The keys of the new vehicle were handed to Cllr Faith Chauke, a member of the management team in Vhembe. It was witnessed by senior officials from the Department of Health. Hopewood said his organisation had always been involved in fighting for children’s rights. According to him, they were touched when they heard that there was only one mobile unit serving many farms. He said since they had started operating in South Africa in 1997, they had been involved in countless causes, with emphasis on child protection, education and health. “We are saddened by the continued unnecessary deaths of children and mothers, especially of children through HIV

infections. Two years ago, we launched a global campaign to reduce this unacceptably higher number of deaths, and today we are reinforcing our commitment to this end,“ he said. Chauke said as a district they were very excited to receive such a unit. She said many in the district found it difficult to reach state facilities where they could access health care and the mobile clinic would serve as an answer. Winds leave a trail of destruction Several rural schools situated in villages outside Beit Bridge where extensively damaged and their roofs blown off, following recent strong winds that swept across some eastern parts of the district. Scores of homes were also destroyed by the uncharacteristically heavy rains that pounded parts of the district a fortnight ago. The downpour, which was preceded by strong winds and a hailstorm, also left a trail of destruction at two local health centres in Tshikwalakwala and Swereki. The chief executive officer of the Beit Bridge Rural District Council, Mr Albert Mbedzi, said they were now in the process of conducting an assessment throughout the district to ascer-

tain the cost of the damage. “As a local authority, we have since deployed our teams to the affected areas to assess the impact of the damage. We are also appealing to the donor community to assist us with funds, so that the classrooms are repaired before the rainy season begins,” he said. Mbedzi said the worst-affected schools include Tshipise, Tshikwalakwala, Tshitulipasi, Dite and Tshaswingo as well as the Tshikwalakwala clinic. The damage is estimated at US$2 000. The hailstorm broke windows and the ceiling was also damaged. Mbedzi said they had since notified the local civil protection unit (CPU) about the problem. “We hope a meeting for all stakeholders will be convened

soon over this issue, during which we will also appeal for assistance through the CPU. We need to address the problem as a matter of urgency,” he said. Villagers in the Tshamnangana area in the district last year also experienced a similar problem when strong winds left a trail of destruction at the local school, clinic and several homesteads. The Kwalu Secondary School had its entire roof blown off, while a villager from neighbouring Mutangamutshena lost five goats after the animals were struck by lightning. The incident occurred while the children were attending classes. The classrooms have since been repaired, following assistance from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

R30 000 bail for doctor facing charge of raping a patient Family members and friends of Dr Justice Mulaudzi, who attended his bail application at the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court, went home happy after he was granted bail. Mulaudzi (40) of Thohoyandou, has been in prison for the past three weeks, after being arrested for the alleged rape of a patient. On Monday, he was granted bail of R30 000. He is alleged to have raped a 21-year-old patient, when he was standing in for a colleague at a private surgery at Ha-Makhuvha. The bail application, which started last week and took nearly three days, drew much interest from the community, who attended in numbers. Mulaudzi, who is clinical manager at the Hayani Hospital and a senior member of a well-known local church, received support from church members and colleagues. They were always there to lend their support. For the state, W/O Herman Bila confirmed that

Mulaudzi had faced a rape charge in Malamulele in 2006, but it was withdrawn. He said the reasons for the withdrawal were unknown and the docket had since disappeared. That case and the docket were subject to police investigations. He also confirmed that Mulaudzi’s passport had expired and had not been renewed. Under cross examination, Bila confirmed that the Malamulele case was not pending. Adv Anton Ramaano (for Mulaudzi) questioned the issue of the seizure of the applicant’s underwear. Ramaano complained that the whole issue was meant to harras and humiliate his client as it was done in the presence of a female police officer. Ramaano had asked that Mulaudzi be released on R5 000 bail as there were no grounds to deny him bail. He said the state was all out to portray his client as a serial rapist, which was not the case. In granting bail, Muthambi said Mulaudzi was facing a Schedule 5 offence, which allows for bail to be granted if that will not be prejudicial to the State's case. Muthambi said he had weighed all the evidence led by the State and found that they had failed to advance good reasons which could convince him that releasing Mulaudzi on bail could hinder the right to a free trial. He said although Mulaudzi’s case was a “travesty to the medical profession and an embarrassment to his colleagues,” there was nothing to suggest if he was released on bail he would not attend trial or would interfere with State witnesses. He added that denying bail to Mulaudzi would not help the State in the trial. “The onus is on the State to tighten its belt and prepare adequately for the trial without any lapses," he said. Mulaudzi's bail has conditions attached to it, that he must not interfere with State witnesses or police investigations and attend trial at all scheduled dates. Muthambi said State witnesses were hostile to the accused and there was no way he could interfere with them and not risk being arrested. He also said Mulaudzi was not known for violent behaviour and that he was also a church elder. He is also not known to have property outside the country as he is known to have houses in Thohoyandou and Louis Trichardt. “Stop using the name Louis Trichardt” The Limpopo Geographical Names Committee (LGNC) warned this week that the public and media should immediately stop using the name Louis Trichardt, following the Minister of Arts and Culture Paul Mashatile’s announcement that the name Makhado has been approved. The name Makhado was published the first time in the government gazette in June 2003. By law, a period of 30 days is granted for objections. Objections were received and eventually the case was heard in the High Court in Pretoria in August 2005, with Judge MK Legodi ruling that Louis Trichardt’s name was Makhado. That was in September, coinciding with the jubilant unveiling of the statue of King Ramabulana Makhado at the tourism information centre in Louis Trichardt. In the meantime, the Chairpersons Association (CA) was granted leave to appeal against the judgment and succeeded to win their appeal case in Bloemfontein. The five appeal court judges set aside the name change in March 2007, due to insufficient consultation. Hence the name of the town was Louis Trichardt again. Following this ruling, the Makhado Municipality restarted the process and presented the name Makhado to the Limpopo Geographical Names Committee (LGNC). LGNC

was satisfied with the process of consultations and recommended the name change to the South African Geographical Names Council. Now that the minister has approved and published the name Makhado in the Government Gazette of 14 October, the LGNC wants an immediate enforcing of the use of the name. “The committee wants to make it clear that members of the public and media must stop using the old name Louis Trichardt to use the new re-approved Makhado... "The committee will come with a series of meetings to enforce the implementation of the new name in order for the public to stop using the old name, which residents of the Makhado area feel is on no account associated with them, but the old regime. The committee will address the critical issue of changing all signage around the province. The committee will engage the department of Roads and Transport together with Makhado Municipality to fast track this process of changing signs to avoid confusing people,” stated LGNC spokesperson Mr Peter Moruthane on October 17 in a press release. The question now, however, is whether the LGNC is jumping the gun wit respect to the use of the name Makhado, since the 30 days objection period to the

name change only expires on 14 November? “It is totally unlawful to start enforcing the name at this stage,” said attorney André Naudé, chairperson of the CA. The CA has already indicated that their objections have been prepared and they consider litigating, should the objections not be upheld. When Louis Trichardt first became Makhado, several sectors of the community warned against the cost implication to change all the signage prematurely. Sign boards with the name Makhado appeared with exceptional speed. After the appeal court decision, it took more than three years to get some of the boards changed back to Louis Trichardt again. The CA says it is surprising that the changing of road signage will suddenly be fast tracked. “This is an indication of the fact that the whole process is politically motivated and not in the interest of the nation. The whole name change process polarises cultural groups. At grassroots level there is a synergy between cultural groups that politicians destroy. Their interest is not to serve communities,” Naudé said. Meanwhile, the office of Minister Mashatile indicated that they would convey the reasons for changing the name to Makhado to the Limpopo Mirror by next week.

A cloud of sadness still hangs around Chavani village outside Waterval, following a horrific incident where angry residents stoned and killed a 35-year-old man in the village last Friday. Mr Calvin Mukwevho, a resident of the nearby Mbokota village, was stoned to death. This happened after residents accused him of killing Mr Joseph Chavani (55), who was found dead at his house last week. It is said that residents were furnished with the information of what had happened and who the suspect was. Then, after realizing that the police were not doing anything, they decided to take the law into their own hands. They allegedly tied Mukwevho’s hands together with a rope and stoned him to death. Waterval police spokesperson W/O Kedibone Mabatha confirmed that Chavani was found dead in his house a week ago. “The man did not have any wounds, but there was blood coming from his nose,” he said. He added that an inquest docket was opened with the police, following the incident. “While the police were still investigating the death of Mr Chavani, Mukwevho was stoned to death, allegedly by residents,” said Mabatha. He said that it was reported that the two fought a day before Chavani was found dead. “According to the information we got from the community, the two were allegedly fighting over a girlfriend,” he said. “We have opened another inquest docket and the investigation still continues,” highlighted Mabatha, adding that ten community members have been questioned regarding Mukwevho’s death. However, no confession had been made at the time of going to press. Mukwevho’s sister, Tshiwela, said that the death came as a shock to the family. “We need to see justice being done here. He did not deserve to

Mtititi Thusong ready to render services Premier Cassel Mathale has urged communities in Mtititi and surrounding villages near Malamulele to use the newly constructed Mtititi Thusong Services Centre. Mathale said the days when poor rural communities had to ravel long distance access for government services were over. “As government we want to ensure that communities from villages such as Halahala, Merwe, Mabayeni, Lombard, Altein, Plange RDP town, Muhunguti

and others will no longer have to travel long distances to have access to government services,” said Mathale. He was speaking during the recent officially launching of the centre. Mathale added that some of the departments which would render services included the Department of Social Development, Police, Agriculture, Municipality, Traditional Council and the Department of Labour. “We urge our poor rural residents to

utilize the services offered at the centre and ensure that the building is not vandalised. We strongly condemn communities who vandalise government buildings,” said Mathale. One of the residents set to benefit from the opening of the centre, Ms Conny Maluleke, was over moon with the new development. “Today I feel relieved, because we will no longer have to travel more than 30km to Malamulele to access government services.”

Mayor motivates “dysfunctional” school The mayor of Thulamela, Cllr Grace Mahosi, has urged pupils from schools in the area to study hard. She promised them all the necessary support and said that their passing with flying colours would make the municipality proud. Mahosi embarked

on a campaign last week to motivate learners at underperforming schools just before they started writing their examinations. She kicked off her tour of the schools on Thursday when she visited Tshadama High School at Ngwenani. She and her entourage also paid a visit to Marude Secondary in Thohoyandou. She proceeded to visit PP Hlungwani and Nkatini Secondary School in the Malamulele area, where she addressed pupils and teachers before wrapping up her visit at Shayandima Secondary School. At Tshadama High School, which was known for its bad results, pupils and teachers told her that her interest in them would have a catalytic effect and they would do well in this year’s examinations. Mahosi, who had been a teacher for 30 years, also gave the 58 Grade 12 pupils cards with the message: May you make us proud. You enjoy the support of the municipality, the staff and your parents. New world opens for disadvantaged students A whole new world has opened for a number of poor students. The students, all from disadvantaged backgrounds, benefitted from a bursary scheme offered by Mass Computer Training FET College. They were selected according to merit at the college’s eight campuses in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The students, who are now well-equipped, went home happy and fulfilled after receiving their certificates and diplomas. They were part of the more than 300 who received their qualifications during a ceremony at the Thohoyandou Town Hall at the weekend. The students received qualifications in Computer, Ancillary Healthcare, System Support and System Development, among others. The college, which had its humble beginning in 2000 with only two students and two computers, has produced many leaders in government and the private sector. It has always been closer to the people and has assisted

many students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Awelani Tshivhenga from Davhana village outside Louis Trichardt is one those who benefitted. The 23-year-old student said she and her two younger brothers were left orphaned when their parents died. “When my father died in 2007, we depended on our mother. She, too, died the following year and that was when our world started crumbling; we had no hope of ever making it in life,” she said. She said even though their parents did not work, they managed to build them a tworoomed house, which is still their home. She said she knew deep down in her heart that life would not be easy for her as she had only Grade 12, which is not enough to earn her a job. “I used to ponder what the future held for us. I had no hope as there was no one to help us go to school, but just prayed that a Good Samaritan should come and assist,” she said.

She said life was extremely tough. “We are on our own; even relatives do not want to have anything to do with us. We are just grateful that there are people like Mass out there who still cherish the spirit of ubuntu,” she said. She said she visited the college in order to get more information and what she got there made her very happy. “My meeting the principal, Ms Selinah Nthangeni, completely changed my life. She told me about the bursary and the opportunities that exist at the college. Today, I have achieved something in life. I can stand on my own and face the challenging world with confidence,” she said. She completed her computer diploma and hopes to get a job soon. Ms Nthangeni said the gesture was part of their social responsibility. “We are a caring institution which understands the conditions of most of our students; most of them do not even have money to register.”

Early Christmas for Tshavhalovhedzi triplets There was excitement in the air when the mayor of Makhado Municipality, Cllr Mavhungu Luruli, surprised the mother of triplets with Christmas gifts. Ms Livhuwani Phungo (32) gave birth to triplets Uhone, Muneiwa and Vhukhudo in July this year. Luruli presented Ms Phungo with food, clothes and nappies. She added that the children were

a gift from God. “Our municipality is blessed with this precious gift and we all need to support them,” she said. According to Luruli, it is rare to give birth to triplet babies and therefore the family should celebrate. She challenged members of the community to get involved in the upbringing of the children. Phungo first gave birth to twins in 2002.

She is now experiencing some difficulties to raise the children as an unemployed mother of five. Her husband is working as a security guard. Phungo is a resident of Tshavhalovhedzi village in the Nzhelele area and is in Ward 33 of the Makhado Municipality. She expressed appreciation for the donation and said she was happy for the support.

Ralushai had, among his milestones, written more than 20 publications and chaired commissions that dealt with traditional affairs. Masemola said that his death had robbed the country and especially the province of an asset. “We are here as government to mourn with the family, to pass our condolences to the family at this difficult time,“ he said. He described Ralushai as a matchless scholar whose works speak for themselves, a true African genius and a gift that left a permanent footprint. “We are today celebrating Mapungubwe as a heritage site

because of his research. His knowledge about traditional matters is still needed to solve challenges on traditional leadership,” he added. Family spokesperson Dick Ralushai said the death was a double blow as they had recently lost another member of the family. “Our tears had hardly dried u;, we are still mourning and then another death in the family. We are just glad that the community has always been supportive. The past two weeks were the most trying, but people rallied around us and we are healing through time,” he said. Prof Ralushai was born at Ha-Ralushai, Mbilwi, in Sibasa in 1935. He was the youngest son of the late Mr Matodzi and Mrs Khangale Nemakhavhani.

Poverty alleviation programme for Musina Sixty community members from indigent families in Musina will now be able to put some food on the table. This comes after they were included in the poverty-alleviation programme initiated by the local municipality. Mayor Carol Phiri says she did not want to rely on reports about the background of the families, but instead personally spent two days assessing their living conditions. “What I saw in these people’s houses is painful. I have really observed poverty at its worst. After the visits, we decided to do something to keep the fire burning in these families.” Phiri says the community members involved in the poverty-alleviation initiative will, among other things, sweep the streets, de-bush shrubs and do general cleaning both in town and

the Nancefield residential area. “They had already started working last week. We don’t have time to waste while our people are brutalised by poverty, not knowing where their next meal will come from. The initiative is based on job-creation initiatives, which will bring sustainability to the local people.” She added that even though some of the entitlements had been restored since the country achieved political independence, “the majority of our people still lack the opportunity to empower themselves with the capability and security that should enable them to escape poverty.” According to her, Musina Municipality is determined to transform the local society by redressing inequality and alleviating poverty, largely through job creation and basic service provision. “We will continue to do so because

Two villages boycott census Two Limpopo villages are boycotting Census 2011 over the appointment of Statistics South Africa (Statssa) field workers. The communities of Bawula and Mathura outside Giyani are not allowing field workers to count them, claiming that their appointment was a political move. Civic Organisation member Peter Mathebula said the two communities became annoyed after some workers replaced the original people who were hired first without being informed. “The problem started when Statssa appointed field coordinator Nkhesani Novena, who is also an ANC member. Novena then hired his three sisters, relatives and only ANC members in the village,” said Mathebula. He said that before the census started, the communities wrote a let-

ter to the local Statistics SA offices in Giyani and Polokwane, and they kept promising that that they would deal with the problem. “If the government fails to resolve this issue, we are not going to be counted. Being South African does not mean all people should account to a single political party. How can this government overcome high rates of unemployment while people are still appointed because of political affiliation?” he said. When approached for comment, Novena denied the allegation, saying that only a part of the community did not want to be counted. “The names of these who were hired appeared on the South African Statistic database, and that is the reason why we have taken them,” said Novena.

South Africa has started deporting undocumented Zimbabweans, with more that 600 deportees having arrived in their home country through the Beit Bridge Border Post on Wednesday and Thursday last week. The first batch of 261 illegal immigrants, mostly men, arrived at the Beit Bridge border in four luxurious buses on Wednesday. The second group of 370 was brought back home on Thursday. According to South African Home Affairs officials who were escorting them, the deportees were the first group of undocumented Zimbabweans to be deported. The South African government recently announced that it would resume the deportation of

Zimbabweans who failed to regularise their stay in that country during the recent documentation exercise. “We brought a total of 261 deportees, most of which are ex-convicts, including those who were recently rounded up around the Johannesburg area,” said an SA Home Affairs official, who declined to be named. The undocumented Zimbabweans were temporarily kept at Lindela Detention Centre outside Johannesburg. When Limpopo Mirror visited Beit Bridge Border Post, our reporter observed that some illegal cross-border transporters had already started touting for “clients” as the deportees shouted through the windows of their buses in response to the transporters.

“Let’s meet at the local Caltex service station and we will help you to cross back to South Africa. That is an easy task for us,” shouted one illegal cross-border transport operator. Most of them charge between R300 and R800 to facilitate smooth passage of undocumented Zimbabweans into South Africa. The Zimbabwean assistant regional immigration manager at Beit Bridge Border Post, Mrs Tamari Shadaya, confirmed that they had received the deportees “We received the deportees and our officials vetted them before they proceeded to the local International Organisation for Migration (IOM) centre. We are expecting more deportations during the course of the month,” she said.

A 23-year-old Somalian businessman was shot and wounded at Gogobole village in the Sinthumule area last Friday, police have said. Two unknown men apparently entered a Somalian-owned shop in the village and demanded money at gunpoint. After seeing that the businessman, Mr Eyakor Dawit, was reluctant to give them money, they shot him in the leg. Tshilwavhusiku police spokesperson Const Godwin Mahuwa said that Dawit was shot in the right knee. "He was wounded and was rushed to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital," said Mahuwa. We have adopted this centre and we have plans to erect a ceiling for them. Inquest docket opened after police found body The Thohoyandou police have opened an inquest docket, following the death of a 34-year-old male. The deceased's body was found floating in the Damani Dam at Makhuvha on Sunday. Police information is that the man was allegedly on the run from police after chopping his wife with a sharp instrument on Thursday. He is also alleged to have been incensed after being served with a protection order from his wife. According to the spokesperson for the police at Thohoyandou, Const Avhafarei Tshiovhe, a case of attempted murder had been opened

against him. She said no foul play is suspected to have led to his death. In another incident, the Thohoyandou police are investigating two culpable homicide cases that happened on Friday last week. The first incident is alleged to have happened at about 10:00 along the Makwarela-Punda Maria road, where a 26-year-old male died after the truck he was driving overturned. It is alleged the deceased, who worked for an electrical contractor, was ferrying six passengers

when he lost control and the truck overturned. All the passengers were taken to hospital for treatment. In an unrelated incident, a 69-year-old female passenger in a taxi was kiled on the Ngudza-Matatshe public road. According to police information, the taxi stopped in front of a truck, which was driving in the same direction. "The truck is alleged to have hit the taxi from the back and one passenger died at the scene. The other passengers were taken to the local hospital for medical attention," said Tshiovhe.

International award for Vhembe Vhembe District Municipality has won the best international stand award during the Sanganai/Hlanganani World and Tourism Africa Fair (WTTF), recently held in Harare, Zimbabwe. The exhibition was organized by Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) and was aimed at exposing and showcasing tourism products among countries throughout the world. Countries such as France, England, Italy, China, Nigeria, Japan, Botswana, Malawi, Zambia and several others attended the show. The Vhembe District Municipality was the only district from South Africa at the show. The district municipality's stall was shared by emerging small, micro and medium enterprises. The local emerging businesses that attended the show were Tshedza Lodge, Ariye Tours, Porchevilla Hotel, Avkhom Hotel,

Mashamba Mosaic Pottery, Siwela Interior Decoration, Ifa Craft Works, Nyandeni Co-operatives and Musa Grace Ngobeni, which specialises in traditional clothes and beads. “We are very excited that the Vhembe District Municipality hosted such a successful exhibition. We have also managed to put our municipality on the international map," said Vhembe District's portfolio head of development and planning, Cllr Mihloti Ramiyada. She added that Vhembe had a role to play in Zimbabwe, since they would be signing a memorandum of understanding with Buhera Rural District Council in November. "We are also strengthening our relations with Masvingo Province in an exchange programme based on sharing our cultural activities, heritage and indigenous knowledge," added Ramiyada.

Call Centre staff “on strike” Wait until Monday … This was the message to farmers along the Vivo road when they were struck by a power interruption on Sunday afternoon. According to Ms Estelle Kemp, who farms about 45km from Louis Trichardt along this stretch of road, the power went off at around 17:00. Being dependent on electricity for their livelihood and safety, they tried in vain to contact the Makhado Municipality’s after-hours call centre in Eltivillas, Louis Trichardt. Twenty calls later and they were still no closer to an answer. When Kemp eventually got a hold of someone at the electricity department on a different number, they were informed that the call centre staff had closed up shop and gone home. The message to them was to wait until Monday, when the municipality was open again.

The call centre staff apparently abandoned their posts out of protest with regard to overtime payment. They deserted their posts, despite the fact that the call centre is an “essential service”, meaning that, by law, the office should be manned at all times. Municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi on Tuesday confirmed the incident. “The call centre was left unmanned as from 16:45 on Sunday until Monday morning. We do not know the exact reasons, but we are busy investigating as to what had happened to the person who was on duty, and appropriate action will be taken, based on the findings,” Bobodi said. As for the farmers, power supply was eventually restored by 21:30 on Sunday, although one phase was still out and was only repaired on Monday.

Mighty FC hold All Stars to a draw Nobela All Stars came back from a 0-2 deficit and held Mighty FC to a 2-2 draw in their Vodacom Promotional League match at Malamulele Stadium on Saturday. All Stars controlled the proceedings throughout the first half, but they could not find their way through the defence of Mighty. The former Rospa United players, Lucky Shoba and Leabua Lemena, proved to the technical staff that they did not err by signing them from United early this season. The two were a thorn in the flesh of the defenders of Mighty. No goal was seen during the first half, despite numerous at-

tempts by Stars’ strikers. Stars continued to control the game in the last half, but their goal poachers were unlucky. Mighty’s opening goal came in the 58th minute. Their midfielder, Lesiba Mongwe, beat the offside trap and won a loose ball not far from the goal mouth, from where he made no mistake. Mongwe sustained an injury to his knee moments thereafter and the team’s technical staff was forced to replace him with Nelson Mohale. Siyabonga Mnguni of Mighty was cautioned with a card for ignoring the referee’s whistle. Mighty increased the tally through Makwana Nkgapele,

who headed home after a corner kick. The home side introduced Vusimuzi Phiri, Mteteleli Yose and Vongani Shirinda for Sydwell Ritsuri, Harry Chabalala and Rinae Phaswana respectively. They reduced the margin by one in the 79th minute. Thembisani Nevhulamba unleashed a volley, following a scramble within the box. It took Nobela All Stars five minutes to find the equalizer. Leabua Lemena went loose and beat the keeper with a half volley. The players and officials for Mighty were not happy with the goal, saying the scorer was in an offside position.

Dynamos to face United in NFD clash The fight for promotion and to avoid relegation at the end of the season will continue this weekend among the teams which are affiliated to the National First Division. Athough it will not be an easy task for them, Dynamos must win their match in order to keep their title hopes alive. They will travel to Cape Town, where they will test their strength against Chippa United, in the only match that will be played

this evening. United are not easy to beat at their home ground, Philipi Stadium. Teams like Sevutsa Stars, United FC and Carara Kicks can bear testimony to that. Three matches will be played tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon. Vasco da Gama will meet United FC at the Botshabelo Stadium. Carara Kicks will host FC Cape Town at the Phuthaditshaba Stadium and Witbank Spurs will play against Atlie FC at the

Ackerville Stadium in Witbank. Spurs are languishing at the bottom of the log and a win will boost the team’s morale. Another disappointment for FC Basel’s fans FC Basel disappointed their home crowd when they suffered their second successive defeat in their Vodacom Promotional League match last weekend. They were beaten 1-2 by Dinare FC at the Malamulele Stadium on Saturday. Basel had no one to blame for the poor result but themselves as the opponents played the better part of the game with 10 men. The visitors from Polokwane wasted no time before opening their account. They were awarded a free kick in the sixth minute. Nyiko Ngwenya took the ball from the place kick and the keeper of Basel, Solomon Mametsa, watched helplessly as the ball hit the back of the net. Dinare suffered a heavy blow in the 19th minute. Their playmaker, Themba Mabena, was given his marching orders. He tackled Mmboniseni Phungo of Basel from behind and the referee was quick to show him red. Dinare started to play defensive football soon after the incident and relied mostly on counterattacks. They managed to maintain their lead until the end of the first half. Out of frustration, Basel replaced Tsepo Phelwane, Louis Chauke and Hlamulo Maluleke with Livhuwani Netshiendeulu, Ezekiel Nobela and Themba Tshishonga respectively. A defender of Dinare, Bafana

Kali, handled the ball within his own box and the Khapane-based referee awarded a penalty to Basel. Mmboniseni Phungo converted to make it 1-1. The captain of Dinare, Michael Mazibuko, was reprimanded with card for a

continued argument with the referee. Basel did not have enough time to celebrate their equalizing goal as Dinare scored the winner in the 78th minute. Bafana Kali intercepted a back pass and beat the keeper easily.

The opening matches for the Telkom Knockout Cup will be played this weekend. Black Leopards will be lucky if they manage to scrape through to the quarterfinals of the competition. They will rub shoulders with Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg tomorrow evening. Leopards have a score to settle against the Buccaneers. Pirates who beat Lidoda Duvha 3-1 in the final of the Nedbank Cup at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit four months ago. As if that was not enough to stir up the Leopards fans, Pirates again beat them 2-0 in their opening league match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium two months ago. Leopards’ captain, Mongezi Bobe, says they have put everything at the back of their minds and they are looking forward for a positive result tomorrow. Bobe’s counterpart in the Pirates’

camp, Lucky Lekgwathi, revealed that the Buccaneers are sharpened to kill, saying Leopards will be lucky if they lose by a narrow margin tomorrow. The match is scheduled to start at 18:00. In the other matches that will also be played tomorrow, Moroka Swallows will host Mamelodi Sundowns at the Dobsonville Stadium and Amazulu will pay a visit to Bidvest Wits at the Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg. In the only match that will be played this evening, Santos and Maritzburg United will lock horns at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, starting at 20:00. Two matches will be seen on Sunday. Kaizer Chiefs will pay a visit to Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg. Ajax Cape Town will entertain Free State Stars at the Athlone Stadium. Sunday’s matches will all kick off at 15:00.

Benny and Matika in 0-0 draw The Safa Vhembe SAB match between Benny’s Care and Matika FC ended in a goalless draw at the Tshiozwi grounds on Sunday. Benny’s was the superior side from the onset as far as possession of the ball was concerned. This resulted in their putting more pressure on the defence of Matika for the better part of the match. Benny’s missed a golden opportunity in the eighth minute when Phophi Phophi shot wide from the penalty area. Realising that their midfield was weary, the technical department of the local lads introduced Billy Moyo for Clement Maphaba. The second half was characterized by dangerous play from the visitors’ players. In an attempt to calm the situation, the referee flashed several yellow cards in quick succession. Jacob Phaswana and Norman Ndou of the visitors were booked for applying dirty tricks and dangerous play. Lloyd Davhana dribbled past three defenders in a row before beating the keeper, Thulare Muthanga. After the goal, Matika started to change

the action as Benny’s enjoyed ball possession. Matika equalised via Rendani Ngobeni in the 40th minute. The keeper of Matika, Thulare Muthanga, was red-carded for rough play. In the second half, the local lads put more pressure on their opponents. Rendani Galedzane scored his team’s second goal after he received a beautiful pass from Andani Nemalili. Their celebration was cut short when Matika levelled the score, with Ishmael Muloiwa scoring easily. If a soccer match could be won through the number of scoring chances a team creates, Benny’s would have won the match convincingly. Their strikers wasted many opportunities to win the match. The home team’s central backs, Seaview Hlungwane and Innocent Mathatha, were reprimanded with cards for rough tackling and wasting time respectively. Matika introduced Mpho Mudau for Kamogelo Chidi, but this did not have any influence on the outcome of the match. The draw was a fair result for the evenly contested match.
