Wanted fugitive meets the
People s wrath ’
By Elmon Tshikhudo Manowa mahulwane a tshi todou fa a da vhathuni literally means that when the big snakes want to die, they come from the deep, dense bushes to the open area. The same proved to be true for a wanted fugitive who recently escaped from the Thohoyandou Magistrate Court’s holding cells. A fortnight ago, Tshilidzi Masindi, who was facing charges of murder, and rape he had allegedly committed in prison, escaped from the court building while wearing a police uniform. Since then, the police were hunting for him high and low but with no success. On Saturday morning, he came out of his hiding place and allegedly tried to rape two women near the Mvudi River, not far from Thohoyandou. That was his worst mistake. His attempt was futile and he ended up being beaten severely by angry morning communters who came to the rescue of the two women. The scene resembled a slaughterhouse with blood all over after the fierce beating. The timely arrival of the police saved the day when they had to fight angry community members who wanted to finish off the man. He was then naked and bleeding profusely. Within a short space of time, the area was swarming with early morning commuters and traffic came to a complete standstill, with the suspect sprawled on the tarmac. Ambulance personnel arrived and administered first aid on the spot and later took the man away to the hospital.
The badly injured and bleeding Tshilidzi Masindi.
Kutama Nemulodi (29) of Muledane told Limpopo Mirror that she was walking home alone from work at around 06:00 when the man confronted her and asked whether she had met two men going in the opposite direction.“I told the man, who was holding a beer bottle, that I had not met them. Instead of going
away, he asked for a phone to phone his mother, but I told him that I did not have one,” she said. She said he then broke the bottle and threatened her with it. “I tried running away, but I tripped and fell, which gave him the chance to overpower me.” Nemulodi said she was so shocked
when the man ordered her to go with him to the nearest bush, but he changed his mind on the way and said they should take another direction. “I asked him to take whatever he wanted from me but to spare my life. He then said he only wanted to rape me and that I should Fugitive Tshilidzi Masindi was cooperate,” she said. - Continues on p2 recaptured.

Fugitive recovers in hospital (From page 1) She added that while she was going with him, another woman came along who was also alone. He allegedly also threatened her with the bottle and ordered the two of them into the bush. “While there, I managed to free myself and left him with the other girl while I was calling for help from passersby,” Nemulodi added. She said that the man only fled after realizing that people were after him. “I feel so lucky. While the whole thing was happening, I was praying to God, asking Him why this was happening to me. I am releieved that neither of us was raped, but we suffered cuts from the broken bottle,” she said. "The man was so vicious and he would certainly have raped us both, had there been no other people,” she said. The other victim, Thembeni Mathebula of Maungani, said it was just luck that she managed to free herself from the rapist. "I was just helpless but told myself that if I gave up, he would end up raping me. I prayed that God would rescue me and power came onto me and I wrestled with him until I freed myself," she said. Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier
Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed the recapturing of the wanted fugtive. The man will be facing charges of escaping, murder, rape, attempted rape and robbery.

Kuruleni residents support suspects Infuriated community members of Kuruleni village outside Ha-Mashamba went out in numbers last Thursday to support five fellow residents who appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate's Court on charges of arson. The five were arrested in connection with an incident that took place on March 15. They are Samuel Riveli, Brian
Riveli, William Pataka, Edward Gija and Nomsa Chauke. The case was postponed to Tuesday (26th) and they were released without bail. Outside the court, a member of the angry group, Mr Wisani Mabasa, advised the accused to understand the court proceedings and not to respond emotionally since they did not have legal representation. “Some of
us lose our temper easily. That is not allowed in court. We know the community is not guilty,” he said. The community members were arrested subsequent to a fire incident at the home of two brothers who were allegedly terrorising the community. One of the two young men has since been arrested and is in custody, while the other one is still at large.
Disabled businessman Chillboy Rathando, who was a struggling businessman some ten years ago, made sure that his community benefitted from his continuing good work. Rathando (36) of Mauluma in the Nzhelele area is known for his philanthropic work. He has a deformed leg, but has donated school uniforms to the needy on numerous occasions and supports community-orientated initiatives. He owns Rathando Chillboy Cleaning Toilets and Pest Control and, over the years and against all odds, worked extra hard and changed many lives through the Piece Jobs project, an initiative of Phalaphala FM. He also motivates young businesspeople to obtain business skills. Despite his disability, he continues to make a meaningful contribution in the lives and economic development of the community and, a fortnight ago, invited all stakeholders who have supported him, just to say thank you. The event was also aimed at celebrating his company's ten years of existence. Multitudes came from all over the country, as well as guests from Zimbabwe and Botswana. Among the esteemed guests was renowned musician Kanda Bongoman from the DRC, who is now based in Thohoyandou.

Mushavhanamadi was born in 1960 at Ngovhela village as the third-born of Sarah and the late Robert Mushavhanamadi in a family of four children. He started schooling at Ngovhela Primary and later went to Guvhukuvhu and Mphaphuli secondary schools. Before he reached matric, he left for Guateng where he worked as a guard. In 1984, he came back home and trained as a police officer with the then Venda Police. He worked at the police band and was later appointed as the communication officer, with the rank of captain. He was later promoted to spokesperson for the Thohoyandou police station and then to head of communications for all police stations in Vhembe. During that time, Mushavhanamadi managed to improve the image of the police through his morning slot with Phalaphala FM. During his broadcasts,
Mushavhanamadi always encouraged the community to work hand in hand with the police to make the district safer. In 2003, the then Far North Media Association honoured Mushavhanamadi as the best communicator. In 2010, Mushavhanamadi, who was then a qualified lawyer, joined the University of Venda as head of security, the position he was still occupying until his death. While at Univen, he continued with his studies and he received a master's degree in law from Univen. He was last heard on Phalaphala FM on the afternoon of 14 August, a day before his death. He then gave an update on the improvements in security measures at Univen. He will be buried tomorrow (Saturday), at Ngovhela. He is survives by his wife, Betty, and three children, two girls and one boy.

Nurses’ suspension and final warning revoked in clinic case The suspension and final warning meted against two nurses who were previously attached to Khakhu clinic were revoked by an independent appeals committee last week. The provincial spokesperson of the Department of Health, Mr Macks Lesufi, said that the negligence case against the two nurses was dismissed when their appeal was heard. “The department heard their case after the complaint by the parents of the late child,” he said,
“and the department's disciplinary committee gave what it deemed an appropriate sentence against the nurses.” Initially, one nurse had been served with a final written warning while the other was suspended for a month and served with a final written warning. The nurse who had been put on one-month suspension was not satisfied with the department's decision and she lodged an appeal. “The independent appeal committee found that there was no scientific evidence or proof that the nurses were negligent or guilty,” he said. According to Lesufi, the nurses would have reported back to work at the time of going to press. This case made newspaper headlines late last year when three nurses at the Khakhu clinic allegedly refused to help the 19-month-old baby Mulalo Prince Mulaudzi. Mulalo's parents, Mr Mashudu and Mrs Mumsy Mulaudzi, criticised the department's decision this week. “What I have just realised with our government is that the important thing is for the nurses to go back to work,” he said. “Human life is not (as) important here in Limpopo's health department.” Mulaudzi argued that the nurses on duty should have called for an ambulance to rush his son to hospital if it was true that they were busy attending to another patient. “People who say that those nurses are not guilty do not even go to government clinics or hospitals when they are sick. They know that there is no help in those health centres!” Mulaudzi said that there was an official who had Mr Mashudu Mulaudzi is not satisfied with the identified himself as Mr Nengudza from Vhembe's health department's decision. Bontle Makgoba, a Grade 1 pupil of Louis Trichardt Primary School, was killed in a vehicle accident on Monday morning. She was travelling with her mother, Mrs Esther Makgoba, and her baby sister when the accident happened. They were driving from a weekend visit to family in the Munnik area when Mrs Makgoba allegedly lost control of the vehicle. Mrs Makgoba was seriously injured and was taken by helicopter to the MediClinic in Polokwane, where she received treatment. Bontle’s younger sister was not injured. No funeral arrangements were available at the time of going to press. Photo supplied.
health office. Nengudza supposedly told him to stop wasting his time because the media had already taken his case to the Public Protector, who would then address it accordingly. “He thinks I am a fool,” Mulaudzi said. “He has been trying to cover up everything and discouraging me from complaining to his office.” Mulaudzi said that his final resolve was to seek a lawyer and appeal against the department's decision to dismiss the case.

The untimely death of Adv Alilwei Mushavhanamadi came as a shock to his family, colleagues and the entire community of Vhembe. According to his elder brother, Konanani, Mushavhanamadi died in a hotel room at the Holiday Inn in Millpark last Friday. The spokesperson for the University of Venda, Takalani Dzaga, confirmed that Mushavhanamadi was in Johannesburg to attend a training session at Wits. "We are greatly saddened by his death. It is more painful when we consider that he seemed healthy when we were with him here at work. His death came as a shock. We are still depressed by his untimely death," says Dzaga. At the time of going to press, the family was still waiting for the post mortem results to determine the cause of death. Neither the university nor his family suspects foul play.

4 22 August 2014 Tshikuwi village at Nzhelele has never been without a leader, said Vhavenda Azwihangwisi Lawrence Lifhiga. He reacted to a recent report in this newspaper that Headman ‘Phiri Phiri’ was inaugurated as the headman of Tshikuwi. It came to our attention that Tshikuwi is divided into two villages, TshikuwiTshahalifhiga and Ramalamula village. Headman Khathutshelo Ramalamula was recently installed in Ramalamula village after a period of two years without a community leader at the village. Headman Thavhadziawa Lifhiga is the leader of Tshikuwi and, according to Vhavenda Azwihangwisi Lifhiga, Lifhinga has been ruling Tshikuwi village since the passing of his father. Mr Mbengeni Lihiga (left) and Vhavenda Azwihangwisi Lorence Lifhiga confirmed to Limpopo Mirror that there has always been a headman in Tshikuwi.
Natasha Walberer (centre), a parent of the Saryna Kiddi Care School in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), accompanied some of the kiddies on the spinning tea cups ride at the Merry-GoRound of the Soutpansberg Primary School last Thursday. This was the second year that Souties hosted the three-day-long event as part of an annual fundraising event. Photo left: Is this just a case of very bad parking manners or blatant arrogance? Several pedestrians and shop owners questioned the abi lities and attitude of this driver when he disregarded traffic rules on Saturday to park on the side walk in Songozwi Street, Makhado. Shop owners com plained that he was blocking the flow of pedestrians and the entrance to their shops, but he apparently did not care much and merely remarked that “this is the way I park”.
Kurhuleni Happy Fighters (photo) were crowned the champions of the Kurhuleni Soccer Challenge tournament last Saturday. They beat Hozana Citizens FC 5-3 in the final of the tournament that was staged at Kurhuleni. The winner was determined through penalty shootout after a 1-1 stalemate at full time. Fighters beat Phadziri FC 2-0 in the first semifinal earlier that day. Fighters received R2 500 during a ceremony held at the grounds shortly after the final. The runners-up, Hozana Citizens FC, received R1 000, while the two teams booted out in the semifinal stage of the tournament, Phadziri FC and Mission Young Rovers, received consolation prizes of R250 each. A home for the Marhumekes at last The Marhumekes seemed to be the happiest family in Mambedi, near Elim, after the department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) finally completed their house a fortnight ago. The family's plight was first published in Limpopo Mirror some two years ago, after their makeshift abode was blown apart by a rainstorm in October 2012. The beneficiary, Ms Maria Marhumeke, said that she was relieved that, even though the Pictured in front the new house are (from left to right) Mr Julius Chauke (Sanco), Ms Mojadji family had suffered displacement and homelessness for two years, a Marhumeke, Rivalani Marhumeke, Ms Maria Marhumeke and Ms Maria Ndekeni. house was finally built for them. “I want to thank Coghsta, the local Sanco and the Limpopo Mirror for publishing our plight,” she said. The local Sanco branch reported the family's case to the
local ward committee just after their abode was destroyed by the rainstorm, so that the committee could alert Ward 28's Cllr Alpheus Mmbadi. Mmbadi, however, said that he hadn't received any report from the ward committee or local Sanco each time that Limpopo Mirror contacted him for comment. On Friday, Maria was furious when Limpopo Mirror visited the family. “[Cllr] Mmbadi came here last week and told us that he was the one who built this house for us,” she said. “He posed in front our house and his friend took some pictures of him, using his cellphone. He's taking us for granted because we are not educated. We are not happy with him.” The local Sanco branch's chairperson, Ms Maria Ndekeni, who is also the Marhumekes' neigh-
bour, said that politicians must stop using poor people like the Marhumekes as stepping stones to higher positions. “If he's telling the Marhumekes that he built them a house, he's totally wrong,” she said. “Maria does not have an ID book and her four children do not have birth certificates either. All these children are not on the child grant's payroll. We are using money from our own pockets to transport Maria to and from Home Affairs in Makhado to apply for her ID book and her children's birth certificates, the kind of job which Mmbadi should have been doing.” When contacted for comment, Cllr Mmbadi said he didn't wish to comment. “The municipality has got a spokesperson,” he said.

director, Gregg Fillmore, said this would mostly benefit children who may not have access to a structured study facility. “Some children do not necessarily have structured facilities when studying at home - this opportunity will hopefully take care of that aspect.” The service will be available during normal campus hours, Monday to Friday (08:00 – 17:00) and on Saturdays from 08:00 to 13:00.

Takalani Sesame visits Makhado!
By Isabel Venter Local toddlers came from far and wide to attend the Sanlam Takalani Sesame Road Show that was hosted in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) over the weekend. The queues started early, as eager toddlers waited to get their picture taken with Kami and Neno, two Muppets of the Takalani Sesame show. Their picture was taken and printed for free, and while they waited, the children were entertained with various activities. There were jumping castles, jumping ropes, hula hoops and scooters in play areas for the tods to play to their hearts’ content.
Afterwards, there were two live shows where Kami, Neno and Zikwe entertained the toddlers and their parents. Their show was not only entertaining, but also informative - the children learnt from Kami, who is HIV positive, the importance of maintaining your health by means of healthy food and plenty of exercise. Kami and Zikwe also explained to the children how to be penny wise and save their allowance money. Between the Muppet shows, other singers and dancers also entertained the local crowds. Another exciting line-up was the Sanlam Blown

Away competition; a lucky draw competition with a twist. Ticket holders were selected from the crowd to participate in the competition by drawing their numbers from a hat. They had to stand in the Sanlam booth, while fans blew tickets around them, and snatch a prize ticket before their time ran out. One woman managed to win a new refrigerator. For the parents there were also representatives from the departments of health and education, offering free advice, and Sanlam financial advisers offering financial guidance. • Willie Venter 079 344 2737 • Anthonie Krügell 072 225 3599 • Gert Coetzee 083 327 5128

“We will not rest until we get the title deeds” They were among the first to have businesses in Sibasa, but their area looks like a long-forgotten slum in the fast-growing town. Some of the businesses are more than 50 years old, but they are still housed in the old buildings they used to be. For many years the occupants of the buildings have been struggling to get the title deeds to their sites. They have tried everything in the book to have their properties legalised through the right channels, but they have been sent from pillar to post, with no success. Recently, the aggrieved businesspeople, known as the Sibasa Business Pioneers, met to chart the way forward. The members of the group are veteran shopkeepers Radzhadzhi Mukwevho of Mukeguluni Restaurant and Butchery, Solomon Badugela of Sibasa Barber Shop, Alice Muthige and George Madima of Sibasa Bicycle Shop and Nehemiah In sharp contrast, on the other side is a developed area. Lukoto of Lukoto Bus Service. “We have been in this struggle for quite a long time, starting during the time of the old regime. When the new dispensation came into power, we thought our woes would be history and that we would get our own title deeds. This was not to be as we are still struggling and suffering, even in the era of a government that we have voted for,” said George Madima, the spokesperson of the group. He said they had been to the municipality quite a number of times, but all the time the municipality has not given them a fair hearing. “We are very hurt, because Theirs is a slum with buildings more than 50 years old. They have plans to develop the area, but we were the first black do not have title deeds. businessmen to start
businesses in this town, but our businesses are not growing as we could not develop the area without title deeds.” He added that on the other side of the road, it was a different story altogether. “Indian businesspeople who arrived yesterday have been granted title deeds, but we are still struggling to get them.” He said the last straw was when people from the municipality came and started demarcating their sites without even informing them. “We chased them away, because we suspected that they wanted to sell our properties while we occupy them. There is a rumour that our area has been sold to rich Indian businesspeople by corrupt municipality officials,”
said Madima. According to him, the provincial land claims office was not able to assist, “saying that we have not been moved from our area as we still occupy our sites.” They have also appointed lawyers to assist, but are still without any answer. “We do not know what to do and where to go now as no one seems prepared to listen to us,” said Solomon Badugela. Thulamela municipal spokesperson Nndwamato Tshiila said the said sites had been paid for by the former Venda government. “The area was earmarked for development and people received compensation, but they did not move. We have been in constant engagement with the parties, but we have not been able to reach consensus.”
The offices of Bolobedu Driving School in Thohoyandou were abuzz with activities a fortnight ago, during the birthday celebration of Mercy Manngo-Netshiozwi (centre). She is an office administrator at Bolebedu Driving School, next to Limpopo Mirror’s offices in Thohoyandou, and she celebrated her 31st birthday in style. In celebrating her special day, friends and students at the driving school enjoyed a big birthday cake.

“Makhado municipality is failing”
T
he Economic Freedom Front (EFF) is deeply concerned about issues relating to service delivery around Makhado town. There has been no street lights in most of the streets and one wonders what the money for services is used for. In Eltivillas Ext 1, people bought erven at hundreds of thousands in 2008 and there are just a few streets with lights and the rest have no lights installed. There are several cases of burglary that have been reported to the police and the EFF believes that the darkness that prevails during the night is contributing a lot. We believe that erven in any town should never be sold before the area is fully developed.
Makhado is the only town where people buy untarred erven without water meters connected to their yards. The municipality has been forced to turn a blind eye on the high installation of water tanks, which contradicts some by-laws, due to the fact this problem has been there for more than a decade and it is the municipality that has failed the people. The District Mayor recently announced over the radio that the problem of water has been permanently solved. This is ironic, since water is not always available. - Kenny Maboho, Subregion co-ordinator (secretary), EFF

Elderly women see more value in trees People love trees for different reasons. Some see them as a source of energy as they chop them for wood and some used it to decorate their yards. A group of more than a 100 elderly women from four different rural villages in Venda have found gold in trees. The group, under the wings of the Mupo Foundation from Tshidzivhe, Vhutanda, Tshivhale and Vuvha, have come together and formed a cooperative that plants indigenous trees from seeds and sells them to organizations, departments and other stakeholders. Ms Mphatheleni Dima, the leader of the group, which comprises of 30 women from each of the villages, said the idea came as a way of poverty alleviation and job creation by her organization. “Many of our people are not
working and there are many ways through which these people could make a sustainable living: planting trees for sale is one of them. There is so much deforestation in our areas and many trees have been chopped down for wood and some have been cut due to development in some areas. There is no other way to replenish the lost trees than to plant new ones.” She added that they were specializing in indigenous trees. They started with the training in 2008 and planting started in 2010. “In 2011 we started selling our first trees and since then we have not looked back. Through this project, many lives have been changed. Many of our families are now able to put a plate of food on their tables.’ They are also trained in organic food production. “We also competed in international com-
petitions, which makes us very proud. Soon, 16 of the members representing the four villages will be off to Zimbabwe for training. Our members are paid quarterly and according to the number of trees they planted. Some are getting amounts up to more than R30 000,” she said. She said they were also rehabilitating the rivers. “We planted 1 200 trees at Matsila through the Adopt A River project. Our trees are everywhere in the district, and outside,” she said. Ms Tshinakaho Netshidzivhe of Tshidzivhe said trees were their babies. “Trees need extra care for them to grow nicely, and we make sure we look after them at all times, “ she said. The mother of four children said she was able to take her children to school through the money she got from selling the trees.
Honours degree for dedicated teacher A local educator, Mrs Angie’tjie Phaswana, recently completed her honours degree in education at the North West University (Potchefstroom campus). She has been married to the Rev (Dr) Ntavhanyeni Phaswana for 29 years and received her degree a few days before her birthday on 8 August. She matriculated in 1992 at Nngweni Secondary School in Dzanani and completed her secondary teacher’s diploma in 1997 at the Modjadji College of Education. She also received
advanced certificates in 2010 and 2011 from Potchefstroom and Unisa. She is a dedicated teacher with countless responsibilities. She is the mother of three and also co-director and principal of Paradise Maname Combined School at Nzhelele, co-director of Machaka Learning Academy at Matoks, co-director of Shukran Printers at Biaba and co-director of Bo-die-Krans Lodge at Biaba. She is also the area manager of the Independent Electoral Commission of the Makhado Municipality and
the deputy chairperson of the Vhuilafuri Prayer Women’s League. Her message to the youth is: “Do not postpone work. Work hard and remain focused. Each time you succeed, the angels in heaven rejoice.” For her birthday present and outstanding achievement, her husband took her on a trip to China. “As a family we believe in cause and effect. You do good, you are rewarded; you do bad, you are punished. Our communities should not reward laziness and mediocrity,” Dr Phaswana said.

Eight injured when bakkie hit taxi A huge crowd recently converged at the scene of an accident at Madabani after a taxi and bakkie collided. The taxi overturned after hitting the bakkie that had allegedly made a U-turn right in front of it. According to Const Munyadziwa Marindi of the Tshilwavhusiku SAPS, the incident took place on Monday, 4 Augus. “Members of the traffic police and paramedics rushed to the scene and the injured were taken to the Tshilwavhusiku Health Centre for treatment.
Eight people, including the bakkie driver, were later transferred to the Makhado Memorial Hospital,” he said. Marindi added that the police were investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving. The driver of the minibus taxi, Mr Tshimangadzo Maduwa, said that everything happened very fast. “The driver of the bakkie made a U-turn and hit my taxi head on. I tried to avoid him, but it was already too late. I was lucky to survive and I thank God because I could have lost my
life,” he said. One of the survivors, Dakalo Mabudugu, said the accident happened so suddenly that no one even managed to scream. He said the bakkie was swerving from one side of the road to the other before hitting the taxi. “We were very lucky to survive. We heard a big bang and then the taxi started rolling several times. There was a huge cloud of dust and we could not see what was happening,” he added. Dakalo suffered minor injuries to his head and fractured both legs.
The taxi rolled several times before coming to a standstill next to the road.

New UAAC branch at Itsani
The leader of the United African Apostolic Church (UAAC), Archbishop Elias Miriri, has urged members to be united and to love one another. Miriri, who leads one of the biggest Zionist churches in Africa, was speaking during the official opening of the church’s new branch at Itsani on Sunday. During the event, many who distinguished themselves were elevated to senior positions. The founder of the new branch, Juffrou Betty Mudau, was also honoured by the church leader. After Miriri took the podium to address the congregation, heavy showers of rain fell, which people translated as a sign of good things to come to the new branch. “Unity is Archbishop Elias Miriri and senior church members are shown around one of the weapons that we could use to overpower our enemy, and when the new church building.

Dinah Denga the best export farmer Ms Dinah Denga of Nwanedi went home of the provincial female farmer of the year R60 000 richer, after she was crowned the competition held at a hotel near Polokwane champion in the export market category a fortnight ago. The MEC for Agriculture, Ms Joy Matshoge, said during the event that the participation of women in a male-dominated industry was very important as they could contribute in the fight against hunger, unemployment and poverty. She criticised the “discriminatory past which limited women from acquiring land,” and stated that the government would assist the farming community. Denga said she was greatly honoured and very excited. “At least it is a symbol that people appreciate what I am doing. It really motivates me, and it is a challenge that I must start preparing myself to participate on national level,” she said. She urged other women to stop complaining Doing the presentation to the winner are MEC about a lack of jobs. “There are plenty of opJoy Motshoge (left), Ms Dinah Denga and Ms portunities made available by the government Magareth Mathabatha, wife of Premier Stan to ensure that women are able to enter into any kind of business, including farming,” she said. WOMEN’S MONTH 2014 Celebrating The Limpopo Provincial Government is celebrating Women's Month and 20 years of freedom. This is the freedom that many women sacrificed their family time and other luxuries fighting to achieve. These women were prepared to die so that they can have equal rights with men in relation to property, marriage and bodily integrity. The country has achieved a lot in the past 20 years to create job opportunities and improve the livelihood of women. In the next coming five years the Limpopo Provincial Government will focus its attention and resources to: " " " "
people are united, they can achieve great things together. This a place of peace and worship; let us love one another and the community will learn from us,” he said. He hailed the founder, Juffrou Betty Mudau, as a hard worker, who is dedicated to the service of God. “This is your leader. Please do support her and let there be no differences among you, and all would be well in this church,” he said. Pastor Abel Thovhakale, one of the leaders at the new branch, said it started as a dream which finally became a reality. “We did not have money when we started this project last year, but through prayers and contributions from members, most of whom are not even working, we managed to complete this building.”
recruitment drive”
The Limpopo Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure has distanced itself from false internship advertisements presently circulating in the province. In a media statement, the department says that they have learnt that an internship advertisement is currently circulating on social media and also on the Puff and Pass website. It indicates that the department is currently recruiting interested members of the public for an internship programme, for which the closing date is indicated as 31 October 2014. The department warns, however, that the advertisement does not originate from the department and that no such recruitment is currently underway. “We’d like to inform members of the public that we know nothing about this recruitment process as it does not originate from the department. We promise, however, to investigate the matter and get to the bottom of it, for we cannot allow people to play with the emotions of those people desperately looking for jobs. We will employ all the resources at our disposal into this matter until we get to the bottom of its origin. Those found to be in the wrong will be dealt with accordingly,” said MEC Azwinndini Jeremiah Dingaan Ndou in the statement.

Plain Truth
By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho
Focus on sign and verbal language interpretation When we talk about interpreters, a lot of South Africans may immediately think of Thamsanqa Jantjie, the “fake” sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela’s funeral. He managed to dent the profession’s reputation severely with his false and amateurish attempt to translate US president Barack Obama’s speech. Interpreting, however, is an indispensable profession that breaks language barriers and allows people from different worlds to communicate with each other. Limpopo Mirror caught up with Sign-language interpreter and service provider three local interpreters, two practising Mr David Ligammba. sign language, to learn more about their work. Ms Masindi Sadiki, who has 38 years experience as an interpreter, says that she became involved in sign language interpreting in the early 1980s when she became a teacher at Tshilidzini Special School. “I had to interpret at all services taking place within the institution, and I also had to accompany learners to various sporting and cultural activities,” she said. “My interpreting services were gradually extended to church sermons and expanded further to assist when deaf people were involved in weddings and funerals.” Sadiki mentioned that a big challenge for an interpreter is the financial strain that travelling brings. “There are very few sign language interpreters in Limpopo,” she said. “The absence of sign language in servicing the deaf is disastrous and even worse if the individual is illiterate.” She also feels that people must stop viewing sign language interpreters as people who are doing charitable work. “Some service providers in the government, NGOs, communities and institutions such as churches usually request services for free during their events,” she said. “These occasions usually take place in different geographical areas that put a financial strain on the sign language interVerbal interpreter and translator: Ms Ella preter.” Chioma née Maluleke. Ms Sadiki does, however, enjoy
doing her job. “This is an interesting and enjoyable field of expertise,” she says. “I love every moment of it.” Ms Ella Chioma née Maluleke (49) is a professional interpreter currently attached to the Louis Trichardt Magistrate Court’s offices. She received advanced training in interpreting as preparation for her work. “I am well equipped and fluent in 13 languages, including Shona and Cewa (one used in Malawi),” she says. “I speak all 13 languages fluently, and I can translate any document from one language to another with ease.” Chioma maintains that she enjoys her work and further urges those interested in the field to go ahead by registering for a course with an institution which offers interpreting as a course. A talented sign language interpreter, Mr David Ligammba (44), fell in love with sign language after meeting Mr Takalani Mulaudzi, who later became his closest friend. “He is deaf and he helped me understand the importance of learning sign language,” he says. Ligammba obtained a diploma in sign language interpreting from the University of the Free State. He started working at Dzanani Magistrate Court as a sign-language interpreter after finishing his diploma course. “I also worked at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as a storyteller for the deaf community,” he says. “I have also worked for the SABC, helping compile Tshivenda news bulletins.” He has further worked for both the public and private sector in Limpopo and Gauteng. All his experience allowed him to start a private company, Mulisa Sign Language Providers. “The company gives sign language courses, translations, orientation, mobility and interpreting services,” he says.
The quest for morality
Unmasking the challenges facing marriage today Marriage and family life are losing the spark and value they used to command in the old days. You often hear of couples divorcing or killing each other in the name of love, to a point that children grow up despising the marriage institution. It is common in our times to hear of children who vow not to get married in their lifetime, because of the trauma experienced at home and in society. What has gone wrong with our society? Why is it that the institution of marriage and family life are deteriorating at a rapid rate? Marriage is under constant attack from the devil. There is no doubt about that. I would like to use this article to point out at some of the snares that the devil is using to lure people out of their marriages, namely: (1) promotion of a culture which undermines the value of marriage and family in society; (2) young girls and boys are no longer interested in engaging their peers but married people. They are better off with married men or women than dating or engaging their peers; (3) the love of money has prompted so many married people to desert their families for those with serious financial muscles. The affluenza virus to have more material possessions, as driven by the spirit of consumerism, is sweeping the globe and also targeting marriages. While some people are interested in marrying those who are wealthy, others prefer to remain single when they are rich and wealthy. In the process, they opt to hunt for any man or woman that they want. There are people who go around boasting that they can get any man or woman that they want by just flashing their dollars.
(4) lack of discipline on the part of married men and women, especially when they are not sexually fulfilled in their marriages. Instead of seeking help, they opt out in order to search for greener pastures somewhere else; (5) the influence of the media is also used by the devil to destroy as many marriages and families as possible. Explicit pornography shown on TV channels is not meant to enhance intimacy in the marriage context but to destroy it. Pornography is very addictive and those who are hooked to it end up losing their marriages and families; (6) the excessive use of social networks is destroying many marriages. It is easy to connect and get hooked to someone on Facebook, to the point of even starting an affair with such a person. There are so many marriages going under because of social networks; (7) the virus that I call “busyology” is killing many marriages. People are too busy to pay attention to their marriages and families anymore. Failure to balance work and family is part of this virus which is destroying marriage institution; (8) lack of proper communication in marriage is one of the underlying factors as to why many marriages are falling apart. We no longer have a sense of respect as couples. This list is not meant to be exhaustive but to open our eyes to see the reality of things happening in our midst. These are also not written just to expose the wrongs and ills in our society but to make a passionate plea for all of us to rise to the challenge and save our marriages. Our next article will therefore focus on: “Save your marriage campaign”. - mashatd@unisa.ac.za

A touching story with a magic ending
I
have been employed by Eureka for the past 18 months. One of the clients that was assigned to me was Buco, Shayandima. Upon calling on Buco, I met Eggie Rasiluma. Always a smile on her face and a person who does not allow her circumstances to influence who and what she is. We started having discussions and getting acquainted with each other and then she shared her story about how she ended up in the situation of being in a wheelchair. I felt really saddened by this and realised that life throws all kinds of curve balls your way, but with the right attitude, these too can be overcome. Where there’s a will – there’s a way - all is possible. Eggie is such an example of this. Eggie is in dire need of a new wheelchair, as her chair took a real battering with the severe floods that recently caused total havoc in the area and the fact that she was struck by a mini-bus taxi a short while ago. For some time now, I no longer call on this store as an alternative area has been assigned to me, but nonetheless we stayed in touch and I took it upon myself to see what contribution I could make to try to resolve the situation and make her life less
of a challenge. Many suggestions were made i.e. for me to approach various companies and/or private individuals for donations to raise funds in order to purchase a new wheelchair. Upon mentioning this to management and staff at Eureka DIY, they were the first on board to join me in my endeavour to raise the necessary funds. Eureka’s management and staff undertook to match any contributions and/or donations that would be made. With that said, my journey began. I started exploring the market for the most suitable wheelchair to meet with Eggie’s needs and received quotes from various companies who specialize in this market. I was referred to a company, CE Mobility, and communicated with them telephonically very late on a Friday afternoon. Samantha Ackerman, representative of CE Mobility, requested that I draft an e-mail stating my case and providing them with all the details with regard to Eggie. I sent the e-mail off early on Monday morning and by 09:30 that morning, CE Mobility undertook to supply Eggie with a wheelchair - free of
charge! This wheelchair was custom made to meet with Eggie’s posture, weight and height and with that they also supplied a memory foam cushion to make it even more comfortable for her. CE Mobility have also walked the extra mile for Eggie and have also undertaken to supply her with a new set of tyres, if and when needed in the future. The chair was handed to Eggie on Friday, 1 August 2014, with the compliments of CE Mobility and with the assistance of Dirk Steenkamp, branch manager of Buco, who has arranged for all the staff at Buco, Shayandima to be present in sharing this joyous event to make memorable moments. I trust that Eggie will have many “happy miles” with her new wheels. It has been a long journey but one that I can honestly say has been worth my while and undoubtedly, most fulfilling. With great appreciation, many thanks to each and every individual who was prepared to take part in this endeavour and an even bigger thank you to those who participated and made it happen. - Mone van Wyk
Model to help girls to prepare for matric dance All across the country, excitement is building for the annual matric farewell functions, but this glamorous night can be very frustrating if a learner doesn't have any budget at all and little knowledge on how to prepare for such a function. A local model, Ms Thanyani Nemavhulani (22), is willing to assist girls in the region and help them prepare for the event. Thanyani, who hails from Ha-Rabali in Nzhelele, said her project would specifically focus on Grade 12 girls coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, so they too can afford the best night ever. "I've gone through that pain of not attending a matric dance, and I believe that my project will create awareness for matric girls, irrespective of their background,” she said. This BSc degree student at the University of South Africa and a model from Limpopo Beauty Academy has no fond memories of her matric dance, but she believes that, with the assistance of the community, things can be different for many other girls. She also appealed to ladies who can donate dresses and shoes to contact her. Thanyani needs more than 50 dresses from donors to give to needy pupils. So far, she has already acquired a make-up artist, but she also needs shoes for the girls. “I have already acquired some of the items, but if there are people who are willing to help, they can contact me,” she said. Nemavhulani can be contacted on 071 277 5525.

Farmers receive inportant information The conditions faced by farmers in the Vhembe region, whose progress leaves much to be desired because of challenges and handicaps, could soon change for the better. This follows a meeting between stakeholders attached to the farming business, who offered an information-sharing session with the farmers. The session, an initiative by African Farmers Association of South Africa (AFASA), took place at the Thohoyandou Indoor Centre a fortnight ago. forced out of business by challenges which, if addressed, could be overcome. “Our government is always saying there must be development and growth in our businesses, but this is not possible with the type of obstacles we have in the district. Most of us are out of business now because we cannot afford to pay electricity, which is very expensive,” said Mathidi. He added that some of the farmers were nowhere close to paying the stipulated minimum wage as per government legislation. According to him, most farmers were fearful of labour inspectors, as they felt they were not abiding by the labour rules. “Many of us do not even understand these labour laws, and many do not know about packages Eskom has for farmers that could save us a lot.” Another of the obstacles faced
by farmers is operating their businesses on hearsay, which makes them not sure of what they are doing, causing their businesses to fail. “As farmers, we are very happy today that we have all the information at our disposal. We will make use of it and all our woes will be a thing of the past. Not long from now, we will be smiling all the way to the bank,” concluded Mathidi. The chief director of provincial operations of the Department of Labour, Mr Albert Tshidavhu, shared with them the sectoral wage determination, foreign employees and basic labour issues. “I am happy that many are adhering to the rules as set out by the department, but there are some who need such sessions as we are having here today,” he said.

Happy staff members of Mulisa Foods and The Victorious Community pose for a photograph during the handover of the money. By Elmon Tshikhudo
Mulisa donates R80 000 to disadvantaged The lives of more than 140 disadvantaged children at Ha-Budeli outside Thohoyandou will change for the better, following an R80 000 donation from Mulisa Foods. The company, which owns KFC outlets in Thohoyandou, Malamulele and Sibasa, collected the money from customers at their branches, who were asked to donate R2 when making purchases at the branches. The money was handed over to a non-profit organization, The Victorious Community, which is maintaining the otherwise hopeless kids from disadvantaged backgrounds. The contingent from Mulisa Foods, led by director Tshivhidzo Mulaudzi, arrived at the organization’s offices a fortnight ago. Their arrival brightened up the day of the children’s guardians, who were smiling from ear to ear. In receiving the donation, Mr Christopher Netshandama, director of The Victorious Community, said they had started the organization in 2011 as a multi-purpose centre, answering the challenges the community was facing. “Here we are talking of a community that is next to the huge Nandoni Dam, which experienced a high influx during the construction. There are cases of HIV/Aids, orphans and vulnerable children which needed to be responded to and we came in as the answer,” he said. He said the organization had challenges as they did not have a sustainable donor, which made sustaining their programmes very difficult, and with only one computer, it was very difficult to capture the organization’s data. Community leader Robert Tshamano commended Mulisa Foods for having a soft heart for the disadvantaged. “What you have done here will forever linger in our minds. We have learnt that there are businesses that care for others and are not only focussing on making profits,” he said. Mulisa Foods’s director, Tshivhidzo Mulaudzi, said they were happy when they were approached for donations for the less privileged. “We identified
this organization after learning of the good job they are doing in the community and especially caring for the less privileged. We are happy that we are doing our part and contributing towards the betterment of the lives of the less privileged.”

Home Defenders top in Tshipota games Gogobole Home Defenders were crowned as champions of the ET Tshipota Electrical Contractor soccer challenge after beating Gogobole Bucs 6-4 at Gogobole on Sunday. Early in the first half of the match, two players of Bucs, Thomas Mhlongo and Tuwiseni Mulaudzi, were cautioned with yellow cards. The two cards did not dampen their fighting spirit as they were attacking from all corners of the field. The wheel of fortune turned against Defenders in the 49th minute. Their defender, Calvin Ramusheu, failed to stop the ball and Steve Ramalivha scored easily.
The technical staff of the visiting team could not forgive him for the blunder and he was replaced with Tshishonga Tshishonga. Defenders’ equaliser was scored by Phethani Sikhwivhilu from a free kick. After the goal, Defenders regrouped and started to dictate terms. They were led by their midfield link man, Phethani Sikhwivhilu. They raided the Bucs’ danger area continuously, but Lady Luck was not on their side. They tried to “walk” the ball into the net, but the Bucs defence was rock solid. The home team then introduced Fhulu Ramabulana for Vila Ndwambi, but it did not change the complexion of the match and the game finished without any more excitement.
The winners of this year’s SACM (South African Custodial Management) charity Golf Day was the team of Surat. The Soutpansberg Golf Club in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) once again played host to this popular annual event. From left to right are the winning team members: Colbert Machumela, Khangale Malange and Mutshutshudzi Mbedzi. They won with a total of 94 Stableford points. Team member Major Patel was not available when the photograph was taken.

“Teamwork is important”- coach “There was teamwork among the players, management and the technical staff and that made my job easy,” said the coach of Benny’s Care, Mr Justice Matloga. He was very thrilled after his team had recently won the Sanlam Kay Motsepe provincial title for the fourth time. He said the players and management were very commitment and “it shows that we are destined for success in this tournament. We now plan is to win the national title. We will work hard in making sure that we win the nationals.” Matloga has been coaching at the school since 2004 and he has built an understanding with his players. “Communication is the key. We communicate with the players, and we try to keep a level of professionalism in everything we do,” he added. He said he tried to keep the players humble and grounded. “They should always maintain a level of respect for the tournament and for their opponents.” He singled out winger Mutshidzi Nemaxwi as a key player in the team. He attended trials at the school in 2010 when he was 13 years old and was enrolled. “We were impressed by his skills and his talent.
He has a bright future in soccer and I will do everything to help him progress further,” Matloga said. About his tactics for the final, Matloga emphasised that it would be very tough. “We need to go back to the drawing board and analyse our game plan. There is a lot that can improve. We need to focus on building stamina, on dribbling skills and making sure that the players don’t let nerves be their downfall,” he said.

Chippas too good for Shayandima Stars In their opening match for the Limpopo Women’s Soccer Tournament at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday, Chippas Ladies beat Shayandima Morning Stars 3-1 to secure a place in the final. The game was equally contested throughout the first half, but Morning Stars lost their original fighting spirit with time. Although Stars lost cohesion in the middle of the park at some stage, their overlapping centre back, Pinana Unezwa, remained a live wire. Chippas squandered two clear chances in the 14th and 24th minute respectively. Tsepo Maluleke received a neat pass from Gudani Nephalama and hesitated for far too long to unleash within the box until she lost possession. As if that was not enough to upset the fans, Nthabiseng Matswi’s volley went a little wide in the 24th minute. Chippas finally took the lead in the 34th minute. Tshepiso Mamoropeli beat the offside trap and sent Stars’ keeper, Mulalo Mudau, the wrong way to bring the half-time score to 1-0. Olga Netshidzivhani of Morning Stars was booked for a late tackle on Gudani Nephalama three minutes into the last half. That did not deter Morning Stars from fighting as they continued to fight collectively in their search for the equalizer. Musiiwa Ramaremisa scored the Stars’ equalizer, following a heartbreaking scramble within the box. Chippas were awarded a free kick just outside the box in the 68th minute. Lotaya Nndwa beat the keeper with a volley from the place kick. Chippas were forced to effect a change to their starting line-up after Tshepiso Mamoropeli sustained a knee injury. Chippas increased the margin via Tshepo Maluleke. She unleashed from outside the box. Mkateko Sithole of Chippas was given her

Happy Fighters on top in local tournament The 2-0 victory of Kurhuleni Happy Fighters over Phadziri FC in their Kurhuleni Soccer Challenge Tournament match at the Kurhuleni grounds on Saturday was not a true reflection of the game, as Phadziri missed numerous scoring chances. Phadziri squandered two obvious scoring chances in quick succession. The volley of their left flank, Miyelani Khosa, hit the woodwork and the ball landed outside the field of play for a goal kick. Godfrey Marageni had his chance in the 19th minute, but his ground cutter went inches wide. Happy Fighters recuperated and took the game
to their opponents soon afterwards. Their efforts did not pass without reward as they were awarded a penalty in the 29th minute. Hlawutani Rikhotso was brought down within the box and the referee was quick to point at the white spot. Iris “Dario” Maphophe made no mistake with the penalty. The score was 1-0 at the end of the first half. Phadziri were the first to introduce new faces. They replaced Rendani Munyai and Sbusiso Mcunu with Rendani Tshishonga and Mboweni Malwela respectively. Happy Fighters effected two changes to their starting lineup later in the last half. They replaced Tendani Magoda and Matimba Mashele with Mkateko Maphophe and Jacky Ndlovu respectively. Jacky Ndlovu’s first touch of the ball gave rise to his side’s second goal. He deflected the ball into the net, following a long-range volley by Mpho Mmeke.

Hozana Citizens aim for elite league The newly formed football club, Hozana Citizens FC, will be campaigning in the Premier Soccer League in five years' time. That is if the words of the team’s general manager, Mr Simon Mavikane, are anything to go by. According to Mavikane, the club was formed two months ago. Realizing that it would take them much longer to gain promotion to the country’s elite division if they started to play in the local football association, the management decided to buy the SAB League status from Phaphazela Bayern Munich. According to Mavikane, the price of the franchise of the team included all the players. They beefed up the squad which they
purchased from Bayern Munich with a number of talented players from their home village, Shihosana. He added that they had drawn up a five-year plan, at the end of which they wanted to see the team campaigning in the Premier Soccer League or the National First Division at least. He mentioned that they had already played 16 rehearsal matches during the past months as part of their preparations for the league matches. Of the 16 matches they had played, they won 14, drew one and lost one. What makes Mr Mavikane feel that they had assembled a formidable squad is the fact that two of the teams they had beaten, Giyani Hotspurs and Bilika All
Stars, are affiliates of the Safa second division. Mavikane said that they were still searching for a dedicated sponsor. The management currently comprises three members: Dr Rhulani Shiburi (executive chairman), Mr Simon Mavikane (general manager) and the organizer, Mr Steven Ndhambi. They will utilize the Shihosana grounds and the Malamulele Stadium as their home grounds. According to Mr Mavikane, some of the players on whom they will pin their hopes when the league activities commence in three weeks' time include Bob Maluleke and Mayambela Hlungwane (midfielders), Dalton Mavikane (right back) and the keeper, Colly Chauke.

New colours for Mutsha Atlantis Stars SAB League affiliates Mutsha Atlantis Stars have every reason to smile as they now have new uniforms. As a way to congratulate the team on gaining promotion to the higher division, a local medical practitioner, Dr Rendani Netshimboni, decided to sponsor the team. He launched the sponsorship during a ceremony at his home at Hamutsha village last Sunday morning. Netshimboni handed over 15 tracksuits, a complete training kit and 15 pairs of soccer boots to the team’s head coach, Mr Mpho Muthadzwi. Muthadzwi
also received a new cell phone to utilize in the day-to-day running of the team. The value of the sponsorship is R25 000. Netshimboni indicated that the sponsorship was part of his social responsibility to the community and appealed to the relevant authorities to provide sport facilities, saying it was of no use for people to sponsor soccer teams while there were no facilities. Mr Muthadzwi stated that the sponsorship would go a long way in boosting the players’ morale. According to him, the club was established in 2007. The team was campaigning under the
banner of the Makhado Local Football Association since inception and finished their league programme on top of the log last season. Apart from winning the league championship, Atlantis Stars reached the semifinal stage of the Vho-Makhadzi Funerals KO competition last season. As part of their preparations for life in the higher division, Atlantis Stars played a number of friendly matches over the past weeks. Their most recent result was a 4-2 victory over Mutandani Pull Together at the Mutandani grounds two weeks ago.

Apart from their former right flank and team captain, Mongezi Bobe, who Mr Ramunenyiwa said was already in their asset register, Leopards were in the final stages of securing signatures from two top strikers at the time of going to press. The two strikers will replace the team’s top goal scorers of last season, David Zulu and Rendani Ndou, who migrated to Chippa United and Polokwane City respectively last month. Ramunenyiwa dismissed the rumour that their demon midfielder, Edgar Manaka, has left the team, saying the young man was still the club’s property. Tickets for the match are available at Computicket and no ticket will be sold at the stadium. FC Cape Town will host Santos in their Cape Town derby at the NNK Rugby Stadium.
