Scholar killed in cold blood

Trust “Kalawa” Mapelakolu.

A 19-year-old pupil was shot dead and left lying on the railway tracks along Kort Street in Louis Trichardt last Thursday night. The resident of Tshikota and a Grade 10 pupil at Masedi Combined School, Trust Mapelakolu, was last seen in the vicinity of the Transnet train station, carrying his laptop at around 21:00. According to the information made available to Limpopo Mirror, he was on his way to a local tavern to do some disc mixes. The deceased, who was well known as “Kalawa” in Tshikota and beyond, was a DJ, a performance poet and an aspiring writer. The family’s representative, Ms Shoni-

sani Madula, said that the family members were still reeling from shock and added that they were traumatised by his untimely death. “Trust was last seen during Thursday (last week), and then we only got the sad news about his senseless murder that night,” she said. “He was a very good boy who loved all people, and that is the reason why he liked DJ-ing to earn pocket money, instead of being a troublemaker in town.” She indicated that the family was very hurt by Trust’s death. She added that he was a dedicated pupil who had aimed to beautify his life. “After his parents’ death some years ago, he expressed his sadness and hurting, and vowed to go to school to

better his life,” she said. “Our child was a responsible young man and we wonder what got into the mind of whoever shot him dead.” The principal of Masedi Combined School, Mr Azwitamisi Makhwathana, said that the school was affected by Trust’s tragic death. “He was a highly talented and bright learner.” The spokesperson for the Makhado police, Const Irene Radzilane, confirmed the incident and said that the police had opened a murder case. “We were alerted to the shooting, which happened at night on 24 September,” she said. “Our police members got there and found a male victim lying dead. We are investigating

this case.” The police said that there were no belongings on him when he was found. The family believes that whoever shot Trust might have taken his laptop. “We hope that his laptop might also help the police in their investigations,” said Madula. “This is not a case which should only be a concern to the family, but a matter which must concern everyone who stays in and around town. We can’t allow a situation where our children cannot walk freely in the streets because there are people who will murder them. However, we still say that the police will help crack this case.” Mapelakolu will be laid to rest on Sunday at Tshikota cemetery at around 06:00.

Another accolade for model Rotondwa A 21-year-old model, Rotondwa Musitha, says that she will continue with deeds of goodwill toward the less fortunate as ubuntu is part of her African heritage. She spoke to Limpopo Mirror shortly after the Miss Heritage South Africa pageant, which took place at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg on 24 September. Her hard work earned her the position of first princess.

Ziphozihle Ntlanganiso was crowned Miss Heritage South Africa 2015 and Karabo Maupa is the second princess. During the event, Rotondwa also received the Public Choice Award. “Miss Heritage SA was one of the most competitive pageants I have taken part in so far, with 17 smart girls who knew what they wanted and had all set their eyes on the crown,” she said. “The journey on its own was amazing.

Never before have I been part of a group of participants in a pageant who worship and pray together after rehearsals.” She said that she would support Ziphozihle in her journey to the Miss Heritage global competition, which will take place in November. “I plan to still continue doing charity work at Rivers Foundation, but it is my wish to do something in Louis Trichardt too,” she said. “I am an ambassador for our heritage and with that I want to be part of the generation that will teach our youth about our heritage.” She explained that, to her, her heritage symbolised knowing where she came from and having knowledge of the things Africans had inherited, knowing her culture and realising what defined the Vhavenda as an ethnic group. “An elder once said, it was important that we as young people be infused with our heritage, because once they have left the world, they will have left with their heritage knowledge,” she said. “I believe the current generation should take advantage of the knowledge the elders are willing to pass down, so that we may know where we started and so that the generation following in our footsteps isn't lost.” She stated that there was nothing as honourable as being able to speak one's home language and being able to write it. “It's Evergreen model, Rotondwa Musitha, aka Miss EveryThing, so beautiful when you can take was awarded a Public Choice Award during the Miss Heritage pride in your heritage and the SA pageant. Long term in jail for Freddy Mulaudzi The stokvel robbery case against four accused was finalised last week in the Sibasa Regional Court, where Freddy Mulovhedzi (55), Fulufhelo Mulovhedzi (22), and Lufuno Mavhunge (29) were all sentenced. The fourth accused, Ms Vhulahani Ndou (40), was acquitted after the court arrived at the conclusion that there was not sufficient evidence to link her to the case. According to the spokesperson of the Levubu Police, W/O Solly Mukhola, Freddy Mulovhedzi was sentenced to 32 years' imprisonment. A 22-year jail term was handed down on Mavhunge. Fhulufhelo Mulovhedzi, who is Freddy Mulovhedzi's son, was given two years in jail, with an option of paying a R1 500 fine. The three convicts and Ndou were arrested pursuant to a robbery case which had happened at the

home of the local stokvel’s treasurer, Mrs Joyce Mukwevho, in Tshakhuma-Luvhalani on 3 October in 2012. Mukwevho and her daughter Aluwani were awakened by men who assaulted them with an iron bar and demanded money. The two ladies eventually handed them R28 000, which reportedly belonged to the local stokvel. Mukwevho and her daughter were seriously injured during the robbery and Mukwevho was consequently hospitalised for six days. All the other accused were arrested after Mulovhedzi (jr) was found in possession of a stolen cellphone belonging to Mukwevho. The phone was taken in the night of the robbery, and Mulovhedzi (jr) said that he had received the phone from his father, who was with Mavhunge. Ndou was initially linked to the case after it was alleged that she had colluded with the three men to rob the money. The case was postponed many times for the trial to continue and for witnesses to testify about the accused who had entered Mukwevho's house on the night of the incident. Aluwani, a post-matric student, said she was relieved that the case had come to an end. “It was stressful because I had to travel from another province to come back here to attend court,” she said. “Now my mother and I just need to focus on our lives.” At the time of his arrest, Mulovhedzi (snr) was on parole after serving more than 10 years in jail for a similar crime.

Supreme Court orders new trial for man convicted of murder and rape in 2007 A man who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2007 on charges of murder and rape will get another opportunity to argue his case in court. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of Appeal set aside his conviction and ordered that the case be heard again in the High Court. Richard Negondeni was arrested more than 13 years ago, following the death of Ms Ntsombeni Makhanye. Her badly decomposed body was found on 11 July 2002 in the bushes at Ha-Dumasi near Thohoyandou. Negondeni was accused of raping his victim and then using a stone to kill her. He then allegedly robbed her of her cell phone. He also had to face another charge of rape for an incident that happened in February 1999. When the matter eventually made it to the High Court on 19 February 2007, Negondeni was not satisfied with the legal representative that the State had appointed. The presiding officer, Acting Judge Renke, asked him about his apparent uneasiness and Negondeni complained that he had not had the opportunity to consult properly with the legal representative. Following some efforts to get the defendant and his legal representative to confer, the court then decided that the matter should be postponed to the next day to give Negondeni the proper time to discuss the case. The legal representative indicated that he would not be available the next day and the court then arranged for another legal representative to take over the defence. When the trial resumed the next day, Judge Renke asked Negondeni whether he was satisfied with his new legal representative, to which he answered affirmatively. He then

proceeded to plead guilty to the four charges and, in a written statement, explained some of the circumstances. In the statement, he describes how he met the deceased at the shopping complex in Thohoyandou. She accompanied him to Ha-Dumasi, where they went into the bushes. Negondeni admits that he forced her to have sexual intercourse with him. He alleges that they quarrelled and he hit her on the head with a stone. “She fell down and never spoke again. I then got shocked, frustrated and confused,” he states. Negondeni also admitted guilt to the separate charge of rape that occurred in 1999. In this incident, he met the victim at a shopping centre in Thohoyandou and they went to Block F, not far from Thohoyandou Technical School. He forced her to have sexual intercourse with him in the bushes near the school. The incident was reported to the police the same day and he was arrested. Judge Renke posed a few questions to Negondeni to get some clarity on issues, but these were mostly as to the size of the stone used to kill the deceased. The court then proceeded to find him guilty on all four counts. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on the count of murder, ten years on each of the rape charges and two years for the theft of the cell phone. The Supreme Court of Appeal was asked to review the matter and set aside the conviction, based on the irregularities that occurred. The legal representatives for Negondeni argued that he had never had a fair trial and that he had never been informed of the implications of his guilty plea. Judge JA Willis, in concurrence with judges Leach and Mathopo, agreed and in the

ruling made public on Tuesday said that the requirements of Section 112 of the Criminal Procedure Act had not been followed. Judge Willis referred to case law and said “…the court should be satisfied not only that the accused committed the act in question, but that he committed it unlawfully and with the necessary mens rea (intention or knowledge)”. The Supreme Court judges agreed that it was not clear from the available records whether Negondeni had acted with the intent of killing the deceased. The accused had also at no stage during the trial been warned by the court that, if convicted, he faced the risk of life imprisonment. “The right of every person to a fair trial is a constitutional one. That right was infringed and for that reason the conviction and sentence cannot be allowed to stand,” reads the judgment. The Supreme Court took into account the interests of the family and friends of the victims, stating that the appellant (Negondeni) cannot be allowed to walk free without further ado. The court instead opted for a trial de novo, which means that a new trial will have to take place, with a new judge presiding. Negondani’s legal representative in the Supreme Court of Appeal was local lawyer SO Ravele. He expressed satisfaction that the conviction of his client had been set aside, but felt that no new trial should be conducted. “We are of the view that the Supreme Court of Appeal did not properly exercise its judicial discretion to remit the matter for a hearing de novo,” he said. According to Ravele, they are awaiting instructions from their client to consider taking the case to the Constitutional Court.

Graves vandalised in Tshififi graveyard

The community of Tshififi outside Thohoyandou is in shock, following the discovery of several vandalized graves at their graveyard on Saturday morning. The graves were to be used the same morning to bury two members of the community who had passed away. The Ravele family had prepared to bury Ntanganedzeni Ravele (24), who had died of an unspecified but short illness, while the Tshiwandalani family prepared to give a decent funeral their beloved granny, Vho Phophi Muvhango Mamathuba Tshiwandalani (88). Tshiwandalani was to be laid to rest next to her husband, Mukoma, who died in 1982. This had made the family very happy and they had also paved the old man's grave, together with the gogo's. Unbeknown to them, forces of darkness were waiting for the right time to strike and thwart the families’ efforts to bury their Sentenced: Lufuno Sentenced: Fhulufhelo loved ones. The discovery was Mavhunge. Mulovhedzi. made early on Saturday when the

undertaker who was to conduct the burials went to the cemetery to make the final arrangements. Ms Rendani Mukhethoni, one of granny Tshiwandalani's grandchildren, said the family was very excited that, so many years after her grandfather's death, they had found an empty space just next to his grave where they could lay their granny to rest. “We spent a lot of money preparing for the burial, and the worst news was to hear that our gogo's grave had been vandalized. We did not know what to do as mourners were already at our home. The body was already in the house, but we finally decided to let the undertaker take the body back to the mortuary while we prepared a new grave at her home,” she said. She further indicated that food had already been prepared and they had to let the people eat, even though the funeral was postponed to the following day. The granny was finally laid to rest on Sunday. Mukhethoni said the family

was happy that it was over and that they had managed to give her a befitting send off, even though they had planned to bury her next to her husband. The Ravele family hired a grader to clear the bush and dig a grave where they finally buried their daughter at a nearby village. The local traditional leader, Chief Tshikalange, expressed his shock at the incident. “There is more to the vandalism than appears at face value. The dead and their families have not done anything wrong. We know the people behind this are trying to get to me. They are fighting for power, but they are doing it the wrong way as they are making innocent people suffer.” Tshikalange said plans were afoot to open a new graveyard at the village, but said there were many empty spaces at the local graveyard that could still be utilised. The Tshiwandalani family has since laid a charge of vandalism with the Thohoyandou police.

were present. This came after thorough negotiations between Ministers Shabangu and Nyoni to co-host a joint trade fair and exhibition for women in the two countries. Highlighting the purpose of the joint trade fair during the first day of the event, Shabangu said that the joint trade fair and exhibition sought to promote investment and access to trade markets of the two countries. "It offers women in both South Africa and Zimbabwe an opportunity to learn about target export markets in both countries. Women from both countries also get an opportunity to showcase and sell products of their work to potential buyers. This includes crafts, jewellery and textiles.” Min Chikwinya told the hundreds of people who attended the event that

women played a huge role in developing the economies of both countries. “There is no doubt that men alone cannot develop our economies. As women, we play a significant role in developing our economy. We should continue to work hard as women, especially as leaders of our countries and communities, to ensure that deliberate policies and programmes to empower women are implemented.” Ministers Zulu and Nyoni highlighted that they have plans in place as governments of both coun-

tries to launch a Beit Bridge Indaba in the near future. The Beit Bridge Indaba will enable businesswomen and leaders to meet occasionally to discuss about issues of cross-border trade and market access for them in both countries.

First book for singer Muofhe Mulovhedzi If you thought musicians cannot write books you had better think again. Popular Afro-Jazz singer Muofhe Lavine Mulovhedzi, well-known as Muofhe, will be launching her first published novel, titled Waiting on Tomorrow, at Thulamela Library tomorrow (Saturday). The event will start at 11:00. Waiting on Tomorrow is a fictional English novel through which Muofhe taps into different worlds. The book aims to teach young people and adults.

She said that her novel was based on the depth and extent of forgiveness. She said she challenged the norms and ideals of society through her book. When asked what had inspired her to write the book, she said she wanted to explore the extent of forgiveness while challenging herself. Her passion for writing grew when she was in high school, where she entered many writing and poetry competitions. The Ndzhiyeni hit-maker told Limpopo Mirror that she was not leaving music for writing. “I am not going to quit music,” she added. “Music and books are the platforms I use to make a difference in people’s lives.” Her released her debut album, Mysteries of Love, earlier this year. She said she was excited when her music was recognised by receiving five nominations at the third Tshivenda Music Awards in August. The multi-talented singer and writer from Mukula village said her background would never stop her from changing her dreams into reality. She is the oldest child of Mrs Sewela Mathaba and Mr Walter Mulovhedzi and is currently studying for a degree in communications at the University of South Africa. The launch will be attended by delegates from the local writers’ forum, the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, the University of Venda’s Linguistics Department, Tshidino Ndou from Vhadino Entertainment and Dr Moss Mashamaite. Mr Thaphelo Lekala from True Greatness Seminars will be the guest speaker. There will be performances by Trio, Zwido, Malindi (poet), Muvhuso (poet) and Muofhe. Waiting on Tomorrow is published under True Greatness Seminars and Maipfi Arts. “I have aimed to have this book available even in all major bookshops across the country,” she said. “People need books written by us, and not Popular Afro-Jazz singer Muofhe Lavine only books from overseas!” For more information Mulovhedzi launches her book tomorrow. and orders, send an e-mail to maipfi@hotmail.com. Despite the chilly weather, the recent Phala Phala FM’s Royal Heritage festival was a success and the event drew a large number of music lovers to the Nandoni venue. The marketing manager of the radio station, Ms Rudzani Mulaudzi, said that the festival was aimed at celebrating Heritage Month and encouraging people to learn more about their heritage and culture. She said that the event provided the province with an opportunity to unify its citizens and their neighbouring countries and also to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and promote tourism in the province. “We are happy that we did not have any incidents during the festival, and we would like to thank all the people for their good behaviour,” she said.

King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana said that the Vhavenda nation must know its culture and respect its heritage sites. “Heritage Month has been expanded to include the diverse cultural heritage of our country,” he said. “Our area has a rich culture and our dream is to promote cultural tourism and eco-tourism, so as to facilitate social justice and economic upliftment,” he said. He said it was important to preserve African culture and traditional values in order to build a strong and disciplined nation. Mphephu said Africans must not undermine themselves because African practices were morally acceptable and educational. “We must learn to love and appreciate our history, tradition and morality because those are the basis from which a strong nation develops. Our indigenous languages

should also be preserved for the benefit of the young generation and the community at large,” said Mphephu. The Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, also attended the event. She said that the love of indigenous music was in her blood. “There is nothing more important than preserving your culture, because it is the wealth of the coming generation. Many people think that playing an indigenous musical instrument lowers one’s dignity, which is not true. I am proud of my culture,” she said. Some of the artists who performed are local group Corner Stone, Colbert Mukwevho, Khakhathi, Bra U Masekela, Splash, Malondolo, Stimela, Kanda Bongomani and Benny Mainganye.

Ms Virginia Munyai, better known as Virgi-M, is back with a second album, Ni Tshi Funa Funani. The title can be loosely translated as Love if you love. She launched her album at Phuthalushaka Primary School in July. The Tshivenda Afro-Jazz musician from Mulenzhe village outside of Thohoyandou is fast becoming a household name in the Tshivenda music industry. She said that her new hits, Ni Tshi Funa Funani and Nthembeni, were making waves on PhalaPhala FM, Univen FM and Makhado FM. Nthembeni features South African Traditional Award-winning artist Junior Sikheli of Nwali o sinyuwa fame. Virgi-M is confident her latest offering will take her music to another level. She said she was excited when her song, Ndayo, was nominated for the Tshivenda Best Song of the Year during the Tshivenda Music Awards’ 2013 edition. She admits Ndayo set a high standard that will be difficult

New reggae album is dynamite Like dynamite that comes in a small package, this reggae music legend does not have a distinctive posture, but his powerful music will hit you until you drop. This is none other than the famous school-teacher-cum-musician, Rudzani Shufflers Ragimana of Makonde village, north of Thohoyandou. The highly experienced musician, who has shared the stage and collaborated with Dan Tshanda of Splash, Colbert Mukwevho, Roxley Masevhe, Kenny Murabi, Saul Nephawe, Rofhiwa Manyaga and Jahman Chiganja, among others, has just released his fifth album, titled Tshinwe na Tshinwe. The 10-track album, which is receiving massive airplay on Phalaphala FM and local community radio stations, has everything that reggae music lovers

need. The tracks are Reggae Music Music, Vha na Tshituhu, Nkhathutshele, Tshinwe na Tshinwe, Vhana vha muthu, Lulindo, Nwananga, A zwi dzhenwi, Ndi na inwi and Ndi zwa kale. Recorded at Burning Shark Studios in Thohoyandou, the album was composed, arranged and produced by Shufflers himself. “The response I’m getting from my fans is overwhelming. The album was launched three weeks ago, but it has sold more than 8 000 copies. I’m greatly humbled by this achievement and it gives me courage to work hard in my music career,” he said. Shufflers started his musical career as a dancer at the age of 13 in 1980. “I then made myself a guitar, using an old oil tin and rubber bands,” he recalled. His breakthrough came when his late cousin, Elvis Mukwevho, bought him

his first electric guitar in 1983. “I started composing my own songs and became a singer. I then joined a local group, called Thinawanga Band, before I started my own group, called Shufflers, in 1984. All my previous albums, Vhutshilo, Dilugiseleni, Vha khou vhonwa and Tshelede, were received with exitement by my fans and they are still selling. My DVD, titled Bonyongo is still selling and is also on Youtube.” As a musician who is moving with the times in terms of technology, Shufflers launched his website (www.shufflers. co.za) last month. He is also available on Facebook, twitter, Instagram, Youtube and e-mail (ragimana.rudzani@ gmail.com). For bookings, performances and orders, Shufflers can be contacted on 073 425 4096 or 072 855 5953.

to maintain. “I am under tremendous pressure to keep up with the standard to make sure I don’t let my fans down,” she said. “With the release of Ni Tshi Funa Funani, I can see that my world is opening up in an amazing way.” The humble singer, who started her music career as a backing vocalist for Berea Madzonga, said she loved working with other artists. “I collaborated with top artists such as Tshidino Ndou of Ni songo nyadza zwine vhanwe vha tenda khazwo fame, Humbulani Ramagwedzha, Junior Sikheli, T-Man Gavini, Venda Boy and Poet Ravhalusani Ratshitanga,” Virgi-M said. Just like other musicians, Virgi-M said she is very worried about piracy. “Our musicians die poor because our music is being pirated every day and our government turns a blind eye.” Those who would like to contact her, can phone her manager at 072 136 6644.

“Notable improvement” at Tshilidzini Hospital The situation at Tshilidzini Hospital, sometimes blamed for poor service in the past, has improved considerably. Following a visit by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and members of the provincial legislature last year, the hospital showed notable improvement in terms of infrastructure, service and human capital this year. During a recent site visit at the hospital by the same bodies in what is known as NCOP Provincial Week, they found that most of what they had recommended had been dealt with and progress has been made in most of the aspects. In his presentation, Tshilidzini Hospital CEO Mr Mpho Mufamadi conceded that, despite having some challenges, they had made strides in improving the situation at the hospital. “We can confirm that the national department is busy with the revitalization of the infrastructure here and we have also been able to purchase the much-needed machinery, such as three anaesthetic machines. Our wards were upgraded, room air were conditioners installed and a standby generator was fixed.” He added that they had also installed flood lights for the purpose of visibility at the hospital, while the staff accommodation for doctors was renovated. They had also purchases new kitchen equipment, which would be soon installed for efficiency in the kitchen, he

said. Mufamadi said their laundry had also been upgraded to such an extent that they were also assisting Elim Hospital with their laundry. He said, however, that they they still faced challenges as they had to transfer psychiatric patients to Siloam Hospital, because Tshilidzini’s ward had burnt down some years ago. “We are also happy to announce that the Thulamela Municipality has come on board and they will partner us in improving the entrance by building stalls for hawkers,” he said.

The leader of the delegation, Ms Tsapane Mammpuru, said that the delegation was exited to find that most of what they had recommended the previous year had been dealt with. “We are extremely happy by the progress made since we came last year. There are still challenges here and there, and we are still going to pass them to the relevant bodies. We will also inform the MEC, so that the problems can be dealt with for the benefit of our communities,” she said.

“Stop the carnage,” pleads Thulamela mayor The mayor of the Thulamela Municipality, Cllr Grace Mahosi, has urged aggrieved communities not to resort to violent protests but to seek the best peaceful way to resolve their differences or to express their dissatisfaction. Mahosi’s appeal comes amidst the recent spiralling violence, destruction of private and public property and, in some instances, loss of life in most parts of Thulamela. Over the past few weeks, the Thulamela Municipality was overwhelmed by unrest situations and ongoing protests in areas such as Tshifudi, Makhuvha, Bunzhe, Lwamondo and Phiphidi, among others. The protests have had a devastating effect, with pupils losing their most valuable schooling time as they move towards their examinations and the economy coming to a standstill. Of the volatile situation in the area, Mahosi said the bad things happening in the area would have a far-reaching and negative effect on all residents in the municipality. “I want to express my sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives as a result of the unrest situation. I am deeply concerned about the dangerous situation where ritual

murders, killings and acts of crime are on the increase and a daily prevalence.” She made an appeal to members of the community who have information regarding crime to come forth and inform the law-enforcement agencies. “Vandalising and damaging public

service infrastructures must come to an end as it sets back the development in our municipality. Furthermore, violence and crime affect the productivity of society, thereby disturbing schooling, businesses and access to basic essential services,” she said.

Thilivhali “Big T” Muavha packs a powerful punch If dynamite comes in small packages, then the Phalaphala FM sports presenter, Thilivhali “Big T” Muavha, packs a powerful punch. He was born and bred on the river banks of Tshimbupfe and has a distinguished career in education. He went from schooling at Mufanzhoni High in Mashau to a teachers’ diploma at the then Tshisimani College, a BA at Unisa and a diploma in sports management from Univen. He also received a diploma in project management from the North West Univeristy as well as an honours degeree in strategic management and cooperate governance from Unisa. “Sports have always been part of my life. I started as a sports presenter at Univen Radio in 1999 and worked with them until 2006.” During this time, he also enjoyed a stint as a teacher and with the Departments of Public Works and Transport, before joining Phalaphala FM in 2006. Some of the accolades he received include the radio sport presenter of the year awards for boxing and the 2012 best MTN sports presenter. “I still harbour ambitions of becoming a sports face on television. On air I call myself Big T - ‘The only big

boy in town’”. His show, Sports hour, caters for all the sporting codes, “with the aim to develop, educate and entertain the listeners.” Soccer, rugby, cricket and boxing receive a lot of coverage, due to the interest from the listeners and it gives Muavha an opportunity to interact with big shots in sporting circles globally. “What I like about the show is that it is friendly and we interact with listeners”. He added that one important thing he had learnt in radio journalism “is that you must always be prepared to learn a thing or two in your interaction with the public.” Sports hour is aired from 19:00 to 20:00 from Monday to Thursday. He also featured as commentator on television for SABC2 earlier this year, commentating on the Comrades and Cape Town marathons. His message to young people is to always put education first.“Go to school, find out what you want and go after it. Never let anyone tell you that you cannot do something; believe in yourself,” he concluded. Muavha is married to Ntsumbedzeni and they have two boys.

Limpopo’s Baroka lead the NFD pack Baroka FC maintained their unbeaten record when they beat Mthatha Bucks 2-0 in their National First Division League match at the Mthatha Stadium in the Eastern Cape on Sunday afternoon. Baroka moved to the top of the log, following several impressive results. Bucks missed a fortune seven minutes into the game. They were awarded a penalty after a defender of Baroka handled the ball within his own danger area. Johannes Mavusana shocked the fans by shooting straight to the stranded keeper. Baroka’s goals came via Walter Kutumela and Lawrence Daniel Kekana. The former Absa Premiership Division side, Moroka Swallows, were the hardest hit. They were brutally walloped 0-4 by Ama-

zulu at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban on Saturday. It took Usuthu only four minutes to get the home crowd on their feet as Petrus Mthembi got his name on the scoresheet. This after he received a pre-cooked pass from David Dlamini. Linda Bengu found the net in the 35 minute, while Ayabulela Kobe found the net four minutes afterwards to bring the half-time score to 3-0. Swallows managed to create a number of chances, but their strikers let them down. The KZN side increased the margin in the 80th minute when Bornwell Nwape scored from a free kick with a half volley. Thembisani Nevhulamba, Ivan Mahangwahaya and Leonard Ntshangase scored when Black Leopards beat FC Cape Town

3-1 at the Thohoyandou Stadium. (See a full match report on the main sports page). Cape Town All Stars suffered their first defeat when they lost 0-3 to Milano United in their Cape Town derby at the Philipi Stadium. Highlandspark continued to collect league points when they crushed African Warriors 3-0 at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa. Witbank Spurs registered a narrow 1-0 victory over Santos at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. Mbombela United won their first match when they beat Royal Eagles 3-0 at the Kanyamazane Stadium. Jonathan Armogan scored the all-important goal when his side, Vasco da Gama, beat Thanda Royal Zulu 1-0 at the Parow Park Stadium.

Takers will pin their hopes on their captain, Khuliso Netshaulu, and Khumbudzo Muvhango for the distribution of dangerous

Musina staff participate in SAIMSA games Players of various sporting codes from Musina Municipality recently participated in this year’s Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA) games which were held in Lesotho. The week-long tournament attracted municipal workers from South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Lesotho. Musina Municipality participated in soccer, netball, tennis, volleyball, table tennis and pool. The soccer team won three games and lost one, but it was not good

enough for them to proceed to the semifinals. The netball team played five games, won three games and lost two, while the volleyball team played four games, managed to win two and lost two. A municipal employee, Ms Lillian Muleya, participated in the 10km fun run and finished in second position. “I strongly believe in healthy living. Excising and keeping myself fit is what got me where I am today. Achieving this milestone on foreign soil is a very good

thing," she said. Each municipality that participated in this year’s event received a trophy and Lesotho hat, engraved with the name of the municipality, as a token of appreciation. The councilor responsible for sports in Musina Municipality, Bigboy Ndou, could not hide his excitement about the high level of commitment from all the sporting codes. “To me, they are all winners because they did not put up an average performance. I’m very proud of them.”

Limpopo NFD derby: Can Black Leopards stop Baroka FC? Sparks are expected to fly when Black Leopards and Baroka battle it out for league points in their Limpopo derby at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

The game will, for a number of reasons, keep the spectators on the edge of their seats. Firstly, Baroka have a score to settle with Leopards. Lidoda Duvha beat them 2-0 at the

Leopards’ left back, Lebohang Mabotja.

same venue last season. Secondly, it is important for Leopards to show the rest of the NFD teams that they will not be a pushover this year. Baroka are currently leading the pack with 13 points from their five outings, while Leopards are three points behind. Leopards must keep a close eye on Baroka’s fast forwards, Victor Letsoalo, Lucky Mothoa and Walter Kutumela, or else they will be buried alive. The Thohoyandou outfit will

be without their marksman, Kgabo Mashiane, tomorrow. Mashiane was given his marching orders in their game against FC Cape Town at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday. The combination of Meshack Maphangule and Morgan Shivambu in the Leopards’ centre half is likely to give the opposition no time to breathe, while the defenders, Dunga Leopards’ centre back, Dunga Munganga. Leopards destroy Cape Town After losing 0-2 to Cape Town All Stars at home two weeks ago, Black Leopards made amends and defeated another Cape Town side, FC Cape Town, 3-1 at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday. Although Leopards conceded an early goal, they did not panic as they were in full control of the game. The visitors were forced to effect an early change to their starting line-up, after their midfielder, Sekela Sithole, sustained an injury in the 14th minute. He was replaced with Shimi Radebe. The Capetonians took the lead in the 18th minute. Andile Khumalo finished off a rebound after Siphelele Magubane tried

his luck from inside the box. The ball hit the woodwork and bounced back into play and Khumalo, who was waiting in a perfect scoring position, made no mistake. Leopards took the game to the opponents after introducing Meshack Maphangule and Ivan Mahangwahaya for Jabulani Ndebele and Ndamulelo Mungadi respectively. Lidoda Duvha leveled matters before the teams adjourned for half time. Thembisani Nevhulamba scored, following a square pass from Marks Munyai. The visitors were chasing the action throughout the second half. A substitute, Ivan Mahangwahaya, made his presence felt in the 68th minute. He beat the Cape

Town keeper, Glen Theletsane, with a ground cutter after a great pass from Leonard Ntshangase. Leopards played the last 20 minutes of the game with 10 men. Their playmaker, Kgabo Mashiane, was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence. Leopards continued to play attacking football despite the setback. FC Cape Town threatened to score in the 74th minute. Jarod Moroole unleashed from the 25-meter area. The ball hit the crossbar and landed outside the field of play. Leonard Ntshangase scored the third in the 84th minute after dribbling past two defenders in a row.
