Chris se suster, Mavis Groenewald, sê dat Chris altyd vol lewe was. “Hy het alles beproef en net die goeie behou,” sê sy. Sy voeg met ‘n glimlag by dat hy by tye ook maar lekker stout kon wees. Chris was ‘n aktiewe lid van die Louis Trichardt Rolbalklub en sy teenwoordigheid daar sal beslis gemis word. Hy het vir baie jare in die dorp en omgewing gewerk. Volgens Mavis was Chris die laaste paar maande in baie pyn gewees en het hulle vrede gemaak met sy dood. Hy word oorleef deur sy eggenote Sharon, sy seun Stephan (6), sy ouers Carol en Ben Groenewald, en suster Mavis. Die welbekende Estelle de Waal het Maandag die nuus ontvang dat haar jongste seun, Pierre (33), die oggend in ‘n motorfietsongeluk dood is. Hy was lief vir alles wat die bloed laat klop het. Dit was die tipe mens wat hy was. Hy het absoluut voluit geleef,” het Estelle gesê. Niemand is seker wat presies gebeur het nie. Pierre het met sy fiets weggetrek, maar ‘n paar kilometer verder het sy vriende op hom afgekom waar hy van agter met ‘n voertuig gebots het. Hy is op slag dood in die ongeluk. Even though Natasha and Craig are in justifiable shock at this point, they have no intention of letting these criminals upset their lives any further. “I am so proud of Craig for fighting and saving his family,” said Natasha. “I used to give him a hard time about his short fuse,” she continued with a smile, “but now I know I will be eternally grateful for it and for his courage.” The two are immensely grateful to their families and friends, and especially their parents and sisters, who came to their aid immediately. Mainly, though, they are grateful to God for waking them and for giving Craig strength when he needed it. “You don’t think for one minute that something like this will ever happen to you,” said Natasha. “That’s why there was a window available for them to get in, even though you would never have expected an adult male to fit through the burglar bars we had in place. We will never neglect home security again. I wanted to say that if you are parents of young children, you must be especially vigilant and not leave them open to harm’s way. Honestly, whoever you are, take steps right now to make sure that your home is not an easy target.” Craig’s bravery in a situation that could have turned deadly for this young family has saved his wife and children from whatever it was the three intruders were planning to do with them once they had their cash and valuables. “I would do it again,” he said with a grin. A trio of violent home invaders got more than they bargained for when they broke into the home of Craig Viljoen in Louis Trichardt last week. At around 03:00 on Thursday, 20 September, Craig’s wife, Natasha, woke up to find three armed intruders standing by her bed. She was in the master bedroom with the couple’s one-yearold baby, while Craig was in their three-year-old son’s bedroom. One of the thugs threatened to kill Natasha if she screamed, but scream she did anyway, at the top of her voice. Roused by his terrified wife’s shouts, Craig woke up and ran to her. When he pulled open the bedroom door, it was only to come face to face with an assailant holding a knife up in the air, ready to plunge downward into his body. Acting purely on instinct, Craig grabbed the intruder’s arm and wrested the knife from him, then started punching him. At this point, the second intruder tried to save the first one by hitting Craig’s back and arms with a tyre iron. In all this pandemonium, Craig managed to grab the tyre iron as well and summarily proceeded to beat criminal number two with it. At this point, all three thieves fled out the front door, but not without one of them getting a crack on the back of the head with their own well-aimed tyre iron first. Deconstructing what happened, Craig and Natasha say that the thieves must have had a little time to themselves before the couple woke up. Prior to entering the master bedroom, they had placed items they planned to take with them close to the front door, which they had unlocked and opened after entering through an open window. His gratitude to be alive and his unfailingly positive outlook in the face of painful and frightening life challenges since the age of 15 have inspired many positive and encouraging comments from residents. Shortly after the Zoutpansberger shared Michael’s story, a friend of his, Danie Moolman, took the opportunity to share the article as well. In doing so, he drew the attention of a generous donor, who came forward with the gift of a new wheelchair. Michael’s journey with paralysis because of a long-undiscovered tumour in his spine began at the age of 15. Even then, he did not have much support and no medical aid. In the years since then, he refused to give up, no matter how much he wanted to when the inevitable “down” days came. Sometimes he has aid with the medical costs of the treatments he needs, and sometimes he does not. He just gets on with things as best he can, and somehow succeeds in being grateful and positive most of the time. When the Zoutpansberger originally interviewed him, the very obviously decrepit

and dangerous state of his wheelchair elicited wonder as to how anyone could be grateful for it. Yet Michael was grateful for that chair. “I would never have got around at all without it,” he said. “It was a blessing, albeit a sometimes-painful one.” The new wheelchair, however, has him grinning from ear to ear. Even though he is in constant pain that varies but never quite disappears, Michael says that one of the big joys of his life has been playing bowls, and this new chair has elevated that pleasure to new heights for him. His goal of walking again, even in the face of the new diagnosis of cancer, is always on his mind. “I exercise every day,” he says. “No matter how long it takes.” That might be where the problem lies. He currently does not have medical aid, and while trying to raise the funds to pay for the crucial trip to Pretoria for an MRI and the outcome of his last radiation treatment, the physiotherapy that could be lifechanging for him is not even a possibility. Michael says that he cannot thank Danie Moolman enough for his efforts in not only getting him a new chair but in finding the perfect one. “I can just picture him

test-driving them himself,” says Michael with a chuckle. Amusing as this sounds, the newspaper can confirm that this is exactly what Danie did. He let us know of his progress over the past few weeks, first in finding funding and then finding the perfect chair. “Thank you so much to both Danie and the wonderful lady, Nicolene Viljoen, who helped to pay for it. You have made such a huge difference to my life, and I will be eternally grateful,” says Michael. Danie lives in Pretoria and could thus not be present when Michael received his new chair. However, he sent this message with it: “I wish you enough of everything, Michael, so that you will never have too much pain nor too little faith or love, and that all your needs will be fulfilled. Enjoy every turn of the wheel. Local resident Frans Rootman shared his opinion and said, “This judgement entrenches our right to privacy as contemplated in Section 14 of our Constitution. I have never used cannabis, nor intend using it. However, I value my right to privacy dearly and do not want the State to infringe on said right … Despite not agreeing with the use of dagga except for medical reasons, I support the judgement, as it entrenches my constitutional right to privacy.” Other residents disagree. Some violently disagree, while others are less militant in their opinions. Anonymous says: “My point of view on the legalisation of dagga is that it should not have been. If it’s been prescribed as medication then yes, but not for general use. The reason is simple, many people start with dagga but most end up as drug addicts and without a future.” Many jokes about “social” users of cannabis have been circulating social media sites since its legalisation in South Africa, but scattered among them are some serious articles about the use of this plant. While Snoop Dog’s comment “Don’t get in Willie Nelson’s way when munchies are involved” may make people chuckle, some people are surprised to find out that some social icons that they admire have made it onto the regularly published The Marijuana Policy Project’s Top 50 Most Influential Marijuana Consumers list. While people may not be surprised to see Lady Gaga, Hugh Heffner and Whoopi Goldberg on this list, they may be very surprised to see names such as Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Al Gore and CNN’s chief medical correspondent, Dr Sanjay Gupta. A highly respected leader in the Vhembe traditional healing community, Maine Matamba Mamuremi, shared his knowledge on the current and historic role of cannabis, or mbanzhe as he calls it, in African culture. “We have welcomed the fact that the government’s ruling will now allow us to use it to help our patients, and we encourage all traditional users to use it for medicinal purposes and not for selling,” he said. Mamuremi said that mbanzhe had been used by traditional healers for centuries, in many ways. Depending on the disease or ailment, it can be smoked or ingested by patients. “We also use it in rituals,” said Mamuremi. He added that traditional healers were currently

using it for the treatment of malaria, blood poisoning, HIV Aids, asthma, depression and for helping those with certain mental illnesses as well as many other illnesses and problems. While Mamuremi is a proponent of using cannabis for medicinal, traditional ritual and spiritual practices, he does not agree with the selling of it to just anyone and urges other traditional healers never to do that. Mbanzhe is not meant for “fun” purposes, but to be used with respect. Studies following the legalising of cannabis elsewhere in the world have led to different opinions, however. The state of Colorado (USA) legalised cannabis on 6 November 2012. In the years since then they have had some changed statistics, which they attribute to that legalisation, and these statistics have formed the base of evidence by detractors of the legalisation. Doctors for Life (DFL), which is an organization of about 1500 doctors, specialists and professors of medicine from different medical faculties across South Africa and abroad, have shared their disappointment with the judgement of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. They state that it is a harmful, psychoactive drug and that scientific research points to massive ignorance of the known dangers. They feel that “What people do with Cannabis in the privacy of their homes is relevant to the whole of society”. They say that, according to the latest data, since cannabis was legalised in Colorado, cannabis-related traffic deaths increased by 151%, the annual rate of emergency department visits related to cannabis use has increased by 52%, and that cannabis-related hospitalisations increased by 148%. The current governor of Colorado recently told CNN that he was not ruling out making cannabis illegal again as a result of the continued rise of violent and property crime in the state since the legalisation of cannabis. Another Louis Trichardt resident, who is currently undergoing treatments for cancer, one of which is medical cannabis, shared with the Zoutpansberger several accounts by cancer survivors. He said many swore that their total cure and remission could only have been due to their use of medicinal cannabis, which mostly involves ingesting rather than smoking it. One patient was given no chance of survival without a double mastectomy; however, following her taking of cannabis capsules, she kept both of her breasts and is currently in complete remission. conducts ongoing scientific research into cannabis, it currently lists the substance as a drug that, with regular use, impairs cognitive development and psychomotor performance in a wide variety of tasks for up to 24 hours after use. They state that it can exacerbate schizophrenia in affected individuals, and that the prior use of cannabis is found in a high rate of suicide cases. While they admit that “studies have demonstrated the therapeutic effects of cannabinoids for nausea and vomiting in the advanced stages of diseases such as cancer and Aids”, among other ailments - including symptoms of post-traumatic-stress disorder - they also state that more research is needed on the basic neuropharmacology of THC and other cannabinoids, so that better therapeutic agents can be found. Love it or hate it, people are now free to grow and partake of cannabis in whichever way they wish to for personal use in homes anywhere in South Africa. Some are planning to enjoy the legal pleasure they feel they can now derive from smoking it. Other people believe that it may be wise to heed the advice of Maine Matamba Mamuremi and treat this ancient and mystical plant with respect, trusting our different healers, African or Western, to advise on its safest and best use.

Esther said that what made this loss so much worse for her father was that it followed so shortly after they had lost her mother earlier this year. The newspaper spoke to Lesley at the SPCA, who said that the SPCA was currently already doing outreaches every weekend to help animals and owners in need wherever they could. In light of this horrific incident over the weekend, the SPCA will now also launch a project to remove snares from the plantation area. She said that the area was rife with poachers and snares. She realises that the snares will be replaced by poachers but is requesting any help that people in the community are willing to offer to remove these snares and prevent more pets’ being killed in this barbaric manner. They will need as many people as possible and, hopefully, some “muscle” for backup when they go into these areas to clear snares. Tragically, after going missing on the hiking trails in the forestry plantations while with his owner and family on Sunday, Sharkie the bullterrier was found dead in a snare by his owner in the early hours of Monday morning. Esther Nel told the Zoutpansberger that she, her father Giel, and her sister Elzabé Stewart went hiking as they had done many times before on the trails. “There are many manmade foot trails into the forest, made by who I am not sure of,” said Nel. “My father always takes his dogs Sharkie and Patrys (a Jack Russell) with him.” She continued that this was one of Sharkie’s favourite things to do, and he would start “calling” her dad from early on Sunday mornings. “He absolutely loved it and was in heaven when we took him there, running Mr Giel Nel cuts the wire from around his beloved dog Sharkie’s neck after the bullterrier was around and sniffing, chasing after birds and so on,” killed in a poacher’s snare. Dat die Soutpansberg se boere vir niemand hoef terug te staan nie is duidelik, nadat een van hulle aangewys is as die naaswenner in die TLU SA se jaarlikse Jongboer van die Jaar kompetisie. Hierdie eer het vanjaar vir Wynand Louw te beurt geval. Louw is as naaswenner aangewys tydens die TLU SA, Agri, Mutual & Federal en Manitou se jaarlikse kongres wat op 19 September by die WNNR in Pretoria aangebied is. Fanie Havinga, voorsitter van die Soutpansberg Distrikslandbou-unie (SDLU), het gesê dat Wynand se toekenning ‘n besonderse prestasie is. Die toekenning word gemaak aan jongboere wat 35 jaar en jonger is. “Die paneel van beoordelaars word saamgestel uit onbevooroordeelde kundiges op verskeie landboukundige velde en die kandidate word volgens voorafbepaalde internasionale bestuurskriteria beoordeel. Die drie finaliste is op hulle plase deur die span beoordelaars besoek. Hulle het veral

belanggestel in elkeen se landbou-ambisie en sy boerdery mikpunte,” het Havinga in ‘n persveklaring gesê. Wynand Louw is ‘n jongman wat met makadamias en beeste in die Louis Trichardt-omgewing boer. Hy staan aan die stuur van ‘n sterk en gesonde onderneming, maar dit het nie in sy skoot geval nie en hy moes baie hard werk om dit ‘n werklikheid te maak. “Jan Louw, sy pa, het goed geweet watter potensiaal en deursettingsvermoë Wynand het en sou vandag ongelooflik trots op sy seun gewees het. Wynand is vandag ‘n suksesvolle boer wat doelgerig die landbou leerskool se trappies van onder af geklim het, sodat hy vandag aan die stuur van sy eie onderneming kan staan,” het Havinga gesê. Hy het afgesluit deur te sê dat die gemeenskap bevoorreg is om iemand soos Wynand in sy midde te hê, wat so betrokke is en soveel bydra tot sy gemeenskap. “Wynand is ‘n voorbeeld vir enige jongman, om hulle te laat glo in hulself en hul vermoë om hul droom te vervolmaak,” het Havinga gesê.

Levubu Staal wen sesaan-’n-kant toernooi Krieketnuus

Die span van Levubu Staal het Saterdag se sesaan-‘n-kant toernooi gewen wat by die Louis Trichardt Krieketklub aangebied is. Die toernooi was baie gewild en agt spanne het ingeskryf. In die finaal het Levubu Staal teen die span van Werda Toyota te staan gekom. Die beste kolwer van die dag was Dewald Joubert, met ‘n totaal van 125 lopies. Warno Smit het vier paaltjies ingeoes, wat aan hom die toekenning van Bouler van die Dag besorg het. Die prys vir die beste vangskoot van die dag het gegaan aan

Johan Meintjies, terwyl die speler wat die meeste misgevang het, Marius Meintjies was. Die klub het die volgende borge bedank wat die toernooi moontlik gemaak het: SAB Brouerye, Marine Olwage (De Cut), KCM, Kobus Barkhuizen, LTT Refrigeration, LTT Bolt & Nut, Sinewave, André Coetzee, Limpopo Melkery, Motus Isuzu & Honda LTT, Specsavers, Thompson’s Motors, Werda Toyota, Annik Engineering en Zander Volgraaff van Dunlop. Die speenvarkie wat uitgeloot is, is gewen deur Wesley Phillipson. Die klubkomitee het ook dankie gesê aan almal wat die veiling ondersteun het.

Lede van die Soutpansberg Kofukan Karateklub het op 8 September deelgeneem aan die Alle Style Verre-Noord karatekampioenskappe in Polokwane en hulself goed van hul taak gekwyt. In totaal het die klub sewe goue medaljes ingepalm. Voor, van links na regs, is die klub se sensei Andries Cloete (Levubu), sensei Tommy Janse van Rensburg, sensei Lourens Botes (Louis Trichardt) en sensei Johnathan Janse van Rensburg. In die middel is Leoni Jordaan (goud kata en brons kumité), Tayyibah Moosa (goud kata en silwer kumité), Matthew Togonidze (brons kata en goud kumité), Kailey Botes (goud kata en silwer kumité) en Zaahid Moosa (vierde kata en kumité). Verskeie van die BCVO Skool Zoutpansberg buite Louis Trichardt se landloopatlete het medaljes ingepalm tydens die BCVO se landloopkampioenskappe op 7 September in Mokopane. Voor, van links na regs, is Joshua Cronjé (brons), Anri Botes (brons) en Theané van der Linden (brons). In die middel is Kara Botes (brons), Zack Fourie (silwer), LC van der Merwe (silwer) en Handro Fourie (goud). Agter is Jani Badenhorst (goud) en Junior Smit (goud).

Laerskool Louis Trichardt se tweede seunshokkiespan het Saterdag, 22 September, in die semifinale ronde van die provinsiale skoleliga uitgeval, nadat hulle teen Duiwelskloof verloor het. Die ligawedstryd is by PHS in Polokwane beslis. Afgeneem saam met die span is hul afrigter, Stoffel du Toit.

Sy was inderdaad die tweede meisie in die toer se geskiedenis om die “resies” te wen. Tydens vanjaar se toer op 7 September het die tweede en derde plekke ook aan meisies gegaan. Louis Trichardt resident Geoff Goetsch received the trophy as the overall winner in the Limpopo Champions League Shoot on Saturday, 15 September. The Northern Defensive Pistol Club, under the leadership of Wayne Coetsee, began the annual Champions League event in 2017, which is open to all members of the International Defensive Pistols Association (IDPA) clubs countrywide. was Safari Gone Wrong and consisted of seven stages. Stage one was a typical anti-poaching scenario. Shooters had to search for illegal meat stashed in a poacher’s hideout. Targets were carefully hidden and proved tricky for competitors to find. Stage two involved high action, with the shooter exiting a vehicle to engage targets while following the course line of fire. Saving a “passed out” friend from hyenas wanting to make a meal of him was the theme of stage three, while stage four had competitors engaging with would-be robbers attacking a guest lodge.

Stage five seemed to give the shooters a little break before the final, with targets being engaged in tactical priority from a seated position only. In stage seven, shooters turned heroes by having to rescue their significant others from bad guys, but only after first catching a fish from an actual boat. The final stage comprised standard, but still not easy, target shooting. Competitors enjoyed a well-deserved rest after a day filled with action, and a braai, with the prize-giving ceremony as the final highlight of the day. Goetsch took home the trophy by placing first among 30 competitors.

Triegies het met twee doele gewen, na ‘n strafdoel-uitskiet. Hulle het na die finaal deurgedring deur Fauna Park van Phalaborwa in die semifinale ronde te klop met drie doele teenoor nul.
