Mphego royal community shocked by

Desecration of graves By Elmon Tshikhudo Could this be a tornado that had swept over this area or could this be the work of Satanists? Those were the questions asked by members of the community after learning about the destruction of graves at the Mphego Royal burial site. The gravesite resembled a war zone hit by an air strike, with graves flattened and others having the headstones broken to pieces. This was the rude awakening the royal family had on Monday morning. When members of the royal family arrived at the graveside on Monday, they found it in tatters. Four graves belonging to

the royal family were severely damaged, while two had their headstones broken. Damage to the graves is estimated at more than R100 000. The senseless incident has not only shocked the royal family, but the whole community is still asking who might be behind the incident at the sacred place. A suggestion that it could have been grave robbers was rejected, as the vandal(s) only damaged the graves and nothing was stolen in the process. The local traditional leader, Chief Samson Mulatedzi Mphego, said he was at home at the royal palace when a neighbour, who resided next to the sacred royal gravesite, alerted him to the vandalization. - Continues on page 2

Is Gogo ogo Mutangwa the oldest person? Vho-Mutangwa Mukwevho of Vuvha-La Ha-Mulambilu is possibly the oldest person in the world. If not, she is definitely one of the oldest. According to her ID book, she was born on 26 September 1874 and is she nearly 140 years old. ”God gave me life in abundance, plus a bonus. I’m old now, she said. The much-respected elder has eight children but she cannot exactly remember how many grandchildren she has. The Limpopo IEC boss, Ms Nkaro Mateta, visited Mutangwa on 6 May and she cast a special vote at home. Mutangwa said that eating healthy food, hard work and abstaining from alcohol were

some of the secrets of a long life. “I have never tasted alcohol in my life because I know its consequences. I don’t eat too much fatty food and I make sure that I spend much of my time working. I also do not smoke and I pray every day,” she added. She never went to school but can read and write. “Although at times I enjoy indigenous food, I like Coke more than anything else.” Unlike many senior citizens, who suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure and heart diseases, Mutangwa said she was very healthy. “I still eat salt and sugar and that does not give me problems.” Her son and third-born, Mr Petrus Muk-

wevho (77), who lives with his mother, said that she was able to move on her own, but she got dizzy when standing for a long time. Despite her age, Mutangwa cooks and dresses herself and even does the laundry. Local councillor Mr Nehemia Madzhiga said that elders needed to share their knowledge with the young generation to build a link between the present and generations to come. Madzhiga encouraged other elders to engage themselves in writing books, so that their indigenous knowledge should last forever. Photo right: Ms Mutangwa Mukwevho.

Huge pothole allegedly causes three-vehicle-accident Laughter turned into screams of terror when a Phadziri bus full of passengers, travelling from Kutama to Makhado (Louis Trichardt), hit a Toyota Corolla on Monday morning and the Corolla then collided with an oncoming bakkie. Traffic came to a standstill after

the accident. The incident took place when the bus allegedly crashed into the Toyota when the driver of the car stopped to avoid a pothole. It is said that the driver of the car then lost control and crashed into an oncoming bakkie. The Corolla rolled several times

Black Snake bite the United Brothers

Cobra Stars brutally destroy Thohoyandou

Manamani Black Snake booked a place in the next stage of the prestigious MTG Soccer Challenge KO Competition by beating Lwamondo United Brothers 2-1 at the Duthuni Mandalale grounds on Saturday. United Brothers, or Baboon as they are commonly known, committed suicide by leaving the Snakes’ danger man, Dakalo Matombo, unmarked most of the time. He was the thorn in the flesh of the defenders of United Brothers, collecting balls from behind and distributing some to the front runners, while at the same time playing as a striker. Referee Mashudu Netshiluvhi flashed the first yellow card nine minutes into the game. Vuledzani Mulaudzi of United Brothers was booked for a late tackle on Sedzani Ramanugu. In the 19th minute, Black Snake scored their first goal. Dakalo Matombo tried his luck from outside the penalty area with a volley. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced across the goal line. Black Snake continued to dominate after the goal, but they were not lucky enough to increase the margin before the end of the first half. United Brothers strengthened their striking force by introducing Shumani Mashapha for Rendani Makwayi four minutes into the last half. The keeper of United Brothers, Takalani Nethonzhe, denied Black Snake’s strikers numerous sure goals. Khathu Mathuba of Black Snake

That prompted the Stars’ defenders to reduce the playground by moving to the centre line, from where they sent dangerous passes to the strikers. Cobra Stars opened their account in the 18th minute. Khuthadzo Mashau beat the offside trap and sent the keeper the wrong way. Thohoyandou started to play like a united team soon afterwards, but it was only for a few moments. Their efforts gave rise to a goal by Ali Mohamed in the 29th minute. He unleashed a volley from an awkward angle. unleashed a volley from the edge of the box in the 59th minute. Nethonzhe made his presence felt when he stretched to the limit to pull off a brilliant save. Brothers found the equalizer in the 64th minute. Kenny Mukwevho beat the offside trap and blasted in a ground cutter from inside the box. Black Snake snatched the winner six minutes before the final whistle. Thina Ratshilivha gave the ball a final touch after a scramble within the box.

Huge damage was caused when a fire swept through the house of a teacher of Malamu lele. Ms Hilda Chauke, a teacher at Mavuyisa Primary School, is counting her losses after her house went up in flames and almost everything inside was lost. According to estimates, the loss is more than R500 000. “I was coming from church when I found a lot of people watching my house burning,” said Chauke. The identity documents of her five children, books, laptop computers and other items were burnt to ashes. What surprised Chauke is that the fire seemed to have come from the bathroom. “When I went to church, I had switched off the lights and I do not know how the house happened to catch fire,” she said. Alleged church thief in custody

Madiba’s legacy an inspiration to build houses nities became easy victims of crime. He said lack of proper houses in communities also promoted crime as the destitute families were targeted by criminals and community members. One of the beneficiaries is Mr Frans Ramalokwe (56). He is sharing a mud hut with his wife and nine children. They have been staying in this hut for more than 15 years. He says he is excited that

he will have a decent house. SABC Limpopo regional manager Ms Tshamaano Makuya says the SABC has seen many poor people getting access to better housing facilities through the renowned Celebrity Build a House campaign. “As long as there is still a need out there for better living conditions, we will continue with these campaigns - an endeavour we are so passionate about.”

in the area. They tried to trace the electric wires, cement and sound systems which were recently stolen in Tshituni-tsha-Fhasi and the trail eventually led them to the alleged suspect. According to police spokesperson W/O Lazarus Netshidzati, the suspect may be linked to at least six cases of housebreaking and robberies at businesses. He allegedly stole several items from a church in Rabali village. The items include a sound system, shoes and even a Bible. The Mphephu police urged members of the public who were victims of burglaries over the past few months to try and identify items at the police station.

The Nzhelele police are confident that they have nabbed a notorious thief who may very well be responsible for the rise in cases of housebreaking and robbery in the area. The 42-year-old Lifuka Frank Tshivhidzo was arrested after police discovered stolen goods worth R100 000 at his home. He allegedly stole these items from several households and businesses in the Nzhelele area over the past three months. Tshivhidzo briefly appeared in the Dzanani Magistrate court and he was remanded in custody pending further investigations. He was due to appear again on Wednesday (21st). The escalation in crime forced the Mphephu police to go out in full force and conduct thorough investigations

Local comedy film puts crime in the spotlight

Debut album is a dream come true

A group of young people in Malamulele have written, produced and released a local comedy film as a way of socialising and beating the scourge of teenage pregnancies and crime in the area. Despite the low budget of the movie, young director Matimba Gezani (20) penned a script which his 10 actors transformed into passable motion visuals. The interesting aspect about U Ta Khawula is that people in rural areas will automatically relate to the many stories told in this movie. “The most basic aspect of the drama is the role of crime,” says Matimba. “It shows the youth that when you do crime

When he was still a member of the Lutandale Primary School choir between 1987 and 1989, little did a resident of Lufule village, Abashoni Masakona, know that he would become a well-known musician one day. As his love of music grew, Masakona joined the Lufule Zion Old Mission Church Choir in 2010. It was during his stay at the Zion Old Mission Church choir that Masakona started to compile his own songs during his spare time. In 2012 he met the famous local music producer, Mr Amblos Masakona, of the Amblos Recording Studios. After negotiations, an agreement was reached that Abashoni could use Amblos’ instruments at the studio for rehearsal purposes. Although his music was ready for recording last year, Abashoni could not go to the studio due to financial problems. After raising some funds during the year, he started recording his music in November last year. His dream of

you are either bound to end up in jail or get maimed by people who have had enough of crime. We hope that the youth will get a clear and loud message that a journey of crime is not a good journey to travel.” It is quite difficult to pin down one scene from the film and say that it represents the theme or storyline of this work of art and youthful expression. These youths believe that there are good stories to tell about life in rural areas, much like what people in big cities are doing through movies. “For example, viewers of U Ta Khawula can expect to laugh a lot and release the stress of life,” he continues.

“This is only part one of many films to come, but a lot of people are interested in our film,” says Matimba. “Even the elders love our comedy. They motivate us to do part two. We will make it!” The group members are facing a great challenge of training, and shortage of cameras and other setting props. “There are people who also come and disturb us while we are busy shooting.” Another youth, Murun’wa Hlungwane, said: “We have found a way of socialising through participating in acting and doing movies.”

releasing his own album became a reality when his album, Vhana vho dzhenwa ngani, was released three weeks ago. The album consists of eight songs, with the title song already a favourite with local disco music lovers. According to Abashoni, his music is dedicated to all age groups. The CD is available at most of the local music outlets. Abashoni added that he will soon be on the road throughout the district, performing at various ceremonies, including weddings and social gatherings, in a bid to promote the album. He can be booked at 079 4886 433.

Aids victims remembrance day at Hayoma Farm Millions of people who died of Aids-related illnesses around the world were remembered during a recent Aids, sexually transmitted infections and TB awareness campaign held at Hayoma Farm near Aventura Tshipise in the Musina municipal area. The campaign mostly targeted farm workers from Hayoma, Schuitdrift and Alicedale. This was a joint effort

by the Vhembe District Municipality, Musina Local Municipality, Department of Health, Lawyers for Human Rights and the South African Police Services. Cllr Maria Mamedzi of the Vhembe District Municipality said HIV/Aids was one of the biggest challenges facing the community of today. “The burden of care falls on the families and children of those who are ill.

Often they have already lost a breadwinner and the meagre resources they have left are not enough to provide care for the ill person and food for the family.” She said although AIDS had become very common, it was still surrounded by silence. “People are ashamed to speak about being infected and many see it as a scandal when it happens in their families. People living with AIDS are exposed to daily prejudice, born out of ignorance and fear. We cannot tackle this epidemic unless we can break the silence and remove the stigma that surrounds it. As leaders in our communities, we have to provide leadership on how to deal with AIDS.” She said the fight against AIDS had to happen on two main fronts - prevention and care. “To prevent the spread of AIDS, we have to educate people on how to prevent infection. We also have to change the social attitudes that make women vulnerable because they cannot refuse unsafe sex from a partner and the attitudes among men that lead to the abusing and raping of women. Poverty alleviation and development are also important programmes that will limit the spread of AIDS.” Cllr Bigboy Ndou, who is responsible for health services in Musina Municipality, added that AIDS affected millions of South Africans. “This means that we have to make it easier for people to be open, to go for tests and to seek care. We have to treat it Cllrs Maria Mamedzi (Vhembe District Municipality), Bigboy Ndou and as an illness and not a scandal that has to be kept Gift Phiri (both from Musina Municipality) jointly light the candles to secret. Stand up and plant a tree When life throws you lemons, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and plant a lemon tree... Mashudu Phineas Muleya had been working as a gardener for 16 years when he was retrenched and the business he worked for closed its doors. A few weeks later, he founded Unarine Garden Services. As a man of modest means, he did not have the capital to invest in good equipment or to fund the maintenance and repairs of what was fast becoming an unreliable truck. Soon his business started to suffer as a result of hours spent on repairs and technical difficulties, resulting in less time in the garden. Phineas realized he needed help - fast. The answer to his woes lay with the De Beers Venetia Zimele Business Hub, an Anglo-American initiative which stimulates local business and promotes job creation through low-interest business loans to entrepreneurs of small- to medium-sized enterprises. Phineas applied for a loan of about R12 000, which allowed him to purchase brand new equipment, such as lawnmowers and trimmers as well as overalls and safety boots for his staff. He says that while this may seem like a small loan to some, it was the turning point for his business. The

loan amount secured eight jobs, increased his staff compliment to 10 positions and allowed him to expand his business from 26 gardens to 53 gardens in the space of two years. He also increased his revenue by offering a new service in the form of sprinkler installation and repairs. When discussing the office facilities and mentorship on offer, Phineas proudly points out that the De Beers Zimele Venetia Business Hub had made him a better businessman. His business was built on the principle of exceptional customer relations and efficiency. Business Hub manager Tantaswa Jozana calls Phineas a quick study. By teaching Phineas the basics of financial management and by applying record-keeping and business administration to his business, he has enjoyed amazing results. Phineas dreams of opening a school where he can offer gardening and landscaping classes to others in the community. He is working hard towards this goal by studying part time and will be writing his matric in June of this year. Jozana says, “We are proud to be associated with a driven, capable and hardworking yet humble entrepreneur like Phineas.”

Macadamia research symposium at Tzaneen The Southern African Macadamia Growers’ Association (SAMAC) will host its annual macadamia researchs symposium at Fairview River Lodge in Tzaneen on 4 June. The event always draws considerable local and international interest and serves as a forum for the sharing of research carried out in orchard practices, pest and disease management and maintenance of nut quality after harvest. According to Dr Gerhard Nortjé, technical manager and research coordinator of SAMAC, researchers, growers, and processors will get great value from the information shared but will also establish valuable networks. Several SAMAC-funded research projects will be presented at the symposium. Among them are Selection and evaluation of new cultivars in macadamias, The macadamia stinkbug control programme, The determination of appropriate storage protocols for macadamia kernel and Development of guidelines for setting sell-by dates. Nortjé adds that SAMAC is also fortunate this year to have an international researcher presenting at the symposium. Dr Rob Morisson from the USDA-ARS was invited by the stinkbug committee to come and assist in finding a pheromone for the control of the two-spotted stinkbug. He will also take part in the stinkbug workshop on 5 June, the day after the symposium. For more information phone 015 307 1520 or E-mail info@subtrop.co.za.

Live TV at Madimbo for Zuma’s inauguration The people of Madimbo and surrounding villages will be able to watch the live broadcast of the inauguration of Pres Jacob Juma, which will take place at the Union Buildings in Pretoria tomorrow (Saturday). This comes after the Government Communication and Information System and Musina Local Municipality took an initiative to provide a big screen for

public viewing at the Madimbo Community Hall. Musina municipal spokesperson Mr Wilson Dzebu says the live broadcast will help those community members who did not have access to modern connectivity devices. “We have a duty to make sure that even people in rural areas are aware of what is happening around them. We are also aware

that not all households in the rural areas have access to television sets. This is an initiative to put them on par with their counterparts in urban areas. We expect all community members to be seated by 10:00.” Dzebu says all community members are welcome and the municipality expects the hall to be filled to capacity.

Forum to address the spread of rabies A group of community members who are concerned about the spread of rabies in the Vhembe area has formed a forum which aims to address this problem. According to the forum’s senior co-ordinator, Mr Luambo Munzhedzi, the forum is composed of community members, a local and an international team of volunteers from veterinary professions to

animal welfare assistants, the SPCA and animal health technicians. They are especially concerned about the ever-increasing population of stray dogs. “We formed this forum some time ago after realising that the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health couldn’t tackle and win this battle alone,” he said. “These two departments have been on the receiving end of the whole epidemic and they have been doing what they can to eradicate rabies,” he said. He explained that the problem was exacerbated by the increase in the number of dogs per household, which is between two and three. The awareness project starts on 7 July and ends on 8 August. “We not only focus on vaccination and sterilization campaigns, but also on animal welfare and awareness campaigns in schools about this deadly disease,” said Munzhedzi. “We hope to achieve more, with the media doing their part in letting the public know of the importance of looking after animals.” He added that they were also looking for volunteers during the campaign to help within their communities as data collectors, veterinary staff, markers, and drivers. “For this project to be successful, we ask businesses, schools, transport companies, funeral undertakers as well as traditional leaders around Vhembe to join us in fighting this disease,” he pleaded. He said that their biggest challenge was that they depended on public sympathy and support to carry this costly kind of initiative. The expenses range from medications used during sterilisation to logistics, fuel and also The forum’s senior co-ordinator, Mr Luambo to feed the volunteers Munzhedzi, says the war against rabies can during the 30-day pebe won. riod.

Senior municipal officials visit Maheni As another way of intensifying the relationship between the community and the government, senior officials of the Vhembe District Municipality visited Maheni village where they interacted with the local community. The visit, led by District Mayor Tshitereke Matibe, was also meant to monitor the progress of projects in Mutale and also to hear the community’s views about service delivery in the area. Senior traditional leader Thovhele Vudzitshena Nethengwe said he was happy about the good working relationship between the municipalities and

traditional leaders. He raised concern, however, about the poor road condition in the area, together with the lack of water supply. The water problem is allegedly caused by the fact that a water project to the value of more than R12 million is failing to deliver water as a result of technical problems. “The poor conditions of our schools must also be looked at,” said Nethengwe. Several community members also raised their concerns about unemployment, incomplete RDP houses and other matters. Matibe said he was aware of the water challenges in the area and the poor road conditions. He

said a contractor would assess the pipes supplying water to the community to identify the problems. About unemployment he said there would be discussions with traditional leaders in order secure land that would be used for creating solar power. “This project is similar to the one done in the Eastern Cape, where they farm solar power to boost Eskom’s electricity supply. As Vhembe is a very hot area, it was realized that it could be a very good place where we could farm solar energy and boost the electricity supply. Local communities will benefit from this project as they will get jobs.”

“Use qualifications to benefit society” The rector of the University of Venda (Univen), Prof Peter Mbati, has urged graduates to use their qualifications wisely to benefit them and society. Mbati was speaking at the graduation ceremonies of Univen last Thursday and Friday and conferred more than 1 600 degrees, diplomas and certificates.

He thanked all those who had played important roles in the lives of the graduates, such as lecturing staff, parents and academic leaders, “nurturing and sharpening them from the first time they enrolled, up to this point in time where they have matured, qualified and are ready to enter the world of work.” He said the university was confident that the graduates had acquired the necessary skills and competencies to allow them to flourish in whatever career choice they would pursue. One of the graduates, Ms Tholiso Ngulube, a student in environmental sciences, said hard work and determination were behind her success. “I did work hard through all my studies, and I was looking for the award. I thank God for all of my success.” Some of the graduates show off their certificates.

Thohoyandou Stadium will be ready to host Absa Premiership League matches when the activities for the new season kick off in the second week of August. According to the manager of sports and recreation in the Thulamela Municipality, Mr Ronald Makhadi, the contractor is currently doing the final touches on the pitch. He mentioned that they expected that the stadium would be officially handed over to the municipality before the end of next month. About R8 million has been spent on the refurbishment of the stadium. Apart from the pitch, the changing rooms, ablution blocks and the water lines had been refurbished as well. The opening of the Thohoyandou Stadium comes at a time when a local club, Black Leopards, is on the brink of gaining promotion to the Absa Premiership Division. Lidoda Duvha, Polokwane City and Milano United are currently taking part in the promotional play-off matches. The best team in the promotional playoffs will gain promotion to the country’s elite league. Thohoyandou Stadium was officially closed in 2009 because the the authorities wanted to renovate it, so that it could be used as one of the training venues for the FIFA 2010 World Cup matches. The anticipated renovations became a nightmare when it was announced that the stadium would no longer be used as a training venue during the historic event. The closure of the Thohoyandou Stadium forced Black Leopards to use the Tshifulanani and Malamulele Stadium as their home venues for two seasons

before the team was relocated to Polokwane after gaining promotion to the Absa Premiership Division two seasons ago. Black Leopards are using the Giyani Stadium in their promotional play-off matches.

“Reader baffled about reaction to letter

I

really am baffled to note that the only response to my letter in the Limpopo Mirror of 25 April happens to come from Mr Khuliso Nemadzivhanani. Nemadzivhanani is one of our people whose lot causes me concern which led to my letter whose actual intention was to cause discussion over, among others, issues regarding the set-up at Univen. I am disappointed to note that Mr Nemadzivhanani decided to deal only with two issues contained in my letter and has chosen to use the opportunity to take a swipe at or to indirectly advise the Univen Council on how staff matters should be run. Before one can take up the matter with him I wish to ask him why he should state that he is “a former registrar” and as to whether his matter is not sub-judice, as it appears it still awaits finalization through the courts. Yet as he is the one who chose to bring his matter into the public arena in order for the public and us others to comment, he should inform us what

occurred which rendered him to be “the former registrar.” If his house is clean one will therefore be obliged to value the quality of his advice. Anyway the ANC has already lost a reasonable chunk of its support and will still go lower as long as it stays at this standard of governance and its unfounded belief that it defeated the apartheid government at a Battle of Beitbridge in 1989. I also am disappointed to note that Mr Nemadzivhanani has tried his hand in legal matters. I believe he does not intend saying that erection of toll gates on existing roads is not tantamount to double taxation and that the legislation passed, for that purpose, was not draconian especially when it is meant to apply selectively. I also hope that he also is not saying that road improvements in Sekhukhune and other parts of the province are not having heavy cargo carriers using them which also require paying for their maintenance. Politician receives degree in social work “One is never too old to go back to school or too late to start afresh. Life has a lot of opportunities for one to have a fresh start.” These strong words came from the Vhembe Cope chairperson, Mr Geoffrey Tshibvumo, after he had received his BA in Social Work from the University of Venda last Thursday. He was one of around 1 600 students who graduated on that day and said that he had realised that life experiences required understanding of the causal relationship between the economy, social policy and the inherent inter-relationships. “Going back to school has been an act of love for my community,” he said. “I had to ask myself: ‘How could I give my all to the community while I couldn’t commit myself to love myself?’ During the degree programme, I had the opportunity to investigate how the system is interwoven on one hand and, on the other hand, how best to create a system that could best respond to the challenges towards building better communities and responsible individuals.” He said nothing was more powerful than knowledge and added that the past few years of his fulltime engagement with academia had proved that present South Africa required one to be equiped with education. “It is not easy for one to resign from a well-paying job with benefits and go back to school,” he shared. “All this is because I saw what others couldn’t see - I had my road-to-Damascus experience.” Tshibvumo said that even youth adults and pensioners should understand that nothing should stop a person from achieving what they waned; in this case, getting back to school. “Going back to school as a politician helps me understand that, indeed, an empty tin makes a lot of noice,” he says. “It helped me understand that there is a direct relationship between the quality of decisions made in committees and the quality of public representation.” He said that leaders who had no education were easily manipulated in meetings and within

the legislature. “They are more often than not emotional, while those with education are rational and scientific,” he said. “Education differentiates participants and benchwarmers that are released during voting time.” Tshibvumo said that another reason for him to go back to school was to get more knowledge and education because public office required people who could engage with reports and provide leadership for the development of South Africa. “I now am better than I was when I first went back to school and this is not the end of it,” he said.

Mr Geoffrey Tshivumo obtained his BA at Univen.

Truck without wheels after suspects run off A truck is without wheels, after a Limpopo woman foiled the theft of her goods by blocking the exit of her business with a van. Ms Martha Maluleke of Mphambo confronted the robbers, who included her cleaner from Mozambique, and told them they faced arrest because they were stealing her goods. They then ran away, leaving behind the truck. Later Maluleke called the police and removed the wheels from the truck to prevent the owners from coming back and taking the vehicle away. Maluleke says she drove past the business site and saw a big

truck there, and she went to check. She found the truck about to take off with the goods. “I asked them what was happening and they said they had bought the goods from the owner. I said I am the owner and they would be arrested,” she said. She said one of the people appeared to threaten her, but she closed the gate by blocking it with her van. “Although we have notified the police, my husband, Norman Maluleke, will come back on Friday and we will decide what to do,” she said. The truck has a Gauteng registration number and, according to the papers found inside the car,

the owner pays for the licence in Midrand. “We have confiscated a Mozambican passport inside the vehicle and it is at Malamulele Police Station,” she said. The goods are from the information technology college the Malulekes are building. “Since they ran away on Tuesday morning, we have not heard from them or the owner of the vehicle,” said Maluleke. Malamulele police spokesperson W/O Alson Mapindani says according to the records they have, the case has not yet been reported. “If it has been reported, it has not been recorded yet,” he said.

Stars showed no respect for their elder brothers and matched them pound for pound in all departments. Ndaedzo Phalandwa, Defenders’ top goal scorer, could not display his normal impressive skills, as Sakaka Makgopo had marked him tightly. The home side’s John Marindi came close to scoring, but his attempt missed

the target by a whisker. The referee, Mr Ndifelani Mathabwe, issued his first yellow card to Aaron Lisoga of Defenders for rough play on Sydney Luvhengo. Defenders missed a golden opportunity when their dribbling wizard, Ndaedzo Lisoga, forced his way through from the far left corner but shot wide. They broke the deadlock, however, when Mberegeni Mahosi finished off a header from Aaron Lisoga. The equaliser came in the 28th minute when Godwin Mahuwa’s shot hit

the back of the net with a brilliant strike. Rinae Salani, the Defenders’ keeper, suffered the pain of watching the ball going beyond his reach, after Mahuwa unleashed a powerful shot from within the box. The half-time score was still 1-1. Lucky Funyufunyu nearly brought Stars back into the game, but his shot went wide a few minutes minutes before the final whistle. Later in the game, Takalani Mbekwa and Itani Selota of Stars and Isaac Makhuvha of Defenders were also cautioned by the referee.

Milano declares war against Leopards Black Leopards will be in for a big surprise if they take Milano United for granted when they meet in their second-round promotional play-off match at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town next Wednesday, 28 May. Speaking after their game against Black Leopards at the Giyani Stadium on Sunday, the coach of Milano United, Mr Theo Hempe, said that they still stood a chance of gaining promotion to the Absa Premiership Division, despite the fact that they are still to win a match in the promotional play-offs. Milano shared the spoils with Polokwane City when they played to a goalless draw at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town last Wednesday and lost 1-2 to Black Leopards at the Giyani Stadium on Sunday. Hempe said that their remaining two fixtures would be war from the onset and that his charges

were ready to pay whatever price was necessary to get the maximum points, even if it meant to die on the field of play. He further stated that they were going to fight it until it was mathematically impossible for them to gain promotion. United’s next fixture will be against Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday. Their last hurdle will be Black Leopards at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town next Wednesday evening. Should Milano fail to win against Polokwane City on Sunday, the match against Black Leopards next week will be of mere academic interest, as it will be impossible for them to gain promotion. When asked about their defeat against Black Leopards at Giyani Stadium last Sunday, Hempe could only say that “we lost to the better side”. Leopards’ head coach, Mr Kostadin Papic, said that they would fly to Cape Town with one thing in mind, viz. to collect the maximum points at the expense of Milano United. Leopards’ top striker, David Zulu, will not be part of the team when they play Milano as he is still nursing a groin injury. Leopards’ Malawian defender, Harry Nyirenda, will be available for selection. He was out of action for three matches after seeing red in their game against FC Cape Town four weeks ago.

Benny’s and Dynamos in thrilling draw Benny’s Care gave Dynamos a tough time and the two teams eventually shared the glory, following a goalless draw in their MMK Insurance Brokers League match at Tshiozwi on Sunday. A fortnight night ago, Dynamos hammered Benny’s 6-1 in a league match. Benny’s did their homework during their preparations for this match. The game was characterised by squandered opportunities. Both sides missed a number of chances, however. The game nearly took an ugly turn when the players of both teams started to display rough play skills. The situation was calmed by the referee, Didi Luruli, who flashed three red cards in quick succession. The first player who was red-carded was Murubini Manyane of Benny’s, who Tshiginga Netshiendeulu of Dynamos shields the ball tackled Nyathi Muvhango from behind. from Lavhelesani Mukomafhedzi. Victor Mulaudzi of Dynamos and Zano Muleba of Benny’s followed suit a little later for fighting. Mutshidzi Nemaxwi formed a deadly combination with Evans Munyadziwa and Rotshidzwa Tshiluka at the forefront and kept the Dynamos defence running for cover. Mashudu Nengovhe should have put Dynamos ahead, but his shot went astray. Douglas Maluleke of Benny’s and Mashudu Nengovhela attack the ball. Black Leopards started their promotional play-offs programme with a bang with a 2-1 victory over Milano United at the Giyani Stadium on Sunday. The home side started the game like a house on fire with their strikers, Rendai Ndou and Maboke Matlakala, forcing the defence of Milano to play with their backs against the wall. The Dzimauli-born referee, Mr Shumani Tinyani, flashed the first yellow card in the sixth minute. Devon Saal of Milano United tackled Rendani Ndou from behind and Tinyani was quick to flash yellow. Although Ndou was injured during the incident, he soldiered on. Lidoda Duvha took the lead in the 14th minute. Rendani Ndou won the ball from the left corner and unleashed a powerful ground cutter. A defender of United, Thibang Phethe, deflected the ball back into his own net while trying to clear. Leonard Ntshangase of Leopards was also booked for dangerous play in the 29th minute. The visitors from Cape Town found the equalizer nine minutes before the end of the first half. They were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Taariq Fielies headed home to bring the half-time score to 1-1. Ntshangase’s performance deteriorated with time, and he was replaced with Bafana Sibeko in the 55th minute. Sibeko formed a deadly combination with Edgar Manaka and Meshack Maphangule in the middle of the park. Leopards then sacrificed the injured Rendani Ndou, who gave way to Sphamandla Sangweni. The goal which earned the Thohoyandou outfit three vital points came in the 69th minute. Maboke Matlakala beat the United keeper, Wensten van der Linde, with a ground cutter. Maboke Matlakala was replaced with Ivan Mahangwahaya shortly after scoring the goal. Meshack Maphangule was also reprimanded with a card for a late tackle on Richard Webber in the 74th minute. Leopards’ keeper, Jacob Mokhasi, denied the United left winger Ganief Stellenboom what everybody thought was a sure goal in the 84th minute. Mokhasi palmed the long-range volley away for a corner kick.
