Ek dink die skok is net ‘n bietjie te veel vir haar liggaam,” het Tony gesê. Ten spyte hiervan, het Tony gesê, probeer hulle steeds positief bly. Maringa ooglopend geskok toe hy sien hoe ver Heidi-Lene se keel toegegroei het. Hy het gesien hoe die Here Jesus, wat aan die regterhand van God as Hoëpriester gaan sit het, nou staan terwyl die eerste martelaar ter wille van sy grote Naam en eer vir die waarheid sterf. “Daar is geen vrees in die liefde nie; maar die volmaakte liefde dryf die vrees buite” (1 Joh. 4:18). In teenstelling daarmee, vlug die verharde sondaar van God se heiligheid af weg. Back to jail for Els after losing appeal By Jo Robinson

The 45-year-old Jacques Els, who was found guilty of possession and dealing in rhino horn without the required permits as a result of a plea bargain in March 2012, appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional court on 15 November to receive his final sentence. Els spent five months imprisoned by the Department of Correctional Services in Anderson Street after being ordered to begin serving his original sentence immediately in July 2012. He was then let out on bail of R4 million in December of the same year, awaiting the outcome of his appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeals in Bloemfontein. At the time, he said that he held no “feelings of hatred towards anyone” because of the time he had had to spend behind bars. He said that he was elated to be going home, and that his time behind bars was the best thing that could have happened to him because that time had brought him closer to God. Els’s original sentence was eight years jail time, an additional suspended sentence, as well as a fine of R1 million to be paid to the Green Scorpions. In

his plea bargain, he explained that he had bought the rhino horns with the intention to sell them later if the ban on dealing in rhino horn was lifted. Els bought them from his co-accused, Tom Fourie (51), who committed suicide in 2010. He said that the rhinos had been tranquilised and their horns harvested. Not one had been killed, according to Els. He said that he believed that his actions had ensured that the rhinos were not targeted by poachers. His plan was to apply for permits later, but before he could do that, the horns were stolen from his home in Thabazimbi during September 2010. After hearing Els’s case, the Appeal Court judges agreed that the Louis Trichardt Regional Court had made an error. According to them, the magistrate had accepted that the rhinos had been illegally hunted and killed for their horns rather than being tranquillised. “The Regional Court made a mistake in handling Els as if he was a poacher that killed rhinos, which he was not.” They reduced his sentence to four years and repealed the R1 million fine to the Green Scorpions. Even though the judges did not agree with the eight-year jail sentence, they did agree with Magistrate Pat Cloete, who said that, regardless of whether people killed rhinos for their horns or possessed their horns illegally to make a profit, this behaviour was reprehensible and contributed to the destruction of South Africa’s wildlife. “Illegal activities such as those that Els took part in fuels the illegal international trade in rhino horn,” added the Appeal Court. The national prosecuting authority brought an application ordering Els to begin serving the balance of his sentence, but his defence team requested time to 17 March 2017 to bring the needed documents to the court. Magistrate PV Mudau accepted their request and said that bail would be left in place as a lower court could not overturn a High Court judgement. Els told the Zoutpansberger outside the court at that time that he was very relieved that he did not have to go straight back to jail. With no further legal delays possible last week, however, Els started serving his sentence. The illegal trade in rhino horn continues apace, with 13 horns sent from South Africa in October

this year being confiscated in Vietnam, according to Reuters, hard on the heels of the seizure of more than a ton of illicitly sent wildlife “products” that were also sent from this country. After an announcement in October from China that it was going to allow the use of rhino horn and tiger bones and parts for “scientific, medical and cultural” purposes caused a worldwide uproar, the country has since postponed the lifting of their current ban (imposed in 1993) on such use of these animals.

Love on a Leash training school for dogs will be conducting its first information session and intake at 10:00 this Sunday, 25 Novem ber, at the SPCA kennels. The new business in Louis Trichardt is owned and operated by Alicia Thomas, who is wellknown to residents for her tireless work for animals with the SPCA. Love on a Leash will be held weekly at the SPCA grounds in Louis Trichardt, and Alicia is inviting dog owners who would like to know more before signing up to pop along this Sunday, with or without their dogs, to see how the dog training will work. Alicia was trained at the Limpopo K9 Academy in June and identified the need for a place in Louis Trichardt where people could learn how to train their own dogs. “Some of the main reasons why dogs end up in shelters

is that humans don’t train them, and then they blame everything on the dog. So, this is actually human training on how to train your dog.” said Alicia. She said that more trained dogs would mean fewer animals ending up in shelters and that, with proper training, people get to experience the full joy of having a canine companion. “Every dog deserves to be trained to reach its full potential,” said Alicia. “Dogs are puppies until they are two years old, and they really do want to be trained. Five minutes of focused attention from a human makes a huge difference when it comes to building bonds. A lot of dogs are just misunderstood.” Services offered by Love on a Leash are: First 12 Weeks Obedience for puppies of 12 weeks to six months; First 12 Weeks Obedience for all dogs older than six months; and Obedience Monthly (after completing a 12-week contract). The sixth annual Lilizela Tourism Awards took place on Saturday night, 17 November, where more than 800 finalists from the provincial Lilizela Awards all congregated in the ballroom of the Sandton Convention Centre to celebrate the best of the best within the tourism industry. Among them were Murray and Henn. Launched in May 2013, the Lilizela Tourism Awards aim to recognise and reward the highest levels of excellence in the tourism value chain. 7 JINGLE BELL TOY RIDE

The Soutpansberg Cycling Club’s annual Jingle Bell Toy Ride will be on 7 December. The entry fee for the race is a soft toy, which will be handed out to the town’s less fortunate children over the festive season. As ever, cyclists will gather in the parking area at Mike’s Kitchen from where they will first cycle to Thompson’s Motors and from there to Mount Fuji Motors. Die voëlslang of takslang (Thelotornis Capensis) is nog ‘n toevoeging tot die Soutpansberg se lys van dodelike slange waarvoor daar tans geen teengif is nie. Volgens plaaslike slangkenner en -vanger Jan “Slang” van Rooyen word hierdie lang slange van ongeveer 1,2 meter egter selde gesien, weens hulle amper volmaakte kamoeflering. “Hierdie slange word aangetref in struike en klein boompies waar hulle jag maak op boomgeitjies, akkedisse en verkleurmannetjies,” het Van Rooyen gesê. As hierdie slang bedreig voel, het Van Rooyen verduidelik, sal hy sy keel opblaas en byt na die gevaar as waarskuwing. “Takslange is dodelik vir die mens en, soos die boomslang, is hierdie slang ‘n agtertand slang met ‘n kragtige hemotoksiese gif. Daar is tans geen teengif vir hierdie slang nie en boomslang teengif werk nie op hierdie slang se byt nie. Gelukkig is byte van hierdie slang baie

skaars,” het Van Rooyen gesê. Wanneer hierdie slange teëgekom word, het Van Rooyen gewaarsku, moet hulle liefs nie gepla word nie en eerder met rus gelaat word. “Hierdie pragtige slange kan uitgeken word aan hul spiesvormige koppe en die sleutelgatagtige pupille van die oë. Die slang lyk ook regtig soos ‘n tak. Hierdie slang het ook ‘n helderoranje tong met swart op die einde,” het Van Rooyen gesê. Volgens Van Rooyen is hierdie slange nie gebiedsgebonde nie, maar sal hulle in ‘n area bly waar daar genoeg kos, water en skuiling is. Mine acquires surface rights to two key farms Mining News

MC Mining announced that its subsidiary, Baobab Mining & Exploration, has reached an agreement under which it will acquire the two key properties required for its Makhado hard coking and thermal coal project north of the Soutpansberg. “The purchase agreement will result in Baobab owning the Lukin and Salaita properties and is subject to a suspensive condition, which the parties have every expectation will be met in early January 2019,” said MC Mining in a media statement last Thursday. The company has been pursuing various avenues, including legal and negotiations on commercial terms with the owner, the privately owned Akkerland Boerdery, who utilises the farms for commercial hunting purposes. If the names Lukin and Salaita sound familiar they should. The two farms made international news headlines earlier this year as they were first on a list of properties to be expropriated without compensation by the South-African government. Civil rights organisation AfriForum waded in on the ensuing legal battle, arguing that government’s attempt to expropriate the two farms at 10% of the market value seeks to employ land reform as the pretext to hide the real motive behind the expropriation: That the government wants to lay its hands on the rich coal reserves below the surface of these farms to facilitate expansion of the Chinese government’s economic interests in South Africa, namely the Musina-Makhado SEZ.

Hawks nab several senior oﬃcials Crime

The Hawks arrested two senior officials in Limpopo on Monday as part of a sting operation against corruption in the province. Among those arrested by this specialist priority-crime-investigation unit was a 54-year-old deputy director stationed at the Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Centre outside Louis Trichardt. He was arrested in Thohoyandou for alleged fraud and corruption. “The suspect, who is responsible for procurement at the correctional centre, allegedly colluded with the service provider to overprice goods exorbitantly in return for

gratification,” said the Hawks’ provincial spokesperson, Capt. Matimba Maluleke. According to Maluleke, the correctional centre suffered a loss of more than R300 000 as a result of this alleged fraud. “His accomplice, who owns a clothing company in Polokwane, was also arrested this morning. Both suspects were summoned to appear before the Makhado Magistrate’s Court on 11 December 2018,” said Maluleke. Elsewhere in the province, the Hawks arrested a 46-yearold prosecutor stationed at the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court (Soekmekaar), also on charges of alleged corruption, fraud and defeating the ends of justice.

“The complainant alleged that he was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property and the prosecutor demanded a R2 000 bribe in order to squash the docket. The complainant allegedly paid R500 to the suspect and the case was indeed withdrawn. The suspect continued demanding more money from the complainant until he reported the matter to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit,” said Maluleke. The prosecutor, Molatelo Herbert Serumule, appeared in the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and was granted R1 000 bail. His case was postponed until 18 January next year.

It would, however, now seem that any future issues regarding ownership will be MC Mining’s headache with the parties agreeing on a selling price of R70 million for the two farms. The purchase price will be settled in two equal tranches of R35 million each. The first tranche is payable on transfer of the properties while Baobab will have access to the properties upon payment of this amount to the conveyancing attorneys. The second tranche will accrue interest at the South African prime interest rate (currently 10%) less 3% (from date of transfer) and is payable on the earliest occurring of the following: the third anniversary of the transfer of the properties; or the first anniversary of production of coal underlying the properties; or completion of a potential land claims and expropriation process that would, in all likelihood result in Baobab receiving market related compensation under present legislation. Should the properties be expropriated in favour of the land claimants, MC Mining will negotiate access terms with the Minister of Land Affairs and the successful claimants who are expected to be communities who have a shareholding in Baobab. “The agreement to acquire Lukin and Salaita is a significant step for MC Mining and completes the suite of surface rights required for our permitted flagship Makhado Project. With the acquisition of the properties, the company can proceed with the geotechnical and related studies for the mine’s infrastructure. The initial tranche of the purchase price will be funded from internal cash flow,” said Brown.

On 14 November, the spokesper son for the Limpopo Department of Health, Neil Shikwambana, announced that an outbreakre sponse team had been despatched to Alldays, where a case of cholera had been confirmed. A worker on a farm in the Alldays area, who had recently returned from a trip to Zimbabwe, went to the clinic suffering from vomiting and watery diarrhoea. Analysis of samples confirmed that the patient was infected with cholera and he was transferred to the Helen Franz hospital for treatment and recovery. So far, no further cases of cholera have been reported in Limpopo, but health services are on alert. Cholera is an acute gastrointestinal infection caused by a water-borne bacterium called Vibrio Cholerae that, in certain conditions, can spread dramatically. Infected people lose huge amounts of fluids in very short periods of time, and if these are not replaced quickly, death can result. Symptoms include the sudden onset of nausea and vomiting, and explosive, extremely profuse watery diarrhoea. Historically, even though cholera has been around for a very long time, only after a massive outbreak in 1854 was it discovered how the illness was

transmitted. John Snow was a doctor living in Soho, England, at the time and did not agree with the general consensus that it was transferred through the air. After discovering a large number of infections happening in close proximity to a particular public water pump, he managed to arrange for its handle to be removed. When the cholera outbreak stopped directly after that, the discovery was made that the water in it had been contaminated by a baby’s cholera-infested nappy. While one case of cholera cannot be considered an outbreak by a long way, Shikwambana has advised the public to be sure to disinfect any water that has any possibility of being infected. Wash hands and fruit and salad ingredients in water that is guaranteed not to be contaminated. With hundreds currently dying from cholera and typhoid in countries close to our borders, the Department of Health wants the public to be aware that more cholera incidences are possible at this point, so any signs of acute diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting should be reported immediately. Cholera proliferates in unsanitary conditions, and in times of drought, the fact that cholera is water-loving does not mean that it will be weaker. When water is scarce, a cholera outbreak can happen with ease as hygiene loses precedence to hydration.

The SPCA urges residents to make bookings as soon as possible as available spaces for pets are filling up fast. Prices are R60 per day for dogs and R50 per day for cats. For your pets’ own safety, you must make sure that all your pet’s inoculations are up to date, as well as deworming and dipping. An upset Yolanda Cronjé of the Louis Trichardt SPCA this week shared a tragic tale of a puppy who had been run over in Kort Street and then left broken and bleeding in the road while the driver drove away from the scene, even though fully aware of what he had done. “A horrible thing happened on Thursday, 15 November,” Yolanda told the Zoutpansberger. “At 06:42 I received a call from a friend saying that a bakkie had just driven over a dog and then sped away. After a painful experience for this puppy, Dr Freddie Harris of Blouberg gave him pain medication, and after an x-ray told me that besides the wounds, he had a pelvis fracture as well, which would have to be set with screws. This was a tough call to make as the SPCA would be responsible for payment for the operation at this point. We felt that we had to fight for this boy and we managed to get the funds to pay the vet bill after I got the approval of the whole committee.” The SPCA can ill afford extra expenses and would greatly welcome any

contributions from the public towards his account. Contributions can be paid into account name SPCA Louis Trichardt, Standard Bank Louis Trichardt, account number 282 374 639, branch code 05 25 49 using the reference ‘Jack Russell’. The SPCA are aware of who ran this puppy over and left the scene, and appeal for them to do the right thing and at least contribute also. It is not uncommon for people to drive over or otherwise hit animals with their vehicles, and according to Yolanda, it is unfortunately also not uncommon for these people to keep on driving without stopping to see if the creature that they hit is dead or alive and help or get help for it if it is alive (take it to a vet) and injured. “Even if the animal died on impact, then at least dignify what happened and move it to the side of the road,” she said. Yolanda urges anyone who witnesses such hit and run incidents to get as much information and evidence as possible, and phone the SPCA inspector to lodge a formal complaint. GG-Horse Riding had its first official Fun Day on Saturday, 17 November. With a special visit from Ragatag Cowboy from Texas and lots of games on horseback, children and parents alike enjoyed the day immensely. An excellent century by De wald Joubert helped Louis Trichardt Cricket Club score a convincing 173run victory over Nirvana in the Limpopo Impala Cricket League on Sunday. The match was played at the Louis Trichardt oval and the home side batted first. The two openers, Leon Olwage (55) and Craig Viljoen (51), put up a 113run partnership in fewer than 15 overs to set the stage.
