Twee maande nadat ‘n besering op die rugbyveld die 15-jarige Koben Hofmeyr van Louis Trichardt gedeeltelik verlam gelaat het, staan hy en sy familie vas in die geloof dat hy weer sal loop. Koben het op 19 Mei as kaptein van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se 0.16-rugbyspan teen Hoërskool Warmbad uitgedraf. Hy het tydens die wedstryd ‘n ernstige nekbesering opgedoen. Koben is in die Groenkloof Hospitaal in Pretoria opgeneem. Die dokters het bepaal dat sy C6-ne-

kwerwel uitgeskuif het en dit moes met behulp van twee operasies weer teruggeplaas word. Die besering het egter tot gevolg gehad dat Koben slegs 60% longfunksie het en verlam is in sy polse en hande, asook in sy onderlyf. Presies ‘n maand ná Koben se besering is hy op 20 Junie na die Muelmed Medikliniek se rehabilitasiesentrum oorgeplaas, sodat daar met rehabilitasie begin kon word. ‘n Maand later, het Koben en sy ouers baie om oor opgewonde te wees. “Alles wys daar is iets ondertoe,” het pa Trompie Woensdag aan die Zoutpansberger gesê. Pa Trompie en ma Annelize, wat beide ‘n slag weer by die werk moes uitkom, se opgewondenheid was te danke aan die feit dat Koben op 14 Julie sy een groottoon kon beweeg, alhoewel dit met stimulasie was. “Hy kon ook sy linkerbeen ‘n klein bietjie beweeg. Dit beteken die spiere aan die kant van sy been reageer,” het Annelize gesê. Op 17 Julie kon hy selfs sy eie skoene aantrek. “Daardie is goeie tekens. Die moontlikhede word al hoe sterker en beter vir hom,” het Trompie gesê. Trompie het egter verduidelik dat dit 18 maande sal neem voordat hulle spesifiek sal weet wat die omvang van die skade aan Koben se rugmurg is. Dit is hoe lank dit sal neem vir die swelling en bloeding om te verdwyn. Maar hulle het reeds hoop. “Onthou, hulle praat van ‘n complete and incomplete besering. The Levubu police are investigating the circumstances that led to a horror crash which claimed the lives of three people who died on 11 July. The accident occurred along the R524 road between Louis Trichardt and Thohoyandou near Ha-Ratombo farm at about 15:40. Three vehicles, namely a truck, sedan and bakkie, were involved in the crash. Vieruur in die middag is hy eers klaar. Dit is dwarsdeur die dag, so ons sal moet opvang [skoolwerk] as hy terugkom,” het Annelize gesê. Hulle is egter nie te veel bekommerd oor Koben se skoolwerk nie. “Die hoërskool het klaar gesê hulle sal planne maak om hom te akkommodeer. Sy onderwysers het op hulle beurt gesê hulle sal uit hul pad uit gaan om hom te help. Van hulle het al na hom deurgery om hom te help ... ons het eintlik ‘n ongelooflike skool,” het Annelize gesê. Sedert Koben se besering was hy nog nooit weer by die huis nie, aangesien hy in hierdie stadium nog nie so ver mag ry nie. “Dit is wat verlede naweek vir ons so spesiaal gemaak het. Hul mikpunt is dat Koben homself optimaal kan help teen daardie tyd,” het Annelize gesê. Intussen het hulle begin

Opinions vary on government’s new smoking law By Jo Robinson

As with the rest of the country, residents of Louis Trichardt feel just as strongly either for or against the proposed new 2018 bill dated 9 May – the Draft Control of Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems. From the bill, some ways these laws will make a difference is that “there will be no smoking in an enclosed place within a certain distance to a place where smoking is prohibited, or enclosed workplace, or in a public conveyance. No smoking in any motor vehicle when a child under the age of 18 is present and there is more than one person present in that vehicle. No smoking in enclosed common areas of a multi-unit residence or at health facilities excluding rehabilitation centres. No smoking in a private dwelling if it is used for commercial childcare activity, domestic employment, or for schooling or tutoring. There will also be no advertising, promotion, sponsorship, distribution, and display of tobacco products and electronic delivery systems such as pipes and electronic devices, and components of those products or systems.” Using vaping devices or e-cigarettes is considered smoking under this law, so the same rules and penalties will apply to anyone doing this in any of the places now out of bounds. Comments from Zoutpansberger readers on Facebook show that some feel that the government should be concentrating on more serious issues while others agree that this law is a good one. One reader who is not a smoker suggested: “Concentrate on the farm murders and leave the smokers alone”. F Bouwer’s view was an emphatic “Stop the smoking!” while a couple agreed that alcohol and crime are bigger problems. The CEO of the Tobacco, Alcohol and Gambling Advisory, Advocacy, and Action group, Peter

Ucko, said: “It’s a health reason. You don’t want to expose people to second-hand and third-hand smoke. It’s just a public health risk. Let’s call a spade a spade and not a shovel. It’s not just a cloud of smoke. It’s a dense cloud of toxic chemicals that are dangerous to public health.” The #HandsOffMyChoices hashtag has been created and points people in the direction of a petition to sign in the hopes of preventing the bill going through. This has been widely advertised on radio stations, including our local Jacaranda FM, and commenters from both the for and against sides are found on their Facebook page. While many seem to support this campaign, remarks occur from those who suggest that campaigns like this one are funded by the tobacco industry. In a press release issued by the Tobacco Industry of Southern Africa (TISA) on 26 April this year, they call for a “thorough impact assessment prior to introduction of extreme new legislation” and note their “surprise and concern” at the announcement. “TISA believes the process now urgently requires that a comprehensive, transparent and multistakeholder Socio Economic Impact Assessment (SEIA) is conducted to ensure the legislation is evidence-based and does not result in unintended consequences.” Another hashtag #SaveVaping has also been doing the rounds, with vaping enthusiasts such as @VPASouthAfrica #SmokeFreeSA claiming that it has saved many lives by converting smokers away from cigarettes and encouraging people to share their testimonies about how this habit helped them quit a worse one, which they hope will lead to vapers’ not having to contend with the same laws as those who are smoking cigarettes. Local cashiers at shops selling these devices told the newspaper that they have experienced a steady rise in purchases and that Louis Trichardt has a large

vaping community. Dr Kgosi Letlape, co-founder of the Africa Harm Reduction Alliance, is a little more pro-vaping. He says that in markets such as the UK “Vaping is considered to be useful and they are advocating for the e-cigarette to be prescribed by doctors to smokers who can’t quit”. Letlape’s co-founder, Dr Delon Human, states that “Vaping and e-cigarettes have the potential to prevent tobacco-related disease and save hundreds of millions of lives from premature death. For the sake of population and individual health, it is imperative that vaping is recognised as an alternative to combustible tobacco

products, within the broader context of tobacco harm reduction.” “Our motive is to protect public health,” said Lorato Mahura of the tobacco control unit of the health department. He said that they were expecting pushback from the tobacco industry. “Their mandate is to protect profits,” he said. “We are going to be tampering with their profit-making processes. Of course they are going to fight back.” Whether the bill is ratified or not, readers’ comments suggest that, with the current state of lawlessness here, they would be interested to see whether any smokers actually do get arrested.

Remembering those who died at Delville Wood Commemoration

Members of the Turbi Hills Shellhole in Louis Trichardt paid tribute to the thousands of South African soldiers who died at the Battle of Delville Wood during the First World War. A special wreath-laying ceremony for them took place on Sunday, 15 July, at the shellhole in Louis Trichardt.

Among the many guests who laid wreaths on Sunday to commemorate the Battle of Delville Wood was Lt-Col Craig Leeson of AFB Makhado. He laid a wreath on behalf of 85 Combat Flying School.

They shall grow not old as we are left to grow old, age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn, at the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them…” With these words from the prayer of the Memorable Order of Tin Hats, the Moths of the Turbi Hills Shellhole in Louis Trichardt paid tribute to the thousands of brave South Africans who marched towards certain death during the Battle of the Somme. Sunday, 15 July, saw the 102nd anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest battles in human history. Between 1 July and 18 November 1916, more than one million men were wounded or killed on the banks of the river Somme in France. Among the soldiers killed and injured were more than 2 400 South Africans, who fought for control over a small piece of land in the northeast of France, called Delville Wood. The attack on Delville Wood was just one part of the Battle of the Somme, the Haig’s infamous “Great Push” to end the war on the Western Front. With the exception of the French, the attacks by Allied Soldiers across the Somme front were a failure in the short and long term. Delville Wood had to be cleared of German forces dug in there as they would have represented a major danger to the rear of the Allied forces once they had moved on from the area and towards the Germans’ “Switch Line”. The planning, however, assumed that the Battle of the Somme would be a success. The attack at Delville Wood started on 15 July 1916. Just more than 3 000 men from the South African 1st Infantry Brigade were tasked with clearing the wood and were ordered to take the wood “at all cost!” As with many attacks, the wood was heavily shelled by Allied artillery before infantry troops went in. The southern sector of the wood was quickly cleared of Germans. The officer overseeing the attack, Tanner, reported back to his headquarters in the evening of the 15th that all of the wood had been taken, except the northwest near the town of Longueval. In fact, the South Africans were in a very precarious position as they faced more than 7 000 Germans. The artillery shelling had pushed over trees and exposed their roots. This made it very difficult to dig trenches. The South Africans were not only up against a larger force but had to survive in “trenches” that had little depth and gave minimal protection especially against German artillery attacks.

The terrain all but dictated that most of the combat within the wood was hand-to-hand fighting and casualties were high. The terrain would have made it difficult to move the wounded back to a medical station. However, such was the ferocity of the fighting that for every South African wounded, four enemies were killed. The South Africans fought within the wood until 19 July when they were finally relieved. Of the 3 155 South African men and officers who marched into the wood, only 755 walked out again. “Every semblance of a trench seemed full of dead-sodden, squelchy, swollen bodies. Fortunately, the blackening faces were invisible except when Verey lights lit up the indescribable scene. Not a tree stood in that wood,” remarked one of the soldiers who fought at Delville Wood and survived. Apart from the local Moths, other special guests who attended the memorial service to lay wreaths included Col Jacobs on behalf of the officer commanding of AFB Makhado, Brig-Gen André Barends, Moth Ron Rose (in remembrance of all British and Allied soldiers who lost their lives in and around Delville Wood), Old Bill Alan Odendaal (on behalf of Turbi Hills Shellhole and on behalf of all South African Forces who lost their lives in and around Delville Wood), Moth Johan Cronje (on behalf of MESCA), Lt-Col Francois Van Zyl (on behalf of the South African Air Force Association), Lt-Col D M Wilson (on behalf of the Officer Commanding 2 Squadron), Lt-Col C Leeson (on behalf of 85 Combat Flying School), Mr Charles Leach (on behalf of Lt Tim Kleinenberg), Mr André Müller (on behalf of the local Rotarians), Mr Marius Gilfillian (on behalf of Zoutpansberg Skirmishes Group) and Moth Iain Purdon (on behalf of the Louis Trichardt Chamber of Commerce). “The MOTHs of Turbi Hills Shellhole would like to express their gratitude to all who braved the cold and attended the Delville Wood Day parade that took place on 15 July 2018. A very special word of thank you to AFB Makhado for their participation in making this day a great success in remembrance of all the lives lost at Delville Wood. This was one of the most epic battles fought in the history of mankind,” said Old Bill Odendaal.

Everyone can help curb animal smuggling trade By Jo Robinson

Many of our indigenous reptiles end up on menus in other countries.

While a lot of attention is given to the plight of big game in the illegal wildlife trade, local animal advocates would like people to know more about what is happening to all the animals in the country, and what they can do to help them. According to the Louis Trichardt SPCA, an animal’s welfare should be considered in terms of the five freedoms, namely freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury or disease, freedom to express normal behaviour and freedom from fear and distress. Senior inspector Lawrence Khodobo of the local SPCA pointed the newspaper in the direction of the National Council of SPCAs (NCSPCA) which is dedicated to the wellbeing and conservation of all our animals. Kotie Geldenhuys, who wrote the report Animal Smuggling and Illegal Trade for the NCSPCA, said that the primary motivating factor for wildlife traders was money, and it ranged from small-scale, local income generation to major profit-oriented business. “The illegal wildlife trade is usually driven by a demand for rare, protected species, which need to be smuggled in secret to get them out of the country … For every animal that makes it to a store, an auction, or new owner, countless others die along the way … Due to the very low survival rate, this also means that far higher numbers of animals are removed from the ecosystem to make up for losses,” said Geldenhuys. Khodobo said that any wild animal or bird found, whether injured or a baby animal or fledgling bird, must be taken to the SPCA. “All the wild animals received by our society go to an NCSPCA-accredited rehabilitation centre,” said Khodobo, adding that they have two of these centres in Limpopo. What the NCSPCA would like people to know is that wildlife is protected by law, and that people cannot just go out and catch any wild animal for any purpose that they have in mind. This is against the law. “Anyone intending to catch an indigenous animal in the open must be in possession of a permit from Nature Conservation in their respective province, and anyone failing to do so may face legal consequences. There is a good chance that an endangered species of field mouse or frog could be caught,” said the NCSPCA. “So, people must not think that ‘lesser’ creatures are fair game for them to catch and use as they will. This also applies to lizards, snakes and other reptiles that people think of as common,” said Khodobo. “In South Africa, an indigenous snake may not be kept in captivity without a permit – and the majority of provinces have adopted the policy not to issue permits for the domestic pet trade,” said the NCSPCA. “Concerns are threefold: pet reptiles can be harmful to human health, the reptile trade results

in inhumane treatment of reptiles and it harms the environment and wild populations of reptiles and other wildlife,” the NCSPCA added. So, what can people do? The NCSPCA said that the smuggling of and illegal trading in wildlife are nothing new, and one is often amazed to discover what people have managed to smuggle and the way in which they have done it. “However, wild animals are not the only animals to be smuggled - even domestic animals are smuggled across South African borders,” said the NCSPCA. The NCSPCA is involved in enforcing the law relating to both wild and domestic animals. “The world is dealing with an unprecedented spike in illegal wildlife trade, which is threatening to overturn decades of conservation gains. The global trade in over-exploited, unsustainable and illegal wildlife is a multibillion dollar industry that is responsible for causing the maximum degree of harm to biodiversity in the shortest time frame,” said the NCSPCA.Wildlife crime is a big business that is run by international networks through which wildlife and animal parts are trafficked much like illegal drugs and arms. “This trafficking is a transnational crime that exploits porous borders, disadvantaged communities and corruption. The illegal wildlife trade is driven by high profit margins and low risk of interception, and it involves live animals and plants, as well as their parts or products. There is an extensive legal and illegal trade, both in South Africa and internationally,” said the NCSPCA. The NCSPCA wants the general public to be aware of what is happening to their wildlife heritage and to act appropriately, both in their treatment of animals and in reporting illegal or cruel activities without hesitation. “Raising awareness of how animal crime is conducted in South Africa empowers staff at ports of entry, not only to help them to be vigilant for animal welfare concerns and illegal operations, but also to increase their awareness of the associated crime that takes place using common animal transport avenues. Transnational animal trade and smuggling are not limited to wild animals. South Africans are often willing to breed and sell puppies to any willing buyer and readily give pets away ‘free to a good home’. This results in an easy and constant source of untraceable kittens and puppies. These animals cross our borders to whatever fate awaits them,” said the NCSPCA. A final word from our local SPCA. “We have a qualified inspector who is dedicated to protecting all animals and, where necessary, prosecuting any person who is caught wilfully abusing an animal. Our inspector will go to any length to rescue an animal which is in distress. He is on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to help and assist any animal in need of help,” said the local SPCA.

Tweede-laaste wedstryd op dorp se “ou” tuisveld Rugby

Die Louis Trichardt Rugbyklub sal eerskomende Saterdag, 21 Julie, hul tweede-laaste tuisveld kragmeting van die Boet Fick-liga hê wanneer die dorp se eerstes sal uitdraf teen die Universiteit van Venda. “Dit is vir ons belangrik dat die mense ons kom ondersteun. Ná die naweek se wedstryd het ons nog net een wedstryd oor wat ons op die klub se bestaande veld sal speel, voordat die klub gesloop

Met die skole XCO-liga wat om die draai is, het XCO bergfietsorganiseerder Johan van Dijkhorst vanaf 8 tot 10 Julie ‘n oefenkamp vir laerskoolkinders by die Schoemansdal Omgewingsopvoedingsentrum aangebied. ‘n Groepie hoërskool bergfietsryers van die streek het verlede week ‘n onvergeetlike avontuurrit vanaf die Beitbrug grenspos tot by Haenertsburg aangepak. Hulle het die treinspoor se roete suid gevolg, wat hulle verby Musina, Mopane en uiteindelik by Van Collerspas op geneem het. Die 17 jong fietsryers het die eerste aand op Musina geslaap, waarna hulle die roete oor die Soutpansberg, via die treintonnel tot by Schoemansdal Omgewingsopvoedingsentrum gevolg het waar hulle die tweede aand oorgebly het. Die volgende dag is die roete aangepak wat hulle verby Bandelierkop en Morebeng (Soekmekaar) geneem het tot by Munnikstasie, waar hulle oornag het. Die avontuur het Saterdag geëindig met ‘n rit via Houtbosdorp tot by Stanford Lake College in Haenerstburg. Die groep het bykans 300 kilometer per fiets afgelê. Die uitstappie is gereël deur Johan van Dijkhorst en dit het terselfdertyd ook gehelp om die fietsryers fiks te hou en voor te berei vir die Limpopo fietsryliga. Die XCO oefenkamp vir laerskoolkinders het ook ‘n uithourit al langs die treinspoor ingesluit.
