The court will have to determine what had allegedly caused a loyal employee of many years to turn against his employer and brutally strangle her and beat her to death with a hammer. Residents of the Soutpansberg were left in shock on Tuesday morning with the news that the much-loved and well-known local artist and activists against farm murders, the 51-year-old Ms Annette Kennealy, was herself found murdered on her farm Welgevonden along the Louis Trichardt/ Thohoyandou road. “I am without words ... an absolute tragedy. She was so badly beaten that I could not see her. Maybe it is for the better, because I want to remember her as she was the last time a saw her on Saturday,” said Kennealy’s 72-year-old mother, Ms Kim Labuschagne. Kennealy’s murder sent shock waves through the farming community, both locally and abroad. Within minutes of the news breaking about her death, the Zoutpansberger received calls from across the whole country and even Australia. The only thing they wanted to know was: Is it true? Unfortunately, it was true. Friends and family, basically the whole of the Soutpansberg, were left in total disbelief as details of her brutal untimely death started to emerge. According to reports Kennealy was found in a pool of her own blood at her farmhouse. She had severe head injuries, presumably caused by a bloodied hammer found close to her body. It is believed that she was also strangled. The police’s official statement on cause of death, however, indicated that she was

stabbed to death. “She was not stabbed! She was beaten to death,” said Kim. As to the motive for the killing, the court will have to determine that. What is clear, though, is that it might have had something to do with an argument Kennealy had with her only farm worker staying on the farm. Apparently the worker absconded from work and Kennealy confronted him about it. The worker became a suspect in the murder, as he could not be found when Kennealy’s body was discovered. In initial police statements, police urged him to contact his nearest police station to assist the police in their investigation.

It is believed that Kennealy might have been killed as early as Monday morning (20th). Kim said she had communicated with her daughter at around 09:00, but battled to get hold of her after that. Due to the fact that nobody could reach Annette, Kim asked a neighbour to go and check on her on Tuesday morning. It was then that the neighbour made the gruesome discovery. Following the discovery of her body, an extensive search began for her killer(s). This led police to a house in Mauluma village in the Nzhelele area where a

40-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday evening. Although the police did not indicate whether it was the farm worker they arrested, all indications are that it was him. “I cannot understand why he would do something like that. He had worked for her for so many years. He called her mom,” said Kim. Whether or not her daughter’s murder had anything to do with her outspokenness about farm attacks in South Africa, Kim said she does not know. “We will not be able to fix this broken land of ours,” said Kim bitterly, adding that her daughter was taken from her way to soon. “She and I were planning for the future safety of the family,” said Kim. By the time of going to press, the police had yet to confirm whether the suspect had appeared in court. (For more about Annette’s life, see article on page 2)

“Ek wil hê haar begrafnis moet eerder ‘n viering van haar lewe wees …” So het die 72-jarige Kim Labuschagne, ma van vermoorde Annette Kennealy, Woensdag aan die Zoutpansberger gesê. Te midde van bittere rou oor haar dogter se dood, onthou ma Kim ook die goeie tye. “Sy was ‘n sprankelende persoon met ‘n passie vir die lewe,” het Kim gesê. Annette en haar suster (ook Kim) is in Pretoria gebore, Annette op 24 April 1968 en Kim op 4 Mei 1970. Vandaar het die familie na die destydse Pietersburg verhuis waar pa Lappies Labuschagne as dokter gepraktiseer het. Aangesien beide ma Kim en pa Lappies in Zimbabwe grootgeword het, het hulle besluit om in 1971 na Louis Trichardt te verhuis om “nader aan die huis” te wees. Beide Annette en suster Kim het hul skoolloopbane in Louis Trichardt voltooi, eers by Laerskool Soutpansberg en daarna by Hoërskool Louis Trichardt. Dit was tydens haar Standerd 9 jaar, onthou ma Kim, dat die inwoners van Louis Trichardt almal kennis gemaak het met die pragtige jong Annette toe sy as ‘n destydse Mej. Soutpansberg gekroon is. Ná skool het Annette haar groot liefde nagejaag, naamlik die kunste, en verwerf sy haar graad in skoner kunste vanaf die Universiteit van Pretoria. Sy sou haar later in die voormalige Venda bevind, waar sy haar man, Martin, ontmoet het. Dit was liefde met die eerste oogopslag. “Hulle is gou getroud,” het ma Kim gesê. Hulle is saam na Zimbabwe en vandaar het ma Kim ‘n oproep ontvang dat hulle sommer daar voor die magistraat gaan trou. So het hulle twee troues gehad. Een

Deur die jare het Annette nie net vir haarself naam gemaak as ‘n uitsonderlik begaafde kunstenaar nie, maar ook iemand met ‘n passie vir die gemeenskap waarin sy lewe. “Sy het altyd gesê dit is my volk en moenie my volk kritiseer nie. My volk het gebloei vir Suid-Afrika,” het ma Kim gesê. Wat betref laasgenoemde was Annette baie uitgesproke op sosiale media oor veral plaasmoorde. Soveel te meer het die

Ek het ‘n spesiale vriendin verloor. My hart gaan uit na die familie en meer so aan Annette se

dogters, suster Kim en ma. Niemand behoort die wêreld so te verlaat nie. Soveel vrae onbeantwoord. Met tyd hoop ek dat dit beantwoord sal word en nog meer dat daar rustigheid in so baie mense se harte sal kom,” het Jacques Dinsdag aan die Zoutpansberger gesê. Jacques het gesê hy en Annette se vriendskap strek al bykans 40 jaar. “Ek ken Annette amper my hele lewe lank. Die dae toe ons saam in Laerskool Soutpansberg was, saam die hospitaal verken het terwyl ons pa’s besig was met hul roetine-ondersoeke. Ek onthou die eerste skildery wat jy vir my ma gegee het in 1986 genaamd Mozart. Jou toegewydheid tot die land en sy welstand, as opinie-skrywer, selfs as DA-raadslid by Makhado munisipaliteit sal onthou word deur baie. Jou sagte kant wanneer jy een van jou pragstukke laat opveil het ten bate van kankerpasiënte het harte gesteel in ons gemeenskap,” het Jacques gesê. Hy het bygevoeg dat Annette onthou sal word vir haar liefde vir die land, haar taal en die mense om haar. “Rus sag my vriendin,” het Jacques gesê. Jacques was een van talle wat ook op sosiale media hulde aan Annette gebring het. Teen druktyd was daar nog geen finale begrafnisreëlings getref nie. “Maar Annette sal langs haar pa op die familie plaas Hillside begrawe word. Dit sal egter eerder ‘n viering van haar lewe wees! Sy het gevra dat inwoners die sosiale media moet dophou wat betref finale reëlings oor die diens. “Die dood is die mees finale ding ooit. Dit is wat dit is. Ons moet besef ons lewens is nie in ons hande nie,” het ma Kim gesê.

Bekende boer en kerkman sterf na hartaanval tydens Parkrun Deur Andries van Zyl

Die Soutpansberg het Saterdag met leedwese kennis geneem van die skielike afsterwe van die 63-jarige mnr. Stefan Wilson. Hy is dood vanweë ‘n massiewe hartaanval te midde van sy deelname aan die weeklikse Parkrun. “Sy dood was te vinnig en onverwags,” het eggenote Mari Dinsdag aan die Zoutpansberger gesê. Sy dood was vir haar en hul dogters Athri (29) en Susan (25) nog ‘n onwerklikheid gewees. “Ek kan steeds nie glo hy is weg nie,” het Mari gesê. Stefan is ‘n boorling van die Karoo. Hy word op 3 Augustus 1956 op Williston gebore en voltooi ook sy skoolloopbaan daar. Ná skool verwerf hy ‘n graad in siviele ingenieurswese aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch (US), waarna hy sy twee jaar nasionale diensplig voltooi. In dié tyd bekwaam hy homself as offisier met die rang van luitenant. Stefan begin sy beroepsloopbaan by die destydse Waterwese in Kaapstad en vandaar word hy gesekondeer na die Wetenskaplike en Nywerheid Navorsings raad (WNNR) in Pretoria, om navorsing te doen vir ‘n MIng (meestersgraad in geotegniese ingenieurswese) wat hy ook aan die US behaal. Dit is hier waar hy sy vrou Mari (nooi Wessels) ontmoet. Die egpaar is in 1987 getroud, terwyl Stefan betrokke was by die konstruksie van die Uitkeerdam naby Somerset-Oos. Daarna is hy weer terug na Waterwese in Pretoria waar hy hom later aangesluit het as raadgewende ingenieur by ‘n in genieursfirma. In dié tyd behaal sy MBA. Om te boer was egter altyd in Stefan se bloed gewees. Die egpaar het in 1990

The plans of the Makhado Municipality to cancel the lease agreements of just about all the established sport clubs in town, may end up in lengthy fights. At this stage none of the clubs want to officially comment, as they argue they only heard about the plans via the press and no consultation whatsoever had taken place. During the March meeting of the Makhado Council a resolution was taken to try and terminate the 99-year lease agreements of eleven of the town’s amateur sport clubs. Prior to the meeting a legal opinion regarding this was obtained. The matter was referred to the relevant sub-committee to furnish the Council with valid reasons as to why the contracts should be terminated. The Council’s spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, was asked for more clarity, to which he responded: “(The) … move is aimed at achieving redress of past unjust agreements entered into with one main objective of excluding black people from participating in sporting facilities with white people. The motion is in the best interest of the public.” Bobodi said that the agreements were entered into during the period of 1993 and 1994, just at the dawn of the new constitutional dispensation. “The properties in question are government owned and the public must enjoy them without any prejudice emanating from race,

gender or belief,” said Bobodi. Representatives of all the clubs that Zoutpansberger spoke to were visibly annoyed when asked about the allegations of racism. Some described it as ignorance that is also highly offensive. The clubs all have open membership and several of the clubs have been running development programmes for decades. It seems as if the municipality clearly did not do their homework and lack understanding of how club membership works. “A club is not like a business or a property that you buy which then belongs to a certain person or group. The club belongs to the residents of the town,” one representative said. According to him this differs from year to year, as new people move into town and become active on club committees. Even the periods when the contracts were entered into, were disputed. Some of the clubs listed have contracts that were concluded after 1994 with the then Greater Louis Trichardt municipality. Council’s intention to try and alienate sport grounds met with a fair amount of scepticism. One popular theory is that a few officials and councillors have their own ulterior motives and the intention may be to sell off sports fields to developers. “This is just sad, seeing that the region has so few proper sport facilities. Instead of expanding on this and provide more facilities to residents, Council turn on the few existing ones,” one representative said.

On Saturday, 18 May, Ridgeway College held their annual fund raiser Forest Walk in the plantation just outside Louis Trichardt. Local students and other enthusiasts joined forces with the international organisation, 350.org, to walk for Climate Change. They continue to support this worthy cause as they stand in solidarity with the global community in taking responsibility for protecting and sustaining our beautiful planet earth. The first male in the 4km walk was Lufuno Mulaudzi with Ruhammah Debebe finishing as first female. First male to cross the line in the 8km walk was Nengwekhulu Ranwedzi, with Amy Cooper being the first female home in this category. Vir die tweede keer binne die bestek van drie weke het ‘n plaaslike familie ‘n geliefde aan die dood afgestaan. Nuus van die dood van Jan Mouton, ‘n lid van die SA Lugmag op Lugmagbasis (LMB) Makhado, minder as drie weke nadat hy sy vrou, Nedine, begrawe het, het baie met ongeloof en verbystering gelaat. Jan was verlede Donderdagaand op pad om sy seun, Jacques, te gaan besoek in Pretoria toe hy met sy motorfiets geval en voor ‘n motor beland het ‘n ent voor Polokwane op die N1. Dié het ongelukkig oor sy kop gery en hy is waarskynlik op slag dood. Jan het gewerk op LMB Makhado en het die rang van sersant-majoor gehad in die PSSM Hawk-afdeling. Sy belangstellings het verder gestrek as net sy werk en hy en Nedine was baie lief vir perdry.

Hulle het albei aan die basis se ruiterklub behoort, waar hulle ‘n leidende rol gespeel het. Nedine is bykans drie weke gelede oorlede na ‘n stryd teen kanker die afgelope paar jaar. Sy was vir ‘n hele aantal jare betrokke by die Zoutpansberg Privaathospitaal as boekhouer en almal daar het hoë waardering gehad vir haar nougesette, uitstekende werk. Jacques, Jan en Nedine se een seun, is ‘n bekende in die dorp vir sy kranige talent as musikant. Hy is tans in Pretoria woonagtig waar hy besig is om sy loopbaan te vestig. Die ander seun, Wynand, is in Thailand waar hy werk. Jan se begrafnis vind op Vrydag, 31 Mei, plaas vanuit die Volle Evangelie Kerk op die hoek van Burger- en Rissikstraat. Die diens begin om 10:00 en dit sal ‘n semi-militêre begrafnis wees.

Hierdie week, 25 jaar gelede

Louis Trichardt se inwoners was omtrent ontstoke toe die voetoorgang voor die poskantoor in Kroghstraat verwyder is. Dit het vreeslike ongerief veroorsaak - veral vir voetgangers wat dit moeilik vind om ver afstande te stap. Om van kruising na kruising te stap kan die gewone man op straat uitasem laat! Besighede in Kroghstraat het ‘n petisie opgestel om die raad te motiveer om die voetoorgang terug te plaas waar dit was en die destydse Adviesforum het die Stadsraad ook skriftelik versoek om weer ‘n voetoorgang in Kroghstraat aan te bring. Die voetoorgang is toe wel weer aangebring en deesdae pronk dit ook met verkeersligte om te verseker dat voetgangers die straat veilig oorsteek.

DMR grants landowners extension to comment By Andries van Zyl

Landowners in the Bandelierkop area have more time to comment on the proposed prospecting-right application submitted by Red Kite Environmental solutions. The proposed prospecting-rights application is for the farms Onlust 339 LS, Leeuwdrift 342 LS, Waerkum 302 LS, Welbedacht 346 LS, Vergenoeg 347 LS, Arras 1222 LS and Welkomthuis 343 LS, as well as portions of the farms Grutz 308 LS and Annaskraal 341 LS. The proposed project area is 34 km south-west of Louis Trichardt and 20 km north of Bandelierkop. The extent of the area proposed to be prospected equates to 9 951.20 ha and the minerals to be prospected for will be chromite, nickel, copper and cobalt. “Following prospecting, the drilled holes and disturbed areas will be rehabilitated,” stated Red Kite in their presentation. The proposed project entails three diamond drill holes up to a maximum depth of approximately 400m, as well as the establishment of three site camps (432m³ total), including an equipment storage area (100m³ total), drill sites (75m³ total), and ablution facilities (portable toilets) (6m³ total). Clearance of vegetation (432m³ total) will also be required for the establishment of the drill sites, site camp and ablution facilities. Red Kite held a meeting with landowners about the proposed prospecting-right application on 24 April at the Adam’s Apple Hotel. From the onset, however, the meeting was characterised by confusion. Landowners did not know whether they attended an information session or an actual public-participation meeting as required by law. Numerous important documents were also not made available to all the affected landowners, which included a full copy of the basic assessment report (BAR). Some affected landowners only received notice that they could register as an affected party after the closing date for registration of 10 April. “It is my opinion that interested and affected parties have not received moral or ethical fairness in respect of public participation,” said one landowner, Mr Kenneth Ball. He was referring to

the method and effectiveness of the notifications by the environmental consultants (Red Kite), as well as inconsistencies in the information provided to interested and affected parties. Following the 24 April meeting, Red Kite themselves applied for an extension of time to the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) for affected parties to study and respond to the BAR. Last week, Red Kite send out an email informing all interested and affected parties that an extension was granted. “This email serves as notification that the DMR has granted an additional 50 days to finalise the BAR and relevant supporting documentation, including the Public Participation Report. The Zumba session will also serve as a fundraiser for the Stabilis Treatment Centre in Pretoria. “Armando’s family and close friends decided that the anniversary date of his passing should be an absolute celebration of the flamboyant, loving, caring, most-loved person he was,” says Magda Pretorius. They decided to use this special event to raise funds for Stabilis Treatment Centre, “a facility which helped Armando overcome some of the adversities he faced,” she says. The Zumba session starts at 17:15 at the Kiepersol venue at the Dutch Reformed Church in Erasmus Street. “Your entrance fee is a cash donation towards our fundraiser,” says Magda. Those who cannot attend the day, but still want to make a contribution, can do so by contributing and donating to Stabilis via an EFT payment. The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane, has published the Draft National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for public comment in Government Gazette 42446 (Notice No 644). The adaptation strategy has been developed in line with South Africa’s commitment to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change to introduce measures to adapt to the effects of climate change while achieving the stabilisation of greenhouse gas emissions and limiting temperature increases to 1.5°C. “The development of the strategy is central toward the attainment of the National Climate Change Response Policy objective of effectively managing the inevitable climate change impacts through interventions that build and sustain South Africa’s social, economic and environmental resilience and emergency response capacity,” said the Department of Environmental Affairs in a press statement.

According to the department, evidence exists that extreme weather events in South Africa are increasing, with heatwave conditions found to be more likely, dry-spell durations lengthening slightly and rainfall intensity increasing. “Increases in annual-average near-surface temperatures are projected to occur over large parts of South Africa, including the western interior and northern parts of South Africa. Climate zones across the country are already shifting, ecosystems and landscapes are being degraded, veld fires are becoming more frequent, and overused natural terrestrial and marine systems are under stress,” said the department. They added that South Africa is therefore taking immediate action in planning for, and responding to, intensified climate change impacts. “There is increasing international recognition that strong and sustainable socio-economic development can reduce vulnerability to climate change and ensure resilience. Adaptation to

climate change presents South Africa with an opportunity to transform the economy, strengthen the social and spatial fabric, and become and build a climate resilient society. The National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy (NCCAS) provides a common vision of climate change adaptation and climate resilience for the country, and outlines priority areas for achieving this vision,” said the department. Endurance rider makes Soutpansberg proud Horse Riding

Former Louis Trichardt resident Lanel van Niekerk (27) is still making the Soutpansberg proud by not only winning the recent South African International Challenge (SAIC) endurance race over 160km, but also setting up a new South African record for the race. Many residents may remember Lanel best under her maiden name, Van Niewenhuizen. She and her horse, a mare called Jozami Zanica, competed in the race on 27 April at the Bona Bona Game Lodge near Klerksdorp. Lanel and Zanica also attempted the race in 2018, but had to withdraw from the event after Zanica injured her tendon after 100 km. “We were very disappointed but made sure we took the correct measures to treat Zanica’s injury so she could come back again in 2019,” said Lanel. The start to the 2019 SAIC was a nervous one as Zanica was rested till December 2018. “She only participated in one race the beginning of the year, and I was not sure how she was going to react if we put so much pressure on her after the long rest to recover from her injury. About a month before SAIC, Zanica got hurt on the farm where another horse fell into her back legs while training. Keeping the faith, we believed everything was going to work out.” Everything worked out well for Lanel and Zanica from the start of the race. “I was behind the front horses after the second leg by about 10min. I

was only able to catch up to them by 120km. After the 120km loop, a vote was called on my horse, as she was not 100% sound. With her second trot out, she was fine and we found something under her pads, which caused a pressure point,” said Lanel.
