Sewe maande nadat ‘n bootongeluk haar verlam en in ‘n koma gelos het, is Heidi-Lene Jonck (23) optimisties en vol vertroue dat sy volkome sal herstel. Sedert haar die bootongeluk op die Albasinidam om 11 Maart vanjaar, het Heidi-Lene al ‘n ver pad gekom. Sy het veral goeie vordering getoon sedert sy oorgeplaas is na die Lynnmed Sub-Akute Hospitaal in Pretoria waar sy sedert Junie behandel is. Hieroor stem sy en haar sussie, Elze-Marie du Preez, saam. Elze-Marie en haar man, Hagar, het vir Heidi-Lene vanaf die ouderdom van 12 jaar grootgemaak, ná die dood van hulle ma. Alhoewel Heidi-Lene deur die dokters aanbeveel is om ten minste tot die einde van Desember in die hospitaal te bly, het dit net te duur geword vir die familie. Dit het hulle bykans R50 000 per maand gekos om haar daar te hou. Derhalwe het Heidi-Lene op 30 September teruggekeer huis toe. Die lang rit van Pretoria na Louis Trichardt was emosioneel dreinerend. Dit was eweneens net so stresvol om vir Heidi-Lene uit die motor tot in die huis te kry. Dit was juis in hierdie stadium dat Elze-Marie gesê het sy wil eerder die handdoek ingooi. “Ek het nie gedink ek sal dit kan hanteer nie,” het Elze-Marie gesê. Vandag is dit egter duidelik dat Heidi-Lene fluks op pad is na herstel, alhoewel dit maar stadig gaan. Alhoewel dit moeilik is, is sy vasbeslote dat sy weer haarself sal kan versorg. Voor die ongeluk was sy gewoond daaraan om alles self te doen. Sy het gewerk en het haar eie blyplek gehad – totaal onafhanklik. Heidi-Lene probeer altyd positief bly, alhoewel sy maar somtyds depressief voel. Sy het gesê dat daar ‘n tyd was wat sy geglo het dat sy nooit weer sou loop nie. Ná haar ongeluk het sy ‘n drukseer in die Pietersburg Hospitaal opgedoen op haar voet, wat vir vier maande daar gebly het. Daarna het ‘n

Mr Ernest Mammba, chairman of the Mammba Metal Group (MMG), was quick to respond to the Zoutpansberger’s report last week that many questions existed regarding his launch of the “biggest” mine in South Africa on 22 September this year. “We are very disappointed. In the article, a lot of things are wrong,” said Mammba during a visit to the newspaper’s office early Monday morning. He did, however, indicate that his investor had years of experience in the mining industry. “This guy has got 24 mines now as we are speaking ... it is not a new company,” said Mammba. Mammba admitted that they indeed had only a prospecting licence. Regarding his comment that they could be operational within two months, he explained that this referred to the granting of their bulk sampling application. Should they be granted this, they would be able to mine up to a certain tonnage. Mammba said that the granting of this application could happen within the next couple of weeks and that the sale of the mined tonnage would help fund the mine. “Everything is ready. All the equipment is there,” said Mammba. But even though all the equipment might be ready, a lot of legal processes still have to unfold. Mammba indicated that they had started with their application for a mining right. Until this right is granted, no mining will be allowed. The process is also subject to the granting of a water license by the Department of Water and Sanitation. These processes could take months, if not years. Despite this, Mammba has high expectations for the mine. Their prospecting license makes provision for the prospecting of chrome ore, coal, copper ore, diamonds, gold, iron ore, manganese ore, nickel ore and platinum. They have already found some of the minerals applied for, such as iron ore, manganese and lime. “The total value of the mine would be R50 billion plus,” said Mammba. “Most of the operations will be open-cast, but we are going to be opening more than 60-something shafts,” added Mammba. Mammba said that he would like to put residents’ concerns at ease regarding the proposed mine. “What we can tell the people is that we are ready. The mine is coming to them. What we are waiting for is for the Royal Council and Thovhele Tshivhase to give us the go-ahead as soon as he has finalised speaking to the other villages who are affected … we are also waiting for a mining right and our bulk sampling … [as for time] this will depend on communication between the DMR, us and the tribal council … we must work hand in hand,” said Mammba The mine is to be situated on the farm Chibase 213 MT in the Thulamela District, comprising 13 043 hectares. It is tribal land under the control of Thovhele Tshivhase, situated some 30 km west of Thohoyandou and including villages such as Mukumbani, Murangoni, Tshidzivhe, Tshilungwi, Tshiheni, and Tshiavha. The farm is also subject to several land claims. As recently as 10 August this year, notice was given in the Government Gazette in terms of the Restitution of Land Rights that an amendment was made to Gazette notice 647 of 2017 that a further eight individual claimants had lodged claims against the farm. The eight names form part of an ever-growing number of claimants on the farm. In the Government Gazette of 10 February 2017, a similar notice appeared, indicating that 19 more claimants were added.

SPCA urges people not to shop but rather adopt By Jo Robinson

The Louis Trichardt SPCA is encouraging people to adopt an animal rather than buying or accepting a “free to good” home one. The SPCA’s Lesley Gaigher shared her thoughts on the subject with the Zoutpansberger, as well as some of her motivation to do the work that the SPCA staff and volunteers continue to do for animals. “Rescue,” she says, “is not just a word, it’s a promise.” Lesley explains that acting on the feeling that you have been called to help animals means that you will experience a rollercoaster ride of emotions every day. “Wait, no!” she says, “from one minute to the next. Unless you’ve spent some time volunteering at an animal shelter, you will not comprehend the highs, so exhilarating that you feel like you can fly, when a broken soul is mended and finally adopted to a home fully deserving of that awesome animal’s unconditional love. But the down side is that your heart will break over and over again.” Lesley says that she has heard many people saying that they could not bear to visit the SPCA; that their hearts would not be able to handle it. She urges people to make the effort to do just that, though … to visit the SPCA to adopt their new pet, even if it hurts not to be able to rescue all of them. One is help enough. “Can you imagine how those animals must feel, looking out?” she asks. “Hoping that maybe this time they will be the chosen one and be rescued, taken home, and loved…” Lesley points out that not thinking about the sad statistics and hoping that other people will choose to adopt at

the SPCA while you go to a breeder to pick out your new puppy or take that “free to a good home” kitten from a Facebook post might be easy. You may ask yourself what difference the one animal you take makes in the bigger picture. But, that breeder will probably breed again, she says, and that cat’s owners will not bother to have her sterilized because it was so easy to find homes for the previous litter. The SPCA urges residents to sterilise their kittens and puppies at the right time, rather than allowing their inaction to add to the problem of overpopulation. Lesley says that, due to unscrupulous breeding, the scales have tipped and that way more animals than good homes for them to go to currently exist. “The fact is,” she says, “when you decide to adopt an animal, you save more than just the one life you take responsibility for. Because the animal will be sterilized on the SPCA’s account, there will never be unwanted litters. Because you have freed up a space in the kennel, there will be another one we would be able to give more time to find that perfect home for him or her.” Lesley would like to remind residents to come to the SPCA’s auction on 2 November as advertised in the Zoutpansberger again this week. Finally, she shares a little bit of inspiration by Loren Eisley. “One day, a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a young boy picking something up and throwing it into the ocean. Don’t get too comfortable going to bed at night By Jo Robinson

Several concerned residents have recently reported cases of attempted or successful burglaries to the Zoutpans berger, where property of varying value was stolen, but no injuries occurred. These crimes were mostly not reported to the police, as is common in Louis Trichardt. All of these residents have requested to remain anonymous, but one of them said that he would particularly like to share what had happened because he believed that his experience would be helpful to other people not expecting to be burgled. A homeowner in Grobler Street told the newspaper that three burglars had gained access to his home late on Saturday night. They forced open a security gate and a

wooden door with a crowbar and gained access long enough for them to make off with a wallet containing cash, jewellery, several cellphones, and a drone, before the barking of the small resident dog disturbed them enough to make them leave. The homeowner then tracked their footprints and recovered his drone, which the burglars had dropped. He told the newspaper that several attempted burglaries had occurred on Grobler Street, all involving three wouldbe intruders, including at his mother’s home next to his, between Friday and Sunday. He said the fact that he had a security gate installed inside his home stopped the burglars from entering his bedroom while he slept. His small dog also was a saviour, he said. “Even though such a small dog can’t really offer physical

protection, the noise will at least wake you up, and when your dogs are inside, they can’t be poisoned by burglars while they’re preparing to break in.” One thing all the attempted burglary reports had in common was that the victims said the same thing, “We never thought that it would happen to us.” All of them also reported that having ignored areas lacking in security or light was a mistake. The victim in Grobler Street had this to say: “Security does not have to cost thousands,” he said. You can buy cheap outside halogen lights. You can buy cheap small alarms that go off when windows or doors are tampered with. You can keep a small dog inside your home. I mostly recommend installing a security gate somewhere in your house ... that saved me this time.”

New beetle poses major threat to country’s trees By Jo Robinson

In an August media release, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) informed farmers and the public of the detection of a new pest of concern - the polyphagous shot hole beetle. So far, it has been identified across the country, including slightly north of Polokwane, and more recently in the Kruger National Park. The Zoutpansberger contacted one of the arborists in South Africa who are currently working on the identification of infestations and the control of this pest for more information. Jaco Pitzer of Arbor Care Tree Specialists in Pretoria has come to know this bug very well as it has already become a A female polyphagous shot hole borer beetle. Photo supplied. ambrosia beetle is one of a trio of cryptic species in the Euwallacea fornicatus complex and is native to Asia. The polyphagous shot hole borer (PHBS) carries in its mycangia a fungal symbiont named Fusarium euwallacea that it depends on for its survival. Mycangia are the structures in the beetle’s body that have adapted to transport its symbiotic fungi in spore form. The beetles then drill into host trees where the live wood is used by them to farm the fungus, which they and their larvae eat. The beetles create tunnels and galleries that they line with the fungus and the action of the fungus, called fusarium dieback, is the cause of the trees’ death. One female can produce up to 500 eggs and these beetles can infest a large variety of trees for feeding purposes, even though they do not use all of them for breeding. Even so, many reproductive-host-tree possibilities favoured by the PSHB are available to them in South Africa, including black wattle, jacaranda, avocado, pin oak, and the white and Cape willow trees. PSHB is already a national problem, according to Pitzer. Of the hundreds of thousands of trees planted for the Greening-of-Soweto project from 2010, thousands are now infected and dying. Dr Trudy Paap of the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) initially discovered the PSHB in South Africa. On a routine study for diseases in the KwaZulu-Natal Botanical Gardens in Pietermaritzburg, Paap found a series of infested trees. This led to the identification of the beetle in 2017. Only then was it discovered that an adult specimen of this beetle had been found previously by biologists Z Shoba and M Ziganira in March 2012 in KwaZulu-Natal, not far from the Durban harbour. Studies have shown that invasive pests are usually brought in via the importation of live flora, although many reports about PSHB state that it probably came in with wooden packaging. Whichever way PSHB arrived, it is now known to have been present in South Africa as far back as 2012. The two biologists who found it failed to identify it at the time and thus loaded an image of it, together with its genetic code, onto the BOLDSystems database, which is a sequence database specifically devoted to DNA barcoding. This information stayed there, unrecognised, until the finding of the infested tree in the Pietermaritzburg Botanical Gardens by Dr Paap. This is not simply a problem for farmers. Trees dying in their tens of thousands over a short period of time in urban areas will affect both heat and carbon dioxide levels, and thus the well-being of the inhabitants as well before replanted trees will be big enough to make any impact. She thanked all members of the community who contributed to her fundraiser and collection of food parcels for these children. “As the mother of a child with cancer I know how financially draining it can be when you have a child with cancer, and I saw an urgent need to try and help in some way,” said Cherese. Fifty basic food parcels were made up and delivered to the Polokwane TLC Children’s Cancer ward, thanks to Oasis Water of Louis Trichardt, who supplied the transport. “I would also like to thank each person who contributed towards my food drive. Spoegkobra volop in Soutpansberg Omgewingsnuus

Die Mosambiekse Spoegkobra (Naja Mossambica) is ook een van die slangspesies waarvoor inwoners van die Soutpansberg maar moet katvoet voor loop gedurende die warm somermaande. Volgens plaaslike slangvanger en -kenner Jan “Slang” van Rooyen is dié kobra heeltemal die teenoorgestelde as die wipneuskobra waaroor die Zoutpansberger voorverlede week geskryf het. “Hierdie gemiddelde grootte kobra kan ongeveer 1.5 meter lank word, maar die algemene lengte is ongeveer 1.2 meter. Anders as die wipneuskobra, spoeg hierdie kobra sy gif as hy homself wil verdedig. Die gif kan tot twee meter redelik akkuraat in die oë van ‘n vyand gespoeg word. Troeteldiere loop in die algemeen deur as dié slang teëgekom word,” het hy gesê. Van Rooyen het verduidelik dat die spoegkobra uitgeken kan word aan die olyfbruin kleur op die rug en die salmpienk pens met swart bande op die keel. “Ongelukkig hou hierdie slang daarvan om in wonings in te gaan. Hulle is hoofsaaklik aktief deur die nag,

maar soms ook deur die dag en is verantwoordelik vir baie byte in sy verspreidingsgebied, waarvan baie in huise gebeur,” het Van Rooyen gesê. Die gif van die spoegkobra is hoofsaaklik sitotoksies met ligte neurotoksiese komponente. “Dit is ‘n baie aaklige byt wat gepaard gaan met baie pyn en weefselskade. Sterftes is redelik skaars, maar ‘n byt kan jou hele lewe verander deurdat jy moontlik ‘n ledemaat of weefsel kan verloor,” het Van Rooyen gesê. Die goeie nuus is egter dat die teengif doeltreffend is. “Maak egter seker dat ‘n dokter met slangbyt kennis genader word, anders kan die skade baie groter wees. Met spoeggif in die oë moet die oë baie deeglik uitge spoel word vir omtrent 10 tot 15 minute. Gif op die vel kan geen skade veroorsaak nie, tensy dit op ‘n oop wond kom,” het Van Rooyen gesê. Spoegkobras maak aktief jag op skurwe paddas, soogdiere en selfs ook akkedisse en ander slange. “As daar op ‘n Mosam biekse Spoegkobra afgekom word, bly ten minste vier meter weg. Hou ‘n oog op die slang en kontak iemand om die slang te

verwyder. Moenie ‘n kans vat om die slang te nader nie, dis nie die moeite werd nie,” het Van Rooyen gewaarsku. Van Rooyen het inwoners uitgenooi om hom te skakel by tel. 081 217 9213 vir meer inligting oor slange. Die Louis Trichardt Rolbalklub het hulle opregte dank uitgespreek teenoor twee van hulle lede, Barry Fourie (links) en Carel Volschenk (regs), wat goedgunstiglik tien herbruikbare telborde (vyf elk) vir die klub geborg het. Die borgskap sluit ook die trollies in waarop die borde na en van die baan gesleep kan word. Afgeneem saam met Barry en Carel is die president van die klub, Kittie de Bruin. De Bruin het gesê dat die klub al ‘n geruime tyd ‘n behoefte aan die borde gehad het en dat die skenking baie, baie waardeer word.

Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se o.16- meisieskrieketspan het vanjaar deelgeneem aan die provinsiale o.19-liga en as wenners uit die stryd getree. Hulle het op 17 Oktober in die finaal te staan gekom teen Hoërskool Hans Strijdom. Hans Strijdom het eerste gekolf en 100 lopies aangeteken. Triegies het egter 103 lopies aangeteken om te wen met slegs een paaltjie plat. Die span het hul dank uitgespreek teenoor afrigters Marie van Niekerk en Naas Pohl.

Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se fietsryers wat erkenning gekry het vir hul fietsryprestasies die afgelope jaar. Eerste balkies as provinsiale wenners is toegeken aan Herman Veldman, Joshua Swart, Wulf Schwerdtfeger, Carla Enslin, Dembe Ramuhuyu, Jordan Mocke, Douglas Piorek, Brandon Kruger, Brandon Brandt en Blessing Mavhungu. Eerste balkies vir deelname aan die nasionale kampioenskap het ook aan Michelle Steyn en Danelle Venter gegaan. Tweede balkies as provinsiale wenners het gegaan aan Suné Beukes, Eugene Thlou, Zoe Lubbe, Roan le Roux, Reghardt Steyn, Bernardt Futcher, Richard Schwerdtfeger en Henco Brown, terwyl tweede balkies vir nasionale deelname toegeken is aan Dominique Nel, De Wet Du Toit en Ditau Mandobe. Eerste erekleure (derde balkie) is deur Vossie van Zyl, Te-wan Naudé en Calvin Lee (lid van provinsiale span) verwerf, terwyl tweede erekleure as lid van die provinsiale span toegeken is aan Rohan Cronjé, Jennavieve Truter en Eliz-Mari Pretorius. Die Louis Trichardt Rolbalklub se besigheidsliga het verlede Donderdag by die klub begin. Die afgelope paar jaar het die gewildheid van die liga so gegroei, dat 14 spanne hierdie keer besluit het om mekaar die stryd aan te sê. Die liga word oor drie wedstryde beslis, met die finaal wat op Donderdag, 1 November, gespeel sal word. Bridge Auto het ‘n vroeë voortou in die liga geneem, met die span van Raymond Glas in die tweede plek en die Bowling Legends derde. Louis Trichardt High School brought home several medals after competing at the Marius Lengton Athletics Memorial meeting on 20 October at Tom Naudé High School in Polokwane. Mathilda Tebogo Masekela (front left) won second place in the U/16 triple jump, earning a silver medal. Mudodzwa Luvha (front right) brought home a bronze with his third place in the U/16 long jump. Lo’Care Madzhie (back left) achieved a first in the U/16 high jump event, winning a gold medal, and Johannes Joubert (back right) won two gold medals with wins in the U/17 long-jump and triple-jump events.

Agt van Laerskool Louis Trichardt se tweekampatlete het Saterdag, 20 Oktober, deelgeneem aan die Limpopo Tweekamp-kampioenskap by Mitchell House in Polokwane. Dit was egter nie net die skool se leerlinge wat deelgeneem het nie, maar ook een van die skool se onderwysers, mnr. Stoffel du Toit, en ‘n ouer, mnr. Gert Nortjé. Die agt kinders het ingesluit Alyssia Venter, Reynard Wilson, Junél Joubert, Stefanie Venter, Willem Schutte, Amaris Nortjé, Mario Nortjé en Owen Collins. Van die kinders wat Top 5 plekke ingepalm het, was Marco (5de), Amaris en Alyssia (4de) en Junél en Stefanie (3de). Stoffel was die eerste junior veteraan man en stel ook ‘n nuwe provinsiale rekord op. Gert (afwesig) was op sy beurt die eerste senior veteraan man en stel ook ‘n nuwe provinsiale rekord op. The first matches in the Limpopo Impala Cricket Union’s promotional league start this Sunday. Two Louis Trichardt-based teams will be competing at their home venues in the first round.
