Show a no show

but a carnival By Andries van Zyl

No annual “Makhado Show” will take place this year, but a “Makhado Carnival Show”, which has nothing to do with the former, will be held. Confused? Then join the club! Traditionally, the Makhado Municipality hosts its annual show during the last week of July. Last week, as with previous years, the newspaper highlighted the fact that the show, entitled the Makhado Carnival Show, will once again take place. When the Makhado Municipally therefore announced earlier this week that they would not be hosting the annual show, this came as a bit of a surprise. In an official notice to the media on Tuesday, the municipality stated that they had decided not to host a show this year because of safety issues brought about by the relocation of several of the town’s sports and clubs to their new facilities next to the show grounds. Because of all the construction work taking place, the municipality said that they had thus decided to postpone the show until next year. The most interesting part of the media notice is, however, the bit at the end, which states: “Makhado Municipality also wants to distance itself from a person who is using its name ‘Makhado Annual Show’ to mobilize the community to the show. The municipality has no relationship with the person who claims that he or she will be hosting [the] Makhado Annual show during July 2018 and therefore we will not take responsibility to account for any act or omission occasioned by this fake annual show pretending to be held by the municipality. We apologise to the entire Makhado community for the

inconveniences caused, although [it] is for better service delivery as the Mall seeks to create permanent employment for the people of Makhado.” This part of the municipality’s notice definitely set the proverbial cat among the pigeons as they also circulated the notice on social media. The question on everyone’s lips is therefore whether any kind of show will take place this year or not. The short answer is yes, there will be a show, but not in the usual format; instead, a carnival will be held. This carnival will not be run by the municipality but by a private company, called African Cornerstone Network, in partnership with Lufunde Communications. “I’ve never mentioned Makhado Annual Show in my posters, because mine is the Makhado Carnival Show 2018,” said Mr Ngereza Netshifhefhe of African Cornerstone Network during an interview on Tuesday. Netshifhefhe said that they never wanted to create the idea that the two were the same thing. “Our idea was only to penetrate the economic opportunities since Makhado Municipality is not hosting the show,” he said. Netshifhefhe, who is no stranger to hosting the annual show for the Makhado Municipality as he had done so several times in the past, was very upset with the municipality for creating a cloud of suspicion surrounding his carnival and referring to it as a “fake annual show” in their notice. “The fact is, they never put the show out on tender this year, so we saw the opportunity … Firstly, I wrote a proposal for the whole show and that we would like to host it on 3 June. They [municipality] never replied to us. (Contd on P2)

Education remains the key to conservation By Jo Robinson

Isabel José with her sister Lorinda de Gois in front of the property in question. “No valuer came to see my house,” says Isabel.

Little reprieve for local homeowners By Jo Robinson

Isabel and Tony José were completely unaware that the municipal value of their property in the Loerie Park complex in Mimosa Street, Louis Trichardt, had been tripled, until they read an article in the Zoutpansberger and requested their latest rates account. “Nobody has come around or contacted us to revalue the property, even though the article stated that the valuers said that they had visited every property that they valued,” said Isabel. “We hadn’t been receiving our bills, so I went to the municipality for a printout and discovered that we were much more than R10 000 in arrears because the property’s value has been adjusted so much upwards that we weren’t paying enough monthly to cover it. From a value of a little more than R700 000 five years ago to R2 100 000 now. Unbelievable.” In June this year, the valuers for the 2018 until 2023 municipal valuation roll, Geospatial Valuation Technologies, based in Port Elizabeth, stated that physically visiting every property that they valued was not required and that other methods might be used in some cases. Mr Clyde Lawrence of Geospacial later informed the Zoutpansberger on 6 July that this matter is now under judicial

consideration and is therefore prohibited from public discussion elsewhere. He suggested that residents with objections lodge appeals. “As you can see,” continued Isabel, “the houses in this complex are very similar, and yet neighbours have had their property here valued at R1050 000, which is exactly half of my latest valuation. What I’d like to know is how they come by these figures without ever looking at the houses. What can we do now?” According to local attorney and member of the South African Institute of Valuers Dr Suwil Rudolph, very little can be done now, even though the Josés were unaware of the closing date to appeal the valuation. “Unfortunately,” he said, “at this point the current valuation stands and the current rates are payable. Even if they had objected within the timeframe given, the law says that the onus is on you to prove the market value of your property. In the meantime, they may report the valuer for unprofessional conduct and fill in the relevant forms to try and appeal to get the roll overturned.” Rudolph stresses that homeowners must get their properties professionally valued and advises them to follow standard procedures of objection rather than to guess at the values of their homes by comparing them to the values given to other similar properties in your vicinity.

The Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror, two proudly independent newspapers in the Limpopo Province, are looking for talented and dedicated marketers to join their sales team. The newspapers have been part of the communities since 1985 and 1990, respectively, and are market leaders with the top ABC-figures in the province. They provide an ideal platform for businesses, municipalities and any other organisations, aiming to reach the region’s decision-makers. The company needs two sales representatives to assist clients with their advertising campaigns

Calling for

Sales Representatives Requirements: Field Experience: A minimum of 2-3 years field experience in marketing and sales will be to your advantage. Educational Qualification: A sales diploma or other tertiary qualification will be an advantage, but is not a pre-requisite. A minimum of a matric certificate, preferably with university exemption, is necessary. A valid drivers’ licence is also necessary. Age: There is no age restriction, but this is not a senior post and younger candidates may fit in better in the team. Area of work: The candidate must be based in Louis Trichardt, but travelling to areas such as Thohoyandou and Musina will be necessary. Interested candidates must collect an application form from our office and hand these back before 27 July 2018. (No e-mailed application forms or CVs will be considered.) Requests for an application form can be sent to admin@zoutnet.co.za, but the completed application forms must be physically handed in.

Application forms can be handed in at 16B Joubert Street, Louis Trichardt

all I could about the environment, insects, trees, and animals. I attended some beginner’s courses about birds and then a full training course in Wakkerstroom. I still regularly attend refresher courses every year to keep up to date.” Samson encourages everyone to learn about the importance of the conservation of all wildlife, although his main work and focus are on birds and birding. “All illegal wildlife trading has a bad impact and can lead to extinction in the wild of some species,” said Samson. “It is important to focus on bird conservation because they can become just as extinct as other bigger animals do … I am not aware of any particular extinctions of bird species in this area, but in our province, we should be aware of one critically endangered bird. The Taita Falcon is found around Abel Erasmus pass, and there are only 50 individual birds left of that entire species,” said Samson. Samson welcomes any birding- or conservation-related calls, or if someone needs help with an injured or lost bird. “You can call me on 083 662 9960 for advice or information,” he said. “Our closest rehabilitation centre is in Tzaneen, but in most cases, there is no need to intervene as usually birds hopping and flitting on the ground are fledglings that are being cared for and fed by their parents,” said Samson. Samson can also be contacted via email on samson@birdingsoutpansberg-venda.co.za or his website at www.birdingsoutpansberg-venda.co.za.

“We cannot emphasise enough the importance of educating our children about their heritage of wildlife, and how important the conservation and protection of wild habitats are for the future.” These are the words of a local guide for birders and an avid conservationist, Samson Mulaudzi Khavhagali. He is a very well-known and popular personality in the Limpopo birding community. Hailing from Tshivhazwaulu-Hamangilasi, Vuwani, Samson is involved in, and co-creator, of the Mottled Spinetails conservation and education project in Sagole. He runs the Birds in Trees Project throughout the Soutpansberg area, for which he visits schools with the aim of educating children about conservation of the environment, habitats, and animals. He also conducts research projects for the Greater Limpopo Birding routes. This specialist nature guide also runs Birding Soutpansberg and Venda Eco-tours. “An eco-tour is about visiting natural areas like forests, natural reserves and national parks and involves observing wildlife, including birds, animals, and insects. These tours educate both tourists and local people,” said Samson. Samson won an Owl Award in 2012 from Birdlife Africa for his contribution to avian conservation, and for his efforts to educate students about bird conservation. “I am always visiting local schools and teaching the children about wildlife, especially birds,” he said. “The most important message I want to impart is the importance of the conservation of birds rather than the traditional killing of them for meat. I do this through educational projects that I started up with other guides, such as the Birds in Trees project, which encourages the planting of trees at schools, together with conservation education,” Samson added. Together with Birdlife South Africa, Samson runs the Mottled Spinetail project. This came into being after a trip to Sagole showed him that children were knocking down Spinetail nests for eggs and chicks, and he realised that he would have to do something about it. “So, they have to be taught how important these birds are,” said Samson. Samson is tireless in educating the children of Limpopo to get them to understand the value of birds, and to show them the career possibilities in their study and conservation. “My interest in the conservation of birds started when I was young. When we weren’t in school, we spent our spare time out in the bushes herding goats and cattle. We also used to look for birds to eat then,” says Mulaudzi. “I changed from wanting to eat birds to wanting to conserve them when I started learning about them. I was given an old pair of binoculars and a field guide while I was working at a lodge in the Soutpansberg. Local bird expert and eco-tour guide Samson I taught myself to identify bird species and studied Mulaudzi.

“We never advertised it as the show” (Contd from P1) “Then, on 19 June, we wrote another letter to the municipal manager to say this is our intention and we are going to do this show. It was just a formal notice to him to be aware of our intention to host a carnival. Also, they didn’t reply, so on 3 July we went to book the venue [at the municipality] and paid it up, after making a formal notification to the entire municipality to say this is our intention,” said Netshifhefhe. It is this “turnaround” by the municipality in creating the idea that they had no knowledge of the planned show or carnival, whatever residents would like to call it, that has Netshifhefhe fuming. “We do not believe the show, or any event that is family orientated, must take place under the blessing of the municipality,” said Netshifhefhe, adamant that his event is going ahead. Netshifhefhe said the carnival would be of benefit to all, not

only to them. “There are artists who will also come to showcase their crafts. There are people who will be selling their products and people will be employed on a temporary basis. An event like this contributes towards tourism in town. At the end of the day, everybody wins. It is my opinion that the municipality should rather encourage people like us to come up with more events like this, so that they can concentrate on service delivery. We are surprised that, instead of coming on board with us, the municipality now goes out to the public with this message and creates mayhem,” said Netshifhefhe. As for the safety of show patrons, Netshifhefhe assured the public that their safety and security would be a high priority. He said that he had met with the Makhado SAPS on Tuesday morning and that everything was in place to ensure a safe show. “We have ironed out all the issues of safety. The police are going to be there. All certificates are

in place and the show is going to happen,” said Netshifhefhe. The Makhado Carnival Show started on 26 July and will end on 28 July. The merry-go-round was already on site on Tuesday. The normal stalls, totalling more than 50, will be there, including among others, stalls with food, beverages, toys, crafts, vehicles, corporate and agriculture. The entrainment programme also includes helicopter rides, a music festival and beer garden. “…we want to make sure that we create a lifetime memory for all our patrons who will be joining us for the show,” said Netshifhefhe. As the annual “show weekend” is not appreciated by all, especially those having to endure loud music throughout the night until the next morning, how successful the carnival will be remains to be seen. “Given more support, we believe that we could have done better,” said Netshifhefhe. As for the music festival, Netshifhefhe said that all events would run concurrently throughout.

Five “jailbirds” collect almost R40 000 for SPCA Charity

The SPCA’s five “jailbirds” managed to collect almost R40 000 for the local animal care givers on Saturday. A rather miserable-looking lot arrived at Mike’s Kitchen in Louis Trichardt early on Saturday morning to take part in the annual Jail & Bail project. The group included a teacher, a businesswoman, a pig farmer, a politician and a journalist (in order of importance). They were told to brave the cold weather and wait for the inspector. A very friendly Inspector Lawrence Khodobo arrived promptly at 09:30 and escorted the group (some armed with coolboxes) to the SPCA’s van. After a short trip to the local kennels, the “convicts” were taken to their holding cells. They were to stay there until they had each collected at least R5 000. It quickly became clear that the politician, Brian du Plooy, knows how to get himself out of any situation. He arrived well prepared with a vast variety of “medicines” in his coolbox to fend off the cold weather - enough even to offer “incentives” to friends to donate money. How many promises he made and how many babies he kissed cannot be determined, but he managed to collect R9 351. The jailbird who ended second in the “race” to collect money, was the local farmer, André Coetzee. He came prepared with his own “sleeping tub”, expecting to spend some time waiting for the (money) crop to grow, but this was not necessary. Word has it that André, or “Varkie” as he is more commonly known, spent time canvassing at the Reformed Church’s function the previous night. He apparently made off with quite a few donations that could have been spent on buying food from the congregation. When the money was counted on Saturday, his tally stood at R7 855. Third place went to the popular deputy

headmaster at Laerskool Louis Trichardt, Irene Adendorff. In a teacher-like manner she shifted the burden to the children and they very conscientiously collected money on her behalf. She proved to be one of the dogs’ favourites on Saturday morning, because the children who came to visit her in “jail” volunteered to entertain the animals. The dogs were walked, the cats were stroked and all-around it was an enjoyable day for young and old. Irene collected R7 451. The race for fourth and fifth spot was quite tough. The newspaper man, Anton van Zyl, made an emotional plea to all 14 of his Facebook friends to support the cause. When that did not work, he The five “jailbirds” photographed before they were taken to their holding kennels. From left asked them to contact their friends and pretend are Anton van Zyl, André Coetzee, Candice Terink, Brian du Plooy and Irene Adendorff. Photo that they needed the money. After a lot of half- supplied. truths, subtle blackmailing and false promises, he collected R6 950. Candice Terink arrived as a late replacement and was only informed of her fate the day before. She started with a “clean slate” with very little time allowed for canvassing support. As the morning progressed she smiled, waved and even put up a “puppy face” to get more people to put money into her bin. Before the morning was gone, she had collected R6 600. It is scary to think how much she could have collected if they had given her a few days’ prior warning. The local SPCA’s organising committee was ecstatic about the success of the day and also the funds that were collected. “The funds we generated on Saturday will be put to use to secure our grounds and also go towards upgrading our puppy kennel to prevent the spread of diseases,” said Yolanda Cronjé, chairperson of the local SPCA committee. André “Varkie” Coetzee arrived well prepared with his own sleeping tub. Photo supplied.

Brian du Plooy clearly knows how to make friends and influence people. He collected R9 351 for the SPCA on Saturday. Photo supplied.

John will be sadly missed In Memoriam

benefited from the sale of the stands. Because no compensation was paid, he and his family had to leave for South Africa to seek better fortunes and support from the State,” reads the WhatsApp entry. John will be sadly missed by so many as he left an indelible mark in Masvingo and beyond that will never be forgotten. “Our most sincere condolences to Yvonne and the family who had been so patiently and lovingly caring for John throughout his long illness. May the good Lord be with them all during this difficult time,” was the message from the Moths. A funeral service for John will be held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Grobler Street, Louis Trichardt, on Friday, 27 July, at 10:30 for 11:00. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Yvonne, their children Steve and family, Michelle, Clint and family, Shana and family, sister Mary and family and a multitude of other family and friends.

The Moths Turbi Hills Shellhole in Louis Trichardt said a sad farewell to one of its members, Mr John Tilma, who passed away at his home on 20 July at the age of 71. “John bravely fought cancer for quite a while now, but in the end it was that which overcame him,” reads the message of John’s passing on the Moths’ WhatsApp group. John was born on 11 June 1947 in Pretoria and was adopted by Sjoerd en “Peggy” Tilma when he was six months old and taken to Fort Victoria in the then Rhodesia. In later years, John established himself as one of the Masvingo Province’s most outstanding farmers and dedicated a huge amount of his time to assist the community regarding various aspects. He also spent a couple of years serving the Masvingo Farmers’ Association, which was greatly appreciated by all, especially at the very difficult time of equipment theft and farm invasions. “He was always a fighter and never gave up,” remember his friends. John was also an active member of the Moths in Masvingo and later in South Africa where members of the armed forces were cared for in remembrance of those who had made the supreme sacrifice for their countries. John and wife Yvonne successfully ran Fomax Dairy on Victoria Ranch outside Masvingo, They also ran a mixed farm, catering for a lot of the fresh produce demanded on the Masvingo market. John realised his property was in a strategic spot, so he was busy with a subdivision of residential stands to augment his pension. Sadly, the property and all of his equipment were expropriated, and he was left with virtually nothing. “Somebody else has now The late Mr John Tilma (71). Photo supplied.

Venetia elephants find a new home in Mozambique Conservation

The De Beers Group has begun to transport 200 elephants across 1 500km from its Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve (VLNR) near Musina in South Africa to Mozambique. “The operation, one of the largest elephant translocations ever recorded in South Africa, is part of a major conservation initiative to protect the welfare of wildlife in South Africa and help restore Mozambique’s elephant population,” reads a press release by the mining company, issued on Monday. According to De Beers, for the first phase of the project, approximately 60 elephants will be transported in July and August from the VLNR to Zinave National Park in central Mozambique. The remaining elephants will be moved to conservation areas that hold sufficient elephant-carrying capacity within Mozambique from next year. “De Beers Group is partnering with Peace Parks Foundation, a leading not-for-profit organisation focused on the preservation of large, functional cross-border ecosystems to carry out the initiative. Through formal agreements with Mozambique’s National Administration for Conservation Areas, Peace Parks Foundation co-manages Zinave National Park, which is an integral component of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area,” says De Beers. The Peace Parks Foundation will assist the De Beers Group with the translocation, ensuring the elephants’ social groups are not disturbed and that they flourish in their new habitat through ongoing monitoring of their wellbeing and enhanced protection efforts. “There is no greater symbol of Africa than the majestic elephant. For us to be able to help secure their future in Mozambique, while also ensuring that other species at our Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve can flourish, is something every employee

of De Beers Group is proud of. This translocation is born of a deep sense of responsibility and is part of our wider commitment to continue to invest in new and innovative ways to protect the natural world,” said the CEO of the De Beers Group, Mr Bruce Cleaver. Covering 32 000 hectares and established in the early 1990s, the VLNR can accommodate around 60 elephants without adverse impact on the surrounding ecosystem. “Currently, however, there are more than 270 elephants on the reserve, as a result of natural population growth, with their presence risking extensive damage to an ecosystem that must sustain a diverse wildlife population,” said De Beers. By contrast, they added, wildlife populations in the Zinave National Park, which was founded in the 1960s, have been critically depleted following Mozambique’s 15-year civil war. The park offers significant carrying capacity for large numbers of elephants across its 408,000 hectares, and is currently home to only around 60 of them. “Ecosystems require a range of fauna and flora to stay balanced. If you remove one species, such as elephant, it has a ripple effect on the whole system. The reintroduction of elephants to Mozambique will bring us one step closer to achieving our dream of restoring the landscape and establishing uninterrupted connectivity with seamless migration of wildlife across the parks within the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area,” said Mr Werner Myburgh, CEO of the Peace Parks Foundation. As part of its investment in the elephant translocation initiative, De Beers Group is also providing Peace Parks Foundation with US$500 000 over five years towards anti-poaching support measures, which will include the hiring and training of new park rangers, and the opening of new access roads to increase patrol coverage.

(Joh.1:4) - 079 516 8303

Our traffic department needs to take responsibility and stop these people garding a stop sign? How many of these motorist who just do a driveby instead of doing a dead stop are being fined? If a motorist is being stopped, what happens to the driver, is a fine only issued or are there more drastic steps taken? On a daily basis I see motorist disregarding the stop signs in town. There will be far less slaughtering on our roads if the traffic department starts to act against these

motorist who are disobeying the law of the road. Then there are also a lot of stop signs missing or removed in town, the road markings on the road are no longer visible or has been retarred and never re-painted. This is very concerning, and I feel that the traffic department needs to step up and address these issues to ensure the safety of all road users in town. I would also like to mention that

after my employee’s accident, I had to file an accident report at the police station. My case number was 58/7. Does this mean that my case is accident number 58 for the month of July in town?

New plan aims to stop town’s water shortages

Work has begun on the new reservoir to be built in Kort Street, Louis Trichardt, with the demolishing of the old one. “The new reservoir here will hold one megalitre of water and pump from here to the Berg Street reservoir. We will be refurbishing the current building here for the new pumphouse and treatment plant,” said Mr Phatu Mudayu of Bics Engineering, the contractors for the project. Mr David Mukosi of the Vhembe Water Service Authority explained that all of the town’s 16 current Mr Brian du Plooy, DA ward councillor for Louis Trichardt, on the left and Mr David Mukosi, municipal boreholes had been targeted by thugs and satellite office manager for Water Services for Louis Trichardt (Vhembe Water Service Authority) thieves and destroyed. “Vandalism is a very serious hold up the plans for the new reservoir system. Construction work started last week. issue around town. Even all the cables were stolen.

Mayor starts to fix potholes herself By Jo Robinson

The mayor of Makhado Municipality, Cllr Shonisani Sinyosi, and her team were out and about in town fixing potholes all over on Friday, 20 July, and she has vowed that she will be doing the same every Friday until all the holes are repaired. Together with her team, she inspected roads from Hlanganani Street to Songwozi and Grobler Street. In some places where the problem was more like missing pieces of road than potholes, she requested that some whole sections receive completely new surfaces within four weeks. Every Friday she will be visiting the entire area, including all townships and the R293, to focus on getting the town’s and environing roads pothole free.

Mayor Shonisani Sinyosi is on a mission to get the roads fixed in Louis Trichardt, and has vowed to be out and about every Friday with her team, fixing potholes. This pictired of her and her team was taken last Friday, 20 July.

We have to make sure that this new water system is properly managed and policed as far as security is concerned, or it will become a white elephant,” said Mukosi. He continued to say that the source of water for the new reservoir would be pumped from six of the 16 boreholes, which are to be completely refurbished after having been rendered completely useless with all moveable pieces stolen, including all the transformers. As far as future security for the new buildings and equipment is concerned, Mudayu said that they had already demolished the previous reservoir and the palisade fencing around it. “We’re going to build concrete walls around the reservoir and around all of the six pumping stations. There will be electric fencing on top of these walls as a further deterrent. We will also be building guard houses inside the walls at each station, and there will be a security guard for every one of them,” said Mudayu. Mukosi said that, at the moment, the Berg Street reservoir was getting water from the Albasini Dam, but that that would not be necessary in the future. “With the new system, each borehole will have its own pump and chlorine treatment works. From the new reservoir, water will be pumped to Berg Street and from there to the Hospital Street reservoir and the Extension 7 reservoir,” said Mukosi. Mr Brian du Plooy, DA ward councillor for Louis Trichardt, said that, once completed, this reservoir would supply all the water required for the entire western side of the town, including Tshikota. He said that the funding for this contract by Vhembe was slightly in excess of R21 million, including contingencies, and that the time set out to completion was 52 weeks from now. “Then we can begin on the eastern side of town,” he said. “The aim is to get it all this sorted out. When this western phase is complete, we should have water 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Du Plooy. Mukosi agreed that with this new reservoir up and running, water stoppages should come to an end.

Limpopo beat Vikings in local 20-over league final Cricket News

The team from Limpopo Dairy yet again showed their strength in local cricket when they beat Vikings by 86 runs on Sunday in the final of the Louis Trichardt Cricket Club’s 20-over league. Limpopo batted first and the two opening batsmen quickly put up a 50 partnership. Leon Olwage (23 off 22 balls) was the first to go when he got caught off the bowling of Leon Furstenburg. Chrisjan Hendriks then continued to demolish the bowling attack, scoring 74 off only 49 balls. Viking’s Pieter Kloppers then spearheaded a bit of a fight back, taking three wickets, but the runs kept flowing. Wouter Smit (40 not out from 26 balls) and TE Smit (20 from 16 balls) helped take the score to 177/5 after 20 overs.

The best bowler for Vikings was Pieter Kloppers (3/20 in 4 overs). Kobus Barkhuizen took 1/5 in his one over. Craig Viljoen and Zander Volgraaff opened the batting for Vikings, but Chrisjan Hendriks quickly claimed both their wickets. Craig had some success, scoring 19 from 11 balls before he was caught. Leon Furstenburg looked promising, but with his score on 29 (from 32 balls), he was caught by Nimesh Whatekar off the bowling of TE Smit. The only other batsman who could score double figures was Glen McLeod (10). The final wicket fell in the 17th over with the score on 91. Limpopo’s “old fox”, Joubert Fourie, claimed most of the wickets, ending with 3/23 in 2.5 overs. TE Smit (2/9 in 2), The winning team, Limpopo Dairy, in jubilant mood after beating Vikings in the final on Sunday. Vimal Shah (2/12 in 4) and Chrisjan Hendriks (2/12 in 4) did the rest of the damage.
