Most wanted suspects in custody Only two months ago, Limpopo provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Fannie Masemola, during his visit to the Thohoyandou area, promised to leave no stone unturned in the search for wanted criminals. True to his word, in what could be regarded as a major breakthrough by the police in the area, different units of the police, including the Provincial Crime Intelligence Trio Task Team, Thohoyandou Crime Intelligence, and Thohoyandou Cluster detectives managed to arrest two of the most wanted criminals in the area. The police, led by Maj Gen Kgalani Meetsi, arrested the two ruthless and dangerous suspects, who have been blamed for terrorising communities in the greater Thohoyandou area, last Friday. According to the police, the two, a South African and a Zimbabwean, have already been linked to more than 20 cases of house robbery, rape, murder, attempted murder, carjacking and housebreaking. The suspects, Nyandano Mudalahothe (24) and Peter Zimutha Tshibantsi (26), appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court and their case was postponed to Thursday (yesterday) for further investigations and a bail application. The Thohoyandou area has in recent times experienced a high number of trio crimes (carjacking, house and business robbery) and other violent crimes. The arrest of the trio has been hailed as a blow to criminal syndicates that will, in the long run, lead to a peaceful, safe
and secure policing precinct in the area. According to Limpopo police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto, the suspects are already linked to an incident of house robbery and rape where they broke into a house and severely attacked a husband and wife with sharp objects in front of their daughters, aged 13 and 9. They both then allegedly raped the 13-year-old girl in front of her parents. Otto commended the team and indicated that it had worked hard to make the significant breakthrough. “The team will work tirelessly to ensure that Thohoyandou is ridden of all criminal elements threatening the safety of the people of Limpopo. Investigations to link the arrested suspects to even more crimes in other areas of the province are ongoing,” she said. Gen Masemola congratulated the team on the breakthrough and praised them for their “dedication, perseverance and sterling work that led to the arrest of the two. We are going to intensify our efforts in the fight against crime and all wanted criminals and suspects will be behind bars before the start of the festive season”. After hearing of the breakthrough, Vhavenda King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana added his voice to those praising the good work done by the police. “We commend them for the speedy arrest of the perpetrators of these violent crimes and we further urge communities to continue maintaining a good working relationship with the police by giving them the information they need for cases. We will uproot the crime that is crippling our communities,” he said.

School’s roof in state of near collapse Pupils at Nyadzani Secondary School outside Mutale may soon find themselves in dire straits because the roof of one of their classroom blocks is in a state of near-collapse. According to the treasurer of Nyadzani Secondary, Mr Naledzani Mulovhedzi, learning and teaching are not conducive for the pupils, “and we appeal to the Department of Education to fix the roof as a matter of urgency”. According to him, the roof of the school was damaged by a falling tree during heavy storms in 2010. He added that they had reported the matter to the department, but they did not
receive any positive reaction. “We are appealing to the provincial department of education to look at the matter of our school urgently, before the roof collapses. We are also worried that some of our classrooms are not fit for learning and teaching.” A spokesperson for the Limpopo provincial department of education, Dr Naledzani Rasila, said that plans were afoot for renovating and rebuilding storm-damaged schools and the department had set aside R69 million this financial year to address the problem. “We have already started with identifying such schools
in the province. We appeal to Nyadzani secondary school and other schools that were damaged by heavy storms to register with the department, so that they are not left out when we start with the process,” said Rasila. According to him, his department was proud of addressing the situation and the rural Khubvi Primary School outside Thohoyandou was one of the good examples of what the department was doing to rebuild storm-damaged schools. He said employees in the Department of Public Works had been deployed to start rebuilding the storm-damaged Khubvi Primary.
Mob justice for man who allegedly chopped his lover’s hand off A man who allegedly became jealous after he suspected that his lover was cheating on him, allegedly chopped off her hand and hid it behind a television set on Sunday. The man, who lives at Tshilungoma outside Thohoyandou with his lover and works at a local brick-making company, has been with her for more than 14 years. Everything seemed to be going well until recently, when the man started accusing the women of infidelity. The last straw came on Sunday when he chopped her hand off. After the incident, he was attacked by angry residents who nearly killed him, beating him with any object they could lay their hands on. According to a police report, he lay unconscious for some time, with angry women trying to prevent the staff of the medical services to assist him or to take him to the hospital. It was said that some of the women shouted that the man should be left to die, “as he is not fit to live with human beings.”
Ms Tiny Mudau (40), a friend of the injured woman, said that she went to the house at around 10:00 in the morning. “I heard my friend crying for help, and when I entered the house, I found her in pain with her hand cut off. It was a threatening situation, with the hand lying there and the man still holding the panga, trying to chop her on the head,” she added. “Although shocked, I managed to gain strength and sought help, and she was taken to the hospital. I am so traumatized by what I have seen. Imagine seeing a hand lying on the floor with a man standing there, holding a panga and trying to kill his wife. I am still in shock and this has made not eat for two days,” she said. She said that the injured woman was poor and was fending for her three children, managing to send them all to school on her meagre salary. She further said it was quite shocking to learn that the man had taken the panga to his work place where he sharpened it, but the wife did not sus-
pect anything as he used to help her with firewood in the veld. Munna Ndi Nnyi Men’s Forum chairperson Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini expressed shock after hearing of the incident. “We are going all out in trying to teach men how they should conduct themselves in life, but it seems everything falls on deaf ears. Men are still accused of abuse and attacks that include the killing of women and children, but they are supposed to be the protectors of these defenceless people. They are now the monsters in the families,” he said Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo confirmed the arrest of a man. “Yes I can confirm that we arrested a man, Freddy Mbedzi (47), and we charged him with attempted murder. He appeared in court on Monday and he remains in custody after being treated and discharged from the local hospital. His case was postponed to 23 October (today). “The woman is recuperating in hospital,” he said.

Residents of Madodonga village recently chased, apprehended and beat two men who were found slaughtering two cows at a bushy grazing camp. The residents then called the police to come and take the men away “or else they were going to beat them all day long and into the late hours of the night. We are tired of lazy people who steal our livestock,” said Vho-Philemon Matshavha (79). “These people have been stealing our livestock for many years. Do thieves have a right to help themselves to my cattle? No. I am not happy. They killed my two cows.” Although Matshavha did not lay a hand on any of the two men, he said that he did not feel sorry for the thieves who were beaten by the residents. “I show no sympathy to thieves who destroy our fortunes,” he said. “Residents
did well by beating the laziness out of them. But still I need my cows. Those men must give me my cows.” The two brothers, Daniel Chuma (39) and Dennis Chuma (47), were allegedly found loading the cut-up parts of two cows into their Nissan 1400 bakkie. It was later established that the two were residents of Malamulele, even though they temporarily resided at Ha-Rathidili in Madombidzha village. The spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Sgt Thilivhali Maloa, said that the police had opened a case of livestock theft against the two men. The Tshilwavhusiku police established that the two men were part of a stock-theft syndicate that operated in the area. Information led the police to further arrests and Bolton Sithole (34) and Joyce Bolika (56) were
arrested in Makoshe village, in the Giyani area. According to the police, at least 18 sheep were recovered from Joyce’s home. The sheep were allegedly stolen from different places and people within the Tshilwavhusiku area. Ms Pertunia Muvhango was able to identify her four stolen sheep. She said that she condemned the act of livestock stealing. “I am just relieved because the police returned my sheep to me,” she said. “I had lost hope of ever finding them. I had owned and cared for those sheep for many years. A thief just comes and flies off with my wealth!” All four accused appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on Monday and the cases were postponed to 28 October for further investigation. At this stage, only Joyce Bolika was granted R3 000 bail.

Much-loved Thovhele Mulima passes away The leader of the Mulima clan, Thovhele Vho-Alpheus Mulima, passed away on 15 October at his home after a long illness. He was 76 years old. After receiving news of the death of their much-loved chief, the community of Mulima, who looked like sheep without a shepherd, gathered at the local church premises to map the way forward and plan how they could assist to make sure that their chief received a decent send-off. Mulima was born on April 4, 1939, at Botshetu in Mulima. He was the son of Chief Frans Mulima and was installed as chief in 1978. During his life, Mulima was a member of Contralesa. He was active in the then Republic of Venda and was the Minister of Water Affairs, Speaker of Parliament, Minister of Education, Minister of Health and Minister of Transport. He also served on the first Makhado Transitional Local Council. The MEC for Goghsta, Makoma Makhurupetje, expressed her condolences to the Mulima family. time of the Venda government was his idea. The man loved development. We have really lost a charismatic, disciplined and enthusiastic leader,” she said. Vhavenda King Vho-Toni Mphephu Ramabulana expressed his condolences to the Mulima family. Mphephu said Thovhele Vho- Mulima had served the area with diligence. He added that the late Mulima had contributed a great deal to the shaping of the local Mulima Territorial Council. “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, but are felt in the heart. We will always remember Mulima for all the good things he did during his lifetime. I know everyone is seriously hurt by this incident, but life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass - it’s about learning to dance in the rain,” he said. “This means that we must be focused and continue where this legend has left off. If we have been pleased with life, we should not be displeased with death, since it comes from the hand of the same Master. We will forever mourn him,” said the Vhavenda king. The funeral will be held today (Friday) and he will be buried at the Mulima Royal Graveyard.

Ombudsman keeps an open-door policy
Louis Trichardt High School honoured some of their top orators during the school annual prize-giving for sports and culture on Monday morning. Among those to receive recognition were (in front, from left to right) Sumaya Nakedar (first colours national participation: Radikale Redenaars), Bernice Meiring (first colours national participation: Radikale Redenaars) and Hulisani Mudau (first scroll: provincial winners). At the back are Sahl Essa (first colours national participation: Radikale Redenaars), Anton Scholts (first colours national participation: Radikale Redenaars) and Rudzani Ramabulana (first scroll for three years’ debating time). Absent when the photo was taken were Sweetness Thamae, Tshifhiwa Maingo and Shiluva Nkanyani, who all received their first scrolls as provincial winners.
The South African Military Ombudsman, Lt Gen (Ret) Temba Matanzima, says that his office will remain open to military personnel who feel aggrieved by their working circumstances in the SANDF. His office is entrusted with the responsibility of investigating complaints brought by members of the SANDF who are not satisfied with their conditions of service. The office also investigates complaints brought by members of the public against SANDF personnel while on duty. The Office of the Military Ombud was established in 2012 to investigate and ensure that complaints against the SANDF are resolved in a fair, economical and expeditious manner.Matanzima and members of his staff recently visited the Makhado Air Force Base and 7 SAI Phalaborwa, where representatives of the office interacted with the military personnel. He said during the visit that questions had always been raised by members of the SANDF about the independence of his office. “We would like to assure the members that we are not politically influenced and we will remain independent from the SANDF. We deal with cases brought by members or against members of the force without fear or favour,” said Matanzima. He also mentioned that questions about the independence of his office would fade as time went on. “I think our work speaks volumes. We have assisted a number of soldiers who approached the office for assistance. Our recommendations are being implemented and that should give confidence to those who are hesitant to approach our office for help to resolve their problems,” said Matanzima He added that the outreach programmes were important for the members of the defence force and public, so that they could understand the mandate
and existence of the office. “At these outreach engagements, the office most importantly educates the military personnel on the processes that need to be followed when lodging a complaint with the office after exhausting all internal processes within the Department of Defence. It is essential for members to understand that they cannot approach the office before following internal processes within the force. Our office will remain open to assist them when they are not satisfied with the outcome of their grievances,” said Matanzima.

Well-known businessman laid to rest Hundreds of mourners converged at the Nengovhela family homestead at Tshifulanani to pay their last respects to businessman Phalanndwa Solomon John Nengovhela (93), who was buried last Saturday. He died a fortnight ago after a long illness. He was described by all as a very humble and
dedicated businessman, worker and family man. The son of the deceased, Mr Tshinyelo Nengovhela, said his father had owned a supermarket and taxis. From there his business grew and he later had a shop in Tshiawelo in Gauteng and Tshiozwi. According to him, his father was an entrepreneur and nation builder.
A nation that forgets its culture is doomed, said the acting mayor of Thulamela, Cllr Nndwayamatotswuku Ligege, during the wrapping up of the area’s heritage month celebrations. The event recently took place at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports centre. According to Ligege, the municipality had identified young people to be the target group to attend the event, and more than 500 children showcased their talents to symbolise the importance of their culture. Traditional dances such as tshigombela, tshifasi, makhwaya, and muchongolo were demonstrated during the event. Ligege said that Heritage Day
presented them with the opportunity to display their culture and remember where they came from. “Culture is very important to an African child and we should therefore help to promote our heritage and teach the things we know to the next generation. Our teachers and parents should encourage and be at the forefront of educating young people about their heritage,” said Ligege. She added that the Thulamela Municipality was the home of the Tshivenda- and Xitsonga-speaking people and urged young people to learn both languages spoken in their municipality. A young girl, Phatutshedzo Nekhavhambe, who is also an ambassador representing the Nel-
son Mandela Children’s Fund, encouraged young people not to be shy to speak their languages and expose their culture to the nation. “I am a Venda girl, and besides my home languate of Tshivenda, I speak English. I didn’t know how to speak Xitsonga, but I was challenged to learn more languages spoken in the country,” said Nekhavhambe. One of the performing artists, Mashudu Mukwevho (10) from Tshidimbini village, said he was proud to be given the opportunity to perform. “I am so happy to celebrate our heritage as it makes young people learn about their cultural activities and where we come from,” said Mukwevho.
“He did not want to be rich, but wanted to create wealth for the community,” he said. His children mentioned that their father did not want to see them hanging around, but wanted them to work. “We thought our father was strict, but we realized later in life that he wanted us to be responsible people,” said Tshinyelo.
The acting mayor of the Thulamela municipality, Cllr Nndwayamatotswuku Ligege (wearing traditional clothes), surrounded by councillors, poses for a photograph with some of the children who particpated in the event.

Granny (90) escapes alleged rapist attack A 90-year-old granny wept bitterly when she told Limpopo Mirror about her fight with a young man who allegedly wanted to rape her inside her hut. Now she is afraid that the suspected rapist, who is well known in the community, may attack her again. The incident happened about a fortnight ago at around 03:00 at her home in Mashau-Thenga village, near Elim. Vho-Denga Luvhengo, a pensioner who stays with her granddaughter, is sickly and can hardly walk. On the night of the incident, Luvhengo’s daughter was attending an all-night prayer session at a distant part of the village. The granny explained that she had heard some heavy footsteps outside. She rushed to peep out through a hole in the door. “I saw [a man] dressed in a heavy coat, coming straight to my door,” she said, and added that there was light from an external bulb in the front of the hut, helping her to recognise a local resident. The man knocked softly and the granny asked who it was, but he just moved away from the door and went around to the back of the house, where he then switched off the main switch. He forced open the door. “He came straight towards me and jumped at me as I was sitting in my bed,” she said. “He had his coat unbuttoned and he had no other clothes on. I felt his penis on my thigh. I knew he was going to kill me with his evil intentions.” She added that she prayed for God to give her some strength just once more in her life. “We fought for about five minutes ... as he tried to rape me,” she wept. “I cried for help. He tried to gag me with a cloth that he had picked up, but I pushed his hand off and cried harder.” The intruder finally accepted defeat and ran away after realising that the neighbours would be coming any time soon. Mr John Ndou (52) arrived first at the granny’s house, and other neighbours came too. “She was weeping as she told us that a man had assaulted her in an attempt to force himself on her,” he said. “We were very angry, because he (the same man) had
entered my daughter’s room about an hour earlier and attempted to rape my younger daughter.” Ndou had tried to report both incidents to the Levubu police station. He felt that the police should have visited the old lady at her home and helped her to open a case. He claims that the police told him that the community members should have arrested the suspect. “I requested them to open a case, but they said we should just leave the suspect as he was, because he would do it again – and only then they would come to arrest him,” he said angrily. Ndou explained that the suspect was on a burglary and assault spree. The suspect had allegedly entered Ndou’s house and slipped into the bed of Ndou’s 12-year-old daughter. “She screamed for help and we woke up and rushed to the children’s room,” he said. His daughter told him who the intruder was as he was a fellow resident. The suspect allegedly later confronted Ndou and asked for forgiveness for attempting to rape his daughter. “We forgave him, but a week later I heard some strange noises outside. I picked up a hammer and went out to investigate,” he said. “I found him standing near the chicken shed. I asked him why he was there and he said he was just standing. So I hammered him on the head three times. He ran away.” He added that he was now prepared to go to extremes to “protect my daughters from the rapist who wants to mess up their lives,” he said. “The police are not helping us either. That old lady is in much pain. She also needs counselling, or else the stress will kill her. She has been crying all the time ever since the incident happened.” According to residents who declined to be named, the suspect is in his 30s and he lives alone. His parents have passed away. Luvhengo said that she would never forgive the suspect for the rest of her life. “He denies ever intruding into my house and trying to dirty me up,” she said. “This child used to come here to ask transport money from me, and I helped him many times.
Give your dish that
TRADITIONAL twist!
Now this is how he thanks me for my kindness.” The station commander for Levubu police station, Lt Col Sydney Mashamba, said that the station was not aware of the incidents. “We will send our police officers to the old lady and Ndou now,” he said. “This case sounds very serious and we wonder why we do not have it in our records.”

Zoutpansberg Private Hospital celebrates new ward “Disclose your HIV status to The Zoutpansberg Private Hospital’s passed their final inspections. ber 2001, and from there the hospital grew your relatives,” says MEC heart is still beating strongly for its The first ground for the project was … some of you might remember the old community. Last Wednesday (14th) the hospital, based in Louis Trichardt, welcomed the public into their newly built day ward. It was a happy day for the directors and staff of the hospital. Not only did they finish days ahead of schedule, but they also
turned during February this year. Since then, the hospital faced many challenges to meet the various state departments’ legal requirements and receive their operating licence. In addition, they had to endure water and electricity interruptions and continuously had to direct visitors not to walk across the building site. The new ward will add an additional 10 beds to the hospital’s existing 22 beds. This is in line with the hospital’s motto: “We dare to care.” One of the hospital’s directors, Dr Anton Stroebel, said after the ceremony that the new wing was part of the hospital’s ongoing vision to expand. “We want to continue growing and serving our community,” Stroebel explained. The development of the hospital is being done in small steps in a sustainable manner. “This venture started in 1998 when the founding members of the hospital had a dream and a vision to build a high-quality facility for Louis Trichardt to render private health-care services. This dream became a reality when the first patient was admitted to the hospital in Novem-
house that first stood here on the corner. If you look at what is here before you today, you can’t help but be inspired by the achievement of the founding members and the board of directors,” said Mr George Malan of the Veritas Accounting firm when he toasted the directors and staff of the hospital during the ceremony. Future plans include the addition of a further 50 beds and additional theatres. But before that can happen, the hospital is first going to complete phase two of the current expansion. This will include new admin offices, as well as consulting rooms for visiting specialists and the expansion of the current theatres. The new wing is located left of the hospital’s previous main entrance in Joubert Street (the new entrance is lower down in the paved parking lot). Before construction started, the area used to house the George Malan from the accounting hospital’s administrative offices. firm Veritas in Polokwane was Some of these offices will move responsible for the opening ceremony into the new wing. Beyond this area, visitors will find the corridor with the wards on the left side. The décor is visibly more modern than that of the old wing, but with the light colour palette, the new wing gives off a calm vibe. If all goes according to plan, the first overflow patients will be put up in the new wing this coming Thursday (today). “I cannot wait to start treating patients here,” said Mrs Ina Muller, the nursing manager, during the ribbon-cutCutting the ribbon of the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital’s new ward are, from left to right, Drs ting ceremony. 30 Mrepa,
another star from Makonde The developing village of Makonde, north of Thohoyandou, continues to produce household names in music circles. The latest new kid on the block is Aron Rasivhetshele, who is well known as 30 Mrepa in the local Venda Rap (VenRap) music fraternity. An electrical engineer by profession, Rasivhetshele was born and bred at Makonde village in 1995. Those who have known him from his childhood days agree that Rasivhetshele developed his love of music at a very young age. “He used to
come and watch me rehearse with my band while he was still a little boy. He used to playfully sing along with me. With his sweet voice, it was clear that he would grow up to be one of the best emerging vocalists,” said reggae music legend Shufflers Ragimana, who also hails from Makonde village. Rasivhetshele says he also owes his success to Papa Thile, a famous singer from the same village. “He is the one who introduced me to Ramzee Records where I recorded my debut album, Philiphise, featuring artists such as Bamba, Adolf and V-Boy. Songs like Philiphise, Ro Fhambana, Ndo Tambula and Hendaa were received with joy from my fans and they received massive airplay on both Phalaphala FM and local community radio stations.” He says his fa-
ther, Willem Rasivhetshele, also played a major role in developing his music career. “My father was very supportive from the start and he bought me some musical instruments. This encouraged me to work very hard, knowing that there was someone close to me who loved what I was doing.” Asked how his stage name, 30 Mrepa, came into being, he said with a smile: “I used to play soccer wearing jersey number 30 and after a soccer match, I would go home and continue with my Venda rap music. My friends then gave me the name and I still continue to use it today.” His message to other budding artists is: “If you want to be a musician, it is important to pursue education first. I’m now working as an electrical engineer and I know that I have something to rely on whenever my music career has some challenges.” For bookings, public performances and CD sales, 30 Mrepa can be contacted on 074 619 7392.

His manager and producer, Itani Sihadi, said the album was making waves in the music industry. The new album is available at Dakota Music, Dr Music, Mbengis and also from Mundalamo. Interested people can phone him at 079 155 2398 or his manager, Itani Sihadi, at 073 907 3418.
Top local traditional musician Marcus Mundalamo recently released his fifth album, Vhudabadaba. Mundalamo was the 2013 Tshima award winner in the Tshivenda traditional category. The album has nine powerful tracks and was recorded at Rwista Pac Records at Ha-Magidi. It was produced by Rwista Pac Records’ director and ace producer, Itani Sihadi. The album boasts massive hits such Venda music maestro as Thalano, Zwo Dovha and Murivha. Marcus Mundalamo. Mundalamo, who performed during this year’s Tshima Awards, is now based at Malamulele. He said he was now back after taking leave from the music scene “because of piracy. It costs a lot to come out with a quality album. We spend a lot of time trying to be creative, but after the release of the album it could be [sold] everywhere for a mere R5 or R10.” He added that it was very stressful and depressing “to find your sweat and toil on street pavements, being sold for next to nothing. We tend to lose focus from our creativitiy, as we are not the ones reaping the fruits,” he said. He said it was the love of music that kept him going, otherwise he would have quit a long time ago. “I made a few changes to my new music, and the hit track Ndala has a new complexion with a live acoustic guitar.” He mentioned that they would continue “doing what we love best, giving quality music to our fans, no matter the odds. “This place is a beacon of hope for the elderly, because it is where we come together to learn a wide range of skills and socialise every day.” Those were the words of one of the beneficiaries at the Elim Hlanganani Society for the Care of the Aged, Ms Elizabeth Maluleke (63) of Waterval. “I do knitting, bead making and other artistic crafts,” she said. “And I enjoy what I do. My coming to the centre every day is good for me, because if I were to stay at home alone all day long, I will be bored to death.” The society was established in February 1993, and ever since then it has had a track record of good service to at least 22 communities within the Elim area. The society’s assistant director, Ms Molly Maswanganyi, said the society’s beneficiaries included drop-in-centre children, youths and older persons. They provide social welfare and social-development programmes which include providing home-based care for the elderly. “We provide material assistance to infected and affected people,” she said. “We run programmes such as youth development, capacity building, income generating and proverty alleviation, food security and holiday schemes.” They have 55 older persons for day care, 220 older persons who are being visited by care givers, 113 drop-in-centre children, 1 193 youths in development programmes and 157 home-care points for elderly and disabled persons. “Our joy comes from the good work and reports we get from people whose lives the society has touched in one way or another,” she said. “We have been growing in size and strength ever since we started this organisation. We are able to reach most of our objectives with the help of local and foreign funders who understand the importance of the kind of work we do.” Each member pays a certain annual fee for membership. “Many of these people also donate money and gifts in kind to support our work.” Maswangani said that the organisation’s key to sustainability was adaptability. “Our oganisation has evolved with the changing needs of the local community,” she said. “While we started with home-care projects for older people, we have now expanded our work to address the growing needs of people living with HIV and Aids and vulnerable children and youths affected by this epidemic.” Another beneficiary, Ms Hilda Shuluvani (73), said that when they got there in the morning, they received their breakfast and spent the rest of the day doing different programmes. “It is good because we also do physical exercises. I also like the singing and prayer session, and playing soccer.”

Magangeni residents launch initiative The residents of Magangeni village near Elim have established an initiative which aims to see local post-matric youths further their studies at institutions of higher learning, even if they themselves do not have the financial means to do so. The Take a Child to University campaign, run by Magangeni Innovative Youth Solutions (MIYS), will raise funds and see to it that needy students are not denied an education. The trust believes that there are many youths whose willingness to better their lives continues to shine brightly. “The organisation has been formed to make a difference in the Magangeni community in particular, taking deserving young people with a target to those who cannot afford financially to go to university with effect from 2016,” said Patrick Malima, the organisation's representative. “We are also encouraging learners to study harder to be able to access the funding. We are also requesting companies out there to help our organisation, so that we can all make sure that these children further their education.” He requested all residents of Magangeni to support the initiative. The purpose of launching the campaign was to attract more youths and provide them with all necessary and useful information regarding education assistance. A representative of the youths, Hlulani Chuma, expressed appreciation for the project and said it would help learners reach their dreams. Hosi (Adv) Samuel Mukhari of Njhakanjhaka gave the residents the go-ahead for the project. Pastor Bafana Malomane of Worship Tabernacle
Christian Church in Mavambe, who is known for charitable deeds, encouraged youths to grab the opportunity for financial assistance and make use of it while it lasts. “Many people end up blaming God or people around them for their failure to succeed in life,” he said. “But, today, here are God's children, sent to help you achieve your dreams of getting an education. Thank God for that.”

Working relationship between churches and councils Two local traditional leaders are on a simultaneous mission to build a good working relationship between churches, community structures and traditional councils. Chief Thinawanga Randima of Khubvi village and Chief Tshilidzi Ravhura of Makonde kicked off their campaign by visiting the Christian Worship Centre at Makonde-Tshilulu on Sunday. Hundreds of congregants welcomed the two traditional leaders in a highly organized guard of honour. It was the first time in the history of the church that two traditional leaders from different villages visited the church at the same time. When addressing the congregants, Chief Thinawanga Randima said that it was "unquestionable that a large part of my population are part of the church. It was important for me to visit the churches, so that I can forge a good working relationship between different stakeholders in my community." He added that it would not be possible for the traditional leadership to achieve their goals alone, "because the church plays a major role in restoring the morals of our communities. As traditional leaders, we also depend on the prayers of congregants to rule our subjects with wisdom.” Randima’s sentiments were echoed by Chief Ravhura, who added that the visit was part of his thanksgiving initiative," because God has protected and guided me to lead my people with wisdom." He mentioned that it was just the beginning, because they had a comprehensive programme of visiting all the churches within the area "to preach the same gospel."
Pastor Violet Tinyani of the Christian Worship Centre proclaimed it a real blessing to have the two important visitors with them. "We respect traditional leaders because traditional leadership was created by God. I will
bless them, so that they can lead their people with wisdom. We hope they can visit us every Sunday because we really enjoy being with them here in the house of the Lord.”
Chief Tshilidzi Ravhura of Makonde (centre) praises the Lord, while Chief Thinawanga Randima of Khubvi (left) and Pastor Violet Tinyani of the Christian Worship Centre join the celebration.

Anti-mosquito campaign at Musina In an attempt to stop the breeding of mosquitos, the Musina Municipality and the Department of Health started with a campaign to control the small flying insects that pierce one’s skin to consume blood. The saliva of the mosquito often causes an irritating rash and, in some instances, harmful infections such as malaria and yellow fever. In most species, adult females lay their eggs in stagnant water and aquatic plants. The well-trained team sprayed pesticides in storm-water pipes, stagnant-water areas, waste-water treatment works, and other areas that have the potential to breed mosquitos in Musina. Municipal spokesperson Wilson Dzebu said there was a need to control mosquitoes in Musina since they were breeding very fast as a result of the recent rainfall. “We have no doubt that the
initiative will be received with relief from our community members who reported to us that mosquitoes were seriously troubling them, especially at dawn and dusk.” Dzebu gave some tips to community members on the role they can also play to control the breeding of mosquitos. “Try to avoid going outside as much as possible during these times. Be aware, however, that some species feed during the day and are aggressive biters. Those who have swimming pools must make sure that they are always being maintained. Community members who can afford mosquito nets are encouraged to use them whenever possible. Also consider using insect repellents, but be sure to follow the label directions whenever applying them.” He continued: “Empty water from containers such as flower pots, pet water dishes, cans, gutters, and buckets regularly to disrupt the mosquito breeding cycle. Also keep windows and door screens in good working order to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home. If possible, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants while outdoors and consider staying indoors early in the morning and evening when mosquitoes are most acDepartment of Health employees spray insecticides to control tive. Land owners can assist in research about Fresh food available at Game Thohoyandou damage caused by problem animals The newly revamped Game shoppers want. This formula the expiry of the warranty. Research can help farmers and landowners to limit the damage caused by problem animals. Durham University’s Primate and Predator Project (PPP) is one of the key role researchers and is conveniently stationed at the Lajuma Research Centre on the western slopes of the Soutpansberg Mountain. With their research they try to get both farmers and local communities to live in harmony with their immediate environment in a sustainable manner. In the recent months, a new face has joined the project. Philip Faure is a full-blooded South African and not only has a deep-rooted love for the Bushveldt, but also a passion to work in nature conservation and research in the area. He also has a deep-seated knowledge of the Bushveldt, even though he hails from the Cape region. Philip’s goal is to become better acquainted with the local community, thereby helping
with predators that can threaten to become a nuisance on farms. “Whether you are experiencing problems with leopards, hyenas, jackals, baboons, monkeys or porcupines, I would like to help,” said Philip. He currently works from the main field office of Lajuma. Philip explained that minimizing the damage caused by predator animals was no easy task. Especially farmers are hard hit, with the damages reflecting on their bank statements. It is sometimes easier just to exterminate problem animals and not think about the effect it could have on the environment. These are the situations where Philip can provide valuable guidance. He is well equipped to design preventative strategies for better predator and herd management. “If you work smartly, damage to the biodiversity of an environment can be reduced dramatically,” said Philip. “I’m not here to impose regulations
on anybody but rather to work with the community and for us to come up with solutions together.” Another important task that Philip took over from Lajuma’s ‘hyena girl’, Katy Williams, is the planning of the centre’s annual Nature Evening. This event takes the form of a mini-seminar where various knowledgeable speakers are afforded the opportunity to talk about important local research and environmental conservation plans. The date for this evening will soon be made public. Furthermore, Philip also visits local schools to teach children, by means of interactive games, the importance of protecting the environment. Schools in the area that would like to benefit from these programmes are welcome to contact him and arrange a date. For more information or questions, contact Philip by writing him an email to wildlife.help@ durham.ac.uk or phone him at Tel 071 841 8361.

Nedbank victory for Home Defenders Mpheni Home Defenders were too strong for Wayeni Sea Robbers and beat them 1-0 in their Nedbank knock-out match at Mpheni on Sunday. The boys from Wayeni approached the match like a house on fire, with their mid-fielders on target with excellent passes to their strikers. They threatened to score in the seventh minute, when Vusi Sambo forced his way through the defence of Defenders before passing the ball to Kulani Madlalati. His attempt missed the target by inches and the score was still nil-nil at half time. The second half saw Robbers pressing hard and sharp on the attack. Re-
alizing that their chances were slim, Defenders abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the far back. That did not demoralize his team mates, as they continued to play like a united team. Trust Tshidumo of Defenders scored his team’s only goal in the 64th minute. He unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box and the keeper of Robbers, Nhlamulo Khurumedzha, watched in disbelief as the ball hit the back of the net. The players who w e n t into
the referee’s book for different infringement are Casser Manganyi and Walter Munyai of Robbers. Defenders brought on Rudzani Mashamba and Dakalo Nwanamidwa, but their introduction did not change the image of the match, as their opponents were rock solid at the back.
Phangaman ready for Netshavhutshedzi Local boxing hero Norman “Phangaman” Tshisikhawe is hoping to be victorious in his light welter-weight bout over 10 rounds. He will be fighting against Humbulani Netshavhutshedzi from Gauteng at the Meropa Casino (today) Friday. The fight is scheduled to start at 18:30. Tshisikhawe said that he was going to beat his opponent, probably by a TKO. He said that nothing could stop him from beating his opponent. Netshamutshedzi, on the other hand, said that his brother was in for a surprise, should he underestimate him. Ten bouts will take place during the tournament. Four of the Vhembe boxers who will be trying their luck in the tournament are Tendani Munyai,Thizwilondi Nempandoni, Humbulani Netshamutshsedzi and Norman Tshisikhawe. Tswarelo Motshoeneng from Limpopo and Tisetso Modisadise will be the first to enter the ring. Their junior fly-weight bout is scheduled over four rounds. It will be followed by the light-weight fight over four round between Oupa Mangena from Limpopo and Antony Maloisane of Gauteng. Thizwilondi Nempandoni and Tendani Munyai, both from Vhembe, will exchange blows in their light feather-weight fight, which is scheduled over six rounds. Clautus Mbele and Mxolisi Nombewu, both from Gauteng, will meet in the World Boxing Association’s international vacant bantam-weight title. Their fight is also scheduled over six rounds.

Book boarding well in advance - SPCA Pet owners who wish to board their pets (cats and dogs) at the SPCA’s Louis Trichardt kennels during the December holidays must do so in advance. Bookings can only be made with Mr Lawrence Khodobo between 08:00 and 16:00 and no other bookings will be accepted. “Please do not leave a voice message on any phone and presume your booking has been accepted. It will not be accepted. We also ask that you do not leave a message with one of the kennel staff,” said Mrs Bea Reimer of the local SPCA. All pets, cats and dogs, must be inoculated, dewormed and bathed or dipped before coming into the kennels.
“We will need proof of yearly inoculations, as well as rabies inoculation when you bring your pet in,” said Reimer. Inoculation must take place 10 days before the pet is brought to the kennels. Reimer and Khodobo must also be made aware of pets on medication while these are at the kennels. “If you intend leaving your pets at home during the holiday, please make adequate arrangements with a reliable person for them. Remember, there will be fireworks while you are away, so be prepared,” Reimer warned. The boarding fees are R40 per dog per day and R30 per cat per day. Office hours at the kennels are Monday to Friday from 08:00 until 17:00 and Saturdays from 08:00 until 13:00. The kennels are closed on Sundays and public holidays. People bringing their pets must do so within business hours. Pets left at the kennels over the weekend must be picked up on Monday, unless arrangements are made before the time. TNN through to Nedbank Cup regional semi-final matches Tshakhuma Na Ndilani booked a place in the regional semifinal of the Nedbank Cup KO competition by winning two matches over the past weekend. They beat Ficus FC 3-2 at the Lamvi grounds on Saturday and overpowered United Power Stars 2-1 at the Shayandima School grounds the following day. Their game against Power Stars was a battle from the onset to the bitter end. The first half was characterized by wasted scoring chances. Power Stars were the first to have reason for regret. They came close to scoring in the ninth minute. Their left winger, Mutali Mulaudzi, unleashed from the edge of the penalty box. The keeper of Tshakhuma, or TNN, Moses Nemusumani, braved the shot and palmed the ball away for a corner kick. TNN took the game to the home side soon afterwards. Their killer striker, Godfrey Mudau, was brought down in the 25-meter area. Fhatuwani Mudau shot wide from the free kick.
The future of the coach of Black Leopards, Mr David Bright, is hanging in the balance. According to the club’s spokesperson, Mr Berry Ramunenyiwa, Bright was served with a suspension letter on Tuesday afternoon. His suspension comes after his team’s 2-3 defeat to Mbombela United at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday. Leopards were leading 2-0 until the last 20 minutes of the game but United refused to die and made a late comeback to score three goals. During interviews with journalists from different media houses at the stadium shortly after the game, Bright revealed that the defeat was influenced by the interference by the management in his coaching job. He further stated that he would have replaced his striker, Thembisani Nevhulamba, before half time had it not been for the fact that he was instructed not to do so. Bright’s action did not go down well with the club’s chairman, Mr David Thidiela. In a live interview at one of the Polokwane-based SABC radio stations on Monday evening, Mr Thidiela, who was accompanied by Bright and the team’s captain, Mongezi Bobe, said that Mr Bright had violated a clause in his employment contract which prohibited him from saying negative things about the club in the media. It was during the very same interview that Mr Bright apologized unconditionally for what he had done. “ I am here to apologize unconditionally to the Black Leopards family, fans and the people of Limpopo for what I did,” Bright said. Although he apologized in public, his apology was not enough as Mr Thidiela was quick to say that the Botswana national would still appear before the club’s disciplinary committee to answer to the charges of misconduct. Bright confirmed receipt of the suspension letter and refused to make further comments, saying all enquiries should be directed to the club. When asked about the temporary arrangements in the absence of Mr Bright, Mr Ramunenyiwa said that the assistant coach, Mr Joel Masutha, would be working as the caretaker coach until further notice.

Two difficult hurdles lie ahead for the Black Leopards After dropping three significant league points at home last weekend, Black Leopards are now facing two tricky hurdles. They will travel to Durban tomorrow, where they will fight for league points against Amazulu at the Princess Magogo Stadium. Both Amazulu and Black Leopards lost their matches last weekend. Amazulu gave away points to FC Cape, to whom they lost 1-2, at the NNK Rugby Stadium in Cape Town. The Leopards’ marksman, Kgabo Mashiane, will be available for selection tomorrow. Mashiane watched their game last Saturday against Mbombela United from the grandstand after seeing red in their game against FC Cape Town at the
at Umhlatuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay. Moroka Swallows and Vasco da Gama will lock horns at the Parow Park Stadium. FC Cape Town will fly to Nelspruit, where they will test their strength against Mbombela United at the Kanyamazane Stadium. The other fixtures for next Wednesday are: Moroka Swallows vs Santos, Witbank Spurs vs Baroka, FC Cape Town vs Cape Town All Stars, African Warriors vs Mbombela United, Milano United vs Amazulu, Royal Eagles vs Vasco da Gama and Mthatha Bucks vs Thanda Royal Zulu.
Baroka FC maintain their clean record The National First Division log leaders, Baroka FC, maintained their unbeaten record when they continued to collect maximum league points last weekend. They managed to beat Moroka Swallows 3-0, despite the fact that they were playing away from home. Nkosinathi Ndlovu, Loyiso Simandla and Dineo Shaku scored for Baroka as Swallows failed to fight back. The victory leaves Baroka with 17 points accumulated from seven outings. Mthatha Bucks maintained their winless record when they suffered a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Witbank Spurs at the Mthatha Stadium. Bucks were the first to find the net, but their stamina faded with time. Their solitary goal came via the former Bloemfontein Celtic striker, Moses Spandeel, in the 54th minute. The visitors from eMalahleni retaliated in the 80th minute. Joshua Souls scored from the white spot after his team mate, Freddy Hlabane, was brought down within the box. Things turned against the home side when Cleopas Dube scored a late winner with a header.

No goal was scored within the first 45 minutes, despite numerous attempts from each side. Power Stars were awarded a free kick just outside the box five minutes into the last half. Mpho Munyai beat the keeper with a volley from the free kick. TNN fortified their striking force by introducing Desmond Netshiungani for Junior Mashavhathakha in the 59th minute. TNN threatened to score two minutes afterwards when Desmond Netshiungani tried his luck from the 35-meter area. The ball went a little wide. A defender of Power Stars, Mbavhalelo Rathari, handled the ball within the box in the 67th minute and that was a clear penalty for TNN. Fhatuwani Nemusumani converted from the white spot. Mbavhalelo Rathari of Power Stars was warned with card for a continued argument with the referee. TNN took the lead in the 78th minute. Godfrey Mudau beat the keeper with a volley following a neat pass from Desmond Talukanyani Bugane of Power Stars controls the ball, while Gift Netshiungani. Nemutandani of TNN is on the way to intercept.
Cape Town All Stars returned to their winning ways for the first time in three games with a 1-0 victory over Highlandspark at the Athlone Stadium. The goal which separated the boys from men came in the 67th minute via Thapelo Mathibe, whose ground cutter hit the woodwork before crossing the goal line. Mbombela United have reason to celebrate. They came back from a 0-2 deficit and beat Black Leopards 3-2 at the Thohoyandou Stadium (See a match report elsewhere). Bongani Manana and Lebohang Mabotja scored for Lidoda Duvha. The NFD rookies took the game to the home side later in the game and scored three goals via Siyanda Khumalo, Mxolisi Gumede and Inky Masuku to ensure that they go back to Kanyamazane with full points. FC Cape Town moved to the ninth spot, following their 2-1 victory over Amazulu at the NNK rugby Stadium in Cape Town. The former coach of Black Leopards, Mr Kostadin Papic, is currently a jobless man. His one-year relationship with the Absa Premier League side, Polokwane City, came to an end last week. The Serbian national joined City from Chippa United early last season. His departure from Polokwane comes after a string of poor results this season. Polokwane City are lying in the 12th position, with five points accumulated from six matches. Papic’s relationship with City turned sour after his side lost 1-2 to Supersport United in their Telkom KO Competition match three weeks ago. The club released an official statement regarding Papic’s resignation last Thursday. Papic guided several local Absa Premiership League teams before joining Black Leopards two seasons ago. He stayed for one season with the Thohoyandou outfit. When asked about his future plans, Papic said that he was still trying to come to terms with his current situation. He dismissed the rumour that he was on his way back to Black Leopards, saying he had not received an offer from any club so far.

Taxi association is making a difference At a time when the taxi industry is becoming a battlefield marred by violence and killings, there is one taxi association that still practices ubuntu in its community. On a weekly basis, its members ferry youngsters to different soccer games in the villages, free of charge. The association also
recently presented a kit to the winning team that participated in the association’s tournament. The tournament, which was aimed at reviving soccer and taking the youth off the streets, was held at the local soccer grounds in Vuwani Township. Four teams from the surrounding villages took part in the tournament. The teams that participated were Hanani Home Defenders, Vyeboom FC, Muziafera Blue
Eagles and Sundani City Rovers. At the end of the tournament, Muziafera Blue Eagles emerged the champions by beating Hanani 4-2 in the finals. Mr Rendani Tendani, the secretary of the Vuwani Taxi Association, said that they were given the kit by one of their parts suppliers in Sibasa. Joe Maweja to face The Dolphins in Nedbank Cup clash
Maweja’s demon midfielder, Khuliso Netshaulu.
Local soccer lovers will stream to the Makwarela Stadium tomorrow. That is where two of the Nedbank Cup’s opening matches for the teams affiliated to the ABC Motsepe League will be staged. The hosts, Joe Maweja FC, or Joe Express as they were formerly called, will entertain The Dolphins in the opening match, which is scheduled to kick off at 09:00. In an interview the general manager of Joe Maweja, Mr Mukondi Nemavhulani, revealed that they had assembled a formidable squad, saying any team wanting to beat them would have to work very hard. He stated that they had put together the cream from Maweja Takers and Joe Express, following the merger of the two clubs two months ago. The defenders of Maweja, Dakalo “DK” Ratshitanga and Aubrey Ndou, are expected to keep their danger area clean, while Khuliso Netshaulu and Khumbudzo Muvhango will make things happen in the middle of the park. The second match will be between Bellevue Winners Park and the newly promoted Boyne Young Tigers. Bellev-
ue Winners Park missed the league title by inches last season. The winners of the two matches will meet in the stream final later in the afternoon. The other two matches will be staged at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium in Modimolle. Mosesetjane All Stars will battle it out against A1 Terrors, starting at 09:00. Lephalale Young Killers will have a date with Great North FC in the second fixture that is scheduled to start at 11:00. Two matches will be staged at the Giyani Stadium on Sunday. Bilika All Stars will take on Giyani Hotspurs in the first match, while Nkowankowa Barcelona will test their strength against Gawula All Stars at 11:00. Just like in the other streams, the winners in the first two matches will try their luck against each other later in the afternoon. The last batch of preliminary matches will be staged at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium next Tuesday, October 27. Mighty FC and Polokwane United will meet in the opening match, while Magezi FC and Polokwane Academy will do battle in the second fixture.

Chippas United Ladies kept their title hopes alive by destroying Shayandima Morning Stars 7-0 in their Sasol Women’s League match at the FNB Makwarela Stadium on Sunday. As if they were hypnotized, Morning Stars were down and out from the first whistle. It came as no surprise when the home side scored five goals within the first 45 minutes. Chippas instilled fear into the Stars keeper when they threatened to score within the first minute. Their scoring machine, Nthabiseng Matswi, tried her luck from outside the box. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced back into play. The wheel of fortune turned against the visitors from Shayandima when Chippas broke the deadlock in the 11th minute. Nthabiseng Matswi went loose from the right corner and beat the keeper with a ground cutter. As
if they were leading, Morning Stars started to play defensive football. That forced their defenders to perform overtime duties. Chippas increased the margin in the 24th minute, when Gudani Nephalama was on target with a header. The keeper of Morning Stars palmed the ball back into play and Nephalama, who was waiting in the perfect scoring position, made no mistake with a header. Chippas dictated terms in all departments and their third goal was scored by Salome Nndwa in the 29th minute. Nthabiseng Matswi scored the fourth moments later. She dribbled past two Stars’ defenders in a row and blasted in a rocket. Gudani Nephalama scored the fifth three minutes before half time. Chippas scored their last two goals via Salome Nndwa and Thonifho Kholani Mukhuwana of Chippas hooks the ball, while Mpfareleni Nengovhela later in the game. Rammbwa of Stars is behind her.

Humiliation for Leopards The NFD rookies, Mbombela United, came back from a 0-2 deficit to beat Black Leopards 3-2 at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday. Although it became clear within the first 10 minutes that Leopards’ striker, Thembisani Nevhulamba, seemed to have left his scoring boots at home, the technical staff played him to the finish. He missed a fortune seven minutes into the game. He received a pre-cooked pass from Bongani Manana within the box and shot wide with the keeper already beaten. The home side replaced Ndamulelo Mungadi with Meshack Maphangule in the 16th minute.
Maphangule formed a deadly combination with Katlego Molomo in the middle of the park. Leopards opened their account in the 27th minute. Bongani Manana scored with a header, following a corner kick by Leonard Ntshangase. Thembisani Nevhulamba missed a golden opportunity two minutes later. He hesitated for far too long to unleash within the box until he lost possession. Lidoda Duvha enjoyed their 1-0 lead until proceedings for the first half came to an end. Sifiso Thomo of United was booked for a late tackle on Meshack Maphangule two minutes into the last half. Leopards increased the margin in the
59th minute. Lebohang Mabotja scored from the place kick with a ground cutter. The visitors from Nelspruit did not stop fighting, despite the fact that time was not on their side. They pulled one back via Mxolisi Gumede. He caught the Leopards’ keeper, Avhashoni Tshinuna, napping with a half volley. Leopards replaced Katlego Molomo with Tsepo Molala three minutes later. The move was not enough to stop Mbombela from scoring two quick goals. A substitute, Inky Masuku, scored with a long-range volley before Siyanda Khumalo wrapped up the game with a banana kick in the dying minutes.
