The sewage plant in Malherbe Street, Louis Trichardt, has allegedly been non-operational since being vandalised in December 2021, and despite several requests, no plans have been made to have it restored.
Toe ek myself weer kom kry, toe is hulle langs my by die deur met gewere in my gesig,” het Welthagen gesê. 076 424 Welthagen7659.is bly hy leef. “As ek ‘n wapen by my gehad het, het hulle my doodgeskiet.

DA reports Makhado and Vhembe over collapsed sewage plant
By Bernard Chiguvare Mr Fanie Havinga, the chairperson of the Soutpansberg District Agricultural Union, is making an urgent appeal to farmers in the Vhembe District not to move their cattle from one district to another, as most parts around the Vhembe region fall under the red zone for Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).

The Rotary Club of Louis Trichardt held its induction dinner on Saturday at Northgate Lodge. This is the first time in three years that the club could hold an induction function, because of the Covid restrictions’ making things difficult in previous years. The Democratic Alliance (DA) filed a com plaint with the Environmental Management Inspectorate (Green Scorpions) against the Makhado Municipality and Vhembe District Municipality on Wednesday for the non-func tioning of the sewage wastewater treatment plant in Malherbe Street, Louis Trichardt. The sewage plant has allegedly been non op erational since being vandalised in December 2021, and despite several requests, no plans have been made to have it restored. “Raw sewage flows into a nearby riverbed and is further contaminating the water table that supplies residents with water through nearby boreholes,” said Makhado DA councillor Pierre Smalle in a press release. According to Smalle, the National Environ ment Management Act requires a duty of care, as well as the control of emergency measures, from both Makhado and Vhembe. “The Water Services Authority responsible for the collec tion, treatment and discharge of wastewater is required to meet certain national and provincial markers, which Vhembe District does not. The DA has taken this action to call in the Green Scorpions on behalf of the Makhado and Tshi kota residents as this negligence poses a serious health risk, and we cannot allow lives to be endangered,” said Smalle. Smalle said that the municipalities’ failure to restore the sewage treatment plant infringed on the residents’ right to a healthy and clean environment and that they would further lodge a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission for the people who live among flowing sewage.
Farmers must heed ban on movement of cattle, warns Minister Didiza
The annual Service Award of the Louis Trichardt Rotary Club was this year awarded to Andél Greyling of Anhetico Properties. The trophy was handed to her on Saturday night by the club’s president, Leon Barnard. Leon Barnard (right) was again inducted as president of the Louis Trichardt Rotary Club on Saturday night. Here he is being congratulated by the Assistant Governor of Rotary, Horst Meyer, who came all the way from Polokwane. Because of the Covid restrictions, the local club was unable to have its induction functions the past two years.

Last week, the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Angela Thoko Didiza, announced that all movement of cattle in the country was to be suspended because of an outbreak of FMD. This means that cattle may not be moved from one property to another for any reason for a period of 21 days, reviewable weekly.Inamedia statement, Didiza confirmed that the country is currently experiencing 116 outbreaks of FMD at farms, feedlots and in com munal areas around KwaZulu Natal, Limpopo, Northwest, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Free State. The only exception will be by way of a vet erinary permit for cattle for direct slaughter at registered abattoirs, and slaughter for ritual purposes.“Farmers must remember that we are in the Foot and Mouth Disease red zone, so we are only allowed to move cattle within our own district,” said Havinga. According to him, this cattle lockdown might lead to short term economic effects. “The lockdown may affect the supply of meat, which might see beef prices going up for a short period, but stabilising again after the lockdown,” he said. Minister Didiza warned that any disregard for this ban would be considered a criminal offense.
Perpetrators will be prosecuted for contravening the Animal Diseases Act.

Levubu-man teiken van padrowers
The South African National Road Agency Limited (SANRAL) last week opened a new section of the N1 west of Musina in Limpopo Province. This project, known as the Musina Ring Road, was undertaken to divert traffic around Musina to the west and will significant ly reduce the travelling time between South Africa and Zimbabwe. It will also alleviate the current congestion in the CBD of Musina. Motorists who travel to Musina or who wish to access Musina will be able to do so from the N1 national road at the Nancefield and Musina Interchanges on the northern and southern sides of the town respectively. “We would like to thank motorists and the public for their patience and understanding during the con struction period. We wish motorists safe driving on this new road section,” said Mr Hennie Kotze, project engineer at SANRAL’s Northern Region. Image: SANRAL.
Derhalwe was sy optrede redelik.

The embattled mayor of Musina, Cllr Godfrey Nkhanedzeni Mawela, is smiling again, and with reason. His assault case, involving a Muswodi-Dipeni resident, was withdrawn by the Mutale Magistrate’s Court on 25 July before the case could even be handed over to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a decision, after the complainant apparently decided to drop the charge. Mawela was charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm after he had allegedly assaulted and injured Carries Munzhelele (25) with his fists and a beer bottle during a drinking spree at a local tavern in MuswodiDipeni village in the early hours of Saturday, 26 February this year. Both Mawela and Munzhelele are residents of MuswodiDipeni village, outside Musina. Mawela first appeared in the Mutale Magistrate’s Court on 28 February and his case was postponed many times for further police investigations. He was supposed to appear in court again on 29 July, but on 25 July, Munzhelele informed the state advocate that he did not want to continue with the case. Munzhelele told the media that he had made the decision to withdraw the case as he believed in a peaceful settlement with the mayor, and because they both reside in the same village.
SANParks also confirmed that the matter has been referred to the SAPS for investigation. The EWT gave feedback on the incident the past week in a media statement. The organisation states that this mass poisoning is a devastating blow to the country’s vulture populations.
The spokesperson for the ANC in the Vhembe region, Ms Gumani Mukwevho, said she would first have to gather more information on the Step Asiderule to determine what happened to someone whose case had been withdrawn.

Mass poisoning a blow to SA’s vulture population
“I realised that my case was being used to settle political differences in the Vhembe region, and I did not want my name involved anymore. I had been in hiding since my fight with the mayor started in February, as I was terrorised by the mayor’s friends. It had been really hard.” Munzhelele said that he had finally returned to his home in MuswodiDipeni, and that, after he had withdrawn the charge, he no longer had enemies in the village. When the media contacted Mawela, he only confirmed that the case had been withdrawn but would not provide any more comments.

Two of the surviving African white-backed vultures had recovered well enough for release on 18 August 2022, after being fitted with GPS tracking units, so that their progress can be monitored. Pictured is one of the two being fitted with the GPS tracking unit. Photo: Endangered Wildlife Trust. still alive and rushed to the Shingwedzi and Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre for treatment. Following the incident, Yolan Friedman, CEO of the EWT, expressed her concern that “given the critical status of vultures globally, poisonings at this scale place the species at increasing risk of extinction”. Acting CEO of SANParks Hapiloe Sello also stated that “this reprehensible act once again highlights the everpresent danger of poisoning by unscrupulous people. We cannot afford to let our guard down, and we call on lawenforcement agencies outside the park to move swiftly to arrest the perpetrators”. The scene has been cordoned off for further investigation and the carcasses have been burned to ensure that no further poisonings occur. Initial indications are that some of the carcasses were harvested for their body parts.

Conservation News of another mass poisoning of vultures along the Kruger National Park fence near Punda Maria has conservationists fuming. The horrific discovery was made by park rangers patrolling the fence on 11 August. A buffalo carcass, killed by snaring and then laced with highly toxic poison, was used to kill the animals. A total of 108 vultures died after feeding on the carcass. The species killed included 104 critically endangered whitebacked vultures, one critically endangered whiteheaded vulture, two vulnerable Cape vultures and one endangered lappetfaced vulture. With the assistance of the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), 24 vultures were found
“Two of the surviving African whitebacked vultures had recovered well enough for release on 18 August 2022, after being fitted with GPS tracking units, so that we can monitor their progress,” says the EWT. According to the EWT, the demand for animal body parts to feed the illegal wildlife trade has led to thousands of vultures’ being poisoned across Africa, which has devastated populations and is driving them rapidly towards extinction.

“Scavenging mammals, including lions, hyenas, and leopards, are also severely affected by poisoning. Over the last 10 years, there has been a steady increase in wildlife poisoning across the Lowveld and the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (GLTCA),” says the EWT. “The Greater Kruger, including the associated private nature reserves and the Great Limpopo Transfrontier landscape, is an important, vulturerich landscape and currently a hotspot for wildlife poisoning, with at least six new incidents recorded in the southern half of the Greater Kruger since February 2020. In all of these cases, vultures were the most heavily affected by poisoning, with approximately 600 vultures from five threatened species killed in the Greater Kruger since January 2019, predominantly in the northern section of the Kruger National Park,” says the EWT. The current scale and rate of vulture losses to poisoning are frightening and the EWT warned that it could lead to the local extinction of vultures in this region within the next four years. “It is important to note that many incidents are not detected or reported as they occur in vast wilderness landscapes. Because of this, we suspect our records are underreporting the severity of the threat,” the EWT says. According to the EWT, the current population estimates for whitebacked vultures in southern
Africa are around 7 350 mature individuals, and based on the last aerial surveys done in 2014, there are around 900 breeding pairs (and approximately 2 400 birds) in the Kruger National Park. “This event has thus led to the loss of approximately 5% of the region’s vultures. The populations affected in the latest incident will take some time to recover, particularly as it is the peak of vulture breeding season, and it is estimated that for every breeding adult lost, one chick is lost too,” says the EWT. The EWT has been working with SANParks to improve the management and response to these devastating poisoning events across the Kruger National Park since 2019. The EWT’s Wildlife Poisoning Response training has trained more than 400 rangers to identify, detect, and deal with these events effectively by containing the crime scene and sampling carcasses for investigative purposes. Rangers are also trained in methods to save as many surviving birds as possible and decontaminate the scene to prevent further poisoning of animals or people. The EWT also works closely with the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre to facilitate the rapid rescue and treatment of vultures that survive these incidents. The rangers and EWT staff swiftly administer first aid to vultures on site, then safely transport survivors to the rehabilitation centre. Here they receive aroundtheclock intensive care to ensure that they are stabilised, the toxins are eliminated, and the birds are fit and healthy before release. Over 20202022 alone, the EWT and Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre rescued 75 threatened vultures that survived poisoning incidents in the Kruger, of which 67 have been successfully rehabilitated and released back into the wild to have a second chance to thrive and breed. In conclusion, Mr Ike Phaahla, KNP spokesperson, says that the park appreciates the speed with which their rangers and the EWT responded to the scene and managed to save some of the animals.

“We are also following up on the investigations with the SAPS because we would like to see the perpetrators facing the full might of the law,” Phaahla says.

By Pétria de Vaal Jerry Makananise, a 21-year-old psy chology student, is one of 10 finalists for Miss Makhado Royal 2022. The pageant takes place in December this year at Kone Village. Jerry was born and raised in Louis Trichardt and at tended both Laerskool and Hoërskool Louis Trichardt. “People always told me to model and participate in pageants. I was never interested until one night in December 2018. I couldn’t sleep and watched the Miss Universe pageant. The then Miss South Africa, Tamaryn Green, talked about the overcoming of tuberculosis something that she wanted to hide when diagnosed. I was inspired by the way she represented South Africa – I then decided to participate in pageants,” JerryThesays.first time Jerry took part was in the “Princess Pageant” in Port Elizabeth in 2019. She was then a first year stu dent at the Nelson Mandela University. She ended in the top five. Many other pageants followed, e.g. Miss Teen (in the top ten), Queen of the World, South Africa (second princess), Miss Polok wane and Mini Miss RSA. “I have a unique insight into mental health of teenagers as I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety, as well as borderline personality disorder and an acute eating disorder when I turned 17. I was at a mental health facility two times and have a personal record of seven suicide attempts. I believe in the power of words. If we speak up about things that would normally be consid ered taboo, that’s when we start to dis mantle the walls that hold us back. I am not ashamed of my experiences because I believe there is a little girl or little boy out there who needs to know that they are not crazy and they are beautiful with all their flaws. If I can touch just one person, I’ve done my job. That is why I do pageants,” Jerry shares. It struck her one day that, if some body had been there for her at the time of her first suicide attempt at the age of 11, things could have been different. She recalls that she needed to hear that someone was there to hold her hand, or saying that things were going to be okay. “I have a duty to do this, to reach out. I love giving advice. I’m there for them to lend a hand, to hug, to smile. At high school, people always came to me if they wanted to give up.”
The 21-year-old Jerry Makananise from Louis Trichardt is a finalist in the Miss Makhado Royal 2022 pageant. The past week, she shared her inspirational life story on what motivated her to start competing in beauty pageants.
ZOUTPANSBERGER, 26 AUGUSTUS 2022 5
“There is a little boy or girl out there that needs to know they are not crazy”
Jerry continues to tell that she did not originally plan to study psychology. She wanted to study biomedical science, but the course was full. Her faculty admin istrator recommended that she do a BA and switch to biomedical science in her second year. She discovered psychology and never looked back. Being a final year student, she studies online, works full time and is involved in many ventures. Charity is close to Jerry’s heart. “I keep a package in my car with dog food and a dog blanket. Whenever I see a stray animal, I feed it, or pick it up and take it to the SPCA whose telephone number I know off by heart!” says Jerry. An excited Jerry continues that, if she wins the title of Miss Makhado Royal 2022, she will open a model ling school that offers underprivileged models in Louis Trichardt (especially in the villages) free classes. The R10 000 business venture prize if she wins would be very helpful in finding a place where people do not need to pay an arm and a leg to reach their full potential. Jerry designs all her own dresses for pageants and developed the confidence with yet another act of charity to assist less fortunate models with dresses – free of Jerrycharge.shares this quote (inspired by Finding Nemo): “You are not alone; it gets better, and just keep swimming!”

Lisa (53) is the mother of two grown daughters and wife of the CEO of a successful Sandton-based Import/Export company. Since his work often takes him away on extended business trips abroad and both her daughters had left the nest, Lisa has taken up hiking and bird watching to fill her days and get out of the empty house. She frequently visits nature reserves and national parks around South Africa.
Rovha Gerard Lisa Taki Gerard is a Dutch adventure tourist. He ticks most of the boxes as far as stereotyping is concerned. He is slightly impatient and not discreet at all. He retired from the university where he was teaching a year ago and now at the age of 66 he spends his time travelling the world. Shabnim’s small stature may be deceiving. She is a tough adventurer and even formed part of an expedition to Marion Island. She looks young, but at 42 she has seen a lot in life. She lectures at a local university and is well-respected in her field. to be a loner, mostly travelling on his own. He has climbed Kilimanjaro and completed the Camino de Santiago. You will mostly find him sitting in a quiet sport reading a book or newspaper. of humour and willing to tackle whatever adventure awaits. She’s not that good with bike-riding and prefers walking trials.
Marelize is one of the main characters in the adventure and also the narrator. She is 27 and originally from Namibia. She is a seasoned traveller and has visited countries in Europe and in the USA. She will not only describe the route being followed with its highlights, but also expand on her ten travel companions. It is important to follow closely what she says and build the characters accordingly. Marilize has a good sense Marelize Rovha, the soft-spoken dentist, with the smiling eyes. He seems Adrian is a boisterous character who enjoys controlling the conversation. He is normally the one that likes to walk in the front, sharing his expertise freely with whoever wants to listen. He says he has travelled all over the world, but specifically likes the cold Russian climate. This most enjoyable travel experience was an epic snowmobile Journey in the Ural Mountains.
Zachary is often referred to as the local Bear Grylls. When it comes to the outdoors, there is very little he does not know. His insatiable thirst for adventure has taken the 39-year-old geologist on some of the world’s most Emma is an experienced journalist who is currently working for a local newspaper while dreaming of becoming a war photographer. At 37 she has won numerous awards for writing, as well as photography, but has never mastered the art of keeping direction. She is constantly searching for that new adventure. Will she ever settle down?
Lee (28) was born with a neurological disorder that inhibits the full use of her right leg and arm. She has, however, never allowed this inability to become a disability, living her life to the fullest and constantly challenging her body. Although physically strong, every now and then she shows signs of emotional weakness. She is not keen to talk about it, but something or someone has definitely left a scar. Gerrit
Of course, with fewer characters to choose from, it means the judges now have to eliminate entries. Previously, the entries not used could wait in line for the next edition, but now hard choices must be made. This week’s winner is Chantelle van Vuuren, and what a worthy winner! She took us into the heart of the conflict in Algeria. What is so exciting is that our writers are willing to explore and tell stories of different countries and different cultures. We are not only being entertained, but we also learn more through the “eyes” of our fictional characters. For next week, we already have entries for the character of Gerrit (3), Adrian, Shabnim and Lisa (2). We will wait until 13:00 on Friday before making a decision.Pleasesend in your entries before then and check carefully to see which characters are still available. Thus far we have used the stories of Marelize, Gerard, Zachary, Lee and Emma. The ones still available are Rovha, Lisa, Shabnim, Gerrit, Takalani andForAdrian.those who do not yet know how the competition works:Every week, R1 000 has been earmarked for the reader who submits the best story. The competition combines a travel story with unrelated individual adventures.Theweekly travel episodes are written by our own staff and these focus on the journey of a group of adventurers who are exploring the Old Salt Trail in the western Soutpansberg. They follow a fiveday route, during which they encounter many of the treasures the mountain has to Theoffer.group of adventurers comprise 11 very diverse fictional travellers. The narrator is a young lady called Marelize. In every week’s edition, she or one of the other hikers talks about the route and what the group members have encountered. Two “scar stories” are featured for every day of the trip. The group members stop at a specific location for lunch and one of the members tells his or her story. The same happens at night, when the group members gather around the campfire. This is also the part where our readers need to contribute. The readers must use their imagination and write a story focusing on one of the characters. The theme of the competition is: “The night of the scars”. The idea is that each story will focus on a “scar” that the characters received somewhere in their lives. These can be physical scars, or they can be emotional scars. Short profiles of the 11 characters are provided. Studying each character and building a story around their characteristics will be crucial. The maximum length of an entry is 1 300 words. Once a character’s story is published, that “entry” is closed. If, for instance, you decided to write about Shabnim’s adventure and another writer’s story about Shabnim gets published, you need to move on to another character. However, this also means that entries can have a longer shelf life. Readers are welcome to enter stories on all six remaining characters. The entries will stay “live” until the judges have decided who the winner is regarding a specific character. All the stories as well as the travel adventures are published on our website matter.inandcret)thejudgedofstandweek’sdoescharacterstorytoFriday.berger.co.za/salt_trail.www.zoutpansJudgingstartsat13:00onaAllentriesreceivedupthatpointwillbejudged.Ifaisenteredaboutaspecificandthatcharacternotfeatureinthenextedition,theentrywilloverandbecomespartthe“pool”ofstoriestobethefollowingweek.Apartfromtheseguidelines,normalrulesapply.The(sejudges’decisionsarefinaltheywillnotmeetanyoneabarlatertodiscusstheNostaffmemberofthe Zoutpansberger or their family members may enter. dangerous wilderness trails. It is said that he once disappeared along the infamous West Coast Trail in British Columbia. When he reappeared 14 days later, he had a nasty scar on his left shoulder and a haunted look in his eyes.
This week was a wonderfully productive one for our local writers, and we were flooded with entries. Choosing a winner is becoming more difficult, because the quality of the entries is simply getting better and better. (Not that the ones already used were not good, but the bar is being raised.)
Meet the adventurers
Takalani (Taki) (25) For the full-of-life Takalani, nursing has always been her calling. She is a vibrant, energetic young lady who’s infectious laugh can make any bad situation feel a little bit brighter. She is loved by all her collegues and patients. Although she has never done Gerrit (55) comes from a military background. As a young boy, his father (also ‘n military man) shaped him into becoming a soldier. Tigers don’t cry and love is but a four-letter word. Rising to the rank of captain, he was one of the last members of the old South African Army to have seen the horrors of the Bush War on the Angolan border. With the new 1994 dispensation, he found himself on civvy street in a world he did not understand and nor did the world understand him. He never found love, although so desperately longing for it. He is constantly running away from something to somewhere, thus finding himself in the Soutpansberg. Maybe here he can find peace.

Emma described the chaos that ensued and how her mother prayed that this would not be the end for the family, in a foreign land. “We drove back to Tipaza, back to our rental home, in the hope that it was still safe there. We were wrong,” said Emma and took another sip of water. The others looked at her anxiously, some moving around in their seats.
The group left Medike’s Marula campsite just after the break of dawn. The trail headed straight up the mountain, where a singletrack trail wound its way up. The eleven adventurers had become used to the steep climbs, but the rocky sections still sapped their energy. Once they reached the top, there was a small plateau, which provided a stunning view of the gorge below. From there they could marvel at the road they had just traversed and how high they had climbed in such a short space of time. They didn’t have much opportunity for rest as the group now had to make their way through the mountainous bushveld, down into the Duluni Gorge. Once at the bottom, they encountered the stream, with its fresh and sparkling water – a welcome and refreshing break after the arduous descent. The trees that provided the shade included the odd yellowwood giant, as well as the more common Forest Fever Trees. The route followed the stream, crossing it quite a few times. On a specific narrow section of the route Marelize spotted scratch marks on a tree stump. She had seen similar ones a few days before, in the gorge near Schoemansdal.“Leopardmarks,” confirmed Edwin, their very knowledgeable guide. “I will tell you a bit more about them when we stop for lunch at the cave.” A bit of boulder hopping was required to get to Duluni Cave, but the prospect of having lunch and a bit of a rest stopped anyone from complaining.“How can we be sure a leopard won’t be waiting for us here in the bushes?” asked Marelize, definitely sounding a bit nervous while offloading her backpack next to a rock. “Highly unlikely. Any leopard would have heard us a long time ago and disappeared in the dense bushes. The chances of us seeing them are extremely slim,” Edwin reassured the group.Their mentioning leopards sparked Taki’s interest. “How many leopards are there in this area?” she asked. “Well, at the Medike Nature Reserve, at least four. They have even named them. Zack was first captured on camera in 2020. This was when the camera trap grid was initially set up to monitor the local wildlife. He was seen quite often during 2020, but then he started to come around less frequently. It is possible that a new leopard, named Thor, has moved in. He still dominates the territory,” said Edwin. “And what about the ladies?” asked Taki.“A female leopard called Samantha was caught on camera on several occasions. In 2020, she was sighted with a cub, which was named Lunar. Unfortunately, Lunar was only spotted a few times in 2020 and then he disappeared. Near the end of 2021, Samantha was spotted with another young cub. I haven’t seen the latest reports, but I must assume that the four leopards are still be roaming the area,” said Edwin. Taki’s curiosity was now at fever pitch. “But how many of these lovely animals are still left in the Soutpansberg mountains?” she wanted to know. “The research done the past few years has been very helpful,” said Edwin. “A decade ago, scientists were very worried that no more leopards would be left in the Soutpansberg by 2020. The 2021 data suggests that there are still roughly eight leopards per 100 square kilometres in the mountain. In the Western Soutpansberg, 30 different leopards could be identified last year, 17 of them being females. It shows a reasonably healthy and stable leopard population, but these animals are still endangered,” Edwin“Well, continued.that’senough about the cats and the scars they leave on trees,” Marelize interrupted with a shiver. “We still have to eat, and then we have to get moving to reach Leshiba’s Luvhondo Camp before dark, but first we have to hear from … Wait, whose turn is “Emma.it…?”I think it’s Emma’s turn,” said Gerrit, plonking himself down and grabbing his water bottle. He glanced over at Emma, who looked a bit startled, but then she seemed to collect herself and looked a bit resigned that her turn to bare her soul had come.
“It was only when we were a safe distance away from Tipaza that Ms Polinsky noticed the blood. When I looked down, I saw a deep cut in my left hand. It was bleeding profusely, but I didn’t care, because it showed that I tried to help my parents. We visited a clinic that was close by, where they stitched up my hand and bandaged it. Ms Polinsky and I then drove to Batna, where we would buy plane tickets back to South Africa. Ms Polinsky explained that I would have to go and live with my Aunt Helena in George. As we got onto the plane, I felt even more heartbroken. My parents were gone, my caregiver, whom I had grown to love, was abandoning me, and I had to live with an aunt I didn’t know,” she said, the misery of her situation at such a young age reflected on her Thereface.was an eery silence in the camp while the group waited for Emma to continue. Gerrit got up and put another log onto the fire, but perhaps it was a way not to show his emotions.“Afewmonths went by before we had a burial for my parents. It was quite the task to bring them back to South Africa, but that was how they would’ve wanted it. We buried them in Wilderness, as this is where they had met and married. Ms Polinsky was at the funeral as well and bade me farewell as she now had a journey of her own. She married three years after the incident and emigrated to Alaska. As I grew older, wars started to intrigue me. I wanted to delve into the minds of historical generals and captains and find out what triggered countries to start wars. Since that time in 1991, when the Algerian war began, my fascination with wars increased. I wanted to capture everything on camera - all the emotion and feelings and heartache caused by war, because with destruction comes growth. I have learned that the hard way,” said Emma while looking into the eyes of her companions. “This was how I got my scars, physically and emotionally. And this is why I take photos of the scars that were left behind by wars. Each picture tells a story that cannot be put into words; it can only be felt through the eyes of the beholder,” she said, a pensive look in her eyes as she rubbed the scar on her hand.
ZOUTPANSBERGER, 26 AUGUSTUS 2022 9 DAY 4 - MEDIKE’S LEOPARDS LEAVE THEIR WELCOME SCARS ON TREES
Chantelle Jansen van Vuuren (25) was born in Edenvale, East Rand and moved to Louis Trichardt with her family in 2009. She matriculated in 2014 at Louis Trichardt High School. “I am currently working in town with an amazing team who inspires me daily. Without my family, friends and colleagues’ support I would not have been able to do this,” she says.
Emma now captures the scars of wars
“A week after we arrived, the first bomb dropped. Ms Polinsky and I were busy with maths in the tent near the entrance to the burial site when the whole earth started shaking. I was terrified and started to cry. My mom and dad came running out, terror in their eyes. My mom grabbed me by the arm and pulled me towards the Jeep, while my dad and Ms Polinsky were throwing equipment in the back of the car. As my dad closed his door and started the engine, another three bombs came flying down.”
Sources for this article:
“When we entered the town of Tipaza, the mercenaries had already started to bombard it, and it was lit with petrol Molotovs. We parked in a small alley close to the home that we were staying in. My dad told Ms Polinsky to stay with me while he and mom got our clothes, passports, water and food for the journey ahead. We needed to get out of Algeria as soon as possible. I saw them cross the road and enter the building. They were in there for about twenty minutes before the front door opened, and I could see them with our backpacks. They were halfway across the road when a bomb was dropped on the building behind them. They fell to their knees as rubble landed on top of them,” said Emma, her breath catching in her throat. She paused for a moment while her gaze fixed on an area behind the group, as if she preferred not to look at them while continuing with the story.“Iremember screaming as I opened the car door and ran to them. Their bottom halves were trapped under some debris. I tried to lift some of the rubble, but I was too small and too weak. My mom grabbed my arm and handed me one of the backpacks that contained our passports, a wallet and water bottles, and told me that I needed to go with Ms Polinsky. I refused and told them that I would get help. Both my parents looked at me that day with tears in their eyes. ‘Everything will be okay’ were the last words that my mom said to me before Ms Polinsky picked me up and ran back to the Jeep.” Tears were now silently streaming down her face. Emma described the frantic journey out of Tipaza. “Ms Polinsky told me to keep my head down to avoid being shot. As we drove, we saw dozens of bodies of all ages and genders scattered along the way. The sounds of guns and explosives got quieter the further we went,” she said but then paused to pull up her left sleeve. A scar of about three centimetres was clearly visible.
The night of the scars on the Old Salt Trail
Emma’s story: By Chantelle Jansen van Vuuren Emma shuffled into her camping chair and sat up a bit straighter. It was her time to tell the others about her“Growingscars. up, I travelled a lot,” she said while looking at the fire. “Both my parents were archaeologists, and we never stayed in a country for more than six months. On the 19th of December 1991, we travelled to Algeria, where my mom and dad wanted to investigate the Qabr-er-Rumia. I was six at the time and I absolutely fell in love with travelling and unravelling mysteries,” she said as a small smile played on her mouth. “What is the Qabr-er-Rumia?” asked Lisa with a frown on her face. “I apologise, I should’ve used the English term. It is better known as the “Tomb of the Christian Lady”. She was the beautiful daughter of Count Julian. Florinda La Cava was her name,” Emma answered. Lisa gave a small nod of understanding. “We stayed in a small town called Tipaza, which was convenient because it was only about 12 kilometres from the burial site. We were all ecstatic about this new adventure on our path...”“Wait a minute,” Lisa interrupted. “If you were six, why were you not in school?”“Iwas. Sort of”, Emma answered. “I had a caretaker, Ms Jacomine Polinsky, who came with us whenever we went abroad. She taught me basic education as any child would receive in school, and as a bonus I could learn any language that my heart desired,” Emma continued, but her stern glare at Lisa made the latter realise that now was not the time for rude“Anyway, interruptions.sohere we were in Tipaza, in the beginning of winter. After we unpacked and got something to eat, we headed out to the burial site. It was magnificent! The monument was 40 metres in height, but unfortunately, over the years, it had been damaged, so the height was now approximately 30 metres. We spent the whole day there, while mom and dad got their gear ready for the next few months. If only we knew what horrors would take place in a couple of days, we probably never would have visited Algeria, and then I might still have my parents,” Emma said in a hushed tone.As she took a sip of water, she could see the shocked expressions on her companions’ faces. Their eyes widened, and they waited expectantly for Emma to continue.
