What is the mysterious creature that attacks the communities?

The ancestors are angry

Mr Thilivhali Zakaria Mukwevho-Neluvhola, photographed in front of the sacred mountain. By Ndivhuwo Musetha A few weeks ago, Limpopo Mirror published a story about a mysterious creature that has been terrorizing the community at Chavani and neighbouring villages. The creature, described as a “powerful four-legged creature with white teeth” allegedly attacked more than 25 people, normally just after sunset and before dawn. Since the incidents happened, rumours have started that the creature was attacking people because the ancestors of the Neluvhola-Vhakwevho family were angry about the torching of the Luvhola Mountain, just next to the village. In an exclusive interview one of the family members, Mr Thilivhali Zakaria Mukwevho-Neluvhola, said that a similar inexplicable thing happened in

Some of the old artefacts that are found on the mountain.

1976, “when part of this mountain collapsed and killed many people in the village of Chavani. That happened after some boys went to the mountain and collected some artefacts they found lying there.” He explained that the family had been forcibly removed from the mountain by the former government. “The ancestors of all Venda people inhibit this mountain. As a family, we are tasked with communicating with these ancestors, so that things can be calm in Venda. We even tried to advise people not to go the top of the mountain, but they ignored us. Some even come here for night prayers, which are against the wishes of our ancestors.” He said the fact that the mountain “is now left naked” after its torching also angered the ancestors. “The bush is a blanket for the ancestors,” he explained while taking us on a tour around

the mountain after introducing our journalist to his ancestors. According to him, workers from a funeral parlour once came across a giant snake in the mountain after they had ignored the warning not go to the mountain except for working on its surface where a family member was being buried. He also explained that his forefathers used bees to defeat their enemies during ancient times, hence the name Luvhola - bee sting. When asked what type of creature was attacking people, he said he could not tell what it might be, “because [the] ancestors are spiritual. When you talk about [the] ancestors, it is not something that you can see. It is spiritual. When they are angry, they react in different ways, coming in different formats,” he says. He also added that family members had never

experienced bad things on the mountain, except for hearing stories from people who had gone there uninvited. When asked how it would end, he said the family had already met on the mountain a few weeks ago and agreed to perform a ceremony that would please the ancestors. “We will ask for forgiveness on behalf of these people who angered our ancestors. Our appeal is that the community must refrain from climbing this mountain. They must not collect firewood or burn this mountain as it undermines our culture,” he says. He also confirmed that a land claim process has been submitted and accepted. The family, which is waiting for the final processes, says it will start to build houses around the mound early next month. “When we stay around this mountain, it will help to protect it,” he said.

“Homeland system not to be introduced again” The arrest of nine members of the community in the Vuwani area on the night of 20 August elicited strong reaction from the leader of the Pro-Makhado Demarcation Task Team, Mr Arnold Mulaudzi, after the arrest and subsequent appearance in court of the nine from different villages in the Vuwani area. The nine were detained at the Waterval police station before they appeared at the Vuwani Magistrate's Court the following day. Three were granted bail of R500 each and six were released without bail and were warned to appear in court again on 20 October. Their arrest follows the burning of

a police nyala vehicle a fortnight ago during the protests. During the same protests, two private vehicles were also set alight while two others were damaged. There was rampant looting of shops in the town of Vuwani after angry protesters, who had waited for Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha to address them, went on the rampage after he failed to pitch up. After learning of the news, Mulaudzi reacted angrily, describing the arrests as the most barbaric and desperate act ever seen in communities since the dawn of the democratic order. “The nine are activists who have, with the rest of the Vuwani community, waged war against the inclusion of the various villages to

legitimise the establishment of a homeland disguised as a municipality covering Malamulele and the Vuwani areas. Through their actions, the police have allowed themselves to be used like in the apartheid era to suppress the legitimate aspirations of our people.” He added that no amount of terror, including imprisonment, would suppress their feelings. “We shall march in unison to oppose homeland philosophies in whatever shape and character. The homeland system, in whatever name, remains a homeland system,” he said. “The homeland system shall not be re-introduced in our lifetime,” he concluded.

The burning of the police vehicle which led to the arrest of the nine.

No progress in Rambau-case No outcome has been rached yet in the case of Ronnie Rambau, the former senior regional magistrate from Louis Trichardt, who stands accused of accepting a bribe to influence a court case. Rambau appeared in the Messina Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 August, together with one of his co-accused, ex-prosecutor Estene Willemse. The third accused in the matter, attorney Tivoneleni Edmond Lubisi, was absent due to ill health. The trio made headlines three years ago when Rambau was arrested during a police trap. They were charged with corruption for allegedly influencing several court cases by means of predetermining the outcome and accepting money for their services. The case against Rambau, Willemse and Lubisi took an unexpected turn during a previous court appearance when Rambau asked the presiding magistrate to withdraw from the case. Rambau claimed that the magistrate had befriended some of the state witnesses and that this could have a negative influence on the outcome of his trial. When this application was dismissed, Rambau turned to both the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeals, who also dismissed his application to have the magistrate withdraw from the case. At the beginning of the year, Rambau approached the Constitutional

Court with the same application. This will mean that his criminal case will be put on hold until a decision is made by the court. At this stage, an answer is still forthcoming from the Constitutional Court, and it is unclear when the court will reach a verdict. After a brief appearance on Monday and Tuesday, al three’s case was postponed until 9 March 2016. Rambau, the newspaper has learnt in the meantime, is currently making a living as an advocate.

Worker dies when truck overturns A normal working day ended in tragedy for five colleagues on Tuesday afternoon. All of them were driving along the Vondeling road outside Louis Trichardt in their company's

small truck when the accident occurred. They are employed by LTT Palisade and were on their way back to the office to park the truck and head on home.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated, but it would seem that the driver lost control over the truck when the trailer it was hauling started to skid on the loose gravel. With this, the truck apparently started swivelling around dangerously. Because of this, the workers who had been sitting on the loading space on the back of the truck were flung from the truck. One woman was declared dead on the scene shortly after the accident. Her colleagues consoled each other while they were supported by Ockert de Lange from the Soutpansberg Town Watch assists one of the the Soutpansberg Town employees who sustained injuries during an accident late on Tuesday Watch and local rescue workers. Cluster commander Alex Seopa retires Members of the SAPS, community policing forum and traditional leaders around the Makhado policing area bade farewell to the Makhado Cluster Commander, Brig Alex Seopa, during a ceremony at the Elias Resort last Friday. Seopa retired from the police service after 36 years. He was recruited to the then SAP in 1979. He worked at serveral police stations, including Motetema, Sekhukhuni, Lebowakgomo, Mankweng and Polokwane and later became the Seshego Cluster Commader. In 2013, he

became the Cluster Commander of Makhado. During the event, Seopa said that is satisfied that he had served his country with dedication and faithfulness. "Although it was not always easy, I persevered until I had paved my way to success. I would also like to thank my former co-workers and subordinates for their support, because I wouldn’t have achieved everything on my own. Above all, I would like to thank God whose grace has made me what I am to this day." Makhado Cluster CPF chair-

person Mr Sampson described Seopa as a valuable asset, whose dedication and work experience would be missed. “He is irreplaceable, but we are happy because he has paved the way and we are enjoying the fruits of his hard labour today. We will always remember him as a father, whose wisdom will always drive us to work hard.” Makhado SAPS station commander Col Francois Ramovha wished Seopa well in his retirement. He depicted him as a true and professional policeman, who had dedicated his life to the fight against crime.

Young Imbelani a runner-up in SADC competition spiring moment for me was to shake hands with all 15 heads of state from SADC and to get a kiss on the cheek from Mr Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe,” said Matibe. The acting principal of the school, Ms Tshilidzi Madanda, said that she was happy that Nemudzivhadi had emulated other previous winners from the school, such as former principal Mr Nkhangweni Nemudzivhadi, who was the best manager in the country, Mr Mashudu Marubini, the best maths teacher nationally, and Rohula Bilankulu, a Grade 12 pupil who won the national moot court competition in 2012. Matibe was also in the Top 10 in the 2013 South Africa-Germany Essay Competition, part of the team that came first in the Roads Debate 2014, first in the provincial debate of the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) last year,

and the best speaker in the provincial SAASTA debate this year. The circuit manager, Mr Takalani Makakavhule, said Matibe’s achievement should work as a motivation for other pupils that anybody can achieve big things despite their geographical location. Young Imbelani was acknowledged by the Vhembe District Municipality during a council meeting held in Thohoyandou later on the same day. Veteran boxing champion Phillip Ndou, who has recently beaten Shauri Ramadhan from Tanzania in an international non-title fight held in Thohoyandou, was also acknowledged by the municipality, while newly crowned IBO welterweight champion Tsiko Mulovhedzi was also acknowledged in absentia.

A Grade 11 pupil from Thengwe Secondary has made the area proud by becoming one of the runners-up in the SADC Secondary Schools essay competition. Imbelani Matibe (16), of Mufulwi village (about 50 kilometers from Thohoyandou), was the best pupil in South Africa during the national competition and she qualified to represent her country in the SADC’s 15 member states. She won $500 for being a top learner in South Africa. During this regional competition held in Gaborone, Botswana, last week, Matibe finished in third position and won $750 and a laptop computer. The competition was held in conjunction with the SADC heads of state summit. Matibe, president of the learners’ representative council at her school, received a hero’s welcome when she and her parents arrived at the school last Thursday morning. Fellow pupils stood in a guard of honor from the school’s main gate, while a red carpet was also laid out for the entourage to walk on. In her speech, she thanked her English teacher, Maa-Khaoa Thabiso Mokoena, fellow debaters and parents for helping her to be one of the top three achievers. “The most in-

Masindi Mphephu kingship case to start in High Court on Monday The case in which the 24-yearold Masindi Clementine Mphephu contests the kingship of the Vhavenda is scheduled to start on Monday (31st) in the Thohoyandou High Court. The court case may, however, be dominated by technical legal issues. The applicants have asked the court to separate the issues

and first rule on the legality of the processes followed and jurisdiction. This request is opposed by the defendants. The case dates back to 2012, when Masindi Clementine Mphephu filed papers claiming that she should have been next in line for the throne but was overlooked because of gender discrimination.

Not long before that, President Jacob Zuma announced that the new king of the Vhavenda would be Toni Mphephu Ramabulana. Masindi is the only child of the late paramount chief of the Vhavenda, Tshimangadzo Mphephu (who ruled under the name Dimbanyika). There are two applicants in the Ad designed by Zoutnet Publishers

case and Masindi is joined by her uncle, Mbulaheni Charles Mphephu, eldest son of the late Patrick Mphephu. He argues that, should Masindi not be considered for the kingship position, he should be next in line. They applied to the court to set aside the decision of the president of South Africa and the premier of Limpopo to recognise Toni Mphephu as king. The respondents in the case include Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, President Jacob Zuma, the Limpopo premier as well as the national and provincial houses of traditional leaders. In the affidavits and replying affidavits filed, the parties disagree on the procedures followed to appoint a new heir. Mbulaheni and Masindi believe that, because Toni Ramabulana was appointed as ndumi to his half-brother Dimbanyika, he should not have been considered for the kingship position. The two applicants also argue that Toni Ramabulana does not come from the right dzekiso house. The dzekiso wife (or candle wife) is appointed according to certain customs and there may be more than one candle wife to make provision for cases where the first candle wife does not bear children. (This is, however, disputed by some of the respondents). In one of the latest affidavits filed, Mbulaheni Mphephu asks the court to separate the issues and give guidance in terms of the legal issues at stake. “Proceeding on this

basis is plainly convenient as it may avoid the need to refer disputes of fact to oral evidence and the leading of expert witnesses,” he states. The applicants ask the court to rule on several legal issues, which include the High Court’s jurisdiction in the matter, whether claims have prescribed in terms of certain Acts and whether there is an investigation pending with the Commission on Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims. The court is also being asked to determine whether the president’s decision to acknowledge Toni Mphephu should first be challenged and whether the legislation was in place to cause it to be a lawful decision. The outcome of the case may depend on the court’s interpretation of the rule of male primogeniture. The applicants argue that the Bill of Rights places an obligation o n

the government to develop customary law in line with the Constitution. “As a woman, the first applicant’s claim to the throne will be barred by the rule of male primogeniture. The only claim to title to be determined, in that event, will be that of the second applicant,” Mbulaheni Charles Mphephu states in his affidavit.

Miss Masindi Clementine Mphephu (24).

Desperate father is looking for his son The father of the missing Tsumbedzo Timothy Mutswaletswale (25) of Phiphidi outside Thohoyandou says he spends sleepless nights thinking about his son, who has been missing for some time. Timza, as he is known, is a state patient and has a tendency of disappearing and coming back and was last seen on 25 June. He was last seen wearing a pair of black trousers, brown shoes and a black jacket. He is of medium complexion, tall and has a medium-built body. His father, Mr Shonisani Gilbert Mutswaletswale, said his son had on two occasions gone away from home, but he managed to trace him and brought him home. “The last time I had to follow him to a park in Thohoyandou, where I found him without shoes. His phone was also missing as well as his bag of books. He told me he had attended a party, but he could not remember what had happened at the event,” said Mr Mutswaletswale. He said he had looked everywhere with relatives and friends but could not trace him anywhere. “I have done everything in the book and I sought help from three prophets, who all told me that he was around and safe. One cannot sleep, knowing that a member of the family is missing. I keep on hoping that he will

come back, but this is becoming more difficult for me as he is not coming back.” Those with information can contact Mr Mutswaletswale at 072 045 4194 or W/O Ndowiseni Radzilani at 082 222 9023.

8 28 August 2015 It was an opportunity of a lifetime for Patrick Tshinwamukovho Ndou (right) when he met his role model and multiple-award-winning hit maker Sir McKleker of Tapanyedza fame during the Phalaphala FM roadshow at Nzhelele at the weekend. Sir McKleker is currently one of the hottest properties in South African music circles. “I only hear his music on the radio. He is such a gifted artist and it was my dream to meet and touch him one day. If I die now, I will die a happy man because I have finally met this gifted man whom I admire so much,” said Patrick happily.

The Municipal Public Account Committee (MPAC) of the Mutale municipality is investigating allegations by the Democratic Alliance (DA) that the mayor, Cllr Sarah Rammbuda, recently used a municipal vehicle to attend an ANC conference. DA caucus leader Cllr Joseph Mariba said if Mayor Rammbuda was found guilty, she should resign from her office or pay back the money used on the trip. According to a statement from Mariba, it is alleged that Rammbuda used the council vehicle and also a municipal driver to transport her to the ANC Women’s League Conference that was held earlier this month at Irene near Pretoria. He said that Rammbuda was aware that no one is allowed to use state resources for personal events. An official at the MPAC, Mr Sampson Madumi, confirmed that they had received a letter from the DA, requesting an urgent investigation into the

matter. “We requested Cllr Rammbuda to respond to the allegations after we received the letter from DA and we are still investigating the matter,” said Madumi. Rammbuda has denied all claims made by Mariba and said that she knew nothing about the matter.

Child pornography in the spotlight “Many children are being involved in child pornography acts, but they are not aware that it is child pornography,” said Ms Prudance Ravhutendele of Bethesda Rehabilitation for Alcohol and Drug Abuse when she was addressing hundreds of learners from rural high schools. This was during a project against child pornography held at the Waterval Community Hall last Friday. “Lately, our province has been attacked by the child pornography problem,” she said. “This is mainly because people within our communities are not informed concerning this issue, especially parents and children. Parents need to work and cooperate with the police by reporting all incidents Photographed are (from left to right) Lovers Ngobeni (17), Ms Josephina Masilumpana, Surprise of child pornography to them.” She indicated that it was the reason why the Maluleke (17) and Vuxa Baloyi (17). centre had hosted awareness on child pornography aimed at educating young people about child pornography and the Children’s Act and their rights. “No adults are allowed to watch sexually explicit visual material with minors,” she said. “Such acts are deemed as sexual child abuse, and our children need to know all about this.” Pupils had an opportunity to participate in mind-opening debates in small groups. They debated topics such as: “Can teenage pregnancy be eradicated?”, “Should minors who participate in child pornography be charged?” and “Is corporal punishment a solution to discipline children?” The schools which participateed are Tiyani Academy, Waterval High, Nwamalobye High, Russel Bungeni High and Hluvuka High. Waterval High School took the trophy for teenage pregnancy eradication topic. For the topic on child pornography, the trophy went to Hluvuka High School. Tiyani Academy took the trophy on the corporal punishment topic. Tiyani High School’s Lovers Ngobeni (17), said: “The competition was awesome, challenging and In our photograph are, from left to right, Ms Prudance Ravhutevhele, Musa Mthabela (17), Ms exciting. We learnt a lot pertaining to child pornogJosephina Masilumpana (Surat), Khanyisa Hlungwane (16) and Lufuno Kangani (19). The three raphy and we hope to share with our school mates what we have learnt here today.” pupils are from Tiyani High School.

Adv Faith Mudau said that pupils must learn to know what they want in life. “Don’t just follow your friends wherever they go,” she said. “Many youths get diverted from focusing on their dreams or future because of friends who tell them that this and that is good. You cannot aim high and then you just sit back, fold your arms and still expect to achieve what you have aimed at.” Bethesda Rehabilitation for Alcohol and Drug Abuse is an organisation which was established to address issues of substance abuse and prevent substance abuse in the rural areas.

Musina youth to participate in Narysec programme Twenty-two young people from Ward 1 in Musina left for Bloemfontein last week to participate in the National Rural Youth Service Corps (Narysec). A brainchild of the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, the programme runs for two years and its main goal is to recruit and equip indigent rural youths with skills sufficient to enable them to perform community service in their own communities. It was established in September 2010 and has already trained thousands of rural youths who are now able to create jobs for themselves.

Among other skills to be learnt are combating HIV/Aids through spiritual and ethical conduct, basic self-defence skills, breaking barriers to entry into the public service orientation programme, basic administration, project administration, basic budgeting, construction, agriculture and disaster management. Before leaving, the beneficiaries had a farewell meeting with Mayor Mihloti Ramoyada, who urged them to concentrate on the programme and work hard for the next two years. “This government is creating a lot of opportunities for you young

people of South Africa. It is advisable to grab these opportunities with both hands. Our municipality is happy to note that this initiative will go a long way in addressing issues of poverty and unemployment, especially among the poorest of the poor in our communities. We wish you all the best.” One of the beneficiaries is Tshiwela Siziba, who says the initiative will assist her to improve her life: “I’m very happy to be part of this life-changing initiative, and I will work hard to make sure that the government does not spend money in vain.”

The mayor of the Thulamela local municipality, Cllr Grace Mahosi, has called for the total emancipation of women to be made a priority and added that the place of women was not the kitchen and that gender equality was not negotiable. She addressed councilors, academics and Univen students during a gala dinner that followed the speech by former president Thabo Mbeki during a symposium on gender mainstreaming that was held about a fortnight ago. The dinner took place at the Khoroni Hotel. “In South Africa, women have, for decades, played a critical role in the struggle for liberation. They have also contributed immensely in the process of building a united, democratic, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous South Africa. It is not surprising therefore that there is a month dedicated to women on the country’s calendar,” added Mahosi. She mentioned that she was very confident that the unique challenges facing women in local communities would receive full attention and solutions during this month and beyond. “The ANC-led government remains hopeful to see a greater reduction in both domestic violence and rape,” she added. According to her, women are a critical component for relieving poverty as a national priority and for the

promotion of a broadened economic empowerment programme that seeks to benefit everyone. “There should be an urgent need for more involvement in women’s entrepreneurial development. Greater emphasis should be placed on funding women entrepreneurship, not only in South Africa, but across the world. It is only when women are afforded the opportunity to lead in the academic fraternity that transformation can be fast-tracked,” she said.

Mayor Grace Mahosi.

Hulisani MuloiwaPhosiwa Hulisani Muloiwa-Phosiwa, a presenter of PhalaPhala FM, is the kind of woman who believes that women should look inside their hearts and see a true reflection of inner womanhood, which will also project an external positive reflection for strength. And when you engage her about her growing up, you conclude she grew up with a small radio as a toy. “I come from a family of radio addicts and I, too, was bound to be one, but I went a step further by becoming a radio presenter myself,” she said. “My love for radio grew even stronger when a community radio station was built in my vicinity in the late 90s and brought radio so much closer to the people.” Hulisani always saw a radio presenter in herself, and she always heard a radio voice each time she spoke or sang. “I used to record myself, using a cassette player and pretending to be a news reader and presenting a music show,” she said. She indicated that she had always been very much in love with radio. “And I am

glad God granted my wish, when my dream became a reality in 2007 as I joined PhalaPhala FM,” said the presenter, who also boasts very good singing capabilities. “The most important issue about women’s month is that women should lean on their own inner strength because they can become whatever they want to be in life. It is also awesome to put God first and loving oneself,” she stated. Having joined Phalaphala FM about eight years ago, Hulisani’s versatility has allowed her to present different programmes at the station. Today she presents Khoroni between Tuesday and Friday from 24:00 to 03:00. On Sundays, she presents Hu Bvuma Yone Fhedzi between 10:00 and 12:00 and Jazz between 13:00 and 14:00. She loves wearing jeans, T-shirts and dresses. “Sadly, I battle to walk in heels, so I keep a handy pair of flats in my bag just in case my toes give in,” she said. “As for my music taste, I’m a music ‘all-rounder’, but my personal favourite genre is jazz, of course. I enjoy watching cricket, athletics and gymnastics. I’m addicted to reading autobiographies, novels and Christian literature.”

“Female offenders must celebrate womanhood and motherhood” - Netshishivhe “Being behind bars does not mean that you are dead. It means that you have the chance to be corrected and become a better person.” Those were the words of the Thulamela Municipality's Cllr Salphina Mulaudzi during the celebration of women’s month in the Thohoyandou Female and Juvenile Centre. The event was attended by Mulaudzi, delegates from the Phiriphiri parliamentary constituency office at Tshidimmbini and other stakeholders.

The head of the female and juvenile centre, Ms Joyce Rambuda, said that it was important for the female inmates to celebrate womanhood and motherhood. “We need to support the offenders, so that when they are released, they can use the skills they got while they were in prison,” Rambuda said. She added that different rehabilitation programmes, such as needlework and hairdressing as well as manufacturing of sanitary towels, were being offered to female offenders.

Ms Anna Netshishivhe of Phiriphiri's paliamentary constituency office said that it was important to celebrate Women’s Day with female offenders, so that they could see that the community still cared for them, even though they had committed crimes. “It is good to know that offenders are given the opportunity to further their studies while in prison,” she said. The guests had the opportunity to visit the laundry and textile workshop where

offenders were being kept busy knitting clothes for offenders. One of the female offenders stated that it is good for them to celebrate women’s month "as it shows us that we are still alive. I feel very happy about celebrating Women’s Day.” She added that women needed to stand up and work for themselves.

“We are living in a free country which is also full of opportunities.” Rambuda urged the community to welcome back the offenders when they get released from prison. “We know they committed crimes, but we urge the community to forgive and accept them when they are released,” she said.

Thulamela Municipality's Cllr Salphina Mulaudzi addressed female offenders at the Thohoyandou Female and Juvenile Centre.

The office was official opened under the supervision of a member of parliament, Mr Moses Tse-

li, and was attended by different traditional leaders, traditional healers, members of the community, different community structures and politicians. According to Tseli, the central theme of the constituency work is to take Parliament to the people. “The ultimate goal of the constituency work includes integrating the work of MPs, MPLs, and councillors with the programme

of the ANC as well as aligning Parliament’s oversight work with those of the organisation’s constituency work,” said Tseli. Muthambi warned office bearers of the office not to ask for people’s political affiliation when rendering service. She said the office was representing parliament and it meant copies of the president’s speeches would be available at the office.

The Raluswielo branch of the ANC Women’s League gathered at the Mbaleni Cemetary on Saturday to pay homage to the late political activist, Florance Masakona of Makwarela township. She passed away in 2007. Members of the Women’s League first cleaned up around the grave of the late Masakona and then lay a wreath at the grave. They later presented R1 000 to Ms Emmah Masakona, the mother of the late Florance. They held the event as part of wrapping up Women’s Month. Masakona was an active member of ANC Women’s League-Raluswielo branch during her time on the earth.

Two more finalists for coveted Tshima

Vhaneiwa Heavenly Voices.

Two finalists for the Tshima awards are the Vhaneiwa Heavenly Voices and rhumba star Tshifhiwa Rabambukwa. Due to a lack of space, Limpopo Mirror couldn’t publish profiles of them before, but this week the spotlight shines on them. A relative newcomer in the music industry, gospel group Vhaneiwa Heavenly Voices made many old groups eat humble pie when they were nominated in the gospel category of the Thima Awards. The 21-member group’s debut album, Vhaneiwa Project 1, is receiving massive airplay and tracks like Nemashango, Subscriber and Vhofaneliwa have already found their way into the hearts of gospel music lovers. Recorded live at the Thohoyandou Town Hall in 2014, the album is selling well and it is no wonder one of its songs, Nemashango, earned them a Tshima nomination. To vote for Vhaneiwa Heavenly Voices, SMS the word Gospel, followed by the letter B to 33459. For Rhumba star Tshifhiwa Rabambukwa, just to be nominated for a Tshima means a lot.

The 28-year-old star from Tshipise-Sagole in the Mutale area recently released his fifth album, Tshifheti Ndi Shaka Volume 5. He has been nominated in the Tshingondo category. Tshifheti Ndi Shaka Volume 5 is performing very well comercially and this makes him very confident that he will emerge victorious in the compettition. “I am greatly humbled; the mere nomination of my song Tshifheti Ndi Shaka shows the confidence the fans have in me. I believe they will also show it by voting for me,” said the humble artist. To vote for Rabambukwa, SMS the word Tshingondo, followed by the letter E to 33459.

Chief Matsila sponsors soccer kits for gogos The two gogo soccer teams, Matanda elderly team from Nzhelele and Matsila could not believe their eyes when both teams received a soccer kit from Chief Livhuwani Matsila. The official handing over of kit was held at Rabali on Saturday. Chief Matsila said it touched him after he learned that the old ladies were playing soccer without proper sports attire. He

said the old women were a true example of women empowerment, because they were displaying that there was no longer a sporting code for a certain gender. “You are keeping your bodies healthy and you must remember that a healthy body harbours a healthy mind. Let’s do away with the idea that elders are supposed to sit at home, doing nothing until sunset,” he added.

He encouraged the elderly to keep up their active lifestyles. “You are a very good example to your children and grandchildren and we hope that they will follow in your footsteps.” Vho-Ester Ratshalingwa, captain of the Matanda elderly team, said that she felt young again. “Exercising is really helping me a lot, and I also enjoy playing football,” she added.

Benny’s Care Soccer Academy performed admirably once more when they won the provincial finals of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup at the Mahwelereng Stadium on Saturday. They played to a 1-all draw with Mmamoka High, but in the penalty shootout they scored one goal more than the team from Capricorn. With their 6-5 victory, Benny’s received R100 000 and won a shot at the R1 million prize money for South Africa’s richest school competition. In the 30th minute, the well-timed shot of Gift Khangale of Benny’s missed the poles by a whisker. Zano Muleba of Benny’s dribbled past a number of defenders and scored in the 35th minute, making the score 1-0 at the break. TNN’s best players receive rewards

It is do-or-die for United Artists United Artists will participate in the Mukula Young Santos represented the much-awaited provincial promotional play- Vhembe Region in a similar event at the Giyani offs at the Mahwelereng Stadium in Moko- Stadium last year, but they did not win even a pane this weekend. single match. United Artists will represent Vhembe Region in the two-day event. Five teams from the five regions, Boyne Young Tigers (Capricorn), United Artists (Vhembe), Schinord Chiefs (Sekhukhune), Happy Hearts (Waterberg) and Nkowankowa Barcelona (Mopani), will take part in the tournament. United Artists were crowned the Vhembe overall champions after beating Rabali Pull Together 1-0 in the final for the regional playoffs at the Rabali Stadium early last month. The boys from Lufule village will pin their hopes on their playmakers, Lucky Siobo and Thomas “Razor” Makhubele, while the team’s top goal scorer, Vutomi Ngomana, is expected to force the opponents’ defence to run for cover from the onset to the bitter end. Artists’ opening match will be against Nkowankowa Barcelona, with whom they will lock horns tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 10:00. Their second fixture is against Boyne Young Tigers at 14:00. Their last two matches will be played on Sunday. They will test their strength against Schinord Chiefs at 08:00, while their match against Happy Hearts is scheduled for 12:00. The top two teams at the end of the tournament will be promoted to the ABC Motsepe League. United Artists’ playmaker, Lucky Siobo.

The players of Tshakhuma Na Ndilani (TNN), one of the affiliates of the MMK Administrators League, held their awards ceremony at the hall of the Levubu Laerskool a fortnight ago, When addressing the guests, the chairman of Black Leopards, Mr David Thidiela, praised the management of TNN for their dedication, saying that running an amateur team had more challenges than a professional team. He appealed to the young players to stay away from sexual activities, drugs and alcohol and emphasized that they must work hard in the classroom and on the sports field. Fhatuwani Mudau, who scored 26 goals during the past season, received the scorer of the year award and received R500, a trophy and soccer boots. The goal of the season award went to Gift Nemutandani, who received R400, a trophy and soccer boots. The players’ player of the season, Sedzazwau Mushoma, received R600, a trophy and soccer boots. The most disciplined player, Thabiso Lekgau, received R800, a trophy and soccer boots. Tshifhango Muuladzi, the goalkeeper of the season, received R500, a trophy and soccer boots. Rofhiwa “Danger” Netshiungani took home the most experienced player award. Netshiungani played for several semi-professional, teams including the now-defunct Rospa United, before joining TNN. The team’s captain, Nndwamato “Becham”

Miriri, was presented with the player of the season award. He received R900, a trophy and soccer boots. During the ceremony, the president of the Safa Vhembe Regional League, Mr George Kubayi, stated that his association was going to root out all corrupt activities in his association next season.

Mvudi Athletics Club plead for financial assistance Mvudi Athletics Club, which has produced many national and provincial athletes, is on the brink of collapse and could soon cease to exist if a Good Samaritan does not pitch up to rescue the club. The club, formed in 1990, used to have more than 400 members, but today only 200 are left because of financial difficulties. Most members come from disadvantaged communities and can hardly afford training kit and registration fees. Mr Baldwin Masutha, the club's founder, said things were not going as expected and that the main challenge was finance and sponsorships. Speaking during a welcoming function to welcome two new members, author Freddy Mufamadi (38) of Mashau Bodwe and soccer player Thuso Masindi (21) of Mashau Thenga, Masutha Mvudi Athletics Club founder Baldwin Masutha, said with a broken heart that people flanked by his new charges,Thuso Masindi and still had faith in his club, despite the challenges they were facing. Freddy Mufamadi.

“This region has a lot of talent which, at the end of the day, goes to waste because it cannot be nurtured because of a lack of funds. Athletics is a lucrative sport and many from this area could be making big money from it if properly guided, but we are losing them because of no support. We are appealing to businesses out there to come on board, so we can develop this sport which could make a career for many,” he said. Masutha added that he was busy with the development of eight-year-olds, whom he trains at Univen. “We are busy preparing for the Musina Two Countries Marathon that takes place on the 29th of September 2015 and the Nedbank Soweto Marathon, which takes place later this year. We also need sponsorship for transport, registration and licences for the club," said Masutha. Interested people or organisations wishing to help can phone Masutha at 079 615 7758.

Last year, the fun walk that started from MTG Funerals with a choice of a 5, 10 and 15 km walk and the musangwe drew thousands of participants including Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, Thovhele Kennedy Tshivhase, Vhembe executive mayor Tshitereke Matibe and many traditional leaders. Expectations are that it will pull a bigger crowd this year. In an interview with Limpopo Mirror, Mphephu Ramabulana said that the event was more than a walk and watching musangwe, "but a promotion of unity among the Vhavenda nation and promoting Vhavenda culture. Yes, the event is my initiative, together with the organisers of the festival, as we jointly believe the culture of our forefathers comes second to none. We believe this is an opportune time for us to be together and spend the day with our people." The king said he could not underplay the importance of the fun walk in terms of the health side. “We all need healthy bodies to do our work Vhembe executive mayor Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, Thovhele Gole properly and some of us are inviting diseases that Mphaphuli and King Toni Mphephu (right) lead walkers on the 15km could be avoided just by exercising. Thohoyandou Technical the Ifani champs Gogo Selina steers her team to victory Two goals scored in the first half and another in the second against Liivha were enough to make Thohoyandou Technical High School successfully defend their title in the Ifani Choicebuild Soccer Tournament. The coach of the team, Mr Mbonisi Ndlovu said they did not relax after winning the competition last year. “We knew they would plan to topple us this year and we made it a point to train hard and we were in shape for the tournament. We are very thankful for the

support we received from the principal and the management and I believe this also played a part and boosted the moral of our players,” he said. The principal, Mr Phillip Netshirondoni was very excited about his school defending their title. “This spells good for our school and shows that we are not only focussed on the academic side but also on sports, which could be a lifelong career to some,” he said. For their effort, the school received R2 000, a trophy, soccer kit and two soccer balls.

All the participating teams did not go home empty-handed as the runners-up, Liivha, received R1 000 and two soccer balls. The third-placed team, Thohoyandou Secondary, received R700 and a soccer ball and Thohoyandou Secondary, who finished in the last position, received R300 cash and a soccer ball. The player of the tournament, Zwivhuya Tshisaphungo, received R150, while top goal scorers Zwivhuya Tshisaphungo and Petrus Raseluma also received R150 cash each.

The winning team, Thohoyandou Technical High, that won the Ifani Tournament for the second time.

down by shooting aimlessly at the goal finish. Matsila rectified their mistakes soon afterwards. Their midfielder-cum-striker, Sophy Thenga, beat the offside trap and faced the stranded keeper, Johana Khorombi, only to lose possession at the goal finish. The referee flashed the first yellow card in the 30th minute. Maria Mudau of Matsila obstructed Maria Thasana and the referee was lenient enough to let her go with yellow. No goals were scored in the first half. In the second half, Matsila were all over their opponents and attacked from all angles. Their goal came in the 80th minute. Selina Netshitungulu beat the keeper, Elsie Mamegwa, after dribbling past two defenders in a row. Matanda then tried everything within their reach in search of the equaliser, but it was not their day.

as was done by Phillip Ndou, Cassius Baloyi, Isaac Hlatswayo and others. Ndou also attended the function. Mulovhedze said that he was happy that he had fulfilled his father's dream of becoming a world champion. He also thanked his uncle, Mr Andries Mulovhedzi, a big boxing fan and business person, who supported him from his days as an amateur. The Chief Whip of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Tshifhiwa Dali, urged local businesspeople to support Mulovhedzi financially as it was done by Dr Motshekga and his uncle, Andries Molovhedzi. The boxer’s elder sister, Avhasei Mulovhedzi, described her younger brother as “a very quiet person who speaks little, but does a lot of talking in the boxing ring.”

Excellent start for Lidoda Duvha Seedat Ebrahim of Milano (right) and Jabulani Ndebele of Leopards chase the ball.

Leonard Ntshangase of Leopards controls the high ball, while Coldrin Coetzee of Milano is on his heels.

Black Leopards were out of touch for the better part of the first half, but the visitors from Cape Town failed to capitalize on this. Lidoda Duvha were lucky not to concede an own goal during the first 20 minutes. At that stage, Milano were doing as they pleased within the Leopards’ danger area. Lidoda Duvha conceded four corner kicks during the first half. Leopards’ right back, Marks Munyai, denied Milano a sure goal in the 18th minute. He cleared the ball from the goal line for a corner kick. The only time Black Leopards threatened to score in the first half was when Bongani Manana tried his luck from the 25-meter area. A defender of Milano, Aphiwe Mhlongo, braved the shot and cleared the ball away with a header. The home side effected a change to their starting lineup in the 29th minute. They introduced Meshack Maphangule for

Ndamulelo Mungadi. Leopards’ captain, Leonard Ntshangase, was warned with a card for a late tackle on Coldrin Coetzee three minutes before the half-time whistle. Leopards strengthened their defence by replacing Kgabo Mashiane with Khunadi Nkoana early in the last half. A defender of Milano, Mzwanele Mahase, handled the ball within his own penalty box and the referee awarded a penalty against his team. Roggert Nyundu converted from the penalty spot. Leopards then used their last substitution by replacing Bongani Manana with Thembisani Nevhulamba. Khunadi Nkoana of Leopards was also booked for obstruction in the 76th minute. A substitute, Thembisani Nevhulamba, was on target after a neat pass from Leonard Ntshangase two minutes afterwards. Nevhulamba came close to scoring again in the 86th minute, but his shot hit the side netting.
