She was also one of the few women who spoke Tshivenda fluently. She was very respected in the

Venda community,” said Patrick. “As a couple they were inseparable - they complimented each

other in business; their contribution to the community was notable; their home was open to all and their love was unconditional – they will be sorely missed but never forgotten,” said Patrick. A private memorial service will be held for the couple for immediate family and close friends because of the Covid-19 restrictions. The service will be streamed live, but at the time of our going to press, the link to the service was not yet available.

The Limpopo community was left devastated on Monday with the sad news of the death of well-known and much-loved Louis Trichardt business couple, Anthony Scott (68) and his wife Norma (65). The couple died in a head-on collision on Monday morning, 25 January. The accident occurred around 08:40 on the Groblersdal/ Middelburg road. Accompanying them were two of their employees, Pheneul Dongola and Desmond Ndibuho Likavha. Their vehicle collided with an oncoming vehicle. Anthony and Norma died on impact, as well as three of the four occupants of the oncoming vehicle. Dongola and Likavha survived the accident, as well as the driver of the other vehicle. At the time of our going to press, Dongola and Likavha were still recovering in hospital, as well as the driver of the other vehicle. “My brothers Benjie, Ian and I are devastated. Life without Anthony and Norma is unconceivable. Better parents no child could ever ask for. They were our best friends, mentors, role models and inspiration,” said son Patrick. Many will remember Ant [as he was known by many] and Norma as the owners of Ant Scott Plumbing/Manasi Civils/Sons of Africa. “We’ve run the family business as a team and stuck together, no matter what. We strive to follow in their footsteps,” said Patrick. Anthony and Norma celebrated 41 years of marriage in November 2020. Welbekende oud-matrone oorlede Tannie Drieka van der Merwe, wat saam met haar man oom Carel vir 17 jaar (1988 tot 2005) op Louis Trichardt woonagtig was, is op 20 Januarie in die ouderdom van 80 jaar oorlede. Oom Carel is op 15 Desember verlede jaar oorlede, ook in die ouderdom van 80 jaar. Tannie Drieka sal onthou word vir haar jarelange verbintenis met beide die Louis Trichardt Gedenkhospitaal (waar sy onder meer matrone was) en haar noue betrokkenheid by die totstandkoming van die Zoutpansberg Privaathospitaal, waarin sy onder meer aandele besit het. Nadat sy haar aandele verkoop het, het hulle Pretoria toe getrek. Volgens haar dogter, Gerna Bekker, het haar ma se gesondheid geweldig agteruit gegaan, veral ná haar pa se dood. Hierdie week was voorwaar een van hartseer vir inwoners van die Soutpansberg met talle families wat geliefdes aan die dood moes afstaan. Onder hulle was die 65-jarige Marinda (Victor) van Wyngaardt, wat op 24 Januarie vanweë Covid-19 verwante komplikasies aan orgaanversaking oorlede is. Op Louis Trichardt het Marinda geen bekendstelling nodig gehad nie. Sy was ‘n boorling van die streek wat op 28 September 1955 hier gebore is en ook op Louis Trichardt skoolgegaan het. Sy was die tweede jongste van ses kinders. Marinda is op 5 Julie 1975 met Willem van Wyngaardt getroud, welbekende mede-eienaar van die eertydse Isofo Handelaars saam met sy broer, Jan van Wyngaardt. Sy het by die familie besigheid gewerk vandat sy skool voltooi het, tot en met 2013, waarna sy in 2014 afgetree het. “Sy sal onthou word as iemand wat uit haar pad sou gaan om ander te help. Haar kleinkinders was haar alles, met haar drukke en soene, en selfs in haar siek dae was daar altyd tonne liefde vir hulle,” het haar dogters Loraine en Lizelle gesê. Die familie is stomgeslaan oor Marinda se skielike dood. “Dit was so vinnig, so onverwags en so seer. Maar tog is daar so baie dinge wat ons in hierdie moeilike tyd laat glimlag, en so baie herinneringe wat tog net partymaal, vir so klein bietjie die seer verlig,” het die familie gesê. “Alles wat sy gedoen het, van kosmaak tot liefde uitdeel, was in oorvloed gewees,” voeg skoonseun Ettienne van Heerden by. Die datum van die roudiens, het sy gesê, moet hulle nog vasstel. Wyle Basie word oorleef deur sy vrou Wilma, kinders, kleinkinders en ‘n agterkleinkind. Wilma het ‘n spesiale woord van dank gerig aan die mediese personeel van LMB Makhado, asook al die vriende en kennisse vir hulle oproepe en woorde van vertroosting.

Soos wat die goeie reën oor die streek vanweë Sikloon Eloise hierdie week se nuus oorheers, het die reën ook 25 jaar gelede die Zoutpansberger se voorblad van 28 Januarie 1996 oorheers met ‘n artikel oor die beplande bou van ‘n nuwe dam om die Albasinidam se damvlak aan te vul. Die berig noem dat die Albasinidam se vlak met ‘n skamele 2% gestyg het na uiters goeie reën oor die streek sedert 1 Januarie van daardie jaar. Die reënval het gewissel van 266 mm op Louis Tri chardt tot meer as 650 mm op plase omgewing. Ten in die Piesanghoekomgewing. spyte hiervan het die vlak van die Albasini maar gestyg tot 9.07%. Die stadige styging van die dam vlak het weereens ‘n debat ontketen oor presies wat die rede daarvoor was. Sommige het gemeen dat te veel onwettige damme in die dam se opvangsgebied gebou is, wat invloei belemmer het. Ander het gemeen die dam se opvangs gebied was vanaf die begin onvoldoende. In daardie stadium was die dam in 1981 laas vol gewees. Volgens die berig sou die dam in die Latonyandarivier gebou word. Bouwerk sou aan die einde van daardie jaar begin en die damwal sou sowat 30 m hoog wees. Die dam is egter nooit gebou nie. In ander voorbladnuus is berig van ‘n bekende 62jarige vrou van Louis Trichardt wat

eers ontvoer en daarna verkrag is deur twee mans. Die vrou het vermis geraak op pad na hul plaas in die Rondeboschomgewing, nadat sy deur die twee mans by ‘n plaashek oorval is wat sy moes oopmaak. Hulle het haar na bewering agter in haar voertuig gedwing en met haar weggejaag. Hulle het haar toe verkrag en by ‘n skool in die Siba saomgewing afgelaai waar die skoolhoof haar gevind het en na die naaste polisiestasie geneem het.

Wally eager to get ﬁghting ﬁt again after stroke By Pétria de Vaal Readers of the Zoutpansberger will recall that local environmental activist and Soutpansberg resident Wally Schultz suffered a massive stroke on 30 October last year.

Friends and acquaintances were quite surprised when noticing that Wally was active again on Facebook. With the help of his sister, Delene Wingrove, he started using social media again. “I just try and teach him the small things like how to use his WhatsApp to send voice notes as he cannot read or write yet. He is so excited that he has mastered that now. It keeps him in contact with his friends,” Delene says. Wally’s strong fighting spirit has kept him going all along. When the following message appeared on Facebook on 20 January, all Wally’s friends were delighted to hear of the improvement with his health. Delene wrote on Wally’s behalf: “Remembering that scary day that I had my stroke, I was petrified of dying, but am so grateful that I am making a really great recovery with the help of awesome therapists at our Provincial Hospital. I am truly getting stronger by the day and want to thank you all for your kind messages and prayers that my sister reads to me.” According to Tiffany, one of Wally’s three daughters, he is very determined to get better. She says that nothing is worse for him than just sitting around. He made a very quick recovery. According to her, he is physically doing very well. They got him a bicycle as he is very keen to be active and fit and to become involved again in the community. “He has been very frustrated for being out of the loop since his stroke and is eager to continue his work,” she says. Wally’s main difficulty is with the condition of aphasia that affected his language ability. The implication for him is that he understands everything well enough, but he struggles to find the right noun. “He is working very hard on it, and it seems to be improving every week,” says Tiffany. The family is very thankful for the amazing occupational and the speech therapist at the provincial hospital who are working with him.

“The Covid situation at the moment is, however, frustrating, as he hasn’t been able to see them for some time,” mentions Tiffany. She also adds that the fundraising for Wally’s expenses went very well. Their goal is R500 000 and they have raised around R200 000 so far. They would like to thank everybody who contributed, from the bottom of their hearts. The funds have been used for, among others, expenses towards the private hospital fees, the neurologist’s fees, tests, scans, medication, and a caregiver. “Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to undergo surgery, as the risk of a second stroke was too high. There is a possibility that it can still be done – something that we are following up,” Tiffany mentions. She adds that he also needs to undergo surgery on his eye, as one eye is almost blind. At the same time, the family is also trying to put him on a medical aid. We are just so grateful for his sister Delene who spends so much time with him, teaching him things and keeping him company whenever she can. He also enjoys the visits from his friends – it really keeps his spirits up. The more he listens and talks to people, the better he gets,” Tiffany concluded. The Zoutpansberg Private Hospital (ZPH) in Louis Trichardt held a midmorning coffee break on Thursday, 21 Janaury, allowing the investors to meet members of the hospital’s supportive community. The hospital recently concluded a transaction with Summit Private Equity, a black-owned and -managed private equity firm that focuses on healthcare investments. As a direct result of this new partnership, the hospital will see a further major expansion, planned to be completed in phases. Phase 1 will be the construction of a brand-new +/- 90-bed hospital on the recently acquired land adjacent to the existing facility. Also in attendance were two representatives from CDC Investment Works, a United Kingdom-based investment company looking for worthy investment opportunities in Africa. Kyk nou na die kruis waar jou Plaasvervanger in jou plek sterf, glo dat jou sonde Hom toegereken is en daarom sy geregtigheid vir jou. Op grond daarvan doen God die wonderwerk in jou siel.
