Natuurliefhebbers moes Woensdag magteloos toekyk hoe een van Louis Trichardt se unieke landmerke, die groot kremetartboom op die hoek van Noordwes en Jeppestraat, met byl en kettingsaag gevel word. die boom afkap en of hy die nodige permit gehad het om dit wel te doen? Foto’s van die verminkte kremetart is ook op Facebook versprei. “Kan iemand dit nie stop nie?!” wou inwoners weet. Iemand het toe die spreekwoordelike slagting gestop. Dié iemand was die plaaslike kantoor van die Departement van Omgewingsake. Kort nadat die Zoutpansberger verlede week van die voorval ingelig is, is Omgewingsake daarvan in kennis gestel. Die Departement van Omgewingsake het dadelik gereageer en die toneel besoek. Aanvanklik was die persoon wat besig was om die boom af te kap baie arrogant en geensins van voorneme om met sy aktiwiteite te stop nie. Dit was blykbaar eers nadat hy herhaaldelik met wetgewing en ‘n boete gedreig is, dat hy van sy planne afgesien het en die boom met rus gelaat het. Die Departement van Omgewingsake het Dinsdag gesê dat hulle die proses gestaak het en dat hulle ECE-kantoor (Environmental Compliance Enforcement) in Thohoyandou ‘n ondersoek geloods het om te bepaal of die eienaar van die erf wel oor ‘n wettige permit beskik het om die boom te verwyder. ‘n Permit kan wel bekom word indien ‘n boom, selfs ‘n beskermde boom soos ‘n kremetart, in die pad staan van bou- of konstruksiewerk. Die departement het egter daarop gewys dat die vernietiging van ‘n kremetart altyd die laaste opsie moet wees. Hulle het verduidelik dat daar aansoek gedoen kon word om die boom na ‘n nuwe tuiste te verskuif of die boom kon selfs aan ‘n natuurliefhebber verkoop word. Die lank en die kort daarvan is egter steeds dat ‘n permit benodig word voordat daar aan ‘n kremetart geraak kan word, selfs al is dit net om een tak af te sny. Natuurliefhebbers was aanvanklik verheug om te hoor dat Omgewingsake die proses kon stop. Does Limpopo really have the lowest unemployment rate in the country, standing at 16,5%? This was proclaimed by Premier Chupu Mathabatha during his State of the Province Address last month. Premier Mathabatha quoted from a Stats South Africa report, indicating that the provincial economy has been able to create 317 000 jobs since 2014. “Our unemployment rate is currently 16,5% against the national average of 27,1%” said the premier. The statistics provided caused a number of eyebrows to lift, with many arguing that this is little more than a pre-election stunt, with a very selective use of statistics. As the quote (from presumably British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli) goes: “Lies, damn lies, and statistics.” We pulled up the latest Stats SA labour force

Die Louis Trichardt Dierebeskermingsvereniging (DBV) het hulself tot die hof gewend en hoop vir die suksesvolle vervolging van ‘n Louis Trichardt inwoner wat volgens hulle homself skuldig gemaak het aan ernstige dieremishandeling. Die 62-jarige man het verlede week in die hof op Louis Trichardt verskyn ingevolge die Dierebeskermingswet, Wet 71 van 1962. Hy is nie gevra om te pleit nie en sy saak is uitgestel tot 5 April. Die klagte teen die man hou verband met die “onmenslike” vervoer van tientalle skape op ‘n oop bakkie van Pretoria tot in Louis Trichardt. Die voorval het op 12 Desember 2018 plaasgevind. Die Louis Trichardt DBV se inspekteur Lawrence Khodobo het in ‘n beëdigde verklaring gesê dat hy die betrokke dag via die Limpopo SPCA se WhatsApp-groep ingelig is van iemand wat met ‘n oorlaaide vrag skape op ‘n bakkie vanaf Pretoria na Louis Trichardt op pad was. “Sommige van die skape se koppe en bene het oor die kant van die bakkie deur die reëlings uitgehang. Two arrested at border over explosives Court News

The South African Police Service in Musina has arrested another two suspects aged between 25 and 30 at the Beit Bridge border post for the possession of explosives that are comprised of connector cap fuses and cables. According to provincial police spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the police were conducting their routine search and patrol operations at the border post when they noticed two Police confiscated explosives to the suspicious men carrying big value of about R250 000. “The men were stopped, searched and found in possession of connector cap fuses and 900 units of [explosive] cabling to the estimated value of R250 000. The origin and destination of these explosives is still being determined by ongoing police investigations,” said Ngoepe. Further police investigations revealed that one of the suspects had also contravened the Illegal Immigration Act by being in the country illegally. Both men appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court and their case was postponed until 22 March for further police investigation.

oe gereeld bid ons elke dag? Wanneer ons opstaan, by elke ete, voordat ons gaan slaap? Hoe lyk hierdie gebede van ons? In Efesiërs 1:15-23 sien ons dat Paulus ‘n dankgebed bid. Dit is opmerklik dat Paulus gereeld in sy briewe vir die gemeente bid. Paulus dank God hier vir die gelowiges. Hy klop die gemeente nie op die skouer nie, hy wys dat alles genade van God is. Verder bid hy dat die gelowiges drie dinge sal ontvang: 1) Wysheid 2) Openbaring dat hulle God kan ken 3) Insig, sodat hulle hul roeping kan raaksien. Om God te ken beteken dat daar ‘n verhouding met God moet wees. Al hoe mens daardie verhouding met God kan kry, is deur sy Woord daagliks deeglik te ondersoek en te bestudeer. Sodoende kom ons ook onder die besef van Christus se triomfantelike regering. Hy is die een wat in beheer is en daar is niks wat ons van die liefde van God kan skei nie, selfs nie eers Satan nie (Rom. 8:37-39). Ons hoef dus niks te vrees nie. Christus is self ook die hoof van die liggaam wat God gemaak het. Hy is dus die Hoof van die kerk. Paulus gebruik gereeld die beeld van die liggaam. Hierdie beeld leer vir ons dat die kerk ‘n eenheid vorm. Omdat Christus, die Hoof, ten volle in beheer is, kan ons en moet ons sonder vrees deur die lewe gaan en saam werk as liggaam om sy koninkryk te laat kom. En wanneer Hy ons in hierdie werk seën, moet ons Hom daarvoor dank en weet dat God waarlik regeer. Ds. Laerskool Louis Trichardt het met hartseer afskeid geneem van een van hul geliefde onderwysers, me. Petro de Wet. Petro het verlede Vrydag haar laaste skooldag gewerk en sodoende ‘n hoofstuk van 38 jaar in die onderwys afgesluit. Vir 25 van hierdie jare het sy by Triegies skoolgehou vir al die grade, van Graad 1 tot Graad 7.

Petro het haar loopbaan as onderwyseres in 1981 by Laerskool Willem Cruywagen in Alberton begin. Daar het sy onder andere skoolgehou saam met me. Maggel Bezuidenhout, mnr. John Whiteley en mnr Coenie de Lange, wat almal ook later na Louis Trichardt verhuis het. In 1985 het sy by Noordskool en later ook Westenburg Sekondêr in Polokwane begin skoolhou, waarna Laerskool Louis Trichardt in 1994 so

gelukkig was om haar tot hul span by te voeg. In 2006 is sy tot Departementshoof bevorder - ‘n taak wat sy met besondere deernis en onderskeiding uitgevoer het. “Ons beste wense vergesel haar op haar lewenspad vorentoe. Ons gaan jou mis, juf. MC Mining to start with Phase 1 of Makhado Lite Mining News

MC Mining have announced that they will start developing their flagship Makhado hard-coking and thermal-coal project just north of the Soutpansberg in phases. According to a press release issued by the mining company, construction on Phase 1 will commence during the third quarter of this year if all conditions are satisfied. These conditions include finalizing a thermal off-take agreement by the second quarter of 2019, finalizing debt funding to the amount of US$20 million and raising enough equity to repay the Industrial Development Corporation of South-Africa (IDC) and to contribute to Phase 1 funding, totalling US$ 30 million. MC Mining effectively owns 69% of Baobab Mining & Exploration (Pty) Ltd, the owner of the Makhado Project, the balance being and/or to be held by the IDC, seven communities located in the vicinity of Makhado and a black industrialist. MC Mining previously announced the Makhado “Lite” project plan, producing 4 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of run-off-mine (ROM) coal, yielding 1.6 to 1.8 Mtpa of saleable product. The development of Makhado Lite was, however, delayed for approximately a year mainly because of the lack of access to two key properties (the farms Lukin and Salaita) were the east pit, processing and other infrastructure would be located. These properties have since been bought by the company. The delay, however, resulted in the company’s having to repay their existing IDC debt ahead of significant cashflows out of Makhado. “Consequently, in parallel with pursuing various strategies to obtain access to the two properties, management assessed alternative project-development plans, which included developing Makhado in phases by commencing mining on the west pit and processing through the existing Vele plant (Phase 1) and then progressing to the east pit (Phase 2),” said the company. According to MC Mining, construction at Makhado and Vele will occur at the same time and will take nine months to complete, requiring funding of R460 million, including a 10% design

contingency. “Phase 1 mining and processing will be outsourced to experienced third parties who have operated in South Africa and is expected to create approximately 650 permanent employment opportunities,” said the company. Once up and running, MC Mining said, Phase 1 will generate significant cash flows. “The approval for the phased development reflects further advancement of Makhado and its ability to generate significant near-term value by positioning MC Mining to be able to take advantage of positive future global coking coal prices due to limited supply. The use of the existing Vele processing plant reduces the project’s capital expenditure requirements and, together with the completed FEED process, shortens the construction time while moderating execution risk,” said MC Mining CEO David Brown. He added that they remained committed to the sustainable development of the Makhado Project, “recognising its potential to drive significant socio-economic transformation and seeking co-operation between mining, agriculture and heritage land uses”.

Three to remain behind bars over elephant tusks Court News

Three Zimbabwean nationals will have to spend the next couple of months behind bars awaiting their next court appearance in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court. The three, Keswane Simango (28), Florence Baloyi (35) and Phillemon Baloyi, appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of being involved in a restricted activity regarding a threatened or protected species without a permit. To make matter worse for them, they are also being charged under the Immigration Act for being in South Africa illegally. Keswane and Florence were arrested by police on Friday, 15 March, along the R524 road between Louis Trichardt and Thohoyandou at the Piesanghoek turn-off. Their arrest follows a tip-off from the public that they were in possession of two elephant tusks. “A special intelligence-driven joint operation composed of the Makhado Cluster Task Team, the detectives, the Crime Intelligence Unit and the Stock Theft Unit was activated and conducted in the area, which led to the arrest of two female suspects found in possession of elephant tusks. The tusks were concealed in a black sports bag,” said provincial police spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe. Following further police investigation, Phillemon was arrested later on Friday. During the three accused’s court appearance, their case was postponed until 20 June this year. They were remanded in custody to afford the court opportunity to determine the authenticity of the tusks (meaning that they are not fake) and also for the police to determine whether the three are indeed in South Africa illegally as they could produce no documentation.

As if the embattled Vhembe District Municipality does not have enough problems, the municipality’s website has become the target of hackers. Last Friday, the site was unavailable for part of the morning, with the message “Hacked by Semtex – Kill or be killed” displayed across the screen. The past week, Google’s Chrome browser flagged the site as a possible phishing site. When the VDM’s spokesperson, Moses Shivambu, was approached for comment, he did not elaborate on the cause of the problems. He said that they were aware of the website issue and were busy fixing the corrupt file. He assured residents that none of their other systems were attached to the website. The fact that the website is vulnerable means that residents should be careful when accessing forms. Earlier this week, Google’s Chrome browser issued a security warning to users visiting the site. It stated that “Google Safe Browsing recently detected phishing on www.vhembe.gov.za. Phishing sites pretend to be other websites to trick you.”

The hacker or hackers seemingly exploited some security vulnerabilities and infiltrated the VDM’s website, which makes use of a “building” platform called Drupal. Such platforms are very vulnerable to attacks if not updated regularly. Friday’s hacker seemed to have used a security loophole and replaced the home page with his or her own page, displaying the Semtex message. Semtex is described as “a very pliable, odourless plastic explosive” and is a popular “weapon” in several computer games, where it forms part of the player’s armour. It may have been a subtle message to tell the site owners that the hacker has planted a “bomb” on the site which could “explode” at any time. Whereas the “Semtex” hacker might only have been messing around with the site, the phishing attacks can be more dangerous. Hackers try and trick the website visitors into supplying them with personal details, such as names, ID numbers and addresses. In certain phishing incidents, the scammers try and trick people into supplying banking details as well.

On Wednesday the VDM’s website still displayed the warning, mostly because Google had added the site to its list of “unsafe” sites. The Zoutpansberger contacted a few website experts, asking them to have a look at the site. The general consensus was that the security issues had been addressed, but visitors to the site were warned to be extra careful and to always double-check the address at the top of the browser. This is necessary to ensure that the site you are on is in fact the correct one and not a suspicious-looking address.

Die Kortsnoet Grasslang (Psammophis brevirostris) is hierdie week die onderwerp van die Zoutpansberger se gereelde berig oor slange van die Soutpansberg. “Hierdie dag slang is ‘n baie vinnige slang en word dikwels aangetref in die veld as mense loop. Hulle is nie baie algemeen in die dorp nie, maar word soms in tuine en oop erwe gesien,” het slangkenner en -vanger Jan “Slang” van Rooyen gesê. Volgens Jan word hierdie slange nie baie groot nie en wissel in lengte van omtrent 60 cm tot selfs ‘n meter. “Hierdie agtertand slangetjie is semi-giftig, maar die gif het nie regtig ‘n uitwerking op die mens nie. Die kanse dat hy jou sal pik is skraal, tensy jy die slang gaan probeer optel,” het Jan gesê. Omdat hierdie slange baie vinnig beweeg, het Jan gesê, sal hulle eerder skuiling soek as wat hulle sal rondhang en hoop dat hulle nie gesien word nie. “Die strepe teen die lyf af met ‘n stippellyn teen die ruggraat af maak dit maklik om te identifiseer teenoor die ander slange van die gebied. Hierdie slang maak aktief jag op sy prooi wat akkedissies, klein knaagdiertjies en selfs ander slange insluit,” het Jan gesê. Jan het ‘n beroep gedoen op inwoners op kennis op te bou oor die streek se slange en nie sommer voor die voet slange dood te maak nie. NG Moerdergemeente palm eerste rolballiga in Die Louis Trichardt Rolbaklub se eerste besigheidsliga van die jaar het verlede Donderdag ten einde geloop, met die span van die NG Kerk Moedergemeente wat bo-aan die punteleer geëindig het. Die span het bestaan uit ds. Jan Pretorius, Zagrys Nortjé, Hennie Cordier en Bennie Smith. Hier is hulle afgeneem met hulle trofee en pryse. Die hoofborg van die liga was die Mountain Inn Hotel, wat ‘n R1 000 se geskenkbewyse gegee het. Van links na regs staan ds. Jan, Hennie, Zagrys, Bennie, Kittie de Bruin (president van die Louis Trichardt Rolbalklub) en Dennis Schnehage en Vicky Richardson van Mountain Inn. Die Doppers het tweede geëindig in die liga met KB Struktureel in die derde plek. De Bruin het Dennis en Vicky bedank vir hul borgskap, asook al die spanne wat ingeskryf het en daardeur ook die klub geborg het. Vir volledige uitslae sien onderstaande kolom.

Wie kan help? Charl Fritz, lid van die Bulldogs Veerpyltjieklub op Levubu, is onlangs gekies vir deelname aan die Suid-Afrikaanse Veerpyltjiekampioenskappe wat vanaf 22 tot 29 Junie beslis sal word. Deelname is egter nie gratis nie en elke speler benodig R10 000 om deel te neem. Hierdie week, 25 jaar gelede Dit wil blyk of die streek se behoefte na ‘n tersiëre instansie nog nie verflou het nie. Ongelukkig het die satelietkampus wat die Vaaldriehoekse Technikon op Louis Trichardt beplan het nie gerealiseer nie. 25 jaar later beplan die Universiteit van Venda om dieselfde roete te volg en is die proses al verby die onderhandelingsfase. Daar blyk wel onduidelikheid te wees omtrent die presiese perseel wat vir dié doeleinde deur die Makhado Munisipaliteit afgestaan word aan UNIVEN. Ten spyte van die aanvanklike verwarring, kan ons wel verwag dat ons plaaslike ekonomie in die toekoms ‘n inspuiting gaan kry en baie besighede by die ontwikkeling gaan baat.

CP en Alan byt vas in Cape Epic CP deesdae in Stellenbosch woon, het hy op Louis Trichardt grootgeword en het hy hier ‘n fietsrylegende geword. CP en Alan skuur tans skouers met die wêreld se beste bergfietsryers tydens die Cape Epic, wat beskou word as een van die taaiste bergfietswedrenne ter wêreld. Jaarliks lok dit die room van fietsryers van regoor die wêreld, wat wêreldkampioene soos Nino Schurter van Switzerland insluit. Dit word beslis oor agt dae oor 650 moordende kilometers. Die Cape Epic het Sondag afgeskop met ‘n 21 km roete wat begin en geëindig het by die Universiteit

36ste op die algehele puntelys. Maandag was ‘n moeilike dag vir Alan, wat erg las gehad het van krampe. Selfs ‘n gebreekte wiel en ‘n pap band kon nie Tydens Dinsdag se skof het die Insect Science die Insect Science Pro-span se moed WoensPro-span egter baie gemakliker gery en die 90 km dagoggend breek nie en hulle het teruggeveg vanaf Hermanus tot by Oak Valley Landgoed in om algeheel 33ste te eindig na afloop van die Grabouw in net meer as vier ure voltooi, vir ‘n 30ste derde skof van die moordende Absa Cape Epic plek. Met ‘n pap band en gebreekte wiel, moes hulle voortsukkel tot by die waterpunt waar die tegniese span dit kon herstel. Dit het hulle egter baie tyd gekos. Die Insect Science Pro-span het uiteindelik in die 46ste plek geëindig in bykans vyf-en-‘n-half ure. Die skof het egter sy tol geëis onder talle van die top jaers en heelwat spanne moes onttrek weens beserings en tegniese probleme. Ten spyte van ‘n swakker tyd as waarvoor hulle gehoop het, het hulle algehele posisie opgeskuif na die 33ste plek. CP en Alan is egter nog vol moed vir die skofte wat voorlê. Donderdag se skof is ‘n baie korter 43 km tydtoets wat begin en eindig by Oak Valley Estate. Vrydag durf die spanne ‘n moordende 100 km roete aan wat eindig by die Stellenbosch universiteit. Saterdag vertrek hulle vroeg op ‘n 89 km roete wat weer in Stellenbosch eindig en Sondag eindig die resies met ‘n 70 km roete tot by die eindpunt by die Val de Vie Landgoed in Stellenbosch. Die spanne se vordering kan gevolg word deur die webtuiste te besoek by www.cape-epic.com.
