leader, Chief Nndwakhulu Kharidzha, condemned the brutal killing of the man. He urged all to be united in the fight against crime. “All we want is a crime-free village where one can sleep outside with open gates, without fear of being attacked by thugs. We are now urging all residents to notify their neighbours if they are away from home. Very soon, we will be launching a street watch, which will serve to secure our village,” he said. The deceased was identified as a well-known pot maker, Mr Nowa Gonai, who originally came from Zimbabwe. The widow of Gonai, Ms Mavis Rikhotso, expressed her shock at what had happened and described the deceased as a hardworking man who loved all people. “Nobody will ever replace Gonai,” said Rikhotso. “His death has saddened us and robbed us of a hard worker who didn’t deserve to die such a brutal death.” Gonai is survived by his wife and two children.
The widow of the deceased, Mavis Rikhotso, expressed her sadness and described her husband as a hardworking man.

ing the community. They allegedly targeted shops owned by foreigners such as Somalians and Ethiopians. The thieves allegedly also broke into houses, stealing household goods. “We are tired of the anarchy caused by the thugs. They have been terrorising us for a long time and each time they have committed crime, they simply return to the community,” he said. During Wednesday’s incident, three of the alleged robbers apparently managed to flee. Residents chased after the suspects and apprehended a man, estimated to be in his thirties. The mob then beat him to death with sticks and stones. This is the second incident in less than a month where mob justice prevailed and a suspect was beaten and stoned to death. The previous week a resident of Tiyani Ha-Magoro was given the same medicine by the community as they thought he was behind the incidents of robbery in the area. The spokesperson for the SAPS in Levubu, W/O Solly Mukhola, confirmed the incident. He said that he was concerned about the fact that the community had taken the law into their own hands. “We condemn these acts where communities take the law into their own hands, because South Africa is not a banana republic. We will open a case and those identified will be arrested,” he said. W/O Mukhola appealed to residents to refrain from taking the law into their hands and said it made the police’s job even more difficult, as they were now unable to question the suspect. Court asked to intervene in Ha-Mutsha leadership issue In yet another traditional leadership dispute playing itself out in the High Court in Thohoyandou, the court is being asked to force the Commission on Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims (CTLDC) to make a ruling as to who the senior traditional leader should be in Ha-Mutsha. Mutheiwana Joseph Mugivhi’s legal team filed papers in February this year in the Limpopo High Court in which they argue that their client is the legitimate traditional leader of the settlement and deserves to have his case heard by the CTLDC. At the end of last year, the CTLDC cancelled the scheduled public hearings on the issue, claiming a conflict with an apparent previous decision taken on the matter by the then premier of the province, Mr Cassel Mathale. The other respondents in the court case include the Premier of Limpopo, the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) and the Mugivhi Royal Council. In Mutheiwana Mugivhi’s founding affidavit he states that he is the son of the late Mphagi Jim Mugivhi. He argues that he is the first male child born from the dzekiso wife, which would make him the logical successor to the title. His father died in 1966, when he was only 10 years old. According to him, his half-brother, Thanyani Thompson Mugivhi (commonly known as TT Mugivhi), was appointed in 1968 to act on his behalf until he came of age. TT Mugivhi ruled for 38 years until his death in 2006. In February 1980,
he was installed as chief by the then president of the Republic of Venda, Patrick Mphephu. Following his death, the name of TT Mugivhi’s son, Khuliso Goodwill Mugivhi, was forwarded by the royal family as his successor. This appointment, however, met with resistance and in August 2010 the Limpopo High Court adjudicated in the matter and set aside this appointment. The respondents, which included the province’s premier and the Mugivhi Royal Council, asked the court for leave to appeal against this ruling, but this was refused in September 2010. According to a letter from Coghsta, Khuliso Goodwill passed away later that same year. In November 2012, the Mugivhi Royal Family submitted the name of Mviseni Vincent Mugivhi as the successor. This followed after his two elder brothers, Elias Mbenge and Thizwihanngwi Moses, opted not to take up the position. In a letter dated 9 November 2012, Coghsta’s senior manager of traditional affairs confirms the appointment of Mviseni Vincent Mugivhi as senior traditional leader of the Mugivhi Traditional Community. The recommendation is supported by the executive committee of the House of Traditional Leaders. In Mutheiwana Joseph Mugivhi’s affidavit, he claims that, throughout the years, disputes and claims were submitted to the Mushasha Commission into Vhuhosi Affairs and also to the Ralushai Commission of Inquiry. “When Thanyani Thompson Mugivhi died, there was an outstanding dispute and claim lodged with the then Nhla-
po Commission,” he states. In a letter dated 14 October 2014, the CTLDC refers to the dispute and invites Mutheiwana Mugivhi to be present at a public hearing to be held on 29 October 2014 at the Vhembe District Municipality during which the dispute would be discussed. This meeting, however, never materialized and the CTLDC informed Mutheiwana Mugivhi that an administrative and legally binding decision had already been taken by the Limpopo Premier in 2012. In an answering affidavit, the chairperson of the CTLDC, Ramokone Kgatla, claims that the applicant in the case failed to disclose various relevant facts and misrepresented some other facts. Kgatla states that the Mugivhi Royal Family was informed on 12 December 2012 of the decision of the Limpopo Premier to appoint and recognise Mviseni Vincent Mugivhi as senior traditional leader at Ha-Mutsha. As far as the refusal of the CTLDC to hold public hearings is concerned, Kgatla says that they had obtained legal advice on the matter and took a view that “it had no power or authority to adjudicate the Mugivhi chieftaincy dispute as there was an administrative decision taken by the Premier of the Limpopo Province.” The CTLDC advised the applicant to file a review application challenging the Premier’s decision. In his affidavit, Kgatla says that various duly constituted commissions of enquiry were established and made recommendations as to who the senior traditional leader should be. He also argues that, prior to the Premier’s
making his recommendation, he had consulted the House of Traditional Leaders which, in turn, had consulted the Mugivhi Traditional Royal Family. According to him, he and other officials only discovered shortly before the October 2014 hearings that the Premier had already appointed Mviseni Vincent Mugivhi as traditional leader. “I am advised that the legal position is that when an administrative action is taken, whether it is right or wrong, it has to be set aside on review by the High Court,” he states. The lawyer representing MutheiMviseni Vincent Mugivhi. wana Joseph Mugivhi, Mr Vuledzani Mathivha, said on Tuesday that they were in the process of preparing their heads of argument and, once these were finished, they would push for a date for the court hearing. He was confident that the case would be heard towards the latter half of this year. According to Mativha, they will dispute the authenticity of the letter from the Premier wherein it is announced that Mviseni Vincent Mugivhi was appointed as the new traditional leader. Mathivha described the document as fraudulent and said the Premier could not have issued it in terms of the relevant laws. The Mugivhi Royal Council also reacted and expressed their concern over the matter. The chairperson of the royal council, Mr Stephens Mugivhi, said that decisions regarding the chieftainship or vuhosi should be made by the family. He said the title was the property of the family and “the appointment of the successor will thus be the responsibility of the Mutheiwana Joseph Mugivhi’s legal team filed royal family.” papers in the High Court. “We want proper roads in Tshitale and Vleifontein” Hundreds of residents of the Tshitale area and Vleifontein took part in a service-delivery protest march in Louis Trichardt last Thursday. The peaceful demonstration started at the Louis Trichardt Information Centre and proceeded through the middle of the town’s central business district to the municipal offices. Led by the South African Civic Organisation (Sanco), residents presented a memorandum with their concerns to the mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi. In the memorandum, residents demand the tarring of gravel roads in villages around Tshitale, Musekwa and Khomele. They added that the area must “be rehabilitated, as we are living in a sloppy area.” The residents also demand that the the backlog in the electrification of Ramantsha village be attended to immediately and post connections in all villages within the municipality be prioritized. A
forensic investigation should also be conducted of all tenders awarded by the municipality “as tenders are benefiting the selected few,” the residents said. Sanco also demanded “the normalisation of the water supply.” Water is a source of life and a basic right, said the chairperson of the Makhado sub-region of Sanco, Mr Daniel Masindi. “During the rainy season, residents in the Tshitale area find it extremely difficult to reach their homes. Workers, learners, teachers and people who work in places further away from home are delayed for hours,” he added. The council was requested to respond to residents’ demands within 14 working days. Residents have threatened to boycott the coming general elections, should the Makhado Municipality continue to ignore the bad condition of the roads. Cllr Mutavhatsindi promised Cllr David Mutavhatsindi signs the memorandum, that they were going to respond while the Makhado sub-region chairperson of Sanco, within 14 working days. Mr Daniel Masindi, is looking on.
Residents, led by Sanco, march to hand over a memorandum of grievances to the mayor of the Makhado Municipality.
Dangerous men escape at the Malamulele court The police in Limpopo have launched an extensive search for four of the five men who escaped from lawful custody at the Malamulele Magistrate’ Courts on Tuesday afternoon. One of the escapees, Bernard Ndovhe, handed himself over to the police on Tuesday night. He is facing a charge of murder. The other four are David Madala Mhlongo, Cliff Sithole, Lucas Siweya and Thembi Simango. According to Limpopo police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto, the men,
who are believed to be very dangerous, earlier appeared for various offences, including murder, theft, rape and housebreaking. Otto said the five overpowered two police officials who were locking up them in the back of a police van. She further indicated that they drove away in the police van, which was found abandoned some 25 km west of Malamulele. “We are now looking for four prisoners, and we are also investigating the circumstances surrounding their escape,” said Otto.

Kombo Bere
The region’s upcoming star Since he is as fast as lightning, one will rarely see this young man without his bicycle. Kombo Bere is still attending school, but has grand dreams of becoming a professional cyclist. His natural talent, once he is on his bicycle, is something to behold. When he is not racing, he will also show you a trick or two (or three) if you ask. This daring young man relishes wheelies, bunny hops and obstacles, and one would think that Kombo probably started cycling before he could walk. Originally from Cape Town, this 17-year-old has been cycling since the age of 15. Shortly after his bicycle skills were discovered there, his family moved to Louis Trichardt during 2013. During this time, Kombo has made quite a name for himself in local cycling circles - offroad and on-road - and is widely regarded as one of the town’s accomplished racers. “Louis Trichardt is a great town, with really friendly people … I really enjoy living here, because it’s extremely quiet,” said Kombo. Young Kombo is not sure from which parent he inherited his cycling abilities. “I’m actually the only one in my family who does sport so passionately,” explains Kombo. His father is a professor at the University
of Venda, and his mother is a stay-at-home mom who looks after his younger brother. When his family moved here, Kombo enrolled as a student at Louis Trichardt High School. Balancing his school work with his passion for cycling is something that he takes seriously. “Balance is crucial, and I have a great relationship with most of my teachers … this really goes a long way.” Kombo follows a strict cycling programme that has been written by the Sports Institute of South Africa and cycles for a few hours almost every day. Before a race, however, he will do more exercises to prepare. “Boiled eggs before a race are not optional,” he chuckles. And then there are the funky and brightly coloured glasses that he wears with every race. These are not only a fashion choice, but also a talisman. “They are my lucky glasses,” says Kombo. Added to this is also Kombo’s gear. He recently swopped his old Momson bicycle for a brand new Scott, which has earned him a jealous stare from many a cyclist. At the beginning of this year, one of Kombo’s personal heroes, professional mountain biker
Philip Buys, approached him. This not only saw Kombo signing a sponsorship deal with Scott Factory, but he now also receives training from Philip himself. “To race and travel with him is a dream come true!” says Kombo. Comfortable on both a road and a mountain bike, Kombo says he still prefers mountain biking. It is one of his life goals to become a pro like Phil and represent South Africa as an elite cyclist.

Zozo, aka Joseph Mbidza, (musician and social commentator): “Vimba is a monster which has gripped our district with its poisonous teeth. This issue needs more of dialogue from all community structures to see that people give the police a space to do their job. Yes, it’s true that peolpe are tired of crimes.”
Brig Alex Seopa, Makhado cluster commander (SAPS): “We urge members of the community to stop all acts of mob justice. Report all incidents of crime to your nearest police station. Involving yourself in mob justice will only get you arrested and then you earn possible imprisonment and a criminal record.”
Victor Ratshibaya, Madombidzha: “No person must kill another human being. If a criminal kills, let’s assist the police in identifying and arresting that criminal. If we get to kill one who is suspected of murder, we will end up killing one another and then only one strong, powerful man or woman will remain living alone in this world.”
Tshilidzi Bulannga, Thohoyandou: “Mob justice doesn’t work at all. It just causes more and more deaths instead of solving the problem of crime. We will not have peace in this world if we support mob justice because the mob protects whomever it wants, and kills whomever it wishes.”
Mob justice... or murder?
Our readers give their views
By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The escalation of incidents of mob justice, which also results in killings, has become problematic in the district. This is also a cause of more concern to some residents and the law enforcers who want to maintain peace, unity and security in communities. Numerous incidents of vimba or mob justice have occurred so far, and in some cases suspected thieves or criminals were either stoned or torched to death. Limpopo Mirror went to the streets and asked people about their feelings on mob justice. It became apparent that the majority of people, in their personal capacity, did not support the idea of mob justice. The fact remains, however, that people are often engulfed by the situation when they hear the word “vimba” or “let’s attack the killer” (or thief), and
Masindi Nesengani, Vuwani: “I am against mob justice because people get to kill someone without concrete evidence. It’s not fair for a mob to take the law into their own hands.”
go on to cause more violence or kill the suspect in a ghastly fashion. A social worker in private practice, Bridget Mugivhi-Ramaite, indicated that people resorted to mob justice after arriving at the conclusion that law-enforcement institutions were not responding effectively to the victims of crime. “As a result, people no longer have confidence in the police or court services,” she said. “People take the law into their own hands to punish the alleged criminals in order to scare people from becoming criminals, as a way of decreasing the crime rate.” She indicated that the challenge of mob justice was that the accused people were not given opportunities to defend themselves and were therefore punished without trial. Innocent people could therefore become victims of mob justice. Mugivhi-Ramaite stated that, while crime could not be condoned, there was a need to balance one’s
Mukatshelwa Dombye, Matsila: “If you know the pain of having a family member who was killed because of allegations of theft, which were not even proved otherwise at a later stage, you would understand that this thing (mob justice) is wrong.”
emotional state with the capacity to think. “If children are taught that whoever stands as an obstacle to the community’s harmonious living should be dealt with violently or eliminated, we are therefore raising children who will be hostile, intolerant, impatient, sarcastic and murderers in their childhood as well as adult life, thus becoming prospective mob justice victims,” she said. She emphasised that mob justice will never come to a point where it will help fight the high rate of crime in the country, because children learn what they live. She called on the leadership of community groups to therefore adopt the principle that there is strength in numbers in a positive way. “They should have the ability to use their advocacy, negotiation and activism skills in order to reform or eliminate the unjust practices of the law enforcement institutions and practitioners, instead of resorting to mob justice,” she said.
Aluwani Mukwevho Netshifhire, Tshakhuma: “I don’t think mob justice will solve the high rate of crime here in our district. Instead of solving the problem, the mob kills and no justice is meted against them. To solve the problem of harbouring a criminal within a village, residents must ban that person from the village forever.”
Bardwell Mufunwaini, Lwamondo (Munna Ndi Nnyi): “We can say vimba now. But that suspected thief or murderer gets into a throng of people and we idenfy the wrong person and kill that wrong person. Vimba is not a good way to go in the fight against crime.”
Vho-Rosinah Nngwekhulu, Louis Trichardt: “I saw an incident happen in the taxi rank. A man was rushing for the bus and one person shouted vimba! Soon people surrounded the innocent man. He stopped running and asked what was wrong. And they said they thought he was a thief. I say no to any form of action which suggests jungle justice.”

be appointed at a Louis Trichardt departmental school. Mrs Adri Kloppers has been at the helm of things at Souties, as the school is more commonly referred to locally, after her official appointment by the Department of Education in April this year. She has been the interim principal of the school since November last year when the previous acting principal,
Mrs Stienie Fourie, retired. Kloppers is no stranger to the school. She started teaching at Souties in 1990, when she and her family settled here in Louis Trichardt. In the following years she got to know each classroom personally. Kloppers qualified as a teacher in 1980 as a foundation-phase teacher. She also specialised in teaching children with brain and learning dysfunctions. “Children are my passion,” said Kloppers. Another great passion of Kloppers is books - she devours books in her private time and makes no secret of her intention to convey this love of reading to her students. It was therefore no surprise that one of her first projects as the new principal was to renovate the school’s library. Following the re-opening of the
school library, Kloppers introduced the “Drop all and Read” campaign at the school. At the end of each school day, every student has to read for 30 minutes as a “reading-is-fun activity”. Furthermore, the school’s motto, Digna Sequi (aim high), will be found at the core of Klopper’s future plans for the school. “Digna Sequi is my personal motto as well.” Her vision for the school is to offer an all-inclusive education to students, based on first-world values within a caring and patriotic environment. “I want to make sure that each child gets the best education our teachers can offer. I endorse a holistic development for each learner in different areas such as academics, sports, cultural events, fun days and in general life skills,” said Kloppers.

Vhembe's executive mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, appealed to the youth to embrace the opportunities that are open to them if they want a bright future. Matibe was guest of honour during the handing over of soccer kits, soccer balls and choir uniforms to the communities of Itsani, Muledane, Shayandima and Manamani outside Thohoyandou on Sunday. The event took palce at Tshidumbi Primary in Shayandima and was part of the current Youth Month celebrations. The kits were a gesture from former Vhembe District community services general manager and Tshifhiwa Muofhe ANC branch chairperson Mr Alex Nemakonde, who is now Umzobanzi Coal and Energy's CEO in Gauteng. He gave the kits to the Tshifhiwa Muofhe ANC branch, who had identified the benefiting communities. Matibe urged the youth to take advantage of the opportunities open to them. “When we grew up, things were not that easy, but the youth of today have everything at their fingertips. Educational facilities are almost free, with food at schools and bursaries for deserving pupils, which was not the case during our time. We are today giving you uniforms as a way of encouraging you to take sports seriously." Matibe also encouraged them to take their education seriously. He later watched games by the elderly and the youth and added that he was happy for the grannies who had received kits. “This will go a long way in improving their health and we won't have diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes which are prevalent among many,” he said. Nemakonde said it was his humble contribution to the communities that he led. "I know of the hardships here and felt that we should do something to ease the situation. There is a lot of poverty here and we whom the Lord has blessed, should in turn bless others. We just hope the kits will be put to good use and that something good germinates from the donation,” he said.

Bail for young murder suspect The 20-year-old Matimba Innocent Baloyi was granted bail when he recently appeared in the Waterval Magistrate's Court in connection with a case of murder. His case was postponed to 31 July for further investigation. Baloyi was arrested after it was alleged that he had stabbed 30-yearold Rhulani Maluleke with a knife at Mbhokota village, near Elim. The incidently allegedly took place at around 03:00 on 30 May, along the footpath from a local tavern. The residents were awakened by loud screams and cries and left their homes to find out what was wrong. They found Maluleke lying dead in a pool of blood. Devine Flock Church opens heart for poor kids Pupils from poor families around Maebane were presented with complete sets of uniforms from Pastor Rose Muneri of Divine Flock Church a fortnight ago. Due to financial constraints, the young children are forced to go to school bare-footed and without any uniforms. Muneri said that the church started the project three years ago with the aim of helping disadvantaged pupils whose parents could not provide uniforms. “Our area
is one of the poorest areas in the province, and if we do not do something for our learners, some will end up dropping out of school, she said. A pupil who received a uniform, Vhahangwele Mphephu, said the gesture was motivating them to succeed in their studies. “It is hard to concentrate in class if you do not have the basic needs. What the church did for us has helped to restore our dignity and we will not disappoint the
church, our parents and our teachers. Ms Sarah Thamaha, one of the parents, said as parents they were faced with a headache whenever schools reopened. She added that they always prayed for miracles to happen. What you have done for our children is a big relief to us and our children. You eased a big burden for us, and may God richly bless you, so that you continue helping us and our children, she said.

Gospel choir needs help to reach youth through song The 22-member Gospel of Mark Church choir at Tsianda Mashamba is fast becoming one of the finest gospel groups to have come out of the Vhembe region. Their traditional Zionist melodies, which are spiced with a funky youthful touch, soothe the soul and make one want to listen for more. Group leader Lufuno Manavhela said the group was formed last year. “We are determined to make it in the music industry. We have already composed many beautiful songs which are ready to be recorded. Our main worry is that we do not have a sponsor; as you can see, we do not have even a uniform.” He added that they knew that God
Dance & Cultu
had a plan for them and that the time would come “when we will be on top there, shining and ministering through music. What we are appealing for is assistance that we can record our music.” Manavhela said that their choir was formed as a response to the spiraling crime wave in the area. “We sat down and thought that by singing we could attract many youths to the church. The trick is working as we have managed to draw many to the church. We know music is power and we are going to change the community, so watch this space,” he said. Those willing to assist the group can phone Manavhela on 071 166 2113.
The art and craft exhibition currently on at Madi a Thavha continues to attract more viewers and art lovers from around the country. The managing director at Madi a Thavha’s Dancing Fish Gallery, Marcelle Bosch, said that they had received a considerable number of visitors who came to view the art on display since the opening of this year’s exhibition on 16 May. The Dancing Fish Gallery serves as a good platform for showcasing and displaying a variety of artistic work from different, esteemed artists in the province. “Limpopo artists persist to make their mark in the big, wide world,” Bosch said. “From humble beginnings as a shepherd boy, Azwi Magoro grabbed the bronze medal in the international ‘Carving the future’ competition in China last year. He sculpted his winning piece from half a ton of Chinese silk teak in ten days’ time.” Bosch pointed out that Limpopo continually generates new talent and fresh interpretations. “Each object bears a deeper meaning and so becomes a carrier of historical tales and moral values,” she said. “Today, these CraftArt forms undergo rapid transformation in style and content. This exhibition hopes to give the Venda and Tsonga artists and crafters their own voice and place in the present-day CraftArt landscape of South Africa.” Bridget Mugivhi-Ramaite, who visited the gallery on Saturday with her two sons, Rokunda and Lufuno, said that the visit to the art exhibition was an opportunity
Madi a Thavha art & craft exhibition to witness the powerful, wordless voices of distinguished artists and crafters. “It cannot be disputed that to the creators, the exhibition provides them with an opportunity for collaboration in exposing their art/craft work and talents,” she said. “However, as a viewer of their products, I also gained a lot.” She stated that each object reflects the creator’s adventurous ideas and unwavering perseverance. In her words, the creators’ voices will live forever through those objects, serving as carriers of historical tales and nourishing the cultural roots. The artists are Mishack Raphalalani; Azwi Magoro; Avhashoni Mainganye;
Owen Ndou; Philip Rikhotso; Johannes Maswanganyi; Hendrick Nekhofhe; Albert Monyayi; Thomas Kubayi; Justice Mugwena; David Murathi; Ezerael Tavhana; Japhter Luvhimbi; Lucky Makamu; Lucky Ntimani; Collen Maswanganyi; Khathutshelo Mufamadi; Churchill Madzivhandila; Mbavhalelo Nekhavhambe; Ndwayamato Tshivhandekano; Shumani Sidogi; Mulalo Sigogo; Grace Tshikuvhe; Solmizer Malange; Sarah Tabane; Takalani Ligege; Amorous Maswanganyi; Patrick Manyike; Khathu Mafara and Pilato Bulala. The exhibition runs from 16 May to 31 October.

Funeral service company rescues struggling family
Ms Annah Mudau, sister of the former striker of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns, Daniel “Mambush” Mudau, was laid to rest at Mpheni a fortnight ago. In our photograph, the communications manager of Sundowns, Alex “Goldfinger” Shakoane (left), and Daniel Mudau carry her coffin for the burial.
In our previous edition, Limpopo Mirror published the plight of the poor Singo family of Ha-Mutsha, who were struggling to bury their loved one, Thinavhuyo Selina Singo (60), after she was murdered and her body thrown in a pit toilet. The incident which shocked the country happened at Tsianda outside Louis Trichardt. After running the story, a sympathetic reader and owner of a funeral parlour owner stepped in and assisted the family to bury Ms Singo. Fhetshima Funeral Service and Tombstones at Ha-Mutsha donated a full funeral, including an impressive tombstone, groceries and other funeral needs. The CEO of Fhetshima, Mr Fhedzani Manugu, said when learning of the situation, he went to their home to asses the situation. “I found the situation wanting. Here poverty was at its worst and we decided to assist the family to bury their loved one with dignity. We are not in this village only to make a profit, but to assist and bring about change where possible.” He added that God set up his business to help the community, more specifically those in need. “We will continue being of service to our communities, who are the source of
our business. We have assisted in many worthy community causes, the latest being the youth celebration tournament that took place last week. We are also assisting the elderly in our community in many ways,” he said. The local traditional leader, headman Konanani Mashamba, hailed the company for the good gesture.
“We have many businesses in this village, but they turn a blind eye when it comes to helping the poor community.” Mr Noel Singo, on behalf of the family, thanked the donor and the whole community who assisted them during their time of grief. The CPF chairperson, Maine VhoMatamba Mamuremi, said the family was still in dire need of help.
Singo family members, local pastors, traditional leader Fhetshima, CEO Mr Fhedzani Manugu (third from right), and his staff at the gravesite. The company conducted the full funeral free of charge.

Ramugondo (75), of Ngudza village outside Thohoyandou, passed away on Friday at the MediClinic in Polokwane after a short illness. Family spokesperson Mr Muraga Ramugondo said his death was a huge loss to his village and the Tshivhase community. Ramugondo became chief of Ngudza village in 1986, after he succeeded his father, Chief Mmbulaheni Ramugondo. “Chief Ramugondo worked as assistant secretary for the Tshivhase Territorial Council in 1961 and took part in the building of many schools around the Tshivhase area. Among them are the Tshivhase and Phiriphiri Secondary Schools. He also worked for the Department of Education in Sibasa for almost 20 years and retired in 2005,” said Ramugondo. According to him, Chief Ramugondo was the chairperson of the Tshivhase tribal council under the leadership of Thovhele Kennedy Tshivhase for almost 30 years and until his death. “Education the right key to claim fruits of democracy” A husband and father of three, Mr John Madavhu, is a vendor who has proven that perseverance and determination can turn an individual into a tested man of character. He told Limpopo Mirror that, although he had attempted to go to school, he still found himself without employment during the 1980s. It was only around 1987 that he had decided that the killing of poverty and hunger needed a stronger man. “I was that stronger man, in that I had a plan of selling some articles such as earrings and belts in the streets of Louis Trichardt town,” he said. “I borrowed some money from family members and bought my first stock and started my business.” However, he had not known that there were bylaws which governed hawkers and stall-operators in town. He found himself operating his business in the wrong spots, and the police would confiscate his stock. “Those were hard times for me,” he shared. “I had to get some money to buy back my stock from the police and start from the beginning.” Madavhu said that he was the kind of a man who had stood the test of time. “Each year I learn new tricks to expand my business,” he said. “But sometimes it’s not just about expanding my business; one also needs to scout for new stuff to sell as a way of keeping the business running.” This hawker, who sells an assortment of handy products such as belts, beanies, warm gloves, necklaces, sunglasses and keyholders, has mentored at least six other men and groomed them for the work. “Some of the people whom I have taught to do this good work are now based in Gauteng and are
doing very well,” he said. “Two of them bought me Christmas gifts last year, and I felt very humbled.” A customer, Modina Ndlovu, said that she was a regular customer to Madavhu’s stall. “He sells quality products,” she said. “And he is understanding. Some hawkers can be arrogant.”
However, Madavhu added that he would not wish for or encourage his children to become hawkers. “It’s cold out here – if you get what I mean,” he said. “I tell all my children to go to school. I don’t want to see them doing what I am doing. They must get some education because education is the right key to claim the fruits of democracy.”

Dedicated lecturer of Vhembe TVET laid to rest The good deeds that star Vhembe TVET college lecturer Hulisani Ramunenyiwa did will live on forever. To keep her memory alive and to honour her, the college will dedicate the Performance Excellence Awards to her from next year. In his eulogy to Ramunenyiwa, the CEO of the college, Mr Frans Ramonyatse, described her as a hardworking person whose dedication to her work was worth emulating. Ramonyatse addressed hundreds of mourners who filled the Higher Grace Church auditorium during a service to bid her farewell. Ramunenyiwa (50), of Biaba outside
Louis Trichardt, passed away a fortnight ago and was buried at Tshiozwi cemetery last weekend. Her dedication to the work of God was emphasized by Higher Grace Church founder Bishop George Muhali. “She was a dedicated member here; most of what you see was her contribution. We are what we are today because of her,” he said during the sermon. He said Ramunenyiwa had left a mark at the college by performing her duties with distinction. “It was during the awards ceremony held at Khoroni Hotel last year where Ramunenyiwa was given the award as the 2014 best lecturer of the college and overall best employee of the college,
topping the more than 400 employees at the college. She has produced the best results over the last years; in fact, above 80% in three consecutive years, producing learners ready for the job market,” he said. Ramunenyiwa was appointed at Vhembe TVET’s Mavhoi Campus as part of the clothing-production programme in 1994. She was transferred to the Makwarela Campus in 2008. When the clothing programme was phased out, she was transferred to New Venture Creation and Entrepreneurship in Business Studies. She also taught entrepreneurship and business management in the financial management programme.
Close family members gather around Ramunenyiwa’s tombstone.

Started in 2010, the venture has not prospered because of a lack of funds. The leader of the group, Ms Suzan Magada, said the idea came out of boredom and the will to improve their lives as rural women. “We used to wake up and sit, sometimes visiting each other and gossiping, until some of us came up with the idea that, instead of using our time for gossip, we could do something that could improve the standard of our lives. We sat down and thought of what we could do that could change our lives, and chicken farming was the most preferred, so we went for it.” The other reason why they started the project is that they wanted to change their economic status “and not rely on handouts or trouble our spouses for simple things like tomatoes and salt at home.” She said they contributed a R100 each and that helped them to start the project. Unfortunately, some members retired on the way because there was no income and no salary. “We have been struggling for years without making headway, and we can attribute this to a lack of funds as we do not make much profit from the chickens.” Ms Maria Nemauluma added that they sometimes received big orders but could not carry them out or supply the clients as they did not have a big place to rear them. She said they would welcome any form of support to realize their dream of one day owning a big chicken company where they would also be processing chickens. Those wishing to support the project can do so by contacting them at 071 222 8116/ 083 541 8356.

R31 million road project to start in Chavani village Expectations are high among the unemployed around Chavani village, where a R31million road project was officially launched by the mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, last Thursday. Mutavhatsindi said the initiative was part of the government’s way of providing jobs. “We will do our best to make sure that all South Africans enjoy the fruit of our hard-earned freedom.” He explained that the scope of the work included the
upgrading of the gravel roads to tarred roads. The first phase of the project is a stretch of three kilometres of road, which will include storm-water drainage pipes. “The duration of the project is eight months,” he said. According to him, the construction will start soon and is expected to be completed by April 2016. About 40 jobs will be created. He said that the project would bring relief to the area as it would provide jobs.
“This is a true reflection of what service delivery is all about. We will continue to make sure that our people are being taken care of because they deserve it.” The project contractor is Kgoroganang Plant Hire, which was represented at the launch by Mr Terry Seema. He promised to deliver quality work. Chief Thomas Mkhari was on cloud nine during the occasion. “We have no doubt that this project will play a meaningful role in uplifting the standard of life of our people,” he said.

CONTACT 3 Mayor Mutavhatsindi warns against illegal connections ECO 185/60 HR 14 ECO CONTACT Makhado Municipal Mayor David Mutavhatsindi has warned the Vyeboom community to refrain from the illegal connection of water pipelines. According to reports, the Vyeboom and the Vu communities resort to the illegal connection of pipelines, claiming that the Vhembe District Municipality had failed to provide them with water tankers. Mutavhatsindi said the illegal connection of water was affecting the communities negatively. “Of course people
don’t have water, but we can’t allow illegal connections. This is not a banana republic. We know that the Vu community occupies that land illegally, but that doesn’t mean we can’t supply basic needs to them. The Vhembe District Water Services Authority is responsible for water and we have already communicated with them,” said Mutavhatsindi. Last month, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) handed over a borehole to the thirsty community of Vu. A senior tradi-
tional leader in the Vuwani area, Thovhele Vho-Nthumeni Masia, said the Vu community occupied the portion of land illegally. “The place they call Vu belongs to the Masia Traditional Authority and we don’t know Ramathithi, their traditional leader. We have already reported the illegal occupation of land to the Limpopo Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs. The Vu Makhado Municipal occupation is illegal and the Mayor David Muta matter is in court,” said Masia. vhatsindi.

“Prepare now for the final examination” the world,” he said. He pointed out that youngsters need to fend off distractions, such as discos and parties where they are enticed to imbibe liquor when they should be studying. “Such a lifestyle might seem enjoyable and feel good, but I am telling you the truth - it only lasts for a short moment and then your future gets lost in that nice time,” he said. Pupils should know what they want to be later in life and should make decisions that they will not regret. To do this, he said, pupils should surround themselves with people who can help make a difference in their future lives since bad relationships can divert one from one's intended goals. “Learning is a structural pro-
cess that involves surveying, reading, revising and the consolidation of knowledge. Give yourself enough time to study because you will never succeed if you start studying only during examination time,” he added. Mr Phumudzo Phathela of Ngudo Youth Development advised pupils to find cooperative learning groups for better results. "Consult your teachers if you feel there is something you don’t understand well. Focus on your educational achievements and avoid using any unusual sleeping substances." Phathela added that a nation without education would not develop and that the youth must use the directions of adults to become responsible members of society.

Firefighters try to put out the flames as the school burns. By Kaizer Nengovhela
Tears as fire destroys part of school Mr Lucas Mudau, chairman of the school governing body of Humula High School at Mukhomi near Malamulele, came close to tears last Wednesday after a fire destroyed part of the school. It was reported that the administration block at the school caught fire and among the items inside the block that were destroyed were five laptops, a computer, sports kit donated by the National Lottery Board as well as tinned food used in the feeding scheme. Police spokesperson Col Ronél Otto said that the administration block consisted of five offices and three storerooms. She added that there was no
security at the school. Mudau, who went to the school with Chief Mzamani Mkhomi, said the fence at the school had five holes where people could gain entrance to the yard while the gate is closed. “There were security guards two years ago but they were laid off when the government said it did not have money to pay them.” He said he had patched the holes in the fence several times, but people cut the holes again. “What has happened is very bad because pupils were to write to papers in the mid-year examinations today,” said Mudau. Chief Mukhomi said that Humula was the first school in
his area. “It was started by the community and the government took over after seeing our sweat, and now the history is being destroyed by vandals,” he said. Humula is just one of the schools in Limpopo that have been burnt recently. At least five schools were burnt in the Malamulele area during the shutdown of services by the community of Malamulele, after the community embarked on a total shutdown of services while demanding their own municipality. At all the schools, only administration blocks were burnt, which gives rise to a belief that everything was the handiwork of criminals who wanted to steal.

Tshaulu too powerful for Mubvumoni Arrows Tshaulu Powerlines beat Mubvumoni XI Arrows 4-1 at the Tshifudi Stadium on Saturday to secure a place in the semifinal stage of the Boy Nemakonde Soccer Challenge. Both sides displayed entertaining football, but Arrows’ strikers were unlucky. Arrows’ fast forward, Vhulenda Tendani, committed an unforgettable blunder in the 10th minute. He received a beautiful pass from Riane Munzhelele and hesitated for far too long to unleash, until he lost possession. That was a wake-up call to the players of Powerlines. They initiated several moves from behind and opened their account in the 14th minute. Khuliso Libago scored with a header after a corner kick that was taken by Alson Baloyi. Arrows continued to play attacking football, with Arrows playing with their backs against the wall. Powerlines increased the margin in the 24th minute. Hlengani Simango beat the keeper with a loose ball, following a scramble within the box. Arrows realized that it was not their day when they missed a fortune in the 28th minute. Rinae Munzhelele went loose from the right corner and shot wide from the edge of the box with the keeper already beaten. Powerlines put matters beyond doubt in the 39th minute. Alson Baloyi forced his way through the defence of Arrows and sent the keeper the wrong way to bring the half-time score to 3-0. Powerlines introduced Thanyani Mudzanani for Phathutshedzo Makhado early in the last half. Several rehabilitation programmes for inmates The inmates of the Makhado Correctional Centre are on the right path of rehabilitation, as demonstrated by their involvement in rehabilitation programmes. A group of prisoners has ploughed a large field and sowed a variety of vegetables such as carrots, spinach, and cabbages. The produce is thick, juicy and appetising to the naked eye. According to the Thohoyandou area management’s spokesperson, Mr Tshifhiwa Magadani, horticulture is part of the rehabilitation programmes, where prisoners learn practical skills about agricultural farming. “We need all inmates involved in this project to realise that all life comes from the soil and water,” Magadani said. “It is our strongest belief that, if given a second chance in life, offenders can change their lives from
being bad to being good and productive.” He added that the department had noted Pres Jacob Zuma’s words during his State of the Nation speech earlier this year, when he said that the youth in the country needed to be encouraged and given support to delve into agricultural farming. The head of Makhado Correctional Centre, Mr Sekopelo Ndou, said that once the courts had sentenced the offenders and brought them to prison for incarceration, it was not for the department to condemn them. “These people will serve their time and get out of this place, and face the outside world,” he said. “As a correctional centre, we therefore give them a second chance by providing them with rehabilitation programmes, so that they manage their own lives and work for themselves when
they are released.” A prisoner and group leader in the agricultural section, Vhelaphi Maswanganyi (25), said that he had realised that there was no normal life in prison. “You can’t go wherever you want, and in your own time,” he said. “But I thank the department for allowing us to learn more skills, even though we are prisoners. When I get out of this place, I will try to find a piece of land and small funding, and then start doing my farming job.” Magadani appealed to community members to welcome and accept back offenders when they are released from prison. “A crime-free South Africa starts with us, by our encouraging our brothers and sisters to rise up and do good instead of their relapsing to crime,” he said. “Let’s make them see a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Tug-of-war over striker Ruggert Nyundu Black Leopards’ top goal scorer, Ruggert Nyundu, signed a three-year contract with the team and that refuted the rumours that he was returning to Polokwane City. Nyundu (27), who joined Leopards in January from City on a loan deal, scored 13 goals that helped Lidoda Duvha qualify to play in the series of promotional play-off matches. Polokwane City’s boss, Mr Johnny Mogaladi, dismissed Black Leopards’ claim that they have signed the attacking midfielder. When addressing the media during the unveiling of three new signees at the club house in Polokwane, Mogaladi said there was no team that could sign a contract with Nyundu
without their permission. “Leopards’ boss knows exactly that he himself came to me looking for help and asked me to give them Nyundu on a loan agreement until the end of last season. We have his return clearance. Nyundu must be here on the first of July. I don’t want to reveal the terms of his contract with us, but he will play for City.” He also added that they were building a team and in two years to come, “you will see Rise & Shine collecting trophies in the PSL. Don’t count us going to the relegation. When we unveil our new jersey, we will also unveil a new player.” Leopards spokesperson Barry Ramunenyiwa confirmed the signing of Nyundu and said that the same technical team as the previous season would be in charge, as well as coach Zeca Marques, who would be leading the troops.

Gwamasenga United tops in tournament Begwa teach Young Masters a lesson The two goals scored by Gwamasenga United Brothers during the first half in the finals were enough to make them champions. This was during the annual Tsia-Mutsha Youth Tournament held last Tuesday. The tournament, meant to celebrate National Youth Day, drew hundreds of youths from Tsianda, Mutsha and surrounding villages, who spent the day in the sun. Five teams, Gwamasenga United, Gwamasenga Dangerous Tigers, Mutsha United, Mutsha Atlantis and Masokolara FC, participated in the tournament, which took the form of a knock-out. Gwamasenga United pipped Mutsha United
2-0 in finals. None of the participating teams went home empty-handed as they also received cash prizes. The big winners were Gwamasenga United Brothers, who received a soccer kit, medals for all the players, R1 000 cash and a trophy. The coordinator of the tournament, Mr Emmanuel Muofhe, said the games were aimed at keeping youths off the streets and was also a way of celebrating youth month. “As leaders of the community, we are worried about the abuse of alcohol and drugs by our youths. We are deeply concerned about teenage pregnancies, which could result in our youth being infected by dreaded sexually transmitted
diseases.” He also warned the youth that their wrongdoings could let them end up in jail. He said that they would have organized a better tournament with more sporting codes, but were disappointed by local businesses that did not support them. “We are now urging all businesses in the villages to come on board, so that we have a better tournament next year,” he said. Mr Thomas Nevhutalu, another organizer, said that the event would not have kicked off without the support of businesses such as Vhugi Protection Services, Blue Rain Funerals, Lufhade Brick and Sand and Fhetima Funeral Services, who donated generously.

The local golf challenge was hosted at the Soutpansberg Golf Club, and divisional winners qualified to participate in the Sanlam Regional Finals that will be played in August. The winner of each division at the regional finals will qualify for an all-expenses paid trip to the Sanlam

He was followed by Fanie Kotze in second place with 30 points and André Fogwell with 28 points in third. The B-division was won by Thinus Pretorius with 41 points, Anton Pretorius with 38 in second place and André Leeb with 37 on a count out. Maarten

Lidoda Duvha prepare for new season As part of their preparations for the new season, Black Leopards conducted trials for new players at the Thohoyandou Stadium last week. According to the team’s assistant coach, Mr Joel “The Prophet” Masutha, the players who were selected during the trials will go for final assessment when the team resume their normal training next Thursday, 2 July. The players were given a month-long leave to rest after playing their final promotional play-off
match against Moroka Swallows at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Sunday, May 30. Masutha stated that the team’s head coach, Mr Zeca Marques, would decide on the players who would be offered employment contracts when he came back from leave next Thursday. Asked about the quality of the players he had selected during the trials, Masutha indicated that they had selected the cream of the Vhembe district. The team’s chairman, Mr David Thidiela, assured the supporters that they were not going to release any of last season’s regular players. He agreed, however, that they would let a number of players go, but only those who were less known. According to him, all their players who were regulars last season were still contracted to the club. He further revealed that their aim was to build on the foundation which they had laid the previous season. He said that their plan was to finish their league programme on top of the log and gain automatic promotion to the elite league next season. Black Leopards participated in the promotional play-offs for two seasons in a row, failing to gain promotion by a whisker in both instances. They lost 1-2 to Polokwane City at the Giyani Stadium in their deciding match last year. Jomo Cosmos and Black Leopards finished their promotional play-off matches with seven points each this year, but Cosmos were promoted to the Absa Premiership League by virtue of having one Leopards’ assistant goal more than Lidoda coach, Mr Joel “The Prophet” Masutha. Benny’s in finals of U/12 championship The Vhembe-based Benny’s Sports Development Academy is working hard to win the national finals of the U/12 Danone Nations Cup tournament tomorrow (Saturday). The event will take place at the WJ Clements Stadium in Reiger Park, Boksburg. The winning team will represent South Africa in Morocco in the World Finals of the competition later this year. Mr Mandla ‘Shoes’ Mazibuko, president of the South African Schools Football Association (Sasfa), believes the Danone Nations Cup plays an important role in introducing players at this age to competitive soccer. “We know that the stakes are very high at this level, as the ultimate prize is the opportunity to carry the national flag at the World Cup level. We trust that the winning school will be good ambassadors and will come back home with
new knowledge about the world and about themselves.” The aim of the tournament, worldwide, is getting children to believe in their dreams, says Danone South Africa’s Ms Sandra Dorville. “Football has the power to make dreams come true, to lift people out of their everyday circumstances. We want children as young as this to realise that,” she said. Mr Mbishi Mokoena, coach of Benny’s Sports Development Academy, believes his school has an advantage because they have hostels and the players live on the school premises. “Since winning our provincials, we have been focusing on training. We want the team to come to the nationals prepared to the maximum,” he said. He identifies a lack of goals as a problem for the team in the past. “We have been mainly paying at-
tention to our strikers, but during our provincials we didn’t create a lot of opportunities for goals. Three of our games we won via penalties and we are not happy about that.” The participating schools are: Lukholo Junior Secondary School - 2nd time national finalists (Eastern Cape), Nelson Mandela Primary School - 2nd time national finalists (Free State), Bree Primary School, 2009 world final winners (Gauteng), Mophela Primary School (KwaZulu-Natal), Daniye Higher Primary School - 2013 national winners (Mpumalanga), Kgetleng Primary School - 2nd time national finalists (North West), Roodepan Primary School - 2nd time national finalists (Northern Cape), Restvale Primary School (Western Cape) and Benny’s Sports Development Academy (Limpopo).

“
I was robbed - Ndlovu ”
By Kaizer Nengovhela Oscar Chauke proved that he was not the South African featherweight champion by default when he successfully defended his title against Prince Ndlovu at the Giyani Community Hall last Saturday evening. Chauke beat Ndlovu on points over 12 rounds. He approached the fight aggressively, giving his challenger no time to breathe. The first two rounds undoubtedly went Chauke’s way, but Ndlovu made amends in the next three rounds, when Chauke was cornered several times. After the event, Ndlovu says he had been cheated, “especially by the referee’s actions, which influenced the judges’ decision.” He added that he needed a rematch as soon as possible. “I slipped four times because of water in the ring, not because of punches. Referee Sylvia Mapaila, however, counted. She even fell because of the same problem of water in the ring.
Instead of mopping up the water, they let us continue with the fight.” He added that he had dominated the fight from the onset and regarded himself as the champion, “because everyone could see how I outclassed Chauke.” Oscar Chauke said that he was ready if Ndlovu needed a rematch. He said it was a pound-for-pound fight, where he showed his jabbing skills and professionalism. “I have defended my title and that’s it,” he said. The main supporting bout between Johannes Peterson and Renson Hobyane, which was scheduled over eight rounds, lasted for only three. It was evident from the start that Peterson would be lucky if he survived until the end of their super middleweight division bout, as Hobyane was all over him. The referee came to Peterson’s rescue when he stopped the fight in the third round. At that stage, Hobyane was throwing killer punches at Peterson from all angles. In the only female bout for the evening, the South African
bantamweight champ, Bukiwe Nonina, convincingly beat her Zimbabwean counterpart, Diana Makumbe, on points. Makumbe was Nonina’s punching bag for the better part of the fight, which lasted eight rounds. Although it was a non-title bout, the featherweight division fight between Sydney “Skeleton” Maluleke and Tawanda Chigwida was mouthwatering. Maluleke and Chigwida exchanged hot blows from the first round and after eight gruelling rounds, Maluleke was declared the winner on points. Chigwida is the Zimbabwean champion. Godfrey Nemukongwe was simply the best in his featherweight bout against Pfariso Neluvhalani. The fight provided four rounds of maximum entertainment. The tournament was staged by Hlanganisa Sports Promotions, in conjunction with the Greater Giyani Municipality. The promoter, James Mathonsi, said it was a spectacular tournament that had revived boxing in Limpopo.
