Police arrest sixth escaped prisoner Crime

The police have re-arrested a sixth prisoner who managed to escape from the Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Centre in Louis Trichardt in 2017. Seven highly dangerous prisoners managed to escape from custody on the evening of 27 October last year amidst protest action by prison wardens, which escalated into a full-blown prison riot. Limpopo provincial police spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed on Tuesday that a sixth escapee, the 34-year-old Phathutshedzo Nemadodzi, was re-arrested

during an intelligence-led joint operation during the early hours of that morning. Nemadodzi was in prison for murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. Ngoepe said that Nemadodzi, from Dididi village outside Thohoyandou, had been apprehended while hiding at his home. Nemadodzi’s arrest brings to six the total number of the escapees who have been re-arrested up to now. The other five escapees who were re-arrested earlier are Chris Faku (37), Jabulani Isaac Mahlangu (32) from Pretoria, Ntshengedzeni Manukha (26) from Thohoyandou, Ntshavheni Thomas Munyai (30) from Riverside

and Justice Makamo (28) from Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, the police are still searching for the seventh escapee, the 30-year-old Raphaelj Nyota from Harare in Zimbabwe. At the time of his escape, he was also serving a sentence for murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. Ngoepe urged the public to help track down Nyota. Anyone with information that can lead to his re-arrest can contact Colonel Nyelisani Mabatha at 082 565 8171, the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111, the Crime Line SMS at 32211 or their nearest police station.

Jaco Grobbelaar, in ‘n persverklaring gesê.

The MEC for Social Development, Ms Mapula Mokaba Phukwana, officially launched Child Protection Week at the Lwamondo Lutheran Church in Tshifulanani a fortnight ago. According to her, the main aim of Child Protection Week is to raise awareness about the critical needs of children, to mobilise all sectors of society and communities towards comprehensive development, caring and protection of the children. She added that Child Protection Week had become an annual campaign to educate and mobilise communities to put children’s interests first.

For example, Council budgeted A tar road to Bungeni R1,5 million to replace the mayoral vehicle, but no Council hopes to upgrade various roads in the district from gravel to tar in the next year. The road between Chavani and Bungeni is the most expensive project, costing an expected R18 million. To provide a tarred access road to Valdezia will cost an estimated R15 million. R15 million has also been set aside to tar the road from Piesanghoek to Khunda. Other roads to be upgraded include the Sereni Themba to Mashamba Post Office road (R2,3 million), the Tshikwarani/Manavhela access road (R1,8 million) and the Tshedza to Vuvha access road (R1,1 million). Phase 2 of the road from Mbhokota to Mphagi will be upgraded (R5 million) and the second phase of the Mudimeli bridge and access road is expected to cost R3,3 million. Funding to upgrade the roads will come from the Municipal Infrastructure Grant. money has been set aside to buy mayoral cars for the following two years. A further R8 million has been set aside for this year to replace municipal vehicles, whereas in 2019/20 and 2020/2021, only R4 million per year is budgeted for this purpose. The budget makes provision for three sources of income, namely own income, the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) and the Integrated National Electrification Programme (INEP). Council expect to earn R78,93 million from own resources. This would mostly be the profit made from providing electricity and other services to consumers. The MIG allocation is R87,73 million, and R16,91 million is budgeted for INEP grants. Upgrade of IT systems Close to R5 million had been budgeted to upgrade the municipality’s IT infrastructure. The upgrade includes numerous aspects, such as purchasing new software and extending Internet connectivity at service points. Council set R500 000 aside to upgrade the VOIP telephone system and a further R1 million for two Disaster Recovery Plan projects. Even the councillors will have to “modernise” as R290 000 had been budgeted for phase two of the electronic distribution of agendas. This is to be expected, however, as the purchasing of electrical equipment such as transformers and ring units is a

Trichardt will also get a boost. An additional cell will be constructed at an estimated cost of R3,5 million. Residents who have loved ones buried in the Makhado Municipal Cemetery will be delighted to hear that Council budgeted R2 million to erect a fence around the cemetery. R3 million has been set aside in the budget for a market revitalization project at Erf 210, Burger Street. This is the market adjacent to the Shoprite centre. New Council Chamber A new Council chamber and offices are in the pipeline and R700 000 was set aside for this purpose in the next year. This money will be used for the planning stage, and in the following two years Council expects to spend R8 million on this project. Under the “Building Maintenance” item, a few other projects stand out, including R600 000 budgeted for the renovation of the Vleifontein hall and fence. R500 000 has also been earmarked for the planning stage of a recreational facility at the N1 park next to the tourism kiosk. More money into swimming pool The municipal swimming pool will hopefully be operational again this year. The pool has not been in use for many years and hundreds of thousands of rands have been wasted in efforts to repair the facility. Council has now budgeted for another R1,1 million to have the pool repaired. R500 000 has been budgeted to develop the Dzanani Park and R1 million has been earmarked to implement a management system for the cemetery. As far as waste management is concerned, Council allocated R500 000 to rehabilitate the old landfill site. R500 000 has also been set aside to develop a carport and vehicle washing bay at the new landfill site. Council budgeted R700 000 to refurbish the Waterval Traffic Station. This includes paving the area, installing an alarm system and equipping the station with a standby power generator. Tshakhuma Fruit Market Under the Local Economic Development category, several projects will receive a capital injection in the next year. The Tshakhuma Fruit Market will see a R2,4 million development, while the Dzanani Traders Market will receive R500 000. R300 000 has been set aside to design an N1 Tourism Park. This will make provision for an arts and craft centre. In the following two years, Council hopes to spend R8 million to improve these facilities and, by doing so, promote tourism. The budget also mentions R7,5 million that has been earmarked for the re-allocation of the stadium. It does not, however, specify where the stadium is.

Search is on for SA’s top boerewors Competition

The 2018 Championship Boerewors competition has started, and with a new competition structure in place, is now even more accessible for those with a special recipe for traditional boerewors up their sleeves. Boerewors enthusiasts who believe that their recipe has what it takes are invited to enter before Friday, 29 June 2018, to stand a chance of being crowned the 2018 champion. The culinary experts at the South African Chefs Association (SACA) will once again oversee the judging process. All entries will go through a validation process to ensure that recipes adhere to the guidelines for making truly traditional boerewors. Once validated, paper judging will commence, and the Top 30 recipes

will be selected. During a rigorous judging and tasting process, the Top 10 recipes will be selected. These finalists will be required to showcase their boerewors-making skills at the finale on Wednesday, 29 August, before the winner of the 2018 Championship Boerewors competition will be revealed. Prizes are up for grabs from sponsors Coca-Cola, Wellington’s and Toyota, with the grand prize being a Toyota Hilux DC 2.8 GD-6 Raider worth over R516 000. Shoprite and Checkers are proud of the country’s boerewors tradition and celebrate it by hosting the annual Championship Boerewors competition. the course includes all meals, accommodation and course material. “Our aim is not to make money from the training day. We merely cover costs. All are welcome, irrespective of their age. We are also more than willing to adjust course fees, depending on the group of people attending,” said Tersia. To find out more about the next course, Tersia invited members of the public to contact her or any of the Rhino Connect staff members listed below. “For more information about where the course will be presented and fees, please phone or write to us. As we normally try and host the course on a rhino farm, we do not want to advertise such details,” said Tersia. For more information, contact Tersia at 083 759 1608 (tersia@rhinoconnect.co.za), Sya at 082 332 9512 (sya@rhinoconnect.co.za), Jana at 083 272 7334 (jana@rhinoconnect.co.za) or Mariska at 083 294 2994. Alternatively, visit www.rhinoconnect. co.za or their Facebook page, Rhino Connect.

Showing your support for rhino conservation and getting actively involved have never been easier. Rhino Connect, a registered NPO, has invited members of the public to become actively involved with the protection of South Africa’s diminishing rhino population. The organisation has been in operation for the past two years, mainly in the Vivo area, with great success. “Rhino Connect focusses on the protection and conservation of rhinos within the private sector in South Africa. The organisation has forged close relationships over the years with private-owned wildlife conservations, protecting a wide range of animals, the majority of them listed as endangered or vulnerable,” said Rhino Connect founder and director Tersia Jooste. At present, South Africa is custodian of approximately 19 000 white rhinos, with approximately 20% of this number in private ownership. “There is a huge decline in rhino figures since 2008, with state-owned and national parks losing the most rhino per annum, mostly due to poaching, compared to privately owned rhino,” said Tersia. For this reason, said Tersia, their focus is on the private rhino owner. “The private sector invests enormous amounts in the protection and breeding of rhino, which amounts to almost 7 000 rhinos on private reserves, which at the end will prove to save the species for generations to come. The cost of protecting small populations of rhinos is colossal and, in some cases, can discourage landowners from having rhinos on their land,” said Tersia. This is where Rhino Connect aims to make a difference by providing support to private rhino owners through volunteer programmes, whereby the public can play an active role in the protection of rhino, especially during the full-moon periods when poachers are most active. To this end, Rhino Connect frequently hosts training courses that are open to the general public. These training courses, among others, include a course in tracking spoor, tactical shooting and an observation course. The next such training day will take place on 24 August. “One of our main and most successful focus areas is involving members of the public in rhino conservation efforts,” said Tersia. She added that their training days, normally scheduled from a Rhino Connect founder and director Ms Tersia Friday to a Sunday, are extremely popular, with Jooste, pictured next to a young rhino calf whole families sometimes attending. Motorist upset after his Jaguar ends up in hole By Kaizer Nengovhela

fact that visibility is low when there is mist in the mornings makes it so much more important to drive cautiously, Bobodi said. Bobodi invited Netshifhefhe to contact the municipality and bring along the quote to fix the vehicle, along with details of any insurance claims in this regard. The option of referring it to the relevant insurers can then be discussed.

A local resident, Mr Glen Netshifhefhe, is very upset with the Makhado Municipality and he wants to hold the Council responsible for the damage inflicted on his luxury car. Netshifhefhe drove into a large hole next to Anderson Street last Thursday and his Jaguar was extensively damaged. Netshifhefhe explained this week that it was misty when he drove along Anderson Street. He said that street lights were also not working, making the area even darker. While driving along, he suddenly heard a crashing sound and then he ended up next to a tree. He realised afterwards that he had hit a huge hole that had been left open by municipal workers. He is very grateful for having survived the incident, but reckons that more should have been done to safeguard the area and indicate the danger. Netshifhefhe complained that no warning signs had been erected and that the open hole posed a danger to motorists and pedestrians. He now plans on suing the municipality and making them pay for the damage to his vehicle. The spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, explained that workers from the municipality were busy fixing water pipes next to the street and had to dig the hole to get to the pipes. According to the information he had received, the necessary road signs had been put up to warn motorists of the danger. Bobodi said that Mr Netshifhefhe had gone to the municipality to report the incident and he had allegedly admitted that he had been driving at A municipal worker climbs into the hole next to a high speed when the car had hit the hole. Op Dinsdag, 19 Junie, het ‘n feestelike at mosfeer geheers by Levubu Laerskool. Fo to’s verskaf.

BUSINESS talk New physiotherapist practice for town By Andries van Zyl

Louis Trichardt has a new physiotherapist in its midst by name of Lauren Jansen. Lauren graduated in 2010 from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) with a BSc degree in physiotherapy. “I completed my community service year in the military at Health Centre West Coast at Air Force Base Langebaanweg. I was then offered a permanent position in the South African Military Health Services (SAMHS) where I worked until April 2016 as Head of the Department in a general out-patient practice

Lauren Jansen recently opened a new phy siotherapy practice in Louis Trichardt.

at Health Centre West Coast on Air Force Base Langebaanweg, where I met my husband,” said Lauren. Lauren said she had always had a keen interest in completing further studies in orthopaedics and hence she completed her MSc degree in orthopaedic manipulative therapy (OMT) from 2012 to 2014 at Stellenbosch University. In addition, she also completed courses in dry needling, pilates matwork, therapeutic neuroscience education and basic life support and hopes to still complete further studies in sport, ICU, orthopaedics and hydrotherapy. “Through 2014 to 2018, I worked part time for a practice in Constantiaberg Medi-Clinic, seeing primarily ICU, chest and acute rehabilitative work, as well as at other private out-patient practices, seeing primarly sports injuries and orthopaedic related conditions,” said Lauren. Lauren Jansen Physiotherapy opened in May 2016 in Langebaan, where she and her husband lived until her husband’s transfer to Air Force Base Makhado in March/April this year. Lauren said that throughout the years, she had volunteered to help sports teams with preventative programs, specific conditioning, fitness and agility, as well as general physiotherapy work with charity teams and organisations. “I believe in a holistic approach and always make use of treatment techniques that have been thoroughly researched and proven effective. I have a passion for the work I do and strongly believe that it shows,” said Lauren. Lauren’s practice is situated at the Prognos Medical Centre, sharing an office with dentist Dr Azim Ayob.

Vir meer inligting, skakel Karen by tel. 071 672 1545 of besoek hul Facebook-blad, Die Koffie Pot.

Louis Trichardt joins list of Parkrun venues Health & Fitness

Louis Trichardt will soon join a group of towns and cities from across the world to buy into the unique “Parkrun” initiative. The concept of parkruns is simple: You turn up every Saturday and run 5km, or if you’re a junior, then 2km every Sunday. It doesn’t matter how fast you go and it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing. What matters is taking part. As from September, Louis Trichardt will also host parkrun events each Saturday and Sunday like in countries all around the world. Each event is based in a unique location such as a park, beach or promenade, and all events are organised by a group of our wonderful, dedicated volunteers. In Louis Trichardt’s case, one of these volunteers is Jaco Voigt. In May this year, he officially got permission from the Makhado Municipality to host these weekly park runs in the tree sanctuary between Stubbs and Songozwi Street, next to the N1.

The first ever park run was in Bushy Park, Teddington, United Kingdom, when 13 intrepid parkrunners got together on 2 October 2004. The volunteer team included Paul and Joanne Sinton-Hewitt, Duncan Gaskell, Simon Hedger and Robin Drummond. It took nearly two years before parkruns spread beyond Bushy Park. Wimbledon was the chosen venue and they had to prove to themselves that they could manage more than a single event at a time. This was the start of the ‘cookie cutter’ approach to events that would allow parkrun to expand. To begin with, they collated all results on paper and the finish tokens were washers from the local hardware store! But eventually they ramped up the technology, and so the parkrun registration and barcode result system was born. Now, many thousands of runners are processed, websites updated and emails sent each week. The parkrun community is growing all the time – but it’s all still based on the simple, basic principles

formed from the start: weekly, free, 5km, for everyone, forever. Parkruns are all about inclusiveness and well-being. Organisers want as many people as possible to feel part of a real local community, brought together by parkrun events, as well as the global parkrun family. To date, 18 240 parkrun events have been hosted at 145 locations. The average kilometres covered at each event is 299.7 and the average runtime is 40 minutes and 45 seconds. At present, the female record holder is Jenna Challenor, who completed the 5km run in 16 minutes and 35 seconds in August 2013, while Amos Nyongo is the male record holder, completing the distance in 14 minutes and two seconds in June 2018. In total, 542 955 runners from across the world compete in the parkruns, representing 1 882 clubs. In Limpopo, the only other parkruns are hosted in Polokwane, Leeupoort and Mogol. For more information about Louis Trichardt’s own parkrun, phone Jaco at Tel 084 616 2299.
