Makhado Munisipaliteit erken hulle moes met ESKOM onderhandel om dorp se ligte aan te hou

Die Makhado Munisipaliteit skuld ESKOM gereeld nagenoeg R60m. ESKOM het reeds sekere munisipaliteite gedreig met kragafsnyding, maar die Makhado Munisipaliteit het inwoners egter verseker dat dit nie sal gebeur dat hulle in die donker gelaat sal word nie. Volgens Pravin Gordhan, minister van samewerkende regering, het munisipaliteite regoor die land ESKOM aan die einde van Junie meer as R10.8 miljard geskuld. Munisipaliteite in Limpopo se gesamentlike skuld aan die einde van Junie was R315m. Noord-Kaap en Mpumalanga skuld minder as Limpopo. City Power van Johannesburg alleen skuld R1.075 miljard. Volgens ‘n Eskomverslag was Limpopo se skuld aan die einde van Mei R109.6m, wanneer slegs die munisipaliteite met meer as R5m skuld in ag geneem word. Die drie grootste skuldmakers was Thabazimbi (R66.5m) Mookgophong (Naboomspruit) met R21.6m en Makhado (Louis Trichardt) met R21.5m. Die skuld het dus teen die einde van Junie bykans verdriedubbel. Dit is heeltemal in lyn met Makhado munisipale bestuurder mnr. Sakkie Mutshinyali se verduideliking dat die munisipaliteit elke drie maande ‘n skuld van om en by R60m opbou en dan ‘n toelae van die regering ontvang om dit uit te wis. “Toe ons

Munisipale woordvoerder mnr. Louis Bobodi het Dinsdag verder uitgebrei in ‘n antwoord op ‘n medianavraag deur te sê dat die munisipaliteit nie alleen in sy skuldstryd is nie. “Die munisipaliteit het ‘n stryd met ESKOM-skuld, net soos die meeste munisipaliteite in Suid-Afrika,” het Bobodi gesê. Hy het bygevoeg dat ESKOM en die Makhado Munisipaliteit se topbestuur elke maand vergader en dat hulle afbetalingsreëlings in plek het as ‘n voortgaande besigheidsprosedure en dat die nasionale tesourie bewus is van die reëlings. Bobodi het bevestig dat hulle elke drie maande ongeveer R57m betaal. Die rente op die ESKOM-skuld het die vorige belastingjaar ongeveer R817 000 beloop. Wat hierdie jaar se rente op die skuld betref, het Bobodi geantwoord dat die rente aan die raad voorgelê sal word vir kondonering “net soos enige ander rentes”. Verlede jaar het dié agterstallige rente onder vrugtelose uitgawes geressorteer in terme van die munisipale finansiële bestuurswet. Die munisipaliteit het op sy beurt skuld van R170,4m wat nie ingevorder kon word nie. Sommige inwoners het hierdie week weereens

Enjoying a night out with the critters Last week saw the opening of a very unique photo exhibition at Makhado Crossing, which highlights the beauty and the diversity of animal species living in the Soutpansberg. All the photographs in the Through the Lens exhibition have been taken by motion-sensitive cameras that are used in research projects of the Lajuma Research Centre in the Soutpansberg mountains. Apart from celebrating art and science, the exhibition also shows how important camera trapping is as a research aid. Katy Williams, who was the driving force behind the exhibition, is also one of the coordinators of the Predators and Primates Project (PPP) at Lajuma. She and her husband, Dr Sam Williams, run the research project on behalf of of Durham University. Together, they use camera data to determine the population densities, factors affecting distribution, interactions between

Ek wil net noem dat raadslede glad nie meer, soos destyds, toegelaat word om op die beoordelingskomitee te dien nie,” het die munisipale bestuurder gesê. Wat die eiendomswaardasies betref, het Gilfillan gevra waar-

Ander sake wat deur die ver gadering geopper is, is betaling vir dienste wat nie gelewer word nie, watermeters wat nie werk nie, riool, die groen gordel, oor tydwerk, die ingange van die dorp, Steven Bothasingel wat nie geteer word nie, die bestuursplan om die strate te onderhou, die gebrek aan stoptekens in die nuwe uitbreiding, rekeningprobleme en duur voorafbetaalde kragmeters.

Millions to be spent to get streets repaired By now, residents of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) might have noticed teams of road workers frantically repairing potholes, while also doing major construction work in certain streets. Makhado municipal manager Mr Sakkie Mutshinyali enlightened ratepayers on the street repairs and how he went about to instil a positive attitude in workers. “In a year’s time, I don’t want to see any potholes,” Mutshinyali said, stating that pothole repairs start from mid-town before branching out to the suburbs. Funding of around R70 million has been put aside for the
repair of streets in town in the next financial year. Four teams are currently working on repairing potholes in town. Another two teams will join them after they had finished their work in Vuwani and elsewhere. The Zoutpansberger spoke to the team leader of one of the teams repairing a large pothole at the corner of Munnik and Joubert Street. Mr Tanyani Muthambi said that his team consisted of seven EPWP (Expanded Public Works Programme) workers. “Though I have matric and some tertiary education, it is so good not to sit at home without a job. We really enjoy the work to patch potholes and repair the streets, so that the town will look neat,” said EPWP member Ms Andani Mamburu. Mamburu’s positive attitude mirrored the great improvement in attitude of many municipal workers. Mutshinyali recounted how, at first, he would go to Shoprite to catch officials doing shopping in office hours. He also employed other measures, such as disciplinary hearings. “It was not easy, especially when you have to turn around the mindset of people who were not used to working with dedication. Fortunately, the mayor supports me fully and no councillors interfere with my work [of disciplining officials]. To be honest, some of them have really changed and are now trying their best,” Mutshinyali said.

R100 000 reward for killers’ arrest The SAPS Limpopo is offering a reward of R100 000 to anyone who can assist them in the arrest and successful conviction of community leader Madimetja Piet Pale’s killers. Pale was gunned down in what seemed to be an assassination on 28 June, less than 500m from his home in Mahwelereng. According to the Mogalakwe na Residents Association, Pale
left his house after receiving a phone call. He was in his car when an unknown suspect approached and shot him repeatedly through the window of his car. Pale apparently tried to flee, but having sustained several wounds, he lost control over his car, which overturned only 400m from where he was shot. He died on the scene. No arrests have been made
and the police are appealing to anybody who has information to contact the investigating officer, Lt Col Sakkie Lourens at 082 443 8911. Information will be treated as confidential. Alternatively, people may also call the Crime Stop tip-off line at 08600 10111 or SMS Crime Line at 32211.
The Makhado Municipality proudly displayed its 2014 SALGA award for improved financial management at a media briefing on 22 August. Mayor David Mutavhatsindi said that the Makhado Municipality had received the award from the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) for the municipality in the province that had improved the most in their financial management (among 30 municipalities). “Two years ago, our political and administrative leadership announced that we would make a significant ‘disruption’ to the status quo and pledged to change it for the better. We are now starting to get acknowledgements,” Cllr Mutavhatsindi said. He referred to the fact that, unlike many other municipalities, they had spent their whole municipal infrastructure grant (MIG) and returned no money meant for service delivery to the national treasury. Instead, they qualified for increased MIG funds to the amount of R45 million, which the mayor said “will be spent effectively and efficiently”. In addition, the 2012/13 Auditor General (AG) report of the municipality showed an improvement to a qualified audit opinion after many years of disclaimers and adverse opinions. “I am sure we are not going to regress. I will be surprised if we don’t get a clean audit. We asked the AG what still needed to be done to achieve a clean audit,” the mayor said. A “clean audit” is the popular term for an unqualified audit opinion. Auditor General Kimi Makwetu said that 30 out of South Africa’s 278 municipalities had obtained clean audits for the 2012/13 financial year. No municipality achieved a clean audit in Limpopo, North West, Eastern Cape and the Free State. In the 2011/12 financial year, only 13 municipalities obtained a clean audit. Overall, there were 63 improvements, with the Makhado Municipality ranking among them. A media representative asked whether the poor financial management in the past had been deliber-
ate or due to maladministration or corruption. The mayor answered that there had been a correlation between financial woes and lack of expertise. “About ten years of disclaimers haunted us. Now we have the right people in the right positions. I have seen our CFO working until late at night. Currently, a strong, efficient external audit committee is assisting us and our internal audit committee is also doing us wonders,” Mutavhatsindi said. He added that, with the appointments two years ago of Mr Sakkie Mutshinyali as municipal manager and Ms Palesa Makhubela as chief financial officer, the situation at the municipality had greatly improved.

A tribute to one of the Soutpansberg’s stalwarts Last month, the region said their final farewell to one of the stalwarts of the Soutpansberg, Mr Poog Henning, when he passed away aged 77 on 21 July. The following was sent in by his family to pay tribute to a man who has meant so much to so many of the region’s people: Poog was born Arthur Smith Henning on 14 February 1937 at Elim Hospital and was immediately nicknamed “Poog” by his brother John, a nickname that stood the test of time. Poog’s early school years were spent at Louis Trichardt Primary School where he boarded with Mrs Bergh (Denis Schnehage’s grandmother) and also with the Coxwells until 1948. At the time, there was a strong Swiss Missionary community at Elim and here he learnt to play a good game of tennis at their club. Poog also took music lessons with a certain Mrs Brunschweiller at Lemana (Elim) until 1949. He never took to horse riding as a youngster and this was not surprising as he lost half his middle toe after being trodden on by one of the farm horses.
At an early age, Poog started taking an interest in the Tsonga culture and learnt to speak the language fluently. On the farm Sweetwaters (now Mununzwu Estate) he learnt how to shoot with his pellet gun and later on with larger calibres, becoming an accomplished hunter. Throughout his life, Poog had bad luck with knee injuries, the first of which happened when he fell, in 1947, into an open manhole for the petrol valve at Northern Motors (now Clicks) where he badly damaged his knee. In 1950, Poog left for St John’s College in Johannesburg (Nash House) where he continued his music by playing a bugle in the cadet band. He used to catch the train from Bandelierkop to Johannesburg along with school friends “Lumpy” Lyall Engels, Peter Knott, Paul Thomas, Gordon Coxwell and Errol Spud Murphy (Musina). He also continued playing sports, including swimming, rugby and tennis. In 1955, Poog started attending Tukkies university to study dental prelim, at which he excelled. His uncle, Jan Henning, was a dentist and was hoping that he could leave his practice to Poog once he had graduated. Unfortunately, Poog’s university career was cut short because his elderly father, Oom Johannes, was now in ill health. Poog returned to Sweetwaters to look after the farming operations which were mainly seed potatoes, and he was a member of the “Klein Spelonken Seed Potato Association”. This also included the large Sweetwaters Dairy which had a depot in Louis Trichardt and a large herd of 1 000 head of cattle, which grazed on the hired farms Lovedale Park, Vleifontein, Melkhoutkopjes (Theo Menne) and the Lavin farm (now Ben Lavin). also farmed with tobacco, wheat, cotton, pumpkins and onions on the family farm Tuscanan, located near Pontdrift on the Botswana border. In 1961, Poog was married to Jean Maureen Mackinnon. They had four children (Carl 1964, Rocco 1966, Sanchia 1968 and Nicola 1970). Sanchia died tragically in a car accident in 1988. In 1965, Poog started planting avos and also granadillas. As a result of a number of hail storms, the potatoes were eventually phased out and granadillas planted in their place. Macadamias were added in 1972 and Poog was among the first to do so in the district. He was very active in the farming community and was one of the founder members of the South African Avocado Growers Association (SAAGA). He later also served as chairman of the association. In 1980, Sweetwaters was expropriated by the government for the relocation of Kutama and Sinthumule, whose residents refused to move. The farm was incorporated into Venda. Poog continued farming as the estate manager until 2003, when he founded the company Mununzwu Newco. Shortly thereafter, his son Carl joined him and they grew their business to include Ngome Estate in Vryheid, KZN (old Sapekoe tea estate), and also Multispray, with branches in Johannesburg and Cape Town, which supplies spraying equipment to the farming community. As an adult, Poog always belonged to service organisation in the district which were mainly directed at those people less fortunate: * He was an active member and chairman of the Round Table; * Joined Rotary in 1982 and became president in 1985; * Was director of Rivoni Care for the Blind (Elim) and helped to start several projects; * After Carl came back from Johannesburg to farm 2004, Poog became involved in a housing project and built 168 houses for his workers. * Poog was an honorary member of the Lemba Cultural Association, whom he gave permission
to hold their annual meetings on Sweetwaters in 1956. He was very interested in the Lemba heritage and was always proud of his contribution to them. He advised them not to try for a homeland, but to have a cultural centre and offered for them to have their meetings on the farm. To this day, the Lembas still hold their AGM in September on Sweetwaters (Mununzwu Estate). * Poog built the Mununzwu Elim Crèche in 2008; * He was a lifelong patron of Hlanganani Care for the Aged (Mrs Florence Khosa) and Rotary often partnered with Hlanganani on projects; Poog often represented Rotary there. * He was deeply involved in the Elim community and was well respected for his advice and integrity on many matters; and * he held education most dear, and there were many students whom he sponsored to better themselves. Poog loved to write a diary and wrote an A4 page every day of whom he saw, what happened on the farm and even noted events that touched his friends. He loved helping his staff and there were many children which he helped put through school, and some even through teacher training college. Poog was fiercely loyal towards his family and loved his grandchildren dearly. His eldest granddaughter, Rebecca, learnt only hours after his passing that she had been accepted to Onderstepoort in 2015 to carry on with a degree in veterinary service. Poog had a lovely sense of humour and always had the biggest smile when he saw you. He had the very rare gift of getting the best out of people and this is what always attracted people to him. He always had time to talk to the stream of visitors who came to his office. Poog was buried on Sweetwaters at the Henning Graveyard after a moving ceremony held by Prof Koos van Rooy, which included all the workers and many friends and acquaintances from Elim and surrounding areas. May he rest in peace.

Gratis inenting vir diere teen hondsdolheid
Die Makhado Munisiapliteit het ‘n vierrigting-stopstraat by die Breda- en Munnikstraatkruising aangebring na jare se gereelde ongelukke daar. Deur Linda van der Westhuizen
Omstrede kruising nou vierrigting stop Die Makhado Munisipaliteit het ‘n gevaarlike kruising in ‘n vierrigting-stopstraat veran der en die munisipale bestuurder, mnr. Sakkie Mutshinyali, het die hoop uitsgepreek dat ongelukke by dié kruising sal verminder. Die vierrigting-stop is by die Breda- en Munnikstraat-krui sing aangebring. Nuwe waarskuwingslyne is ook oorgeverf in beide strate. Die munisipali teit het hierdie verandering aangebring na ‘n paar jaar se klagtes van ongelukke by hierdie kruising. Na afloop van
die jongste ongeluk op 30 Julie het DA Raadslid Brian du Plooy gesê dat hy opnuut gaan aanbeveel dat hierdie kruising in ‘n vierrigtingstop verander word. Talle bestuurders is egter gen eig om die stoptekens in Munnikstraat by die kruising bloot te ignoreer. Dit het al ernstige ongelukke veroorsaak, insluitende die ongeluk in Junie 2012 waarin me. Esther Nel veelvuldige beserings opgedoen het. In daardie stadium was daar geen waarskuwingslyne geverf nie en die AfriForum-voorsitter, mnr. Wally Schultz, het
selfs ‘n tydelike vierstopteken in die middel van die pad gaan plaas om aandag te vestig op dié gevaarlike kruising. Die waarskuwingslyne is uiteindelik geverf, maar het in minder as twee jaar weer heeltemal dof en onopsigtelik geword. In die tydjie waarin die Zout pansberger by die kruising vertoef het om foto’s van die nuwe vierrigtingstop te neem, het twee bestuurders uit Munnikstraat weer versuim om te stop. Die nuwe stoptekens in Bredastraat sal egter hopelik help om die ongelukke minder te maak.

Van Maandag, 8 September, tot Woensdag, 10 September, sal persone van 09:00 tot 16:30 gereed staan om inentings by ses punte in die dorp te doen. Die verskillende punte waar die inentings gegee sal word, is die parkeerarea naby die tennisbaan van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt; naby die park op die hoek van Rissik en Reitzstraat; Mount Fuji Motors; Safari Motors; in Eltivillas naby die taxi-staanplek; en in Makhado Park. Die Lugmagbasis Makhado sal op Donderdag, 11 September, aan die beurt kom. “Die doel van die veldtog is om te voorkom dat hondsdolheid by honde en katte na mense versprei. Onthou, hondsdolheid is dodelik,” het mnr. Petrus Silinda, dieregesondheidstegnikus van die plaaslike kantoor van die staatsveeartsenydienste, hierdie week gesê. Die Limpopo-teen-hondsdsolheid-forum het verskeie belangegroepe saamgesnoer in die stryd teen die verspreiding van hierdie dodelike siekte en het die gebiede van die Mutale, Musina, Thulamela en Makhado Munisipaliteite geteiken. “Die Vhembe-distrik se hondebevolking groei aanhoudend en hondsdolheid kan ‘n gevaar vir die gemeenskap word,” het projek koördineerder Luambo Munzhedzi gesê. Hy het bygevoeg dat hulle volgende week met die Makhado Munisipaliteit gaan vergad-
er insake die munisipale bywette oor rondloperdiere en die munisipaliteit se hantering daarvan.

Ten years later, Cyril’s career has sky rocketed. He has slowly climbed the ranks from being a trainee mining engineer to accepting a senior position managing mining activities in the open pit. He is now essentially responsible for overseeing and monitoring all loading, hauling and construction activities, as well as maintaining the production environment at Venetia Mine. His success lies in his will of steel and strong work ethic. “As a young person in the new South Africa, you cannot afford to sit and wait for success to find you; you need to go out and make it happen,” says Cyril. He is quick to acknowledge a great group of mentors, leaders and support staff who got him to where he is today. “The great thing about the De Beers graduate recruitment programme is that it focuses on the whole individual and not just the professional aspect,” says Cyril. His development was shaped by professionals with expertise in practical training and an informed vision for his future. He is convinced that most graduates fail as a result of a lack of social support. “When you come from a disadvantaged background and suddenly have money in your pocket, you can easily make the wrong decisions, but I was given valuable life skills and a great platform to develop both personally and professionally,” says Cyril. As someone who has found inspiration from the leaders and professionals around him, Cyril realises that it is often difficult to find positive role models in a small-town classroom. He wants to inspire the youth to challenge their realities and make a better life for themselves. Die derde oggend kla sy dat daar te veel vars lug in haar longe is. Die vierde oggend trek sy die duvet stewig oor haar kop en ignoreer al Bernard se pogings om haar te motiveer. Die vyfde oggend grom sy vir Bernard. Sondagoggend sit Daisy vir Bernard en inwag voor sonop. Sy het haar groot wit koffiebeker in die een hand en sy glimlag vrolik vir hom. In haar ander hand hou sy ‘n sigaret vas. “Oepse Daisy!” is al wat hy sê voor hy met ‘n skewe glimlag sy hardlooproete met gemak aandurf. “Bernard,” roep Daisy hom toe hy natgesweet by die huis aankom. “Jy onthou nog dat Ousus en Jakobus hier kom eet vandag, nê? Ons het so lanklaas ‘n lekker skaapboud gemaak met gebraaide aartappels en rys en brokkoli met kaassous ... Ek sien regtig uit na ‘n tradisionele Sondagete!” “Daisy, my diertjie, net omdat jy nie by jou ooreenkoms hou nie beteken nie dat ek my dieët gaan verbreek nie. Ek begin nou net hierdie hoë-vet ding geniet nadat ek die skuld van jare se kondisionering afgeskud het. En vrugte gaan ek eers ernstig mis wanneer die lietsjieseisoen in volle swang is. Dis nou wel jammer van die pasta,
maar daar is darem honderde maniere met groente wat ons nog nie beproef het nie...” Daisy kyk geskok na Bernard. “Wil jy nou vir my sê jy wil nie gebraaide aartappels eet nie, Bernard? En niks kaassous nie? Dis Sóndag!” “Nou wat daarvan dat jy vandag afvat, Daisy? Jy kan die tafel mooi dek en blomme orals in die huis sit en sorg dat daar genoeg wyn en ys en dinge is, dan kook ék vandag vir ons middagete. So reg uit die rooi boek uit. Hoe klink dit vir jou, my mooiste?” Daisy knik stilweg. In die tuin pluk Daisy haar selfoon uit die mandjie uit wat halfvol lenteblomme gepluk is. Sy bel naarstigtelik. “Ousus, vandag is hier ‘n dekselse ding op hierdie werf. Bernard gaan kos maak! En nie T-bones en tjips nie – als kom uit Tim Noakes se boek! Jy gaan vir Jakobus moet voer voor julle hiernatoe kom en jy gaan maar ‘n paar blare en gesonde goedjies moet saambring vir jou om aan te peusel, want ek vermoed alles gaan vol botter en kokosneutolie en gansvet wees! Niks rys of aartappels nie.” “O, en Plore is ook hier die naweek? Ag tog, jy sal moet mooi verduidelik. Ek dink Bernard kry my terug daarvoor dat ek nie wou hardloop saam met hom nie en nog steeds rook...” Die res van die oggend vermy Daisy vir Bernard wat verwoed kook in die rooi kombuis. Sy dek die tafel met Sondagporselein en silwerware, vryf die kristalglase blink en span ritse wit vlaggies. Sy
maak rankskikkings by elke sitplek van die lenteblomme en vou en hervou die wit damask servette. Later sit sy haar gunsteling Joan Sutherland CD op, draai die volume hoog, gooi ‘n glas wit wyn in en sit op die stoep en rook. Sy vrek van nuuskierigheid oor die heerlike reuke wat uit die kombuis kom, maar haar koppigheid weerhou haar daarvan om oor Bernard se skouer te gaan loer. Buitendien kou sy byvoorbaat haar naels oor wat haar swaer en Plore gaan dink van Bernard se alternatiewe kos. Sy hoop net Ousus het haar advies gevolg en daardie manne van haar se eetlus getemper... Die kuier verloop verbasend gemoedelik. Almal sit op die stoep en ruil nuus en skindernuus uit. Soos gewoonlik is Juju en die Nkandla-verslag onder bespreking en Plore vermaak almal met sy nuutste vrystories. Jakobus gooi vir hom en (‘n baie gelukkige!) Daisy elkeen ‘n brandewyn en Coke en Ousus wei uit oor die nuutste leerplanne en die verwagte onderskeidings vir vanjaar se matrieks. Niemand waag dit om ‘n woord te sê oor diëte, oefening of rook nie. Net toe roep Bernard by die stoepdeur: “Kom sit aan, almal. Die voorgereg is gereed!” “Dis pangeroosterde harissa snoek met suurroom en gepreserveerde suurlemoen-sous,” verklaar Bernard trots. Daisy loer skelm na die afgehaalde gesigte van hulle gaste. Sy weet wat die onuitgesproke vraag is, “waar is die appelkooskonfyt en botter?” “Dis ... interessant, Bernard,” probeer Ousus dapper. “Waar kry
julle die gepreserveerde suurlemoen?” “Daisy het dit self gemaak,” verklaar Bernard trots en druk Daisy se hand onder die tafel. Die voorgereg borde is nie skoongeëet nie. Maar Bernard hou hom besig met die hoofgereg en sien gelukkig nie. Uit die kant van haar oog sien Daisy ‘n spul heerlike steaks langs die gasstoof lê. Sy pak die skottelgoedwasser met ‘n lied in haar hart. “Hoe sleg kan dit wees as die hoofgereg die stapelvoedsel van Waterpoort is,” dink sy optimisties. Bernard kom met ‘n glimlag groter as die Cheshire kat uit die kombuis uit en sit ‘n warm bord kos voor elkeen neer. Jakobus en Plore is skielik doodstil. Hulle staar na die borde voor hulle. “Ag heerlik, Bernard! Steak. En avokadopere. Vertel bietjie van die sousie wat jy hier oor die steak het?” Daisy se entoesiasme verloor stadig spoed terwyl Bernard vertel van die heerlike gorgonzola en spekvleis, die knoffel en room. “O, en amper vergeet ek – hier is die brokkoli mash en gebraaide Rosa tamatietjies vir bietjie kleur! Mens mis glad nie eers die gebraaide aartappels nie, nê?” Bernard se beker trots loop oor. Teen sononder bel Daisy vir Ousus. “Julle kan bly wees julle het nie gebly vir nagereg nie, Ousus! Ek het nou net aan Bernard se heuning en olyfolieroomys geproe...” “Weet jy dalk hoe ek moet maak om my geld terug te kry wat ek by Kalahari spandeer het op daardie vergalste rooi kookboek?”

Soutpansberg se top atlete kry erkenning Saterdag, 23 Augustus, was ‘n bedrywige dag vir lede van die Soutpansberg Atletiekklub met die hou van hul klubkampioenskappe, algemene jaarvergadering, asook hulle prysuitdeling. Die hoogtepunt van die dag was definitief die prysuitdeling waartydens die klub se top pres teerders vir hul harde werk beloon is. Mulalo Ravele en Renee Hamman is onderskeidelik aangewys as die klub se mans- en
vroueklubkampioen, terwyl Mulalo ook die toekennings ontvang het vir beste prestasie en ambassadeur. Ronnie van Niekerk en Sherryl James word op hulle beurt aangewys as die man en vrou wat die beste ontwikkeling getoon het, met Ferreira Nel en Amanda Kruger wat vanjaar die klub se sportman en –vrou is. Mpelo Thupani kry die toekenning vir sosiaal en word ook aangewys as die klub se beste mansstapper. Zian van den Heever, lid van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se fietsryspan, het nie net sy span nie maar ook die provinsie se naam hooggehou tydens die Gauteng Tour de Dam skole bergfietsliga op 16 Augustus by Hartebeespoortdam. Volgens beskikbare inligting is Zian die eerste seun nog van die hoërskoolspan wat ‘n podiumplek in die liga kon behaal. Zian was tweede uit ‘n groep van meer as 100 fietsryers wat weggespring het in die sub-junior afdeling. Foto verskaf.

Matthew Taylor, Limpopo Crusaders Polocrosse Club’s youngest player, gained his provincial colours in the annual interprovincial polocrosse tournament which took place from 4 to 6 July in Richmond, Natal. Matthew, who is 12 years old and only started playing the sport 18 months ago, played in the U/14 division. His club is very proud of his performance. Other club members who also participated in the interprovincials were Chris James, who played in the vets division, and Sheryl James and Sandy James, who represented the ladies. Since polocrosse is a newly established sport in Limpopo this year, these players will all be awarded Limpopo colours. This

Cycle routes a gift to community Sarah Venter of Makhado (Louis Tri chardt) is as fragile as any of us, but this doesn’t deter this lion-hearted woman from tackling mountains, so to speak. In a matter of weeks, she and Johan van Dijkhorst succeeded in mustering the goodwill of a number of local people, schools and businesses and laid out five neat mountain cycling routes as a gift to the community. The cycling routes were
officially opened the past weekend. “Please feel free to enjoy it by trying it out and write your comments in the booklet next to the map at the arboretum. There is also a blackboard to leave notes for your fellow cyclers if you wish,” explains Sarah. All five well-marked routes start and end at the arboretum at the bottom of the Hanglip road. It is graded from very easy
to very difficult and are therefore suitable for both families and experienced mountain bikers. The 5km cross-country route built by Johan, Casper Venter and Bas Rennings, with help from other cyclers and local schoolboys, is rather difficult, and even a bit dangerous. The routes are all done with Komatiland’s consent and are, at the moment, free for anyone’s use. (Contd on P 19)
