My operasie is geboek vir Saterdag.

At the age of 15, Michael Deysel (29) of Louis Trichardt felt something pop in his back, followed by pain and numbness in his lower back. That was just the beginning of the harrowing journey that this brave young man has undertaken ever since. “I got back from the latest radiotherapy treatment on the weekend,” he said, seated at his desk where he works at P&L’s Warehouse as he began to share his story. He is clearly not someone to take sick days lightly. The doctor he went to 14 years ago diagnosed his pain as the result of stress. The pain persisted, however, and so he began physiotherapy. This kept him mobile, although he was still in pain. Even after many consultations with doctors, hospitals, and other health professionals, Michael’s tumour remained undiscovered and misdiagnosed. He stayed determined throughout, and in 2009 he began to play rugby. The pain then decreased substantially until 2013, when it returned suddenly and with a vengeance. This time the pain was intense and constant and culminated in his losing his mobility completely. Finally, in 2014, a doctor he went to see informed him that he was too young to be in so much pain for no readily apparent reason and referred him to a spinal specialist in Polokwane. The specialist could see nothing unusual on the X-rays of his spine and sent him for an MRI straight afterwards. When the results came through, a non-cancerous tumour was finally diagnosed. It was situated in his spine in a position too close to his nervous system to remove all of it
easily. This proximity to the spinal nervous system got Michael referred to a neurosurgeon, and four operations followed, leaving his right leg paralysed. For the rest of that year, Michael put all that he could into learning to walk again. Another MRI in 2015 revealed that the tumour had grown significantly, and emergency surgery was needed once again. When he woke up from this operation, he could once again feel his right leg, but his left foot had become completely floppy and unusable. Later the same year, a new cyst was found on his spine in addition to the tumour. Another operation on his spine got rid of the cyst, but with the tumour situated where it was, it could still not be completely removed. Michael was then given five weeks of radiation therapy, which slowed the growth of the tumour, but the nerve damage in his foot worsened. Multiple treatments and operations have all so far failed to remove the tumour, and Michael was informed in January 2018 that further surgery on his spine had become too risky. Several radiation treatments followed, as well as radiation surgery. In May this year, the MRI revealed three new tumours, one of them cancerous. Michael starts radiation again on 13 September. Throughout all these treatments, Michael has remained steadfast and continues to support himself completely. Apart from one much-appreciated donation from the Round Table, which helped him buy the brace that he is now using in his constant quest to walk again, he has only himself to rely on. His wheelchair is ancient and appears dangerous,
with the seat section barely there. The rest of it is also hanging on by a thread. Despite obviously being in desperate need of a new chair, Michael has never asked for handouts or complained about his illness. In fact, he has made a point of inspiring other people who have also been experiencing negative life events. After 14 years of constant pain and challenges that must have been terrifying for such a young man to have to endure all on his own, he now plays bowls at the Louis Trichardt clubhouse, despite being wheelchair-bound. He gets up every day and goes to work with a smile on his face. He has no idea where money will come from for his future treatments, now that his medical fund has run dry, but he has no plans of giving up. “I’ve never had the will to quit,” he says. “I draw my strength from God. He knows the plans He has for all of us, and I believe that if we continue to fight, we will get rewarded. I want to live, and so I will never give up.”
Michael Deysel feels that life is a gift and that everyone should be grateful for every minute they have.
“Ek doen baie strekoefeninge.
Ek was so. Dit is net, ons aanvaar dinge as vanselfsprekend.

“Willing seller” says government lacks political will By Jo Robinson
After being targeted for burglary five times, with the fifth incident being both violent and traumatising, the De Agrella family have had enough. They want to sell their hotel and conference centre outside of Louis Trichardt, but that might not be an easy thing to do. Vincent De Agrella was frustrated enough to participate in one of the public hearings on the land rights amendment bill held in Thohoyandou, Limpopo. The De Agrella family bought the Adam’s Apple Hotel in 1998. The property was subject to a land claim in 2005, but this only came to the family’s notice in 2015. After negotiating with the claimants, an agreement was reached whereby De Agrella would be permitted to lease the ground that the hotel is situated on as the claimants were interested in the land only and not the buildings. Part of the deal was that training would be given to local youths in the hotel industry, for which they would also receive certification and thus have a much better chance of being employed. De Agrella says that he sent many letters and communications to the government to find out how to implement the “willing buyer, willing seller” procedure, which he was ready to proceed with. Even though he was willing to accept a very
reasonable price, he says, he was completely ignored, making a farce of the systems already in place to make the redistribution of land less painful than it is. He says that part of his philosophy has always been, and still is, to help uplift the people of Limpopo and that bad governance and corruption are partly to blame for the high incidence of crime in this province. People are hungry, he says. When some people are hungry, they steal and get violent. The Department of Tourism is begging for us to grow the industry, says De Agrella, but the Land Claims Commission is stopping them from working on that growth that would benefit so many people currently unemployed. “The burglary that took place here on 9 August was incredibly traumatic for all concerned, but especially so for my parents, and living this way is no longer acceptable.” In the early hours of that day, De Agrella was held hostage for three hours while the invaders ransacked the place. They beat him with a wheel spanner, and although they shot at a hotel guest and attacked his security guard, fortunately nobody was fatally injured. The robbers instructed their victims to remain in one of the rondavels and, addressing De Agrella by his first name, threatened to come back and kill him if he tried to call for help. The victims lay there for an hour to be sure that these violent criminals had left before moving.
De Agrella says that crime is out of control in this province and that on the same day of the burglary at Adam’s Apple, another three took place in Vleifontein and three in Louis Trichardt. He cites another example where, on one occasion, local protection groups had found the spoor of 16 different groups of poachers, all active on one night. He says that he has seen this coming for a long time, and that a large part of his motivation for attending the landclaims hearings was to get his belief across that the
systems already in place are good enough to get the issue of land redistribution addressed without resorting to expropriation without compensation, and that the government is already in possession of land waiting to be distributed. He concludes that the political will to address this issue has been lacking for too long, and that the truth is that if the government did use the systems already in place, they could begin to implement land reform without so much unnecessary confusion and trauma.
Even though he was willing to accept a very reasonable price, he says, he was completely ignored

Is jy weergebore? Demographics guru says bedrooms run the world, not governments By Jo Robinson
The latest results from data-driven studies by highly respected scientists indicate very definite connections between the projected poverty or wealth and birth rates in any given population during and following periods of either plenty or penury. Recent figures in the Limpopo Socio-Economic Review and Outlook report, issued by the Limpopo Provincial Government, appear to prove this closer to home in a more personal way. People could find the size of the population, statistics, facts and projections boring and of no use whatsoever, but according to the late Hans Rosling, who is known around the world as the guru of statistics, this knowledge can not only be useful, but aid in future decisions on both personal and global scales. The theory behind how this operates comes from several studies, but Rosling explains in layman’s terms. He states in interviews shortly before his death in February last year that poverty, or the threat of possible poverty-related death, appears to predict an immediate rise in birth rates, and usually a rise in the birth of male children in particular. Middle-class status or affluence indicates both a fall in fertility and the birth of fewer male offspring than female. Parts of these studies show that sometimes, for reasons as yet unknown, birth rates will change shortly prior to the occurrence of completely unforeseeable events that could lead to poverty or increased poverty-related death. What statisticians are stating in studies of world demographics, and lately more particularly South African demographics, is that while people are unaware, on an individual basis, of when more or fewer children will be “required” to ensure the survival of any given population group, the population groups themselves are in some way extremely aware. The unexpected way that this demographic works is that while people believe that smaller families will lead to more wealth, Rosling states that more wealth leads to smaller families. He says that as long as the status quo suggests that poverty lies ahead for a certain population, that population will respond by producing enough children to ensure its survival, regardless of the anticipated losses to said poverty. The other side of that coin is that once a population begins to see a little affluence, the possibility of death because of poverty shrinks and, in conjunction with this, so does the birth rate. Rosling states that you need to begin to get healthy and wealthy before you get to see a dip in population rather than the other way around. In one particular TED talk presentation he states that what the world needs is not birth control but rather wealth creation, which leads to healthier people and a natural drop in birth rates. A very recent study by the head of the Solidariteit Research Institute, Connie Mulder, found that Afrikaans-speaking people will number more than 7 million in 2031, 270 000 more than in the 2011 census. Findings are that birth rate numbers of Afrikaans speakers of all races are going to increase sharply. As well as that discovery, the study found that not only are the emigration rates in this group smaller than thought but also that a trend exists for already-emigrated Afrikaners to return to
South Africa. It therefore appears that the Afrikaans-speaking population “sees its very existence threatened” and is thus “taking counter-measures” by making sure that enough people are born to try and ensure the continuation of this demographic group. Births, deaths and migratory habits within a population are directly affected by its wealth, health and life expectancy. As conditions improved in certain areas for the white population of South Africa through to the 20th century, family units went from having six or more children to having only two. Record keeping in the Zoutpansberg has been erratic for the past few centuries since the area was settled by whites. With the forming of the Union of South Africa, better records were kept for the Transvaal Province, of which what is now Limpopo Province formed a significant part in every respect. Even taking into account the occasional sloppy reporting with regard to race during certain periods, putting together a list of workable figures and statistics is still possible. Statistics SA, in their Poverty Trends South Africa report, states that while a decline in poverty occurred between 2006 and 2011, levels rose by 2015, with the poverty percentage rising to 55.5% from 53.2%. While that percentage does not appear
A very recent study by the head of the Solidariteit Research Institute, Connie Mulder, found that Afrikaans-speaking people will number more than 7 million in 2031, 270 000 more than in the 2011 census. too large, the actual difference is well over a million “new” people now living in poverty. Current statistics from the Limpopo Local Government show that poverty in the district is going up, and that is going to mean an increase in the population. This, combined with the apparent current lack of opportunities in this province for individual wealth creation, is likely to lead to even more people living in poverty. Rosling commented in 2015: “The biggest change of our time? Africa’s increase from 1 to 4 billion people!” Records from the whole of South Africa show that to predict the future is possible in surprising ways. A United Nations revision report in 2015 supplied statistics that showed that the whole world population had hit 7.349 billion people by the middle of 2015, which points to a world growth of around a billion in a 12-year period. Breaking things down a little more, Asia makes up 60% (with 4.393 billion) and Africa 16% (with 1.186 bil-
lion) of the world population in 2015. The report further states that: “Africa has the highest rate of population growth among major areas, growing at a pace of 2.55% annually in 2010-2015. Consequently, of the additional 2.4bn people projected to be added to the global population between 2015 and 2050, 1.3bn will be added in Africa. After 2050, Africa is expected to be the only major area still experiencing substantial population growth. As a result, Africa’s share of the global population is projected to grow to 25% in 2050 and 39% by 2100, while the share residing in Asia will fall to 54% in 2050 and 44% in 2100. Various university studies share findings highlighting the powerful effects of variables relating to women’s agency (e.g. female literacy and female labour force participation) on mortality and fertility. These things are associated with significantly lower levels of female disadvantage in child survival. In contrast, variables relating to the general level of development and modernisation have relatively weak effects on demographic outcomes. Rosling shares his theories, which are all based on real statistics, that regardless of such huge spikes in population growth in certain areas of the globe, the world as a whole has progressed towards better health and more wealth, rather than away from these things. He said: “It seems you can move much faster if you’re healthy first than if you’re wealthy first.” He goes on to show that people only seem to stop having children when there is reasonable certainty that the ones that they have already will survive. This is the reason, according to Rosling, that the world population is almost guaranteed to hit 11 billion and remain there for a time. He states that families get bigger when a likelihood of death in poverty exists. This explains why, according to him, such a massive population explosion is occurring in Africa, while the population of Asia is stabilising in line with the economic upswing there and a better health outlook. Rosling says: “Why do I as a professor from public health speaking about health and demography get invited to Goldman Sachs [and] all these big banks around the world? Because I tell them I can see on my screen when economic growth comes, before you can see it. In the past, economic growth was driving demographics, and now it’s the other way around. First, I see decent life coming and I see children born-per-woman drop. I see the two-child family, and I see the economic growth starting in Vietnam, in Thailand … not only in China. And this change is coming, so if you want to know where to invest in Africa, go and look at demographics. “Governments can’t run bedrooms. Bedrooms run the world. If you have countries where the fertility rate is coming down, just segmentise the population. Look at the most educated 20% i n Ghana, in Tanzania, in Ethiopia: you will find two to three children per woman. You will find an emerging China in Africa. Go there to invest if you want to earn money, if you want to have nice pensions when you retire, place part of your capital there because there you will see fast growth.”

Harcourts is once again victorious Advertorial
Harcourts Limitless in Louis Trichardt once again won several major awards during the group’s annual prize giving ceremony held at The Silver Casino on 21 August. Competing against more than 450 other agencies from Limpopo, Gauteng and Mpumalanga, the team still managed to collect eight certificates in three different categories, including for first quarter sales, second quarter sales and overall for business unit sales. Marita Gibson, local CEO of Harcourts Limitless, thanked the community for their continuing support and faith in her team who have worked tirelessly to earn a dominating market share in the Louis Trichardt area.
Inwoners van Louis Trichardt en omstreke onthou sekerlik wyle tannie Olive Brümmer se Clivias. after completing all the events. Triathlons vary in distance.” His love for swimming started in high school, shortly after the first Mangaung swimming pool was completed. This pool was built to teach children to be water safe. In 2009, Tlhakuli enlisted to join the South African Navy’s diving team, but the love of sports inspired him to rather become a physical-training, sports and recreation instructor. “I moved to the South African Air Force in 2012, and I have since made strides with regard to my sports career,” he said. “I participated in two military games that were held in Brazil (2011) and South Korea (2015). Here at home, I also took part in national major triathlon races.” For the first time in 2018, he took part in the prestigious South African Triathlon Championships. Even though the racing conditions were not ideal for him, he managed to finish the race, but was a little disappointed with his performance. His performance, however, was good enough to earn him an invitation to form part of the national triathlon team that will represent South Africa at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Championships. “I will be competing in the standard distance race with other athletes from around the world from 11-16 September 2018,” he said. The grand final of the ITU championships will take place in Queensland, Australia. More than 5 000 of the world’s best elite and age-group triathletes, representing 46 nations, will be participating in the final race of the 2018 season. Tlhakuli ascribed his success to consistency, dedication and hard work. “No matter the background you come from, work hard every day and you will reap the benefits later,” he said. “Age is irrelevant in triathlon, because you get to compete with your own age groups. Meanwhile, I would like to thank my work organisation, family, friends and sponsors who have all been amazing,” he said.
