Doctor says the Human Rights Commission could find no evidence to support segregated toilet claim

Toilet issue fizzles away By Isabel Venter

The fuss surrounding their so-called racial toilet policy is nothing more than hogwash. Dr Freddie Harris of the Blouberg Animal Clinic in Louis Trichardt confirmed this week that the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) could find no evidence in support of the claims made in an article of the Sowetan newspaper. The SAHRC was quick to investigate after the article appeared in the Sowetan of 12 November, stating that the animal clinic allegedly has separate toilets for black and white people. Their journalist allegedly used the toilet reserved for “black” people and found it was located outside and behind the main building, while the toilets for “whites” were inside the clinic. Harris said on Monday that these claims were nothing more than lies and explained what had happened on the day before the article appeared in the press. Even though the public are not allowed to use the clinic’s bathrooms, for the

simple reason of sick and/or dangerous animals and controlled chemicals and poison being kept on site, Harris still allowed it that day. He was approached by a young black man, who was not a client, who wanted to use the staff toilet. Despite having to serve numerous clients at that particular moment, Harris asked one of

“This place is not like any other normal business; the things we work and deal with can hold serious risks for the general public” his staff members to show the young man the toilet. “This place is not like any other normal business; the things we work and deal with can hold serious risks for the general public,” said Harris. He further explained that one of the four toilets in the building is a no-go area because dips and chemicals are dispensed there. “Employees who have to enter that toilet wear mandatory safety

and protective gear,” said Harris. One toilet is not part of the office or surgery and is part of a private flat where veterinarians of the clinic sleep if they have to work late in the evening. The remaining two bathrooms are for the exclusive use of Blouberg staff only – one situated inside the clinic and one outside. The outside toilet offers the same facilities as the inside one and is also adjacent to the employees’ changing rooms. These two bathrooms are being shared by black and white employees alike, said Harris. “The SAHRC talked to all the employees and said afterwards that none of the employees had a complaint that they were told which toilets they had to use. They can use any toilet that they want to,” said Harris. Following their investigation, the SAHRC recommended that the clinic convene a staff meeting in which all staff are re-informed, in writing, that they are still free to use any toilet of their choosing. This meeting took place on Monday. At the time of our going to press, the SAHRC had yet to confirm the matter as finalized.

Francois was by die Suid-Afrikaanse Vloot by Simonstad gestasioneer.

MAKHADO CARE GROUP IS A NON PROFIT ORGANISATION WHICH ASSISTS WITH THE CARE OF CANCER PATIENTS IN THE MAKHADO AREA CONTACT DETAILS: Dr Casper Venter: 082 857 0022 Dr Emil Gaiger: 082 892 8862 Jernay Mcleod: 083 403 5752 Angela Brennan: 082 902 6271

Champions Academy broadens base Champions Combined Academy, just west of Louis Trichardt, will not be hosting Grade 4 to 7 next year but instead will be broadening its foundation phase with particular emphasis on developing strong mathematical concepts. “Many, if not most, of the problems that students encounter with mathematics in secondary school and later can be traced to a poor mathematical foundation in the first grades. Next year, the school will be up to Grade 3. We

integrate the CAPS curriculum of the government with an e-learning maths programme from Canada that is one of the best in the world,” the school’s principal, Ms Sonja Prinsloo, said and added that literacy development also receives strong emphasis at the school. Next year, there will be two Grade PR classes, two Grade R classes, with one Grade 1, one Grade 2 and one Grade 3 class. In 2016, a Grade 4 class will be added. The school will take in 200 children. Some room is still available and parents

have to bring their children (Grade 1 to 3) for diagnostic tests to evaluate at what level they will be accommodated. Hostel facilities will be available at the school premises for children from Grade R. Champions Combined Academy is a Christian school that has been operating on its present premises for more than a decade. For more information regarding the closing down of Grade 4 to 7 next year and the broadening of the foundation phase, Prinsloo or Ms Mavis Lehaiwa can be contacted on 084 700 7960.

André Manshaarkappers sny weer hare Hierdie Desember sal die hare weer waai by André Manshaarkappers, danksy ‘n nuwe eienaar. Kliënte is welkom enige tyd by die salon. Die salon sal nog steeds vanuit dieselfde perseel as wat wyle André gewerk het bedryf word by Krugerstraat 113. Viir meer inligting, skakel Rita gerus by tel. 071 172 8583.

Tourist remains in critical condition after buffalo attack The condition of the 66-year-old tourist who was critically injured during a near-fatal attack by a wounded buffalo at the Pafuri River Camp on 14 November remains unchanged. On Wednesday, 26 November, he was still in a critical condition in the Polokwane Provincial Hospital’s intensive care unit. The attack occurred a mere 50 metres away from the campsite, while he and a fellow tourist were out bird-watching. The wounded buffalo attacked without any provocation or making its presence known beforehand. The man suffered severe abdominal and chest injuries after the buffalo had gored him with its horns. Following the attack, camp co-owner Mr Vaughan van Niekerk stated that the attack could have been avoided if they had

been informed that there was a wounded buffalo in the camp area. He said that they were able to determine that the buffalo was wounded during a botched hunting trip in the Madimbo Corridor some 40 kilometres away from their campsite about three weeks prior to the attack. The buffalo was then, according to Van Niekerk, pursued by officials from the Department of Environmental Affairs in an effort to put it down. The buffalo was chased onto the property of Pafuri River Camp the day before the attack but, said Van Niekerk, neither they nor the surrounding villagers had been alerted to this fact. The Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), was asked to comment on Van Niekerk’s claims that environmental

affairs officials had chased the wounded buffalo and that the attack could have been avoided if they had been made aware that the buffalo was there. Mr Burckles Napo, LEDET provincial liaison officer, responded just after our going to press last week. “LEDET is aware of the incident. Our officials were deployed in the area to look for the animal. We responded immediately after we heard about [the] wandering injured animal to prevent further damage,” he stated. It is not clear whether he was referring to the initial chase of the wounded animal after the botched hunt, or to the day of the attack at Pafuri River Camp, with the buffalo eventually being put down. He was again asked to clarify. At the time of our going to press this week, a response was still being awaited.

Court News

Three suspects in Desai murder granted bail The three suspects held in custody the past month in connection with the brutal murder of Mr Bhavesh Desai (43) were granted bail this week in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court. Rose Makhavhlu (42) and Patricia Livhuwani Netshisaulu (37) of Nzhelele were arrested on Tuesday, 7 October, and shortly afterwards, Liremi Mbulaheni Madilongamakatu (31) was arrested in connection with the murder. All three of them, charged with murder, appeared together in court on Friday (21st) and again on Monday (24th) when they brought their bail application.

During the trio’s appearance there was a heavy presence of armed policemen to ensure their safety. The State asked that the three not be released on bail as their lives might be in danger. This was in reference to other suspects in the matter who have not yet been arrested. Provincial police spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike confirmed at a previous appearance that Makhavhlu and her co-accused were suspected of being the accomplices of the people who had shot and killed Bhavesh. Bhavesh was shot dead by an unknown number of suspects, who had followed

him to his home at Wylliespoort after he had been visiting family in Eltivillas in Louis Trichardt. When Bhavesh tried to flee from his home’s gate in his car, the attacker(s) opened fire on him with a semi-automatic rifle before fleeing from the scene. Liremi was granted R2 000 bail and, upon payment, was released. Makhavhlu and Netshisaulu were both granted R5 000 each. At the time of our going to press it could not be confirmed whether they had paid the amounts. All three will have to appear in court again on 23 January 2015.

Public outrage over damage to baobabs The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry is due to meet with the Department of Transport to discuss the correct and acceptable procedures to be followed when bush clearing is done along provincial roads. This was the commitment given by Ms Shumani Dzivhani from the Forest Regulation and Oversight Directorate in response to a media enquiry by the Zoutpansberger regarding the unacceptable, and possibly illegal, manner in which bush clearing was done along the D2692 road between Musina and Venetia Mine. As part of a provincial contract (contract number PUDP 573), put out on tender by the Department of Transport, Global Roads (Pty) Ltd was appointed to clear the road reserve on this stretch of provincial road. The clearing of the road reserve, however, sparked outrage among residents after people noticed that several baobab trees within the road reserve had been severely damaged by contract workers. In some cases it appears that baobab branches were not even cut but were torn off trees. Many of these branches were merely left tangling from the trees, while others that had been cut off were not even removed but left under the trees. “So which is more dangerous: branches in a tree or branches left within the road reserve?” is what Ms Ralda van Wyk wanted to know. She has an immense love for baobab trees and was devastated when she saw the damage done to the trees while traveling along the road about two weeks ago.

Baobab trees are listed as a protected tree in terms of Section 15(1) of the National Forest Act of 1998. The Act states that “no person may cut, disturb, damage or destroy any protected tree or possess, collect, remove, transport, export, purchase, sell, donate or in any other manner acquire or dispose of any protected tree”. The list of protected trees, as published in the Government Gazette of 7 September 2012, totals 47 tree species. Some of the other trees listed as protected include the marula and leadwood (Hardekool) tree. Van Wyk took photos of the damaged trees and sent them through to the Zoutpansberger. Copies of the photos were sent through to both the local and provincial offices of the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) for comment. The newspaper wanted to know whether LEDET was aware of the situation and whether any actions will be taken against the contractor. Apart from Mr Dzivhani’s response, Mr Allan McMurtrie of LEDET’s local office also reacted. “I have informed our enforcement guys; they will investigate and inform me on the outcome,” Mr McMurtrie stated. In the meantime, Van Wyk informed the Zoutpansberger that, since taking the photos a couple of weeks ago, she has spotted more baobab trees being damaged on the same road more recently. “I am glad the authorities are going to react, but the sad part is that they cannot correct the damage already done to the trees,” Van Wyk said.

Municipal News

Public Protector clears Musina Council The Office of the Public Protector has cleared the Musina Municipality of allegations of nepotism, corruption and price increases of a strategic planning session, which was held in Phalaborwa in March 2013. The communications manager of the Musina Municipality, Mr Wilson Dzebu, says the investigations were a result of media reports and complaints from some local individuals who approached the Office of the Public Protector to investigate the municipality. “We are glad to report to our people that the Office of the Public Protector has investigated and cleared us of the allegations relating to alleged nepotism through the appointment of friends and relatives of senior municipal officials. We were also cleared of allegations that some of the positions filled are not in the municipal organogram and that some job applications were submitted late and by fax. We were also investigated on the allegations that some of the appointed candidates did not meet the job requirements and that salary adjustments were done without following the correct procedures.” In connection with the allegations relating to

the inflation of prices when the municipality hosted a strategic planning session in March 2013, Dzebu added that the allegations were carefully investigated by the Office of the Public Protector “and no wrongdoing was found on the part of the municipality. We would like to assure our people that we will continue to deliver quality services and implement clean administration to bring a better life for all,” he concluded.

African Choir inspires South Koreans to visit Soutpansberg

A delegation from Seoul, South Korea, recently visited Louis Trichardt on a fact-finding mission. The team of five are from the Sungmin Foundation and filmed three promotional documentary videos with the Agapé African Choir as the main theme. They interviewed the Makhado municipal manager, among others, and also filmed in Chavani in the Elim area. The Sungmin Foundation, the largest

facility for the disabled in South Korea, is connected to the Nowon Full Gospel Church. “We received a visit from the choir and when we saw all of the positive elements of the choir, we wanted to jump right in and create friendship. They came to Korea first and we thought it was our turn to come back to South Africa,” said spokesperson for the team, Ms Vanessa Won. She explained that they came to

interview various groups from different backgrounds, from different economic levels and different colours, members and non-members of the choir. “We conducted and filmed interviews just to get the overall feel and an objective picture of the choir and its impact on the community. We believe that the choir can thrive more in impacting the world with its skills, heart and creativity,” Won said. “The purpose of doing this is to create promotional video clips with three targets: churches in Korea and outside Korea, welfare foundations, not just the Sungmin Foundation but the other foundations in Korea, and also regular, secular middle-sized corporations,” the leader of the team, businessman Mr Mike Lee, said. They had a five-year plan in mind that could hopefully benefit the Sungmin Foundation, as well as the choir. The Sungmin Foundation, which focuses on both the physically and mentally handicapped, always needs to create an inflow to meet their budget. Plaaslike komponis se werke in Europa gehoor

jaar oud was. My eerste werkie was vir klavier, iets wat ek seker my hele lewe sal onthou.

Motoring News

The world’s favourite pony is soon coming to a Ford dealer near you The Ford Mustang was and still is a legendary car. Buyers are already counting down the days until the world’s favourite pony car will finally be for sale locally. Ford has already whet the appetite by exhibiting the Mustang at various car shows across the country. Local dealers are set to officially open the order books in January next year for the official introduction at the end of 2015. Traditionally the Mustang has been an American car,

but the new one is regarded as truly a global product with a more sophisticated design. Luckily Ford has not forgotten what driving a Mustang is all about, and the new 2015 models still offer plenty of muscle under the hood. In addition to an efficient new four-cylinder EcoBoost engine, Ford still offers a 5-litre V8 ‘Stang. Other features, new to the Mustang, will include an independent rear suspension (transforming the way it handles) and driving aids such as blind spot informa-

tion systems and cross traffic alert. The new Mustang has been developed with impressive performance, driving dynamics and usability in mind, and includes a significant amount of advanced driver convenience and driver aid technologies. Aesthetically the new Mustang still remains, for the most part, true to its design heritage. It has a low, wide stance, sporting a long bonnet, sloping fastback roofline and signature ‘shark bite’ front design, and tri-

bar taillights. The roomy interior design embraces the modern day trend with an available eight-inch colour screen, Ford Sync with voice control and a premium 12-speaker sound system. Ford Mustang convertible drivers will appreciate the standard multilayer insulated cloth top that gives the car an upscale appearance and a quiet cabin. The top has a sleek profile when folded for open-air motoring. Ford also ensured that all the muscle of the Mustang will stay on the road. The new ‘Stang offers a brand new suspension system at both ends, including an integral-link independent rear axle, which the company believes will make the muscle car well suited for demanding African roads. The Mustang has also been fitted with a traction control system that includes torque vectoring that can direct power to individual wheels when needed, honing its stability features. New aluminium rear knuckles help reduce unsprung mass for improved ride and handling. Mustang models destined for South African shores will be confirmed at a later date. Locally, Mr Rampie Gilfillan of Ford Louis Trichardt, said that they were just as proud as the mother company of the arrival of the Mustang in South Africa and can’t wait to see it driving on local roads. Hilux’s Legend 45 package may make the wait worthwhile The launch date of the next-generation Toyota Hilux bakkie is a more closely guarded secret than the local municipality’s finances. Even more so is the design of this legendary bakkie that has left its mark on South African soil. Until the launch, Hilux fans will have

to live on the history and legend that is the birthday edition Hilux Legend 45 package. This is not a bad thing, considering just how admired this ever popular workhorse still is today. The package mainly includes aesthetical changes. Tweaks include partially blacked-out headlights, smoked tail

lights, a stainless steel front nudgebar, a stainless steel rear stop bumper, a tow bar, black side-steps, “Legend 45” badging (on the nudge-bar, front doors and tailgate), colour-coded door handles, chrome side-mirror caps and tasteful 17-inch anthracite alloys. A tonneau cover and rear styling bar (ba-

sically a faux roll-bar), meanwhile, are available as a cost option. On the inside, the Legend 45 models got a black leather trim for the seats, door panels and steering wheel, with matching dashboard finish. Toyota has even installed a reverse camera fitted to all Xtra cab and double cab versions. Engine options available in the range include the proven 3-litre D-4D turbo diesel that delivers 120kW and 343Nm. The other diesel option, in double cabs only, is a 106kW/343Nm 2.5-litre D-4D. A petrol fan? Choose between the 118kW/241Nm 2.7-litre unit (SC, DC) and the mighty 175kW/376Nm 4-litre V6 (DC only).

Mazda have no plans for leaving town For so long in South Africa, one of the most notable partnerships has been that of Ford and Mazda, and it is hard to remember a time when they were not together. Unfortunately these two corporations parted ways last year, leaving the burning question; “where will I buy my new Mazda?” Because some confusion existed after Mazda and Ford split in 2013, Mazda announced their commencement of operations as a new national sales and service company in South Africa earlier in 2014. Basically that implies that Mazda is now independent from Ford. For residents of Louis Trichardt it means that they can still buy their new Mazda locally. The new Mazda products will be available at Bridge Auto, located at 4 Rissik Street, where they are proud to sell a product that won the Japan Car of the Year award. In addition, the Mazda 2, which is soon to be launched in South Africa, also received the Good Design Gold Award at the beginning of November. Models available for 2014 include the Mazda 2, Mazda 3, Mazda 5, Mazda 6, Mazda CX-5, Mazda MX-5 and Mazda BT-50.

Kia

Little Kia Picanto still turns heads The recently launched second generation Kia Picanto is turning the heads where ever it goes, and now also in Louis Trichardt. The touch-ups are minor, but the over-all look is pleasing with a new redesigned front bumper that houses a large “tiger nose” grille, and red bordering in the case of the range-topping EX model. Also the lower air intake is now narrower and positioned lower, separate from the smaller kidney grille above it while the

fog lamps and their housings are large. As before, Kia offers two models in the form of a base 1-litre LX, fitted with a 51kW/94Nm 999cc CVVT three-cylinder motor and a 1.2 EX that provides a useful performance advantage with its 65kW/120Nm 2-litre CVVT four-cylinder unit. Both can be mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox. Both versions are fitted with an aircon, central

locking, front electric windows, a CD/MP3 audio system with USB and Aux connections and dual front air bags. Opt for the 1.2 EX and you also get 14-inch alloy wheels, audio controls on the steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity and ABS brakes. All in all the Picanto is an affordable car that does not compromises on styling, features or technology. Louis Trichardt residents can book a test drive by phoning Kia Makhado at 015 516 0405.

AMG is a beast that’s gentle on the earth

Catching a glimpse of the new Kia Picanto, you just know that you have made the right decision. Kia has also been awarded the 2014 Standard Bank People’s Wheels Awards’ Brand Champion Award in November, which means that Kia is still the most satisfying brand to own in South Africa. Photo: QuickPic.

Not only is the new Mercedes AMG C63 easy on the eyes, but it also offers compelling engine power with exceptionally low consumption figures, outstanding longitudinal and lateral dynamics making it a vehicle that can be driven every day. This four-door athlete is now even sportier and more attractive than ever. Under the hood lurks a 4.0-litre V8 turbocharged engine, partnered with a 7-speed transmission, which enables it to accelerate from 0 to 100km per hour in just four seconds. Delivering 430 kW of power and 800 Nm of torque, the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine ranks among the world’s most efficient series-production eight-cylinder

engines when it comes to peak output, torque and fuel consumption. The CLS 63 AMG S-Model with 430 kW comes in at 9.9 litres per 100 km (claimed). The AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed sports transmission is ideal for the powerful V8 biturbo engine. Equipped with the four drive modes “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual), the ECO start/stop function and race start, the power transmission offers the ultimate in variability and tailor-made dynamism. In addition, the swooshy new design, easily recognizable by the twin blade radiator grille and three bimensal A-wing airducting element, brings to life the extraordinary technology in the

CLS 63 AMG, consummately tailored to discerning customers who appreciate unmatched performance. Inside, the dashboard is finished in black Artico man-made leather, with stitching in crystal grey, the wing-like trim element in aluminium and the AMG-exclusive, IWC-design analogue clock (depending on equipment choice). The Mercedes-AMG C63 and the facelifted CLS 63 AMG S-model will be available for ordering effective in the February 2015 production term. Locals can keep track of the latest prices and updates by contacting Mercurius Motors Polokwane at 015 299 9500.

Millions for Siloam

The Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, has said that a new Siloam Hospital will be constructed at about R750 million. During a recent visit to King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana at Dzanani, Motswoaledi stated that the new hospital will include, among the normal hospital features, a drug-resistant outpatients ward, as well as a mortuary. During the visit, Motswoaledi expressed shock at the dilapidated state of the present hospital. He added that the new hospital will provide a conducive working environment for nurses and doctors to do their jobs efficiently and to provide quality health care to the patients. The construction of the building will also provide jobs for local people and stimulate the economy, he said. “The new hospital will have a new management, enough beds and doctors,” Motsoaledi said and mentioned that it would not be fair just to renovate the hospital. It will be better to build a new one and demolish the old building, he added. He also mentioned that the hospital is too small to provide sufficient service to the community. When it was initially built, it was meant solely for the small community around Nzhelele, but nowadays it caters for large volumes of patients. King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana expressed his joy with Motsoaledi’s announcement. “We are overjoyed about the fact that our problem of travelling long distances to access service at other hospitals will be a thing of the past.” Kerknuus

Klasse sal aangebied word by Shammah in Rissikstraat 52.

N

á aanleiding van die voorbladartikel “We will fight!” in verlede week se Zoutpansberger: Ek haal graag Louis Trichardt se burgemeester, mnr. David Mutavhatsindi, aan: “The setting aside of the name Makhado… we’re not happy … Because people had spoken in terms of that name, and records are there … They are there even as I speak today.” As Burgemeester behoort u tog ‘n voorbeeld te wees. “want the street names to be changed … “,”… people who enjoy going for protest marches and marching on the streets demanding services.” ”There is a consistent effort … to undermine the democracy we have earned through the blood of other people…” Met ander woorde, mnr. Mutavhatsindi, as ek u reg verstaan, was

“we have people in this town … against transformation”.

Mayor’s remarks were influenced by anger and frustration - COPE

W

e welcomed the statement of the Minister of Arts and Culture to concede that the name of Makhado Town must remain Louis Trichardt. From the onset the process of consultation was flawed. We support the name change only if it is done democratically and all guidelines are followed to the latter. After this setback, we need a cooloff period to come to our senses before we embark on any other processes. In the course of addressing the Council, the mayor announced the committee to start the process of

renaming the town streets, based on the previous councils resolutions, of which the resolution has lapsed since whoever was the mayor failed to implement it. The Council first needs to develop a policy, with all inputs from the affected stakeholders. As COPE, we don’t support the mayor‘s action, as it is influenced by anger and frustration and it is partisan. COPE will engage the COGHSTA MEC to intervene. - Councillor Edward Malima, COPE (Louis Trichardt)

“Julle bydraes het ‘n verskil gemaak”

E

Sonder

“Laat dit aan my oor, Daisy.

structures for these routes and its route management programme builds the management capacity of the association’s members while enabling them to implement local development projects through what is known as a Challenge Fund. The interns along the Seraki Blouberg Route identified the hiking trail, camp and village tours as opportunities for the community to be involved in tourism while also helping to improve the potential of the area as a tourism destination. The business plan for the project was drawn up with assistance from Open Africa and will eventually be implemented with the funds provided from the route’s challenge fund. Currently, the camp at the foot of the Blouberg mountain is being managed by Transfrontier Parks Destinations (TFPD), who works towards creating a viable and sustainable tourism industry that balances the needs of the local community with the surrounding natural environment. Three of the young business-minded interns currently work as guides and take visitors around the mountaintop. A guided tour to the local BaHananwa village is also on offer, adding a cultural flavour to any traveller’s experience in the Blouberg. The trails are also suitable for mountain-bike enthusiasts. The hiking trail is set to open to the public in early 2015. For more information on the trails and booking information, please contact Transfrontier Parks Destinations on 021 701 7860 or info@tfpd. co.za (Claire Allison is the marketing manager of Open Africa, a social enterprise that establishes tourism routes that offer travellers authentic experiences while generating income for local businesses in rural Africa. www.openafrica.org).

Unique techniques in Nonny’s paintings Well-known Zimbabwean artist Nonny Mathe employs different media and techniques, such as batik and acrylic paint, on textile and canvas. The maize flour resin she uses to create a cracked effect gives her work striking layers of texture and depth. Her paintings are mainly abstract and semi-abstract, with moving figures captured in bold, rich colours. Nonny facilitates workshops for art students in Zimbabwe and did a five-day training course for local artists and crafters at Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge outside Louis Trichardt during the first week of November this year, teaching various batik-like techniques, knot-and-dye, acrylic paint and textile printing methods. “Women always figured strongly in my paintings. I recently realized that there is actually a shortage of men in Zimbabwe; in fact, I mainly see groups of women everywhere.” One of her recent paintings is called Men shortage. Thinking aloud, she says smiling: “Maybe I will call my next painting, Where are all the men?”

Nonny’s previous exhibitions and awards include a solo exhibition at the National Gallery in Bulawayo in 2012 and group exhibitions in Bulawayo, Harare, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique and Denmark. She won the Best Piece merit award at the 1996 Longman Heritage Exhibition in Harare and Best Female Artist award of the Visual Art Association of Bulawayo in 2011. Nonny is a resident artist at the national gallery in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Her exhibition will be on display at Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge, 10km west of Louis Trichardt on the Vivo/R522 road. The exhibition will run from 1 December until end of January 2015 and will be open for viewing from 09:00 to 16:00 daily. If not staying at the lodge, please call Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge at 015 516 0220 or 083 342 4162 to arrange viewing. “Some of the best and most popular kinds of works of various crafters and artists of northern Limpopo will be selected for a major CraftArt exhibition planned at Madi a Thavha in May next year,” says Marcelle Bosch, co-owner of the lodge.
