Roadworks nightmare By Andries van Zyl
the municipality was seriously frustrating. She said they as business owners should have been consulted. “They could have called us together and we would have asked them to at least let the festive season pass. They could have chosen a quieter time,” said Maluleke. She also added that the start of the rainy season was the worst time to start a project like this and that they should have
waited until winter. “That is what we would have suggested. The project should also have been done in sections,” said Maluleke, explaining that they could have first closed of Main Street between Orient Road and 1st Avenue, and then between Orient Street and Commercial Street. This would have allowed at least one intersection on Main Street to be open all the time. “You cannot just dig up the whole road, so that there
is no way in or no way out. It must be done in a way that we can still function. At the end of the day, we want a better road, but if there is no business left, what is the point of a new road?” said Maluleke. Maluleke said her business had taken a huge knock with the municipality’s one-sided decision to close the road. (Contd on P2)
Frustration is mounting among residents of Eltivillas in Louis Trichardt about the snail’s pace at which the rehabilitation of a section of Main Street, the main traffic artery leading in and out of this busy suburb, is taking place. The section of Main Street between Commercial Street and 1st Avenue was ripped up in September last year and completely closed off for traffic. What immediately irritated residents, and especially business owners adjacent to the road, was that the municipality only sent them letters explaining their intentions weeks later. “What purpose did that serve, informing us that they were going to rip up the road after they had already done it!?” was the view expressed by all affected by the road closure. They added that the road closure could not have come at a worse time as many of them are still struggling to keep head above water because of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions of the past months. “It is terrible! There was no notification. They circulated a letter in November that they wanted us to sign that we were notified. This was one of the busiest periods of the year to try and recover from the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Because of the road closure, I suffered tremendous losses, with a 65% drop in sales for December,” said Ms Masana Maluleke, owner of ChemiMed Pharmacy in Main Street. To make matters worse, Maluleke said, her sales were continuing to decline. Almost 90% of her clients are “walk-in” clients. “If people get there and see the road is closed, they make a U-turn and go somewhere else,” said Maluleke. She is also upset about the pace at which construction work is taking place. “They don’t work on weekends. They closed on 15 December and only reopened on 9 December. From a business perspective, honestly, they could have put back the road even if it was a gravel road,” said Maluleke. The section of Main Street between Commercial Street and 1st Avenue was ripped up in September last year and completely closed off for trafMaluleke added that, apart from the bad fic. What immediately irritated residents, and especially business owners adjacent to the road, was that the municipality had only sent them timing, the lack of communication on the part of letters explaining their intentions weeks later.

Zoutpansberger

The good rains of the past weeks have left their mark on the region’s roads. The wet conditions have caused road surfaces to crumble, causing thousands of potholes. The pothole problem is also of major concern in the streets of Louis Trichardt. Thankfully, the Makhado Municipality has finally embarked on a process of fixing these potholes. Evidence of this could be seen the past week across town. These municipal workers were spotted fixing potholes in Grobler Street on Wednesday morning. One frustration, however, is that potholes are cut open in several streets simultaneously and then left open without any warning signs to motorists. Some of these “ditches” are so deep that they have caused damage to vehicles.

Slegs hoë-resolusie digitale foto’s
082 603 2419 of 015 516 4997 (tydens kantoorure).

MC Mining asks for more time to pay MC Mining announced last week that it was resolving the funding required to make the deferred payment for their Makhado hard-coking and thermal coal project that became due on 10 January this year. On 14 January 2019, MC Mining announced that its subsidiary, Baobab Mining & Exploration (Pty) Ltd, had completed the acquisition of the farms Lukin and Salaita just north of the Soutpansberg, being the key surface rights for their Makhado hard-coking and thermal coal project. As announced, the balance of the purchase price of R35 million (US$2.2 million) plus interest (the deferred payment) was payable by Baobab within three years of the transfer of the properties (or on the earlier of certain events occurring).
Accordingly, the deferred payment became due last week, and the vendor has agreed to extend the due date for payment to 28 February this year. Furthermore, MC Mining has agreed to pay an instalment of R6 million by 12 January this year, which is to be deducted from the deferred payment now due on 28 February. Interest will accrue on the unpaid deferred payment at the effective annual rate of 15.2%. Mc Mining says in a press release that it continues to work with Baobab and its advisers to complete the funding requirement for development of the Makhado Project and will provide further updates to the market as required. “A further announcement will be made in due course, as and when applicable. As previously announced by the Company, the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Limited (IDC)
agreed to extend the repayment date for the R160 million (US$10.3 million) loan plus accrued interest to 31 January 2022. The IDC also agreed to extend the terminal drawdown date of the additional R245 million (US$15.7 million) IDC term loan for the development of Phase 1 of Makhado, to 31 January 2022, subject to the IDC re-affirming its financial due diligence,” says MC Mining in their press release. Given the delay in finalising the Makhado Project funding, MC Mining also says it has requested a further extension, to 31 May 2022, for both the repayment date of the existing R160 million plus interest and the terminal drawdown date of the additional R245 million term loan. “The IDC is yet to respond, and the market will be informed when the outcome of this request is known,” said MC Mining.
Foto verskaf.
Just more than a month has passed since the break-in at the Musina Post Office, and the community is still waiting for services to resume. Thugs broke into the post office on 16 December last year, stealing all the equipment and systems that enable the post office to be fully operational. “These burglars have tried to break into the post office on several occasions and have destroyed the outside structure of the building a number of times,” said Mr Mulaudzi
Mmbengini, the manager of Musina Post Office. According to him, no security guards are available during the day or night to guard the building. The only time security guards are made available are on the days when pensioners get paid out. For the moment, Mmbengini said, the post office only did renewals of SASSA cards, and the community could collect their mail. He was not sure when normal services might resume. “This has really affected the whole of Musina,” said Peter Jack Mokgoli, chairperson of
Musina To The Front, a local community structure. “Many residents cannot afford to travel the 100km to Louis Trichardt to collect their money. Most of them have resorted to waiting for their local post office to reopen all services.” Mokgoli said he was planning an urgent meeting with the post office’s management and Musina stakeholders. “If we all agree, we could try to rope in Venetia Mine to assist us with resources, in order for the post office to resume much-needed services to the public,” said Mokgoli.

Left: On Friday, 14 January, Louis Trichardt High School held its annual interhouse athletics meeting. Although the weather was very cold and wet, the meeting continued. Athletes gave it their all while competing in their respective events and smiles were seen all around from those roaming the field, under gazebos and umbrellas and on the pavilion. Pictured is athlete Frans Fogwell in action. Photo: Louis Trichardt High School.
