The Louis Trichardt central business district (CBD) is currently abuzz, with some major renovations taking place at several of the big shopping centres. This follows Gemgrow Properties’ purchase of the Checkers Centre, Noor Centre, Hawama Noor Centre and the Shoprite centre from wellknown businessman Mr Solly Noor. In addition,

Gemgrow also owns the Thompson building, the Autozone building, and the Total Sports and Foschini buildings. “Gemgrow is heavily committed to making Louis Trichardt great and they are committed to delivering services that people expect from a landlord,” said Gemgrow in a press release. They said they wanted to give back to the community and hence they were in the process of refurbishing several of their properties in order to make the

consumers’ shopping experience safer and more pleasant. This includes all centres, apart from the Thompson, Autozone, Total Sport and Foschini buildings, which are to be tackled at a later stage. In charge of the upgrades and rental aspect of the centres is Ancora, while Jo-Marel Construction was appointed as contractor. The Zoutpansberger spoke to the managing director of Jo-Marel Construction, Mr Johan van Aswegen, this week to find out what exactly they

“People still prefer to stop in front of a shop rather than to park far away and having to walk long distances to the shop. But then the shops must be up to standard. If we allow the standard to drop, like in many other rural towns, then people will definitely drive across the road to shop somewhere else,” said Van Aswegen. By now, residents might have witnessed a vast improvement at the Checkers centre, the Choppies centre and shops along Songozwi Street between Munnik and Burger Street. Upgrades include the installing of lights at all the properties to increase visibility. Also, due to the high footfall of the sites, the refurbishment process also includes paving the streets of the CBD. To address the problem, Gemgrow is also installing boreholes and water at their centres. They have also fixed the toilets at all the centres and installed baby-changing stations in the bathrooms to allow mums to change their children comfortably. So, who is going and who is staying? Van Aswegen said that, at present, both Checkers and Choppies would remain where they were as both still had two-year lease agreements. “We are in negotiation with Checkers and everything looks positive,” said Van Aswegen. This is not to say that Checkers will not be opening a second branch at the “new” Makhado Crossing. Most of the shops and businesses will remain at the Checkers centre, including FNB and the SASSA offices, while new additions to the centre include Marius Brönn Pharmacy moving in and the opening of a Checkers Liquor. Further

down the road, Mr Price and Milady’s will also be moving out, but not too far. They will be moving into the ground floor of the ABSA building. In their place, negotiations are already at an advanced stage for replacements. “Mr Price will be opening a stunning new store,” said Van Aswegen. As for the second and third floor of the building, Van Aswegen said they were envisaging some twenty flats aimed at the middle-class income group. Residents will also soon see major renovations at the Shoprite centre. Apart from the building’s refurbishments, the whole area will be tarred again, as well as highmast lighting poles erected for increased visibility and safety. According to Van Aswegen, all renovations are taking place in phases, the first of which already started in mid-March this year. If everything goes according to plan, all refurbishments will be completed by the end of September. To top everything off, all the buildings will also receive new signage, apart from a new look.

No, Roman’s Pizza in Louis Trichardt did not close down! They merely moved to a temporary pop-up store in the parking area opposite Mike’s Kitchen at Makhado Crossing. The reason Roman’s Pizza had to move is to make room for Standard Bank, which will be moving into their spot as part of the Makhado Crossing expansion into a regional mall. “We moved out last week Thursday and were back in business the next day at 15:00 from the pop-up store,” said Roman’s Pizza franchise owner Christel Smith. Although the move is seen as an inconvenience to many, Christel said she was excited

about their new pick-up drive-thru shop being built right next to the current pop-up store location. Construction workers have already started laying the news store’s foundations. “We hope that it will not take longer than four months,” said Christel. In the meantime, it is business as usual for Roman’s Pizza. Orders can still be placed at Tel 015 516 5942 or 015 516 5944 as their business hours remains the same. “We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the construction period, and please continue to support us,” said Christel. She added that their po-up store still needed to be branded to make it more visible to the public.

Inwoners slaan dekking na skote in woonbuurt klap Deur Andries van Zyl

‘n Wilde polisiejaagtog en skote wat klap het Maandag omstreeks 09:00 die onderdorp van Louis Trichardt in rep en roer gehad. Dit sou na die tyd blyk dat dit die resultaat was van ‘n gesamentlike operasie tussen die polisie en landelike veiligheid se taakspan (bestaande uit lede van die dorps- en plaaswag) wat gelei het tot die arrestasie van een verdagte en die herwinning van ‘n ongelisensieerde vuurwapen. Soos met enige klein dorpie, was daar baie stories na die voorval. Volgens sommige was daar een verdagte, ander het gesê daar was twee, terwyl daar die was wat “gehoor” het daar was drie verdagtes waarvan een gevang is, een gewond is en een doodgeskiet is. Sover die Zoutpansberger egter kon vasstel, was die polisie en taakspan die oggend omstreek 09:00 besig om inligting op te volg oor ‘n verdagte persoon by ‘n kompleks in Krugerstraat onderkant Rissikstraat. Terwyl hulle besig was hiermee, het die polisie klaarblyklik berig ontvang van twee ander verdagtes wat hulle in die omgewing bevind wat vermoedelik betrokke was by die kaping van ‘n minibus-taxi in Musina Sondagaand. Die twee verdagte is gewaar en die wetstoepassers het hulle agterna gesit. Een van die verdagtes het blykbaar by ‘n huis in Burgerstraat (naby die Katolieke Kerk) ingehardloop. Toe hy hier ingehok is, het hy oor die heining na ‘n woning in De Beerstraat gespring. Ook hier is hy ingehok, waarna hy weer terug is oor die muur na Burgerstraat se kant. Weer was hy vas en weer het hy na De Beerstraat se

kant oorgespring waar hy klaarblyklik kort daarna in ‘n buitetoilet aangekeer en gearresteer is. Te midde hiervan was daar ‘n skietery. “Dit is nogal erg. Hier sit jy rustig op ‘n Maandagoggend en skielik klap daar skote rondom jou,” het ‘n inwoner van De Beerstraat, Jan Bouwer, Dinsdag aan die Zoutpansberger gesê. Hy en sy ouboet, Petrus, was vinnig weg van die huis, toe die drama afgespeel het. “Toe ek omstreeks 09:00 terugkom by die huis, toe roep my vrou my. Sy het gesê sy was besig om haar hare droog te blaas, toe sy net karbande hoor skreeu en skote hoor klap,” het Jan gesê. Jan werk al vir jare as motorwerktuigkundige vanaf sy huis. Een van sy kliënte, ds. Samuel Mametza, vergesel deur twee van sy kleinkinders van onderskeidelik twee en ses jaar oud, het kort voor die skietery by Jan opgedaag en hom gewag. “Ek het net parkeer en uitgeloop om bietjie in die son te staan, toe hoor ek ook net karbande skreeu en skote klap. Ek gryp toe my twee kleinkinders en druk hulle onder Jan se karavaan (wat in die agterplaas staan) in. Ek self het ook dekking geslaan,” het Samuel vertel. Jan se buurvrou, Anette van der Berg, was ten tye van die skietery in haar voortuin. “Sy het vir my gesê dit was die vinnigste wat sy en haar tuinier nog ooit moes dekking slaan agter die muur,” het Jan vertel. Gelukkig is niemand tydens die skietery beseer nie. Op ‘n positiewe noot is ‘n verdagte agter tralies en ‘n onwettige vuurwapen van die straat af. Provinsiale polisiewoordvoerder kol. Moatshe Ngoepe het Dinsdag die voorval bevestig en gesê dat die

Emerging chicken farmers lose out due to dumping By Charmain Lines (FairPlay activist)

The entrepreneurial spirit of South Africans is alive and kicking – or clucking, when one looks at the more informal sector of the chicken industry. Two emerging chicken entrepreneurs in Louis Trichardt share their stories and draw a clear picture of how predatory imports continue to smother their massive growth potential, at best limiting them to stay small; at worst driving them out of business. South Africa’s chicken industry has more to it than its large integrated producers. These companies that supply their own feed and day-old chicks, and have their own broiler farms and processing plants, are models of efficiency and economies of scale. They contribute massively to the national economy and the economies of the rural areas where their operations are. Nonetheless, they are only 80% of our country’s chicken story. The other 20%, known as non-integrated producers, include thousands of subsistence farmers whose business fortunes are subject to the slightest change in market conditions or personal circumstances. But it also includes a variety of micro and small businesses that are achieving success in niche markets. Clive Tigere distributes day-old chicks in and around Louis Trichardt. His customers are smallscale broiler farmers who raise birds to sell, either live or freshly slaughtered, to rural households. “Last year, orders were through the roof,” says Tigere. “I could easily move 100 000 chicks a week in peak times.” He spent the year accumulating cash and, once he had the required capital, invested in a few incubators and finally built a hatchery on his farm with the capacity to supply 20 000 chicks a week – a move that took him from being a distributor only to also hatching his own stock. According to Tigere, Limpopo has a “massive” informal chicken market. “There are literally thou-

sands of broiler farmers who grow and sell live chickens locally.” Given that the province currently has only one hatchery, whose output mostly goes to large chicken producer RCL Foods, most of these small farmers get their chicks from hatcheries up to 600km away. “I see a compelling business case to expand my own operation,” says Tigere, talking about his plans to ramp up to 60 000 chicks a week by year end and, by mid-2020, start a parent-stock operation. “The only thing stopping me is the fact that my market has drastically reduced.” From a base demand of 40 000 chicks a week in 2018, these days Tigere moves only 12 000 a week. A drastic reduction in anybody’s terms, and a clear indication that his customers are losing their customers. Tigere blames predatory imports flooding the Limpopo market, a view confirmed by inside information from a close friend who is a retailer in the area. “My friend runs a retail store in a small town just outside of Louis Trichardt, and they move tons of chicken weekly,” says Tigere. “He tells me that most of the chicken they sell is imported; the only local product they stock anymore is fresh chicken, which accounts for about 10% of their sales.” When quizzed why he fills his fridges with imported chicken, the shopkeeper is brutally honest, says Tigere: “Price is everything here. Local producers simply cannot meet shopkeepers at the price point importers can.”

A qualified statistician, Tigere has done his homework about imports and knows that the reason countries such as Brazil can afford to export chicken portions in bulk to South Africa at next to nothing is because these products have no value in their country of production. “They export breast meat to the US and Europe and make their profits there, so the rest of the chicken is just leftovers that they get rid of at any price. I operate, is that it is driving local farmers out of business,” he says. “It is unfair and predatory trade that is against the rules of international trade.” Livhu Nengovhela, whose customers are mainly resellers who supply live chickens into townships around Louis Trichardt, says he is also losing customers due to the influx of imports. Depending on the season, Nengovhela moves between 6 000 and 10 000 live chickens a month, and he is now looking at ways to adapt his business. The shrinking whole-bird market is the main reason why Nengovhela wants to diversify. “People are starting to buy bulk frozen chicken pieces for events like funerals,” he says. “I can still make a living, but I have to change what I do if I want to grow.” His plan is to invest in a modest abattoir that

will enable him to supply fresh, whole chickens to hotels, restaurants and chesa nyamas (traditional braai-meat restaurants) in the area. He also wants to tap into the household market directly by doing his own bulk packs of, say, 10 chickens to meet a family’s meat requirements for a month. When fully operational, the 2 000-chickensa-day abattoir will employ 10 people and have enough capacity to also service other chicken farmers in the area – further strengthening Nengovhela’s business case. The stories of Tigere and Nengovhela share a common theme: the impenetrable ceiling that predatory imports have dumped onto their growth potential. All of them are astute businesspeople who identified, and continue to identify, unique market gaps to fill. However, as the cheaper dumped chicken flood into supermarkets, wholesalers and spaza shops, the independent producers are increasingly trapped in niche markets – which are also, slowly but surely, shrinking. “These case studies confirm that our local industry players – regardless of size – have the business acumen and chutzpah to succeed in a competitive market as long as it is fair,” says Francois Baird, founder of FairPlay, the social movement that advocates for fair trade practices and against crocodile trade. “The dumped chicken is often only a few cents per kilo cheaper to consumers, but that is enough to bully small producers out of the market. It’s unconscionable that importers campaign to keep increasing the market share for heavily subsidised foreign producers such as Brazil and the EU, while our own producers, who receive no government subsidies, are left to fend for themselves, and go under,” said Baird. He argues that protection against unfair and damaging imports would lift the lid off the non-integrated chicken industry, allowing for thousands of new entrants, ensuring food security, and benefiting millions of South Africans.

Die gewilde Dopperkuierkafee van die Gereformeerde Kerk op Louis Trichardt bied weer op Vrydag, 2 Augustus, ‘n spyskaart vir elke kieskeurige inwoner. Behalwe vir die normale geregte is daar ook twee sakpaskombo’s beskikbaar. Die spyskaart bestaan uit: Dopperburger (R20), kaasburger (R25), russian en slaptjips (R25), vis en slaptjips (R30), vars, tuisgemaakte slaptjips (R10), pannekoek (R5) en ‘n bunny chow (R40). Die seekoskombo bestaan uit vis en slaptjips, pranko prawns, calamariringe, 330 ml koeldrank, suurlemoen en tartaarsous en kos R60. Daar sal weer heerlike snuisterye wees om van die kies en te keur soos kerrie-en-rys, hamburgers, pannekoek en vele meer. An arts & crafts market will be held at the Louis Trichardt SPCA on 10 August. The market will coincide with the SPCA’s monthly farmer’s market. According to Mr Wayne Page, one of the organisers, the aim of the market is to establish a platform for local craftsmen. Exhibitors who produce handcrafted goods and food stuffs are welcome. They discourage exhibitors who sell mass-produced products. The arts & crafts market promises to be a fun-filled event, with horse rides for the children, face painting and lots of games. 10 ISABILITY GOLF DAY

Ek is ... die Weg, die Waarheid en die lewe

Almal wat deur God vergewe is, moet sy vergifnis biddend uitleef. Skriﬂesing: Matteus 6:5-15 (veral 12, 14, 15)

lmal van ons het vergifnis nodig. Omdat ons van nature sondig is, en ook elke keer wat ons teenoor God of iemand anders oortree, moet ons vergewe word. En God moet ons vergewe. Ons kan keer op keer vergewe word deur mense, maar as God ons nie vergewe nie, help dit ons niks. Hier is dan die goeie nuus: Al ons skuld is reeds deur God vergewe. Maar al is dit so, wil Hy hê dat elke gelowige Hom in gebed opreg sal smeek om vergifnis. Hoekom? Sodat ons kan besef hoe afhanklik ons van God is vir die redding wat Hy gegee het, en die vergifnis. Almal wat in opregtheid bid, word verseker van die ware, ewige en onvoorwaardelike vergifnis van God. Deur die swaar straf wat Christus in ons plek gedra het, is gelowiges vry van skuld. Maar ons moet nie tevrede daarmee wees om net te bid om vergifnis, en dit te ontvang nie. Nee, net soos ons verwag om vergewe te word, moet ons andere vergewe. Ons moet alle kwaad en misdaad wat teen ons gedoen word, sonder enige uitsondering vergewe. Selfs die ergste dinge. Dit klink baie moeilik, veral as ons dink aan die kwaad en boosheid in die wêreld, en die geweld wat mense teen mekaar pleeg, ook in ons omgewing. Maar dit is wat God eis. Onvoorwaardelike, ware vergifnis waar ons eintlik van die oortredinge teen ons vergeet. Dit is baie belangrik dat ons ware vergifnis sal bewys. Ons moet nie in die openbaar mense vergewe, en in die geheim nog steeds kwaad wees vir hulle nie. Ware vergifnis moet lei tot versoening tussen mense. Hoekom verwag God hierdie van ons? Omdat Hy ons onvoorwaardelik vergewe het. Daarom moet ons bid dat die onvoorwaardelike vergifnis van God ons so moet aangryp dat ons nie anders kan en wil nie as om self ander te vergewe soos Hy vergewe het nie. Wanneer ons onsself opreg voorneem om andere te vergewe, is dit die bewys van die genade wat ons in Christus ontvang het. Ons vergewe ander, want ons is intens bewus dat ons die ewige vergifnis verkry het. Andere hoef niks te verdien om deur ons vergewe te word nie, omdat ons ook nie verdien om deur God vergewe te word nie. Hoe vergewe ons dan opreg? Dit is iets wat geen mens self kan doen nie. As ons moes kies om te vergewe of nie, sou ons klaaglik misluk het. Nee, ons kan slegs vergewe wanneer God self ons lei, wanneer ons deur die Heilige Gees beheers word. Slegs deur die Heilige Gees kan ons die liefde en vrede teenoor andere uitleef, en hul oortredinge nie teen hulle hou nie. Slegs deur Hom kan ons andere met sagmoedigheid en selfbeheersing behandel, sodat ons nie oortredinge teen ons met woede en haat beantwoord nie. - Ds. Hannes Lee (Gereformeerde Kerk Messina)

MAC help met bou van droombaan

Hoërskool Louis Trichardt is baie trots op netbalspeler Leandrie de Jager (Graad 11). Leandrie is ná afloop van die o.19 nasionale kampioenskappe in die Kaap gedurende die Junie/Julie-vakansie opgeneem in die oor 21 jaar Vhembe senior netbalspan wat vanaf volgende week sal deelneem aan die nasionale kampioenskappe by die Universiteit van Johannesburg.

Laerskool Messina se fietsryklub het hierdie jaar met ‘n spoed afgeskop met dubbeld die aantal fietsryers as verlede jaar. Om verder by te dra tot die pret en pomp van adrenalien op ‘n Maandag en Woensdag, het die klub se borg, MAC, die fietsrybaan onder hande kom neem en dit in ‘n droombaan kom omskep. Die eerste fase is reeds in gebruik geneem tydens die fietsrykamp wat op 6 Julie aangebied is. Die klub het mnr. Graham Chrystal genooi om die ryers te kom touwys maak ten opsigte van die vaardighede wat nodig is om sonder moeite oor die hindernisse te ry. Shaun Beeton (regs) het op sy beurt ‘n derde plek in die Sporter-klas vir seuns o.14 behaal.

Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se eerste netbalspan het ‘n borgskap van nuwe baadjies, hempies en rokkies ontvang van Luke Enslin van Soutpansberg Spar en Louis Trichardt Superspar, Promo Man en Porche Villa. Brian du Plooy het op sy beurt paalbeskermers vir die span geborg. Afgeneem is van die spanlede saam met Du Plooy (links) en Enslin (regs). Die span het hul opregte dank uitgespreek teenoor die borge, asook Quentin Thompson (die skool se sportorganiseerder) vir die reël van die borgskap.

Lede van die Hanglip Posduifklub in Louis Trichardt het die afgelope naweek kragte gemeet in twee opewedvlugte vanaf Bloemfontein. Die 10A-wedvlug is gewen deur Mieke & Mike Coetzee, nadat hulle wenduif die afstand voltooi het met ‘n wenspoed van 957.90 meter per minuut. Die res van die Top 10 plekke het gegaan aan RWJ & Mike Coetzee (2de en 6de), Gerhard Bezuidenhout (3de, 4de, 5de, 7de en 10de), TE Smit (8ste) en Julius Pienaar (9de). In die 10B-wedvlug was dit RWJ & Mike Coetzee wat kon spog met ‘n eerste plek, nadat hulle

wenduif die afstand voltooi het met ‘n spoed van 1162.06 meter per minuut. Hulle was ook 2de en 3de. Mieke & Mike Coetzee was 4de, Nico Bezuidenhout 5de, 6de, 9de en 10de en Gerhard Bezuidenhout 7de en 8ste. Eerskomende naweek vlieg die klub vanaf Warrenton oor ‘n afstand van ongeveer 755 km. Wat die klub se huidige puntestand betref, loop Gerhard Bezuidenhout voor met 924 punte. Die Louwtjies het oortuigend gewen met ‘n wegholtelling van 52-0. Hulle sal nou op 3 Augustus in die semifinaal van die kompetisie te staan kom teen Hoërskool Gerrit Maritz. Bowls club over half a century old

The Louis Trichardt Bowls Club is one of the few local clubs that can boast a proud history of more than 50 years. To become a member of the Louis Trichardt Bowls Club, one only needs to fill out a membership form and be accepted. Full memberships costs R2 000 per year which includes all affiliation fees regarding provincial and national participation. A person can also become a social member costing R400 per year. This will allow the person to play games, but not qualify for provincial and national participation.
