Minister of Police and police captain ordered to pay over half a million in damages for unlawful arrest

By Andries van Zyl In yet another successful claim for unlawful arrest against the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, the Minister of Police and a police captain this time have to fork out over half a million rand in damages.

The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria handed down judgement in favour of 32-year-old Mr Rassie van der Laarse, an employee of Nomad Freight Musina (Pty) Ltd, on Friday, 18 October.

Van der Laarse was unlawfully arrested by Capt.

Edward Sello Sekelele (second defendant in the case), an SAPS captain stationed at the police’s border control area at Beit Bridge, in May 2010. He was detained for almost three days in what Judge A J Eberson described as “horrifying circumstances” in his judgement. He had harsh words with regard to Sekelele in his judgement. “It is common cause that the plaintiff [Van der Laarse] was treated very cruelly and under horrifying circumstances from the moment of his arrest, which took place in the presence of acquaintances of his, by the second defendant and his subordinates. He was detained in a hopelessly overcrowded container under filthy conditions. He was arrested by the second respondent [Sekelele] who acted as if he was power drunk and in a disgraceful display to all those who held what was going on. The Court can only hope that the matter somewhere along the line receives attention from some senior officer, for the conduct of the second defendant cannot be left unpunished and he is particularly unsuited to be an officer and to be in charge anywhere,” Judge Eberson said.

Van der Laarse was arrested without a warrant

by Sekelele on Friday, 21 May, 2010 in the natural area at the border on a host of charges relating to the Fire Arms Control Act. Van der Laarse brought

weapons into South Africa for a client. Most of the weapons were licenced in South Africa, but some were only licensed in Zimbabwe. At no stage did Van der Laarse try and deceive the police about the weapons kept in a safe in his vehicle. He had all the necessary documentation for all the weapons, never left the neutral area and was in the process of sorting out the paper work. For three days prior to his arrest, he tried to convince the police to hold the weapons in safe keeping, but they refused.

Van der Laarse was arrested at 16:40 on the said Friday by Sekelele, who blatantly refused to look at or acknowledge the weapons’ documentation.

First Van der Laarse was detained at the Beit Bridge SAPS’s facility, from where he was moved to the Musina SAPS. Here he was detained in a 6m x 2m container, together with 23 other detainees in 40°C temperatures until Monday, 24 May, 2010 at 09:00, when he was finally released on bail of R3 000.

During his detainment in the container, Van der Laarse was robbed of all his personal belongings by fellow detainees. All the detainees had to sleep like sardines packed next to each other, unable to even bend their knees and their heads and feet pushing up against the sides of the container. Due to the overcrowded conditions, three detainees had to sleep sitting upright in the overflowing toilet in the container. Prior to this, when Van der Laarse was first detained at Beit Bridge, he had a bench pulled out from underneath him by police, who told him: “You don’t deserve to sit!”

Following his arrest, a court battle ensued. The matter was provisionally withdrawn by the state prosecutor in Musina on 17 March 2011 and finally withdrawn by the senior prosecutor in Thohoyandou on 8 November 2011.

Damages claim awarded againts SAPS (Contd from P1) In the meantime (October 2010), Van der Laarse had already issued a summons against the Minister of Police (first defendant) and Sekelele, wherein he claimed R200 000 in respect of loss of liberty, R150 000 in respect of contumelia (a lack of politeness) and injury to his reputation, R58 310.05 in respect of legal costs to defend himself in court until the matter was withdrawn on 17 March, and R5 851.96 for legal costs regarding his bail application.

In his judgement last week, Judge Eberson finally awarded Van der Laarse general damages in the amount of R280 000,

and R58 310.05 and R5 851.96 respectively in respect of his legal cost incurred, bringing the amount payable to R344 162.01, with interest thereon (about R160 000) at the rate of 15,5% per annum, calculated from 20 October 2010 (the date upon which the SAPS acknowledged receipt of Van der Laarse’s summons against the two defendants). Both the Minister of Police and Sekelele were also ordered to pay the cost of the action, jointly and severally, payment by the one absolving the other.

“The amounts claimed by the plaintiff are, for all intents and purposes, reasonable when compared to the awards made in

other cases, especially when the gruesomeness of what the police officers did to the plaintiff and the circumstances under which he was detained are taken into account,” Judge Eberson said.

In most cases, interest is only charged on the awarded amount for the day of judgement. In this case, interest was charged from the day the SAPS acknowledged receipt of the summons against them.

“This rarely happens. From this I deduct Judge Eberson’s clear disgust for the actions of Sekelele,” said Mr André Naude of Coxwell, Steyn, Vise & Naudé, who acted as Van der Laarse’s attorneys.

At its annual general meeting on 10 October, Mr Wally Schultz mentioned the highlights and lowlights of the year in his chairperson’s report. Schultz was unanimously re-elected as chairperson for the next term.

Highlights included the two High Court orders aimed at getting water to the town. The first court order was mentioned as significant because it was deadline driven and the second court order was called a landmark victory, since it could lead to holding the municipal manager accountable in his personal capacity. A highlight was the debushing of the Albasini pipeline to detect leaks, after serious engagement, and the electrification of the new boreholes in town.

On the dedicated complaint line on Facebook, 1 113 complaints had been given attention to. One of the best moments was the day in June when the reservoirs were 100% full after running low for years. Getting the co-operation of the municipal manager of Vhembe, Mr Masala Makumule, was a highlight, as was liaison with co-operative people like Mr Moses Shibambu of Vhembe’s communication department and Mr David Mukosi, Vhembe’s Makhado water services manager.

“We had two trains of thought in AfriForum. The one was ‘nail them and put them in jail’ the second was ‘use the court order as a whip and engage with them’,” said Schultz who chose the second train of thought “with the backing of Afriforum head office.” Schultz added that a court order in itself did not bring water or debushing of the pipeline. “It is so frustrating to have won a court order but still things don’t happen. I found that positive engagement is the answer. Every time I engaged, it produced results. I had opposition from some committee members, and some people in town verbally abused me like you can’t believe it. I was called a %@##&-boetie, especially by those phoning late at night. For those who think I’m soft on Vhembe, there’s no ‘tjom-

mie-tjommie’, but I think I have achieved something. I have built up a trust. When I phoned, I had positive results. Vhembe largely met the court order and I believe it is because of engagement,” Schultz said.

Schultz said that subsequent problems with the water did appear, especially with the aged Albasini pipeline and added that he believed there was even a plan for the ageing pipeline through positive engagement.

The lowlights included the dire security situation, where cables and expensive pump station equipment were vandalized and stolen, the disappointing opening ceremony of new boreholes that were not in working order, the town that was drowning in sewage and the little time spent on proper membership drives.

Step into a bygone era of train travel With the Bosvelder train now offering sleeper accommoda­ tion once more, passengers can once again step into the bygone era of train travel.

Mainline Passenger Services in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), a division of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), recently introduced coupé and family compartments that are not only comfortable but also safe for the Bosvelder train. The Bosvelder runs between Musina and Johannesburg, twice a week, on

Thursdays and Sundays. On Wednesdays and Fridays, the train travels from Johannesburg back to Musina.

Family compartments can accommodate families of up to six members. The coupé compartments can accomodate up to three people, and are perfect for couples. The compartments offer bedding, a washing basin, overhead lighting, and secure locks. Security on the Bosvelder has also been increased to ensure that passengers are always safe.

Die munisipaliteit beskou egter die onwettige gepeuter met die elektrisiteitsmeter in ‘n baie ernstige lig, ingevolge Artikel 26 van die Standaard Nasionale Elektrisiteitsbywette, en het die meter verwyder volgens Artikel 21 van dieselfde wet. Die boete vir peuter aan die meter is meer as R10 000.

Ná die hele kragboks verwyder is, het Delport navraag by die munisipaliteit gedoen om ‘n voorafbetaalde kragtoestel te installeer. “Hulle het vir

Mutshinyali het die erns van die saak van on­ wet­tige koppeling van elektrisiteit aan Delport verduidelik en gesê dat dit algemeen voorkom en dat sulke elektrisiëns doelbewus onwettig optree.

“Dit het voorgekom asof julle die sisteem probeer ontduik het. Die fout wat die munisipaliteit gemaak het, was om jou toe te laat om van konvensionele krag na voorafbetaalde krag oor te skakel, terwyl daar ‘n uitstaande boete is omdat daar onwettig aan die sisteem gepeuter is,” het Mutshinyali gesê. Die munisipaliteit het van­ deesweek gereageer op vrae rondom die totale verval van die munisipale stortingsterrein.

Toegangshekke by die terrein was voorverlede week gesluit vir die publiek, en radelose inwoners het toe maar begin om hul vullis voor die hek en langs die Vondelingpad te stort. Verlede week Helanie Harmse, Graad 12-leerling van het daar ‘n berig op die voorblad Hoërskool Louis Trichardt, ontvang ‘n balkie van die Zoutpansberger hieroor vir diens nadat sy vier jaar as noodhelper diens verskyn. gelewer het.

Dit is waarom die hek gesluit was,” het Bobodi Dinsdag in ‘n e-pos gesê. Hy wou hom nie uitlaat oor bewe­rings dat munisipale amptenare werknemers op die terrein opdrag gegee het om die hekke te sluit en inwoners opdrag gegee het om hulle vullis langs die Vondelingpad te gooi nie.

Bobodi het wel erken dat daar munisipale personeel en sekuriteitswagte daardie dag teenwoordig was op die terrein.

Sep­tember elke keer aan die brand gesteek het as vullis begin ophoop het, is deur Bobodi geïg­ noreer. Daar is ‘n toenemende persepsie dat dit die munisipali­ teit self is wat die vullis aan die brand steek, omdat hulle sukkel om die hoeveelheid vullis te beheer.

Verder het Bobodi gesê dat die nuwe stortingsterrein nie meer aan die einde van Oktober aan die diensverskaffer oorhandig gaan word nie. Hy het erken dat die tender vir die nuwe terrein eers gedurende die eerste week van Oktober goedgekeur is.

“Die ontwikkeling van die [nuwe] terrein sal binnekort plaasvind, ná die oorhandiging daarvan, wat volgende maand sal geskied,” het Bobodi gesê. ‘n Dag na die berig in die Zoutpansberger verskyn het, is daar opgemerk dat ‘n tru-grawer die pad na die stortingsterrein gaan oopstoot het.

Ex Aussie deputy prime minister visits region The former deputy prime minister of Austral­ ia was among high­profile guests visiting the Soutpansberg to explore sites associated with Breaker Morant, the Bushveldt Carbineers (BVC) and the Anglo Boer War. “Of about eight previous tour groups from Australia, this was certainly the highest-profile group of Australians to do this tour. What a receptive, appreciative and pleasurable Australian group to guide,” said local historian, author and specialist tour guide Charles Leach after concluding his part of the Australians’ South African tour. Leach believes that the former deputy prime minister, Tim Fischer, and most others in the group have gone back “with a revised impression of the BVC, compared to the one they came here with”.

Fischer, Australia’s deputy prime minister from 1996 to 1999, is a passionate rail historian and the tour guide of “a journey of discovery in South Africa to learn about the country’s culture, colonial past and Australian military links, including Harry ‘Breaker’ Morant.” Tim’s tour included “two classic luxury rail journeys from Pretoria to Cape Town and Durban to Pretoria, through historic areas, national parks and game parks, all with spectacular scenery and wildlife.”

On 6 October, Leach took the group to Rev Heese’s grave and to the actual room in the house in Hans van Rensburg Street (Polokwane) where the Court Martial of Breaker Morant and the others was held in 1902.

“This visit certainly impacted on several members of the group because it is not normally included in my tours and the Australian films and documentaries generally show that the officers were tried in a sort of dingy shed, not in one of the finest old homes of Pietersburg,” Leach said. The group visited the concentration camp cemetery in Polokwane “for a very good and unexpected visual impression of the effects of the ‘scorched-earth

policy’ and the ‘mopping-up’ operations that the BVC were involved with.”

Fort Hendrina and graves and monuments from Valdezia back towards Bandelierkop were visited the next day. Visiting the railway station in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) on Monday (7th), railway fanatic Tim was amazed to hear that the first train to come in would be on Thursday! On the 8th, Ronnie Visser, descendant of the BVC victims, joined the group for breakfast at the Lalapanzi Hotel.

“One of the ladies told me later that it was a mind-blowing experience to actually shake the hand of a descendant of a man executed (murdered!) by her countrymen!” said Leach. The rest of the day was spent in the Moketsi, Letaba Valley, Medingen and Modjadjiskloof areas, which are included in the Skirmishes tour.

The group was overwhelmed with true South African hospitality.

“What impacted on me was the variety of generous comments made by Tim and his group concerning the preservation of our heritage, access to graves and monuments on private land and even the balanced nature of some of the text engraved on the monuments,” said Leach.

Fischer wrote the foreword for Nick Bleszynski’s book Shoot straight you Bastards! and he was also part of the delegation that presented the first ‘pardon petition’ (attempting to gain a pardon for Breaker Morant and Handcock) to Whitehall in London some four years ago.

“I have no doubt that they return to Australia as true ambassadors to what really happened here,” said Leach.

Leach expresses sincere thanks to each and everyone who contributed to the success of this significant tour, including Hansie van Schalkwyk, Dirk Badenhorst, George Short, all landowners, and Laurie Bannatyne (for the chemical toilet).

Die nuwe hoof van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt is mnr. Theo Muller, wat sedert 1 Oktober in waarnemende hoedanigheid ‘n goedgevestigde onderwyserskorps by die skool aanvoer.

Muller is die afgelope 24 jaar aan die skool verbonde en ken die skool deur en deur. Hy was die afgelope vyf jaar adjunkhoof.

Muller sê dat dit sy visie is om die skool as ‘n waardegedrewe skool te vestig en dat hy reeds ernstig daaraan werk. “Ek wil graag toesien dat daar beter dissipline by die skool heers en dit is waarom waardes so belangrik is. Dissipline moet uiteindelik van binne kom en nie slegs deur baklei afgedwing word nie,” sê Muller, wat ernstig is oor sy taak om die skool vorentoe te neem en ook ‘n goeie samewerking met die ouers en die gemeenskap daar te stel. “Ons wil graag die skool vorentoe neem en dieselfde en beter prestasies as in die verlede bereik. Sport is baie belangrik, maar moet in balans met die akademie en ander fasette wees. Die akademie is die heel belangrikste faset,” sê Muller. Verder sê hy dat die skool reeds gekies het om godsdiens as waarde uit te dra. Dit is vir hom ook belangrik om ‘n gesonde balans tussen die verskillende kulture te handhaaf.

Muller behou steeds kontak met die klaskamer en gee tans Ingenieurs Grafiese Ontwerp vir die Graad 12’s.

He was appointed as a provincial spokesperson in the police’s communication offices in Polokwane. He was the local spokesperson for seven years. Last Thursday, the newspapers handed Sadike a small framed token of appreciation. Sadike thanked the Makhado SAPS for their team work, as well as the station commander, Lt Col Francis Ramovha, and his management team. “I will always be indebted because it is these men and women who go beyond their call by every minute and every hour,” said Sadike. “It never crossed my mind that the little efforts I put behind my work can be recognised or whether someday an editor of a newspaper can deem it fitting to give me a pat on the shoulder. Time again to submit your winning photos It is once again time for the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror’s very popular calendar photo competition.

The region’s photographers will have until 15 November to submit their entries. This year’s prize money totals R8 400, with 12 winning pictures to be chosen for each of the year’s months. Winning entries will be published in an A2-format 2014 calendar, which will be used by the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror for marketing purposes.

The calendars will also be sold to the public at a minimal fee.

Only high-resolution photos of subjects unique to the Soutpansberg and surrounding areas will be considered for the competition. Wildlife photos are welcome, although the newspaper group would like to see more entries depicting the region’s cultural heritage, its people and landscape. The competition is limited to five entries per photographer, which should preferably be submitted in digital format.

Cellphone or postcard-size photos will not be considered for the competition.

All entries must clearly indicate who the photographer is, their contact details, where and when the photo was taken and what camera was used.

Three more accolades for local hairstylist Dynamic hairstylist Connie de Sousa of Makha­ do (Louis Trichardt) received three accolades over the past two months.

Connie won the black-and-white photo competition of Intercoiffure Mondial’s Oceana region with the fuzzy hairstyle of her beautiful local young hair model, Lize Simon (17). The theme for the photo was “Celebration” and the winning photo was taken

by Madeleen van den Berg of Maya-Lee Photo­ graphy, also based in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

The Oceana regional hair congress took place in Cape Town from 12 to 14 October. South Africa, Australia and Nieu Zealand form the Oceana region of Intercoiffure Mondial, one of the most influential organizations in hairdressing in the world. A hairstylist becomes a member of Intercoiffure by invitation. “With over 4 000 innovative stylists in 55 countries worldwide, the culture of Intercoiffure is as diverse as it is vibrant. Founded in Paris more than 80 years ago, Intercoiffure Mondial continues

to elevate the industry to greater standards with their genuine love of the craft and their dedication as educators,” says Jas Jhally, Australian fashion director of Intercoiffure Mondial Oceana.

Connie did not attend the Oceana hair congress expecting to win anything. She was just enjoying herself. Just before the awards function commenced, she was still styling the hair of an editor of a hairdresser magazine who forgot to bring her hairbrush along. “We are such a lovely family, we keep connected all the time. When they suddenly read my name, I was stunned and tears flowed, all the more because my hair model’s mum had recently passed away. I always told her mum we should use her daughter as a hair model. I am so glad I asked Madeleen to give her mom the photo in time for her to see it,” said Connie, who received a glass trophy as overall winner.

Connie realized later that the judges had something in mind when they judged the photos. “The fluffy, frizzy trend is very much in at the moment.

You could see that at the show, where a lot of hairstyles were not smooth. The style I did on Lize happened to be just that,” said Connie.

Overwhelmed by the first accolade, Connie did not quite realize that she was being called to the stage a second time and received a framed certificate, indicating that she had won a prestigious award. There are four categories of excellence in these “Hall of fame” awards: the new generation award, a fellowship award, the salon of the year award and the hall of fame award. Connie received a fellowship award.

In the meantime, another glass trophy arrived at Connie’s salon, C Jay’s. That was for a second place in Goldwell’s global Colorzoom Challenge 13 with the theme “Beautify,” where Connie used Connie´s winning entry in the black-and-white soft pastel shades on blonde hair model Cherise photo competition with the fuzzy hairstyle of her Muller. Please book SPCA-boarding in advance The SPCA in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) reminds pet own­ ers who wish to board their pets (cats and dogs) at the kennels during the December holidays to please book in advance.

Bookings can only be made between 08:00 and 16:00 with Lawrence on 082 965 5151 and in the evening between 18:30 and 19:00 with Bea at 082 424 5712 or 015 516 0412. Mere phone messages or messages with kennel staff other than Lawrence or Bea will not be accepted.

All cats and dogs must be inoculated, dewormed, bathed or dipped before coming into the kennels. Proof of yearly inoculations, as well as rabies

inoculation, must be produced.

Pets must be inoculated at least ten days or longer before they are brought in. If a pet is on medication while boarding, Lawrence and Bea must be made aware of this. The boarding fees per animal per day are R40 per dog and R30 per cat. or people who intend leaving their pets behind at home during holiday, adequate arrangements should be made with a reliable person to care for them, taking into account that there will be fireworks during the season.

The office hours at the SPCA are from 08:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday and from 08:00 to 13:00 on Saturday. The office is closed on Sundays and on public holidays.

People who bring dogs in for boarding must see that they are in before closing time. People who have dogs boarding over weekends will have to fetch them on Monday unless arrangements are made before the time.

The SPCA is also in need of books and magazines, as well as jumble for their regular jumble sales. It can be dropped off at the kennels between 08:00 in the mornings till 16:00. The SPCA also does recycling of glass bottles, newspapers, magazines, plastic, tin cans and office paper.

S Alhoewel die jongspan van Babbelbekkies by Tshikondeni nog nie regtig die begrip van borskanker verstaan nie, het hulle almal verlede Vrydag pienk klere aangetrek om aan mense wat aan borskanker ly, te dink en vir hulle te bid. Dit is deel van hul bydrae tot Borskankermaand (Oktober).

In vandeesweek se episode oor die lewe van Daisy, begin sy behoorlik nesskrop en haar besending hoenders arriveer. Sy begin uitvind dat die lewe hier in die bos op die land se noordelike grense ongenaakbaar is, maar sy glo die projekte wat sy aanpak sal haar help oorleef.

ie hoenders kom met ‘n stowwerige geleent­ heid agterop ‘n groen Mahindra by Daisy aan.

Vir Daisy is dit Krismis - sy verwelkom elkeen van die agt geveerdes asof hulle die vreemdelinge is waarna sy elke Sondag sesuur verlang.

Voor Die Groot Trek het Daisy verstom ver­ neem dat hoenders nie soos hulle wilde neefs en niggies hulle toevlug na bome neem nie en snags in veilige hokke moet slaap. Daisy het inderhaas ‘n interior tydskrif geraadpleeg wat stap-vir-stap wys hoe om ‘n hoenderhok vir ‘n stadstuin te bou. Eintlik het die artikel gegaan oor daktuine wat orals in stede mode word en die planne was vir ‘n klein konserwatorium waarin jy ontwerpersblare en -kruie kon groei.

Met geringe aanpassings kon dit egter omskep word in luukse akkommodasie vir eksotiese pluimvee ...

Daisy het met primitiewe gereedskap, twee­ de­handse boumateriale en baie feministiese durf die projek aangepak. Vir dae aaneen spartel en timmer sy, tot groot vermaak van die Bosbewo­ ner, onder die Mashatuboom in die stof.

“Jy weet, Daisy, as jy nou nie so hardekwas was om alles self te wil doen nie, was die werk al klaar. Dis nou al die derde dag wat ek ons aan die lewe moet hou met jaffles en koffie en die enigste vordering is die kleurvolheid van jou woordeskat wanneer jou vingers in die pad van die hamer kom!” mor hy.

“Kyk jy maar net uit vir daai slang wat gister­ aand in jou Landcruiser ingeklim het,” kap sy terug. “Ons moet môre Seinheuwel toe ry om e-posse te stuur en oproepe te maak en ek is heel­temal te jonk om noual die Pêrelpoorte te betree!”

Uiteindelik staan die hok. Daar is min aan die konstruksie wat herinner aan die oorspronk­like planne, maar uiteindelik moet selfs die Bos­ bewoner toegee dat dit die basiese doel sal dien.

Tot Daisy se verbasing is hy die een wat trots vir die hoenderkarweier vertel dat sy die hok heelte­ mal alleen gebou het en kyk net hoe snoesig lyk die neste!

Daisy verlustig haar aan die bont skrophoen­ ders. Opgewonde betrek sy die Bosbewoner en die karweier by die uitkies van die name. Elkeen onthou uit hulle kinderjare ‘n geliefde troet­ elhoender en dit ontaard in ‘n prettige, lawwe aktiwiteit. Die henne is maklik – daar móét ‘n bruin Bessie wees en ‘n histeriese Hester. Dan kom angstige Antjie, gevolg deur Dowwe Dolla en Suzuki. (Moenie vra nie nie, g’n mens weet hoe werk ‘n man se kop nie!)

Die hane verg sober denke, hoofsaaklik omdat hulle net twee is en omdat dit algemene kennis is dat mens ligkens met enige man se naam en reputasie moet werk. Daar word koffie gedrink en jaffles geëet terwyl die hoendertjies hulle nuwe stellasie uittoets. Een na die ander naam word uitgeryg net soos in die storie van Repelsteeltjie. Uiteindelik is daar twee name – die haan met die Chuck Norris houding en die vere langs sy gevaarlike spore word Drachma gedoop. Net omdat dit so ‘mean’ klink. Die ander haan se kam is deurslaggewend – hy loer

agterdogtig onder die formidabele rooi gedoente uit en dadelik sien Daisy hom in ‘n blinker­ wit kostuum met bell bottoms en hoor sy die polsende klanke van ‘Blue Suede Shoes’. Elvis, sonder enige twyfel.

Met ‘n hart wat oorloop van blydskap oor die nuwe troeteldiere gaan voer Daisy die hoenders teen sononder. Sy sing in die skuimbad, bekyk haar gebreekte naels en blou duime ongestoord en ewe blymoedig maak sy ‘n gangbare weer­gawe van ‘n pizza vir aandete. Kort na agt skakel sy haar rekenaar af en rol sy haar wit beddegoed oop op die bank. So ‘n lekker produktiewe dag, glimlag sy behaaglik toe die Bosbewoner die ligte afskakel ...

Kwart oor agt begin ‘n haan kraai. Toe nog een.

Ligte gaan aan en die Bosbewoner gaan loop ‘n draai by die hoenderhok. Maar die henne is rustig, daar is nie gevaar nie.

Halftien begin ‘n haan kraai. Toe nog een.

Die eerste een ken al die rympie, die tweede een spring goed weg maar halfpad deur raak hy uit stoom uit.

Net voor een begin die proses van vooraf. Die tweede haan klink vaak. Vieruur word Daisy wakker toe die eerste haan met entoesiasme die vyfde keer ‘n nuwe dag aankondig. Sy raak nie weer aan die slaap nie.

Teen dagbreek maak Daisy die Bosbewoner wakker met koffie. “Het jy lekker geslaap, Dai­ sy?” glimlag hy.

“Al wat ek by jou wil weet,” sê Daisy met stywe lippies, “is of jy geroosterde hoender of hoenderpastei wil eet vanaand?”

Die Weg, die Waarheid en die Lewe

aar is miljoene mense in die wêreld wat nie ‘n huis het om in te lewe nie. Daarom, as ons ‘n dak oor ons koppe het, kos in ons maag en klere aan ons liggaam, behoort ons dankbaar te wees teenoor God vir Sy goedheid. As jy weergebore is moet jy God gedurig dank en loof vir Sy gawe van redding.

God sê vir Abram om die veiligheid van sy huis in Ur te verlaat en na ‘n vreemde land te trek.

In vers 7 lees ons God belowe aan Abram dat sy nageslag in die land Kanaän sal woon. Sy gehoorsaamheid aan God was ‘n stap van geloof.

Abraham was een van die voorouers van die Here Jesus Christus. (Matt.

1:2).

Alhoewel Abraham geen grond besit het nie, het hy geweet God sal Sy belofte gestand doen deur die land Kanaän aan sy nageslag te gee. Meer nog, Abraham en al God se kinders verlang na ons hemelse tuiste wat aan almal beloof word wat vir God liefhet en geloof in Jesus Christus het.

Ons almal is pelgrims op aarde.

As jy ‘n Christen is, is die wêreld nie jou tuiste nie. Ons ewige tuiste is die nuwe hemel en die nuwe aarde. Die land van geregtigheid waar ons Jesus van aangesig tot aangesig sal sien.

Mag ons meer en meer daaraan dink.

Dink aan jou permanente tuiste, waar God woon. Hebreërs 11:13.

Hierdie vier hokkiespelers van Laerskool Louis Trichardt het Limpopokleure verwerf na afloop van die finale hokkieproewe wat op 5 Oktober op Groblersdal plaasgevind het. Van links na regs is Ruan van Tonder (O/12), Franco Knoetze (O/11) en twee O/12-hokkiespelers, Minelise Reynders en Alida du Preez.

Die groep meisies is krieketspelers van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt wat erkenning vir hul krieketprestasies ontvang het. Voor is die spelers wat erekleure vir krieket verwerf het en in die middel en agter is die spelers wat balkies ontvang het.

Me. Theresa du Toit, ma van Cobus du Toit, het ‘n fiets vir Laerskool Messina se Graad 7 fonds geskenk. Die fiets is uitgeloot en die trotse wenner was Abrie Whelan. “Baie dankie vir almal wat deel geneem het en me. Du Toit vir die skenking,” sê die skool. Hoërskool Eric Louw in Musina het op 9 Oktober die interhoër swemgala vir kleinskole aangebied. Die skole wat deelgeneem het was Eric Louw, Louis Trichardt (LTT), Stanford Lake College (SLC), Pepps en Heuwelkruin.

Die Louwtjies het uit die staanspoor die medaljes ingepalm en uiteindelik met die louere weggestap. Hanley Wildlife Services het die medaljes geborg. Die twee skole wat deurgedring het na die Top 10 skole swemgala op 12 Oktober was die Louwtjies en Stanford Lake College. Die Louwtjies het ook dankie gesê vir Hope Bricks wat die pragtige hempies geborg het en Messina Apteek wat die kleurvolle swempette geborg het. Afgeneem is die wenners van die 50m rugslag tydens die interhoër.

Hierdie groepie is die top swemmers van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt na afloop van die interhuisswemgala wat op 17 September by die swembad van Laerskool Soutpansberg plaasgevind het.

Voor, van links na regs, is Daniél Coetzee (senior victor ludorum) en Amorien Venter (senior victrix ludorum). Agter is Riané Prinsloo (junior victrix ludorum) en Benco Ahlers (junior victor ludorum).

Cyclists excell at Simpson MTB Race Some of the Soutpansberg’s adventurous cyclists took on the Simpson Motors Phalaborwa Cross Country Mountain Bike Race over the past weekend, and clinched podium victories.

In the junior men’s category, the podium was dominated by local cyclists. CP van Wyk, cycling for Team PSG Cyling, took first place, with team mate Christiaan Roos second and Marco Roets third. Their fastest laps were respectively 00:15:01.635, 00:15:57.949 and 00:18:37.624 over four laps.

Another local cyclist who stood on the podium was Nico Geldenhuys. He took second place in the men’s sub- veteran category. His fastest lap time was 00:16:15.991.

Afterwards, there was also the Noon-to-Moon cross country race for teams. CP and Christiaan from Team PSG once again took top honours, when they completed their total laps in a time of 05:56:10.943.The second place was won by the team of Stanley Thompson in a time of 05:57:59.634.

Eerstes kraai koning tydens Sewes-dag Bo: Louis Trichardt se eerste rugbyspan, af­ge­neem die afgelope Saterdag tydens die Limpopo Sewes Kampioenskappe. Die finale wedstryde is op die dorp se rugbyvelde beslis en Louis Trichardt se eerstespan het bo-aan die punteleer, met 28 punte, as wenners uit die stryd getree. Hulle het nie een van hul wedstryde verloor nie. Dank is uitgespreek teenoor die borge van die dag, Elegant Fuel en GM Imperial.

Wiehan Uys nael met die bal vir die doellyn, terwyl ´n mede-speler van Louis Trichardt se tweedespan hom probeer duik. Hy het vir Louis Trichardt se eerstespan uitgedraf tydens Saterdag se Limpopo Sewesruby Kampioenskappe.
