Eskom threatens to flip the light switch on Musina - page 4

Pet or pest? By Jo Robinson

When it comes to animals behaving badly in places where humans think they should not be, opinions about what should be done with them usually differ. From feral cats decimating bird populations, to species of released pet snakes swallowing more fragile indigenous creatures, different factions will always be supporting the cats and snakes rather than the birds and legitimate wildlife, even though these problems are clearly man-made and hugely detrimental to ecosystems. As far as marauding monkeys are concerned, tempers can rise more than usual, and some people insist that shooting them on sight whenever they encroach on human property is the only way to stop them. Others will fight for them to be respected and protected and not harmed,

no matter how much damage they cause. Unfortunately, things can often get to the point where the different sides refuse to even hear each other out - a situation that is not going to help in finding a lasting solution to a very annoying problem. Monkeys have been a nuisance here and in other towns in South Africa for a very long time. The problem is not just their entering houses and helping themselves to whatever food they happen to be able to lay their hands on; instances where monkeys have injured people and pets have also occurred. They have killed dogs that were trying to chase them away. While it is true that they are destructive, cheeky thieves and very dangerous in some circumstances, like any other wild creature, they have no idea why their foraging makes humans so very angry with them. Even though they are such extreme irritations to us, most people would not like to

see them suffer as they do when they are injured by pellets or other missiles thrown to keep them away from personal property. When it comes to using larger weapons in areas inhabited by many people, we would be opening up much more terrifying possibilities, quite apart from the legalities involved. On at least one occasion in this country, a young child was mistaken for a monkey when he climbed a tree to pick some fruit and was shot dead. Unfortunately, no matter which side of the fence one is on as far as the monkey problem is concerned, any solution will probably not be a simple one or happen overnight. While Ms Melony Coetzee of Louis Trichardt is the first port of call for many local monkeys in trouble - and she helps them as best she can, at her own expense - she agrees that these primates do indeed cause problems that need solutions. Urbanised monkeys continue to be a bone of contention. What can we do (Contd on P2) to curb monkey invasions of our homes? Photo: Melony Coetzee.

Seven in court over illegal explosives in car Court News

The seven suspects who were arrested at the Beit Bridge border post for the possession of illegal explosives last Thursday evening, all appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Their arrest follows a joint operation by various police units at the border and from Musina. At the time, provincial police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said that the seven suspects had been apprehended after their suspicious behaviour caught the police’s attention and their vehicle was stopped and searched.

During the search, 50 fused explosive caps and 10 blasting cartridges were confiscated. “The origin of these explosives is still being determined, although it is believed that this might be part of a bigger syndicate,” said Ngoepe. He said that it was suspected that the explosives were destined to be used in business and armed robberies where safes were to be blown up. “But the ongoing police investigations will tell,” said Ngoepe. The suspects were identified as Simelinkosi Jubane (36), Bhekusiye Mbatha (38), Benjamin Ndlovu (36), Prosper Mhlongo (49), Zanele Moyo (35), Rulph Hlongwani (32) and Milton Ndlovu (31). They were all denied bail during their

court appearance and their case was postponed until 4 July for further police investigation. Shortly after their arrest at the border, the police’s acting provincial commissioner, Major General Jan Scheepers, applauded the police units for their sterling job in arresting the suspects. “The commitment of the men and women in blue continues yielding results in eliminating explosives that are commonly utilised during said crime categories. This is a sign to the criminals out there that no stone will be left unturned in Limpopo in dealing head-on with any violent crime, including the trio-crimes,” said Scheepers.

We are addressing Eskom debt, says Musina mayor By Anton van Zyl

Musina Municipality has announced an overall 6% increase in tariffs for the new year but stressed the importance of cutting down on expenditure and maintaining tighter financial control. The mayor, Cllr Mihloti Ethel Muhlope, is also confident that the municipality will be able to sort out its Eskom debt problems. During last Friday’s mayoral budget speech, Muhlope proudly announced that the municipality had received an unqualified report from the Auditor-General. “We are on course to achieve the targets set out in Operation Clean Audit,” she said. Muhlope stressed the importance of intensifying credit control measures to generate enough revenue to fund the municipality’s service delivery mandate. “We cannot have a situation where people continue to enjoy services without paying,” she said. She said that consumers currently owed the municipality R44,8 million. Making dents in the Eskom debt As far as Musina Municipality’s own obligations

towards their creditors are concerned, Muhlope said that Eskom’s threat to cut electricity because of the outstanding debt was of great concern. She explained that, when the current Council took over two years ago, the Eskom debt had stood at R140 million. “Last year, when I delivered the State of the Municipality address, the debt was standing at R115 million. As I’m speaking now, we have drastically reduced the debt to R53,6 million. We want to assure our people that everything possible is being done to address this matter,” she said. The mayor made it clear that the situation will only improve if cost-cutting measures are enforced. “Unnecessary travelling, avoidable overtime, worthless workshops and futile expenditure must all stop. Any fruitless expenditure must be recovered from the responsible officials,” she said. Mushroom churches and more electricity Mayor Muhlope made special mention of the problem that new church denominations that popped up across the region posed. “We cannot have a situation where every open space is turned

Although the Kruger National Park is a haven for much of South Africa’s wildlife, it is not an ideal home for the secretive and submissive brown hyena, also referred to as the wolf or strandwolf. Land outside of protected areas is vital to their survival, and Dr Katy Williams, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Mpumalanga, has been finding out why. New research led by Williams and her colleagues used data from 984 camera trap stations situated at sites in seven South African provinces to determine which factors affect land usage by brown hyenas. Panthera, an international organisation dedicated to the conservation of wild cats, primarily ran the surveys in partnership with the South African National Biodiversity Institute and other stakeholders. Camera traps were set up in national parks, nature reserves, game farms, and cattle farms. Three of the study sites were local, namely Lajuma and adjacent private properties, Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve, and Zingela Nature Reserve. “The results indicate that land usage by brown hyenas is driven by human disturbance and co-occurring predator species. Higher levels of activity by humans on foot and spotted hyenas had a negative effect on brown hyena land usage, while higher levels of vehicle activity and leopard activity had a positive influence,” said Williams. According Williams, brown

into an illegal church. Most painfully, these illegal churches have no ablution facilities, which is a very serious health risk,” she said. Muhlope highlighted the electricity projects that the municipality is doing in conjunction with Eskom. Thanks to a National Electrification Programme grant, electricity will be provided to four villages, namely Malale (154 connections), Masisi (44 connections), Tanda (138 connections) and Tshikhudini (329 connections). These villages all fall within areas where Eskom has the license to provide electricity. The Musina Municipality is also in the process of upgrading its electricity infrastructure. Part of this entails replacing copper wire lines with aluminium power lines. Plans are also underway to convert the conventional electricity meters in residential areas to prepaid meters. Mayor Muhlope touched on the subject of providing in the housing needs that exist by saying that the project to build 600 houses in the Musina urban area was progressing well. “Together with Coghsta, we will construct 400 RDP houses in the rural villages around Musina,” she said. Mining houses to the rescue The contribution by the major mining companies towards development in the region was highlighted by the mayor. She thanked Exxaro, custodians of the Tshikondeni Mine Closure Legacy Project, for building 36 three-bedroomed houses for deserving beneficiaries at Mutele B and Sanari villages. The project includes a state-of-the art crèche and will cost R16,9 million. De Beers’ Venetia Mine is once again making a massive contribution towards Musina, through which it hopes to transform the socio-economic landscape of the local communities. In the past year, the mining company has assisted learners with grants and bursaries and sponsored additional maths and science classes for Grade 10 to 12 pupils. “They assisted with payment of salaries to additional educators and school administrators at

three schools in Musina at a total contribution of over R3 million,” said Muhlope. The mining company has also spent R3,2 million on upgrading various streets in Musina Town. A further R6 million was spent on developing the infrastructure at three schools, namely Musina Secondary, Maroi Primary and Fholovhodwe Primary. In the next financial year, Venetia Mine has committed to assisting with various projects, which include a school support programme (R3 million), the renovation of the Sovetso Community Crèche (R2 million), the upgrading of various roads within Musina (R11 million), a school-infrastructure-development programme (R6 million) and assisting with water-provision projects (R2 million). “De Beers Venetia Mine is doing a lot to improve the lives of our people,” Muhlope said.

Cllr Mihloti Ethel Muhlope, mayor of the Musina Local Municipality.

Logic needed to address problem (Contd from P1) “The problems have been created by us,” she said. “Let’s stop trying to pass the buck to Nature Conservation and other foundations. Get involved. Get together. Do something to help yourselves and them.” Apart from the fact that much of the Vervet monkey’s historical territories have been taken over by people for agricultural and residential use, which causes them to have to range wider in search of food, a lot of the urbanisation of monkeys has more direct causes. Some people like to have baby monkeys as pets. They are cute and unique when they are small. They can be dressed up like little humans, and they are intelligent and affectionate infants. Unfortunately, these little sweeties grow up to become … monkeys. “Monkeys bite,” said Melony. “It’s a natural behaviour for them in the wild in various situations. Sooner or later you’re going to get bitten when you have a monkey for a pet.” In almost all cases, said Melony, people then let them loose in the wild, assuming that they will be taken in by a wild troop. This is not the case, explained Melony, adding that just as one is unlikely to welcome a random stranger wandering into one’s home and staying, monkeys do not like it either. They will often kill lone individuals encroaching on their territory. According to Melony, monkeys that have previously been pets will stay in town as they know their way around houses, and they are not intimidated by humans. If they form troops of their own with other wanderers, they will teach them the same

things. Many people who originally think it is wonderful to have all sorts of critters visiting their gardens also feed the town troops on purpose. They encourage them to come closer until they come to the unhappy realisation that the monkeys are not simply going to drape themselves ornamentally around and politely wait for snacks. By then, it is too late. Monkeys are quick learners. “They’re not overly afraid of humans any more, and a particularly large and aggressive troop is not likely to be afraid of large dogs or much else other than guns. While it’s understandable that there are many people trying to protect them from dying painful and drawn-out deaths, following injuries from pellet guns, we must also not disregard the danger they can pose, especially if they feel threatened. Apart from their being particularly aggressive when they feel cornered, they are also dangerous to small, unattended children when they are eating something,” said Melony. Melony suggests that, rather than wait for the authorities or others to fix our monkey problems, because it is unlikely that they can, people should try and be as proactive as they can in dealing with this “nuisance” with as little harm as possible to all parties—including the monkey invaders. “We should approach this issue with logic rather than with anger and emotion. Monkeys are just as much a part of the world as we are. They are important to ecosystems in the wild, so rather than try and eradicate them, let’s try and find ways to co-exist. Consider the reasons for their being on your property. Firstly, they’re foraging for food, and

secondly your property could appear to them as simply part of their territory. If they consistently find nothing easily accessible to eat in your garden or house, they are likely to move on to other places where they know that they’re much more likely to find something,” she said. Melony said that apart from the usual tips to keep them at bay like having screens on open windows, or otherwise closing them when nobody is home, one must not leave food near open windows. “Don’t leave food outside. Make sure that your rubbish bin is properly closed. Where everyone could work together would be by trying to address the problems created for monkeys and other wild animals by human encroachment onto their habitats. Make food accessible to them by designating stations back in the forests where we can drop off our ‘waste’ fruits and vegetables, while at the same time ensuring that it’s not easy for them to find anything to eat in the suburbs,” said Melony. According to Melony, no animal deserves to have cruelty inflicted on it for simply going about its business of living, though, so no matter how irritated people become with these pesky little guys, people should refrain from hurting them for no reason. “Chase them away with loud noises or hosepipes rather than shooting pellets directly at them. These don’t kill them outright and can lead to quite a lot of suffering and pain when these wounds get infected before death occurs,” said Melony. She suggested that the time might be ripe for people to come together and think of viable, sustainable, and kind solutions to end troublesome monkey invasions.

Is there still something in it for local farmers? By Jo Robinson

Farmers have more to worry about these days than the weather and the price of fertiliser. The past few years especially have seen many farmers facing theft and burglary in the form of violent, and often fatal, home invasions. One might wonder why they carry on. Why do they not move on to safer ways of earning their living? Long-time local resident Ms Leana Oosthuizen has been game farming in the Alldays area for many decades. She recently passed the torch to her son, Dean, who is now running operations there. Their 6000-hectare farm, Tshwarelano, has until December 2017 only held game, once a very lucrative sector of the industry. With the recent collapse in the prices of game species, as well as the high incidence of poaching, the Oosthuizens had to downsize game operations radically and move in another direction quickly. They began running cattle and planting crops such as butternuts only a year ago, and their hard work and determination in these undertakings that are completely new to them have produced a first very successful crop. They bade a tearful farewell to their rhino herd, choosing rather to send them to a safer environment than to hang on to them, with the huge extra expenses required to guard them from the constant violent poaching attempts. Leana’s father was responsible for the importing of the first disease-free buffalo to Limpopo, and she and Dean have continued to breed these beautiful creatures. The family have been keen conservationists throughout, hence their breeding of rhino and other rare breeds of wildlife, thereby helping to ensure their continued existence as a species. Unfortunately, this is no longer viable in terms of running a profitable business.

In addition to the stress of such huge and expensive changes, they have been the victims of three farm burglaries in the past six months. For the past several years, brutal farm attacks have been in the news with alarming regularity, with many of the country’s farmers and their employees murdered or viciously assaulted and lucky to escape with their lives. Farming in South Africa seems to be a dangerous occupation at this point. Currently, public hearings are being held from 26 June to look at amending Section 25 of the Constitution with a view to allowing the expropriation of land without compensation. We asked the Oosthuizens what kept them farming successfully after such dramatic changes in such a short space of time. “There is no choice,” said Leana. “Selling is not an option with the market for farms as it is right now. We have many years invested here, having built this farm to what it is now in time, money, The people of South Africa need their farmers. Dean Oosthuizen and his team are preparing one and labour. Apart from the practicalities, there is of their rhinos for transport to a safer destination. also the emotional aspect of wanting to protect all that we have worked for. We changed focus to what the country needs - food - and that is now the way forward for us. We will carry on with game breeding on a smaller scale. We need to ensure the preservation of as many species as we can.” The Oosthuizens are perfect examples of our farmers continuing to do what they have always done: buckle down in times of adversity and do what needs to be done. “I believe that there is a great future in farming in this country,” said Dean. “I view getting it right as a challenge; a challenge that excites me. This is where I was born, and I don’t want to change my lifestyle or lose all that my family has worked so hard for. situated on the school grounds, it will be run as a completely separate entity. “Triegie Winkel will have its own staff and management and operate during regular shop hours. The shop will be the official distributor of school uniforms for Louis Trichardt and Soutpansberg primary schools, as well as for Louis Trichardt High. Sports outfits for the high school will be available, and future team sponsors will find all the help they

need when sourcing items such as bags and apparel for supporters,” said Madeleine. She said she would update residents at a later stage as to the exact date of the opening ceremony for the Trie gie Winkel, as well as news on other possible apparel and products to come at relevant times, including an alumni range and memorabilia. “Many thanks to Ms Chrissie Pohl for all her help with the transfer process,” said Madeleine.

With the closing of Robot Electric in Louis Trichardt at the end of July, parents might have been wondering where they would be able to purchase school uniforms in the future as easily as they have always done. They need not wonder, however, and will be very happy to hear about the opening of the Triegie Winkel sometime between mid to late August this year, right on the grounds of Louis Trichardt High School. Ms Madeleine Nel, the school’s communication liaison, shared the details. She said the chairman of the school-governing body, Mr Rampie Gilfillan, together with the board, decided to take over Robot’s school-clothing department as a service to the community. At present, workers are hard at work during this school break to clear out and outfit what used to be the music room, to house the clothing shop. It will be conveniently situated as one enters the main school gate. Ms Madeleine Nel holds up the sign for the new Triegie Winkel Even though the new shop is opening in August.

Construction is well underway in the space that will house the new Triegie Winkel.

Eskom threatens to flip the light switch on Musina Despite Musina Mayor Mihloti Muhlope’s reassurance that the municipality is doing everything in its power to avert Eskom’s threats to cut the town’s electricity supply due to its outstanding debt, Eskom announced this week that they had decided to go ahead and cut the power. As recently as last Friday, while delivering her annual budget speech (see article on page 2), Muhlope said that Eskom’s threat was of great

concern to them. She made it clear once again that they could only succeed in repaying Eskom if they continued to enforce cost-cutting measures. “Unnecessary travelling, avoidable overtime, worthless workshops and futile expenditure must all stop. Any fruitless expenditure must be recovered from the responsible officials,” she said. Eskom first announced that they were going to cut the electricity supply to the Musina Municipality in May this year. This, Eskom explained, was due to the fact that the Musina Municipality owed

Eskom an outstanding amount of R72 736 380 for bulk electricity at that stage. “Musina Municipality is in breach of its payment obligation to Eskom, which undermines and places in jeopardy Eskom’s ability to continue the national supply of electricity on a financially sustainable basis,” said Eskom at the time. The embattled Eskom then gave Musina Municipality until 6 July this year to improve on their debt situation, warning that should this not happen, they would cut the power supply. Eskom also invited members of the public to submit motivations as to why they should not switch off the lights. At the time, the Musina Municipality reacted by means of their municipal spokesperson, Mr Wilson Dzebu, by stating that they would do everything in their power to keep the lights on and urged the public to keep their accounts up to date. Eskom, however, placed an advertisement in this week’s Zoutpansberger, announcing their final decision to cut the power. In the advertisement, Eskom states that as indicated in the notice published on 18 May 2018, they had carefully considered all written representations, comments and submissions received which, among others, detailed the negative effect the contemplated interruption was likely to have on residents and business, the fact that some customers were paying customer in the municipal area and many other representations. “After careful consideration of all the representations and the overall impact of the escalating municipal debt, Eskom has taken a decision to proceed with the contemplated interruption and/or disconnection of bulk electricity supply to Musina Local Munic-

ipality,” states Eskom. Eskom then adds: “Eskom hereby notifies all parties who are likely to be materially and adversely affected that the contemplated interruption of bulk supply to Musina Local Municipality will commence on 6 July 2018.” The contemplated interruptions will result in temporary scheduled disconnection at certain times. During the first week after 6 July, the electricity supply to the Musina Municipality will be cut from 06:00 until 09:00 and again from 17:00 to 20:30 from Monday to Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, the power supply will be interrupted from 08:30 to 12:00 and again from 15:00 until 19:00. This might sound bad for residents, but as from the second week, the electricity cuts will be even worse. From Mondays to Sundays, the electricity supply will be cut daily for a period of 14 hours from 06:00 until 20:00. “Eskom advises all parties who are likely to be materially and adversely affected by the contemplated interruption of bulk electricity supply to Musina Local Municipality to take all the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of lives and to limit damage to their equipment, operations and business,” states Eskom. They add that, notwithstanding the above proposed interruption time, Eskom may, upon 15 calendar days’ notice, disconnect the electricity entirely and indefinitely, should the electricity debt situation not improve. At the time of our going to press, the Musina Municipality had yet to respond to Eskom’s latest announcement.

Another top award to be presented during the Louis Trichardt Rotary Club’s annual induction dinner on 23 June was that of Entrepreneur of the Year. This year, the award went to Phillip Potgieter of Macridge. According to Rotarian Ranald Vise, who nominated him, Potgieter is one of those young farmers who refuse to stagnate and has taken their family nut farm to new heights over the past couple of years, including exporting to the international market. Pictured from left to right are Eugene Martin (who, as farm manager, accepted the award on behalf of Potgieter who was unable to attend due to other commitments), immediate past president of the local Rotarians Brian du Plooy and Vise.

As is the case every year, the Louis Trichardt Rotary Club gives recognition to members of the public who excelled in their field of expertise. This is done during the club’s annual induction dinner, which took place on 23 June. This year, the Rotary Club’s Service Award went to Christo Snyman of the Louis Trichardt Farm Watch. According to Rotarian Schalk Grobbelaar, who nominated Snyman for the award, Snyman went above and beyond the call of duty in his efforts to be of service to the community in the fight against crime the past year. In accepting the award, Snyman said that he alone could not take credit for the award, as everyone in both the farm and town watch played a role in combatting crime. Pictured from left to right are Grobbelaar, Snyman and immediate past president of the local Rotarians Brian du Plooy.

4

Rotarian Iain Purdon (left) became the Louis Trichardt Rotary Club’’s latest recipient of Rotary International’s Paul Harris Fellowship award. This is the highest service-above-self award an individual Rotarian can receive, with only 150 awarded each year by the Board of Rotary International. Pictured with him is immediate past president of the local Rotarians Brian du Plooy.

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 29 JUNE 2018

Your land is not yours Maebani farmer gets told By Tracy Ngobeni

The issue of land ownership is also surfacing in rural areas, and the question is being asked whether subsistence farmers in former homelands will ever be able to fully own the land they have toiled for generations. In the latest of such incidents, a farmer from Maebani in the Kutama area is involved in a dirty war of words with the local chief, whom he accuses of victimising him because he refused to follow instructions and sell his land. The 62-year-old Elias Matshisevhe says he is ready to fight tooth and nail for the farm he has owned for 18 years. This is the piece of land he says he had inherited from his late mother in 2001. His mother, in turn, inherited the land from his late grandmother, Vho Matamela Tshirundi in 1994. Throughout the years, Matshisevhe has produced many crops on this piece of land some 40 kilometres west of Louis Trichardt. He proudly displays pictures of him and his family members among mealies, cabbages and a variety of other vegetables. At the end of 2017, Matshisevhe says he was approached and told to sell his land to an Indian trader. He initially agreed and on 8 November, a handwritten contract was drawn up whereby he agreed to sell the land to Mohammad Samir Patel for R50 000. Mr Patel intended to expand his business to the adjacent land. Patel also paid a R25 000 deposit, with an agreement that he would pay the remainder of the money in instalments of R5 000 a month. The final payment was to be done on 12 April 2018. Matshisevhe then started to have second thoughts about the transaction. On 14 January 2018, he cancelled the transaction and paid back the money Patel had paid him. The cancellation of the contract seemingly did not go down well with Chief Vele Kutama, the senior traditional leader in the Maebani district. He apparently insisted that the land be sold to Patel.

Matshisevhe believes the chief was benefitting in one way or the other from the transaction. “The chief forced his friend to buy my farm, so that he can get the benefits. This doesn’t make me happy because the chief is supposed to defend his own people, not take what rightfully belongs to them,” he says. Matshisevhe alleges that Chief Kutama then went out of his way to make life difficult for him and his family. He was denied the right to bury his family members at the local cemetery. He also believes the chief blocked access to services such as those of the Department of Agriculture, where subsistence farmers’ land is ploughed free of charge. “The chief even instructed people to come and destroy my land, so that they can have a good opportunity to take away my land,” he says. “I have a family to support through the little that I get from selling the vegetables,” he laments. Matshisevhe says that the chief threatened to ban him from the village, together with his children. “He told me that he would write a letter to the schools where my children were to tell them to remove my kids. He stopped me from paying the (burial) society book in the village and threatened that he would also tell the businesspeople to stop selling things to me,” says Matshisevhe. In a telephonic interview on Tuesday, Chief Vele Kutama said that the land in question belonged to him and the royal council. “Matshisevhe doesn’t have land. He submitted a land claim and it was granted to him by the government, but all the land in Kutama belongs to me. He doesn’t even have permission to occupy or even a deed of grant. I sell my land to the businesspeople at a price of R600 or R1 500, so he must stop lying,” said Kutama. Kutama added that Matshisevhe had to come and apologise to the Royal Council before he would be allowed to work in the community. “All the people in the community agreed to cut ties with him. He must come and apologise, so that he can be reunited with the community,” added Kutama.

More escapees behind bars again Court News

Following the dramatic escape of seven convicted criminals from the Kutama Sinthumule Maximum Security Prison last year, three of those recaptured appeared in court on Monday. The 28-year-old Justice Makamo, 37-year-old Chris Faku, and 26-year-old Ntshengedzeni Manukha were convicted of escaping and each was sentenced to five years’ direct imprisonment in addition to their original sentences. The sixth of the escapees, the 34-year-old Phathutshedzo Nemadodzi, who had been serving a sentence for murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, was re-arrested on 20

June, while the search is still on for the seventh, the 30-year-old Raphael Nyota, also convicted of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, from Zimbabwe. The other two escapees, the 32-year-old Jabulani Isaac Mahlanga from Pretoria and the 30-year-old Ntshavheni Thomas Munyai from Riverside, pleaded guilty immediately after their apprehension and re-arrest, and admitted that they had taken advantage of the strike by prison warders taking place at that time. Mahlanga said that when they had seen some prisoners going through an open gate and through office windows, he had followed them out. They each received four years jail time added to their

current sentences. The seven prisoners escaped from the maximum security facility, which houses some of the country’s most dangerous convicts, on 27 October last year by taking advantage of a chaotic prison riot in which three prison buildings were damaged, and which had erupted as result of protest action by prison wardens. Limpopo provincial police spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe urged the public last week to help track down Nyota. Anyone with information that can lead to his re-arrest can contact Colonel Nyelisani Mabatha at 082 565 8171, the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111, the Crime Line SMS at 32211 or their nearest police station.

Schools win R25 000 from Venetia By Tracy Ngobeni

De Beers’ Venetia Mine hosted a debate competition between 11 schools at a career-guidance day held in Musina and at the Blouberg-Makgato village last Thursday and Friday. The participating schools were asked to debate the advantages and disadvantages of mining in the province, and the orators has everything to fight for as R75 000 was up for grabs for the winning schools to sponsor a community or school project. The three winning schools over the two-day period were Eric Louw High School, Renaissance Secondary and Masoka Secondary Schools. Each school won R25 000. De Beers Consolidated Mines

Enterprise and Supplier Development senior commercial manager Mr Gregory Peterson said that the purpose of the debate was for the children to gain full knowledge of the mining industry. “We did this for the children to go and do more research about mining and its pros and cons,” said Peterson. An entrepreneur and the founder of four radio stations and MSG Afrika Holdings, Mr Siphiwe Mdlalose, encouraged the youth always to believe in themselves and set goals that will help them in the future. “You are not a mistake. There is a purpose set for you and you need to fulfil it. Out of 100 learners, only 50 will make it to Grade 12. Out of the 40% of unemployed youths, most end up in jail,” said Mdlalose.

Mdlalose urged young people to take full responsibility for themselves, to overcome their fears and to stop treating the world as if it owed them something. Vutlhari Dhliwayo, a Grade 11 pupil at Renaissance Secondary, said that she was happy that the money would help build a science laboratory. “Even though we were given little time to prepare, I am happy that this money will help our science learners to learn what we see,” said Dhliwayo. Munadia Islam, a Grade 11 pupil at Eric Louw High School, said the money would help with renovations at the school. The team from Masoka was just as excited about their R25 000 prize money, indicating that it would go to a good cause.

As part of the Louis Trichardt Rotary Club’s annual induction dinner on Saturday, 23 June, tribute was paid to outgoing Rotary Ann president Natasha Walberer. Fellow Rotary Ann Diane Bannatyne thanked Natasha for her service the past year. Pictured from left to right are immediate past president of the local Rotarians Brian du Plooy, Walberer and Bannatyne.

BTW Ing.
