and older, as well as individuals with chronic illnesses like diabetes, lung disease, tuberculosis and heart disease. According to the NICD, influenza vaccine for the 2018 season is currently available at public health facilities and at pharmacies. “Since it takes about two weeks after vaccination for protective antibodies to develop, it is recommended that people get vaccinated as soon as possible to ensure that they are protected before the influenza season starts. The best time to get the flu vaccine is before the season starts (March to June) but getting it later will protect individuals during the rest of the season. Because influenza viruses are constantly changing and immunity from vaccine lasts for about a year, it is necessary to get vaccinated each year before the influenza season,” said the NICD.
The face of the Bushveld north of the Soutpansberg is set to change forever, should government, mining companies and private enterprises have their way. The latest development venture is the proposed Mutsho Power Project. The project is to be located on the remainder of the farm Du Toit 563 and remainder of the farm Vrienden 589, located approximately 43km south of Musina and 40km north of Louis Trichardt in the Musina municipal area. Mutsho Power (Pty) Ltd’s project comprises the construction and operation of a baseload coal-fired combustion power station and associated infrastructure, including a power station with up to a 600MW capacity on a footprint of approximately 350ha in extent. The power will be generated by utilising supercritical circulating fluidised bed boiler technology, making use of direct dry (air) cooling methods. It will also make use of dry ash disposal methods with a zero-liquid effluent discharge facility. According to the Mutsho Project EIA report, coal for the power station will be sourced from the Makhado Colliery, to be developed approximately 20km south-east of the project site and transferred to site via road or rail. Environmental consultants Savannah Environmental this week advertised Mutsho Power (Pty) Ltd’s intent (see page 11) by inviting residents to take part in their Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and public participation process. A copy of the report is available for review and comment at the Musina/Nancefield Public Library (3 Ralph Small Street, Nancefield), the Louis Trichardt Public Library (Erasmus Street, Louis Trichardt), and the Makhado Centre of Learning (Tanga Farm, along D745) from 13 April to 15 May 2018. The report is also available for download on www.savannahsa.com. The due date for written comment is 15 May 2018. Bushveld residents might be thinking to themselves: What next? In 2016, amidst huge fanfare, Cabinet approved the Makhado/Musina Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Shortly afterwards the Minister of Trade and Industry, Rob Davies, announced that an investment of more than R40 billion was expected for the proposed SEZ for the establishment of an energy and metallurgical industrial park. A Chinese based company Shenzhen Hoi Mor Resources Holdings Ltd signed a cooperation agreement regarding the Musina/Makhado SEZ with the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA) in Beijing. The company stated that it aims to establish an energy and metallurgical industrial park, consisting of power, coking, ferrochrome, ferromanganese, ferrosilicon, pig-iron metallurgy,
lime, steel and stainless-steel plants on an 8 000ha piece land near Mopane. The project was purportedly said to create 20 800 local jobs. As with any development, there were those who supported it and those who opposed it. At this stage, however, the hype about the SEZ has died down with not much happening on the ground. Then there is mining company Coal of Africa’s attempt to get their Makhado Colliery into production. The company has since changed their name to MC Mining. At the end of last year the company announced that they would apply for certain amendments to their existing environmental impact assessment (EIA) report through a subsidiary company, called Baobab Mining and Exploration Pty Limited (Baobab), to make provision for road transport, rather than railway transport. Road transport, instead of railway transport, needed to be considered as a result of the downsizing of the Makhado Mine now known as Makhado Lite. According to estimates, this would mean that a coal truck will be travelling on the N1 to Musina every 21 minutes, 24 hours per day, if the mine becomes operational. At present the Makhado Project holds an executable mining right. At the beginning of the year, all that stood in the way of the mine becoming operational was the final authorisation of the amendments to the EIA report and the lifting of a suspension on the water-use licence. Indications are that the mine will come into operation despite pressure groups like the Vhembe Mineral Resources Forum trying to put a stop to the activities. At this stage it would seem that all these proposed developments will eventually become reality, despite public objections. It is obvious that there is something bigger at play and that pressure group’s resistance would end up being nothing more than a futile exercise. Why, you might ask? The answer is easy. All the above developments in some way or the other influence each other. They are not isolated ventures. They all seem to form part of a bigger singular picture and that is to see the area north of the Soutpansberg develop into an economic hub. According to Savannah Environmental, the Makhado Lite colliery, situated some 20km away, will supply the Mutsho Power Project with coal. Official documentation also indicate that site selection of the Mutsho Power Project was specifically done to be in close proximity to the proposed Makhado/ Musina SEZ. It remains to be seen how landowners and residents would react to this latest proposed development venture. In the meantime, Savannah Environmental has invited all interested and affected parties to attend an open house meeting to be held on Thursday, 3 May, from 15:00 to 18:00 at the Makhado Public Library in Louis Trichardt.

Heidi-Lene was vir amper meer as ‘n maand bewusteloos gewees.

Is jou siel gered? - 079 516 8303

God - if God intended some harm for me, could they remove His harm Or if He (God) intended some mercy for me, could they withhold His mercy?’’ QURAAN 39: 42 Explanation of the verse Be mindful of God and He will protect you; be mindful of God and you will find Him ever with you. Turn to God in times of ease and He will be with you in with times of difficulty. If you ask anyone for anything, then ask God; if you seek help from anyone, then seek help from God. Know that even if the entire nation were to come together to do you some harm that God has not decreed for you, they will never be able to harm you, and if they were to come together to do you some good that God has not decreed for you, they will never be able to do that. Strive for the sake of God with thankfulness and firm conviction, and know that in patiently persevering is much goodness for victory comes with patience, a way out comes from difficulty and with hardship comes ease. Alfred “King Donut” Matamela will be in action at the South Coast Bike Fest at the end of April.
Tshiheni’s biking hero at SC Fest Motorcycling One of the star attractions at this year’s South Coast Bike Fest is Alfred Matamela, a former resident of Tshiheni Village. “King Donut”, as he is affectionately known, will be showing off his legendary moves on his Yamaha R1 and MT10 during the festival which is taking place at Margate from 27 to 30 April 2018.
The “biker” from Venda has become a national legend and an inspiration for many young “petrol heads”. He is currently the South African brand ambassador for one of the world’s
best-known motorcycle brands, Yamaha. In an interview with Daily Sun, Matamela explained that he fell in love with cycling way back in 1978 when he was still a young boy growing up in Tshiheni Village. In 1983, a year after he had moved to Johannesburg, he exchanged his bicycle for a new motorbike, a Honda CD200. Matamela started what was probably the first motorcycling school in Soweto in 2008. The school, near Maponya Mall, aims at promoting motorcycling in the townships where it has always been regarded as a “white thing”.
Matamela also helped form the Soweto Pathfinders Motorcycling Club in 2007. Matamela mentioned that the motorcycle “culture” is fast changing and there has been a huge increase in black women riders. He reckons motorcycling used to have a tough image, but even this is changing. The bike clubs have evolved and became more involved in communities, undertaking social responsibility initiatives and charity work. On a question about how many traffic tickets he has collected, he answered “none”. “I’ve never had a ticket. I comply with the law,” he answered.
gy based on SAAB and MIRA tuning. “I can honestly say that we’ve sold a couple of the D20s and have not had a single complaint. Not a rattle, problems with fuel consumption or complaints about a misfire - nothing!” said Rootman. The D20 is placed to compete against small family cars like the entry level Volkswagen Vivo and Ford Figo. “The D20 has everything, including electric windows, park assist, driver and passenger airbags, digital air conditioner and even a USB and AUX radio – really an exceptional little car,” said Martie Venter, new vehicle sales manager at BB Mount Fuji. Other standard features include electrically adjustable and foldable side mirrors, safety cage body construction, side and curtain air bags and a high-end BOSCH ABS and EDB system.

Motoring News Jaguar’s E-Pace showing teeth in compact SUV market

R403 900 ONS VERKOOPSPAN
Jaguar recently introduced their new E-Pace, the company’s first compact SUV, into the South African market. It might be small, but it is sure to be a big hit when it comes to comfort and performance. A couple of weeks ago the newspaper took the entry level E-Pace S for a spin around the block and was pleasantly surprised by it. Not only does it look and handle extremely well for a small SUV, but when it comes to power, the 2-litre turbocharged diesel engine packs a big punch. According to Mr Gerhard Smit, sales executive of Jaguar Land Rover in Polokwane, the E-Pace will especially appeal to the young executives and the young moms with children. “Firstly, it’s all about safety,” said Smit. To offer reassurance and information, standard driver assistance features include lane keep assist, driver condition monitor, rear camera and front and rear parking aids. For optimum safety, the E-Pace has also been engineered to include a wealth of systems, including dynamic stability control and emergency brake assist. There are, however, a host of other safety features that come standard in the new E-pace. One of them is the pedestrian air bag in front of the E-Pace. Same as the Volvo, the E-pace also breaks automatically should a pedestrian walk in front of the vehicle. Clever sensors on the mirrors also warn you if the vehicle crosses the white line in the road by buzzing the steering wheel. Inside the E-pace, one is surrounded by the comfort and luxury finish all Jaguars are known for. The dashboard sports an easy-to-use 10-inch touch screen display easily accessible to the driver from where you can plot your next destination on the GPS or pump up the volume on a kick-ass standard sound system. From here you can also select your driving mode, which include Dynamic (Sport), Comfort and Eco mode, the latter which encourages fuel-efficient driving by reducing throttle sensitivity and selecting more economical engine mapping. It also reduces fuel consumption by minimising the energy demands placed
on the engine by climate control and audio systems. A display on the touchscreen provides vehicle data and driving tips. Although it is an optional extra, the panoramic sun roof is a definite must, coming in at an additional R16 100. Smit explains that the sun roof “opens up” the interior which some might consider a little on the small side. Having said this, there is enough leg room in front. “I’m almost two metres tall and fit behind the steering wheel with ease,” said Smit. As for the rear seat passengers, there is ample space, although Smit admits Photographed at Jaguar Land Rover Polokwane are, from left to right, Mr George Janse van Rensburg (marketing that for a two-metre-tall person it manager of the Zoutnet group of newspapers) and Mr Gerhard Smit (sales executive at Jaguar Land Rover Polokwane) might feel a little cramped for space. with Jaguar’s first ever compact SUV, the new E-Pace. One should, however, remember that this is a compact SUV and not in the H/v Burger & Rissik Str, same class as the much larger and Louis Trichardt more expensive Range Rover and Tel: 015 516 0284/5/6 Land-Rover Discovery. From the outside the new E-Pace is a real eye-catcher. It looks unmistakably sporty, with its bold honeycomb mesh grille framed by LED headlights with signature ‘J’ blade. To add an extra dash of style – as well as better visibility and safety at night – optional matrix LED headlights feature distinctive front and rear sweeping directional indicators. The new E-Pace is placed to compete against formidable rivals like the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and in a lesser way against the Volkswagen Tiguan. “The base line E-Pace comes in at just over R600 000,” said Smit. The E-Pace sports a nippy 2 litre turbocharged diesel engine delivering 132kW of power at 4 000 rpm and 430Nm of torque at 1 750 rpm. You might not be able to tow your six-bed caravan with it but, said Smit, the E-Pace can with ease tow a trailer of up to 750kg.” All this power is seamlessly transferred to the ground through the E-Pace’s automatic 9-speed transmission. Words cannot really explain the Michael Maynier Willie Venter race-car-like acceleration of the 082 702 6701 079 344 2737 E-Pace, nor its race-car-like hanEttie Sadiki Hilbert Sevhugwane dling through corners. The Mayor of Musina, Cllr Mihloti Muhlope said that the establishment of new businesses in Musina will help to advance the municipality’s vision of becoming a city soon. Muhlope was addressing business people, stakeholders and invited guests during the ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official opening of the Tiger Wheel & Tyre franchise in Musina last Wednesday. “As a provincial growth point, we need more businesses to operate here to strengthen our economic backbone. There is no doubt that Musina needs a big, healthy dose of business competition. We have always maintained that if we want to build a strong and prosperous economy, we must be more competitive.” She added that it is inspiring to note that the implementation of the multi-million-rand Special Economic Zone programme is in progress. “The timing of opening this business is a well calculated move as it will assist the municipality in realizing the Special Economic Zone project. More importantly, we are also grateful for the employment opportunities that this project will create for our local people. This initiative will also serve as a catalyst for further growth and development of our town.” She urged business people to partner with the municipality in fast tracking service delivery. According to her, the people are waiting for much-needed services, but due to limited resources, the municipality cannot meet all their obligations at once.” The Managing Director of Musina Tiger Wheel & Tyre, Mr Raju Vansia thanked the municipality, his business partners and family members for playing a role towards the achievement of the establishment of the business. “This is not all about money, but it’s about community development and bringing services closer to where people stay. Indeed, Musina will never be the same again.”

078 598 7761 of die CVO Skool Zoutpansberg by tel. 082 878 7148.
