Hoi is very optimistic about the prospects of increased trade between South Africa and China. “South Africa mainly exports minerals and metals to China. He reckons South Africa has a “natural advantage for the development of coal-fired power stations”.

Impact on the road infrastructure The impact of the proposed SEZ on the road infrastructure in the region will be quite severe. In August last year, the general manager of communications at SANRAL, Mr Vusi Mona, said that the SEZ was bound to have a major effect on the whole of the Limpopo province. Mona wrote an opinion piece for Independent Online and said that the expected initial R40 billion investment would lead to at least eight large-scale industrial projects. Mona mentioned that a ring road would be built that would skirt Musina and alleviate some of the traffic problems at the border town. “More than 1 000 heavy vehicles use the road every day and have to pass through the CBD of Musina. It creates major congestion in the town as well as conflict with local traffic and pedestrians. Damage to infrastructure is inevitable,” he said. SANRAL awarded a contract of R625 million to Basil Read in late 2015 to build this road and construction commenced in April 2016. When Mona’s opinion piece was published, he was confident that the project would be completed by the end of April 2019. Unfortunately, all work on this project was stopped when Basil Read filed for business rescue on 14 June this year because of cashflow problems. The company was placed under business rescue a day after their application on 15 June.

Popallin Ranch noord van die Soutpansberg het nou geen witleeus meer oor nie, nadat stropers hierdie week die laaste drie vergiftig en hulle koppe en pote afgesny het. “So, ná 10 dae slaan hulle weer toe … die laaste van die witleeus is vergiftig en weer koppe en pote afgesny,” het Tania Bezuidenhout Dinsdagaand gesê. Sy het verwys na hul teelmannetjie, ‘n dragtige wyfie en een van haar vorige werpsel. Op 12 Julie het stropers nog ‘n dragtige wyfie, asook ‘n witleeumannetjie, doodgemaak en hulle koppe en pote afgesny. Die jongste voorval het tussen 04:00 en 05:00 Dinsdagoggend plaasgevind. Dit het die personeel van Popallin Ranch, ‘n baie gewilde toeriste aantreklikheid juis vanweë hul witleeus, verpletterd

gelaat. “Ons almal is bietjie af vandag [Dinsdag]. Dit is ‘n groot verlies vir ons. My pa het daai mannetjie en wyfie met die hand grootgemaak,” het Tania gesê. Die mannetjie was al 10 jaar oud. Met die gru-foto’s van dooie, onthoofde leeus nog vars in die geheue, is daar nou nog foto’s waar die leeus, as koning van die oerwoud, kop- en pootloos in hul eie plasse bloed lê. Dat Tania-hulle kwaad is, is om dinge lig te stel. “Eintlik is ek die bliksem in, om dit mooi te stel,” het ‘n uiters ontstoke Tania gesê. Buiten vir Dinsdag se drie leeus en 12 Julie se twee, het stropers oor Desember verlede jaar nog twee ander leeus vergiftig en hulle koppe en pote afgesny. Kort vantevore is drie ander leeus met gif

doodgemaak, maar die booswigte moes deur iets of iemand gehinder geword het, want die leeus se koppe en pote is nie afgesny nie. Die Malaladrift-grondpad loop deur Popallin Ranch. Dit is juis vanaf hierdie grondpad wat stropers toegang tot die leeukampe verkry. Die leeus word doodgemaak deur vleis wat met ‘n plaagdoder besmet is vir hulle te gooi. Dit is ‘n uiters wrede manier om iets dood te maak. Die vermoede bestaan dat die koppe en pote vir die Sjinese mark bestem is, wat die tande en naels blykbaar vir “medisinale” doeleindes gebruik. Wat egter die bestuur van Popallin Ranch versteur, is die gebrek aan arrestasies in dié verband. Sedert Desember verlede jaar het hulle geen terugvoer gekry van die plaaslike polisie daar by wie die saak aanhangig gemaak is nie. Dit het hulle genoop om intussen hulp van die provinsiale

polisie in te kry, met ‘n persoon wat help met die ondersoek. “Daar is baie leidrade wat hulle opvolg, maar mense moet gevang word en gou ook,” het Tania gesê. Nuus van die wrede en onmenslike slagting van Popallin Ranch se leeus het talle inwoners die afgelope week erg ontstel. Die jongste slagting sal eweneens nie goeie nuus vir hulle wees nie. Intussen het senior inspekteur Lawrence Khodobo van die Dierebeskermingsvereniging in Louis Trichardt ook gereageer. Hy het aangeraai dat die bestuur van Popallin Ranch die saak direk aanmeld by die NSPCA (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) se wildlewe-eenheid. “Hulle kan klaers behulpsaam wees, want baie keer neem die polisie nie klagtes soos hierdie ernstig op nie. Die eenheid sal dan van hulle kant af die saak opvolg met die polisie,” het Khodobo gesê.

Local newspapers hold their own at FCJ Awards National Awards

Limpopo-based newspapers, and specifically independent publications, once again made their presence felt during the annual Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ) Excellence Awards, held at the Leriba Hotel & Spa in Pretoria last Friday. This award ceremony is the jewel in the crown of the FCJ, during which the top achievers in local and community newspapers in South Africa are A winning team! The Zoutpansberger and Limpopo tracted hundreds of entries once more from across Mirror scooped up several awards during the annual FCJ Excellence Awards, which took place the country, showing growth in all categories. in Pretoria last week. These included entries from big conglomerates such as Caxton and Media 24, as well as smaller, independent publications, such as the Zoutnet group’s Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror. The Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror showed once again that they can hold their own against the big boys, featuring numerous Top-10 finishes in several categories, including a win in the extremely difficult Investigative Journalist of the Year category. Here, Zoutnet’s Anton van Zyl took top honours, with the Zoutpansberger’s Andries van Zyl taking second place. In the hard-news category, three journalists stood out, which included the Limpopo Mirror’s Elmon Tshikhudo, who scooped up second place in this fiercely contested category. Top honours

New Mazda 3 is seductively smooth

Elegant, bespoke and seductive. These are all words that can be used to describe the new seventh-generation Mazda 3. The Japanese car manufacturer has sent a clear message to its more traditional German rivals in the premium car market of what to expect in the coming years.

First impressions

The model made available by the Mazda agents in Louis Trichardt was the 1.5 Dynamic automatic hatchback in Soul red. In keeping with Mazda’s “Kodo” design language, the new Mazda 3 features seamless body panels that flow together, with no harsh character lines. This provides a smooth and almost sensual look from all angles. The front and rear have been redesigned, drawing heavily on black accents in the grill and a rear bumper with LED lights adding a more aggressive look.

Performance The SKYACTIV – G 1.5L four-cylinder engine in the Mazda 3 guise develops 88 Kw of power and 153 Nm of torque. Mazda have gone with a more traditional offering, opting for naturally aspirated engines as opposed to turbo power with higher compression ratios. This in turn means more direct power with no lag. The six-speed automatic gearbox feels smooth and unlaboured in traffic, overtaking other cars with ease, with seamless gear changing making it a joy to drive in town or on the open road.

Interior

The front dash has been given a more modern look, with soft-touch leather on the steering wheel, gear knob and door handles. The new Mazda 3 is more driver oriented with a new digital instrument cluster and heads-up display coming standard in the entry-level Active models. In the centre of the new dash sits the 8.8-inch-

Apart from the writing categories, the Zoutpansberger also scooped up a third place in the Newspaper of the Year category for Independent Commercial Newspapers. Their colleagues at the Far North Bulletin in Tzaneen ultimately won this category, while also scooping up the Best FrontPage prize in the same category for independent commercial newspapers.

Volgens Joy en Engela was dit een van die trotsste oomblikke in hulle lewens - dat hul pa kon help (en by wees) om sy dogters te laat gradueer. Die Louis Trichardt Rolbalklub het op 13 Julie hulle algemene jaarvergadering gehou. Dit het saamgeval met die klub se jaarlikse klubkampioenskappe. Afgeneem is die klub se nuutverkose bestuur vir 2019/20. Van links na regs staan Phillip van Vollenstee (sekretaris), Anton Swanepoel (klubpresident), Bernard Volschenk (addisionele lid), Carel Volschenk (onder-president) en Marié Volschenk (tesourier). Julius Pienaar het die afgelope naweek die Hanglip Posduifklub se jaaroudwedvlug vanaf Wolmaransstad gewen, nadat sy wenduif die afstand voltooi het met ‘n wenspoed van 1827.69 meter per minuut. Hy was ook 6de. Die ander toptien plekke in die wedvlug het gegaan aan Nico Bezuidenhout (2de, 7de en 8ste), Gerhard Bezuidenhout (3de en 9d)e, Ben & Marian Pienaar (4de en 5de) en Erasmus Hokke (10de). In die opewedvlug was dit Gerhard Bezuidenhout wat spog met ‘n eerste plek nadat sy wenduif die afstand voltooi het met ‘n wenspoed van 1832.41 meter per minuut. Hy was ook 3de en

8ste. Julius Pienaar was 2de en 9de, Ben & Marian Pienaar 4de, 5de, 6de en 7de en TE Smit 10de. Die klub het ook hul laaste veilingwedvlug van die jaar vanaf Wolmaransstad beslis. Die wedvlug is gewen deur Nico Bezuidenhout met ‘n duif van Hannes Bronkhorst van Makopane. Nico was ook tweede met ‘n duif van Martin Bezuidenhout wat Trompie Hofmyer geteel het, asook vierde met Hendrik van Rensburg van Polokwane se duif. Julius Pienaar was derde met ‘n duif van George Schempers, geteel deur Ben Pienaar, en Gerhard Bezuidenhout vyfde met Frans de Lange van Ellisras se duif wat deur Gerhard self geteel is. Eerskomende naweek vat die duiwe mekaar aan vanaf Bloemfontein oor ‘n afstand van 740 km.

The first official cycling XCO mountain bike race of the year, the Tour de Maroela, kicked off in Lephalale on 13 July. A lot of people were overwhelmed by the large number of entries by Messina Primary School - 32 of the 400 entries. “Well done, Messina! Our cyclists were on fire,” said the school. Elane Visser, Geané Anderson and Elru Brits all finished in the Top 5 for their age groups. Jonea Pretorius, Marina Gerner, Geneviéve O’Callahan, Nikita Gerner, Sabella van Zyl, Zoë Schmidt, Nelda Strijdom, Mi-né Verster, Dané Strijdom and Mikyla Gerner all finished among the Top 10 of their age groups. Hierdie week, 25 jaar gelede in die

Zoutpansberger Jagluiperds in die veld net buite Louis Trichardt? Dit klink amper asof dit fopnuus kan wees wat iemand met ‘n skewe sin vir humor op Facebook versprei. Tog was dit wat in Julie 1994 net buite die dorp gebeur het. ‘n Boer op ‘n plaas sowat ses kilometer oos van die dorp het drie jagluiperds opgemerk en dit aan Natuurbewaring gerapporteer. Wat die jagluiperds daar gemaak het en wat later van hulle geword het, is nie seker nie. Sekerlik die interessantste stukkie leesstof in die 19 Julie 1994 uitgawe is die redaksionele kommentaar. Dit is uiters selde dat die Zoutpansberger redaksionele kommentaar lewer. In dié geval het dit gehandel oor die jaarlikse Louis Trichardt Skou. “Vanjaar se skou mag egter die laaste skou wees in sy huidige formaat,” skryf die redakteur. Die organiseerders van die skou word aangeraai om realisties te wees oor die veranderinge in die land en die skou se “formule” dienooreenkomstig aan te pas. Die einde van ‘n era het aangebreek. Nog ‘n interessante stukkie nuus was die berig oor die damvlakke in die streek. Die Albasinidam se vlak het gedaal tot 12.82%. Dit sou later verder daal en kritieke afmetings aanneem. Die nuus uit die howe bly natuurlik inter-

essant. Ongelukkig (of gelukkig) kan ons nie weer die name noem van die inwoners van die dorp wat skandes gemaak het nie. Hulle het die reg “om vergeet te word”. Kom ons hoop maar hulle het behoorlik gerehabiliteer en dat hulle deesdae model-inwoners van die dorp is.

Lys van sportklubs Die Zoutpansberger is besig om ‘n gids saam te stel wat die sportklubs in die dorp en onmiddellike omgewing insluit. Die idee is om die inligting op ons webtuiste te stoor waar ons ‘n blad vir elke klub genereer. Vir die volgende klompie maande wil ons probeer om elke week rofweg ‘n halfblad in die koerant af te staan aan ‘n spesifieke sportklub. Hierdie inligting word dan oorgedra na die webtuiste. In elke week se koerant is daar dan ook ‘n lys met al die sportklubs wat weekliks verskyn. Die plan is om langs elke sportklub se naam ‘n QR-skakel te hê wat dan wys na die webblad. Daar is geen koste verbonde aan die projek nie. Dit is nie ‘n kommersiële projek nie en ons idee is slegs om inwoners meer bewus te maak van die geaffilieerde sportklubs en hulle in staat te stel om vinnig en maklik uit te vind watter sportklubs is aktief in die streek en hoe om hulle te kontak.
