Gogo (83) raped and murdered
Three men arrested By Kaizer Nengovhela
Three men briefly appeared in the Tiyani Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday in connection with the death of Gogo Mojaji Sebyene (83), of Sereni village. She was attacked and killed on the 16th and the alleged attackers were arrested last Tuesday. The case against Happy Mohale (24), Stanley Zwidofhela Mugwena (27) and Thomas Serepa (29), was postponed to today (Friday) for a formal bail application and, according to the spokesperson for the Limpopo Police, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, the case was moved from Tiyani to the Tshitale Magistrate’s Court “for logistical reasons’. According to Mulaudzi, it is alleged that the three suspects had forced their way into the gogo’s room and demanded money. She was sleeping and alone in the house when the incident took place. “They then
dragged her to nearby bushes where they allegedly raped and assaulted her,” Mulaudzi said. It is also believed that they had left her in the bushes, returned to her house and set it alight. She was later found by community members who rushed her to Elim Hospital, where she passed away. The incident came as a huge shock to her family and the community. Her granddaughter, Ms Tshifhiwa Sebyene, said that her grandmother had lived alone. “She was a much-loved person and we did not expect her to leave us in such a horrible manner,” she said. “Imagine a defenceless granny of her age being strangled and raped. We were robbed of a very loving grandmother, who made sure that we got whatever we wanted. We will never forget her and she will be sorely missed,” she said. “I have accepted her death, but I will never forgive the murderers. The murderers do not deserve to live with people, but
with wild animals in the bush,” she said. The managing director of the Munna ndi Nnyi forum, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, condemned the act of rape and said that it was unwelcome in a society where women should be respected and celebrated for their social role. “Anyone who commits such a dastardly crime is not a real man. Whoever did that ill act to the aged lady needs to be removed totally from society.” The president for Vhembe Traditional Health Practitioners, Maine Vho-Mbilivhili Neluvhola, condemned the act of rape. “The matter was brought to our attention by the community and the police,” Maine Vho-Neluvhola said. “As a community leader, I feel shocked by what happened. We can’t condone acts like these. My feeling is that there’s a lack of respect among the youth. The youth need to understand and accept that the elderly are their grandparents and not objects of sexual engagement.”

Huge reward for information on Mphaphuli murder Welcome boost for Mulamula The prevalence of ritual murders, which has returned to haunt Vhembe has prompted the residents of the area to stand up and say enough is enough. During the past fortnight, residents of Mbilwi, an area of several unsolved murders, took to the streets in protest of what they called police inefficiency and failure to apprehend suspects. One of the most burning cases is that of Nyelisani Mphaphuli (60) who was found killed with most of her body parts missing. She was killed in the cruelest way with her tongue and oesophagus cut off, eyes gouged out, skin removed from her face and several other body parts were removed. Among the demands by the Mbilwi to the police was that a reward be posted for anybody with information for compensation. The police have reacted and made a reward of R100 000 available for information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the killer or killers.
Thohoyandou police spokesperson, Major Mashudu Malelo said they have so far done all in the book to catch the perpetrators, but nothing has come out of their efforts. “People are coming forward with ‘hearsay information’, which cannot be tested in a court of law. We felt that if we could put something on the table, those who witnessed the killing could come to the fore and shed light to the killing. We hope the reward will help us to get a breakthrough in the case and people would come up with tangible evidence that could be used in a court of law,” said Malelo. He indicated that the reward was not as a result of pressure from the community. “This was part of our ongoing plans to crack this case. We made an initial request of R200 000 long before the march and R100 000 was approved.” Mbilwi civic chairperson, Mr Alson Nndanganeni said they are happy with
The message is clear. What wrong have we done to deserve this?
the idea and the reward could lure those with information to come out. He said that a speedy solution of the cases could ease the volatile situation in the village. He said they are still worried about the other cases in the village. Some of the outstanding cases are that of the murder of Portia Phaswana (21), a pupil at one of the local secondary schools. She went missing on 2 October 2009 and the community searched for her everywhere but she was nowhere to be found. After three weeks, her body was found dead in a deserted house with parts of her body missing. Surprisingly, the place where she was found was searched before and she was not there. No arrests have been made in connection with the case. The case of a woman who was attacked by thugs in May this year also angered the residents. She was fortunate to escape with her life and she managed to identify one of the attackers. The matter was reported to the police, but no arrests have been made. “We are tired as residents, how many more people should be killed before police take action, the continuous killing of innocent people without any arrest being effected is a source of much concern. The patience of our people and their dignity is being trampled on. We are treated like headless chickens and we have over time realised that people with money can get away with murder, this should come to an end before the community boils,” said Nndanganeni. Those with information could furnish it to the investigating officer and member of the Task Team W/O Pila at 082 759 5001 or Maj Mashudu Malelo at 082 468 8961. All information would be treated in the strictest confidence.
Tivani Mashamba-Thompson became the toast of the village of Mulamula when she initiated a project that has changed the community. The community where she was born celebrated the completion of the first phase of the multi-purpose education centre that she has started to assist the community that raised her. A fortnight ago, 16 pupils from a British school, Seven Oaks, came to celebrate with the South African rural community the completion of the first phase of the multi-millionrand project. They have completed a crèche and the the main building, which comprises a library, theatre and medical centre. The idea came when Tivani and her husband, Rowan, visited the village in 2011. “My wife realized that nothing had changed at the village after she had seen a computer for the first time when she went to university,”
said Thompson. The two decided on changing the village and sold the idea to the school. “Seven Oaks’ children raised thousands of rands from their own pockets and through fundraising to have the project done as part of their social responsibility,” said Rowan. Limpopo social development MEC Joyce Mashamba lauded the British pupils for what they have done for the community. She said her department would make sure that what they had started was self-sustaining. Tivani said the children were from wealthy families and they used their money to come to Mulamula. “They had a fundraising campaign that included a Christmas Fair during which they sold some stuff such as toys, hats and T-shirts,” she said. They also had a costume show. The chairman of the Mulamula project, Mr Jimmy Maluleke, thanked Tivani “for not forgetting her roots.”
Rowan Thompson is shown the finished first phase of the project during their visit at Mulamula.
Community leader, Thikhathali Nndanganeni signing the memorandum while Col. Ronnie van Niekerk looks on.
Xigubu dance was a hit with the visitors from the UK. Here they are seen dancing to the beat of the drums during their visit to the village.

The recent passing-out ceremony in Polokwane of 50 traffic officers from Mpumalanga, who trained at the Limpopo Traffic Training College in Mutale, has fueled the rumour that the colleague is moving to Mokopane. Unlike other passing-out ceremonies of traffic students, who had their parade at the training college at Manenu in Mutale, the students had theirs at the parking lot of the Department of Transport, Safety, Security and Liaison in Polokwane.
Sources from within the department have revealed that the department has halted plans to develop the college in Mutale. The sources say there was a budget of R25 million which was allocated to build a three-storey building that was meant to accommodate 200 traffic students. This was the second phase of the project that was estimated to cost R95 million. About R4 million has already been used to erect a palisade fence, apollo lights and a water reservoir. Another R8 million was used to build six in-

structor’s houses. More than R10 million was also used for the construction of a Grade A Vehicle Testing Station. It is also said that the drawing of the plans has already cost the department R3 million. The remaining R40 million was going to be used for the construction of an admin block, classes, a hall, a kitchen and a gymnasium. The college, which is one of 13 registered traffic training colleges with the Safety and Security Seta (Sasseta), started training traffic
students in 1997, and Kwazulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, North West, Limpopo and several SADEC countries benefitted from it. It offered traffic courses such as basic traffic officer diploma, examiner of motor vehicle, fire-arm training and examiner of driver’s licences. When Limpopo Mirror approached the department, spokesperson Mafenya Lediga was not prepared to react. “I cannot comment on the rumours. The MEC will brief the media about the college at the right time.”

Limpopo soil yields another gem activities, as well as maintaining the production environment at Venetia Mine. His success lies in his will of steel and strong work ethic. “As a young person in the new South Africa, you cannot afford to sit and wait for success to find you; you need to go out and make it happen,” says Cyril. He is quick to acknowledge a great group of mentors, leaders and support staff who got him to where he is today. “The great thing about the De Beers graduate recruitment programme is that it focuses on the whole individual and not just the professional aspect,” says Cyril. His development was shaped by professionals with expertise in practical training and an informed vision for his future. He is convinced that most graduates fail as a result of a lack of social support. “When you come from a disadvantaged background and suddenly have money in your pocket, you can easily make the wrong decisions, but I was given valuable life skills and a great platform to develop both personally and professionally,” says Cyril. As someone who has found inspiration from the leaders and professionals around him, Cyril realises that it is often difficult to find positive role models in a small-town classroom. He wants to inspire the youth to challenge their realities and make a better life for themselves. As someone who knows how crippling one’s circumstances can be, he is now a living, breathing example of what is possible with hard work, focus and a tireless dedication to following your dream. Ludwig von Maltitz, general manager at Venetia Mine, remarked: “We are incredibly proud of Cyril’s achievement. A key attribute of Cyril’s success is that he is courageous enough to teach, but more importantly, mature enough to be taught. His promotion proves that transformation of the mining industry is possible. Investing in local talent takes considerable time and resources, and it is incredibly rewarding to see capable, accomplished professionals from our own communities taking the mining industry by storm.” (Article by Tarryn Genis, senior corporate affairs officer at Venetia Mine)

His first-year scholarship fell through at the last moment and six months later, the university suggested he drop out after he failed to raise the money to pay for his bridging course in mining. By the end of a stressful second semester, Cyril returned home, overwhelmed by the knowledge that his results would not be released without payment. It was then, while he was at his lowest ebb, that he received a call from De Beers, who were sourcing local talent interested in a career in mining. At the time, the Internet was not readily accessible in Nancefield. So, a determined Cyril spent three days practicing his interview technique in front of a rusty mirror. He interviewed anyone who would speak to him about Venetia Mine and what it means to work in mining. “I poured my heart out in that interview and gave it my all,” says Cyril. Multiple-award-winning musical great Thomas Chauke says he will dish up a performance to remember at the upcoming concert at Moretele in Tswane on Sunday. He says his performance will be a way of repaying the faith of those who invited him. The man who in this year’s Samas received the award for the best traditional album has won numerous awards during his illustrious career. He even received a Living Legend Award from Mugana Lonene, which means he can no longer compete in the radio station’s competition. Speaking from his house at Salema, Chauke says that when he was invited to play he felt humbled and told himself that he had to give the best performance ever. “We practised hard, because we would like to leave a lasting impression at the show. To display our culture to such an audience is just like a dream come true.” His plays with his five wives, Joyce, Lucy, Florah, Ethel and Eva, who form the backing band, the Xinyori Sisters.

Tshaulu police fight crime through sport The station commissioner at Tshaulu police station, Lt Col Ntuwiseni Nemudzivhadi, has urged the youth to actively participate in sport as a way of keeping themselves busy in a productive way. He recently addressed more than 300 youths from the Tshaulu policing area during a
crime-awareness campaign. The campain was dubbed Youth against crime through sport. Nemudzivhadi said the youth should not underestimate the role sport could play in nation building and that it could also be a lucrative career. “Sport is a catalyst to a peace-
ful and well-groomed youth who will, in turn, be good citizens who contribute positively in the development of the country.” Well-known PSL referee Mr Phillip Tinyani also attended the campaign. A soccer game between the teams of Sector 1 and 2 was played during the event.

R150 million for new infrastructure at Vhembe FET The new chief executive officer of the Vhembe FET, Mr Frans Ramonyatse, said the college had set aside R150 million for infrastructural development. He was speaking during the college’s recent diploma and certificate ceremony. More than 700 students received certificates and diplomas during the cereomy held at Christ Worship House Church in Shayandima. The ceremony, which was witnessed by many students and guests from around Vhembe, saw many hardworking students going home with different prizes such as laptops, iPads and trophies. Ramonyatse said the ceremony was meant to acknowledge the hard work and dedication by the students towards shaping their future. “As an
institution, we are here to give them support through quality teaching. We are determined to teach the students the necessary skills that will assist them in creating jobs for themselves and others and also to contribute to the mainstream economy of the country,” he said. One of the recipients, Nthangeni Rathogwa, became the toast of the ceremony and warmed her mother’s heart when she was named the Best of the Best student for her outstanding achievements. Rathogwa (26) of Fondwe in Nzhelele, who received a diploma in marketing, said she would continue studying for a marketing degree with Unisa. “The diploma I got today is just a stepping stone towards a brighter future and with the skills I Nthangeni Rathogwa and her proud mother, acquired here, I will be of service to Thizwilondi, celebrate her successes after the ceremony. my community,” he said.

Plain Truth The quest for morality
Save our marriage campaign In our reflection last week, it became clear that the institution of marriage is under serious threat. Attacks on marriage and family are coming from all over, but we can’t fold our arms and do nothing about it. We as a society need to rise to the challenge. We need to mobilise couples, churches, civic structures, political organisations and non-governmental organisations with an interest in saving marriages, among others, to run this campaign. The campaign, in my mind, is not about saving marriages in terms of helping couples to stay married. We need to think more of promoting and sustaining healthy marriages. I am saying this because of persons who stay married in the eyes of people whilst having divorced years back. These are people who continue sharing the same house and the same bedroom but are no longer engaging in sex for instance. They remain in marriages of convenience – some remain for the sake of money whilst others remain for the sake of children. Others are staying together, but are spiritually connected with persons other than their husbands and wives. Think of a person who is hooked by the social media to the point of having an extra-marital affair(s) online through Facebook. He or she might not be physically
engaging the other person, but spiritual infidelity in this instance has caused lots of harm. You become more interested in the person you are hooked up with on Facebook than your wife or husband. Healthy marriages are what our society needs, not just people staying together out of convenience. Our campaign therefore entails not only highlighting and dealing with small foxes that seek to destroy our marriages but also ensuring that we come up with programmes that will nourish our marriages to be healthy. Churches and other organisations in our society should start such programmes as marriage enrichment seminars, conferences, workshops and so on. Pastors should also be encouraged to provide counselling for free as part of their community work. The success of this campaign lies in taking back marriage to the founder. God is the founder, healer and perfector of our marriages. He is the Alpha and Omega of our marriages and therefore all the programmes should not leave God out of what we do. “Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labour in vain” (Psalm 127:1a). If we can all rise up to the challenge, we can all save lots of marriages. - Prof Derrick Mashau, (mashatd@unisa.ac.za)

Shanzha community celebrates Women’s Month “I can't believe it! I walked for eight kilometres and after that I felt so much energy in my body as if I were a 16-year-old youth!” Those were the words of an excited Ms Christinah Siaga (77) after participating in a recent fun walk, which was held as part of the Women's Month celebration at Shanzha-Thaweni, in Nzhelele. Shanzha-Thaweni's chairperson, Mr Munnic Munyai, said that the community had decided to include elderly males in the women's month fun walk after they realised that all those males were strong men who respected and supported the women.
“We are celebrating this month as a way of showing respect to our mothers, wives and sisters,” Munyai said. He added that the event would be held annually. Vhavenda Vho-Bethuel Shavhani said that an event of this nature also promoted social cohesion among the residents. “Everyone of us must get involved in the cause of promoting women's rights,” he said. An official at the Vhembe Phadzima mobile clinic, Mr Thikhali Nemangaya, addressed the elderly on a healthy lifestyle. He told them about the benefits of exercising and encouraged them to always engage

Donation for Mamathieledzha Learning and teaching at Mamathieledzha Primary School outside Thohoyandou will change for the better, following the donation of a fridge, microwave oven, water coolers and kitchen shelves by Nedbank’s Mvusuludzo Mall branch. The donation amounts to more than R12 000 and the handing over took place at the bank’s offices in Thohoyandou on Monday. “We realised the bad conditions and learning difficulties at the school when we recently visited the school. It is a disadvantaged school with no clean water or computers and the staff room is falling apart,” said Mr Sammy Munyai, the bank manager.
According to him, his company was worried about the situation at the school and hoped that the water coolers will help the pupils to get clean water. “We also gave uniforms and shoes to some of the disadvantaged pupils,” he added. The principal, Mr Mmbangiseni Nengwenani, said he was thankful for the donation and hoped that learning and teaching would improve at the school. “I feel pleased for my school to get help, after it was identified as one of the most disadvantaged schools. I urge other companies around here to do what Nedbank was doing to uplift the standard of rural communities,” said Nengwenani.

R100 000 reward for Piet Pale’s killer
Rhino poaching highlighted at seminar
The SAPS Limpopo is offering a reward of R100 000 to anyone who can assist them in the arrest and successful conviction of the killers of community leader Mr Madimetja Piet Pale. Pale was gunned down, in what seemed to be an assassination, on 28 June, less than 500m from his home in Mahwelereng. According to the Mogalakwena Residents Association (MRA), Pale left his house after receiving a phone call. He was in his car when an unknown suspect approached and shot him repeatedly through the window of his car. He apparently tried to flee but, having sustained several wounds, he lost control over his car, which overturned only 400m from where he was shot. He died on the scene. In a special press release, the MRA spokesman, Thintha Mokhonoana, said that the MRA welcomed the reward by the Limpopo SAPS as well as the establishment of a special task team by the provincial commissioner. “We have always been clear that this was a political assassination by those who are implicated in corrupt activities in [the] Mogalakwena Municipality because our chairperson was leading our movement in order to uncover corrupt activities at the time of his death.” The MRA press release also urges the provincial chairman of the ANC in Limpopo, Premier

In Memoriam
A tribute to one of the Soutpansberg’s stalwarts Last month, the region said their final farewell to one of the stalwarts of the Soutpansberg, Mr Poog Henning, when he passed away aged 77 on 21 July. The following was sent in by his family to pay tribute to a man who has meant so much to so many of the region’s people: Poog was born Arthur Smith Henning on 14 February 1937 at Elim Hospital and was immediately nicknamed “Poog” by his brother John, a nickname that stood the test of time. Poog’s early school years were spent at Louis Trichardt Primary School where he boarded with Mrs Bergh (Denis Schnehage’s grandmother) and also with the Coxwells until 1948. At the time, there was a strong Swiss Missionary community at Elim and here he learnt to play a good game of tennis at their club. Poog also took music lessons with a certain Mrs Brunschweiller at Lemana (Elim) until 1949. He never took to horse riding as a youngster and this was not surprising as he lost half his middle toe after being trodden on by one of the farm horses.
At an early age, Poog started taking an interest in the Tsonga culture and learnt to speak the language fluently. On the farm Sweetwaters (now Mununzwu Estate) he learnt how to shoot with his pellet gun and later on with larger calibres, becoming an accomplished hunter. Throughout his life, Poog had bad luck with knee injuries, the first of which happened when he fell, in 1947, into an open manhole for the petrol valve at Northern Motors (now Clicks) where he badly damaged his knee. In 1950, Poog left for St John’s College in Johannesburg (Nash House) where he continued his music by playing a bugle in the cadet band. He used to catch the train from Bandelierkop to Johannesburg along with school friends “Lumpy” Lyall Engels, Peter Knott, Paul Thomas, Gordon Coxwell and Errol Spud Murphy (Musina). He also continued playing sports, including swimming, rugby and tennis. In 1955, Poog started attending Tukkies university to study dental prelim, at which he excelled. His uncle, Jan Henning, was a dentist and was hoping that he could leave his practice to Poog once he had graduated. Unfortunately, Poog’s university career was cut short because his elderly father, Oom Johannes, was now in ill health. Poog returned to Sweetwaters to look after the farming operations which were mainly seed potatoes, and he was a member of the “Klein Spelonken Seed Potato Association”. This also included the large Sweetwaters Dairy which had a depot in Louis Trichardt and a large herd of 1 000 head of cattle, which grazed on the hired farms Lovedale Park, Vleifontein, Melkhoutkopjes (Theo Menne) and the Lavin farm (now Ben Lavin). Poog was an active member of the Bonsmara Breeders association and was a very enthusiastic cattleman. Here het met many of his friends in the district who The late Mr Poog Henning (77). Photo supplied. shared his love for cattle. Poog
also farmed with tobacco, wheat, cotton, pumpkins and onions on the family farm Tuscanan, located near Pontdrift on the Botswana border. In 1961, Poog was married to Jean Maureen Mackinnon. They had four children (Carl 1964, Rocco 1966, Sanchia 1968 and Nicola 1970). Sanchia died tragically in a car accident in 1988. In 1965, Poog started planting avos and also granadillas. As a result of a number of hail storms, the potatoes were eventually phased out and granadillas planted in their place. Macadamias were added in 1972 and Poog was among the first to do so in the district. He was very active in the farming community and was one of the founder members of the South African Avocado Growers Association (SAAGA). He later also served as chairman of the association. In 1980, Sweetwaters was expropriated by the government for the relocation of Kutama and Sinthumule, whose residents refused to move. The farm was incorporated into Venda. Poog continued farming as the estate manager until 2003, when he founded the company Mununzwu Newco. Shortly thereafter, his son Carl joined him and they grew their business to include Ngome Estate in Vryheid, KZN (old Sapekoe tea estate), and also Multispray, with branches in Johannesburg and Cape Town, which supplies spraying equipment to the farming community. As an adult, Poog always belonged to service organisations in the district which were mainly directed at those people less fortunate: * He was an active member and chairman of the Round Table; * Joined Rotary in 1982 and became president in 1985; * Was director of Rivoni Care for the Blind (Elim) and helped to start several projects; * After Carl came back from Johannesburg to farm in 2004, Poog became involved in a housing project and built 168 houses for his workers. * Poog was an honorary member of the Lemba Cultural Association, whom he gave permission
to hold their annual meetings on Sweetwaters in 1956. He was very interested in the Lemba heritage and was always proud of his contribution to them. He advised them not to try for a homeland, but to have a cultural centre and offered for them to have their meetings on the farm. To this day, the Lembas still hold their AGM in September on Sweetwaters (Mununzwu Estate). * Poog built the Mununzwu Elim Crèche in 2008; * He was a lifelong patron of Hlanganani Care for the Aged (Mrs Florence Khosa) and Rotary often partnered with Hlanganani on projects; Poog often represented Rotary there. * He was deeply involved in the Elim community and was well respected for his advice and integrity on many matters; and * he held education most dear, and there were many students whom he sponsored to better themselves. Poog loved to write a diary and wrote an A4 page every day of whom he saw, what happened on the farm and even noted events that touched his friends. He loved helping his staff and there were many children which he helped put through school, and some even through teacher training college. Poog was fiercely loyal towards his family and loved his grandchildren dearly. His eldest granddaughter, Rebecca, learnt only hours after his passing that she had been accepted to Onderstepoort in 2015 to carry on with a degree in veterinary service. Poog had a lovely sense of humour and always had the biggest smile when he saw you. He had the very rare gift of getting the best out of people and this is what always attracted people to him. He always had time to talk to the stream of visitors who came to his office. Poog was buried on Sweetwaters at the Henning Graveyard after a moving ceremony held by Prof Koos van Rooy, which included all the workers and many friends and acquaintances from Elim and surrounding areas. May he rest in peace.

Local contractors receive recognition for quality work
At the tender age of 15, a young and ambitious learner, Matamela Netshandama of Mukula-Mukondeni outside Thohoyandou, is making a triumphant entry into the competitive world of modelling. In 2010, she won the Miss Goldville Mission School title and last year she was in the Top 10 of the Miss New Generation pageant. She then rectified her mistakes and prepared thoroughly for this year’s competition. It came as no surprise to her when she was crowned queen in the Miss New Generation 2014 competition at the weekend. Matamela has made her parents, mother Tshifhiwa Marole and father Thinandavha Netshandama, very proud. “She is an amazing girl who knows what she wants in life. We do not have to tell her it is time to study as she has her own timetable and sticks to it. She is doing very well at school and that is the reason we are also supporting her in her chosen career of modelling,” said her proud mother. Matamela has her eyes set on winning the Miss Universe title one day.

Raphunga leaves healthy legacy at school Residents from different villages in Nzhelele whose children attend school at Mungomani Primary School at Tshiswenda village flocked to the school to bid the principal a fitting farewell on Friday. Representatives from the Department of Education, friends, colleagues and pupils described the outgoing principal, Mr David Raphunga, as a father among fathers and a true friend for all time. “He didn’t rule this school with an iron fist,” said Ms Grace
Mugovheli, a teacher. “He was more than a colleague and we will miss his presence. He leaves us a healthy legacy of academic success, unity and love for one another in the school.”According to the school’s representative, Ms Nyadzawela Godzwana, Raphunga arrived at the school in 1993. At that time, there were only six teachers, six classrooms and 249 pupils. Today, the school has 15 classrooms, 24 teachers and 773 pupils.
“During my tenure as principal, I worked harder and it became my joy when I witnessed several teachers winning teaching awards,” he said. “The learners also brought joy to my heart all the time, when they excelled academically something that also showed that the teachers were doing their work. Now I have put the baton down; whoever takes it, must surely continue with the good work of scoring more success stories for this school.”
In the picture are (from left to right) Ms Grace Mugovheli, Mr David Raphunga, Mrs Fungisani Raphunga, Ms Nyadzawela Godzwana and Mr Stephen Ramalebana.

The event was held at the student cafeteria on Friday and was also attended by different stakeholders, such as TVEP and Lovelife. By Elmon Tshikhudo artists. This is fast killing music and bringing local Tshivenda music into disrepute,” he added. He said he had kept quiet for far too long, but he was now worried that even some of his music was being stolen and used by local artists without his approval. “I have been here for quite some time. I have released good music which I took to local radio stations, but they are not playing the music. I am just surprised to hear some of my music being played under other people’s names, which makes me bitter because they do not have my permission to do so,” he said. He said there were some creative artists who were helping in the development of local music. “My music is original. I compose my music, but there are some guys who just wait
for the right time and steal other people’s music and pretend it’s theirs. Even engineers are losing quite a lot of money as artists just come with instrumentals ready and only pay for studio time to do the vocals.” Bamba, one of the most popular local musicians, confirmed that downloading is the norm in the music industry. “There are protocols to be followed when downloading instrumentals that belong to other artists, but we do not encourage it as it decreases one’s creativity,” he said.

DOWNLOADING Top-flight Zimbabwean-born musician Lloyd Muradzihwa has come out with guns blazing, blaming local artists for a lack of creativity and labelling them as copycats. Muradzihwa, who is known as the Mysterious Lloyd in music circles and who has played and composed music for many local big names, is accusing local artists of stealing music through downloading. He said the trend was fast killing music and there was no longer creativity in the music industry. “Back in my home country, artists are very serious about producing original music. That is what is making our music grow and acceptable even in overseas countries - its orinality. Here it is a different story altogether, where most artists have resorted to downloading instrumentals from overseas

Hair salon owner-cum-gospel singer Norman Rammbuda, who started singing at an early age, is fast realizing his dream of being a big gospel star. Rammbuda (31), of Makwarela Extension 3, always wanted to see himself as one of the country’s top gospel artists. After years of labour and having had a good foundation at a village choir, the Phalaphala Boy’s Choir, Rammbuda caught the eye of ace producer Confidence Dzivhani of Convee Music in Thohoyandou. Their meeting resulted in the production of a monster gospel album, Ndi Funa Yesu. Since its release at the beginning of this month, the album has become the talk of the town and is being played everywhere. “I am no newcomer in this industry. I accumulated vast experience through singing in choirs and worship teams at places like the Family Worship Centre at Mbaleni, where I congregate. Unlike others who have had challenges in starting their own musical careers, mine was a different story altogether,” he said.
He said his musical skills attracted his present producer, who encouraged him to record one song. “After the recording, people were crazy about the song. Many encouraged me to record a full album and this resulted in the recording of this album,” he said. He said he did not have any problems as he had already prepared material for the album, which was finally released early July. All his songs are educational, with messages that could help the listerner grow spiritually. Songs like Ndi Funa Yesu and Tshithavhelo are, according to him, the best on the album. “My plans include taking my career to another level where I can compete with the best in the country. If others have made it, what could prevent me from attaining my dreams?” added Rammbuda. His music is self-marketed but plans are afoot to have it marketed nationally through major music retailers. Those having difficulties in getting Rambuda’s debut album can phone him on 076 283 8508.

of 13 urgently need a shelter “Rising political star” - killed in accident Family A family of 13 members at to understand the reason why all through the roof. At one stage, As women the country over are celebrating Women’s Month, the Magadani family of Tshisahulu and the ANCYL in Limpopo have been plunged into mourning. This follows the death of one of the province’s rising political stars, Masindi Magadani. Magadani (26) was a leader of the ANCYL and also a member of the Provincial Task Team. She was killed in a vehicle accident on Sunday afternoon. According to reports, her vehicle was hit from behind and she lost control, her vehicle overturned and she was thrown from the car. The accident happened between Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and Polokwane. She died at the scene of the accident. Soon after news of her death was made known, tributes started pouring in. One of the first groups to visit the family was the ANCYL Limpopo Task Team. A family member, Chief Norman Makumbane, also arrived to support the family. Grieving family members said her death came as a big shock. Her sister, Mashudu, said Masindi came back on Friday as they were having a family function at the weekend. “We had a good time with her and she was in good spirits and in a joking mood as usual.” “We are so saddened by her sudden death. It seemed as she had a premonition about her death. During our gathering, she greeted all family members one by one, as if she was just saying goodbye. We will remember her for her jokes, and she was always happy and full of love for her people. She was a unifier of the whole family and we will miss her dearly,” said Mashudu. At the time of going to press, no details of funeral arrangements were available.
Mashau-Thenga, near Elim, continues to live in an unstable, thatched-roof hut, even after many attempts to have the government build them an RDP house. Ms Martha Maano (55) said that she first registered for an RDP around 2004, but her application was unsuccessful. No reasons were given why her name was not approved for a house while a lot of other people, even those who had proper houses, got RDP houses, she said. She tried to submit her name again at least twice when the ward committee visited her at home. “I am unemployed, or else I would have built myself a proper house a long time ago,” she said. The five adults and eight children, who are Maano’s children and grandchildren, share living and sleeping conditions in the mud hut with no proper floor. Maano hasn’t qualified for a government grant for the aged yet. According to Maano’s daughter, Ms Dolance Musitha (27), who also lives with her, she fails
services should bypass them in the village. “Even when we submit our names for the hunger relief programme, they do not give us food,” she worried. “But we see even people who are employed getting food while our name had been removed from the list. Maybe we have wronged those who compile the name lists and now they are taking revenge by rubbing off our name each time we need help.” Musitha said that the municipality must provide them with a temporary shelter while they are still considering whether or not to build them a house. When Limpopo Mirror visited the family last week, Dolance grabbed the journalist by the hand and led him into the hut. “See our poverty,” she pointed at a tattered sponge matress on the floor. “We are suffering.” The thatch on the rafters is flimsy, so that it is possible to see the sun and the sky from inside the hut. During rainy seasons, the hut is filled with water which enters
the water damaged the main electricity box and it had to be replaced. “Now we fear that if the rains come again and find us still living in this hut, the electricity box may burst and kill all of us in the fire.” The DA’s chairperson for Ward 9, Mr Jonas Mugovhani, visited the family, spoke with them and made a report which he will submit to the municipality. “This family needs urgent help from the side of the municipality,” Mugovhani said. “If the municipality fails to act accordingly, I will submit the report to DA’s provincial office, who will see that this matter is addressed with higher authorities. This family should have received an RDP house a long time ago – their poverty is so apparent that every hardworking, caring ward councillor must see it.” The spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, was sent an email for comment last week Wednesday. However, he had not responded yet at the time of going to press.

Baroka FC on song Last weekend marked the start of the National First Division (NFD) activities for the new season. Three matches were played last Friday evening, while the remaining five were played throughout the country on Saturday afternoon. One of the two Limpopo-based sides, Baroka FC, started the new season on a high note. They beat Royal Eagles 1-0 at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban on Friday evening. It took Baroka nine minutes to score the goal that earned them three vital points. Steven Serakalala tapped in a loose ball after a scramble within the box. The newly promoted Cape Town All Stars shared the spoils with Garankuwa United at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. Milano United, who missed promotion by a whisker last season, were too strong for African Warriors, whom they beat 3-1 in Cape Town. As if they were going to bury United alive, African Warriors scored their solitary goal four minutes into the game. Milano’s goals came in the last 20 minutes of the game. Maluti FET College could not absorb the pressure from Vasco da Gama and lost 0-1 at the Charles Mopedi Stadium. Highlandspark played to a goalless draw with Jomo Cosmos at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa. The draw was as good as a victory for Highlandspark as they are the rookies in the NFD. Thanda Royal Zulu played to a 1-1 draw with Witbank Spurs, while FC Cape Town beat Santos 2-0. Back home, Black Leopards lost 0-1 to Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Thohoyandou Stadium.

Careers
Loans available for field guide courses The big four South African banks will now provide loans for students wanting to complete a course endorsed by the Field Guiding Association of South Africa (FAGSA). These courses provide the minimum qualifications for people aiming to pursue a career as professional safari field guides. The move is welcome news for the country’s game reserves as there is a dearth of qualified South African field guides. In a media statement, the marketing manager of Bushwise, Ms Rachel Greenwood, said they were told time and again that overseas visitors wanted South African guides, “but until now, the vast majority of applications for our courses are from
international students. Bushwise runs one of the country’s most respected guiding courses. “We hope that, with the banks now recognising field guiding as a legitimate qualification offering good prospects both here and abroad, it will encourage more South Africans to consider it as a career.” Bushwise’s 23-week FGASA training course gives candidates a Level 1 professional qualification, covering everything from first aid and advanced weapons handling to specialist birding and reptile orientation. Graduates are qualified to guide among dangerous game. It also offers an optional sixmonth work placement at one of South Africa’s leading safari
lodges or predator centres. The 23 week course costs R104 950 or R109 950 for the 50 weeks, which includes work experience. To encourage South African applications, it offers a R10 000 discount for local students who sign up six months in advance. “Access to student loans should make the courses much more accessible to local students wanting a career in the safari and hospitality sector,” says Greenwood. “It will also challenge perceptions that safari guiding is a menial job, when it can be hugely rewarding and, for many of our students, is the first step to a career in lodge and hospitality management.”

Benny’s Care’s strikers too good for Oscar Stars Benny’s Care proceeded to the next stage of the Ndivhuwo Funerals tournament after beating Makhitha Oscar Stars in a penalty shoot-out. The two teams played to a goalless draw during the regulated time at Gogobole on Sunday. The boys from Kutama threatened to score in the early minutes when Godwin
Mahuwa forced his way through the defence of Benny’s, before passing the ball to Takalani Mbekwa. His attempt missed the target by inches. The second half saw Benny’s pressing hard in search for goals, but the defence of Stars was tight. Stars later abandoned their positions and packed themselves at
the far back. In the 55th minute, Mutshidzi Nemaxwi of Benny’s fumbled at the goal finish after beating the offside trap. Benny’s played clever football in the second half, cooling the ball in the midfield and limiting the opportunities of their opponents

Man found dead in Mapungubwe Park An elephant may have been responsible for the death of an unknown Zimbabwean man in the Mapungubwe National Park the past weekend. The body of the man, in his early forties, was discovered in the park on Saturday (23rd). According to SANParks spokesperson Divhani Maremba, park
rangers discovered the body while on patrol in the western side of the park. “A Zimbabwean passport and a cellphone were discovered in his possession,” said Maremba. The man has been identified as the 46-year-old Nhlanganisani Ncube from Gwanda in Zimbabwe.
Since the discovery, a police investigation was launched to determine the identity of the man. Maremba confirmed that the deceased man might not have been alone at the time of his death, because the rangers also found numerous other human footprints in the immediate vicinity of his body.

Mayor David hands out uniforms as he celebrates Makhado Mayor David Mutavhatsindi knows what poverty is as he experienced it firsthand in his rural village of Malonga outside Vuwani. As a young village boy he knew what it felt like to go to school on an empty stomach or barefoot and in a tattered uniform in the winter chill. His mother made clay pots and sold sorghum beer in order to put a plate of food on the table for them and to take them to school to get an education. He grew up the hard way, but against all odds he rose through the ranks and succeeded in
getting a career. During his 45th birthday celebrations held at Malonga a fortnight ago, Mutavhatsindi ploughs back into the community that had moulded him and made him what he is today. He gave uniforms to 21 pupils from his former primary school, Malindini Primary School. Mutavhatsindi said when he was inaugurated as mayor, many from his village could not be part of the occasion and many felt sidelined. “The life of a politician is not an easy one as one does not have time
for friends and relatives, and sometimes it is very hard to be with one's family. I felt this was an opportune time for me to be with my family and the community which raised me." The local traditional leader, Kenneth Makhuvha, said they saw him growing up in the village and when he took up office as mayor, they thought he would forget them.“We are happy that he did not forget us. He is always with us here and he attends our meetings, and he is also part of our development here,” he said.
Western Cape were too strong for Gauteng and beat them 3-1 in the finals of the Safa national women’s U/19 competition that was played at the Makhuvha Stadium on Saturday. Municipality finally fixes old sewerage problem
The president of Safa Vhembe, Mr George Kubayi, presents a trophy to the top goal scorer, Faedieyah Simons of Western Cape. The mayor of Thulamela, Cllr Grace Mahosi, looks on.
The captain of the Western Cape, Zulfa September, receives the winners' trophy from the MEC for Sport, Ms Nandi Ndalane.
The woes of the residents of house number 1216 in Tshikota, who endured an odorous stench coming from the trench of sewage flowing near their home, had finally come to an end. The elderly Ms Sophie Ndou and her family suffered the hazardous trench of streaming sewage situated near their house while both the Makhado and Vhembe District municipalities failed to act and address the problem. “Our children can now play outdoors freely and safely,” Ndou said. “We don’t have to worry about their safety anymore, because the safety hazard has been removed.” Ndou said that they would also like to thank the district municipality for fixing the problematic sewerage system. “Our municipality should understand that, even when we approached the newspapers to write all those stories depicting the municipality’s failure to help us, we were not meaninglessly fighting them,” she said. “We want our municipalities to understand that we want services on our doorsteps. Why must we first suffer for more than two years before we could get our cries heard?” Each time the Limpopo Mirror had phoned the spokesperson for Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, he would promise that the sewage problem would be attended to, including the open trench which the Makhado Municipality had dug from the sewerage mainline to divert the seemingly uncontrollable overflow of sewage onto the open, bushy ground. But one empty promise followed
another without any helpful action being taken. However, the media liaison officer in the district municipality, Mr Moses Shibambu, came to Limpopo Mirror’s offices and requested the journalist to accompany him to Tshikota on 3 June this year. “I want to see what is actually happening, so that the affected residents can get necessary help from the municipality’s side,” Shibambu had said. Once at Tshikota, he took some pictures of the odorous trench from a distance. True to Shibambu’s word, the sewage problem had been fixed some six weeks ago, said Ndou. The trench had been covered up, too. “Now we believe that this problem will not be resurfacing again,” Ndou said. Limpopo Mirror visited Tshikota over the weekend and found three children playing near the spot where Ms Sophie Ndou says she is happy after the the sewage trench used to be. “Ro municipality finally fixed her two-year-old takala ngauri makaka o bvisiwa (We sewerage problem. are glad that the faeces has been removed),” said Caron Ndou (8). “My friend had nearly fallen into the trench of faeces when we played here. But now it’s safe for us to play Three children are playing near the spot where the sewage trench used to be. here.”

Will Cosmos pay for Leopard’s defeat? It remains to be seen whether Jomo Cosmos will pay for the 0-1 defeat which Black Leopards suffered at the hands of Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday when they meet in their NFD encounter at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa on Sunday afternoon. While Leopards will go for the kill, Cosmos must win the match for their fans, who left the same stadium with sore hearts last Saturday after their home
team played to a goalless draw with Highlandspark. Leopards’ overlapping right back, Marks Munyai, is likely to be in the starting line-up on Sunday after watching last Saturday’s game against Golden Arrows from the grandstand. Munyai’s combination with DR Congo international Dunga Munganga at the far back has always given the team’s defence a good shape. This evening’s NFD fixtures are: Santos vs Maluti FET Col-
lege (Athlone Stadium Cape Town) and Garankuwa United vs Highlandspark (Pilditch Stadium Pretoria). Tomorrow's fixtures are Lamontville Golden Arrows vs Milano United, African Warriors vs FC Cape Town and Baroka FC vs Thanda Royal Zulu at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. The other matches on Sunday are Witbank Spurs vs Cape Town All Stars, while Vasco da Gama will host Royal Eagles.

Maweja Takers enhanced their chances of playing in the final of the Amos Charity Cup Soccer Tournament by beating Tshakhumanandilani FC 2-1 at the packed Mulangaphuma Stadium on Sunday. Tshakhumanandilani committed suicide by playing aerial balls from behind while it was clear that their opponents had a height advantage.

Killer Nedzamba steers Tshiozwi Anchors to 2-1 victory Aluwani "Killer" Nedzamba steered his team, Tshiozwi Anchors, to victory when they beat Gogobole Home Defenders 2-1 in the Ndivhuwo Funerals tournament at Gogobole on Sunday. Both sides played attacking football in the first half, making the match entertaining to watch. Anchors had
their first regret in the fifth minute. Maanda Nengovhela missed a golden chance when he shot wide. Rudzani “Shikhimbi” Mulaudzi of Defenders scored the only goal of his team in the 24th minute. He unleashed a powerful header from outside the box and the keeper of Anchors, Scara Phathela, watched in disbelief as the ball hit the
back of the net. Vhutshilo Mafunisa and Gwasda Nedzamba of Anchors were booked for different infringements during the match. The visiting team brought on Zane Mulaudzi and Londy Musiamo. They changed the complexion of the match by distributing telling passes to their strikers. In the second half,
Anchors’ scored the equalizer via Aluwani Nedzamba. Realizing that their chances were slim, Defenders abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the far back. The speedy striker Aluwani “Killer” Nedzamba complete his brace and scored the winning goal in the 85th minute after beating the off side trap.
The referee, Mr Calvin Nemavhola, flashed the first yellow card in the 11th minute. Mukandangalwo Ramunana of Takers obstructed Tsepo Ndou and the Tshilamba whistleman wasted no time before flashing yellow. Takers threatened to score in the 19th minute, but their killer-striker, Décor Ramunana, shot aimlessly from the edge of the box. The keeper of Tshakhumanandilani, Ashley Mphephu, was booked before the teams adjourned for half time. He handled the ball outside the penalty area. Takers were the first to celebrate. The former Basel FC midfielder, Shonisani Rambebu, caught the keeper napping with a ground cutter after a scramble within the box. Both sides used all their substitution chances in the last half. The cleverest move of Maweja was the replacing of Mukandangalwo Ramunana with Morgan Makhuvha. Makhuvha formed a deadly combination with another substitute, Takalani Ramagalela, at the forefront. Tshakhumanandilani found the equalizer in the 69th minute. Lavhelesani Singo tried his luck from the 35-meter area with a half-volley. The keeper of Maweja Takers, Ndamulelo Thathaisa, watched helplessly as the ball went beyond his reach. Takers, who needed full points in the match in order to remain in the race to play in the final, did not stop fighting. Morgan Makhuvha scored their winning goal from a corner kick. The ball landed behind the net without any further touch. Fixtures

1-0 Victory for KK KK Revolution fought hard to earn a 1-0 victory over Tshakhuma RO United in their Amos Charity Cup Soccer Tournament at the Tshakhuma Mulangaphuma grounds on Sunday. The game started at a snail’s pace, but things turned tough over time. The referee, Mr Eric Munyai, looked relaxed in the first 20 minutes of the game and started to sweat as the game approached the halfway mark. United committed a suicidal blunder by letting their scoring machine, Lufuno “CJ” Mugodi, watch the game from the touchline. Defeat for Leopards Black Leopards enjoyed ball possession from the start of the match to the bitter end, but they finally lost their NFD League match 0-1 to Lamontville Golden Arrows at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday. Realizing that the home side were all over them, Golden Arrows decided to abandon their positions and packed themselves at back and relied on counter-attacks. Leopards’ technical staff were forced to effect an early change to their starting line-up. They replaced the injured Sanele Mkhize with Abbas Amidu three minutes into the game. upset. He hooked an aerial ball within the penalty box and released a half-volley in the ninth minute. The ball did not have enough power to beat the stranded Arrows keeper, Maximillan Mbaeva. Leopards’ dribbling wizard, Leonard Ntshangase, missed a fortune in the 24th minute. He forced his way through the defence of Arrows and lost possession next to the goal line. The hosts then strengthened their midfield by introducing Samuel Tefu with Thomas Madimba. The goal that earned Golden Arrows three important points came in the 38th minute. They were awarded a corner
kick after Leopards’ centre back, Harry Nyirenda, deflected the ball back while trying to clear. Chris Katjiukua headed home, following a breakdown in communication between Leopards’ defenders, Harry Nyirenda and Dunga Munganga. Lidoda Duvha used their last substitution chance by introducing Mongezi Bobe for Siphamandla Sangweni. The Thohoyandou outfit realized that it was not their day when a shot by their overlapping defender, Jabulani Ndebele, hit the woodwork and bounced back into the field of play in the referee’s optional time.
