Six arrested for alleged fuel fraud Court News

The six suspects arrested for allegedly defrauding a wellknown Louis Trichardt-based company out of more than a millions rands’ worth of fuel is to remain behind bars until their next court appearance. The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit arrested the six suspects, aged between 24 and 37, for alleged fraud and theft on Friday. The group were arrested after a sting operation. Two suspects were arrested at a well-known private company in Louis Trichardt. Shortly afterwards, another four suspects were arrested at a petrol station in Siloam. According to Hawks spokesperson Capt Matimba Maluleke, the six suspects were arrested after investigations revealed that between January and October 2018 the six suspects, two drivers and four petrol attendants, had

allegedly connived and unlawfully used the private company’s fuel cards to refuel their own private vehicles and withdraw cash to bribe the attendants in the process. “The investigation revealed that the company lost approximately R1.8 million from the group’s alleged fraudulent activities,” said Maluleke. The six appeared in the Dz-

anani Magistrate’s Court on Monday. They are Zachariah Maumela (37), Mulalo Maida (36), Tshimangadzo Nekhavhambe (33), Phathutshedzo Masindi (31), Thiathu Ratshivhanda (36) and Ridovuona Malusele (24). The six were remanded in custody until Friday, 22 February, for their next court appearance and a formal bail application.

Camp Africa welcomes new managers By Andries van Zyl

Camp Africa received a bit of a facelift in this last year, in cluding a fresh spot of paint, a tiled ablution block, a music system, a little décor revamp (still working on small bits and pieces that require a bit of a ‘female touch’, as it were) and a little maintenance. Owners Dave and Jacqui van Graan have also appointed new camp managers, namely Dean and Carol Pelser, who have already brought fresh, new life into Camp Africa in the three months of their being here. “We are sure that they will bring the camp back to its former glory. Both Dean and Carol have ideas to further liven up Camp Africa,” said Jacqui. Situated in the Hanglip Plantation just outside of Louis Trichardt, Camp Africa’s cosy bush pub, Eagles’ Nest, is fully licensed and keeps the most common types of alcohol. In

winter, a burning fire keeps the bar warm, and in summer, a cool mountain breeze usually brings relief. Camp Africa caters for small birthday parties, conferences and functions. “We are willing to accommodate any request as far as we possibly can. The large boma area holds a ‘kuier-fireplace’, so that the beautiful evenings of this region may be enjoyed. For smaller, more intimate groups, there is a fireplace just outside the bar area,” said Jacqui. Recently introduced at Camp Africa is a ‘pub-lunch’ type menu that includes steak and chips, pie, chips and gravy and Camp Africa pizza. “We just have to note that we are not a restaurant, so do not expect to be served immediately – if you feel like a pizza, please do phone ahead, so that we can start the oven,” said Jacqui. Camp Africa is also a Birdlife SA Birding-Friendly estab-

lishment, so birdwatchers can also enjoy the many birds that are endemic to the area. Other activities that can be enjoyed at and/or from Camp Africa include tree-spotting, mountain biking, 4x4 and 4x2 trails, butterflies and moths (entomology in general), to name but a few. For more information, phone 079 722 0968, or Dean on 079 564 1359 or Carol on 076 226 7552.

“Die Here sal altyd voorsien.

in ‘n persverklaring gesê.

“Ek moet nuwe rims kry vir my waentjie.

Hulle laat my verniet kamp.

Koben’s inspiring story through the camera lens A story of hope

Fifteen-year-old Koben Hofmeyr’s story of spiritual triumph over tragedy has been told in a moving and inspiring photographic and videographic documentary, spearheaded by The Players’ Fund and sponsored by Canon South Africa. The Players’ Fund Project Hero, through which the stories of five rugby heroes are being told, offers hope to former rugby players whose lives have been forever changed by serious injuries on the field. Canon SA provided funding support for the project and has sponsored the camera and video equipment for the filming of these documentaries. The stories are being captured by well-known photographer Nardus Engelbrecht and acclaimed videographer Halden Krog. On 19 May 2018, in Bela-Bela, Koben ran onto the rugby field for his school, Hoërskool Louis Trichardt. He was a popular and respected captain, playing inside centre and identified by those close to him as “always fit and well prepared” and known as “an intelligent player”. In the second half of the match, Koben lined up his opponent for a tackle, as he had done so many times before. On impact, he felt the player’s hip hit his neck, heard a cracking sound and he fell to the ground. He immediately felt pain, pins and needles and realised that he could not stand up.That he was seriously injured and required urgent medical attention became apparent very quickly. Whilst this tragic scenario could be viewed as a nightmare for most, Koben and his family have grown even stronger since this accident and are thankful for what they deem to be blessings from God. His parents are in awe of the progress that Koben has made during his rehabilitation and are grateful for the wonderful support they have received from Koben’s school, their community All the photos of 15-year-old Koben Hofmeyr and that of the wider rugby and friendship circles. When Koben ran onto the field in May last year, accompanying this article was taken by wellknown photographer Nardus Engelbrecht and he did so with a team behind him. Now on his road to recovery, a team approach is also being adopted. supplied on behalf of The Players Fund.

His immediate support base has been joined by the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund, who partners with Koben and his family, as they have done with a further 107 former rugby players in South Africa who are in similar situations. The fund helps rugby players who have been seriously injured by providing support on three levels: Psychological – injured players may be forced out of the game but they are encouraged to remain part of the rugby community. It takes a team to pick up a fallen player, and the fund joins this team. Physical – the fund provides equipment such as wheelchairs, as well as other essentials, to improve the quality of their lives. Emotional – the staff of the fund are just a phone call away, offering strength and encouragement for the injured players and their family as they learn to cope. “We are very proud to be part of this exceptional project, which offers encouragement to rugby players who are struggling to adapt to life after serious injury on the sports field. To see Koben’s story come to life in such beautifully captured images and videos using our equipment is tremendously rewarding. We trust that everyone who watches these stories will draw inspiration from them,” says Dana Eitzen, corporate and marketing communications executive at Canon SA. Canon SA is a proud supporter of South African sport. The company is the title sponsor of the South African Disabled Golf Open and the South African Disabled Golf Association’s First Swing programme, both of which serve to uplift, acknowledge and support South Africans who strive to live beyond their physical limitations and play golf. The other four former rugby players who will feature in The Players’ Fund Project Hero include Charles (Chicco) Oppelt (33 years old from Mamre); Amos Mzimela (46 years old from East London), Henry Afrikaner (39 years old from Durbanville) and Captain Quenton Steele (50 years old from Fish Hoek). All of these former rugby players, spanning all levels of the game, were injured during their sporting careers and will now have an opportunity to share their highest and lowest moments to help raise the spirits of those finding themselves in similar situations. The hope is that through this project the South African public will be able to see their faces, hear their stories and choose the Players’ Fund as their charity of choice in a Rugby World Cup year. Hy was by die goewerneur, Sergius Paulus, wat ‘n verstandige man was. Die Here gaan jou nou straf. Dalk dink u ook so.

Inwoners delf diep in hul sakke

Donasies was weer in oorvloed hier by die oord.

Deurentyd was die personeel so vriendelik, geduldig en behulpsaam.

Foto verskaf.

Locals encouraged to consider tourism related business Tourism

According to local tourism and marketing expert Ms Madembe Muvhulawa, residents should use opportunities presented by the Marula Festival to boost their own businesses. With Louis Trichardt being quite a distance away from the heart of the festival in Phalaborwa this may seem irrelevant to locals, but both Madembe and the Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) say that opportunities exist for the whole region. Figures issued by the LTA state that 30 000 visitors are attracted to the district over the twoweek duration of Marula Festival’s activities and that approximately 10% of these are international guests. While in South Africa, they will tour around more than the Kruger National Park if they are offered reasons to do so. At the launch of the festival, after announcing that the theme for the next five years would be ‘Discover the Wealth of Marula’, the chief executive officer of the LTA, Nomasonto Ndlovu, said that “…it is against this background that we would like to call upon the tourism industry to be creative and come up with appetising packages to be geared for the Marula season influx.” She said that the

festival had inspired different thinking about what the province could do in relation to agritourism and that new celebrations were already being started, such as with mangos and the Magoebaskloof Berry Festival. While tourists are tickled by the sight of tipsy elephants after the animals had harvested their own marulas, they also want to explore other sights, tastes, and experiences. Thinking outside of the box is therefore to be encouraged for entrepreneurs who want to use the resources in and around Louis Trichardt to build their businesses. Madembe is a vocal supporter of local businesses that manage to tap into the multi-million-rand tourist trade. “The Marula Festival keeps growing with each year, bringing tourists from across the country and the SADEC region. As much as it is held in Phalaborwa, travellers take the opportunity to enjoy and discover attractions of the province. It therefore presents opportunities for tourism attractions which can leverage on the festival in creating offerings around the festival to begin with. Last year there was the Marula Golf Draw, which was a great platform for networking with both government and business executives for small businesses. There are also market stalls where our

local business owners can showcase their products and services to the participants of the festival. One of Limpopo’s greatest attractions is that we offer diverse tourism offerings with our different cultures and attractions. Our growth therefore depends on showcasing not only individual lodges and venues but our collective offerings as a province.” As well as being one of only two grading assessors for the entire Vhembe District, together with Thiofhi Ravele, with the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa, Madembe owns and operates Wamadembe Tourism Projects where she does hospitality training, arranges tour packages as well as taking on promotion and consulting projects. Residents considering venturing into the tourist trade in any way are welcome to contact her on 082 760 5646 or Local tourism expert email madembem2@ Ms Madembe Muvhu lawa.

Louis Trichardt Rotary celebrates 60th birthday The Louis Trichardt Rotary Club achieved a milestone on Tuesday when they celebrated their 60th birthday. Inlas: Sy unieke skub-patroon maak hom maklik uitkenbaar. Foto’s verskaf.

A popular landmark in Louis Trichardt for almost 50 years is soon to be demolished. Fortunately, this will only be temporary as a brand new and ultra-modern fuel station will be erected on the same spot. The new filling station will not only boast more space for more cars and even trucks, but it will host a 24-hour convenience

store, ideal for the late-night grocery shopper. Bridge Service Station has become synonymous with the entry into town via Rissik Street. Throughout the past almost five decades, millions of vehicles filled up here with fuel. The service station also played host to a number of different car dealerships, with brands such as Chrysler, Citroën, Mazda, Peugeot, Mazda and Ford.

When Johan Gilfillan and his wife, André, arrived in Louis Trichardt in 1971, they probably never realised how big an impact they would have on the region. Johan, a dealership manager in Maraisburg, Johannesburg, prior to his arrival here, was looking for a business of his own. Bridge Service Station came up for sale and, with the financial assistance of some family members, they grabbed the opportunity with

both hands. For a small period, right at the start, Bridge sold Toyota vehicles. In 1972, the switch was made to Chrysler, and models such as the Valiant started appearing on the showroom floor. In 1976, two major motor companies, Illings and Chrysler SA, merged to form the Sigma Motor Corporation. Brands such as Mazda and Mitsubishi were added to the range. Sigma Motors also had local manufacturing plants for cars such as the trustworthy Peugeots. Other names that appeared locally were the modern Colt vehicles and the ultra-luxurious Citroëns. The older residents in town may remember that, at one stage, Bridge Service Station also hosted a range of caravans. Sprite caravans could be ordered from here and even the more luxurious Wilk caravans were on sale. In 1985, Sigma merged with Ford SA to create the South African Motor Corporation, known as Samcor. This

development meant that Bridge Motors could offer Ford’s products to their clients. Since the town already had a Ford dealership (Van Rooyen Ford), the two dealerships discussed the options, and Bridge Motors decided to buy Jannie van Rooyen’s business. In 2013, yet another car manufacturer’s sign found its way to Bridge when the Kia dealership was acquired. This meant, however, that space was becoming a problem. At that stage, the Fords and Mazdas were already competing for showroom space. A new building was erected on the corner of Rissik and Grobler Street and Kia motors moved there for a while. When Mazda parted ways with the Ford brand internationally in 2014, the display areas once again became problematic. A year later, in 2015, Bridge Auto bought vacant land from the municipality next to the N1, adjacent to the cricket field. Shortly afterwards, construction started on a new showroom for the Kia vehicles as well as a new home for Ford. When the Kia brand moved to the new building next to the N1 in 2017, Mazda moved to the building on the corner of Rissik and Grobler Street. Several setbacks were experienced in the construction work at the new Ford buildings, but early in 2019 the Ford brand could also move their inventory. In 2017, the Bridge Auto group

was sold to Unitrans Automotive, one of the largest automotive dealer networks in South Africa. The sale meant that the three dealerships joined a group with 110 branches countrywide. It was “business as usual”, because the transaction did not affect the management of the dealerships. As far as the old Bridge Service Station is concerned, these developments have allowed the owners to renovate it completely and build something new that is geared for the future. According to Rampie Gilfillan, general manager of Bridge Auto, the building will be demolished and the service station will be closed for an estimated three months. He apologised to clients for the inconvenience, but promised that the new setup will be much more user friendly and will offer fast and convenient services. The new driveway will be much bigger and will cater for light vehicles on one side and trucks on the other. The driveway for cars will boast six islands, with easy entrances. Ample parking will be available, especially for those who want to use the convenience store. The convenience store will be a Pick n Pay Express store, while a Wild Bean Café will offer coffee and a wide range of freshly baked sweet and savoury snacks. He invited people with suggestions or complaints to contact him or André Gilfillan directly at (015) 516 2311.
