Tank of death By Kaizer Nengovhela

They went to the bush to play, but their trip of fun ended in their tragic death when an old water tank they were playing in caught fire. Scores of bemused villagers watched on in disbelief as the burnt bodies of two young friends, Hangwani Malange (5)

and Mukhwethwa Tshidada (6), were retrieved from the burnt tank at Vari-Ha-Mutonga last Wednesday. At this stage, the circumstances around the death of the two boys are very vague and the spokesperson for the police at Waterval, W/O Kedibone Mabatha, said that the police had opened an inquest docket. He

also appealed to the parents to take care of their children The father of Hangwani, Mr Abraham Malange, said that the family was battling to come to terms with the tragedy. “We are greatly saddened by this deaths. Everything is in the hands of God,” he added. He mentioned that the family had accepted that the incident was beyond human

control and they blamed nobody for the two’s death. “Children want to play and they should not be denied the right to do that. Let them play in a safe environment where they will not be exposed to dangers like what happened to our child,” he said. Vhamusanda Vho-Ndishavhelafhi Netshia said the whole community was saddened by the incident. “We never

Prison warders on two-day strike The Kutama Sinthumule maximum security prison warders embarked on a two-day strike last Tuesday as a result of a dispute between South African Custodial Management (SACM) and prison warders at Makhado (Louis Trichardt). More than 400 warders embarked on the strike and activities at the prison were severely disrupted when warders forced the management off the prison premises. Police and armed guards from Interactive Security Company had to be called in as chaos erupted inside the prison. More than 2 000 prisoners apparently tried to break down doors with

the intent to get food and medication, which they could not get as a result of the strike, said warders who wished to remain anonymous. The warders said that they started with the sit-in last Tuesday night. They undertook to remain on the premises until they were addressed by the prison management. The warders complained about pension issues and some claimed to have worked at SACM for 12 years without accumulating a sizable pension. Warders said they were unhappy about the management´s failure to consult with them on pressing issues. They added that the prison management

had failed to act in terms of the recommendations on their grievances and that was why the members had gone on strike. “We negotiated in good faith, but when it came to implementation, they acted in bad faith,” the warders said. They also demanded that the company’s headquarters be relocated from Johannesburg to Makhado, so as to best serve the workers. The warders returned to work last Friday after they had resolved their grievances with the management of the prison. Efforts to get comment from SACM director Indiran Pillay were not successful as his phone kept on ringing.

One of the prison warders is escorted away by security officers and instructed not to talk to the media.

Police investigate death of Somalian The merciless killing of a Somalian man in Thohoyandou over a lost R4 000 last Wednesday evening has left members of the close-knit community in extreme shock. To add insult to injury, it is alleged that Mr Vincent Abdulla (29) was killed by a fellow countryman. Abdulla, who works at a restaurant in Thohoyandou, is alleged to have been killed by a customer who suspected him of stealing his money while he was eating at the restaurant. It is alleged that the customer followed him to his room after work at around 19:00 and accused him of having stolen his money. An argument is said to have ensued, whereupon Abdulla was killed. After the confrontation he had a big gash in his throat and died at the scene. The suspect is said to have fled the scene after the incident. This latest murder has opened up a can of worms about the alleged vicious life led by Somalian nationals in the Vhembe area. A year ago, another Somalian was viciously hacked by his countrymen and died of his injuries in the Nzhelele area. Several violent incidents involving Somalians have also occurred in Thohoyandou. Some of the incidents took place in full view of other people in the central business area. In most cases, pangas and knives are used in the attacks, which shows that they are planned as the perpetrators carry the weapons with them. “We are greatly saddened by what happened. There are always fights here among our own people. We are surprised as to what could be happening with our people. Instead of protecting each other, they are always fighting and stabbing each other with knives,” said one of the concerned members of the Somalian community in Thohoyandou. The man said Somalian nationals were always in the firing line as they had to face robberies and attacks at their businesses in villages. “We were supposed to be united, so that we could fight off a common enemy of robbers terrorising us on a daily basis, but it seems as if we are even more divided among ourselves; we cannot protect each other,”

said the man. An Indian trader who has a business not far from where the incident happened said the man could have lived, had they phoned the police and ambulance immediately after the stabbing. The shopkeeper added that business was becoming slow in the area as customers were afraid that they could be caught in the crossfire when fighting started.“We are badly affected by what is happening here, and the sooner the law takes its course here, the better. We cannot withstand this type of situation where there are fights on a daily basis,” he said. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo confirmed the incident. “As of now, we cannot divulge the cause of the argument between the men, and that will only become known in the course of our investigations,” he said. Malelo added that they had opened a murder case and that they hoped to arrest the suspect as he is known to them.

The body of Mr Vincent Abadulla is taken to a waiting mortuary van after the killing.

A large number of young ones in the Vhembe region braved the cold weather on Saturday to attend the Kiddies wild fun explosion in Shayandima. Municipal officials on sports tour At least 70 employees of the Makhado local municipality left last Thursday to participate in the week-long all-Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association games in the Buffalo City municipality. They will participate in several sporting codes, and the aim of the games is that municipal employees from various municipalities in the SADC region can exchange work-related ideas and establish professional networks. Last Wednesday, Mr Patrick Munyai from UMS donated sports bags to the participants. Ramovha survives tragedy at TB Joshua’s synagogue masonry. “It was dark and hot, and I couldn’t see any other person around me,” he said. “I was trapped inside a ‘bubble’ of debris, and I heard voices cry out around me. Someone cried about his hand, foot or arm, while another cried about her neck. I was not hurt by any of the rubble, though.” The temperature was around 45º C. “The hot temperature was getting the better of me, draining me of all strength and weakening my system,” he said. “I had never felt so lost in my life. I whispered the name ‘Jesus’ several times and started feeling oxygen rushing in and thought there was a hole through which I could get out. I believe this oxygen supply was a miracle.” He crawled out of the tunnel that the rescuers had dug and saw light for the first time after 13 hours of frustration and pain. “There were many of us who survived and we were all taken to hospital,” he said. After spending a night in hospital, he was discharged and spent the rest of Saturday, Sunday and Monday attending church. “I boarded my flight on Tuesday and got home on Wednesday,” he said. “Now my duty is to testify about my survival.” Ramovha sent his condolences to the families of all the people who died when the building collapsed. “I take solace in the fact that those people didn’t die while being involved in something stupid; they were working for God,” he said. The Presidency issued a statement

on 16 September, following the tragedy, in which it said at least 67 South Africans had died in the tragedy. “Our thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues who have lost their loved ones in this heartbreaking tragedy,” said Pres Jacob Zuma. “The whole nation shares the pain of the mothers, fathers, daughters and sons who have lost their loved ones. We are all in grief.”

A South African author of Christian literature, Mr Khathutshelo Ramovha (27), survived the tragedy that hit the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), when the headquarters’ building collapsed on 12 September. According to a statement at least 84 people were killed in the incident. The SCOAN, in Nigeria, is headed by its founder, preacher TB Joshua. Author of He Is More Than Just a God, Ramovha spent 13 haunting hours trapped in the rubble before rescuers could find and lead him out through a tunnel which they had dug. Ramovha hails from Tshirolwe in Nzhelele. “I arrived at the church’s residence for foreign guests on 9 September and spent two days attending spiritual lectures,” he recounted. “The lectures were all about having faith and being prepared for any kind of challenges and hardships.” After Friday’s lecture, Ramovha and other guests went to the dining hall for lunch. He collected his plate of fish, pap and salad and came to sit down at a table. Before he could lift up a spoonful of pap to his mouth, he heard the sound of frightened voices from all sides of the dinning hall. “The spoon fell from my fingers as I saw the building and the surface on which I was standing, collapse,” he said. “I can’t forget the look on believers’ terrified faces, and their screams are still fresh in my ears.” Ramovha passed out. He regained consciousness after some time, enclosed underneath the rubble and

When a spate of crime starts to frustrate community members, they often resort to vigilante acts. Unfortunately, family members and friends of the perceived culprits also become victim of such attacks. In the Kuruleni village outside Ha-Mashamba, family members of Charles Tshabalala (28) were chased away from the village. Community members allege that Tshabalala had been terrorising the community for the past seven months and they took out their wrath on his family. Tshabalala was released from prison on Friday (September 12). It is further alleged by aggrieved community members that, when Tshabalala arrived back at the village, he assaulted a young man for apparently reporting him to the police. The injured man was admitted to hospital and received treatment for the injuries sustained. The following day, the furious

community members went to Tshabalala's family and chased them away from the village. They had to seek refuge at the Levubu police station. Charles Tshabalala was re-arrested and subsequently appeared in court. He was charged with three counts of rape, assault to cause grievous bodily harm and several charges of housebreaking. “All his charges were reinstated, pending further investigations. He was sent back to custody and he will appear in the magistrate's court soon,” said Levubu police spokesperson W/O Solly Mukhola. The tension in the village reached breaking point in March this year when five community members were arrested after they had allegedly burnt down a rondavel belonging to Tshabalala. Samuel Riveli, Brian Riveli, William Pataka, Edward Gija and Nomsa Chauke were all

charged with arson. The cases against them were postponed and they must again appear in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate's Court on 2 October. The Tshabalala family told Limpopo Mirror last Thursday that the young man who was assaulted was trying to burn down their houses and they chased the man away from their home. They managed to extinguish the fire. When the family members interrogated the young man, he told them that he had been sent by members of the community. The father of Charles Tshabalala, Mr Wilson Tshabalala, said they had not done anything wrong and they did not understand why they were being chased away. “Now we don’t have a home. We have been here for almost a week now,” he said. The family, with all their belongings, is currently staying at the Levubu police station.

Passion for electronics turns into a job A curiosity about electronic goods and how they are assembled kept Thivhahangwi Nemahungoni's passion alive for years, until he decided to turn it into a job. Today, Thivhahangwi runs his small office in the heart of Thohoyandou, where he specialises in fixing electronic equipment such as keyboards, guitars, power amps, mixers and microphones. “Most of us take our aptitudes for granted,” he said. “If a child shows an aptitude for doing something like sewing, fixing gadgets or sculpturing, encourage them to focus on that.” Now, at 34 years of age, he recalls the time when he was a young boy growing up in the village. He used to take his electronic toys and old keyboards apart to see what was inside and how they operated. He also became curious about the functioning of such devices and how sound was created. “At the age of 13, that curiosity built up and I started disassembling

toys and assembling them again,” he said. “When I switched them on again, sound came out and it worked!” Soon he was repairing neighbours' radios and electronic appliances. Even churches sought his services, for whom he fixed sound systems. “I realised that I could not work without a certificate, so I obtained an electronics repair certificate from Vhembe FET College in 2005,” he added. “Between 2006 and 2009, I fixed cell phones from a street corner in Thohoyandou. I was able to

support my wife and two kids.” In 2012, Thivhahangwi decided to upgrade his business into an office where the locals could get electronic repair services with dignity. So, he did some research and finally registered his company, Sound From Galaxy Electronics. “Besides fixing electronic devices, I also do live sound engineering services,” he revealed. “I am living my dream as a fixer of all electronic sound systems and music instruments.”He added that his mission was to provide the best quality to all his clients.

Anti-apartheid couple reunite at Tshilidzini graveyard The wishes of the Smith couple, who in the previous dispensation fought fiercely against the policy of separate development, were recently fulfilled when part of the ashes of Dr Ellen Smith was buried next to her husband at Tshilidzini. Dr Nico Smith, a theologian, and his wife, Ellen, a medical doctor, spent a large part of their lives uplifting the communities of Mamelodi and Tshilidzini. At Tshilidzini, they founded a hospital and a church in 1956 and worked for many years before they relocated to Pretoria, where they founded a church in Mamelodi. To show their commitment to changing and challenging the status quo, they settled The late Dr Ellen Smith’s ashes are taken from the church to the gravesite in the black township of Mamelodi. Dr Nico Smith passed on in 2010 and, at the church yard.

in accordance with his wish, the family buried half of his ashes in Mamelodi and the rest at Tshilidzini. His wife, Ellen (87), passed on earlier this year and half of her ashes were buried at Mamelodi and the rest next to her husband at Tshilidzini. The handing over of the ashes and subsequent burial took place during an emotional church service at Tshilidzini a fortnight ago. The couple’s daughter, Maretha Laubscher, said her parents had requested them to do that before they died. “Our family has been part of these communities and we felt that we had to honour our parents’ wishes and unite them with the people they lived with, even in death. We are greatly heartened by the reception we received

here,” she added. Tshilidzini Hospital CEO Mr Mufamadi thanked the family for contributing towards the development in the area. “Through this family, many received education in this area and are now contributing positively to the country, continue the connection and hold on to the great works done by your parents,” he said. On behalf of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa’s Tshilidzini congregation, Rev Anderson Magwira thanked the family “for bringing light and fighting the demon of apartheid when it was not fashionable to do so”. During the service, the church received memorabilia from the Smith family dating back to 1956, when the hospital and church were started.

Allegations of illegal water connections have been rife in Mauluma Village in Nzhelele, leaving some of the residents angry and complaining that they are no longer getting water from their home taps. This issue has not only affected Mauluma village, however. Several communities in Nzhelele and Waterval are complaining about the same problem. A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity, for fear of victimization, said he tried to report the matter to the royal council. He said he was told that the problem was spi-

ralling out of control because of the shortage of water in the area. Several people have allegedly connected pipes illegally from the main line which connects the village’s households with the main reservoir. Although residents get water at their home taps occasionally, this has exacerbated the problem to such a extent that some are no longer getting water at their home taps at all. Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) warned those communities and appealed to the traditional leaders to cooperate with them to avoid further damage. Talking to

Limpopo Mirror on Tuesday, the municipal spokesperson, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, said illegal connections led to a huge loss of revenue to the municipality. He warned that the council had proposed a bylaw which would help eradicate the probleme. He said that if only the traditional leaders could rebuke those people and address this challenge at their royal meetings, it could be solved. He added that protecting those people was like protecting criminals whilst they were persisting to destruct the safety of the communities.

Department denies negligence in death The Department of Health in Limpopo denies any negligence, following the death of an unborn baby. This follows claims by Ms Norah Hlungwani (37), who believes that a doctor at the LTT Memorial Hospital prescribed the ‘wrong medication’, which eventually caused her to give birth to a stillborn child. Hlungwani, who is a resident of Tshiozwi in the Sinthumule area, was transferred to LTT Memorial Hospital from Madombidzha Clinic on 12 March. She claimed that a doctor at the hospital merely visually examined her and told her the unborn baby had not grown fully. “He administered two injections and said they were meant to delay ‘child delivery’, so that the child may grow to its full size,” said a weeping Hlungwani. “He said I would deliver on 27 March and not on my initial date of 16 March.” On 14 March, Hlungwani was rushed to the Madombidzha Clinic, where she gave birth to a stillborn baby girl. Ms Hlungwani confronted the doctor who had prescribed the medication to ‘delay birth’. “He

acknowledged to me and my husband that he had wrongfully given me the medication, after examining me incorrectly,” she wept. “He then apologised to us. He said we must forgive him.” Hlungwani and her husband, Mr Peter Lithole (47), felt that the doctor must compensate them. “He said he was poor and that we must sue the State,” she explained. “Then we requested to view my file, so that we could study the circumstances around my child’s death first.” According to Hlungwnai, a female official then collected the file from the records department and hid it. The Department of Health’s provincial spokesperson, Mr Macks Lesufi, said, however, that Ms Hlungwani had been properly examined by a doctor and the medication prescribed was to treat a separate condition that was discovered during the examination. “The insinuation perpetuated by the client is refuted with the contempt it deserves,” he said. Lesufi stated that the injections that Hlungwani claimed she was given to delay labour

refered to an antibiotic which was given intravenously and steroids which were administered to ensure that even if birth occured before the expected term, the child might breath normally. “[The medication] was in no way related to her false labour alarm,” he said. The department denied claims that the client’s attending doctor “had at any stage had an interaction with the client where he allegedly acknowledged prescribing the wrong medication, let alone declared poverty and advised the client to sue the department and the provincial department of health”. Lesufi added that Hlungwani’s file was never at the hospital in the first place. “Since she delivered at Madombidzha Clinic, there was no way that her file could be at the hospital,” he said. However, a weeping Hlungwani said: “I am hurt deeply. All that the department is saying is false and they are only protecting the State and their doctor. How did I have the doctor’s mobile phone numbers and his names? I stand by my story.”

Musina High tops in road safety competition Musina High School won the recent Vhembe District road safety competition and finished second in the Limpopo finals of the event. The five pupils who participated in the competition came back with trophies, certificates and a cheque of R3 000. They were recently paraded at the school’s morning assembly, where they also displayed their trophies, certificates and cheque. Before the parade, teachers and learners observed a moment of silence to remember all the people who lost their lives on South African roads. The teacher who supervised the learners to prepare for the

competition, Mr Amos Rantsu, said the competitors did two presentations, which included a model and a portfolio of evidence. “We did a model of the road infrastructure of Musina, with specific reference to challenges and interventions. Our model was done with specific reference to the N1 road from Musina to China City Wholesalers towards the Beit Bridge border post.” They analysed some access roads within the Nancefield area and identified several challenges, which include the occurrence of accidents. They also proposed the construction of overhead bridges on the N1 road.

Rantsu said they also identified the illegal removal of road signs in Nancefield location as one of the causes of accidents. “We proposed the construction of more speed humps to discourage motorists from speeding in the location.” A Grade 11 pupil, Josephine Tshiweta, who participated in the competition, said they were very happy to be recognized as one of the best schools in the province. The principal, Mr Abraham Legavha, was equally jubilant about the achievement. “We really appreciate the good work by these pupils. It is the result of team work by the pupils, teachers and parents.”

Doctorate for traffic boss

The top 12 finalists for the Miss Benny’s Care beauty contest were selected at the White Horse Guest House in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). The 12 will participate in the pageant at the Muduluni Community Hall in December. In our photo are, from left to right, Khutsvo Motimele, Elelwani Tshidada, Mpho Maemu, Mpho Masikhwa, Nontobeko Mokoena, Humbulani Tshamaano, Phophi Raulinga, Sandra Muluvhu, Hazel Siwadada, Mulalo Sinthumule, Ntwanano Makhubele and Mukhethwa Ramudzuli.

As part of the research for his master’s degree, the head of traffic of the Thulamela Municipality, Thinandavha Munwana, presented a paper at the Makerere University in Uganda in 2010. The theme of the paper was accidents in the Thulamela Municipality area. Last Friday, Munwana received a PhD during the graduation ceremony of the University of Venda. The 46-year-old said he was proud of his qualification and wanted his peers to emulate him. He was one of the 11 candidates who received their doctoral degrees. “I have fulfilled my long-standing cherished dream of achieving a doctorate,” he said. His thesis wis entitled Developing a model to integrate LDVs into rural passenger transport in the Vhembe District municipality. “Road safety has always been close to my heart and coming up with new ideas of saving lives on our roads is the ultimate goal. I knew that this could only be achieved through studying,” he said. He said that, besides being a personal achievement or a stepping stone towards greener pastures, his thesis, if implemented, could benefit the community and the government as far as informal and formal transport are concerned. “This is not my ultimate goal as I am busy

writing papers to be used in journals, so as to be in touch with people on the ground. This would go a long way in educating communities in order to save lives on our roads,” he said. Munwana added that he did not stop studying, so that he could be a role model in his career. “As a leader in the traffic section, I have to lead from the front and be a good example that with education we can achieve great things,” he said. At the ceremony, the principal of Univen, Prof Peter Mbati, said the university placed a high premium on academic projects and it was for this reason that, for the past eight years, they had invested about one billion rand in infrastructure development for quality education. During the ceremony, 584 recipients were awarded qualifications. “We are also conferring 11 doctoral degrees, the largest number at a single graduation ceremony, 79 master’s degrees, 84 honours degrees, 331 bachelors and professional degrees, and 79 diplomas and certificates.” The other resipients of doctorates are Lufuno Mavhandu, Naledzani Rasila, Ntsieni Stella Mashau, Fhatuwani Ravhuhali, Thizwilondi Mudau, Harry Mukwevho, Thakhani Takalani, Nkhangweleni Nemukula, Thinandavha Munwana, Zwodangani Mudau and Mpho Tshitangoni

Importance of Beit Bridge border under discussion Mayor Mihloti Ramoyada of the Musina Municipality and her councillors recently met with government departments to discuss service delivery at the Beit Bridge border port of entry. The meeting took place at the

border post and was also attended by stakeholders who operate within the border post. Ramoyada said the issue of migration was high on the political agenda for governments around the world. “When managed effectively, migra-

It is important that controls are applied in an open and transparent way," she added. is the biggest concern facing the future of the South African medical profession. Taking into consideration that the two youths come from indigent families whose parents cannot afford paying university tuition, we should thank the government of the day for opening up opportunities for learning to disadvantaged South Africans. We have no doubt that these two youths will represent us well in Cuba.” Future Maluleke, who stays at Musina Skoon plaas, says he is very happy to be afforded the opportunity to study medicine in Cuba. He explains how his dream of studying medicine in Cuba came true: “I was in a queue looking for a job at Messina Hospital, because my parents could not afford to take me to university. I then saw the South African Cuban Scholarship application forms and decided to try my luck. I filled them out and supplied all the relevant information as requested. I could not believe my ears when I got a call from the Department of Health that I had been selected. The rest is now history and I’m looking forward to this life-changing opportunity.” Reason Kgopana, who also stays in Musina Skoonplaas, says that he will definitely work very hard and "I will never disappoint the people of Seated: Reason Kgopana (left) and Future Maluleke, with the laptops presented to them by Musina. Sharing last wishes with your loved ones Everyone wants to leave a legacy for their loved ones. But what if that legacy ends up in the wrong hands? Dying without a will or with an invalid one may mean that your last wishes cannot be fulfilled. Some people don’t draw up a will because they believe that their estate (money, house, car, insurance policies and investments) is small enough for their families to manage. All they want is a simple will. “Drawing up a will does not have to be a complex or an expensive exercise. A trust company or your financial adviser can advise you on how to draft the most practical will that takes into account your personal circumstances and wishes,” says Sanlam Trust Legal Adviser Clive Hill. Your will is one of the most important documents in your life since it ensures your wishes are carried out after your death. If you die without a valid will in place, the law determines who inherits your estate. “That could have far-reaching consequences for your loved ones because the law, and not you, would determine who your heirs would be. A will stipulates how your estate should be distributed and to whom,” says Hill. But he also warns that having a will is only meaningful if that will is valid. It is important that your will should be a practical document that is easy to understand and easy to execute. You should review it regularly to reflect your changing life circumstances. For example, a marriage, divorce, the birth of a child, buying and selling large assets such as a house, the death of a family member or heir, and changes in legislation, all affect the content of your will. “You can’t be too careful when drafting your will. You should be taking advice from a specialist who works with your financial adviser to craft the best possible will – one that will achieve the best results for your loved ones,” says Hill. As the week of 15-19 September was South Africa’s National Wills Week, here are some tips on how to draw up a will: * Inform your family beforehand about your wishes regarding your funeral. A will is usually made public only after the funeral has been arranged. * When appointing heirs for your non-cash assets, it is advisable to split your estate and specify who inherits what. To transfer ownership of a house or car to two or more people can result in practical problems as well as family feuds. * If your children are minors, consider appointing someone to be their guardian when both biological parents have died. * Appoint your executor while drafting your will. The surviving spouse is often appointed as

the executor of the estate. However, by appointing a reliable company as executor, you get the advantage of specialised knowledge of wills and estates, thereby ensuring that your surviving spouse is not exploited by people who do not have your spouse’s best interests at heart.

Two people lost their lives when the bakkie they were travelling in collided with a minibus on the Vuwani/Elim road a fortnight ago. It is alleged that the accident happened when the Isuzu bakkie suddenly turned to drop off farm workers along the road near Ha-Mashaugondo-na-bada. The minibus was apparently coming from a westerly direction, en route to Gauteng with 12 passengers. Two people died on the scene of the crash. According to the police, the victims are a 46-year-old man and a 30 year-old woman from Ha-Mashau. The Levubu police have opened a case of culpable homicide and are investigating further. The police spokesperson, W/O Solly Mukhola, urged motorists to be cautious and watch out for other vehicles along the road. He said more accidents were likely to occur if motorists did not abide by the rules of the road. “Motorists should be very vigilant along the road and avoid unnecessary mistakes. They must watch out for other vehicles. Accidents are likely to happen, especially as we are approaching the festive season,” he added.

GCR 106FM - A new radio station is born By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The new radio station on the block, Giyani Community Radio, or GCR FM as they are popularly known, brings a breath of fresh air to the residents living in and around Giyani, who have waited so long for a community radio station. The station first went on air on 18 April. GCR FM has already become very popular with the listeners. The station’s manager, Mr Prenomen Chabani, indicated that, even during their first days on air, they didn’t have that many challenges from the community because they had done marketing and market evaluation very well through community-level campaigns. “Our challenge for now is the delay from SAARF (South African Audience Research Foundation) to supply listenership figures (rams) for our station,” he said. “Some businesses want to see the rams before they advertise with us.” GCR FM contributes to community develop-

ment by addressing community, national and global issues. It also addresses challenges facing local communities and informs listeners on available opportunities in a variety of fields.“The station ensures that individuals in these communities have access to knowledge that empowers them to live lives that are based on fundamental human values,” said Chabani. “GCR will showcase a unique community radio model of civil society leadership in terms of corporate governance and community broadcasting service.” They also make sure that they reach and interact with the com-

munities through outreach campaigns. “We are currently running what we call the GCR Care Campaign, where we visit needy families,” he explains. “We give them support by spending the whole day cleaning and eating with them and we give them food and clothes from our sponsors.” The radio station uses xiTsonga (50%), Tshivenda (20%), sePedi (20%) and English (10%). Listeners can catch up with GCR FM on 106.0 MHz or at their website, www.gcrfm.co.za. The station’s facebook page always provides an audio-streaming link where listeners can access the broadcast. Summit on moral regeneration

Diiteleni Day Care Centre’s management, guests and beneficiaries pose for a photograph after the event. By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho

“Love, nurture and protect the disabled kids” The Diiteleni Day Care Centre for disabled children also celebrated Casual Day this year. The event took place at the Tshilidzini Dual Purpose Centre’s hall. Mr Rabelani Netshitongwe, social worker attached to Famsa in Vhembe, said that people living with disabilies needed to be loved, nurtured and protected by their families. “The starting point to fight against discrimination against people living with disabilities is to prevent their being placed in institutions away from their families,” he said. He added that the establishment of day care centres such as Diiteleni needed to be promoted. According to Netshitongwe, the day care centres

provide stimulating activities for people living with disabilies and parents also have time to go to work or engage in other activities to provide for family needs. “The reunion of family members on a daily basis gives parents and siblings an opportunity to accept and treat people with disabilities with love and care,” he said. During the event, the children engaged in singing and traditional dances such as malende and xibelane. The manager at Diiteleni Day Care Centre, Ms Shumani Raphalalani, highlighted the centre’s challenges and said that, unless businesses and other willing members of the communities contributed to the centre, many

Computers stolen at Manaledzi Thugs broke into Manaledzi Secondary School, Tshiozwi, and stole two computers, a TV set, a projector and two DVD players last Saturday. The principal of the school, Mr Joseph Phungo, said the school belonged to the community and they must respect their property. Vandalism and theft at the school would hinder progress in the Phungo area. “We need our children to enjoy education in good classroom conditions,” Phungo added. He said that there was an indication that the thugs had gained entry through the burglar door, because it was damaged. “I believe they used an iron bar to break the burglar proofing. I can’t understand why they did this because it is the same community that suffers at the end of the day.” He appealed to Good Samaritans who could donate anything to come forward in order to replace the stolen articles. The spokesperson of the Tshilwavhusiku SAPS, Const Munyadziwa Marindi, confirmed the incident and mentioned that their investigations were continuing.

disabled children would continue to remain in their homes while they should have been taken care of at the centre. “We have at least 21 disabled children at the centre,” she said. “Some of the children no longer come to the centre as a result of transport challenges. Our biggest challenge is the lack of transport at the moment.” Raphalalani explained that most drivers who normally transported pupils to and from local schools were unwilling to transport the disabled children to and from the centre. Even when the parents or guardians of the disabled children were willing to pay monthly transport fares, all those drivers were reluctant to transport the children because the disabled children required extra effort. “Drivers need to help the children into and out of the vehicle when they get to the centre - something which most drivers are not prepared to do,” she said. “They say that it consumes their time to such an extent that they get to other schools’ dropping points very late.” The centre is also in dire need of training aids, so that they can aid the children to sit and walk. “Most children arrive at the centre unable to sit or walk, and we teach them from scratch,” she said. “We also do not have special toys suitable for children with special needs. We can’t just let them use any toys because they can be hazardous for the children.” At the moment, Diiteleni caters for children from five villages. They are Itsani, Tshisahulu, Duthuni, Shayandima and Muledane. The centre is also in dire need of at least 16 wheelchairs, which children will use at the centre. “We help all these children with matters of hygiene, such as teeth brushing, bathing and encouraging them to wash their clothes,” she said. “Some children reach the age of 16 without even being able to eat on their own, and it’s our responsibility to teach them to hold a piece of pap and eat. At the end of day, they are able to eat and even take a bath by themselves; this is the kind of the result of that makes us happy. It’s true that ours is not a small or easy job.”

Moral social cohesion was in the spotlight during a two-day summit on moral regenaration last week. It took place at the La Ndou Guest House and was organised by the Vhembe District Municipality and Vhembe Moral Regeneration Movement. About 40 delegates from different stakeholders such as The Victorious Community, Munna Ndi Nnyi?, and local municipalities attended the summit. Vhembe District Municipality’s Cllr Conny Mphaphuli outlined the movement’s concept note on the first day. She said that South Africa had crossed the historic bridge from inequality and conflict to a society grounded in common citizenship. “We reflect on the diverse journeys and cultures that have brought us to liberation and democracy, and commit ourselves to those ideals and ethical values that unite us in our diversity,” Mphaphuli stated. She indicated that the Vhembe Moral Regeneration Movement was committed to upholding the spirit of Ubuntu through a common commitment of affirming the dignity of

all people. “We dedicate ourselves as a nation to respect the worth of all individuals, irrespective of social origin, race, gender, age, status and class,” she said. It was further heard during the summit that most communities in South Africa are faced with challenges of moral decay. Some pressing challenges were put on the table, so that the stakeholders could come up with ways to address all those issues appropriately. “We are experiencing endless cases of ritual murders,” she said. The challenges mentioned included women and child abuse, usage and abuse of drugs, teenage pregnancies, and the HIV stigma. Munna Ndi Nnyi’s director Bardwell Mufunwaini said that movements for moral regeneration were important in reminding people to revisit their values and see if they were leading a healthy social lifestyle. “When there is a lack of morals among people, we witness a lot of family violence and killings, which should not have happened in the first place,” he said. “We need to encourage both young and old to go back and practice respect.”

Respected musician laid to rest at Makumeke Winning the lottery did not swell John Magezi Mahlawule’s ego and he has taught his community that one can win the lotto and still be humble. This was said by well-known ANC

leader Always Baloyi at Mahlawule’s funeral at the Makumeke cemetery fortnight ago. Baloyi, who is the ANC Xiwamuseve branch’s chairman, as well as a respected

musician, said Mahlawule was an active “ordinary member” and did not demand any position. “His humility is a lesson to us all that we can remain humble, despite one’s financial standing,” said Baloyi. Mahlawule (60) died on September 7 of natural causes. Hundreds of residents, including the local traditional leader, community structures, family members and friends, came to say their goodbyes to the loved man. Mahlawule’s daughter Constance said her father had been a remarkable man and he had been very close to his children. “To us as a family, he was a friend,” she said. Mahlawule is survived by his wife Anna, six children and The Mahlawule family, photographed at the tombstone of Mr John Mahlawule. six grandchildren.

More blood urgently needed Traditionally, the month of September is a difficult time at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) as a result of the preliminary exams and preparation towards the final quarter of the year. As a result, blood drives at schools and universities are generally not possible at this time of year. This, together with poor turnouts at companies and organisational blood drives, has placed immense pressure on the blood stock levels. “SANBS needs to maintain a blood stock level of five days at all times by collecting 3000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival. However, at the moment, we have only two days of blood stock available, and we are concerned that, should this continue, we are looking at a major crisis as we head towards the festive season,” said Vanessa Raju, SANBS’s communications manager, in a press release last week. Raju said that it is only with the help of the selfless blood donors that

they are able to remedy this situation. “We have implemented a cut-back approach where we are not able to meet the request by doctors. What this means is that, should a doctor request four units of blood, SANBS may only be able to offer two units, and this approach will continue until the blood stocks recover,” Raju said. The SANBS is encouraging all regular donors and those who have made a conscious decision to join this cause of saving lives not miss out on their next donation date. Members of the public who meet the minimum requirements to give the gift of life by becoming regular donors are urged to visit us as soon as they possibly can. The minimum blood donor requirements include being between the ages of 16 and 65 years, weighing 50kg or more, having good health and leading a sexually safe lifestyle. To find out where your nearest donor centre is, visit www.sanbs. org.za, call toll free 0800 11 9031 or SMS your NAME and POSTAL CODE of the area you live in to 31454.

The quest for morality

Cleaning the outside ... We live in an age where people focus on ‘image’ and what is called ‘branding’ in business terms. If you want to go for an interview, you will be told how important it is to make an impression at first sight. Having the right look and image is everything; hence, some people even forget to prepare for the content of their interviews, hoping that their good looks will earn them jobs. In our reflection last week, we noted whilst interpreting Luke 11:37-41 that the Pharisees were not bothered about the inside but just the outside. They were not worried about one’s relationship with God; their interest was on the fulfilment of the law. Observance of the law was more important to them than having a healthy relationship with God, and they were more interested in impressing men than God. They accused Christ in so many instances of not observing the Law of Moses. As we reflect on Luke 11:37-41, it is clear that Jesus and his disciples were accused of not cleaning their hands before eating. The pharisees’ concern was not about the health value of the food that the disciples were eating, but their eating without washing their hands. What mattered to them was not whether Jesus and his disciples were eating junk, but the observance of the law. Because of societal pressure, we have come to believe that outward beauty is the only thing that is important. We still behave in more or less the same way as the Pharisees. We even go to an extent that our way

of life resembles that of the world. Some model themselves after TV superstars and wear clothes like they do, eat like them, talk like them and want to replicate them in every way. Many get to be consumed by the spirit of materialism. Our being and actions are there to make an impression. Our association is even one determined by the looks and material possessions that we have. Churches suffer division, where people who are wealthy or well off always want to associate with others who are well off. Those who are educated also want to associate themselves with the educated. We are prone to embrace the spirit of competition, which ultimately brews division and even hatred among God’s people. Cleaning the outside of the cup can be very dangerous if the outside is not informed and shaped by the outside. That is why there is a saying, “looks can be very deceiving”. When we want to wash the outside at the expense of the inside, we end up developing pride – even spiritual pride - and despising others in the process. We trample on one of the profound principles of faith: 3 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4). When we avoid the dangers of cleaning the cup on the outside, we also avoid strife in our marriages. Focus on the inside and save your marriage. - Prof Derrick Mashau, (mashatd@ unisa.ac.za)

NATION UNITED THROUGH SPORT

Thousands of residents from all over Vhembe recently heeded Vhavenda King Toni Mphephu’s call and joined a fun walk from MTG Funerals at Lufule 2 to the Royal Gardens in Nandoni some 15 km away. Young and old braved the scorching heat and completed the 15 km walk to the Nandoni Dam. The fun walk and the bare-knuckle fist fighting formed part of the Heritage festivities organized by the Vhavenda King, Toni Mphephu. Leading by example, King Toni Mphephu and Bapedi king Victor Thulare were joined by senior traditional leaders in Venda, Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, Thovhele Kennedy Tshivhase, MEC for Sport Arts and Culture in Limpopo, Nandi Ndalane, the deputy minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Obed Bapela, the chairman of the National Lottery Board, Prof Alfred Nevhutanda, Vhembe executive mayor, Tshitereke Matibe and traditional leaders. They walked till the finishing line at the resort. At the Royal Gardens, the king and his entourage sat down and watched splendid displays of bare knuckle fist fighting skills by the best traditional fighters from around Venda and the surrounding areas. The theme for the festivities was simply unity through

sport. For the first time, Thovhele Kennedy Tshivhase, King Toni Mphephu and Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli who were involved in a bitter struggle for the Vhavenda kingship throne were seen together, holding hands and enjoying the festivities together. After all the festivities, Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli ascended the podium and announced that he was about to do something unusual. He called King Toni Mphephu, Thovhele Kennedy Tshivhase and the Vhembe executive mayor to the front. “We as the family of Masingo hereby declare in front of the people that we would from now on work together as a collective, we from the traditional leadership as one and the municipality for development in our area,” he said to much applause of their subjects. During the musangwe, King Toni Mphephu stood up and called for a challenge whereby Thovhele Tshivhase stood up for the challenge but the “fight” could not continue as “referee” deputy minister Obed Bapela stopped it. Addressing his subjects and guests, King Toni said that the activities are not just aimed at the health and entertainment but also to unify the Vhavenda nation. Mphephu said that the day was meant to remind his subjects not to forget their culture and heritage.

Makhado mayor David Mutavhatsindi also finished the 15 km walk.

“We felt we should at least meet with our people and we thought people’s health is of utmost importance and thus the fun walk. As leaders we have to lead from the front and to practice what we always preach, that we need to stay healthy, even ourselves we have to be healthy in order to be able to lead our healthy subjects,” he said. Mphephu added that the bare knuckle fist fighting (musangwe) has been part of the Vhavenda heritage which taught the young respect and also showed the bravery of the Vhavenda people. “This is just but a start, we have decided that this be an annual event where we will meet and be with our people celebrating our heritage,” he said. Those who took part in the fun walk and participated in musangwe were given medals and trophies. The festivities culminated in a music festival, which featured some of the top groups and performers like Kanda Bongoman, Ringo Madlingozi, Oliver Mutukudzi, Mafikizolo and Colbert Mukwevho. One of the organizers, Shandu Nesengani of the Royal Gardens at Nandoni said he was happy and they were humbled to work with the king in uniting the Vhavenda nation.

Black Leopards and Baroka in Lim derby It remains to be seen whether Black Leopards will make amends and register their first victory of the season when they host Baroka FC in their NFD League match at the Thohoyandou Stadium tomorrow afternoon. Leopards are still to win a league match this season after playing four matches. They lost two and drew the other two. On the other hand, Baroka are still to lose a league match this season. They have six points in hand after winning one of the four matches they had played, while three ended in draws. Should they fail to collect the

full points tomorrow, Leopards will lose a huge number of fans, considering the fact that the fans left the stadium with sore hearts in their recent two league matches at home. After watching three of the previous four matches from the bench, Mongezi Bobe is likely to be in the Leopards’ starting 11 tomorrow. Dunga Munganga and Marks Munyai will ensure that the Leopards’ danger area is always clean. Lamontville Golden Arrows will host Santos at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban. Arrows are still fresh from a 1-0 victory over African Warriors. Garankuwa United will fly to Cape Town By Phathutshedzo Luvhengo where they will lock horns with

FC Cape Town at the NNK Rugby Stadium. Thanda Royal Zulu will play in front of their home crowd. They will host Royal Eagles at the Umhlathuze Stadium in Richards Bay. It will be a second away match for Royal Eagles in succession, after playing against Santos in Cape Town last weekend. African Warriors will host Jomo Cosmos at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in Phuthaditshaba. Sunday will see Highlandspark rub shoulders with Vasco da Gama at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa. Milano United will play against Witbank Spurs at the Philipi Stadium in Cape Town this evening, while Cape Town All Stars and Maluti FET College will test each other’s strength at the Athlone Stadium.

Another defeat for ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS Contact: Jannie - 079 300 6876 24/7 Lidoda Duvha Levubu / Louis Trichardt / Thohoyandou Black Leopards are fast becoming the NFD league’s milk cow. They suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Witbank Spurs at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank on Sunday. Lidoda Duvha dictated terms in the first 20 minutes. The home side scored in the 34th minute. Morgan Shivambu, Leopards’ midfielder, scored an own goal while trying to clear the ball from the goal line. Spurs increased the tally via Xoli Themba two minutes before the break. In the other match that was also played on Sunday, Vasco da Gama played to a 1-1 draw with Cape Town All Stars at the Parow Park Stadium in Cape Town. Maluti FET College could not absorb the pressure from Thanda Royal Zulu, who crushed them 2-0 at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in the Free State. Baroka FC failed to collect full points, despite the fact that they were playing in front of their home crowd. They shared the spoils with Highlandspark FC, following a 1-1 draw at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Another match which also ended in a 1-1 draw was between Jomo Cosmos and FC Cape Town at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa. Lamontville Golden Arrows beat African Warriors 1-0 at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban. Santos scored four goals and conceded two against Royal Eagles at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Friday evening. The rookies, Garankuwa United, gave away league points to Milano United. They were narrowly beaten 0-1 at the Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria.

minute. The goal was a wake-up call to the players of Eagles, who came back strongly. They were prevented from scoring by excellent work from keeper Hector Malange.

The boys from Maebane were lucky not to concede half a dozen of goals during the second half, as they were out of touch in all departments.

Michael Matshipa of Eagles is ready to kick the ball, while Rapelani Leaka is waiting for any possible mistake.

Maebane Young Eagles donated three points to Madombidzha Arsenal, when they lost 0-1in an MMK Insurance Brokers match at Madombidzha on Sunday. Eagles was good at the far back, but heir midfielders hesitated for too long and did not realease the ball on time to the goal poachers. This sloppy performance put the defence under tremendous pressure. Arsenal initiated some promising moves from the centre of the pitch but were denied a number of scoring opportunities by the rock-solid defence of their opponents. Players who went to the referee’s book for different infringement are Sipho Mudalana and Ngudo Machaba of Arsenal and Tshilidzi Sioga of Eagles. The boys from Madombidzha introduced Matodzi Mutagwa and Mbengeni Rambuwani for Rapelani Leaka and Edwin Makhuvha respectively in the 70th minute. Eagles replaced Ivan Ramatjie with Talifhani Mbedzi. The replacement of Arsenal changed the complexion of the match as they were all over the Eagles. Matodzi Mutangwa scored his team's only goal in the 76th

Benny's Care booked a place in the final of the Heritage Tournament when they beat Gogobole Bucs 2-1 at Gogobole on Saturday. The Gogobole outfit approached the match like a house on fire, with their midfielders distributing some telling passes to their strikers. They threatened to score 10 minutes into the match when Try Sebola forced his way through the defence of Benny’s before passing to Lucky

Funyufunyu. His attempt missed the target by inches. The match was 24 minutes old when Domenic Mafuleni made his presence felt. He unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box and the keeper of Benny’s, Gladwin Gulula, watched in disbelief as the ball hit the net to give Bucs a 1-0 lead at half time. The second half saw Benny’s pressing hard in search of more goals. Realising that their

chances were slim, Bucs abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the far back. Bucs lost shape in the midfield and Benny’s capitalised to score in the 66th minute. KK beat Tshakhuma in final of Amos Charity - Continues from p24 He forced his way through the defence of KK and shot wide from close range. Desmond Netshiungani, the Tshakhuma centre forward, was the busiest player in the game. He was playing as a full striker, and at the same time assisted the midfielders. Tshakhuma na Ndilani, or Makhurabada as they are affectionately called, threatened to score again in the 24th minute. Netshiungani lost possession just before he unleashed from inside the box. KK’s performance improved with time with their defenders, Tshifhiwa Ndou and Unarine Mukhavhuli, refusing to allow any intruder within their vicinity. They opened their account in the 58th minute, when Percy Mabasa scored after a rebound. Mashudu Muliwa and Tshifhiwa

Mmbooi, both of Makhurabada, found themselves on the wrong side of the law in the 70th and 74th minute respectively. They were both warned for dangerous play. KK increased the margin through Londani Davhula in the 76th minute, but the Tshakhuma lads pulled one back via Oscar Mulangaphuma late in the game. * Maweja Takers fought hard for their 5-4 victory on penalties over Tshakhuma RO United in their losers’ final that was played before the final. The game was equally contested from the onset to the end, with both sides creating and squandering obvious scoring chances. KK were presented with a floating trophy, gold medals and a cash prize of R8 000 during the ceremony held shortly after the final. Tshakhuma na Ndilani went home with R5 000 and silver medals. Maweja Takers received R2 500 and

bronze medals and Tshakhuma RO United a consolation prize of R1 000. The champions in the U/13 category, Shooting Stars, were given gold medals and cash of R2 500. Shooting Stars beat Yebo Yes 2-1 in the final. Yebo Yes received R1 500 and silver medals. Young Tigers, who obtained the third position, received a cash prize of R1 000. Oscar Neluvhalani of Shooting Stars, with six goals, won the top goal scorer and the player of the tournament awards. Ndamulelo Mukwevho, striker of Tshakhuma na Ndilani, was the senior player of the tournament. Mbavhalelo Thathaisa of Maweja Takers was the best goalkeeper. The coach of FC KK, Mr Maitakhole Neluvhalani, received the best coach award. Special awards were presented to Mr Mashudu Ndou of Tshakhuma na Nadilani and Mr Ndanduleni Nemutudi of FC KK.

Wellness Day at Correctional Services Officials from the Thohoyandou Correctional Centre and Makhado Correctional Centre participated in different sporting codes as part of integrated employee health and wellness day. The event was held last at the sports grounds of Louis Trichardt High School last Thursday. The Thohoyandou Management Area’s spokesperson, Mr Tshifhiwa Magadani, said that the day of activities on wellness came after a call from acting national commissioner Mr Zach Modise, who

encouraged officials to participate and be involved in sports to be active and productive at their work as well to live a healthy lifestyle. “Although our main mandate as a department is to rehabilitate offenders, it is crucial to encourage our officials to participate in these types of activities because a healthy mind performs better,” said Magadani. The department of correctional services was joined by different stakeholders, including AgriAids, Gym4you and Auram. The Department of Health assisted and checked officials’ blood pressure and sugar levels. Dieticians also assessed the wellness of officials and recommended diet.
